Where to see Santa North West

If you wondering where to see Santa North West England in 2023 then you’ve come to the right place. There are so many great family Christmas days out in the North West to choose from but if you specifically want to see father Christmas then this is the post for you.

Table of Contents

I’ve done my best to add the details of all these events accurately and keep them up to date but I strongly advise you to click through and check on the organiser’s website to ensure the dates and times have not changed. Most (if not all) of these events require pre-booking so I’d recommend you do that as soon as you decide you want to in order to avoid disappointment. Many events sell out completely, long before December.

If you have an event you want to be added, drop me an email at – [email protected]

Do you know of any way for low income families to recieve help from Christmas charities or an angel tree program in the Sumner area? For a single mother of a special needs child who has zero income and can provide proof.

Hi J –

I am not familiar with any on a first hand basis (but I will ask some folks who might be, and get back to you if I find more). I do know that many programs are run through DSHS, and I did find some info for Christmas help if your in Pierce County here that you might want to call and see if you can find out more – https://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html/pierce_county_free_christmas_ass.html (sounds like applications might be done at your childs school in your area, and I know we do giving trees at my kids schools, so I might also check in with the front office at your childs school for more info).

Here is another list of more agencies in your area that may be able to help out https://lowincomerelief.com/free-christmas-toys-pierce-county-wa/

and https://www.toyrescuemission.org/

Another place you might ask for resources is your local food bank, or fire department. They may be able to guide you to distribution centers if they do not do it themselves.

Will be praying for your family this year.

Yes! Calvary community church, has an angel tree program. If the child is in school, the counselor can but the information in. If not contact them directly!

Santa Train 2023 is now a memory, but what memories!

Santa's parlor inside the chapel car.

Santa Claus has a parlor in the 1898-built chapel car Messenger of Peace, located inside the Train Shed exhibit hall.

The Northwest Railway Museum has hosted Santa Train since 1969, and today it is actually two separate and distinct experiences.

Seasonal decorations adjacent to the Northern Pacific boxcar.

Artifacts in the Train Shed receive seasonal enhancements to add to the festive atmosphere.

Santa Express is 45 minutes long and operates between Snoqualmie and Snoqualmie Falls with an on-board Santa experience.

Santa Limited is a two-hour experience and operates between North Bend and the Railway History Center in Snoqualmie.  Guests experience a visit with Santa inside the 19th Century chapel car located in the Train Shed, and receive complementary refreshments including coffee, hot cocoa, and cookies.

Wooden railway chapel cars

The 2023 children’s gift was a version of the Museum’s railway chapel car.

Children riding Santa Trains receive a complimentary gift from Santa.  For more than 20 years, the Museum has taken pride in developing a unique gift, and in 2023 it was a wooden railway version of the Museum’s iconic chapel car Messenger of Peace.  Prior years have featured replicas of traditional wooden toys, whistles, and even a railway tooth brush.

The Santa Limited is the most enriching experience of the two trains and includes one hour inside the Train Shed exhibit hall.  Many familiar artifacts appear with festive enhancements, and there are added activities for younger visitors.  Refreshments are served in the adjacent Railway Education Center.

Steam locomotive 924

Locomotive 924 is dressed for the Santa Train season.

Santa Train is the Northwest Railway Museum’s most popular program and this year it substantially sold out in late October.  Santa Train 2024 will be on sale in August 2024.

For a jolly-sized guy whose age is north of retirement, Santa Claus sure gets around. In Seattle alone, you might see him scuba diving, hanging out on top of the Space Needle, taking pictures with pooches or catching the sights at a lighthouse. He might hang out for a few hours or a few weeks – you just never know. Fortunately, we've got the scoop on where you can find him around town this year.

Shopping at the Market

Dec. 9, 2023

While he won’t be catching at any fish (although that would really be fun to see), Santa is allowing the paparazzi to take photos with him at Pike Place Market on Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. And nope, he won't be charging a dime, either. He's even giving out gifts. Well, sort of. Shoppers who spend $50 or more at any Market business can receive two free rolls of Pike Place Market wrapping paper.

Looking out at the Lighthouse

Santa will “light up” your holiday with a visit at Fort Casey at the Admiralty Head Lighthouse one day only during the Light Up Your Holiday event, which comes complete with Christmas carolers, children’s activities and roasted marshmallows. The fun goes from 4-7 p.m. A Discover Pass or $10 day parking fee is required for parking.

Working on the Farm

Now through Dec. 17, 2023

Located in Mount Vernon, Skagit Acres is 25-acre farm serving as one-stop shop for plants, gifts, décor and delicious treats. Each weekend from now until Dec. 17, Santa will be entertaining guests from Noon to 5 p.m. on Fridays and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays (reservations are required for the latter two). Your ticket includes up to four photos with Santa to be delivered by email or text – so instant gratification!

Working at the Filling Station

Dec. 15, 17, 20, 22 and 23, 2023

In North Seattle, Kringle’s magical filling station is a great place for families. Challenge your friends and family to Christmas Ski-Ball, Reindeer Games and Holiday Karaoke and pose beside Santa’s souped-up sleigh. Don’t forget to get your cup of steaming hot cocoa. It comes straight from the gas pump! The Kringles are personal friends with Santa and will be hosting the jolly old elf to the station on selected dates. His visiting hours vary, so be sure to visit Kringle’s website for correct times.

Chilling Out in Stanwood

Now through Dec. 23, 2023

Not only is The Lights of Christmas a fantastic drive-through adventure through larger-than-life Christmas light creations, it’s also a great place to chat with St. Nicolas and the Mrs. at Santa’s Village. Here, you can catch up with the Claus’, meet Frosty and Rudolph, hear a few jokes from Bruce the Spruce, visit the gift shop and munch on a few snacks too. Santa will be on hand for visiting with his friends every night until Dec. 23rd. Visit the Lights of Christmas website for dates and times.

Landing at the Space Needle

Dec. 2-3, 9-10, 16-17 and 23-24, 2023

Just like how the Space Needle is now covered in see-through glass, Santa’s all-glass sleigh fits right in. Accompanied by professional photographers and an elf or two, Santa will be stationed on the Needle’s Loupe, the world's only revolving glass floor. All guests will receive a free digital photo with the guy with each visit. Santa will be here from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. each weekend (with two breaks from 12:00-12:30 and 2:00-2:45).

Scuba Diving

Now through Dec. 24

The holly jolly diver (their words, not ours) will be diving in the Seattle Aquarium’s 120,000-gallon tank. It’s quite the sight to see. And yes, he’ll take selfies with you – but you don’t have to get in the water. American Sign Language interpretation will be available during the dive on December 16, 2024.

Visiting Downtown Seattle

Now through Dec. 24, 2023

Santa returns to Downtown Nordstrom’s this year. Share your wish list and get a photo taken with the jolly fellow now through Christmas Eve. He’ll be there every day, but times vary, so be sure to check his schedule.

Visit Santa’s official “North Pole” residence

Located in the Arctic Circle, the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi is known as “Santa’s official North Pole residence” and is one of the most popular travel destinations in Finland. The village is open year-round for kids of all ages to see Santa and his elves.

Visitors can also send postcards — with Santa’s special postmark — from the Santa Claus Post Office, shop for souvenirs at the various handcraft shops or learn about Finnish Christmas traditions at the Christmas exhibition.

You could even have your photo taken with Father Christmas himself!

If you're thinking of spending Christmas at the North Pole, you should write a letter to the elves at Nordic Visitor (and yes, they also accept emails).

A Guide to Santa Fe’s Summer Events

Image may contain Person Teen Architecture Building House Housing Villa Walking Clothing Hat Backpack and Bag

For centuries, Santa Fe has held its own as a maverick of a city—an artist enclave, a spiritual haven, a mystical land beckoning travelers from around the globe. This didn’t happen by chance. To understand Santa Fe’s appeal, one must simply take a look back in time.

The oldest capital city in the US, Santa Fe was established in 1610 serving as the capital of the Spanish “Kingdom of New Mexico.'' Long before that, the city was home to New Mexico’s 23 Native American tribes, nations, and pueblos, each its own sovereign nation. All this historical context explains why Santa Fe is an inherently fascinating place; it was built on a melding of traditions that layered upon each other to create something entirely new. Every dish you taste, gallery you visit, and landscape you witness is an embodiment of the city’s singular culture, one that must be experienced to be fully understood.

The best way to take it all in is with a visit to Santa Fe in the summer months. A slew of exciting events take to the streets every year from May to August, offering visitors the chance to interact with locals and understand how The City Different earned its name. Here’s everything you won’t want to miss this summer in Santa Fe.

SWAIA Native Fashion Week - May 2-5, 2024 The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) Native Fashion Week is right at home in Santa Fe’s vibrant community, celebrating the intersection of traditional Native American artistry with contemporary fashion design. Kicking off with an opening cocktail party at the Governor’s mansion, this four-day event includes runway shows, panels, pop-ups highlighting the creativity and diversity of Indigenous designers.

Santa Fe International Literary Festival - May 17-19, 2024

It’s no surprise a notable international literary festival chose Santa Fe as its home base, for the city’s vast history is rooted in the oral and written art of storytelling. Bringing together an inspired group of prize-winning authors, the Santa Fe International Literary Festival includes mainstage lectures, walk-and-talk opportunities with authors and attendees, and inspired one-on-one author conversations, all crafted to explore the art of writing during a time period of extraordinary change.

Santa Fe School of Cooking Santa Fe’s deep-seated food culture reflects a crucial facet of the city’s soul, telling the stories of the various groups of people who have called it home over the past centuries. Explore these rich traditions with the help of a contemporary chef at a hands-on cooking class centered around the vast landscape of Southwestern fare. Whether it be a red chile workshop, a tamale-making class, or a Native American cooking demonstration, you’ll come away with a new appreciation for Santa Fe’s cuisine.

CURRENTS New Media Festival - June 14-23, 2024 Emerging technology has transformed the landscape of every facet of modern life, including art, and CURRENTS is a testament to this convergence. The annual art and technology festival creates a space for emerging and established new media artists to showcase their work in dynamic formats like VR, mixed-reality environments, and AI-artist collaboration. Santa Fe Opera - June 28-August 24, 2024 There’s opera, and then there’s the Santa Fe Opera. Visitors flock from around the globe to catch a show in this majestic setting; an open-air adobe structure with views of the mountains to the east and colorful New Mexican sunsets to the west. Living up to its moniker The City Different, Santa Fe’s opera entails an elegant sort of tailgating beforehand—white tablecloths, sophisticated picnics, and wine are the norm.

Santa Fe Margarita Trail Santa Fe was the first city in the New World to import tequila from Mexico, so it makes sense that the margarita is a staple cocktail. To explore the city’s vibrant bar scene, secure a Margarita Trail passport or download the app and make your way around the city to taste 50 different signature margaritas—not all in one day, of course. Get your Margarita Trail passport stamped at each bar and unlock prizes as you go.

20 th Anniversary International Folk Art Market - J uly 11-14, 2024

Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious folk art festivals in the world, the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe brings artists and artisans from dozens of countries to showcase their traditional crafts—textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and other handmade items are featured. This year’s event marks the 20th anniversary of the market, a true testament to the staying power of the folk art form.

Traditional Spanish Market - July 27-28, 2024 Located on the historic Santa Fe Plaza, the Traditional Spanish Market is the oldest and largest juried art show of its kind in the nation. Celebrating the rich heritage of the region’s Hispanic and Spanish-speaking communities, the Spanish Market entails an exciting slate of events, from the competition to live flamenco performances to regional Hispanic bands on the bandstand.

Stroll Down Canyon Road Aside from its photogenic charm—a half-mile, tree-lined pedestrian stretch—Canyon Road has the highest density of galleries in the country. Once all private homes, the charming adobe structures on Canyon Road now feature works of art from all over the world. Expect everything from contemporary to traditional, Western to Native American.

Santa Fe Indian Market - August 17-18, 2024 If you haven’t already noticed, summer is art fair season in Santa Fe, and the Indian Market is one of the crown jewels of the season. Hundreds of Native American tribes gather over this weekend fair, transforming Santa Fe’s historic plaza into a kaleidoscope of Indigenous artistry. Intricate works range from jewelry to sculpture to pueblo wooden carvings to beadwork and much more. Exploring the market is not only a premier art experience, but an opportunity to hear firsthand the stories of strength and resilience expressed through these incredible works.

100 th Anniversary Burning of Zozobra - August 30, 2024 Summer comes to a close in Santa Fe with the highly anticipated Burning of Zozobra. The towering effigy, created by a local Santa Fe artist, is a grimacing figure cloaked in black robes, gloomy and dark. As the sun sets, the fire spirit is unleashed on Zozobra. Excitement mounts as he burns, symbolizing the destruction of fear and anxiety.

Santa Fe Farmers’ Market A visit to one of the oldest and largest growers markets in the country is a requisite while visiting Santa Fe. More than 150 farmers bring delicious, fresh produce, prepared food, and wares to sell at the thriving market held twice weekly, every Tuesday and Saturday during the summer. The market promotes sustainable agriculture in New Mexico and provides healthy food for visitors and locals alike. Everything sold at the market is grown locally in New Mexico and is sold directly by the growers and producers themselves.

Santa Fe isn’t like any other place you’ve been, and a summertime visit will leave you rejuvenated, inspired, and ready to return. To learn more and start planning your trip today, visitsantafe.com .

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

This composite image of thirteen photographs shows the progression of a total solar eclipse

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
