How To Transfer American Express Membership Rewards Points to Etihad Guest

You’ve been earning Membership Rewards ® points* for your dream vacation to the Middle East and other captivating destinations. The next step is to book your travel by transferring the points to an airline reward program, like Etihad Guest.

Whether this is your first time transferring points or you are an experienced user of points and miles, we’ll walk you through the process step-by-step to help you transfer Amex Membership Rewards points to Etihad Guest.

How to Transfer Membership Rewards Points to Etihad Guest

To begin, eligible American Express Card members can transfer their American Express Membership Rewards points to Etihad Guest at a 1:1 ratio. This means that for every 1,000 Membership Rewards points you transfer, you will receive 1,000 Etihad Guest Miles.

Now, we’ll present a detailed, easy-to-follow guide on linking your American Express account to your Etihad Guest account for seamless point transfers.

The first step is to register for a free Etihad Guest account. This process takes only a few minutes, and once completed, you can link your Etihad Guest number to your American Express account.

First, you’ll need to log into your American Express account. Once signed in, click the “Explore Rewards” button beneath the points balance.

Select “Transfer Points” on the following screen and view participating airline partners.

Then, choose Etihad Guest from the list of options.

After you’ve chosen Etihad Guest, you’ll be prompted to input your “partner account number” into the provided box.

Link Etihad via Amex Screenshot

In the next step, you must enter your credit card information to verify the Amex account. You can pick 1 of your eligible Amex cards and add the required information if you have multiple.

Finally, after verifying your identification and credit card details, you successfully linked your Etihad Guest account with American Express and can start transferring points.

Before transferring Membership Rewards points to Etihad Guest, it’s important to consider whether it’s the right decision for you. For instance, booking award flights on partner airlines can be a good value.

This award chart is specifically for partner-operated flights that can be booked using Etihad Guest Miles.

Some of our favorite ways to redeem Etihad Guest Miles for maximum value are:

  • New York (JFK) or Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Casablanca (CMN) on Royal Air Maroc for 45,000 Miles one-way in economy or 80,000 miles one-way in business class.
  • Seattle (SEA) to Tokyo (HND or NRT) one-way on ANA for 100,000 Miles in business class
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Santiago (SCL) one-way on American Airlines in economy for 60,000 Miles
  • Charlotte (CLT) to London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way business class on American Airlines for 80,000 Miles

Before booking any flight using Etihad Guest miles, you should verify award space before transferring from American Express to Etihad Guest. Because once you have transferred those points, they cannot be reversed.

American Express offers an impressive lineup of cards earning Membership Rewards points that provide excellent value. One of the benefits eligible American Express cardholders can receive is the ability to transfer points to Etihad Guest, a 1:1 transfer partner, and use them to book an exciting trip. Points can be transferred from American Express to Etihad for booking Etihad flights.

My Outer Banks vacation cost almost nothing thanks to my rewards credit card

  • My kids were excited for their first trip on a plane — and it was thanks to our rewards credit card.
  • We used our card for every purchase and got enough points to cover a flight to the Outer Banks.
  • Because we were staying with family, our vacation came at almost no cost to us.

Insider Today

"Is this their first time?" my seatmate asks.

"It is," I respond, smiling at my beaming son bouncing in his window seat. "For all three of them!"

"They must be so excited."

"They are!" I say, laughing at the understatement.

My kids had spent years asking us what it was like to fly on planes, when they would get to go, and how old my husband and I were when our parents took us. You know, the usual guilt trip. And finally, at the ages of 11, 9, and 7, they were 40,000 feet up, soaring across the US to spend a week on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

I felt guilty that it took so long for us to get them on a plane because, to their point, I took my first plane ride when I was 1. And yet, here they were in elementary and middle school, taking their first plane ride. But we have three kids. When planning a vacation, budgeting our stay, our meals, and our activities, the last thing we can afford is five round-trip plane tickets.

And while we're far from wealthy, this isn't because we're struggling to make ends meet. We swing a family vacation every year; we just always drive to our destination. So, what made our vacation to the Outer Banks different? This time, we saved up for it, not with money but with rewards credit card points.

An introductory bonus covered one person's ticket

By taking our time and being strategic, we amassed enough travel points to fly our family of five from Kansas City, Missouri, to Norfolk, Virginia, and back again, and we had points left over.

Our strategy was simple. First, we applied for a credit card that offered introductory bonus points that would cover at least one person's round-trip ticket — and that was before we started earning. Before we started using the credit card, we agreed on a plan for using the points we would earn. From there, we paid for everything with that card. And I mean everything.

We still paid off our credit card from our checking account every month, but the initial expenses were always charged to our credit card first. Our utility bills, our gas, our groceries, Christmas presents, birthday gifts, home improvement, weekend hotel stays, and even a short family vacation to the Ozarks. By taking our time and earning every point we could, we earned enough points for our family to fly to Virginia.

We saved by staying with family

But our savings didn't stop with credit card points. My husband's parents invited us to join them in the Outer Banks and generously paid for our accommodations while we were there. Between a free stay and free flights, and local friends who let us use their car — our epic nine-day vacation cost us only the price of food.

While our situation was unique to us, it illustrates a creative way to get the most out of your travel points. Whether you have long-distance friends who would love to have you stay, relatives with timeshares they're happy to let you in on, or, like us, you have loved ones invite you to share their vacation rental, the opportunity for a free place to stay comes up much more frequently than the offer of free travel.

Saving up your travel points in anticipation of these occasions will make it easier for you to seize those opportunities when they come, and it will help you take a vacation for an incredibly low cost.

It feels like spending free money

Also, many travel rewards credit cards don't limit your point rewards to airplane tickets. If you can save up enough travel points, you can use them for your travel as well as your destination by using them to rent a hotel room.

Racking up these kinds of points can take a long time. Patience is necessary, but so is strategy. While I like the method of using your travel credit card for all your major and minor purchases, you can likely get even further faster by paying close attention to what types of purchases will earn you double and triple points.

What I like about credit card points is that, in many ways, it feels like you're spending free money. I wouldn't normally blow thousands of our hard-earned dollars flying our entire family to North Carolina when we could drive for half the price, but this didn't feel like an expensive indulgence. Instead, it felt like a gift we gave ourselves with forethought and a little financial maneuvering. And we used this gift to make a memory for our kids that will last them a lifetime.

You can now apply for Wells Fargo’s newest credit card: the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card.* This new travel card could give incumbent travel credit cards from  Chase ,  American Express  and  Capital One  a run for their money.   Out of the gate, Wells Fargo does one thing better than its competitors: It offers a more flexible rewards program that doesn’t require booking travel in a portal to earn the highest rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of  the best travel credit cards , plus four insider tips to help  you  decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Before we dive into the hidden features and benefits, here’s an overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases.
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance.
  • $95 annual fee.

4 important details about the autograph journey .

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5x points on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, whereas other travel purchases earn 2x points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

4. You may need to wait to apply

If you’ve applied for another Wells Fargo card in the last six months, you’ll likely have to wait a little longer before applying for the Autograph Journey.

Wells Fargo states in its terms and conditions, “If you opened a Wells Fargo Credit Card account within the last six months, then you may not qualify to open an additional Wells Fargo Credit Card account. We may also limit how many open Wells Fargo Credit Card accounts you have.”

So if you want the new Autograph Journey, you should steer clear of applying for other cards from Wells Fargo for now. If you’re approved and use the card responsibly for six months or longer, you can consider adding additional Wells Fargo credit cards to your portfolio.
