A useful guide for traveling to Italy from Japan【Updates by 29th January 2021】
EU excludes Japan from the list of third countries for which member states should gradually lift restrictions on non-essential travel
This list is reviewed every two weeks, and this time the restrictions have been tightened again in response to the spread of the new coronavirus infection in Japan. However, this announcement is only at EU level. Although the Italian government has not yet (by January 29 th ) announced any new restrictions regarding the travels from Japan so far, it should be taken into account that Italy may follow this policy in the following days.
Check here for the official EU announcement (external link)
【Updates by 20th January 2021】
In this guide, you will find important tips and useful links that will help in case of travels from Japan to Italy.
Taking into consideration the Italian internal situation regarding Covid19 measures, it is very difficult to prepare a step-by-step explanation as national regulations are continuously changing and each region is also applying its own rules.
Furthermore, at this moment, even though you enter in Italy, it is important to remember that we are under semi-lockdown situation and each of the Italian regions are divided under colours (red, orange, yellow) and each color has a specific rules and limitations, and such distinction by colours can be changed day by day.
Current situation of travels from Japan to Italy (by January 20 th 2021)
Rules under National Level
- Travels from Japan is allowed for any reasons.
- Italian authorities are not requesting PCR tests for entering to Italy.
- Everyone arriving from Japan must be under self-isolation for 14 days from the day of arrival.
Rules under regional Level
Please note that in many cases, different regions apply different rules and requirements. Therefore, when you travel to Italy, it is highly important to check also what rules are applying the authorities of your final destination (Region, City). They might require, for example: some self declarations, PCR tests, etc.
Attention! If you are traveling from Japan but in case you have been staying recently in some other country (countries) other than Japan, different/additional rules may apply. For example, authorities may request you to submit a self-declaration and prove that you have undergone a PCR test, with negative result, in the 48 hours before your arrival; to inform your Local Health Authority of reference as soon as you arrive to your final destination, etc.

10 Travel ‘Dupe’ Destinations That Will Save You Money on Your Next Trip
Posted: December 12, 2023 | Last updated: December 12, 2023
Amid high inflation, the trend of searching for "dupes" -- duplicates of higher-end items -- has risen in popularity. This extends to everything from beauty products to designer goods to even vacation destinations . "Dupe" destinations can save travelers big money versus vacationing in a hotspot.

"In 2024, Americans are more likely to choose hidden-gem destinations over tried-and-true tourist hotspots for their vacations," Jon Gieselman, president of Expedia Brands, told CNBC .
If you're planning ahead for travel in the new year, consider one of these travel "dupe" destinations to save serious cash .
Instead of Bali, Indonesia, Visit Lombok, Indonesia
Travelers looking for beautiful beaches and stunning natural surroundings have flocked to Bali -- but this destination can get very expensive.
"Most people travel to Bali when visiting Indonesia [at] an average of $1,000 for a week's trip," said Alexandra Dubakova, travel expert and head of marketing at FreeTour.com . "Lombok is a great alternative that offers the same vibrant culture, attractive beaches and hiking trails, and [it] costs around $600 for a week's visit."

Instead of New York, Visit Montreal
Those looking for a city destination should skip NYC and head farther north.
"Visiting New York City comes with a hefty price -- $2,500 for a week's trip," Dubakova said. "Montreal offers a rich history, a great food scene and vibrant city life for almost half the price -- $1,500."

Instead of Paris, Visit Lisbon, Portugal
When you think of romantic European destinations, Paris is likely top of mind -- but it's far from the only option.
"Paris, the City of Love, is a great choice but [it's] expensive," Dubakova said. "It costs around $2,000 to visit Pairs for a week, [while] Lisbon costs $1,200 and offers the same romantic aura and architectural beauty."
Instead of Bora Bora, French Polynesia, Visit Zanzibar, Tanzania
Planning a honeymoon for 2024? Consider Zanzibar for an affordable destination.
"Bora Bora is renowned for its luxurious overwater bungalows and stunning blue waters," said Jim Campbell, CEO of Honeymoons.com . "Zanzibar offers a similar paradise with beautiful beaches, rich cultural history and exotic wildlife. The cost of a trip to Zanzibar can be up to 50% less than a trip to Bora Bora, making it an excellent choice for a romantic and adventurous honeymoon."
Instead of Venice, Italy, Visit Ljubljana, Slovenia
Avoid the crowds -- and the hefty price tags -- by opting for Ljubljana over Venice.
"Venice is famous for its canals, historic architecture and romantic ambiance. Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, offers a similar charm with its picturesque waterways, vibrant cultural scene and less crowded streets," Campbell said. "Traveling to Ljubljana instead of Venice can save you about 30-40% on accommodation and dining."
Instead of The Maldives, Visit Palawan, Philippines
If an island getaway is calling your name, consider booking a trip to Palawan.
"The Maldives is known for its stunning islands and luxury resorts. Palawan provides a similar tropical paradise with breathtaking lagoons, rich marine life and more affordable accommodation options," Campbell said. "Choosing Palawan over the Maldives can result in savings of about 40-50%."

Instead of Santorini, Greece, Visit Puglia, Italy
Puglia is one Italian destination that isn't yet overrun by tourists, so you can still book an affordable trip here. Conversely, Santorini has become increasingly pricey.
"Santorini is famous for its iconic white buildings and beautiful sunsets. Puglia offers a comparable Mediterranean charm with its beautiful coastlines, historic villages and delicious cuisine," Campbell said. "A [vacation] in Puglia can be up to 35% cheaper than one in Santorini."
Instead of Dubrovnik, Croatia, Visit Cavtat, Croatia
If Croatia is on your travel list, consider booking a trip to Cavtat over the more popular Dubrovnik.
"Though not as publicized as Dubrovnik, Cavtat is an excellent alternative to this now overpriced Croatian destination," said Danielle Rudic, director of marketing at Travelive , a luxury destination management company. "You can find both four- and five-star properties, great traditional taverns [and a] more traditional feel, and you will not have to elbow through rivers of tourists holding a selfie-stick as you would in Dubrovnik."
Hotels in Cavtat are $150 to $300 cheaper per night, and Dubrovnik is just a 20-minute drive away. "This price difference is also noticeable in restaurants and bars," Rudic said. "On average, you can expect to pay 30% less."
Instead of Kyoto, Japan, Visit Hoi An, Vietnam
Kyoto is a popular Asian destination, but you'll find much better prices elsewhere.
"Kyoto is famous for its historic temples, gardens and traditional teahouses. However, a trip here can be quite costly, with hotels averaging $120 per night and meals around $30 per person," said Augustinas Milaknis, head of PR at Ratepunk , a travel booking app.
"Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Vietnam, is a delightful alternative with its well-preserved Ancient Town, lantern-lit streets and rich history," he said. "Accommodations in Hoi An can be as low as $50 per night, and a delicious meal can cost around $15 per person."
Instead of Napa, California, Visit Sonoma, California
Even though these two wine country destinations are located close by, the prices can be worlds apart.
"They're comparable due to them literally being right next door to each other and offering many of the same amenities," said Jared Benoff, founder of Vacationeeze , a family-owned travel agency.
"You have to look a little closer to see some key differences between the two charming regions," he said. "For example, the Bardessono in Yountville, Napa will be approximately $1,500 per night while the Madrona, recently named one of the best in the world by Travel + Leisure, will be about $690 per night. People visiting Sonoma will also find generally more affordable wine-tasting fees and dining options."

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse
By Jonathan Corum
On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.
By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.
Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.
Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?
The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.
Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sun’s magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?
As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.
Watching the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.
Andrea Morales for The New York Times
To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.
What If I Miss It?
The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.
A Total Solar Eclipse Is Coming. Here’s What You Need to Know.
These are answers to common questions about the April 8 eclipse, and we’re offering you a place to pose more of them.
By Katrina Miller
What’s the Cloud Outlook for Eclipse Day? See if History Is on Your Side.
April 8 could be your best opportunity to see a total solar eclipse for decades. But if clouds fill the sky, your shot at seeing the spectacle could be lost.

Visit Japan Web: The Online Registration Before Arriving in Japan
Japanese customs: mysos replaced from november, 14, 2022.
During the Covid pandemic, entry procedures in Japan have changed a lot, which created some confusion. It is still somewhat the case after the reopening to tourism since October 11, even if a focus has been placed on easing the procedures especially through digitalization , to minimize human interactions and subsequent contamination risks.
Until recently, the Japanese government asked visitors to install specific app on their smartphones:
- MySOS, for advance registration of information regarding vaccine status / PCR test, for faster airport procedures in Japan (the "fast track" system)
- COCOA, an app to track contact-cases and infected persons, but it was discontinued in September 2022.
MySOS was not mandatory but highly recommended . Travelers who could not use the app were directed upon their arrival in Japan to a specific line in order to complete the necessary steps (showing a valid vaccination certificate / PCR test, etc.) which lengthened their time at the airport.
New website available since November 1st, 2022
In mid-October 2022, a new change in the procedure has been announced for all entry in Japan from November 14 included : every traveler (tourist, foreign resident and Japanese citizen alike) can register in advance on the Visit Japan Web site.
Visit Japan Web is a free, single portal to group formalities related to:
- Covid-19 🦠 ( quarantine , vaccination certificate, PCR test); The Pre-registration for Quarantine Procedures section collects the information that were previously filled in the MySOS app ("Fast Track" function);
- Immigration : the Disembarkation Card for Foreigner that was formerly handed in the plane ✈️ just before landing (does not concern Japanese citizens and foreign permanent residents);
- Customs 🛂 , with the Declaration of Personal effects and Unaccompanied Articles , to fill upon arrival, formerly either on a paper form or on the Japanese government’s Zeikan shinkoku app (税関申告アプリ).
In the facts, registering on the website has been possible since November 1, 2022 , for any arrival in Japan from November 14 in one of its largest airports:
- Tokyo -Narita,
- Tokyo-Haneda,
- Osaka - Kansai (KIX),
- Chubu ( Nagoya ),
- Fukuoka ( Kyushu ),
- New Chitose ( Hokkaido ) and
- Naha ( Okinawa ).
Travelers arriving in Japan before November 14, 2022, can still use the MySoS app to fill their Covid related data and are not the target of the Visit Japan Web.
1 blue screen and 2 QR Codes to show on a smartphone
Like with MySOS previously, each step of the registration process is ended by a change in the page display that includes:
- A blue screen , for a successful quarantine procedure registration,
- and the creation of 2 QR Codes for customs and immigration procedures.
Once all the steps are completed, a visitor’s smartphone 📱 will display first a blue screen, then 2 QR Codes to show at each checkpoint.
Starting April 29, 2023 , according to March 10 and April 26 latest announcements of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, some of the borders restrictions will be lifted and the Covid-19 quarantine procedure (blue screen) will not be required anymore .
It is highly recommended to register before departing for Japan : at the latest 6h prior to the flight’s departure, and ideally within the 10 preceding days , in order to allow time for the review of the submitted documents. Reviews are sorted by date of arrival in Japan . Visit Japan Web is available in English.
Whether you are fully vaccinated or not, consider using Visit Japan Web to make sure to board your flight to Japan, as airlines reserve the right to refuse passengers who may potentially be banned at the Quarantine Procedures step.
The necessary documents are:
- A valid email address (will be used as a user ID to each access to Visit Japan Web);
- Until April 29, 2023 , Covid vaccination certificate or negative PCR test result taken less than 72 hours before departure and translated in English (use the Japanese-English form provided by the Japanese Ministry of Health here );
- An address in Japan (for example, of the first accommodation you will be staying at).
If traveling with underage children , it is possible to register them on the same Visit Japan Web account (up to 10 travelers). Dependent or handicapped adults who cannot go through the procedures alone can also be registered in the Family members traveling with you section. However, each of them has to have their own passport or equivalent immigration document.
Each member of the family registered on the same account will also have their blue screen and 2 QR Codes, to show at checkpoints at the arrival airport in Japan.
Like with MySOS, registering with Visit Japan Web is not mandatory , however it helps going through the entry procedures in Japan faster, and reduces the hurdles of tedious formalities after 12 hours of more spent in a plane.
On April 5, 2023, Kono Taro, the Japanese Minister of Digital Affairs, announced that travelers are no longer required to show any document at arrival airport’s quarantine in Japan . However, filling information forms for immigration and customs is still a requirement.
Additional tips and advice
An Internet 📶 connection is required to use the Visit Japan Web site, especially to create the account, fill in the user’s information, and their family’s when applicable (name, passport number, etc.), the forms regarding vaccination or PCR test and create the first QR Code. The digital Disembarkation Card for Foreigners and custom procedures can be completed offline and the QR codes created upon arrival at the airport.
Creating a Visit Japan Web account is possible on a computer (Chrome browser is recommended) or on a smartphone (Chrome browser recommended on Android). In any case, before departure, make sure to be logged in only on the device you will use to travel (a smartphone ideally), and check that all information is up-to-date.
Questions asked at immigration and customs procedures are the same than on the paper forms. In any event, official Japanese sources (the Embassy of Japan or the Border Control page of the Japanese Ministry of Health for example) are the ultimate references regarding entry procedures in Japan and should be checked frequently.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge? What to know about collapsed Baltimore bridge
The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , a major transportation link in the Baltimore area, sparked a massive search and rescue effort early Tuesday morning.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge located?
The bridge crosses over the Patapsco River on I-695 and is the final link on the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .
It is the outermost of the three tollways that cross Baltimore's Harbor.
How long is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?
The 4-lane bridge structure alone is 1.6 miles long. The facility also includes the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. Including approach roadways, the entire stretch is around 10.9 miles long, MDTA said.
Why did a ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge?
The ship, a container vessel chartered by Maersk, apparently lost power a few minutes before striking the bridge, a senior U.S. official told USA TODAY .
No Maersk crew or personnel were onboard the vessel when it struck the bridge, according to a statement from the company. It was operated by a charter company, Synergy Group, and owned by Grace Ocean Pte., based in Singapore, and ultimately bound for Sri Lanka.
Accidents like this, called Marine casualties, are not uncommon, the official told USA TODAY, with an allision (an immobile object being struck by a ship) occurring about every 10 years or so. Investigators will likely look into the cause of the power outage and whether there was a mechanical failure on the ship.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority .
What type of bridge is the Francis Scott Key?
The steel-arched bridge was the second-longest continuous-truss bridge span in the world when it was built and remains the second longest in the United States and third in the world, according to the American Civil Engineering Society .
When was the Francis Scott Key Bridge built?
Construction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge began in 1972.
Francis Scott Key Bridge has a deep history
According to the MDTA, the bridge crosses over the Patapsco River, near where Francis Scott Key, the bridge's namesake, was inspired to write the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner.
Key is believed to have witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on the night of Sept. 12, 1814, within 100 yards of the modern-day bridge. That battle is what inspired him to the national anthem.
How vital is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?
The bridge is critical to East Coast shipping. The port’s private and public terminals handled 847,158 autos and light trucks in 2023, the most of any U.S. port. The port also handles farm and construction machinery, sugar, gypsum and coal, according to a Maryland government website.
