Pink Floyd performing live on stage, circa 1972.

Pink Floyd at the Rainbow: ‘many of the audience left in tears’ – archive, 1972

19 February 1972 : Pink Floyd perform music from their as yet unrecorded new work, The Dark Side of the Moon

T his was one of the finest rock concerts I have heard. Ever since their days as house band at UFO – the first “underground” club – the Pink Floyd have been in the experimental vanguard , but have never before progressed quite this far. Their dabbling in electronic games (which marred the first part of their latest, disappointingly pedestrian album) has been transformed into the most complicated, yet, integrated use of electronics and sound systems that any band has devised. The new work on which this is all used, The Dark Side of the Moon, will stand beside Sergeant Pepper and Tommy as one of the rock classics.

These days they don’t just use a quadraphonic system, but fill the hall with speakers, so the sound comes literally from all sides. The new work – which deals with madness and is their first in which the lyrics are important – is almost an hour long and includes taped noises of everything from manic electronic groaning, to a church service that slowly becomes a cacophony of cash registers. In bald print that may sound like gimmickry, but when such effects were used as balance to main theme or improvisation, the effect was startling and exhilarating. In the past, they have concentrated on soaring, ethereal organ for grand, optimistic works like Atom Heart Mother. Dark Side of the Moon is conceived on the same bold scale, but is tougher and more varied. It has slow, lyrical passages (reminiscent of Echoes) and choppy riffs coupled with almost free form improvisation. The result was sad, magnificent, and exquisite. Little wonder that many of the audience left in tears.

Pink Floyd Quietly Releases 12 Rare 1970–1972 Concerts On Streaming Services [Listen]

pink floyd, pink floyd concerts, dark side of the moon, pink floyd money, pink floyd live, pink floyd bootlegs, time pink floyd, careful with that axe eugene, saucerful of secrets, atom heart mother, david gilmour, roger waters, nick mason, richard wright, pink floyd tokyo 1972

Careful with those tapes, Eugune; this week saw  Pink Floyd  unceremoniously upload 12 rare live concerts from 1970–1972 to streaming services. These bootleg recordings hear the British psych juggernauts exploring their early material as well as previewing what would form 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon .

Recorded between February 28th, 1970 and March 16th, 1972, these recordings present a pivotal moment in time for David Gilmour ,  Roger Waters ,  Richard Wright , and  Nick Mason . The group’s expansive late 1960’s/early 1970’s compositions see significant play, with renditions of “Atom Heart Mother inching toward 30-minutes and extended tellings of “Interstellar Overdrive”, “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun”, and “A Saucerful of Secrets” appearing throughout.

While those deep sonic explorations persist, Floyd is also heard moving toward the more focused and lyrically-driven songs that would dominate its later years and most successful records. The March 16th, 1972 concert in Tokyo specifically sees a nearly full-album telling of  Dark Side  a year before its release. The sequence of “Speak to Me”, “Breathe (In The Air)”, “On the Run”, “Time”, “Breathe (In The Air) (Reprise)”, “The Great Gig in the Sky”, “Money”, and “Us and Them”, hears the prolific studio band still fine-tuning the songs in a live setting. The primitive sound effects on “Money” and “Time” along with the rough vocals—partly due to the bootleg recording quality no doubt—show just how far the compositions came from the stage to the studio.

As  Rolling Stone   points out, Pink Floyd may have another motive for sharing these recordings beyond highlighting an exciting time in the band’s history. As a representative for  Sony  told the magazine in 2013, upon  Bob Dylan ‘s massive release of uncirculated music, “The copyright law in Europe was recently extended from 50 to 70 years for everything recorded in 1963 and beyond. With everything before that, there’s a new ‘Use It or Lose It’ provision. It basically said, ‘If you haven’t used the recordings in the first 50 years, you aren’t going to get any more.’”

Whatever the reason, this trove of archival material adds to the ever-expanding vault of newly released content. Stream the new batch of Pink Floyd concerts via the players below.

American Songwriter

Watch Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real Mesmerize a Crowd with an Otherworldly Pink Floyd Cover

W illie Nelson is a prolific songwriter who has a deep well of original songs from which to pull. At the same time, he records and performs a variety of masterful cover songs. At a recent tour stop in California, Willie’s son Lukas Nelson and his band Promise of the Real proved that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. They unleashed an otherworldly cover of “Echoes” by Pink Floyd. Watch the magic happen below.

Pink Floyd included “Echoes” as the final track on their 1971 album Meddle . The track clocks in at over 23 minutes in length and takes up the entire second side of the original vinyl pressing of Meddle . More than that, it’s a fan favorite that deals with empathy, communication, and other universal human concepts. Nelson and his band did an incredible version of the song during their March 3 tour stop at The Sound in Del Mar, California.

[Lukas Nelson & POTR Tour 2024: Get Tickets]

Nelson and the band shaved around five minutes off of the song. So, their version comes in at just under 18 minutes. However, they still left plenty of room for souring instrumental breaks. Additionally, Nelson’s voice is a perfect fit for this or any other Pink Floyd cover. Watch them hypnotize the crowd with “Echoes” below.

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real Remaining Tour Dates

Nelson and Promise of the Real are in the middle of their tour of the United States right now. Those who want a chance to see them do “Echoes” and other songs are in luck. They’ll be on the road until early May. They have a few dates remaining this month. Then, they’ll take the month of April off. The tour will resume on May 3 at the Simmons Bank Arena in North Little Rock Arkansas.
