I bought a "Safari" brand safe 4.5 years ago. This safe is made by the Cannon safe company. Unit has an electronic lock that has functioned without problems in the past.

This morning tried to open it and got a low battery signal. Funny I replaced batteries with new Duracells about 6 months ago. They provide an external battery device so I can supply current to the lock from the exterior of the safe to open when the batteries are dead. Tried this and the safe still did not open. Got out the instructions and called customer service ( Cannon Safe) They said too bad sucks to be you (not their words, mine). They no longer have parts for this safe and they do not stock the override key. He said that is is the only safe that they no longer have parts or service for. He said to call a lock smith and have he cut the safe open. I registered the safe when I purchased it. They said that the key was not sent with the safe and was a special order as needed and that as long as I have the external battery supply I should be set.

Learned some lessons,

1. Stick with a good dial lock as they are less prone to failure and wear

2. When Cannon drops a safe they do not notice owners

3. It is expensive to have a lock smith open a safe that has failed

4. Never had issues with my older safe made by other companies ( they have dial locks)

5. Replacement safe will not be a cannon

just my experience and thoughts

I also have a Cannon safe with electronic locks. Found out the hard way that Durecel batteries tend to corrod the wires. Switched to everready. Even though it solved my problem, the damage is done and I have to now change batteries every two weeks. Samething happened to my thermostat for the house. Durecell corroded the wires. Cost me $165 to replace. It came with durecel, switched immediately to everready

Have you gotten your safe open yet?

My brother had the same problem, and couldn't find the override key. I have dials on my safes, they always work and never go dead. What is the advantage of an electronic lock anyway, faster access? I'm not in that much of a hurry.

My first gun safe was a Liberty Fat Boy with an electronic lock. Went to retrieve guns for a CAS monthly match, but it would not open. Tried a new and a different brand of battery, but no luck. Called Liberty and they said to call a specific independent lock/safesmith in my general area, and don't worry, they would pay for his services. Took him about 2 1/2 hours to drill and open the safe. I inquired, and he said his bill private pay would have been about $400. He also said electronic locks fail on an average of 5 years, and warranty work on them helped keep him in business. He also said a dial lock might last 100 years. Part of his business is replacing new mechanical dial locks at customer request with more modern electronic locks, so he had a few with him and he installed one of those. That gun safe takes me less than one minute extra to open, and has been operating flawlessly since. My second Liberty Fat Boy has an electronic lock, simply because I haven't called him to take off the electronic and install a dial lock. Based on my experience, Liberty does seem to have a good warranty. I also have a 100 year old floor safe that belonged to my wife's grandfather. That dial lock still works fine. When I finish my walk in vault, it's going to have a dial lock. Your mileage may vary.

I was having problems with digital cameras.

The battery was always dead.

So one day I stopped and bought a battery tester.

It isn't much advantage to replace a battery with a half charge battery.

They all look the same.

I have found batteries corroded IN THE WRAPPER.

Duracell DID replace my lectrical earmuffs.

GET A TESTER.

I learned my lesson about electronic locks on a cheap Stack-on safe. That electronic lock was terrible, it was actually quicker to just always use the override key. My current safe is a BF Amsec with a group II combination lock.

Coyote Kincaid

I have three Cannon safes. First one is a dial and when you bring it back to 0 you have to hit it to get everything to fall into place. Second one is digital and haven't had a lick of problems. My third one is digital and it kept draining the battery and locking me out after only owning it for a week. Like you, I couldn't get my ammo out for a match the next day. Sent an email to the President of Cannon and I got a phone call within an hour from a service rep. Got my safe open and sent me a new lock. Haven't had any problems since and that was last year I believe.

My Cannon I bought last year has been doing strange things recently. I was sitting in my Man-Cave and I heard it unlock itself with nobody around. The last couple of times I tried to open it, had to enter the code 4 or 5 times and it seemed it I entered it fast, it would work but not if I entered it slow. I guess I had best call them before I get locked out.

Big Box Residential security containers cut expenses by using cheap parts The lock is one of the easiest places to cut corners that is hard for the purchaser to notice.

If it has an electronic lock that is not at least UL group II certified it is not worth having. Even then the rating only covers its resistance to compromise not reliability. IMHO when it comes to electronic locks you are operating on borrowed time.

I still don't understand the purpose of a combination lock that can be bypassed with a key.

Mechanical locks should have the same UL Group II rating at a minimum. S&G dial locks have an excellent reputation. Look at your lock and google the manufacturer. If they are less than 100% reputable have it replaced ASAP while it still works.

Dial locks can outlast you but they need a little TLC to do so. So avoid rapidly spinning the dial. This places excessive strain on the mechanics of the lock and can lead to premature failure. The dial should always be turned in a slow and deliberate manner.

My Safe Won’t Open: Five Things to Try

One of the most common troubleshooting calls we receive is:

“My safe won’t open. What do I do?”

Here are five common reasons why your safe won’t open, and what steps you should try before you call a technician.

Five Possible Reasons Your Safe Won’t Open

Dead batteries.

Fingers crossed, the reason your safe won’t open is as simple as dead batteries.

Before you try anything, change the batteries using brand name batteries. Off brand batteries lose power much faster than their brand-name counterparts.

It is important to try this step first, even if your keypad beeps and lights up as normal. There may be enough power in the batteries to operate the keypad, but not enough to completely retract the boltwork .

Jammed Bolt Work

At times, the bolt work can get jammed for a wide variety of reasons. If you hear the motor trying to retract the bolt work, but the safe won’t open, a jam could be the culprit.

It’s time to unleash your inner-frustrations; you get to mule kick the safe. Turn your back to the safe, and kick the door, hard, a few times. Be sure that you do not kick the keypad or the handle. This will help loosen the bolt work.

Next, pull the handle in the opposite direction than you normally do and enter the code. This will release some of the extra pressure on the bolt and should help the handle move more freely.

Lockout Mode or Time Delay

Many safes  go into penalty lockout mode if too many wrong codes are entered. Depending on the type of keypad, it typically emits a rapid series of beeps. If this happens, wait 10 to 20 minutes, and try again.

Your safe also may have a time delay . If this is the case, you will need to wait for the specified time delay period (typically 10 minutes) and re-enter your code.

Deactivated Code

Another possible reason your safe won’t open is your code has been deactivated. Have someone else try their code to see if theirs works.

Disconnected and/or Damaged Wiring

As with any electronic device, wiring can get disconnected and/or damaged. Remove the keypad and inspect the wires to see if they have come loose, are kinked, or cut.

If everything is intact, disconnect the wire from the keypad, and remove the batteries. Wait at least 20 seconds, then reinstall the batteries and reconnect the wiring.

If wiring is damaged or cut, you will need to call a technician. Be sure to tell them the type of keypad you have installed so they can bring one when they come.

If you try all of these steps and your safe still won’t open, it’s time to call a technician. If you have any questions, let us know . We’re happy to help!

Hi there, I’m having a problem opening my safe with a LA Gard keypad. Ever since I bought it, it has its moments that it don’t want to cooperate for a day or two..but now it just won’t open.please help as I have money, things for a case in court that is coming up and without them things I dont have a case. What am I doing wrong?(323)253-8045 willie

Hi, Willie. Your best bet is to go to http://www.findalocksmith.com or http://www.savta.org to find a reputable locksmith/safe technician to help you. They’ll charge you and you will have to provide proof of residence for where the safe is located, but they’ll be able to help get the safe open.

I have a lagard lock on me gun safe. I changed my code. Worked fine for a day. My code consisted with of the 1 thru 6. Next day I put in the code and didn’t hear any beep as I pushed the numbers. If I push 7 thru 9 I hear a beep. Need your help please. Thanks

hi bobby i have the same thing all i do is discontect the battery push the key pads and then connect the battery again and at works but i am get fed up with doing that

Where is the battery located?

Please help just bought a safe ( RedHead ) I have the comb but cannot get it to open

Steve, If it has a mechanical lock (No buttons or keypad but has a mechanical 100 number dial) on it turn the dial five complete rotations in either direction. Next, turn the dial counterclockwise (left) three revolutions and stop with the first number comes to the index mark on the fourth rotation. Turn the dial clockwise (right) passing the second number twice and stop when it comes to the index mark on the third revolution. Turn the dial counterclockwise (left) passing the third number once and stop when it comes to the index mark on the second revolution. Now turn the dial clockwise (right) and the dial should come to a dead stop. you should then be able to turn the handle of your safe and open your door.

You may need to do these steps a few times before you get it. Make sure that each time you align the number with the index mark (at 12 o’clock on the dial ring) that you do it precisely, so you are dialing the number exactly.

For example if your safe combination was 25, 45, 65, you would need to dial these exactly. If you dial 23, 42, 63, it will likely not open as the internal components are not aligned properly.

If you have an electronic lock, try replacing the battery with a brand new Duracell battery and try again.

You may need to contact the manufacturer if these procedures don’t get you your desired results.

Thank you for your comment.

Hi, I have a dominator ground safe operated with a key which I have not opened in over one year. Now I kneed access to important documents and the key won’t turn the lock. Please advise.

I suggest contacting the manufacturer of your safe to see if there is a manufacturer approved troubleshooting document available or if your safe is still under warranty. It may be that there is debris in your lock and could be as simple as vacuuming the keyway out to clean out debris. If there is a lock failure, you will need to locate a reputable safe technician in your area. Safe technicians can be found searched for at http://www.savta.org , http://www.findalocksmith.com , or http://www.clearstar.com

All the best to you.

I own a protector gun safe and the batteries are to low to open the door. I tried my key and it will not turn and I broke the key tab off. I can remove the broken piece. What do I do now?

Richard, I suggest contacting a local reputable safe technician in your area to help you with your problem. You can do so by checking http://www.findalocksmith.com or http://www.savta.org and using their search tools, should be able to find someone near you able to help.

Hi, I need to change the batteries of our safe, but I cannot remove them by opening the keypad. Seems they need to be replaced from inside the door.It is a Fier Fyter from Costco. Should I call a technician or is there an easier solution? Thanks for your help! Elsa

Elsa, I would suggest contacting COSTCO and see if there is a warranty or if they have the contact information for the manufacturer. You may also want to go to http://www.findalocksmith.com or http://www.savta.org and using their search tools, should be able to find someone near you able to help.

We have a 2007 redhead cabinet with combination but lost the combination and cannot open the cabinetc. How can we reset this before calling a locksmith?

Melissa, I would suggest contacting the company you bought it from. “Redhead” has been used by a couple of manufacturers as names for certain lines of safes. The company you purchased it from should be able to help you locate a number to contact the manufacturer. If this doesn’t work, I suggest going to http://www.findalocksmith.com or http://www.savta.org to locate a reputable safe technician in your area to remedy your safe issue.

We have a 2007 redhead cabinet with combination but lost the combination and cannot open the cabinet. How can we reset this before calling a locksmith?

How do u reserved the combination on a 2007 redhead gun cabinet

Very good. After an evening of total grrrr frustration, I came across this site on google. You saved the day. The 24/7 phone number on the safe was useless as I called a few times with no answer (musta been on a p@#$ break). Anyway, even though the battery worked, lights worked and the beeps worked…. as you stated, the battery did not have enough “juice” to completely retract the boltwork. A quick trip to the drug store, a new battery and everyone’s happy again. ^5

We love hearing stories like this! Glad we could help!

I just bought a 24 gun stack on safe. Got home and the code I put in worked every time now 2 days later I pressed the keypad and makes no beep and when I press one number from my code such as 0 it beeps and when I finish the code, the yellow light flashes 3 times. I can still get in the safe with the back up key but it’s frustrating that 600 safe keypad won’t work when it did yesterday and the day before with no issues! Their customer support is closed till Monday. I disconnected everything and when I plug it back in it just beeps and does nothing on the keypad and just put in a energizer battery brand new!

Hi I just bought the same safe you havr and having the same problem as you. Have you figured it out yet? Any help will be appreciated.

I called stack on customer service and they walked me through the problem. The black piece on the motherboard was loose which causes only one Or two buttons to work. They sent me all new parts for free and works perfect. I would just call them and they will help u out.

Thanks alot. I lef it alone awhile after messing with the wires and it wasnt doing anything and went back about an hour later now its fine. I guess it was a loose connection and it needed time to reset lol. Glad it also came with keys.

We put the five number code in but the handle doesn’t go all the way down

Handle won’t push down all the way

Hi I have a safe that uses the lg basic 3710. The keypad has stopped working and the safe is locked. There is no power going to the key pad even though I’ve replace the 9V battery with a new one. The supplier is charging me more than the cost of a new safe to get access to my contents (I feel as if I’m held to ransom). Can I peel off the existing keypad and replace it with a new electronic Lagard keypad, get the safe door opened, get access to my contents and have a working safe? Thanks

Does it not come with a back up key? Also I wouldn’t go through the company unless your motherboard is defected and they send u another one like I got when mine quick working. I got it for free. But you should’ve gotten a back up key if it’s electronic

Also, there is a motherboard inside the safe so u would have to open the safe to even get to the motherboard. Check all the connections and pull out the ribbon from the key pad from the circuit board and then plug it back in. Usually comes loose

Hi Brandon Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately the safe has no key hole … it cannot be opened by a key. The only access is through the keypad. Considering that I’ve had the safe for 15 year I think the circuitry has died (even though you would expect a commercial quality safe would last a lot longer). I was only wondering that, if I did peel away the keypad, removed the ribbon cable (I think the circuitry is within the keypad) and reconnect it to a newer model keypad (such as the Lagard LG Basic II) that maybe I can unlock the safe and, not only get access to my contents, but at the same time have a secure safe again. I’m only asking for advice before I attempt anything ….. Thanks

To be honest I couldn’t tell u. But I know there is a motherboard and a circuit board and one is inside the safe by the locking mechanism

Thanks Brandon. I’ll do some more research before I make a final decision.

i am have the same problem. it is a cannon safari safe.. no key!

Call the company is the best option you have and have then figure it out. Always try the battery and unplug what u can and reset it. If not call the company and they could either send somebody to help u out or even send u new parts to get in the safe

I’m a safe technician in Southern California, I specialize in troubleshooting service and repair of gun safes, money safes, inventory safe, utility safe and have a variety of locks, keypad and or complete lock kits at a very affordable price if interested please contact me at [email protected]

I have an problem in keep safe …That is ….When I entered password after that it’s shows me timers again again …What should I do….Plzz help me

Make sure that your battery terminals aren’t corroded because that’s what was wrong with mine. As soon as I cleaned up the terminals it worked

I have an amsec esl5 electronic lock on a tactical gun safe that drains a 9V battery in 3 days. At this point the lock won’t open even with a fresh battery it beeps four times when I enter the correct code or the default code. What are my options?

We have a challenger tall gun safe. The code is beeping but when it comes to turn the bolt to open it it will not move… It usually makes a noise after code of it moving the bolts to open it is no longer doing that… Help please

I have a Patriot safe that I bought from a guy that buys Estate sales. He did not have the keys nor the numbers for the key pad.so I got it for a great price. Well after getting it home I find out Patriot Safes are out of buisness now. What do I do?

I had (note, had) an OA3810 SentrySafe. It wouldn’t open either. First I removed the 4 AA batteries, put in fresh ones. Nope. I installed a 9v. Nope The solenoid on the OA3810 is apparently on the upper right corner – getting physical. Tapping it with a mallet failed, beating it everywhere failed. So did the Rare Earth magnet I ordered, trying to get the solenoid to move. Nada. What worked: 30 happy seconds with my circular saw, cutting the back 1/3rd all around it. Then a bit of prying with my flat shovel, maybe 5 minutes, exposing the back wall of the inner plastic. The I carefully circular-sawed a square cut at the edges…got my stuff out.

I own a Sentry Model 1610 which I inherited. I have recently moved house and can’t open it. I have changed the batteries and they appear to be OK. I have used the original programmed numbers but to no avail. HELP

Thanks, you saved my life. I didn’t know that a simple battery change would solve my problem. I had luck to read your posting before contacting technicians which could have costed a lots.

My husband’s gun safe’s lock has broken, and I had no idea what to do. I don’t want the kids to get into it and hurt themselves, so I was glad to see your tips. I am especially glad for your last tip about disconnected and damaged wiring because I suspect that may be the problem. Now I just need a locksmith to fix it.

Cabela gun safe won’t open. Bought used over a year ago. From what I read sounds like I need to change battery. Multiple beeps sound and light flashes, but won’t open. I assume battery is on inside. What do I so

Information for Cannon Safe Owners with SecuRam Electronic Locks

' src=

By gguldens56

Folks, a few years back, I purchased a Safari by Cannon safe with a SecuRam electronic lock for my Son.  Fairly quickly he noticed that the safe was signaling that the battery needed to be changed much more frequently than my safe did.  This constant messing with the battery connector and the associated wires caused the tiny wires to fail, rendering the keypad useless.  I managed to repair all this the first time, and my Son attempted the second repair.  The second repair caused the keypad to quit working entirely even though I could verify with a DMM that we had the correct voltage at the solder points on the circuit board.  This was more than a bit disconcerting and became a real problem when the handle for the safe–which had been left in the open position–managed to get brushed and locked the safe with no way to get in.

Called Cannon who offered to send a new keypad and lock mechanism to us for free, but we had to pay a locksmith to drill the safe to get it open.  I asked if the SecuRam keypads were still available and was told by the support person that they were no longer available .  Like most people, when I heard that I concluded–wrongly I might add–that these components were no longer being manufactured.  So, I set out to search the Internet for anything names SecuRam.  Did I ever hit the mother lode!!!

Turns our that SecuRam electronic locks and keypads are very much still being made and the company’s web site is http://securamsys.com/ !   On their web site I found a variety of keypads and after some exploring, I found the specific keypad for my Son’s safe and ordered it.  They ship USPS Priority mail from California and I received it in about 3 days!  The new design on these keypads have a battery carrier that slides into and out of the keypad body in place of the old 9v battery connector and wires.  Once inserted, the 9V battery contacts are engaged by a couple of springs to energize the system, and this entire setup will take much longer to wear out than the old 9V battery connector with those tiny wires that tended to break after several battery changes!   KUDOS to Securamsys for taking a less desirable design and turning it into an incredible design!  After connecting the wire that exits the safe into the new keypad, inserting the battery, and entering the code the safe opened like it was supposed to!

My take away from this experience:

  • Cannon Safe seems to be more concerned about their views, policies, and procedures than they are about assisting their customers.  Seems like a good way to run off customers.  I will NEVER purchase another Cannon Safe EVER!
  • Cannon support DID offer to send me a new keypad and locking mechanism for free, but I had to find a locksmith and pay for him to drill the safe to install the new stuff.  Didn’t seem like a good deal then, and it certainly turned out to not be a good deal now!
  • Cannon Support repeatedly reminded me that if I chose any other path than the one they were offering me, I would void my warranty.  Well IF the new keypad ordered from http://securamsys.com had not worked, I would have been forced to get a locksmith to drill the safe, and at that point I would have had him install a dial combination lock and the Cannon warranty be damned!  I must comment here that having to pay to drill a safe so it can be opened seems like the “warranty” from Cannon is not what I would expect a warranty to be.  Besides, their warranty does not cover the contents of the safe and it seems that more holes in a safe would have the potential for more loss than the path I took.  The keypad worked and for ~$75.00 I got my Son’s safe working again!

The moral of this post is this:  If you are the sad owner of a Cannon Safari safe with a dead or broken SecuRam keypad, and an inside locking mechanism, You should visit the site   http://securamsys.com and look to see if your keypad is shown in their products section, that $75.00 expenditure may be all you need to get your safe working again!

What is Traditional Business Phone Service in Moscow, PA?

Traditional phone service companies transmit their signals through a PSTN. The PSTN uses circuit-switched telephony. It is based on copper wires carrying analog voice data. Telephone services that are facilitated by PSTN are often known as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) because it has been operational for more than 100 years. It was the first mode of a network to be used by telephone service providers. The PSTN also comprises of satellites, mobile networks, and cables.

The PSTN infrastructure is very large. Therefore, it is expensive to use PSTN telephone service than VoIP in Moscow, PA. Moreover, the PSTN network is old and often requires maintenance. The major setback of PSTN telephone services is that they have difficulties when sending data over long distances because they are analog.

When making long distance calls over the PSTN, the data has to stop at different destinations during its transmission. The data flow through the equipment owned by various companies as the call is in progress. Therefore, it makes the call cost per minute higher and expensive. The traditional phone service companies use a lot of infrastructures to carry, switch, and route the calls that are now digital. However, the connection between the local central office and the customer is still analog.

Traditional PBX

PBX With Analog Phone Systems in Moscow, PA

Most businesses in Moscow, PA will be using a PBX, which is known as a private branch exchange. The PBX effectively routes calls through their office. When a business phone service is used, the PBX is what allows businesses to use several different call features. Some common available features are voicemail, call forwarding, conference calls and extensions.

When used with a traditional PSTN phone system, the PBX can be located in a remote location or near the user. Regardless of where the PBX is located, the system comes with a major drawback, which is the significant cost. To set up a complete business phone system that uses a PBX, many different hardware components are needed, and a significant initial investment is needed to get started. In most cases, this system can cost at least $1,000 for the initial components, and it will require ongoing maintenance, configuration and installation.

For business owners in Moscow, PA who're planning to use a traditional PBX for their business phone service, it can cost a lot of money to expand or upgrade the system. Many of the newest PBX systems can only support a very limited number of lines, and if a business grows quickly, the PBX won't be able to provide the additional extensions needed to operate efficiently. The cost of adding new hardware to keep up with business growth can be too much for many business owners.

It's also important to remember that a PBX is like any other electronic hardware, and over time, it will suffer problems and begin to malfunction. The cost to repair problems with the PBX can be expensive, and depending on uncontrollable circumstances, a PBX might even become obsolete.
