Trains depart New York City and other cities in New York state, including Poughkeepsie, Albany and Utica. On the way to the falls, you’ll travel through the beautiful Hudson River Valley and have views of the Hudson River (a fall trip is a great way to see the stunning foliage).

Due to the train schedule, it’s best to stay two nights in Niagara Falls area in order to have a full day to see the sights.

New River Gorge

The Cardinal Amtrak route is one of the most scenic on the East Coast, with travel through the New River Gorge in West Virginia. Consider booking your tickets to Charleston, WV from cities including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. You can rent a car in Charleston and drive about two hours to reach the New River Gorge National Park (hiking, rock climbing, campgrounds, whitewater rafting). Or simply stay in Charleston until it’s time to board an eastbound train for the return trip back through the gorge.

From Chicago and other Midwest cities, travel to White Sulphur Springs Station to see the gorge and stay overnight at the Greenbrier Resort . Alexandria and Washington D.C. are also good places to end the trip due to the nearby airports in case you want to fly home.

Keep in mind that the Cardinal only runs three times per week, so you may see unavailable dates when searching for tickets.

A ski getaway, fall foliage destination and charming summer vacation spot, Vermont is a year-round destination. Vermonter trains travel through the scenic Hudson River Valley and views are also beautiful once you are in Vermont, especially in the fall and when snow is on the ground. You can connect with trains on this route in cities including Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and New Haven.

The state capital is Montpelier (pictured above). Which city should you visit? Montreal has a European atmosphere and lots of history and parks to explore. Travel time from New York City is about 11.5 hours. Toronto is larger than Montreal and very cosmopolitan — lots of shopping, entertainment, multicultural neighborhoods — similar to Chicago and New York City. Travel time on Amtrak is about 13 hours from Manhattan. Plan to stay in Canada at least two nights if you want time to sightsee.

Escape the cold weather (or head to the beach any time of year) with an overnight train trip to Florida from major cities on the East Coast. The Silver Meteor , Silver Star and Auto Train travel to many Amtrak stations in Florida . You must transport a vehicle and pay the related fees to travel on the Auto Train, which departs near Washington D.C. and travels non-stop to Sanford, Florida.

There are beautiful water views in Maryland and Virginia, and you’ll go to sleep in the Carolinas and wake up in Florida, making the trip go by quickly, especially if your destination is in North or Central Florida. Blue Ridge Mountains

Most people use the Northeast Regional to travel between big cities on the East Coast, but trains also travel into Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Select Roanoke as your destination, which is in a mountain valley near many hiking trails and places to mountain bike and paddle . As a bonus, the Virginia Museum of Transportation is in town, which has many railroad exhibits.

Due to the train schedule, you’ll need to stay in Roanoke at least one night. Plan to stay two or more if you want to take a drive on the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway , visit local attractions or enjoy the many outdoor activities. You’ll also need to start this trip north of the mountain range, such as in Charlottesville, Alexandria, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Wilmington, Philadelphia or New York City.

Allegheny Mountains

The Capitol Limited route also provides mountain and river scenery on the East Coast. Trains travel through the Allegheny Mountains in Maryland and Pennsylvania, plus stop in two historic mountain towns: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland . Both destinations are near hiking trails and historic attractions, plus you can ride the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland.

To quickly get to the most scenic part of the trip, start in Washington D.C. From there, you can travel 3.5 hours to Cumberland or stay on the train for a few more hours until Pittsburgh . You can also start the trip in Chicago and from cities in Indiana and Ohio and travel overnight to reach the mountains. Plan your trip in late spring or summer to view the most scenery.

Dutch Country

The Keystone Amtrak route travels through Dutch Country farmland from New York City, Philadelphia, Newark (including the airport station) and other cities on the East Coast multiple times each day. It’s a relaxing day or overnight trip that’s great for families, couples or solo travelers. Exit in Lancaster to learn about the Amish community, purchase local food at Central Market or have a fun-filled day at Dutch Wonderland .

Harrisburg , Pennsylvania’s capital, is another destination to plan a trip around, especially in the summer. The charming city is on the Susquehanna River, and top attractions include the National Civil War Museum and State Museum of Pennsylvania . Hersheypark and Hershey’s Chocolate World are also about a 25-minute drive away. Uber and Lyft are transportation options if you don’t want to rent a car.

New Orleans

For a long-distance train adventure, New Orleans is at the end of the Crescent route, which departs from many cities on the East Coast. You’ll travel through small towns and cities in the Southeast before crossing over Lake Pontchartrain via the longest railroad bridge in the United States.

Be sure to check out the amazing food, music and festivals in New Orleans while you’re there. You can walk or ride streetcars around the city to explore the Garden District , French Quarter , Jackson Square and old cemeteries . Other top sights include the National World World II Museum , Audubon Zoo and the New Orleans Museum of Art .

Plan to stay in New Orleans at least two nights if you want to have a full day in the city. You can then take a train or flight back to the East Coast or continue your rail vacation by booking tickets on the Sunset Limited or City of New Orleans routes. Trains on these routes depart from New Orleans and travel through Texas, Arizona, California, Mississippi, Tennessee and Illinois. Top destinations include Chicago, Memphis, Houston, San Antonio, Palm Springs and Los Angeles.

Setting out on a long-haul train journey has been dubbed ‘land cruising’ for good reason. The unique mode of transportation, not just the destination, is the focus—similar to ocean and river cruises. Traditionally, rail “cruises” include at least two overnight stays onboard, with a private compartment in a sleeping car.

If you’re willing to pay north of $1,000 (per person) per night, you can find lots of ultra-luxe rail excursions. With private train operators such as Belmond and Golden Eagle, you can ride in refurbished heritage cars or new purpose-built cars, many including compartments with private showers, along with elaborate lounge cars and opulent dining cars. These trips can be up to two weeks long—and can cost a fortune.

Train Journeys That Won’t Break the Bank

But a few long-distance train journeys, operated by regular railway companies, provide a “land cruise” option at prices comparable to those of ocean cruises. Here are a few of the best that run for at least two nights, and offer two-person sleeping compartments.

USA: Amtrak, California Zephyr Train Journey

Amtrak runs four train journeys that run two nights: The California Zephyr between Chicago and Emeryville (near San Francisco), the Empire Builder between Chicago and either Portland or Seattle, the Southwest Chief between Chicago and Los Angeles, and the Sunset Limited between New Orleans and Los Angeles. Of the four, the consensus seems to be that the California Zephyr provides the best scenic option, with mostly-daylight travel through both the Colorado Rockies and the California Sierras, in both directions. The trip runs daily, and takes about 52 hours.

Amtrak fares are capacity driven, meaning that cheap seats sell out early. For a test trip in mid-April, a two-person roomette on the California Zephyr is $656, but fares at other times can be close to double that figure. The roomette has two bunked beds, (one is an upper, so at least one person must be nimble enough to climb up the small ladder); the room has a washstand, and the shower is at the end of the car. The fare includes all meals. Amtrak offers minor senior and other discounts, but only for the base rail rate; discounts do not apply to sleeper accommodations.

Canada: VIA Rail, The Canadian

The top land cruise in North America, VIA Rail’s The Canadian , runs twice weekly from October 14 to May 1, and three times weekly during the summer. The most scenic portion of the three-night, 82-hour trip is riding through the Canadian Rockies, with a bit more daylight viewing eastbound rather than westbound. Two-person cabins on VIA Rail are bigger than roomettes on Amtrak, with a lower and upper bed and a toilet; the Canadian also includes some one-person cabins. The fare for a sample trip in mid-April is $2,883 for a couple, including all meals. Discounted tickets are typically available as last-minute deals, at around $2,000 USD for two people.

The Canadian also offers a few “Prestige” cabins that include a full-size double bed, a private washroom with a shower, and other high-end benefits. Fares—never discounted, says VIA Rail—are currently around at $7,440, on a par with some private luxury train journeys.

Europe: The Paris-Moscow Express

Europe’s premier two-night trip is currently the 39-hour Paris-Moscow Express , operating once a week. Early spring prices for a couple are $2,938 in a deluxe VIP cabin with a private shower, or $1,207 in a four-person first-class sleeper compartment that you can usually limit to two people by paying a supplement. These fares do not include meals, and trips depart Paris on Thursdays and Moscow on Tuesdays. A similar train operates weekly between Nice and Moscow.

If you’re looking for spectacular mountain, river valley, or coastline scenery, this isn’t the trip for you. It’s mainly plains and rolling hills, but you’re unlikely to geto to see this part of the world in any other way. The train journey passes through France, Germany, Poland, Belarus, and Russia (you’ll need appropriate visas for Belarus and Russia) and is operated by Russian Railways.

China: Beijing to Lhasa Train Journey

Although China, like Europe and Japan, is focusing on developing an extensive high-speed network, it’s big enough that overnight travel is still necessary on many travel routes. And among them, the 40-hour trip from Beijing to Lhasa, Tibet, is the most outstanding and is available via China Highlights . It features the highest railway in the world, reaching an altitude of 16,640 feet, and ending at 11,950 feet at Lhasa. Needless to say, the train passes through some unique scenery. The train is equipped to provide oxygen to passengers, which many will need at that elevation. So, if you have a problem with high altitudes, this train journey might not be for you.

The two-night trip runs daily from Beijing; through trips from other main Chinese cities run to Lhasa less frequently. The best accommodations are in a four-person cabin “soft” sleeper, which costs $195 per person. Fares do not include meals, but the train carries a dining car. This is far from a “luxury” trip even by regular-rail standards, but its unique route makes it worthwhile.

Russia: A Rossiya Train Journey

A long-haul train of superlatives, the pricey trans-Siberian is the world’s longest and most varied single-train rail journey: It crosses almost all of Russia, passing mountains, rivers, the world’s deepest lake, and just about any other kind of scenery you can imagine. To do it in luxury, the Golden Eagle makes its 15-day trip four times each way in 2018, with opulent private rooms, high-end dining, and extended stops and excursions along the way—starting at $31,000 per couple.

For something more economical, the Russian Railway Rossiya train journey takes six nights, with a few short stops to stretch your legs. For a land cruise, you’ll want the top accommodation, a two-berth compartment, for which the Russian Railway website currently posts $767 per person, or $1,534 per couple (for travel in mid-March).

Australia: The Indian Pacific Train Journey

Australia’s long-haul rail system is something of an outlier: Trains operated by a private company, Great Southern Rail , are the only passenger services on three main long-haul routes, including the country’s two longest. The Indian Pacific operates weekly three-night trips each way between Sydney and Perth, and the Ghan operates two weekly two-night trips each way between Adelaide and Darwin. A third trip, the Overland , is a day trip between Adelaide and Melbourne.

The Indian Pacific crosses mountains and deserts, with several off-train excursion stops along the way: at Broken Hill, Adelaide city, and Nullarbor. It’s the only long-haul rail trip to cross an entire continent completely, shore-to-shore. It also traverses the world’s longest stretch of absolutely straight rail line—some 297 miles across the Nullarbor (“no trees”) Plain.

For your land cruise, you will want to travel in Platinum service, with large cabins that feature either a double bed or twins (not bunks), private toilet and shower facilities, in-cabin breakfast, an exclusive dining car, plus a bunch of other special services. The price for travel in mid-April is $3,400 per person ($6,800 for a couple) including all meals. Twin cabins in the less-opulent Gold Class provide upper and lower beds and a private shower and toilet (in a smaller space than Platinum) with an exclusive dining car. The fare for travel in mid-April is $2,342 per person, including all meals and beverages. The Ghan offers a similar service, with an extended excursion stop in Alice Springs.

5 US Sleeper Train Routes for the Ultimate Slow Travel Journey

Sleeper trains are having a moment. And why wouldn’t they? More eco-friendly than flying —with none of the hassle that comes from even just stepping into an airport these days—and a lot more pleasant than driving, overnight rail routes make for increasingly smarter alternatives to cars and planes, turning the journey to your destination into an experience in itself.

While Europe is leading the pack when it comes to taking you from A to B as you rest peacefully in your sleeper car, the US isn’t lagging that far behind. Several lines have in fact stepped up their game in recent years in terms of comfort and on-board services, offering travelers anything from plush beds to dedicated attendants and roomy sleeping quarters.

Here are five sleeper trains that are worth skipping highway tolls and airport lines for.

Coast Starlight

Linking Los Angeles to Seattle in around 34 hours, the Coast Starlight is one of Amtrak’s most scenic rail lines. The route delivers sweeping vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the lush Oregonian forest , with mountains, lakes, and thick woodlands as the main backdrop for most of the trip. You can gawk at them all from the gorgeous observation cars, which feature floor-to-ceiling windows and snug seats to while away the hours and snap plenty of pictures.

Come nighttime, the Coast Starlight’s sleeper cars ensure all the zzzs you need with roomettes, bedrooms, and one family bedroom to choose from (if you book the sleeper car, you also have access to the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge before departure, which is a nice plus). While the smaller roomettes have outside toilets and showers, the bigger accommodations feature an ensuite bathroom for extra comfort, and more space to stretch your legs. Regardless of size, all of them grant access to the restaurant-style dining car for dinner, breakfast, and lunch—all included in your ticket—as well as complimentary coffee to keep you energized throughout the journey.

Top tip: Travel in the summer to get the most daylight, and make sure to take advantage of the early morning fresh-air stops in Oregon after your night onboard. You’ll feel restored in no time.

California Zephyr

At 2,438 miles and almost 52 hours of overall travel time (that’s three days and two nights), the California Zephyr is Amtrak’s second longest route, and the very definition of a long-distance rail journey. Riding from Chicago to Emeryville/San Francisco, you’ll roll through Illinois, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah , Nevada, and California—passing by verdant plains and the Rocky Mountain range, across arid countryside and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada. The whole trip is basically a deep dive into the natural beauty of the United States, and one of those experiences every train aficionado should try at least once in their lifetime.

There are plenty of places to stop and visit on the way—you can get off in Denver and explore the Rocky Mountain National Park or spend a few days in Salt Lake City—but should you choose to stay onboard for the whole ride, you’ll be in for a treat.

With roomettes, bedrooms, bedroom suites, family bedrooms, and one accessible bedroom spread across two levels of its sleeper cars, the California Zephyr has a wealth of sleeping options to cater all needs. All of them come with complimentary meals, dedicated cabin attendants, lounge access in Chicago, and priority boarding, while restrooms and showers are either within the car or ensuite, depending on the room category. The upper-level quarters offer better views and sell out fast, though if you suffer from motion sickness, the lower accommodations might be a better fit.

Besides the sleeping arrangements, however, it’s waking up to the Great Plains and winding through the Rockies and then the Sierra Nevada that’s truly special. Just make sure to always have your camera ready.

Texas Eagle

Another cool way to travel from Chicago to California— Los Angeles , to be exact—by train rather than plane? The Texas Eagle. Amtrak’s longest route (and the longest in America), this three-night, 65-hour journey follows a path first established by the Pacific Railway in 1948, passing some pretty amazing sights: from the Ozarks to Little Rock along the Mississippi River, then into the vast expanse of the Texan countryside.

There are stops in Dallas and Austin along the route, though really, it’s the sheer grandness of the Lone State’s topography—a never-ending mix of remote small towns and rural settlements, wide-open fields and swamps—that’s the trip’s biggest draw.

That, and the fact you can watch it all from compact-to-spacious sleeping quarters, which range from roomettes to suites and feature perks like turndown service, full meals in the dining car for the entire duration of the ride, and coffee, juice, and daily newspaper delivered every morning to your door.

In-room amenities include outlets to keep your electronics charged, lighting and climate controls, and a closet for your clothes (there are also soap and towels if you’re in the higher room categories), as well as an attendant call button should you have any extra needs. If you want to stretch your legs, the Sightseer lounge, with swivel seat, wraparound windows, and a beverage and snack service, is the place to go—and the best spot to meet like-minded travelers to share the journey with.

Rocky Mountaineer

Ok, so the Rocky Mountaineer doesn’t technically have a sleeper car. The private company that runs it is also not American, but Canadian—though one of its trips, the “Rockies to the Red Rocks,” takes place in the States and connects Moab, Utah to Denver, Colorado.

Still, the fact that this luxury rail journey includes overnight stopovers at stylish hotels qualifies it as an excellent alternative to any flight, in our opinion. All the more so when Moab and Denver are actually quite close: Much better to opt for the slow way rather than create unnecessary CO2 emissions , right?

The US-based route takes travelers on a four-day/three-night adventure across the two mountain states—you’ll spend two full days onboard—snaking through rugged canyons and natural archways, awe-inspiring deserts and the majestic Colorado Rockies.

Accommodations include the four-star Hoodoo Moab, Curio Collection by Hilton in Utah and the hip Rally Hotel or Crawford Hotel in Denver —depending on which direction you’re going—with a less splurgy but equally comfortable option in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

If you want to extend the fun, the Rocky Mountaineer also offers a selection of curated packages to start or end your trip in Las Vegas or Salt Lake City.

New York and Chicago are close enough to consider forever ditching flights and choosing a scenic train ride to travel between them instead—at least when you’re in no rush to reach either city.

The best rail journey for the task is the Cardinal, which connects the two in 26 hours and 30 minutes and runs three times a week.

The line offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the eastern US, rolling past the Blue Ridge Mountains, Allegheny range, and the Shenandoah Valley. You’ll wind through the New River Gorge and West Virginia’s wild white-water rivers before reaching the banks of the grand Ohio River, rolling by the quaint towns of Ashland and Maysville all the way to Cincinnati and Indianapolis—this is the only Amtrak route that stops in both metropolises—and, at last, Chicago.

Private roomettes and bedrooms—which include a flexible dining service in their rate—promise comfort and a blissful night’s sleep before you reach your final destination, while a café open to all passengers keeps everyone fueled up for the entire trip.

Unsurprisingly, the Cardinal is pretty popular in the summer and fall, meaning early bookings are highly recommended. Our advice: Treat yourself to a bedroom or suite. Train Essentials: 25 Things to Pack for a Long Rail Journey

Preparing for an overnight train or a long day overlanding by rail? These 25 train essentials will ensure you have a comfortable, safe and enjoyable journey.

Trains are my favourite way to travel – bar none.

And I might be in the minority here, but I love long, drawn-out rail journeys the best.

I’ve done an 18-hour trip by rusty train through corn fields in Northern Myanmar, and rode the Amtrak from Austin to New Orleans. I’ve taken the Reunification Express from Hanoi to Saigon, the Marrakesh Express from Tangier, and the scenic route across Austria from Vienna to Ljubljana .

I’ve been in a train on a ferry to cross from mainland Italy to Sicily , and I was there for the grand re-opening of Cambodia’s Royal Railways from Phnom Penh to Kampot .

Some of my favourite rail journeys of all time are in the Caucasus, particularly the overnight trains between Tbilisi and Yerevan (Armenia) and Tbilisi and Baku (Azerbaijan).

All this to say that I’ve done my fair share of train travel and picked up a lot of handy tips along the way. This list of 25 train essentials includes all the things I pack for a comfortable and safe train journey .

What to pack for a long rail journey: 25 train essentials

1. travel documents.

You’re not going to get very far without the correct travel documents.

If you pre-purchased your train tickets online or through an agent, make sure the document you’re holding is a valid ticket for boarding and not an e-voucher that you have to exchange at the station (I got caught out with this once in Budapest !).

If you’re travelling across an international border, make sure you have your visas and identification in order. Keep your documents somewhere handy – you never know when a ticket inspector might appear.

2. A small bag for valuables

Separate to my main luggage and carry on, I always travel with a third ‘small bag’ that I keep on me at all times. It’s big enough to hold my passport, my phone, my wallet, and one of my external hard drives – i.e. my most precious possessions.

A small bag is particularly handy on a train, when you might want to walk to the dining cart or the bathroom without lugging your backpack around.

Some people might use a money belt or a fanny pack, but I personally prefer a simple sling bag like this one (as a bonus, it’s also anti-theft).

3. Luggage locks

If you’re on a long train trip, chances are you’re going to be in and out of your carriage or seat throughout the journey.

It’s just not practical to carry all your luggage all the time, so I recommend investing in some good-quality luggage locks to keep your gear safe.

I like these these locks because they have a long, flexible mechanism that I can loop through multiple zippers.

Food & drink items

4. insulated water bottle.

A good-quality refillable water bottle is absolutely essential these days. All the better if it’s insulated and will keep your drinking water chilled throughout the journey.

I personally use a S’Well water bottle when I travel and at home. After I left my 17oz version at the airport in Bangkok (devastating!), I upgraded to the 25oz volume, which I actually prefer. The insulation is top-notch, and the exterior coating prevents it from sweating in warm weather.

Not all trains have potable water fountains, so that’s something you need to check in advance. In the absence of a refill station, you’ll need to bring enough water to last you the journey (or else buy bottled water on the train).

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after all my years of train travel, it’s not to skimp on the snacks. Even if your train has a dining cart and you’re able to eat a hot meal, I still recommend bringing plenty of healthy things to nibble on throughout the journey.

To keep things fresh and tidy, you’re going to want to pack a few sealer clips and reusable silicone bags . Again, these items are really helpful for cutting down on single-use plastics and food waste.

6. Something to share

One of the quickest ways to make friends on a long train journey (aside from #21, which we’ll get to soon) is by bringing a few food items you can easily share around.

It’s quite typical for people to share food on trains in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, particularly with tourists. It’s nice to have something to give back in return.

While I usually recommend nuts or dried fruit, those things can be difficult to share. Biscuits or chocolates might be more appropriate in this case. In the Caucasus, it’s a great idea to bring a few pre-sliced churchkhela . A bottle of wine or brandy also works!

7. packing cubes.

If you don’t already travel with them, packing cubes for travel really come into their own on a long train journey. This is especially true on an overnighter when you need quick access to a change of clothes or your toiletries.

When you’re packing for the train, be sure to keep the things you’re going to need in the top of your bag or in your day pack. It’s never fun having to rummage around for something or turn your backpack upside down in a confined space such as a train berth.

8. Travel clothesline

A portable travel clothesline that doesn’t require pegs ( like this one ) can come in very handy on an overnight train. String it up between bunks to air out a wet face towel, or use it to jury-rig a makeshift privacy curtain if you’re on the bottom bunk.

9. Rubbish bag

Not all trains have trash bins inside the compartments. Some have tiny bins that are quick to overflow. Bring your own bag for trash – either a paper bag or a reused plastic bag – to keep your seat area or compartment tidy.

10. hand sanitiser.

If you’ve ever been on an overnight train in Southeast Asia, you’ll know full well that the bathrooms often aren’t very glamorous.

These days, you can find hand soap and even paper towels on most trains – but I don’t know if that’s ever going to be enough to get the germs off. I always carry hand sanitiser on the train – and remember to keep it somewhere handy so you don’t have to rummage through your things to find it.

11. Biodegradable wet wipes

Biodegradable wet wipes are great for cleaning down train tables, cleansing sticky fingers, and for using in the place of toilet paper when none is provided (not unusual on a train).

Biodegradable wet wipes are better for the environment. These ones are multi-purpose, and these ones are created especially for bathroom use.

12. Re-hydrating face mist

One of the easiest ways to freshen up without having to set foot in the train bathroom is by using a re-hydrating face mist.

I carry this non-irritant aloe and cucumber one whenever I travel and use it all the time on train, bus and plane journeys.

Train essentials for getting a good night’s sleep

13. sleeping bag liner.

If your train journey is overnight, you’ll be given clean linens to make up your bed (this is typical throughout Southeast Asia, the Caucasus, and in Europe). However, if you’re at all fussy about the quality of your bedclothes, it can be a good idea to bring your own.

Silk sleeping bag liners are lightweight, compact, and perfect for this purpose. I’ve been on overnight trains in Vietnam where the sheets were, uh, sub-par – I just hopped into the safety of my silky bag and forgot all about those suspect mattress stains.

If the train pillow looks dodgy, you can also use it as a pillow case. For winter travel, you might prefer to use a fleece version .

14. Roll-up travel pillow

I suffer from migraines that are often triggered by sleeping in a bad position, so I always travel with my own pillow. This roll-up travel pillow has been by my side since 2013 (don’t worry, it’s machine-washable and I clean it regularly).

I swear by it – it’s so much better than a neck support pillow while still being compact and lightweight. I use mine on trains, buses, and as my regular sleeping pillow.

15. Silicone ear plugs

Even if you have a private berth, trains can be noisy at night – especially with the clunking and crunching of machinery. Reusable silicone ear plugs like these ones are absolutely essential if you’re a light sleeper and a good idea even if you’re not.

16. Weighted eye mask

One of my worst overnight train trips was from Bangkok to Butterworth in the third-class open-bunk carriage. I was on the top bunk, and they left the fluorescent ceiling lights on all night . Even with a curtain drawn around my mattress, the light still came in through the top and kept me awake.

I only wish I had thought to pack an eye mask (duh). I now travel with a weighted eye mask which does wonders for my migraines, too.

What to wear on the train

17. plastic slippers or thongs.

If you’re on a long train trip, you’re going to need a pair of shoes you can easily slip on to wear in common areas and to the bathroom. These lightweight slippers are machine-washable and great for travel.

Just remember to bring a bag to put them in when you’re ready to pack up – you don’t want those tainted soles touching the rest of your luggage, trust me.

18. Light cardigan or cotton scarf (summer)

Depending where you are, train air-conditioning systems can be notoriously overzealous. Night trains in particular can get very chilly very fast when the central air is left on.

Remember to pack a light cardigan or oversized scarf that you can use to keep your shoulders warm.

19. Warm socks and a comfortable sweater you can sleep in (winter)

If you’re travelling in winter, you’re obviously going to need to take proper gear on the train. In the Caucasus and Eastern Europe, trains all have central heating.

Gadgets to bring on the train

20. powerbank.

Don’t just assume that your train seat or berth is going to have easy access to power. On some trains in the Caucasus and in Vietnam, the only outlets are communal ones located in the corridors.

If you plan on using your phone throughout the train journey, you’ll certainly need to carry a powerbank .

21. Portable WIFI hotspot

Not all trains have WIFI, either – especially older locomotives. A portable WIFI hotspot is worth the investment if you need to stay connected throughout the journey.

And like I mentioned earlier, sharing a hotspot is a surefire way to make new travel buddies – it’s probably even better than sharing a bottle of wine.

22. Headphone splitter

If you’re travelling with a partner or friend and you want to pass the time by watching a movie or listening to a podcast, etc., this little device is indispensable for sharing audio.

It’s one of my travel essentials!

23. E-reader

Another travel gadget I couldn’t live without is my Kindle . I can’t read on buses or in cars because I get motion sick. Long train journeys are one of the rare times I can settle down with a book and not feel guilty that I should be working.

When it comes to books that are ideal for reading on trains, Amazing Train Journeys and Monisha Rajesh’s Around the World in 80 Trains are both apropos.

24. Reading light or headlamp

Most trains are fitted with reading lights but there’s no guarantee they will be working. A reading lamp like this one or even a headlamp is always good to have so you don’t disturb other people. It can also come in handy for making your way around the train in the dark.

Of course you could just use the torch on your phone, but that’s going to wear your battery down pretty fast.

25. Your camera

One of the best things about travelling by train is of course the scenery. A lot of people get so caught up in the logistics of the journey or finding ways to pass the time that they forget to look outside.

Make sure your camera is easily accessible so you don’t miss out on any photo opportunities. Oftentimes, trains pass through landscapes other travellers miss out on when they’re moving around by plane or car – so here’s your chance to see something truly unique.

I recently upgraded to the Olympus OM-D E-M5 . It’s super lightweight and when paired with a prime lens, perfect for snapping fast-moving scenes from train windows.

More packing tips

Pack light. The less you carry, the more freedom you have. Besides, who wants to have to worry about squeezing their stuff into train luggage racks. Here are 10 excellent tips for travelling light.

Choose a minimalist backpack. It will help you keep your pack under control and maybe make you less of a target for pick-pockets. Here are my favourite minimalist backpacks and day packs.

13 Best Scenic Train Rides in Colorado You Can’t Miss (2023)

The  Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Ride  is one of my favorite scenic train rides in Colorado. As a Ouray resident, I’ve had the opportunity to ride this train in various seasons for fun, adventure, and even holiday tradition.

You hop on the train in Durango, and it takes you on a beautiful 3.5-hour ride through the San Juan Mountains to the mining town of Silverton. The train ride features:

• Rolling hills
• Views of epic mountains
• Steep cliffs (close enough to touch…but don’t touch!)
• Narrows canyons
• Raging rapids

You’ll have a 2-hour layover in Silverton to explore, shop, and eat before hopping on the train to reverse the route back to Durango. It’s an all-day train adventure that’ll give you some of the best views of the San Juan Mountains from the not-so-cushy seats of a train.

Really, they’re not super-duper comfortable.

You can choose an open-air train car or an enclosed car—during the summer, I highly recommend the open-air option. You get much better views of the surrounding scenery, and there’s a bit more room for kids to walk around and explore.

Other Durango and Silverton Train Rides

Now, that’s just the  traditional  Durango and Silverton train ride experience, but the railroad has a few other options to explore:

• Cascade Canyon Express:  Condense your journey to just 5 hours (instead of 9+) while still seeing jaw-dropping scenery, geological features, and epic high mountain curves.
• Cascade Canyon Winter Train:  Take a trip to Cascade Canyon and back in the middle of winter for an unforgettable snow-bound train experience.
• The Polar Express:  Listen to the story of the Polar Express while dancing chefs serve you hot chocolate. You’ll visit the North Pole, and Santa Claus even makes a surprise appearance on the train to give each child the “first gift of Christmas.”

Backpackers can also use the train in the summer to get prime access to the Chicago Basin hiking area. During warm summer months, entire cars will get off and on at this destination to go experience the remote Weminuche Wilderness and bag some of Colorado’s most epic 14’ers.

2. Georgetown Loop Railroad 

The  Georgetown Loop Railroad  is arguably the best train ride near Denver, Colorado. It’s less than an hour’s drive away from the Mile High City and just a skip off I-70 to park and embark.

You’ll hop on the train for a short 2-mile ride between the historic mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. Right from the get-go, the train takes you over a scenic bridge with thrilling vertical drops on both sides. This is the pinnacle of exposure on a bridge, and they help freeze the moment in time by completely stopping in the middle to allow for pictures. 

The train takes you over a handful of other bridges as it winds its way across the rocky canyon toward Silver Plume. Once you reach the end of your journey, you have the option to get off and explore some tourist attractions at Lebanon Silver Mine (you’ll pay for that  before  you get on the train). After the train gets sorted out, you’ll ride back to Georgetown to end your locomotive journey.

The Georgetown Loop Railroad is the perfect train ride for families because it’s not too long and not too short. You get just the right amount of time on the train without your kiddos getting bored or antsy—it’s a win-win for everyone.

3. Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride

The  Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Train Ride  takes passengers on a 45-minute trip to see the rich history of the area’s gold mines. You’ll get to ride the 15-ton iron horse steam locomotive and see amazing views of Pikes Peak, Echo Valley, and historic gold mining camps. 

It’s a first-come, first-serve train ride, so you’ll need to get in line to earn yourself a spot. All the cars are open, and the train runs rain or shine—so prepare to get a little wet if the weather looks dicey.

The conductor narrates the entire journey, and these people are top-notch. They care about this area’s history, and they’ll share dozens of interesting facts you’ll  actually  want to hear. 

4. Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Despite its breathtaking views, the Royal Gorge is still a  Colorado hidden gem  (relatively). Seriously, ask a Colorado local if they’ve been to the Royal Gorge, and you’d be surprised by how few have visited (and how few know about it).

The Royal Gorge Railroad  takes you through the winding gorge and gives you a unique bottom-up view of the tall cliffs, the winding Arkansas River, and the Royal Gorge Bridge (one of the world’s tallest suspension bridges).

Unlike most of the train rides on this list, the Royal Gorge Railroad feels a bit more ritzy. They offer first-class seating and dining, and the train also features themed rides like  Murder Mystery Dinner Train ,  Mother’s Day Train,  and  Royal Afternoon Tea at the Mansion .

5. Colorado Amtrak

The  California Zephyr train  passes through the heart of Colorado, making a stop in Denver as it makes its way between the end destinations of Chicago and Emeryville, San Francisco. You get a taste of everything the Western United States has to offer on this long train ride:

• Snow-capped Sierra Nevadas
• Desert terrain
• Rocky Mountains
• Glenwood Canyon
• Winter Park
• Moffat Tunnel
• San Pablo Bay

The train serves over 30 train stations along the journey, but here are the notable stops in Colorado:

• Fort Morgan, CO (FMG)
• Denver, CO – Union Station (DEN)
• Fraser-Winter Park, CO (WIP)
• Granby, CO (GRA)
• Glenwood Springs, CO (GSC)
• Grand Junction, CO (GJT)

This is not a “historical” train ride. You’ll get cushy seats, sleeper cars, dining options, and observation cars for a comfortable traveling experience. 

6. Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

The  Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad  takes riders on a 65-mile journey through Toltec Gorge and over the 10,000-foot Cumbres Pass—hence, the name. It’s a 6.5-hour ride with amazing views the entire way, and the train itself is a National Historic Landmark. 

The railroad describes itself as the “longest, the highest and most authentic steam railroad in North America.” You cross the state border with New Mexico 11 times as you zigzag through canyons, tunnels, and trestles. Right from the get-go, the train leaves the station and begins a steep 4% climb into the mountains.

You’ll see:

• Old mining camps
• 600-foot deep walls of Toltec Gorge
• 137-foot-tall Cascade Creek Trestle
• Chama Valley
• Tanglefoot Curve
• Rio de los Pinos

7. Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad

The  Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad  takes you on a 2.5-hour train ride to the Continental Divide with amazing panoramic views of the Arkansas River Valley and Leadville’s colorful mining past. 

Along the way, you’ll see Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive (Colorado’s 2 tallest mountains), Freemont Pass, and the thick trees of the San Isabel National Forest. Depending on the time of year, you’ll also see fields of vibrant wildflowers surrounding the train as it meanders through the hills and mountains.

8. Tiny Town and Railroad

Tiny Town and Railroad  is far from a  traditional  scenic Colorado train ride experience, but it’s something your children might appreciate even more. They’ll feel like giants in this children-sized town filled with replica buildings and a miniature train built for them.

It’s a 10-minute train ride that takes you around the unique park, and it’s powered by a real steam engine. The park is actually a decent size, with tons of shade-providing trees and over 100 tiny buildings. Oh, and the train ride is just $2 per ticket. This place is  not  a tourist rip-off—it’s a genuinely good time for kids and train enthusiasts.

9. Rockies to the Red Rocks

The  Rocky Mountaineer  train takes travelers for a colorful ride through western Colorado’s red rock territory. It stops in Denver, Glenwood Springs, and Moab, UT, as it winds through canyons and happens upon vast desert expanses. 

Between Moab and Glenwood Springs, you’ll see incredible views of Mount Garfield and Ruby Canyon. Enjoy the springs for the rest of the evening before getting on the train for Day 2 between Glenwood Springs and Denver. This portion of the train ride crosses the Continental Divide with the 6.3-mile Moffat Tunnel. 

10. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway  is the highest cog train in the world, taking riders from Manitou Springs all the way up to the top of Pikes Peak (at 14,115 feet). It’s a 3.5-hour roundtrip ride with magical views of the Rocky Mountains and never-ending views of the plains to the east.

Discover Katharine Lee Bates’s inspiration for writing the song “America the Beautiful.” When she arrived on top of Pikes Peak, she wrote, “All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.”

It’s hard to disagree.

While Pikes Peak is the star of the show, you’ll also get to experience dozens of other sights along your 9-mile trip to the top:

• Ruxton Creek
• Englemann Canyon
• Minnehaha Falls

Want to mix up your adventure? Hike up Pikes Peak and save your knees with a quick trip down on the Cog Railway. Oh, and enjoy a high-altitude doughnut at the summit for top-notch fuel.

11. Ridgway Railroad Museum & Train Ride

The  Ridgway Railroad Museum  features historic Colorado train equipment, and you can go out and view the cars at any time. However, you’ll need to wait until they’re open to look inside the cars and museum.

Come visit on a Saturday, and you can get a free ride on Motor No. 1 and Goose No. 4 as it rides around the few acres of property. You’ll get stellar views of the Cimarrons and Mt. Sneffels as you make loops around the train yard.

12. Winter Park Express Ski Train

The  Winter Park Express Ski Train  operates in partnership with Amtrak to take ski enthusiasts from Downtown Denver to the high-altitude slopes of Winter Park Resort. You can ride the train from mid-January to the end of March during peak ski season to avoid I-70 traffic and enjoy the no-stress adventure of train rides and skiing.

You could even take plane to train by flying into Denver International Airport and taking the A-Line to Union Station in Downtown Denver. It’s an expensive route to get to Winter Park, but the nature of public traveling feels almost European (almost).

13. Southwest Chief

The  Southwest Chief  is another Amtrak line that connects Chicago and Los Angeles with a few stops in Colorado’s southwest region:

• Lamar, CO (LMR)
• La Junta, CO (LAJ)
• Trinidad, CO (TRI)

These are seldom-visited Colorado towns with lots of natural beauty and adventure to offer. Visit Trinidad Lake for top-notch camping, hiking, boating, and fishing, or go on an epic hike up the Spanish Peaks.

14. [Bonus – Closed] Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad takes travelers on a beautiful route from Alamosa to La Veta in Southern Colorado. The steam and diesel trains provide amazing views of the San Luis Valley and a handful of crossings through historic train towns.

Growing in popularity, sleepers offer the perfect combination of travel and accommodation in one

Long-distance train travel is having a moment it seems. Whether the appeal is the old-school romance of being rocked to sleep on the rails, perhaps waking up in another country, concerns about climate change and the carbon footprint of flying, or a desire to experience slow travel and take in more of your surroundings on your journey, a sleeper train offers the perfect combination of travel and accommodation in one. 

Taking a night train across Europe "is an exceptionally convenient, efficient and budget-friendly way to explore the region", said Rail Europe . That's because the price of your ticket also covers the cost of a night's accommodation. "So take the money you would have spent on a hotel and add another leg onto your trip or splurge at your next destination."

London to Venice

The Venice Simplon Orient Express is the "grand dame of sleeper trains", said The Times . Since being immortalised by Agatha Christie it's "become the byword for yesteryear elegance", as "one of the few surviving chariots of the golden age of travel". Luxe to the max, its interiors feature "wood panelling and lush drapes, antique lamps and art deco mirrors, and a Bar Car with live music". If money is no object, "splash out on one of the six grand suites for marble en suites, butler service and as much champagne as you can glug". Nowadays, you travel from London Victoria "aboard the luxury private Belmond British Pullman" to Paris, before joining the Orient Express for the overnight leg to Venice.

Trondheim to Bodo

"Under normal circumstances, the jaw-dropping views offered by any Norwegian rail journey would make a night train a wasted opportunity," said Lonely Planet . However, travel this 430-mile route into the Arctic Circle in summer and "you needn't miss anything – the sun will hardly set". This means you can "enjoy views of woodland, lakes, mountains and tundra at any time of the night", said The Times. In winter it "looks like an understudy for the Polar Express" as it "snakes past pine forests laden with snow". And between September and March there's the chance of seeing the northern lights.

Brussels to Prague

The European Sleeper leaves Brussels Midi station at around 7.20pm and pulls into Prague just before 11am, "perfect timing for passengers to enjoy lunch and a stroll around the Czech capital before checking into a hotel", said CN Traveller . This route is an extension of the Brussels to Berlin service and "it's an ideal starting point for UK-based travelers looking to snooze their way deeper into Europe", said Lonely Planet, "since there's no need in Brussels to change stations (as in Paris)".

Paris to Vienna

The French capital is "gradually restoring its reputation as a hub for overnight services", said The Times , with plans for multiple routes from 2025. For now, try the Nightjet from Gare de l'Est, a short walk from Eurostar's Gare du Nord, to Vienna. With "perhaps the most perfect timings of any overnight sleeper, leaving mid-evening and arriving just before elevenses", there's plenty of time to "savour this cross-section of Europe". In the evening, you're "traversing Champagne country to Strasbourg", then "sashaying along the Danube from Salzburg in the morning, with a big chunk of Germany in between".

Milan to Palermo

"Long and skinny", Italy is "ideal for train travel", said The Telegraph . And it's "still quite an odyssey" to leave Milan, "one of Europe's grandest railway palaces" and "go all the way to the toe of the boot and cross over to Sicily". This represents "the chance to ride a train and a boat at the same time", said The Times. After leaving the northern capital in the evening, and "heading south through the hours of darkness" it's time to enjoy "coffee and a croissant in your cabin" while "admiring the coastal views". The train is "shunted on to a special ferry" to cross the Strait of Messina to Sicily, and you'll reach Palermo late that afternoon.

Zurich to Zagreb

Crossing five countries in around 15 hours, this is "one of Europe's most scenic routes", said Lonely Planet. It is particularly "worth taking" in summer, as it passes through Austria and Slovenia – "both countries where you're hard-pressed to find an unattractive railway line". The train leaves Zurich at 7.40pm and, next morning, "be sure to wake up before 8am", said The New Zealand Herald , "as the last section between Ljubljana and Zagreb, when the train snakes alongside the Sava River, is one of the most picturesque".

London-Scotland

One of the UK's two sleepers, both of which "have recently benefited from major upgrades" that "many see as a vote of confidence in the country's overnight services", said Lonely Planet. Departing from London Euston, the "legendary" Caledonian Sleeper heads north "via a series of carriage shuffles unnoticed by the snoozing passenger, reaches Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen, Fort William and points in between". On a moonlight night you can expect "sweeping views of stately castles and remote Highland wilderness", said The Times. These new trains "provide proper 21st-century comforts" including Wi-Fi, room service and complimentary sleep kits. Accommodation options include en-suite double cabins, twin bunks and "comfort seats". And in the morning "the menu features everything from porridge to a cooked full Highland breakfast".
