Pet-Friendly Travel Options: Your Complete Guide

pet on tours

We love travelling. Whether it’s taking off somewhere far, far away for a month or simply sneaking away for a long weekend, travel unlocks all kinds of adventures. And we don’t only travel for pleasure and we aren’t always travelling alone. Sometimes we’re boarding a plane or taking a long road trip because we’re moving or taking a gap year, and that means our furry friends are coming along with us.

But travel can be taxing, tiring, and generally stressful and that’s without a dog, cat, or iguana in tow! So let’s make it simple. We’ve scoured the web, asked our experienced friends, and even travelled with pets ourselves to put together this comprehensive guide to your pet-friendly travel options!

Booking accommodation with a pet

So whether your trip is for business or pleasure, it will most likely include a stay overnight in a hotel, motel or lodge. But are you allowed to bring your pet? And if you are, what are the exact circumstances or conditions you’ll need to abide by?

Luckily more and more places are starting to accommodate pets but depending on where you’re travelling the rules will all be different. Not everyone defines “pet-friendly” under the same conditions! So here’s a list of questions we suggest asking your accommodation providers before you book:

A man and his dog in a car

  • What type of rooms are available to pet owners? The rooms that allow pets are typically on the main floor with easy access to the outdoors. If you were planning to book a fancier room, they may not be able to welcome your dog or cat.
  • What types, sizes, and amounts of pets are allowed? Accommodations that allow dogs may not necessarily allow other pets, including cats. Others permit pets under a certain size and may restrict the number of pets per room.
  • Are their special rules or restrictions that apply to pets? Your hotel might request that pets stay off the furniture and out of certain common areas like beaches or outdoor dining areas. Many will not permit pets to be left unattended in rooms, even for short periods of time.
  • Are there any services available for pets? Plan to sightsee but would prefer to leave your friend at the hotel for a couple of hours? You can ask if your accommodation offers any pet-sitting services or knows of trustworthy local animal daycares. You can also ask if they have a list of nearby dog parks, or if they’re able to provide a water bowl and food.

How to fly with your pet

According to the Air Transport Association, over 500,000 animals are shipped via the air every year. While nearly all of these experiences go off without a hitch, there’s an undeniable truth that air travel can be tough on your pet. Which airline you choose can make a difference in how easy the journey is, so bookmark this story for later before reading on.

Read the article: The 20 Most Pet-Friendly International Airlines Ranked

A yorkie at the top of a mountain

Here are 8 steps for flying with your pet:

  • Limit the use of sedatives. Contrary to what you might be tempted to do, the veterinarians we spoke to advised against the use of sedatives and tranquillizers. If your pet is kept in the plane’s hold, these types of medications can make it feel even colder to your furry friends and put them at risk of suffering dangerous drops in temperatures.
  • Get a health certificate from your veterinarian (that includes vaccinations) . This health certificate needs to meet the specific requirements of your destination, as well as your airline. Usually, these certificates should only be obtained no more than 10 days before the flight to ensure the information is valid and up to date.
  • Enquire about quarantines . If you’re taking an international flight, check in advance if your pet will need to be quarantined upon arrival. This can also change depending on their breed so be sure to thoroughly check in advance as quarantine times can be significant.
  • Pick the right crate (and include food/water) . Use a portable kennel that meets your airline’s requirements and is well-reviewed by other travellers.
  • Book a nonstop flight . Nonstop flights are simply easier and ensure fewer things can go wrong (think delays and unexpected rerouting).
  • Feed your animal 4 hours before boarding Keep your pet happy, healthy and full by making sure they’re well-fed and hydrated fours before take-off to ensure they have time to go to the bathroom.
  • Notify the airline you’ll be flying with your pet . When booking your flight, let your airline know you will be travelling with your pet and take note of the airline’s policies and requirements for travelling with your pet. Two weeks before your flight, check with your airline again to make sure you’ve done everything you need to.
  • Put a detailed collar on your pet (and their crate) . Have your pet wear a collar that includes relevant identifying information with your address, and a friend’s address and phone number (in case of emergency), and a rabies tag if one is required.

A person hiking with their dog by the sea

While some people may question why you’re bringing your pet along with you on your relaxing holiday or gap year, many pet owners know that travelling with pets, when done right and responsibly, only strengthens the bond between the two of you – and makes your trip even better. Remember to understand your pet’s limits, though: if you notice that flying makes them especially anxious, or they have any medical issues that arise from or are worsened by travel, consider limiting how far you take them. Otherwise, get ready for the trip of a lifetime – both yours and your pet’s!

10 Amazing Adventures to Take With Your Dog

These thrilling outdoor experiences are fit for both you and your furry friend.

Dogs enhance any outdoor experience with their unyielding desire to explore, so it’s no surprise travelers are making space for Fido on even their most adventurous trips. The travel industry has taken note of the demand, and many outfitters now offer pet-friendly tours and accommodations year-round—so there’s no excuse to leave your dog behind on your next kayak, bike, or backpack journey.

Next time you hit the road, bring your pup and take on one of these dog-friendly excursions.

Run the Peterson Ridge Rumble Race in Sisters, Oregon

The 20-mile Peterson Ridge Rumble , is one of the best a handful of trail races that allow dogs to join in the adventure. The April race takes place just outside of the small town of Sisters in Central Oregon . Climb the moderate trails and take in the jaw-dropping views of the Three Sisters mountains. Ample aid stations provide snacks and water for both humans and dogs and all dogs receive a pig’s ear at the finish.

Tips: Like humans, pups must also train for long-distance running. Start slow and follow a plan that increases mileage by no more than 10% each week.

A woman shares a joyful moment with her pup after setting up camp below the peak of Mount Sneffels in Oregon.

Hike through Blaine Basin in Ouray, Colorado

Walk among the region's 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks and fields of wildflowers in the infrequently visited Blaine Basin in Colorado ’s San Juan Mountains. The moderate hike includes stream crossings, waterfalls, and the best view of Mount Sneffels northern face. Let your pup splash in Wilson Creek and sprint across open meadows in this secluded region.

Tip: Camp at one of the many scenic spots in the Basin, or if you want more of a challenge and greater solitude, climb the steep path to the high bench between Mount Sneffels and Blaine Peak for in-your-face views of both peaks.

A cyclist pulls his dog behind him in a carrier as he travels across Oregon's Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway.

Bicycle Through Oregon’s Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway

With the most extensive system of any state, Oregon 's Scenic Bikeway program has some of the best cycling in the country. The 132-mile Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway takes cyclists on an epicurean feast of Oregon’s most fertile farmlands. There’s no better way to enjoy this two-wheeled excursion than with your dog. Tip: Flash floods are a real danger, so never enter a canyon when the forecast calls for rain or thunderstorms. Rattlesnakes are present in the area, so be aware and keep your dog on leash.

Kayak with Aqua Adventures in San Diego, California

Aqua Adventures knows that dogs need a variety of stimulation outside of regular walks, so the group welcomes dogs on all of their tours. IIf paddling with a dog is new to you, opt for the introductory class to ensure enjoyment and safe paddling. Once everyone has their sea legs, rent a kayak and head over to Fiesta Island to let your pup run around at the off-leash dog park.

Tip: Aqua Adventures provides doggie life jackets if you don’t have your own, but bring along high-value treats to reward your pup as he becomes used to being on the water.

A dog trails behind a cross-country skier as they travel to a yurt for an overnight stay in northeastern Minnesota.

Hut-to-Hut Cross-Country Ski in Northeastern Minnesota

Follow gray wolf tracks while cross-country skiing along the groomed 19-mile Banadad Ski Trail on a two-day yurt-to-yurt adventure with Boundary Country Trekking . To really tire your pup and give yourself a little break, try skijoring. The local population in this delightfully remote wilderness includes wildlife like birds, pine marten, moose, and, of course, gray wolves. Camp hosts shuttle food, gear, and water to your yurt—leaving it toasty warm upon arrival as they prepare a Mongolian fire pot for dinner.

Tip: Before taking the trip, make sure your pup can walk 12 miles in one day. Rates start at $375 per person for a two-night trip.

Pet Tours | Dog-Friendly Cruises and More

If we’re being well and truly honest, we would all take our pets along on every vacation if we could. Considering how many pet owners treat their animals with birthday presents, it’s not hard to imagine taking your pet along on an adventure.

Now more than ever, individuals are taking their beloved animal companions with them to pet-friendly hotels and cafes rather than leaving them at home.

While it sounds appealing to bring your pet along on your escapades, it’s important to take into account the stress levels of your favorite fur/feathered creature. While there are a few herbal options to help ease some anxiety in your pet when faced with adventuring in the outside world, the situation is going to differ depending on the type of pet you own. For more information on herbal remedies for stress in animals, check out CBD oil for pets South Africa .

This article is here to offer some tips and advice on touring with your pets, as well as mention a few ideal, pet-friendly tours.

Pet-Friendly Tours

Top Dog Pet Travel

Pet-Friendly Cruise Lines

Pet Tours Cruise

Pet-friendly cruise lines can be a little hard to come by. Most cruises do allow service animals on board with their owners. But finding a cruise line that will allow you to bring your pets, purely for the sake of having them tag along, may be a little difficult.

While some pet owners like to bend the rules in terms of specifying whether or not their pet is a necessary emotional support animal, there are other options that don’t involve loopholes.

For pet-friendly cruises from New York, the Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is a viable option. This pet-friendly cruise ship moves between New York City and South Hampton. Provided you book a spot for your pet, this cruise will allow you to bring your pet along with you on board.

Take note, however, your pet will not be allowed to stay with you in your cabin but will, rather be housed in one of the kennels onboard the cruise. Pets will be allowed playtime and will be served food but will be confined to the kennels every night. It’s also important to note that the waiting list for such a booking can be incredibly long, so best book ahead of schedule! This cruise is also only accepting of dogs and cats. Any other winged, scaled, or smaller furry beings will not be permitted.

So long as you stick to the rules and consider the needs of your furry friend, a pet-friendly cruise is an awesome adventure to be had with your pet. While you may have to bid them goodbye every night, days on this cruise will be exciting and memorable for both you and your fur baby.

Walking Tours (USA)

pet on tours

Walking tours in new locations can be a momentous experience for the senses for both you and your pet. For those residing or vacationing in the US, there are plenty of walking tours geared towards indulging both you and your pets. With so many sights, scents, and sounds, USA walking tours are a fun way to hang out with your pet and take in the sights.

Walking tours are best for the kind of pets that can manage longer walks out in the open, such as dogs and possibly some adventurous cats. Although, there are a few bird species that could enjoy a ride on your shoulder as you walk.

You could take the iconic Asbury Park Photo Tour along the Asbury Park boardwalk. During this tour, your guide will snap some photos of you and your pet in front of the historic landmarks and street art. This pet tour can include up to five guests and afterward, you’d get to keep all the photos.

If you’re thinking of adding a little more excitement to the mix, you could participate in the NAWLINS SH’NANIGANS Scavenger Hunt in New Orleans. This pet tour will take you on an exhilarating scavenger hunt through New Orleans as you take in the sights and participate in a few fun activities along the way.

This event can accommodate up to thirty guests, so bring your friends and their own adventurous pets along for the ride.

There are a number of exciting US walking tours for you to experience with your pet. From pristine dog parks to informative, historical tours, there’s no reason your pet shouldn’t see it all with you.

Some Final Thoughts on Pet Tours

Pet Tours

There are countless pet-friendly adventures and tours for you to experience. So long as you remain mindful and aware of your pet’s needs and stresses, you are bound to enjoy a vacation or small tour with your favorite animal companion.

So grab your leash and hold onto your hat as you set out on your new travel experience with your best furry friend!

A few universal guidelines: keep your pet on a six-foot (or shorter) leash at all times, always bag and throw away your dog’s waste, and never leave an animal unattended in a locked vehicle.

The Most Dog-Friendly National Parks in the U.S.

From miles of accessible trails to nearby boarding services to dog safety, these are the best (and worst) parks to visit with your best friend

Heading out the door? Read this article on the Outside app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

Ah, the great outdoors. The sun on your face, the wind at your back, and (hopefully) a space to explore with your furry pal. While a walk in the park might seem like the most obvious place in the world to bring a dog, most U.S. national parks have strict rules regarding if and where pets are allowed. Guidelines can vary greatly, so we’ve compiled a list of each one, ranking them from most to least dog-friendly, to help you plan where to take your next parks adventure with your canine companion.

First, a few universal guidelines: keep your pet on a six-foot (or shorter) leash at all times, always bag and throw away your dog’s waste, and never leave an animal unattended in a locked vehicle.

The metrics we used to rank the parks included miles of accessible trails, pet-friendly boarding, nearby kennel services, wildlife safety, travel restrictions, alternative hikes, and viewpoint access.

1. Acadia National Park, Maine

In Acadia , dogs rule. They’re allowed on 100 miles of trails and 45 miles of carriage roads, except steep, ladder-heavy trails like Beehive and Precipice and gardens like Sieur de Monts. Also, there’s no swimming in lakes (people aren’t allowed to either), since they’re public water sources. All campgrounds allow pets except Duck Harbor.

2. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah boasts over 500 miles of hiking trails, only 20 of which are inaccessible to pets. This means the 115.5 miles of the Appalachian Trail that run through the park are fair game for a pooch-friendly thru-hike. Not only that, dogs are allowed in all campgrounds and in pullouts along the famous 105-mile Skyline Drive, an ideal road trip where Fido can feel the wind on his face.

3. Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

Inside Petrified Forest, pets are allowed on all park trails and roads and in official wilderness areas, but they must always be kept on a six-foot leash and cannot enter buildings. If you’re a backpacker, there’s no better place to watch the sunset than in the park’s northern Painted Desert with man’s best friend.

4. New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, West Virginia

At America’s newest national park , dogs are allowed on all trails within the park and preserve. Highlights include the 2.4-mile Endless Wall Trail, with fantastic vistas into the gorge, and the 3.2-mile Grandview Rim Trail. Waterfall lovers won’t want to miss Sandstone and Brooks Falls. Pets are even allowed at the crag with you (on a leash).

5. White Sands National Park, New Mexico

Unlike most national parks, White Sands allows pets basically anywhere people can go, except inside buildings, which means nine miles of trails and backcountry dune exploration to amble through with your furry friend. Just be mindful of high sand temperatures so your pup’s paws don’t get scorched.

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio

Leashed pets are welcome on 110 miles of trails at Cuyahoga, including 20 miles of the multi-use Towpath Trail. Just steer clear of the East Rim mountain-bike area, park buildings, and the Scenic Railroad. Meander through historic towns and brilliant fall foliage at this midwestern park.

7. Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Sometimes it feels like there are fewer rules up north. At Wrangell–St. Elias, pets can visit  the backcountry, trails, and the Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark area, but they cannot enter visitor centers. That being said, the park recommends keeping your dog leashed at all times, because trapping is common in the national preserve.

8. Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

Though pets are not permitted in the caves or cave buildings, Mammoth Cave Lodge runs a kennel for to house your pup when you go on a cave tour. Plus, the park’s Woodland Cottages have pet-friendly rooms, and the campground allows pets. After you’ve seen the cave, there are over 70 miles of surface-level trails that you and your leashed pooch are free to explore.

9. Congaree National Park, South Carolina

Take Fido along with you all of Congaree’s trails , including the famous boardwalk. Pets are also allowed in park campgrounds. And Carolina Outdoor Adventures  welomes dogs that fit and stay in kayaks on its guided trips.

10. Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Similar to many other more urban national parks, Hot Springs is very dog friendly . Leashed pets can trek all 26 miles of trails, and pet-waste stations are located on both ends of Bathhouse Row, as well as in the campground. Pets cannot go inside park buildings or bathhouses, however.

11. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Pets are allowed on all of the highly visited trails above the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, including the 13-plus-mile Rim Trail, which features outstanding panoramas of the rust-colored ravine.

Pets can’t ride shuttle buses or go below the rim but are welcome at both Mather and Desert View Campgrounds, as well as at Trailer Village and throughout developed areas. The Yavapai Lodge has pet-friendly rooms. Board your pup at the South Rim Kennel  should you want to hike into the canyon. On the North Rim, pets can walk the Bridle Path (greenway) and the portion of the Arizona Trail that runs to the entrance station. No kennel on this side is available.

pet on tours

12. Yosemite National Park, California

At Yosemite , dogs are allowed in all developed areas and on paved roads, sidewalks, and bicycle paths, including the 11.5-mile Yosemite Valley Loop Trail, which passes by Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, the Merced River, and Bridalveil Fall. Pets can explore the easy 2.25-mile Wawona Meadow Loop, plus all campgrounds except walk-ins (like Camp 4) and group sites.

Pets are not permitted in buildings, on shuttles, or in lodges, but Yosemite Hospitality  runs a kennel service if you want to go off on a dirt trail or backpack overnight.

13. North Cascades National Park, Washington

Dogs can’t go  on most trails in North Cascades, but the few they can hike are incredible. Pets are welcome along all 18 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in the park and are allowed in the adjoining Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas, giving you plenty of room to adventure. Pro tip: pets can walk the few miles of national forest bordering North Cascades Highway, making a few famous. North Cascades trails perfect for an afternoon outing.

14. Olympic National Park, Washington

Dogs are not welcome on most Olympic trails; however, the park has gone to great lengths to list a few that are fine for puppers—and some are pretty stellar. Pets can visit the first half-mile of Rialto Beach and the beaches between the Hoh and Quinault Reservations. The Peabody Creek, Madison Falls, Spruce Railroad, and July Creek Loop Trails are OK for them, too. Campers, rejoice! All park campgrounds, picnic areas, and dirt and paved roads are Fido friendly.

15. Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri

It might not have the allure of some of America’s wilder national parks—no Half Dome or craggy peaks here—but Gateway Arch is an impressive sight on its own, and leashed pets are welcome on the park’s many paved routes, including the winding 1.6-mile Gateway Arch National Park Trail and the extensive Riverfront Trail. Leashed dogs can even hop aboard the one-hour scenic riverboat cruises. Just don’t bring your pet inside the arch itself.

16. Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana

Indiana Dunes allows leashed dogs to frolic on many beaches and cool down in Lake Michigan. Check the dates before you head out, though: pets can’t visit certain beaches from the Friday of Memorial Day to the Monday of Labor Day. That said, they can explore every beach east of the adjacent  Indiana Dunes State Park  and all trails and beaches within the state park year-round. Dogs are allowed on all national-park trails except Great Marsh, Pinhook Bog, and Glenwood Dunes. We recommend the 0.7-mile Dune Ridge Trail.

pet on tours

17. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Colorado

Dune-loving doggos will adore this Colorado destination , as pets are permitted to play on the massive, sandy hills up to the first high ridge, allowing for miles of off-trail exploration. Afterward they can cool off in Medano Creek. Just pay attention to the temperatures as the afternoon sun swells—sand can get as hot as 150 degrees in the summer. Away from the dunes, pets are welcome on the Dunes Overlook Trail and the Mosca Pass Trail, as well as at the developed campground and all picnic areas.

18. Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Leashed pets can walk several stunning trails within this national park (though none of them overlook the lake itself). Currently, you can take your pup along on Grayback Drive and on the Godfrey Glen, Lady of the Woods, and Pacific Crest Trails (just not the alternate PCT section, which has a lake view but is not pet friendly). Thirty-three miles of the PCT traverses the park, giving you and your pup ample options for overnight backpacking. If you’re looking for those sapphire-hued lake vistas, you’ll want to leash up your pooch and take them for a stroll along the park’s quarter-mile paved promenade at Rim Village. Leashed pets are allowed in the campground at Mazama Village and within 50 feet of any paved area, so feel free to circumnavigate the lake and enjoy those magical pullouts with your pet.

19. Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

As one of the few water-based national parks in the system, it may seem counterintuitive to bring your pup along for the ride up to Voyageurs, but dogs are allowed in all front-country campgrounds within the park and on private boats. Ebel’s Houseboats is a great dog-friendly option for families to get out and about in the park ($50 per pet, maximum of two).

20. Zion National Park, Utah

Only a few of the country’s most visited national parks allow dogs to roam their trails, and at Zion, the one pet-friendly trail is a stunner . Furry companions are welcome on the spectacular 3.4-mile Pa’rus Trail, which borders the Virgin River and has epic views into Zion Canyon. Pets can also share campgrounds and picnic areas, along with all public roads and the grounds of Zion Lodge. Dog boarding is available nearby, should you desire to go on a longer adventure within the park.

21. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

At Bryce Canyon , you can bring your pet on all paved roads and pullouts and in the campgrounds, but pets are also allowed (leashed) along the paved shared-use path between the park entrance and Inspiration Point, and on the breathtaking one-mile (round-trip) path between Sunrise and Sunset Points, offering some of the park’s best viewpoints of the canyon.

22. Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Lake Clark is very  dog friendly , and pets are allowed on all trails—that is, if you can get them there. Just making it out to this remote sanctuary requires a small commercial or privately chartered flight from Anchorage. Be mindful of the risks of bringing a dog into the Alaskan wilds. Wolves, grizzly bears, and moose are all incredibly dangerous to both humans and pets, and dogs should be kept on a leash at all times.

23. Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

In Capitol Reef’s central hub, there are a few dog-friendly trails, like the stunning jaunt from the visitor center to the Fruita Campground and along the Fremont River Trail from the campground to Hattie’s Field. Pets can also visit  unlocked orchards, so your fruit-picking dreams can be fulfilled with Fido in tow. Check the orchard map summer through fall to see what’s in season. Pups are allowed in all car campgrounds, including primitive options like Cedar Mesa and Cathedral Valley. And if a long bout of exercise is what you’re after, you’ll love that pets are allowed along all paved and dirt roads open to public vehicles (which Capitol Reef is full of), both graded and off-road. Take your dog out for a stroll on the rugged end portion of the breathtaking scenic drive or along Notom Bullfrog Road to see the scale of the 100-mile long Waterpocket Fold firsthand.

24. Badlands National Park , South Dakota

Anywhere a car can go, so can pets at Badlands , which means you and your dog can explore the Badlands Loop Road and soak up all the incredible sights of the Wall formation. They are also allowed on dirt byways, like the  Old Northeast Road  near popular Cedar Pass, a great place to get away from the highway noise. Just steer clear of any prairie dog areas, such as Sage Creek Campground and Roberts Prairie Dog Town.

25. Death Valley National Park, California and Nevada

As in most parks, pets at Death Valley are not allowed on trails or in backcountry areas (yes, this includes boardwalks and paved trails). However, the park itself boasts a wealth of dirt roads with spectacular panoramas of the rugged mountains that are just as fun as singletrack for walking your pooch. The park recommends 20 Mule Team Canyon, Devils Golf Course Road, Cottonwood-Marble Access Road, Mustard Canyon Road, Titus Canyon Road, and the Father Crowley Point spur road, all of which afford extraordinary sights of the things that make Death Valley famous: colorful badlands, rocky canyons, and crumbling geological oddities. At night, snuggle up in any of the park’s developed campgrounds with your furry friend.

26. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado

Wind through striking overlooks of sinister-looking Black Canyon with your dog as your copilot . Pets are welcome on park roads, in campgrounds, and at all pullouts, as well as on a handful of trails, including the Cedar Point Nature Trail, North Rim Chasm View Nature Trail, and Rim Rock Trail. Just check the park website before you go: during the summer (from approximately June 1 to August 15), pets are prohibited on the Rim Rock Trail and in some areas of the South Rim Campground, due to potentially aggressive deer.

27. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina and Tennessee

When visiting Great Smoky Mountains, it’s helpful to know you can bring pets to campgrounds, picnic areas, and along roads, but not on any dirt trails. One of the best roads for dog walking is the famous Cades Cove Loop Road, which goes car-free on summer Wednesdays. The park is also full of viewpoints along its scenic drives, a fantastic way to take in fall’s color show. If you’re dying to get out on a trail, pets can walk two that are multi-use: the 1.9-mile (one-way) Gatlinburg Trail and the 1.5-mile (one-way) Oconaluftee River Trail.

28. Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska

If you’re planning to bring your dog to this Alaskan park, know that adventure options here will be limited. Leashed pets can visit  Denali Park Road and two trails near the park entrance: the Roadside Trail and the bike path. Pets are also allowed in park campgrounds but may not be left tethered and unattended, due to wildlife concerns. Want to spend a day exploring the park on one of its notable green buses?  Dog-boarding options can be found nearby.

pet on tours

29. Joshua Tree National Park, California

While dogs can’t go  on park trails or in the backcountry in Joshua Tree , they are permitted within 100 feet of roads, picnic areas, and campgrounds. A few of the park’s most iconic crags are located within popular campgrounds, meaning your pup could potentially hang out while you climb if you have a friend or two to help keep them under control. In addition to paved roads, Joshua Tree has several graded dirt roads that are just as good as a singletrack stroll with your dog. We recommend Geology Tour Road, Queen Valley Road, and Desert Queen Mine Road. Nearby communities have boarding options if you want to go for a longer hike during your stay.

30. Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

Bring your pup onto roads and sidewalks, as well as to picnic areas and campgrounds at Theodore Roosevelt. Enjoy all 36 miles of the South Unit’s Scenic Loop Drive and stop for views and pee breaks. Another great place to roam with your dog is the sidewalk near the Painted Canyon Visitor Center, an ideal place to take in epic sunsets and the painted badlands. From the town of Medora, hikers can wander out of the park and onto the historic (and pet-friendly) Maah Daah Hey Trail. Kennel services  are located nearby if you’re itching to get out in the park on your own.

31. Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota

Wind Cave is known for its miles of rolling, golden prairie. Dogs are allowed in the grassy areas near the visitor center and on the Prairie Vista and Elk Mountain Campground Trails. Pets can also stay  at the campground but may not be left unattended. Boarding options exist in nearby Hot Springs and Rapid City, if you’re planning to venture into the cave on a ranger-led tour.

32. Yellowstone National Park, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming

Yellowstone is tricky for a dog owner. While pets are not allowed on trails, boardwalks, in the backcountry, or in geothermal areas, they can accompany you within 100 feet of roads, campgrounds, picnic spots, and parking areas. Given that Yellowstone is such an expansive, road-trip-friendly park, that means there’s still plenty for you to see  if you choose to bring your pup. Check out the lovely drive through Lamar Valley, and spot a bison or take in the view at Gibbon Falls. Boarding is also available in many communities outside the park, should you want to go geyser gazing along the park’s many trails.

33. Glacier National Park, Montana

Par for the course, pets are not allowed on any trails or in the backcountry at Glacier National Park, but they can accompany you along any of the picturesque paved roads and at pullouts when you park. Glacier’s front-country campgrounds and picnic areas are also Fido friendly. Since one of the premier activities at this park is driving the well-known Going-to-the-Sun Road, you can still enjoy much of it with your pup in tow. Just outside the park, boarding opportunities  are available if you want to go for a hike or an overnight backpacking trip.

34. Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Due to its highly sensitive ecosystem, only leashed pets are able to accompany you along roadways, in picnic areas (except Mam-A-Gah), and on paved pathways in Saguaro, like the 0.3-mile Desert Ecology Trail and the 0.4-mile Desert Discovery Trail. Pets cannot be left in vehicles or tied up unattended—a precaution that could save them from extreme heat. But there are still plenty of options to see the park’s notorious giant saguaro cacti, whether you’re driving the West District’s Bajada Scenic Loop or the more famous Cactus Forest Scenic Loop in the East District. Saguaro is also a stone’s throw from Tucson, where  boarding options are plentiful.

35. Redwood National Park, California

Leashed pets are allowed to roam on beaches, in developed campgrounds, in picnic areas, and along roads at Redwood. But if you’d like to walk your dog among old-growth forests, the park recommends Cal Barrel Road and Walker Road, both located in nearby state parks.

36. Great Basin National Park, Nevada

Great Basin has strict pet rules : they’re not permitted on trails or in the backcountry, except when leashed on the trail from the town of Baker to the park’s visitor center and on the Lexington Arch Trail (where a four-wheel-drive vehicle is required). There are several dirt roads you can exercise your dog on within the park, or simply enjoy the views from the switchbacks of Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive and set up a picnic at the top with your pup.

pet on tours

37. Big Bend National Park, Texas

A simple rule of thumb in Big Bend is that your pet can only go where your car can go. You’re free to walk your dog along the park’s many dirt and paved roads, and they are welcome at car campsites. Dogs can’t, however, walk on park trails, head into the backcountry, or join you on the river. Kennel services are available in nearby towns for those taking river trips. If you’re dying to hike with your doggo, there are pet-friendly trails in nearby Big Bend State Park.

38. Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico

Though pets can’t come on trails, in the caves, or in the backcountry here, Carlsbad Caverns is still an easy park to visit with a dog in tow, thanks to the concession-run kennel located right next to the cavern entrance. This makes it a breeze to enjoy a one-to-two-hour cave tour and know your pet is safe at ground level.

39. Virgin Islands National Park, Virgin Islands

Surprisingly, leashed pets are welcome on all trails within the Virgin Islands, just not along those dazzling beaches. However, given its remote location, getting your dog to the park can be a hassle. Follow state and local guidelines  regarding rabies certificates, and make sure you’re allowed to fly with your animal.

40. Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

Like many parks on the back half of this list, you can’t walk your dog on park trails or into the backcountry at Guadalupe Mountains, except the three-quarter-mile Pinery Trail and the Pine Springs Campground Connector Trail. That being said, visitors can still take in amazing views of the “top of Texas” and colorful sunsets on the west side of the park. Consider a stroll along the dirt road near Salt Basin Dunes.

41. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

At Grand Teton , pet rules  are a little hardcore. They aren’t permitted on trails, in the backcountry, on multi-use pathways, or along lakeshores. They are, however, allowed to ride inside boats on Jackson Lake. Luckily, there are a wealth of roads with outstanding panoramas of the Tetons that you can drive or walk along with your dog and still get a good sense of the park. We recommend River Road or the road to Lupine Meadows Trailhead for a stroll. You can also bring your dog to all campgrounds, turnouts, and picnic areas.

42. Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

The golden rule at Lassen: dogs can go wherever your car can go, so campgrounds, pullouts, and picnic areas get the green light and are all great places from which to admire Lassen Peak along the park’s 30-mile scenic highway. Pets are not permitted on any hiking trail, in the backcountry, or in any body of water. For a more rustic, wooded experience, check out the Butte Lake area.

43. Everglades National Park, Florida

As in many lower-ranked parks on this list, pets in the Everglades are generally only allowed where vehicles drive. Leashed pets are welcome at picnic areas, along roadside stops, and on private boats touring the park. Some airboat tour companies will even let you hold a small dog in a carrying case between your legs, if you want to go on a proper adventure.

44. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Rocky Mountain is serious about its  pet policy . You can’t bring your pup on or off-trail or walk them on the sensitive meadow and tundra areas. Leashed pets can wander the roads and parking lots and are welcome at all developed campgrounds and picnic areas. Centrally located Moraine Park is a great area to stretch your legs on a roadside jaunt and admire the view.

45. Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Gates of the Arctic’s low standing on this list has less to do with its pet-friendliness and more to do with accessibility and safety. Dogs are allowed all over this 8.4-million-acre expanse in northern Alaska, but visitors must be hypervigilant about wildlife hazards, and unrestrained pets are not permitted to kill wildlife. Lastly, you’ll have to find an aircraft that will take you and your pup. Check with your charter before flying.

46. Kobuk Valley National Park, Alaska

Much like Gates of the Arctic, pet restrictions are stricter in this remote wilderness park. But getting you and your dog to the area safely will be tricky. Check with Brooks Range Aviation or call the area’s flight services before embarking on your trip.

47. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

It’s a common refrain at this point on the list: dogs are not allowed on park trails or in the backcountry here, but as in most parks, they are allowed in campgrounds, picnic areas, and within 25 feet of paved roads. One exception to this rule is the Pacific Crest Trail, which undulates along the park’s eastern boundary. Hikers may walk north or south from Chinook Pass if they’d like to exercise their pupper on trail.

48. Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

There are a few places where leashed dogs may explore Mesa Verde, primarily on marked trails in the Wetherill Mesa section of the park, which includes the five-mile Long House Loop. In other areas, pets are only allowed along paved roadways, in parking lots, and in the campground. They cannot visit archeological sites. Morefield Kennel is available nearby, should you wish to go on a ranger-lead tour of the ruins.

49. Sequoia National Park, California

Due to wildlife and ecosystem concerns, in Sequoia and Kings Canyon, pets are only welcome along paved roads and in campgrounds, parking lots, and picnic areas. If you’d like to see the massive trees  with your pup in tow , check out the Crescent Meadow Picnic Area, or go for a scenic drive along General’s Highway.

50. Kings Canyon National Park, California

Given that Kings Canyon is more of a backcountry park, we’ve nestled it here, right underneath its sister park, Sequoia. The same rules apply.  If you’re itching to get out on trail, nearby Sequoia National Forest  allows leashed pets.

51. Pinnacles National Park, California

Pinnacles follows the car rule , meaning your pet can go anywhere a car goes, which includes paved roads, picnic areas, parking lots, and the campgrounds. The park’s namesake pinnacles are best viewed when entering from the west side, so keep that in mind as there is no through road at this park.

52. Biscayne National Park, Florida

Although Biscayne is primarily a water-based park, what land there is is  surprisingly animal friendly . Furry friends are welcome on the grounds surrounding the visitor center, where you’ll find mangroves and vistas of   several small keys. Pets are also allowed to camp and hike around with you on the developed areas of Elliott Key as long as they are leashed.

53. Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Bring your dog to all areas of this national park and preserve with one exception: pets may not come to Brooks Camp or within five miles of Brooks Camp, due to high visitation. Those planning backcountry trips into the park are more than welcome to bring well-behaved dogs with them but will likely need to charter their own flights.

54. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

If you can work within the state’s strict pet policies , Hawaii Volcanoes is a great spot to road-trip with your pup as your copilot. All paved roads, pullouts, and parking areas are dog friendly, so you can explore Crater Rim Drive and most of Chain of Craters Road relatively unhindered. Pets can also hike up Mauna Loa Road and hang out in Namakanipaio Campground.

55.   Haleakala National Park   , Hawaii

At Haleakala, dogs are not permitted on trails, but you can bring them to paved parking lots and drive-up campgrounds and walk them along paved pathways. This means that you and Fluffy can enjoy some seriously sweeping crater views at the Kalahaku Overlook and take in that famous sunrise glow from the volcano’s summit.

56. Arches National Park, Utah

The pet policy at Arches is strict. Leashed pets are allowed on all park roads (both paved and unpaved), at picnic areas, and in the Devils Garden Campground, but that’s it. No pets are permitted on trails or at any overlooks. Boarding is available in nearby Moab  if you’re interested in taking a trail adventure.

pet on tours

57. Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Similar to Arches, the pet policy at Canyonlands is quite stringent. Leashed dogs are welcome in both the Willow Flat and Squaw Flat Campgrounds, as well as on paved scenic drives and in parking lots. Pets are not allowed (not even in your vehicle) on any backcountry roads, trails, or on the river. People looking to exercise their dogs may do so on Potash and Shafer Canyon Roads between Moab and Island in the Sky. Boarding is available in Moab, should you want to go on a bigger adventure in the park.

58. Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska

In this southern Alaska park, you’re unable to bring Fido on any park trails, but you may walk the road to Exit Glacier and around the Nature Center parking lot. Pets can frolic in the park’s backcountry, but not on the coast from the mean high-tide line to a quarter-mile inland.

59. Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida

If you’ve got a private charter or a permitted tour guide who’ll bring them, your pets are welcome to camp and hang out with you on Garden Key. However, they may not enter Fort Jefferson. Be aware that neither the commercial ferry nor seaplane will take your pet to the island, so plan accordingly.

60. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Glacier Bay is not a pet-friendly park . Leashed pets are only allowed within 100 feet of the developed areas of Bartlett Cove and on the public-use dock. They may also stroll the beach between the Bartlett Cove Public Use Dock and the National Park Service Administrative Dock or sit aboard a private vessel in the water and watch those icy blue glaciers pass by.

61. National Park of American Samoa, American Samoa

If you wish to bring your dog  to this park, they essentially have to stay inside your vehicle, except for quick pee breaks on roadsides. At the National Park of American Samoa, pets must stay out of public buildings and off of swimming beaches and trails.

62. + 63. (tie) Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, and Channel Islands National Park, California

Both of these island-based parks do not allow pets of any kind , including aboard vessels in the water near the islands themselves. However, if you complete the necessary paperwork, service dogs can come into both parks. Check the parks’ websites for details.

20 Top Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations for You and Your Best Travel Buddy

Calling everyone who can't bear the thought of not being with your dog for more than 24 hours... here's the perfect guide to exploring the world with your furry companion.

  • Choosing a Destination
  • International

It was mid-2008 when Amy Burkert and her husband Rod found themselves adopting a stray German shepherd . The puppy was found near their home in Philadelphia, and after a few weeks of looking for his family to no avail, they decided to adopt him as their own and name him Buster. The issue? The couple, who at the time had a small dog named Ty, was planning a huge trip up to Canada about a month later and hadn't accounted for two dogs coming along.

Burkert searched online for dog-friendly hotels and dog parks along their route but didn't come up with much. The trip went well, but the experience taught her that other people probably were also looking for the same information.

In 2009, she launched GoPetFriendly.com , a comprehensive pet travel platform that quickly took off. Soon after, she and Rod, both who work remotely for their CPA firm, sold their place in Philly, hit the road in an RV, and haven't looked back since.

"In a few months, we will have been on the road for 11 years," Burkert says, adding that Ty and Buster have sadly passed, and they now have a new pup named Myles. "We love it, and by doing that with our dogs, we are walking the talk."

Since we're all attached to our dogs at the hip, here are some of Burkert's recommendations for how you can bring them along for a vacation.

How to Choose a Dog-Friendly Vacation Destination

Consider your itinerary.

There are many things to consider when traveling with your dog , from where you'll go to how you'll get there to fun activities to do along the way. While in the decision-making phase, Burkert recommends thinking about what you and your dog like to do together first.

"Do you like to go to the beach?" she asks. "What about hiking? Exploring cities? Or sitting at a coffee shop watching people walk by? It's important to think about how much your dog physically can and would want to do and what you'd want to do together."

And be prepared to make a few sacrifices for your four-legged companion. Dog-friendly vacation spots can come in various forms. Taking a road trip with your dog to New York City, for example, may not seem like a good spot because of the population density, but there are actually tons of great green spaces for your dog to play.

"That said, you might consider sacrificing your trip to the Guggenheim if you're with your dog," she says.

Think About Where You'll Stay

Your choice of accommodations is another important thing to keep in mind when planning your trip. While some locations have hotels that allow pets , other destinations with more natural surroundings might require flexible arrangements like renting a unique Airbnb or camping.

"A lot of people think that camping is a wonderful thing to do with a dog on vacation, but not if you're planning on leaving him or her in the camper all day," Burkert says. "That isn't much of a vacation for your pet. Instead, try to find a place that will work for you both."

As you decide the best vacation destination for your family (fur babies included), these Burkert-recommended places both domestic and international might just do the trick.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the East Coast

Eastern vermont.

Among the places on the East Coast to take your dog on vacation, a place called Dog Mountain in the Eastern Vermont town of St. Johnsbury ranks highly for Burkert.

"The people managing it have turned what was a dairy farm into an off-leash dog heaven," she says. "There is a pond, trails, even a dog chapel."

Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania

The town of Jim Thorpe , Pennsylvania, is home to the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway , which offers breathtaking trips through the Pocono Mountains. According to Burkert , the trip is a must for dog owners and is among the best dog-friendly vacation spots in the eastern U.S.

Bar Harbor, Maine

The 5,500-person town of Bar Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island is a great place to bring your pet companion, especially if you're interested in hiking at Acadia National Park . This island is the best of both worlds with mountains and sandy beaches within the park, and pet-friendly patios for eating in town. Doggie visitors are encouraged and there are tons of trails both you and your pup will enjoy.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations on the West Coast

Bend, oregon.

The 100,000-person town in central Oregon is so obsessed with dogs that they are allowed almost everywhere. Dog-friendly hiking trails are abundant at the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range, and within the city limits, you'll find many outdoor food carts , food truck parks, and breweries (including the award-winning Deschutes Brewery ), all of which welcome dogs.

San Diego, California

Sunny San Diego is among one of the best dog-friendly vacation spots thanks to its many open areas that accommodate them. If your pup likes to play on the beach, there are plenty of dog beaches and off-leash dog parks in and around this SoCal city. Check out Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, or Morley Field Dog Park in San Diego's famed Balboa Park .

If you're a lover of the sea, take advantage of SD's coastal location and rent a boat or a yacht to let your dog feel the wind in her hair. If you're looking for an activity that will satisfy your pup's competitive nature, catch a Padres baseball game at Petco Park where they have a special viewing area called The Barkyard just for people and their pets.

Northern Arizona

Many people are surprised to learn that Grand Canyon National Park , located in Northern Arizona, is a vacation spot that allows dogs. As Burkert explains , the South Rim is your best bet if you're bringing your furry friend.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Midwest

Chicago, illinois.

"I love going to Chicago with dogs ," says Burkert. She suggests checking out the trails along Lake Michigan and exploring Navy Pier, as just a few examples of things to do.

When you get hungry, grab a slice on the patio with your pup at Paradise Park or a pint at Empirical Brewery , which is also home to a colony of beloved brewery cats .

Grand Haven, Michigan

Grand Haven is a picturesque town on Michigan's West Coast loved by tourists and their dog companions alike, mainly for the number of greenspaces and beaches. Grand Haven City Beach is a great place to go with your pup on a warm summer day. The vacation town even boasts the Must Love Dogs Boutique & Spa , a pet-friendly shopping spot where you can bring your pup to sniff around the store.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis is filled with great places to take your dog on vacation, including breweries, outdoor restaurants, and open spaces like White River State Park . The city's growing number of outdoor dining spots that allow dogs makes Indy a no-brainer for foodies bringing along their fur babies.

Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in the Southern U.S.

Asheville, north carolina.

The sprawling Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., allows dogs on its grounds and outdoor patios (but not inside buildings). Still, at more than 8,000 acres to explore, it's absolutely worth bringing along the pooch, especially on a beautiful day. Once you've gotten your steps in stomping around the mansion gardens, the nearby town of Asheville has a ton of pet-friendly activities for the two of you to take on, as well. Check out the street art in downtown Asheville, or sniff out some local goodies at one of the town's many bustling outdoor farmer's markets. After you've gotten your fix of city life, head out to explore the miles of trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains and book a camping spot for your and your furry friend to soak in the sounds of nature.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is one of the most dog-friendly U.S. cities on our list, featuring many pets-allowed restaurants like Brown Dog Deli and Poogan's Porch , named after the friendly neighborhood dog who greeted guests until he passed in 1979.

If your dog wants to live like a princess for a day, Charleston Carriage Works offers historical tours of the city and allows dogs to come along for the ride in style. When you're ready to stretch your legs, check out Charleston's beaches at Sullivan's Island and Morris Island . If the weather isn't favorable, take your dog for a dip in the indoor dog pool at Wag-n-Splash .

Sarasota, Florida

Brohard Beach and Paw Park is among the top places to go in Sarasota if you have a pup in tow. The beach is especially accommodating for pet parents with its dog showers and fire hydrants for puppy bathroom breaks, according to Burkert.

International Dog-Friendly Vacation Ideas

Before you head out on an international adventure with your favorite travel buddy, keep in mind that there can be potential health risks when taking your dog on long flights . It may make more sense to explore the spots where you can safely bring your dog along in the car on a road trip, or even via train travel , before booking a trip to one of these pet-friendly international cities. As always, it's best to talk with your veterinarian about whether it's safe for your dog to accompany you on long flights or to visit other countries. Your vet will help you understand the risks and what you need to know before your pup gets a new passport stamp.

Venice, Italy

While may not be many sprawling greenspaces in Venice, dogs are still welcome in the charming Italian city limits. Pups are allowed in many water boats and are able to stroll the street with you. Just be aware that sometimes the small alleyways can be crushingly busy, so it's best to go in the off-season in November–March so your pup's not overwhelmed with the crowds.

Tokyo, Japan

Japan celebrates six native dog breeds , called the Nihon Ken, which have been designated as national monuments. So as you can imagine, the country is incredibly dog-friendly . Dogs are allowed in hotels, stores, and some restaurants, and there are tons of dog parks for them to run in cities like Tokyo. Some of the best of the capital city include Yoyogi Park Dog Run , Honmoku Sancho Park , and Ueno Park .

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Recognized as one of North America's most dog-friendly cities, Vancouver is well-known as a great destination for dogs and their human counterparts looking for an adventure. While here, make a stop at any (or all!) of the great beaches or off-leash parks throughout the city, and don't miss a day playing at the world-renowned Stanley Park and Arboretum.

When you get hungry, take an afternoon stroll through the Mainstreet Station Farmer's Market on Wednesdays in the summer months. Or explore all that Granville Island public market has to offer, from food to art to some pretty cool historical architecture, any day of the week. Outside of the city limits, Vancouver also has a lot to offer nature lovers, including some of the best hiking you'll ever do in every season.

If your dog isn't used to traveling, you'll want to do some advance prepping. If you are taking a road trip, one top tip is to make sure your dog is comfortable riding in the car for longer periods of time.

If your doggo gets car sick, for instance, put him in a plastic crate with solid walls so he can't look out the car windows. Also, avoid feeding your dog before a long car ride if car sickness is an issue. You can also ask your vet about medication to help with motion sickness.

Before arriving at a hotel, check its policies regarding pets. Many hotels charge pet fees, but some, like the Kimpton brand, do not. Also, check the resort's policy on leaving dogs unattended in the room.

Another tip is to bring some favorite toys to keep your pup entertained if you are heading out to dinner without him. And, always make sure your dog is wearing a collar with a tag that identifies her by name and lists your contact info.

Flying with pets? Here's what to know.

By Anne Marie Lee

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 6, 2024 / 10:08 AM EDT / CBS News

Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing.

Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.

For example, American Airlines  recently revised its policies  so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.

Cargo, check-in or carry-on?

Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions.

Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo.

A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. (You can learn more about the differences between cargo, check-in and carry-on options  here , including warnings about the  dangers  involved when pets travel in the cargo hold.)

Carry-on pets

Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.

"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was being fostered by a friend after being found as a stray puppy in 2021.

In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum.

image000000-1.jpg

Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced.

"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."

Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it."

Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.

"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.

Safety and comfort

For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety.

"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.

Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation  and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.

Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024.  In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website.

On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which she said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours.

"I'm not sure how I'd handle a flight to Singapore," Rauch said.

Here's a rundown of U.S. airlines' pet travel policies, along with fees and and restrictions:

Alaska Airlines

Pet fee: $100

Pets allowed: Dogs and cats are the only pets allowed in-cabin on international trips and flights to Hawaii. Domesticated rabbits and small household birds are allowed as carry-on on domestic flights.

Use the Potions You Craft in Alchemist: The Potion Monger

Hello soon to be Alchemists,

I’m Mateusz, Game Designer of Alchemist: The Potion Monger , here to c onvince you to buy property surrounded by gigantic vines (a small annoyance) on a faraway island .

This fresh opportunity is now available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners!

APM screenshot

Purchase Agreement Includes:

  • Solving puzzles to brew potions and using them during RPG adventures.
  • Furnishing and decorating your newly bought property.
  • Adopting alchemical pets (and petting them!).
  • And much more…

Interested?

Feel welcome to the world of Alchemist: The Potion Monger , full of anthropomorphic animals! Let me be your guide.

Potion Brewing

APM cauldron

Alchemy is the key aspect of the game (as you surely expected from the title called Alchemist: The Potion Monger ).

Every potion recipe is based on Aspects – reflections of emotions, forces of nature, and ideas. Aspects are divided into four Elements:

  • Earth – the backbone of many brews, such as Healing Potions, Poisons, Resurrection Potions, and many more!
  • Air – a huge part in Speed Potions, Jump Potions, Perfumes, and all kinds of mind-boosting brews.
  • Fire – can set fires (what a surprise), explode, cause aggression, or spread love.
  • Water – creates brews such as Cleaning Potions, Quick Reflexes Potions, Ice Potions, etc.

APM screenshot

Creating a potion is no easy task and every brew is a Puzzle to solve. How you solve them will depend on the ingredients and alchemical tools you have available. Use various alchemical and other (demonic altars, holy waters, and more) tools to process the ingredients. Then put them into the cauldron and start brewing!

Using your Brews

This is a unique aspect among the alchemist simulators available on the market. After creating potions venture outside your home and influence the world with their help! Possibilities are plenty:

  • Help the farmer grow plants

APM screenshot

  • Or„ “Grow” the farmer!

APM frmer

  • Make a fireworks show for the townsfolk

APM fireworks

  • Or freeze them with the bottled snowstorm!

APM screenshot

  • Turn the townsfolk into sheep and adopt them

APM screenshot

  • Or burn them to the glory of the oinking pig god!

APM exterior

Design your Home/Lab

… and make it truly your own! – Alchemist: The Potion Monger will allow a lot of customization in designing your home and yard.

APM dog

When you first arrive at the Island as an alchemist apprentice, you’ll have an empty home, a sleeping bag, and only some basic alchemical tools with you. Slowly you’ll be able to fill the empty space with furniture, trophies (from slain bosses), advanced tools, and some other weird stuff.

APM screenshot

Acquire blueprints from the market, find them in the world, or receive them as a quest reward, and make your – empty at-first – home a true mansion of the wealthy alchemist!

To learn alchemy you’ll surely need some help, luckily you’re not alone.

You’ll arrive on the island with yourtrusty Shiba (you’ll be able to name him/her as you wish). He/she is very special. He/she is the best boy/girl!

APM dog facing

Actually, there is one more thing that makes him/her special -the ability to discover the Earth’s element Aspects. With time you’ll be able to let more special animals join your party! Every element (Earth, Air, Fire, and Water) has its own corresponding pet for you to find and tame.

Potion Trading

Everybody has to eat, and is there any better way to make your coin than to sell magical potions to those in need?

APM street

Start with working for the middleman and fulfill potion contracts to earn Gold and Reputation. Receive bonuses for better-quality brews, and slowly grow topurchase your own market stall!

APM screenshot

Every sold Potion will award you with:

  • Gold- a basic resource on the Island, thanks to it you’ll be able to buy Ingredients, Blueprints, Home Upgrades, Potion Recipes, Skill Books, Tools, and more. However, there are some things gold cannot buy…
  • Reputation- You arrive on the Island as a nobody and have to slowly gain trust and renown. Do various quests for the Islanders, complete potion contracts, and participate in various events to grow your reputation. A higher reputation will unlock new goods in stores, more quests, more lucrative potion contracts, and progress in the story.

During your alchemist career, your character will develop in various ways. However, there is no ordinary leveling-up system, instead, you’ll be able to get/find/purchase ability scrolls. When you acquire them, the task for the respective skill will be unlocked (e.g. have four potion effects on yourself at once – Slower Metabolism), and when you finish it, you’ll gain a new ability.

APM abilities

Abilities take the form of Merit Badges for you to collect and store in the Almanac, here are some of them:

  • Pro Milker – Milking the cow will give you two times the milk.
  • Farmer – Planted seeds grow faster.
  • Toxic Botanist – Allow to pick up toxic plants without hurting yourself.
  • Rascal – Acquire more gold when knocking out characters.

That’s not all that will await you on the Island when you get there, but I’ll let you discover the rest for yourself.

Happy brewing!

There’s nothing better than putting a little howl into your Halloween celebration. And taking your pup on a pet friendly ghost tour is a fiendishly perfect way to celebrate the holiday!

Smiling black dog in purple witch's hat

Taking a pet friendly ghost tour is a popular activity around Halloween. But these tours are a fun way to learning the history of some of America’s oldest cities any time of the year!

Pet Friendly Ghost Tours for Howl-o-ween | GoPetFriendly.com

Take A Pet Friendly Ghost Tour

When looking for a pet friendly ghost tour, focus on walking tours conducted exclusively outdoors. These tours are more likely to welcome your furry partner in crime.

There are some tour operators who believe dogs are especially sensitive to the paranormal and will make special accommodations for them. If you find a tour you really want to take, and it involves going inside building or riding on a bus, ask if they’ll allow you to bring your pet in a carrier or stroller.

Naturally, October is a very popular month to take a pet friendly ghost tour. Expect to book your place in advance, because few tour operators allow walk-ins. (Those that do are noted below.)

Check the company’s website carefully for information on how to make reservations and where to join the tour. Keep in mind that many tour companies offer non-spooky tours as well, if you have small kids or scaredy cats.

Huntsville –  Huntsville Ghost Walk

These seasonal ghost walks happen every Friday and Saturday night in September and October. You can choose one of three guided tours through the Twickenham District, the Old Town District, or the Downtown District and leashed dogs are welcome on the walking tours.

Bisbee –  Old Bisbee Ghost Tour

The Old Bisbee Ghost Tour happens 7 nights a week between October and May and 5 nights a week between June and September. The ghost tour is pet friendly, as long as pets are well-behaved and can be carried or are leashed for the duration of the tour. (Only service animals are permitted to join the Ghost Hunts or Haunted Pub Crawls.)

Stand-up comedian, actor, writer, producer and acclaimed "Saturday Night Live" alum Pete Davidson will bring his “Prehab Tour” to The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts at 7 p.m. June 19.

Davidson joined NBC's "Saturday Night Live" in 2014 as one of the youngest cast members ever at the weekly show. While on "SNL" from 2014 to 2022 his singular Weekend Update features and original music videos garnered millions of views. He recently returned to Studio 8H to host the 49th season premiere of “SNL,” earning rave reviews.

Among his numerous other projects, he shot his first one-hour stand-up special for Comedy Central in 2016, and in 2020 released the stand-up special “Pete Davidson: Alive From New York.” In 2023, Davidson starred in Peacock’s “Bupkis,” a semi-autobiographical comedy series he also co-created, co-wrote and executive produced. He will begin production on season two later this year. Earlier this year he released his new Netflix Standup Special “Pete Davidson: Turbo Fonzarelli."

Davidson, who has dated celebrities such as Ariana Grade, Kim Kardashian and Emily Ratajkowski, announced last year that he had been in rehab.

He won't be just phoning it in for the "Prehab Tour." The Hanover Theatre's website states, "This event will be a phone-free experience. Use of phones, smart watches and accessories, will not be permitted in the performance space."

Tickets for the Pete Davidson "Rehab Tour" will go on sale to Hanover Theatre members at 10 a.m. Wednesday and to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday. Tickets are $54.50 to $94.50 depending on seat location. For more information, call (877) 571-7469 or visit thehanovertheatre.org .
