adventure travel film festival

The ATFF has now closed

We hosted our final festivals in 2023 after more than a decade of events, on the grapevine….

Excellent and inspiring weekend.

It’s a highlight of our year now. Watching the films has given me a new lease of life.

It's the only UK event this year I came back for and was completely worth the trip.

Adventure travel on film – the dangers and delights

You might think that the revolution in technology that has brought film-making within the reach of everyone should mean travel film-making is in its heyday. But there is one tremendous stumbling block: an experience filmed may not be one fully experienced. Worse still, a real full throttle adventure would not be that, arguably, if the participant was able to handle a camera. Anyone who has tried to film while travelling knows the problem. At best it is that great moment when you simply cannot disappear behind a lens. At worst it is when an entire sequence of events has to be reproduced – the actuality having been completely missed.

That dilemna has been there in adventure filming ever since the genre kicked off. Fortunately there are those adventurers who will just not give up. Determined to bring home the thrills and spills, they set out to prove that film and adventure can co-exist, even thrive in each other's company. And they have been doing so ever since film started. Take Grass (1925), one of the films to be shown at the Adventure Travel Film Festival (17-20 August) in Sherborne, Dorset. The brain-child of Merian Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack who went on to co-direct the original King Kong movie in 1933, Grass is the story of two travellers who accompany the Bakhtiari tribe on an epic nomadic journey across Iran.

Despite being occasionally stagey and contrived, Grass is a stirring evocation of a way-of-life that, unbeknown to its participants and the film crew, was soon about to embark on a long and melancholy decline. Watching it a few years ago, after a trip to Iran where I'd come across a few nomadic shepherds mourning their lost culture, I appreciated how those limitations of film can fall away and be forgiven in the greater picture of historical importance.

Grass was part of a fashion for grand documentaries in the early 1920s that showed native peoples struggling for survival. Like Nanook of the North, its immensely popular forerunner, it triggered a deep desire for travel and adventure in a whole new generation. By the 1930s, however, you had a quite different, more modern, type of film emerging. Another festival entry is Twice Upon a Caravan (1933) a record of one man's epic motorbike ride around the world. I haven't seen this film, but certainly hope to. How did Robert Fulton pull off what would be an astonishing feat even today? The problems he faced are those of the self-shooter today: whether to be in the experience, or recording.

Those that travel with companions get some help on the film-making front. Ethel and Mel Ross a Canadian couple were early converts to filming their extreme "holidays", so much so that their films have become cult classics. Their Pan-American Highway (1960) is the offering here.

Not that this is a historical festival, most entries are fairly recent, with lots to look forward to. As someone who was bowled over by the Siberian episode of Ewan Mcgregor and Charley Boorman's Long Way Round, I'm very much looking forward to Maciek Swinarski's Motosyberia 2.0 Regeneration. Swinarski has become something of a cult film-maker for astounding motorcycle journeys and followed Mcregor and Boorman down the infamous Road of Bones in Russia's Wild East. This new offering sees him set out on something even more extreme in that same region.

Outside the screenings, try and catch talks from Andy Torbert, Tristram Gooley and Alastair Humphreys plus all sorts of bushcraft and campfire stuff. It promises to be an excellent weekend.

The Top 10 Adventure Film Festivals

Summer may be over, but this is still one of my favourite times of year. It’s Adventure Film Festival season! Across the world there is a growing number of festivals showcasing the best in travel, expedition and mountain adventures. You should be able to find one pretty close to where you live. In addition, some of the festivals go on tour, taking a selection of their best films to different cities around the world.

I can really recommend seeking out one of these festivals, especially if you are relatively new to the adventure world. It’s so exciting to watch a carefully-curated series of films on a massive cinema screen. There’s usually a variety of films, designed to inspire you to head out and seek adventures of your own. Long films are book-ended by short little teasers, crazy adrenaline bursts of extreme sports contrast with slower, thoughtful films. And the best in the business – proper professional film-makers with vast skill, kit and cash – go up against amateur adventurers in the hotly-contested award categories.

The films are exciting, yes. But Adventure Film festivals are more than just a night out at the cinema. For you find yourself sharing the venue with hundreds of people just like you! People excited by adventure, remembering happy memories, planning future exploits. There’s so much energy and inspiration that you can’t help but come home fired with resolve to stop procrastinating and start planning.

Walking from Calgary to Banff

I love Adventure Film festivals from another angle, too. I’mm an adventure film-maker these days, and having one of my films selected for a film festival is always massively exciting. In terms of personal ambition, and trying to get better at what I do, I see being picked for a film festival as a huge pat on the back for me. The thrill and the pride comes because I know there is so much incredible competition out there. This genre of film-making is blossoming at an amazing rate.

I also know, from seeing behind the scenes, how much work is required to run an Adventure Film festival. It’s mostly done by dedicated, knowledgable, savvy volunteers who put in huge amounts of time and energy to make the festivals so good. I respect the people who make the selections for the festivals, and that makes me feel even better when (if) they deem my film good enough for their event.

Walking from Calgary to Banff

So when you go along to a festival, know that people have really worked very hard to put together a fantastic collection of films for you to enjoy. Know that the film-makers whose films are being shown are bursting with pride to be up there on that massive screen. And know that the person sitting next to you in the auditorium is – right now – planning something ridiculous and bold and exciting, just like you will be doing.

Last year Leon and I had our film  Into The Empty Quarter   picked for a few festivals. It was ridiculously exciting. So we decided to add an extra layer of excitement of seeing our film on a big screen by walking from the airport to the film festival. We made this short film which we hope will fill you with enthusiasm for seeking out an adventure and a film festival for yourself.

Enjoy the season – go support your local Adventure Film festival. Our Top 10 List follows…

There are no end of great Adventure Film Festivals both in the UK and further afield. To try and make any sort of a qualitative list is silly. I would like to share with you my favourites , though ‘“ based simply on experiences as an audience member or when I’mve been fortunate enough to have my film screened there (and, in a couple on instances, festivals that I haven’t been to but have heard so much praise for that it’s impossible to leave them out.)

Have you been to any of these? Where have I missed out? Tell me your favourite in the comments section, or on social media.

Walking from Calgary to Banff

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (UK)

One of the first festivals I went to, and one of the best. A great weekend of speakers and event in a city filled with outdoor enthusiasts.

Why Not? Adventure Film Festival (Ireland)

There are a few good festivals in Ireland, but this is my favourite. It’s run by good people, and attended by the same. Galway is a great location too.

Edinburgh Adventure Film Festival (UK)

I limited myself to one Scottish event on this list, and it’s got to be Edinburgh. The organisers put a lot of effort in to getting great speakers to augment the films.

ReelRock (Worldwide)

The first touring festival that I came across, and still one of the best.

Adventure Travel Film Festival (UK, USA)

This is generally the most madcap festival of my year. Run by the brilliantly eccentric Austin Vince and his talented wife Lois Pryce, it unearths films that you’d never find anywhere else.

Telluride Mountain Film (USA)

Set in Colorado, this is regularly touted as the best American festival around.

Kendal (UK)

The UK’s premiere festival, and to many one of the homes of UK mountain culture. Sadly, I’mve never yet had a film picked for Kendal. I intend to rectify that soon.

NZ Mountain Film Festival (NZ)

Wanaka and Queenstown are two of the most beautiful towns that I’mve ever been too. That alone is a good enough reason to visit this festival!

Adventure Fest, UK

This was the first festival that a film of mine ever screened at. It does a wonderfully comprehensive tour of the UK, with a stellar gala event in central London

Banff Mountain Film Festival (Canada)

This is probably the biggest of all. Taking places over a week in the Canadian Rockies, it attracts (and accepts) only the best filmmaking talent. Last year, Alastair and I made the journey there to watch our film in competition. It seemed a great opportunity to fit in another tiny adventure’¦.

Honorary mention:

Pakistan International Adventure Festival

I got an email last year from the first ever adventure film festival in Pakistan, wanting to show one of my films. I wish I could have gone ‘“ it’s fantastic to see such a beautiful country embracing the world of Adventure festivals

I really like the one we have here in Copenhagen, a really good mix of big international films and quirky Nordic originals – definitely a strong Norway, Sweden and Greenland presence which gives a new perspective on Scandinavian adventures.

Destination X

Adventure travel series Destination X has been officially picked up to series by NBC .

The show is expected to air on the network in 2025 and the U.S. version of the Belgian format will be produced by production company Twofour , which is also making a separate British version for the BBC.

The BBC greenlit its own version last year with Twofour producing.

It is a similar model employed on breakout mystery format The Traitors.

Destination X sees a group of contestants go on the road trip of a lifetime but they have no idea of their location. In order to win, they must figure out their mystery locations. Once they’re on the blacked-out Destination X bus, the journey turns into a real-life game board, with challenges designed to offer clues as to their location, along with a few misdirects to keep them guessing.

At the end of each episode, the contestant who places an X on a map furthest from the actual location packs their bags. The first participant to reach Destination X will be crowned the winner.

Twofour, which is owned by British broadcaster ITV, is behind series such as Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveller . It will co-produce the NBC version with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Production will begin later this year.

Caroline Davies, Andy Cadman, Dan Adamson and David Clews will exec produce the NBC version.

“ Destination X is one of the most unique and innovative formats we’ve seen in a long time, and it’s so big we partnered with the BBC again to shoot two shows at once,” said Corie Henson, EVP, Unscripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “This show is an epic international travel adventure combined with the ultimate guessing game. Even if you’ve never been on a plane, you can play along.”

“The entire Twofour team couldn’t be more proud to have won the tender to produce this incredible adventure format, particularly given the pedigree of the other companies in the process,” said Dan Adamson, Twofour MD. “Our editorial ambition for this project is fortunately matched by our best-in-class production team, who constantly make the impossible possible. We are excited to be on this journey with our talented producing partners at UTAS and grateful to the brilliant commissioning teams at both NBCU and the BBC for the hard work and creativity they have already put into the process.”

‘Sasquatch Sunset’ Review: Big Feet and Small Brains

Four unrecognizably hairy actors, including Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough, play mythical creatures in this endearingly bonkers movie.

In the outdoors, a sasquatch touches a butterfly sitting on his finger.

By Jeannette Catsoulis

If ever a movie seemed destined — nay, designed — for cult status or ignominy, “Sasquatch Sunset” is it. An initial glance suggests the kind of entertainment that emerges from late-night, bongwater-scented dorm rooms; yet surrender to its shaggy rhythms and you’ll find this sometimes tiresome portrait of a family of mythical beasts is not without intelligence and a strangely mesmeric intent.

Set in a North American forest (and filmed in the California Redwoods), the movie wraps four dauntless actors in layers of matted, gray-brown hair and impressively molded prostheses. Thus disguised, they lumber through a year of mating, childbirth, death and discovery, unburdened by names or lines of dialogue. To communicate, they grunt and yowl and gesture with a serio-comic zeal that earned my reluctant admiration. It must have been murderously sweaty inside those suits.

Little by little, personalities seep out. The alpha male (Nathan Zellner, who co-directed with his brother, David Zellner) is grumpy, aggressive and disruptively randy, courting furious rejection from the group’s sole female (Riley Keough). Her preferred partner (Jesse Eisenberg) is a gentler, more thoughtful soul, as is what appears to be their son (Christophe Zajac-Denek). Predators and poisonous fungi threaten the unwary, but these hirsute hillocks are mostly a danger to themselves — as the alpha will learn when he seems bent on visiting his lust on a hungry mountain lion.

A sincere gift to Bigfoot believers or a surreal cinematic prank, “Sasquatch Sunset” mimes the familiar beats of the nature documentary. This may be a one-joke movie, but it’s an oddly endearing jest, the beasts’ resemblance to primates tweaking our empathy. Even as their infantile, often disgusting antics become tedious, the film’s tone shifts from daft to tenderly melancholic as signs of human encroachment on their habitat multiply. The contents of an unattended campsite — especially a cassette player and a mirror — prove transfixing and unnerving; a paved road provokes the evacuation of every available body fluid. It’s a revolting sight, but also a touching one. We can see they’re terrified.

The roots of “Sasquatch Sunset” reach all the way back to 2011, when the Zellners’ four-minute film, “Sasquatch Birth Journal 2,” played at the Sundance Film Festival, highlighting the brothers’ inclination to cast a serious eye on patently unserious material. Since then, they have continued to treat preposterous stories — “Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter” (2015) , “Damsel” (2018) — with disarming gravitas. This time, they’re ably assisted by the marvelous cinematographer Mike Gioulakis, who, in films like “It Follows” (2015) and “Old” (2021) , has shown particular skill in giving a sublimely unsettling patina to ridiculous ideas. Here, his peaceful wildlife shots capture the natural world with a quiet awe, giving the forest a majesty unearned by the woolly dimwits it shelters and whose survival seems unlikely.

Positioning the sasquatches as threatened rather than threatening, “Sasquatch Sunset,” as its title suggests, is an oddball meditation on one species’ decline. Maybe even our own.

Sasquatch Sunset Rated R for spilled intestines and a perpendicular penis. Running time: 1 hour 29 minutes. In theaters.

About the Agave Heritage Festival

The Agave: In the seventeenth century, Francisco Ximénez described its centrality. “ Of no other plant,” he wrote in his Historia Natural of 1615, “is there such abundance in New Spain. If people would learn to live in moderation and balance, as is reasonable, this plant would be sufficient to supply all human needs”.

The mission of the Agave Heritage Festival, now in its 16 th  year, is to create an opportunity to all who are interested in continuing to explore and celebrate the cultural, sustainable, and commercial significance of the agave across borders. Founded in 2008, the Tucson based Agave Heritage Foundation has grown to include the ever-expanding exploration and uses of the Agave plant in its many forms. The festival has since become a city-wide destination event that spotlights the southwest region through the lens of the agave plant. The Agave Heritage Festival celebrates the unique importance and sustainability of the agave plant and borderlands culture with seminars, tasting events and world-class culinary events. Coachella was the gold standard of music festivals. Has it lost its shine?

Thousands of concertgoers raise their arms up at an outdoor venue under curved rafters at Coachella.

In 2015, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was one of the hottest tickets in town, selling out in record time: 40 minutes. AC/DC brought the house down with an electric set. Madonna planted a kiss on Drake on stage. Kanye West made a surprise appearance during the Weeknd’s performance.

Ahead of Coachella’s start on Friday, tickets for the second weekend of the festival are still available (it took a month for the first weekend to sell out), and resale tickets are going for well below face value on StubHub and other secondary resellers in an unprecedented year of sluggish sales — the slowest in a decade.

So what happened?

18 acts we can’t wait to see at Coachella 2024

With more than 100 artists on Coachella’s lineup, here’s who to catch at the festival this year, from Sacramento metal band Deftones to Argentine DJ-producer Bizarrap.

April 10, 2024

After the festival expanded from one weekend to two in 2012, it sold out almost every year since then — from that sub-hour whir in 2015 to four-plus hours in 2022 in its post-COVID return. The following year marked the first time in 11 years that the event did not sell out both weekends. At full capacity, the fest drew up to 125,000 concertgoers a day.

Dave Brooks, Billboard’s senior director of live music and touring, said the dip in sales and fan interest is “a natural off-cycle” for Coachella.

“I don’t buy that the Coachella brand is permanently diminished at all,” Brooks said. “Obviously this was an off-year, [but] it’s hands-down one of the best experiences out there.”

Drake, in a black T-shirt, holds his mic out to the audience at Coachella.

Still, the Coachella craze from about a decade ago has notably faded. Rising prices, a less buzzy lineup than years past and stiff competition in the live music space are all likely to blame.

Although interest has decreased, Coachella ticket prices have not. Before fees, general admission tickets cost $499 to $549 and VIP tickets are going for $1,069 to $1,269.

With lodging, transportation, parking and food expenses each racking up hundreds of dollars, some might think the cost isn’t quite worth the experience.

But after a year when fans shelled out “insane amounts of money” for Taylor Swift and Beyoncé’s concerts, Stig Edgren, a live event producer and lecturer in music industry at UCLA, said the lineup is more likely to blame for this year’s slump.

Coachella 2024: Everything you need to know about the festival

Your guide to Coachella 2024, from who’s playing, how to get tickets and what to eat at the festival to the party scene and how to watch at home on YouTube.

The internet was divided after Goldenvoice, the festival’s founder and producer, announced the performers in January. Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator and Doja Cat are headlining with special guest No Doubt, and Edgren said the demand for these artists “just isn’t there this year.”

Goldenvoice didn’t respond to The Times’ requests for comment.

Del Rey and Doja Cat both wrapped up tours at the end of 2023 and Tyler, the Creator performed at his Camp Flog Gnaw Festival in November, so fans may have recently seen the headliners at their respective shows and festival appearances.

This year’s artists also don’t have the same rabid fan bases as previous headliners, like last year’s international stars Bad Bunny and Blackpink, and Brooks said the lineup lacks the “commercially successful music stories” that past years have boasted.

Lady Gaga performs at Coachella atop a pyramid of six men, all dressed in black.

Other notable headliners include Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Frank Ocean. The latter caused a stir last year with his divisive performance and subsequent cancellation of his Weekend 2 set, which outraged festival-goers and possibly deterred future attendance.

There are also tough competitors in the festival space with flashier lineups than Coachella. Stagecoach , the popular country music festival, will take over the same Indio polo grounds starting April 26 with headliners Miranda Lambert, Morgan Wallen and Eric Church. The Lovers & Friends festival will hit Las Vegas a week later, boasting a lengthy list of headliners, including Usher, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg and the Backstreet Boys.

That same weekend is packed with festivals across the country. Headliners Post Malone, Stevie Nicks and Noah Kahan will lead the Lovin’ Life Music Fest in Charlotte, N.C. Weezer, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters will take the stage at the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta. Sting, Incubus and My Morning Jacket will perform closer to home in Redondo Beach at the Beach L ife Festival . The Rolling Stones, Chris Stapleton, Hozier, Queen Latifah and more will close out the second weekend of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival .

The saturation in the concert and festival market that came with the spike in live performances after the pandemic may also be causing fan fatigue that could be hurting Coachella’s sales.

Bill Werde, the director of Syracuse University’s music business program and author of the industry newsletter “ Full Rate No Cap ,” said the pandemic affected the promotion of festivals and concerts and fans’ purchasing habits. As the availability of Coachella tickets ahead of its opening weekend shows, fewer people are buying tickets well in advance of events, Werde said.

“People want to look at something like this and want to pronounce the death of Coachella and it’s just too soon,” Werde said. “This is one of the strangest times we’ve ever experienced in live music in the history of the business, which is to say, specifically, this rebound from a period of not having shows for a couple of years. Finding out what the new normal looks like is going to take a couple more years.”

Beyoncé, in a pink sweatshirt embellished with “ΒΔΚ” and denim cut-offs, performs on stage at Coachella.

Werde said the lack of early commitment from ticket buyers coupled with the increased cost of putting on a show creates a “dicey environment for festivals.” Other major fests across the country, namely Jay-Z’s Made in America Festival , have been canceled this year.

Another factor for those hesitant to take the plunge could be the allure of the “Couchella” experience. Thanks to Goldenvoice’s partnership with YouTube, fans can livestream performances from up to six stages from the comfort of their homes. Beyoncé’s 105-minute set attracted a record 458,000 simultaneous global viewers on YouTube in 2018. The festival’s opening weekend amassed 41 million unique viewers.

“When you’re standing at the back of 50,000 people, it’s like, ‘Well, shoot, I can get a better seat at home and then I can do Uber Eats and have seven margaritas and this will be great,” said Tommy Dietrick, founder of the Desert Stars Festival in Joshua Tree.

The target audience for Coachella, the die-hard music fans who once duked it out for tickets, may have also changed their concert-going preferences.

“The consumer may be growing up a bit and may not want to be standing in a mud pit or in the hot sun,” Edgren said. “When you go to Coachella, you’re basically standing up the whole time and it’s an ordeal.”

VAMPIRE WEEKEND

Vampire Weekend is playing Coachella’s first weekend

The long-running indie-rock band will perform on the festival’s Outdoor Theatre stage on Saturday evening.

Dietrick, who also produces music at Joshua Tree Recording Studio, noted that Coachella attendees now get an experience that is removed from the “community element that music is actually really all about.”

“They’ve squeezed too hard on the class people that were going there to escape and have fun,” he said.

Coachella also seems to attract a different kind of music fan today than it did at its inception and in its early years, when it boasted legendary headliners like Paul McCartney, Prince, Nine Inch Nails and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. With fewer rock bands and more brand partnerships, the festival has been criticized for becoming a “plaything for influencers,” as Werde put it.

Beyond the changes to Coachella’s audience, the music and entertainment industries are also experiencing shifts in terms of what it takes to become famous and build a following. Werde said the music world is facing “enormous fragmentation” because of the volume of musicians creating and sharing their work online. He called this new phase “the age of a thousand niches” and noted that fans’ following of celebrities is getting wider, not deeper.

Taylor Swift doesn't disclose her songs' subjects, but it's easy to connect the dots. "Dear John" puts her former relationship with John Mayer under the microscope.

Taylor Swift at Coachella? These are the 3 sets where our experts think she could appear

Taylor Swift isn’t on the Coachella lineup, but our experts have some ideas as to where the biggest pop star in the world may show up in Indio.

“These are real changes that are happening in the star system, and festivals are dependent on the star system. Festivals create this experience around all these stars and if those stars get smaller, those festivals get smaller. If those stars get fewer, those festivals are going to struggle.”

In its 23rd year, Coachella seems to be reaching a stabilizing point where it is no longer the hottest ticket of the year but is still attracting a wide audience.

“The form of struggle that Coachella is having is probably a form of struggle that a lot of people would kill to have,” Werde said.

Like fellow long-running music festival Lollapalooza in Chicago, Edgren said Coachella has “settled” into a new phase and will likely continue to experience ebbs and flows with its sales in coming years.

“There’s no way any event or festival like that can sustain that kind of success forever. There’s just no way,” Edgren said. “There has to be dips, some years are slightly better than others. They’re not the new kid on the block anymore.”
