Chrysler Voyager Not Changing Gear – What Could Be Wrong?

  • July 10, 2023
  • Voyager Maintenance/Troubleshooting

After making its debut in 2021, the Voyager is now the face of the Chrysler minivan. However, there have been some questions about the transmission not shifting into gear. What could cause this issue? Below we have listed out the possible culprits.

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Low fluid in the transmission
  • Low fluid in the master cylinder
  • Failed brake light switch
  • Bad sequencers
  • Failing transmission
  • Running out of battery
  • Bad shift solenoid

These issues might seem intimidating as you try to understand how to diagnose them yourself. That's why in this article, we will discuss each of these culprits and how to troubleshoot them. In addition, we will take a deeper dive into these transmission issues and how to solve them.

Chrysler Voyager Not Changing Gear - What Could Be Wrong?

The Chrysler Voyager is a rebranded version of the Dodge Grand Caravan that was discontinued in 2020. Chrysler reintroduced the minivan in 2021 after a six-year hiatus, touting it as "The Ultimate Cargo Van." The Chrysler Voyager was available for purchase at all Chrysler dealerships. However, minivans are only as good as they drive, so read on as we discuss possible reasons why your Voyager isn't shifting gears properly.

Low Fluid In The Transmission

When your car is not shifting gears properly, this could be due to low fluid level in the transmission. To determine whether or not you have low transmission fluid, check the dipstick. If it is below the minimum line, then this could be your issue. To fix this problem, you should top up the fluid to the required level. Check with your owner's manual for the recommended transmission fluid for your Voyager.

It is also important to use the best transmission fluid you can to help increase your vehicle's transmission life. Again, check your owner's manual for the recommended transmission fluid, or contact your local dealer for more information.

Low Fluid In The Master Cylinder

The master cylinder is responsible for shifting gears by transferring hydraulic force from the brake pedal to all other components in your Chrysler Voyager. To diagnose this issue, you will have to inspect the fluid level in your master cylinder while checking for any leaks in the brake lines attached to it. If the fluid is low or there are leaks, then this could be why your gearbox isn't shifting gears. Therefore, you should top off your fluid and replace the brake lines if necessary.

Failed Brake Light Switch

It may seem weird that a brake light switch would cause your Voyager not to be able to switch gears, but it could actually be the issue!

The brake light switch is responsible for changing gears. The brake light switch sends off the signal to shift when the brakes are engaged. If this signal fails, then your car will never shift into gear.

You should inspect this part by disconnecting it from the wire harness and using a multimeter to see any power on the 12V DC mode. If no voltage is present, then you should replace this part with a new one.

Bad Sequencers

For your car to switch gears, the gearbox requires information from the ECU or Engine Control Unit. This information includes vehicle speed and engine RPM, both of which have to be communicated for the gearbox to know how fast the vehicle is accelerating and what gears should be engaged.

If this connection is broken, then the Voyager will never shift into gear. Therefore, you need to check your wire harness for any loose connections or damaged wiring. In addition, you should inspect all solder joints on the ECU and Engine Control Unit connectors and check if the ECU and Engine Control Unit connector pins are corroded.

Failing Transmission

Hopefully, this isn't the reason, but a failing transmission is another reason your Voyager isn't shifting gears. If the gears aren't engaging properly it could be due to a faulty transmission.

To diagnose this issue, you should check for any leaks in the vehicle, noises that don't sound right, and excessive heat from the transmission. If you spot any of these issues, then it might be that your Chrysler Voyager needs a new transmission, and you should replace it with a refurbished one.

In addition to this, you should get a mechanic to inspect your transmission fluid, and test drive the car. A good mechanic will be able to tell if your Voyager needs a new transmission or not.

Running Out of Battery

Batteries provide power to the gearbox, so if your Voyager is not shifting gears, it could be due to a faulty battery. If the voltage is lower than 12V, this can cause problems with the gearbox, and you should replace your battery with a new one. You will have to disconnect and reconnect all terminals on the battery after you have replaced it with a new one.

In addition, you should check that all connections are tight and secure. You can do this by disconnecting and reconnecting them in the correct order, which will ensure that each wire is connected correctly.

Bad Shift Solenoid

If all of the above checks out, your Voyager might have a failing shift solenoid or solenoids. The shift solenoid controls the flow of transmission fluid, which allows gear changes to occur. If this component has failed, you should replace it with a new one, which should solve any issues about not shifting gears!

What are the signs of a bad shift solenoid?

The shift solenoid is responsible for the gear selection in your car. When it malfunctions, you will not be able to shift into gears properly, and you need to replace this part if you have any of these issues with your Voyager:

  • Erratic behavior when shifting gears.
  • Loud noises while changing gears.
  • The transmission fluid leaking (you will feel this while checking the fluid level in your master cylinder).
  • The gearbox overheating.

If you have any of these issues with your Voyager, you should replace your shift solenoid with a new one. You can get it replaced by a mechanic or directly buy the part yourself and fit it into your car.

Where is the shift solenoid located?

The shift solenoid is located on the left side of the gearbox. You will find it near the middle part of your transmission. It is quite big and is wrapped around with a layer of heat insulation. It would be best if you took out some bolts to access it and disconnect all wire connectors attached to it before removing them.

How do you reset your transmission?

To reset an automatic transmission, you will need a transmission scan tool. You can purchase these online or go to a local mechanic.

If this does not solve your problem with shifting gears, then you should take your car to the local Chrysler dealer, and a technician will inspect it in more detail and determine what is causing the issue so that they can fix it for you!

Will disconnecting the battery reset the transmission?

No, disconnecting the battery will not reset your transmission. You may have a faulty transmission or issues with one of the solenoids. You can follow the checklist about not shifting gears, which should help determine what is going on with your car.

Why is my reverse gear not working?

Without enough transmission fluid, the gears of your reverse gear might become overheated and malfunction. If this happens to you while driving forward, it would be difficult for you to move in a backward direction.

The car may not shift into reverse gear because there is a problem with the transmission position sensor. It is responsible for telling the car's computer where it is positioned, and if it malfunctions, you may not be able to select the reverse gear.

The worn-out valve body is also another common reason why the reverse gear is not working. Again, you can check this by inspecting the valve body and looking for any leaks inside or underneath the car.

A faulty shifter mechanism might also be the reason why your reverse gear is not working.

A fluid leak might also be the reason why your reverse gear is not working, so check all of your hoses for signs of leakage. A worn-out cable can also prevent you from shifting into reverse gear.

As you can see, there are many reasons why your reverse gear may not be working properly, and if it feels like it is over your head, then contact your local dealer to avoid causing further damage.

The Chrysler Voyager is a reliable and versatile vehicle that can get you where you need to go. If you are having trouble with the gear shifter, though, we recommend checking for leaks or noise before anything else. If your car still isn't shifting gears properly after trying all of these checks, then it may be due to one of the issues mentioned above, and this is something that your local mechanic can help with!

2002 chrysler minivan 60k, bump shift transmission

2002 voyager 60k, going 50-70 transmission drops into passing gear then back up. sometimes 3-4 times .last time got down to 25 mph and was continually shifting. stopped and got mechanic , drove it, did not do it again. on way home, started to do it, I gunned it to 90 and stopped doing it and was o.k. going home. computer says transmission in perfect shape. no engine light comes on. selenoid pak replaced, serviced transmission at chrysler dealership. HELP

Was this the first time the transmission was serviced? The general consensus is that automatic transmissions should have their fluid changed every 30k miles.

If this started after the fluid change then you can have the dealer flush the computer and that should fix it. Otherwise it should go away after a 1000 miles or so. If this is not related to fluid change then totally different story.

Sounds like one possibility is a failing throttle position sensor - or some aspect of its circuit.

Intermittent problems are just really hard to track down. You best bet is probably to have someone drive it around while on a scanner to see if data from one of these events can be logged.

Rough Downshifting

  • Add to quote

I've complained to my mechanic about my 2002 Dodge Caravan downshifting weird. It happend when I am slowing down to a stop. It feels like the vehicle is going through gears rather quickly and sometimes abruptly just before it stops. The vehicle is not pulling up any codes. Is this normal? If not what might be the possible cause. The vehicle has 110,000 kms. A tranmission fluid and filter change was done at 65,000 kms.

I too have recently noticed my 2001 GC downshifting at time when I am slowing down to a stop. Not every time. Don't remember this happening before. Checked the fluid (ATF+4) level and it is fine. I wonder if the trans solenoid pack is acting up and needs replaced?

2002 chrysler voyager not shifting

I think the 'noticeable' 2->1 downshift is not at all uncommon. I don't usually notice it on my van, but if I have the shift lever in "3" instead of "D", I think the 2->1 downshift occurs at a higher speed and then it is sometimes noticeable (and with the lever in "L", the 2->1 downshift occurs at about 25mph... boy does that ever catch your attention!) - G

I had a great discussion with my dealers transmission tech who's become a good friend and one of the best young techs I've run across in a long time. Basically a poor 2-1 shift is a direct result from improperly set up (or worn) clutch pack. During a rebuild he allocates extra time to correctly set the clearances which makes for a smooth operating unit. He felt even the factory gets in a hurry at times (imagine that) and some units work better than others. I'm just conjecturing but this may be the reason for the reportedly higher durability clutch material introduced in the 07's...

Yes, my 2001 has a hard downshift problem. If I drive in 3 it seems to go away?? After a fluid change it gets worse but only if it is in the D position. It almost feels like another car is bumping your rear bumper. Its been like that for the last 20,000 miles or so. Its still working!!! Knock, Knock

Thanks for the info. Mechanic didn't pull up any codes and said that it is a very common complaint amongst DC owners. I guess if it ain't broke....I won't fix!!!

Do you still have powertrain warranty?

I have an aftermarket powertrain warranty. I've dealt with them before on other repairs and they will not fix anything until it's broken.

I changed my trans fluid a month ago. This symptom started. Research showed the TCM needs to be "quick learned". Need a dealer to reflash this. They charge an hour labor or about $100. I left the shop today and the problem is gone. It was the shift out of overdrive while slowing down. Seems the trans fluid and filter change allows the fluid to move "differently". The computers sense the change and adjust accordingly. The computer needs to relearn since you've messed with stuff. The service "writer" was clueless when I asked for a "quick learn". It just so happened a seasoned mechanic was standing behind him and overheard us. He knew exactly what this was. Had he not been there, who knows what the service "writer" would have tried to sell me in terms of wanting to troubleshoot this abrupt downshift.

I've had a few of these vans do this to me also. It seems like it drops around 25-30mph & shifts down abruptly. I have a good mechanic at my local Chrysler dealership & he has taken them in & done a "re-learn" sequence in the transmission controller & it has repaired every one of them. It re-programs the shift points in the transmission controller. There is some of this that will not go away because it's normal operation. Hope that helps

2002 chrysler voyager not shifting

Rough downshift after transmission fluid / filter service Replaced fluid / filter for 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport this week and am now experiencing noticeable downshift at about 40 kms/hr when gently slowing down (not noticeable on more abrupt stops), very similar to downshifting manually into 3rd. Discussed with Transmission Shop, who used proper Mopar ATF-4 transmission fluid, and was told the transmission computer was relearning my driving habits and problem should lessen or go away after numerous driving cycles (70, I bellieve he said, but don't quote me). If it didn't then they asked I bring the van back so they could relearn?? the computer with their equipment. I don't expect any charge for this if it needs to be done. Otherwise the transmission shifts smoothly and works like before.

I just noticed this problem 2 days ago when i was driving on the highway. When slowing down, the car jerks abruptly at around 30 mph. After reading through, is this an issue with the transmission, or computer? The Chrysler dealer is not so close for me so before i bring it in.... I am still covered under the powertrain warranty. Thanks

Have heard of the noticeable downshift concerns with relatively new Caravans (a 2005 that was purchased new for example) which the Dealer said was normal. With my van, I might have noticed a rough downshift once a month, but certainly not frequently, until this recent transmission service. Suggest that you come up with a good description of the problem (such as "similar to shifting manually down to 3rd") and talk with your dealer, hopefully with someone (not the Service Manager, who may not have the "savy".) such as the transmission technican or alternately with a reputable Transmission Shop. Is fluid level okay?

mine clunks when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear. just a slight nudge that you can feel and hear. and its when its in the normal drive/shift setting. tranny fluid not replaced yet that i know of. i bought mine used with 65k miles and now have 72k miles. anyone else have the 3-2 shift bump? is this a sign im heading for a rebuild since the 3-2 shift is less common.?

2002 chrysler voyager not shifting

Jeepman: What you are describing is very common after a fluid change, especially if not done for a while. The tranny had adjusted to the old fluid and is now re-adjusting to the new stuff. The tranny shop seems to know what it’s doing and their advice is correct. If the shifting doesn’t improve in a few days, bring it in and have them do the “quick re-learn” on the computer.

Transmission Woes Pappy: Thanks. The 1995 Caravan I had, Son has it now, and with over 300,000 kms on the odometer - in spite of being broken into 3 times and stolen for joy riding once - left abandoned in a pile of alders - the transmission and engine have never been replaced. Very durable. I expect no less from my 2002 with 160,000+ on the odometer. Toubis: I wouldn't be worried but would follow up with Chrysler transmission technician or reputable Transmission Shop for reassurance. Wabash: Same advice I gave to Toubis. I expect the roughness is from 3rd to 2 in mine as well as there is absolutely no roughness in my vehicle when shifting from 3rd to Overdrive and back. Watch your RPMs if you have a gage and you can see that shift (in / out of overdrive) occurring frequently on the highway. The roughness occurs at about 35 Kms / hour (30 miles / hour). Chrysler electronic transmissions are no exception to concerns as all Manufacturer' have had their share of electronic transmission problems. Check Phil Edmunds 2006 version of Lemonade for SUVs, Vans, and Trucks where he mentions problems with Asion transmissions as well.

I have had the same 2-1 hard downshift issues (betwen 25-30mph) for the last week on a '03 Voyager (3.3). Everything else shifts flawlessly. I purchased the van used with 35k and it now has 51k. A couple of days ago the van was in with my usual mechanic to track down the cause of the P0456 EVAP LEAK MONITOR SMALL DETECTED code (problem = cracked /damaged hoses). He made the repair, and then I had him check the tranny and said that no codes came up and there were no solenoid issues. The thing that scares me is that the common theme with the previous posts seems to be recent tranny fluid changes, which I haven't had. A fluid check this week showed that the fluid level was perfect, clean and good color. The only difference in the time that the hard downshift has been occuring is that the WI weather has been between -4 and about +10. Can the extreme cold actually have an affect? Could the vaccum leak have thrown something off? If not, would it be recommended to first try a fluid change (it's due anyway) and then if it continues bring into the dealership for the "re-learn"? Or just go straight to the dealership? Thanks

Transmission Woes I believe the durability / functionality of these transmissions depends heavily on clean fluid and the proper fluid (can't stress that one enough - Mopar ATF 4 or whatever is specified in your Manual) - regular maintenance per Owner's Manual is key. A fluid and filter change might improve Winter operation as well. If the transmission has been flushed in the past there could be dirt from the backflushing on the filter. The Transmission Shop I dealt with this week does not do flushes and showed me a filter (extremely dirty) that he had removed from a vehicle that had been flushed. His concerns are that contaminated fluid is used for the flushing and the filter should be replaced after the flush (not normally done) to get rid of the dirt collected on it. He does fluid / filter changes realizing, of course, that some fluid still remains in the torque convertor which does not get changed. Not a perfect world for sure. Any thoughts out there on flushing versus fluid / filter change?

Big Mezz I want to to thank all the people who reported that a "quick re-learn" on the Dodge transmission could be the solution to my problem. It turns out that it WAS the solution. My local Dodge dealer performed it, and it's shifting fine now. No clunks! Thanks again!

Chrysler Voyager won’t start – causes and how to fix it

Chrysler Voyager is a reliable road companion, but its a machine with hundreds of interconnected parts, and like any other machine it sometimes fail to deliver normal operation. In this article we go through most common causes of Voyager breakdown and how you can fix the problem.

2002 chrysler voyager not shifting

The most common causes that hinders normal starting operation of your Chrysler Voyager are dead 12v battery, corrosion on battery terminals, and dead key fob battery. However, bad alternator, clogged fuel filter, broken starter, blown fuse, empty gas tank, immobilizer error, or any fault in the electrical system can also cause your vehicle not to start.

1. Weak Battery

If your Voyager’s engine won’t crank or cranks very slowly, then the most likely culprit is weak or dead 12v battery. Investigating more closely and doing a battery voltage test will clarify whether the starting problem is due to the battery. A test can be done to measure the voltage between the battery poles, check the acid level and assess the condition of the starter battery.

If a new car battery has been installed, the battery may not have yet reached its full capacity. There is nothing to worry about. A new battery only develops its full capacity over time.

Test 12v battery

The voltage of the battery on your Chrysler Voyager can be measured precisely with a multimeter. Before the test, the multimeter is set to the voltage range of the battery and connected to its plus and minus poles. Successful testing of the car battery, i.e. checking the voltage, usually results in values of approx. 12 to 13 volts. Values above 14 or below 11.5 volts require an expert assessment of the condition of the car battery. Because the battery may have a defect with these measured values and must be replaced.

Jump start Chrysler Voyager

If dead battery is the reason for the breakdown of your Voyager, you can easily jump start it using jumper cables and a healthy battery from another vehicle, or using a battery booster if available.

First connect red cable to the positive terminal of your Voyager’s dead battery, then to the positive terminal of donor battery. Next connect black cable to the negative terminal of donor battery, then to the bare metal in the engine bay of your Voyager. Start the donor vehicle and then your Voyager. Remove the cables in reverse order.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is how-to-jump-start-car-illustration.png

2. Corrosion on battery

Corrosion on the contacts of your car battery leads to loss of contact and reduced current flow, which means that your engine can no longer start properly.

To know if your Voyager’s starting problems are from dirty battery contacts, you need to investigate them. If you lift the rubber covers over the two battery terminals, you can check the terminals for corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you do not have to replace the battery, just clean it.

Clean battery corrosion

To clean the battery on your Chrysler Voyager, you have to remove the pole cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative pole. If the pole clamp is very tight, you can open it with pliers. We advise against using metal pliers, but if you use them, you must make sure that you do not touch any other parts of the body. Next you can unplug the red positive pole cable. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery. After cleaning, reconnect the terminals.

3. Weak key fob battery

If your Voyager has push start/stop button, then its possible that your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle – the battery is only used to send the signal for locking/unlocking. If the key fob battery is empty, the door no longer locks or unlocks at the push of a button. The doors must then be opened manually. The immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source.

How to start Chrysler Voyager with dead key fob battery

If you have a model of Voyager which only has a key fob with start/stop button and no place to insert a key, then try placing your key fob as close to the start/stop button as you can and then start the vehicle. If it doesn’t work, then look in your vehicle’s operational manual for exact location of key fob placement, as it may vary depending on model.

Tip: You can try starting your Voyager with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

4. Broken starter motor

A starter is a motor for starting the engine of your Voyager. The average life of a starter motor is about 100,000 to 150,000 miles, and the life will be shortened if the engine is started more frequently. In any case, since the starter motor also has a limited life, it will break down after using the car for a long time, and if the starter motor breaks down, the engine will not start.

Symptom: When you turn the key to start the engine of your Voyager, you will hear a clicking sound, which is the sound of a bad starter motor. And if the starter motor does not work with a healthy battery, suspect a malfunction of the starter.

If the starter fails, it usually needs to be replaced with a new one.

Temporary fix for starter

If the engine does not start due to the starter, the engine may start if you turn the key while hitting the starter motor with something like a stick or metal tool. This workaround is effective when the parts inside the starter are stuck together or the gears are slightly out of alignment.

However, it is possible that the starter is nearing the end of its life, so it is recommended that you have it inspected at a dealer or maintenance shop.

5. Defective alternator

An alternator is a generator that produces electricity. If your Voyager’s alternator fails, it will not be able to produce electricity and the battery will not be able to charge. Therefore, even if you think that the cause of the engine not starting is a battery failure and replace the battery, the battery will soon run out and the engine will not start.

Alternators rarely break down. In particular, modern cars have improved performance, so it is said that they will last 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Still, it can break down depending on how you use it, and in the case of a used car, the alternator may be quite old. Don’t let your guard down.

If the alternator breaks down, it must be replaced with a new alternator.

6. Clogged fuel filter

The fuel filter of your Voyager does not wear out like a mechanical part, but it gets clogged by dirt and airborne particles and clogs over time. The permeability of the filter drops, and so does the fuel pressure. To a certain extent this doesn’t matter, but if the fuel filter is too dirty, the engine will no longer perform at full capacity and in some instance may not start at all. Cleaning is not possible, you can only change the filter.

7. Fuel pump failure

If your Voyager’s fuel pump fails, then the engine won’t start. The pump normally ensures that the necessary amount of fuel is passed from the tank to the injection system of the engine with sufficient pressure.

Before your fuel pump stops working, it usually becomes noticeable: if your car’s engine breaks down from time to time, the car is difficult to start, the engine jerks a little or the engine performance drops, you should have your pump checked.

Wear or contamination of the pump can be the reason for this. If the pump is leaking, a power contact is broken, a line or a pump lever is broken, the fuel pump is usually also noticeable before failure. You can have a defective fuel pump replaced in your workshop.

8. Blown fuse

In rare cases, a blown fuse could also be the culprit in the breakdown of your Voyager. Check all fuses in the fuse box essential for starting the engine. But, be careful when lending a hand yourself to the fuse box! The box is under power and repairs or tests should always be done in a workshop.

9. Defective spark plugs

Without functioning spark plugs, the engine will not start. The spark plugs themselves are often not affected by a defect. Instead, plug connections on the ignition system come loose. If only one plug is actually loose, you can fix the problem yourself on site. If a spark plug has failed, it must be replaced in the workshop.

10. Rodent damage

Rodent damage can be another reason why your Chrysler Voyager won’t start. The animals crawl under the vehicle and bite through cables and wires. In principle, this can affect all vehicle systems such as the fuel supply, the oil supply or the power supply.

The rodent damage can usually be seen quickly by looking into the engine compartment. The damage caused by the rodent bite can be repaired in the workshop. Be prepared for relatively high costs here.

11. Engine failure

Although very rare, but it can also be the cause of the breakdown of your Voyager. If a vehicle has an engine failure, then nothing works anymore. It is not uncommon for the driver of a vehicle to be responsible for such damage. Typical causes include tearing of the timing belt, incorrect fueling, insufficient oil, hydrolock, overheating of the engine, or continuous driving in an excessive speed range.

Only an experienced mechanic can diagnose engine failure in a workshop.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Chrysler Voyager is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located.

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Voyager. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the wire connected, you should turn the ignition on. But be careful not to start the engine. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be falsified. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and model, you usually also have to type in the engine and vehicle ID number. For exact troubleshooting, always check whether the information is correct.

There are many reasons why your Voyager may not start. When looking for the trigger, you should always start with the most obvious cause, the empty battery.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to call a breakdown service or a workshop. In the event of a defect, the latter can directly initiate the repair.
