Governing Law

You and TC Global agree that any cause of action arising out of or related to the Service must commence within one (1) year after the cause of action arose; otherwise, such cause of action is permanently barred.

Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms of Use and/ or other policies available on this App, including any question regarding its existence, validity or termination, shall be referred to and finally resolved by arbitration administered by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC") in accordance with the Arbitration Rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre ("SIAC Rules") for the time being in force, which rules are deemed to be incorporated by reference in this clause. The Tribunal shall consist of 3 arbitrators. The seat and venue of Arbitration shall be Singapore and the language of proceedings shall be English. Subject to the foregoing, the Courts of Singapore shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes relating to the subject matter, herein.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, if a dispute arises with respect to the validity, scope, enforceability, inventorship, ownership, infringement, breach or unauthorised use of any patent, trademark, copyright or other intellectual property right or any non-proprietary data owned and/or controlled by TC Global, whether or not arising from the Terms of Use, such dispute (at the option of TC Global) shall not be submitted to arbitration and instead, TC Global shall be free to initiate litigation, including but not limited to a claim for interim injunctive relief, in a court of competent jurisdiction, in any country or other jurisdiction in which such rights apply.

Integration and Severability

UCLA Travel Study

Explore the world with ucla faculty.

Travel Study programs combine the excitement of study abroad with the academic rigor of classes taught by UCLA faculty. Study on the go for 3-5 weeks on customized programs designed in collaboration with faculty and onsite partners. Most major logistical components are pre-arranged aside from airfare (such as housing and program activities). These programs offer direct UCLA credit that can satisfy degree and/or general education requirements. Travel Study is open to everyone, but you must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma by the start of the program. Current students must be in good academic standing.

We recommend students apply during the Priority Enrollment window (11/16-11/30) for best availability. Program space is first-come, first-served and will open for Summer 2024 on November 16th .  Program fees will be available by November 16th.

Earn up to 3 hours of graduate-level semester units of credit (per course) for traveling to unique places around the world. Whether you spend time traveling to Hawaii, national parks, local museums, exhibits, or any other destinations of your choice, this professional development course option allows you to integrate your travel study experiences into your classroom or program. The objective is to design and develop a personalized academic program based on independent travels anywhere within the United States or abroad. You will be motivated to conduct intensive examination of your choice of a wide variety of topics, including but not limited to, educational systems; multi-cultural comparisons; perspectives on the social, historical, artistic, political, anthropological, scientific or religious aspects in or about other countries.

Traveling will enable you to draw your students into the lessons more effectively – and not just by regurgitating information you have read. By giving them a piece of the excitement you brought back with you! Through your travels, you can make history, geology, art, language, culture, current events – just about every subject – come alive, to yourself and your students!

Graduate-level credit will be awarded upon completion of the following:

• Register and make payment for a UOP course from below.
• Complete and submit coursework requirements.

Integrate your travel study experiences into your educational setting. Opportunities are available across all teaching grade levels, disciplines, and subjects or topics. Designed for busy teachers like you, you will get up to 6 months to complete your coursework requirements, and extensions are always granted upon request.

Overview of Requirements

1. Define your travel objective(s): When registering for this course option, you will be required to provide a short description of your travel objectives, and how you plan to create and implement your learning experiences into your program. You may also utilize previous travel experiences for this course option as long as the materials developed are relevant to your curriculum or programs.

2. Create a Travel Journal with times, academic points of interest, and activities relating to your travel experiences and objectives. Your travel journal will document the effort and time that you dedicate to the process of completing your coursework requirements and learning objectives. 

Whether you spend time brainstorming, researching, reading, typing, writing, watching educational videos and films for ideas, constructing visuals, putting together new Powerpoint Presentations or rubrics, you are able to document all the professional time you have invested amplifying and enriching your professional needs.

3. Develop a 25-30 slide PowerPoint or Google presentation (per credit) to demonstrate the professional outcomes of your travel experience, and implement what you have learned directly into the learning process of your students. 

1 credit = 30 Slides

2 credits = 60 Slides

3 credits = 90 Slides

4. Complete a 1-2 page write-up: A minimum one to two page write-up describing utilization and/or professional application of material developed.

* Additional course guidelines, formatting requirements, and information will be provided upon course enrollment.

The credits offered are post-baccalaureate, graded, graduate-level semester units of credit provided directly through University of the Pacific, Benerd College. They are specifically designed to meet the needs of educators for Salary Advancement and Recertification.  The credits are acceptable where local districts approve and applicable to state licensing where authorized. We always encourage that you check with your employer for acceptability of these credits. Course participants are responsible to determine acceptability of these credits for their intended use. Each graduate-level semester credit is equivalent to 15 hours of academic involvement. 

University of the Pacific,  established in 1851, is California’s oldest private chartered university and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Completed courses are letter graded and will appear on an official transcript from University of the Pacific, Benerd College. An Official Transcript with your final course grade(s) is available from Pacific upon successful completion of coursework. The course ending date that will appear on your transcript will reflect the date on which your completed coursework was reviewed and graded.

Faculty-led short term travel courses are an exciting, enriching way to study abroad. You will meet with faculty throughout the semester to prepare for travel through readings, lectures and coursework; then you'll travel during a semester break or during the summer to enhance your learning.

Scholarships

Students participating in a UNE semester abroad program will be awarded a $500 Global Education Scholarship.  Students applying for UNE faculty-led travel courses and those participating in approved non-UNE semester or short-term programs may apply for a  Global Education Scholarship . The average scholarship award is $500 for a strong application. The application requires a resume and several short essays — quality of writing and GPA are taken into consideration. Eligibility requirements apply.

Courses open, bio 422/422l: coral biology.

• Open to: Undergraduate Students

This fall semester course presents an in-depth study of the biology and taxonomy of corals while examining the ecology of the coral reef system and the future of reefs, concluding with a field lab. You will snorkel in the beautiful lagoons of Ambergris Caye, the Hol Chan and Bacalar Chico Marine Reserves. The group is housed in a field station on the northern tip of Ambergris Caye with access to the reef ecosystem, mangroves, seagrass beds, and jungle.

CIT 420: GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP​

• Faculty: Samuel A. McReynolds, Ph.D.

This fall semester course offers the unique opportunity to explore an exciting new era of U.S.-Cuba relations by spending nine days in Havana and in the small coastal town of Varadero. While there, you will perform volunteer activities on an organic farming cooperative and in a local elementary school. You will also engage in cultural learning, studying the history and impacts of the Cuban Revolution, music, dance and the national games of baseball and dominoes.

Egypt, Physical Therapy

Pth 799: physical therapy in egypt.

• Application Deadline: June 15, 2024

In this fall course, you will learn about Egyptian culture including history, government, economics, customs, and religion. The trip itself will be for two weeks in early January. You will spend roughly 5 days in Assiut (a city of 400,000 approximately 5h south of Cairo) at Assiut University. Assiut University is home to 75,000 undergraduate and nearly 20,000 graduate students as well as two hospitals. Physical therapists in Egypt work predominately with patients who have musculoskeletal impairments. You will  engage with physical therapists and patients in the hospital and private PT clinics, as well as attend orthopaedic rounds and observe surgeries. Bookending the trip will be visits to historic and cultural sites such as pyramids, tombs, temples, museums, and of course, the Nile River.

MAR 436/436L: NATURAL HISTORY OF ICELAND

Spring 2024.

This spring semester course provides an in-depth study of the unique ecosystems for marine and terrestrial organisms, as well as the unique human history and culture of Iceland. You will explore geological features like volcanic craters and geysers, hike in the fault line between the American and the European plate and learn about adaptations to a subarctic climate. You will also explore the Viking history of Iceland, which is tightly related to the discovery of America, and Iceland's sustainable energy production.

ORM 275/275L: ARCTIC ADVENTURE TOURISM

• Faculty: Aimee Vlachos, Ed.D., CPRP

Tourism is one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors in the world, thus the demand for proficient workers is increasing continuously. In its 2017 Global Economic Impact Report, the World Travel and Tourism Council reported that, "Over the next 10 years, the sector will support 23% of new jobs created." This course will focus on Arctic marketing, management and communication relevant to the adventure tourism industry. You will gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to design and produce sustainable nature-and culture based experiences. The program's values are based on respect and concern for nature and culture. This course has a travel component which includes travel to Iceland in May where you will participate in activities related to Arctic adventure tourism and meet with local business owners in this field.

EDU 242/242L: COMPARATIVE EDUCATION IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT

• Faculty: Lane Whitney Clarke, Ed.D.

This spring semester course will investigate comparative education theories and philosophy to examine education in different contexts. By investigating contexts locally, nationally and globally, you will extend your knowledge about society and how this is enacted through the institution of its schools. In Ireland, students will visit schools and learn about Irish culture by touring castles, the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, Kylemore Abbey, and the EPIC Museum. Other highlights include the Ring of Kerry, Galway, Kinsale, Killarney and Dublin.

Ireland, Physical Therapy

Pth 799: physical therapy global health ireland, summer 2024.

• Faculty: Scott Stackhouse, PT, Ph.D. | Dana Tischler, PT, D.P.T., Ph.D.
• Application Deadline: January 31, 2024

This summer course will provide you with knowledge regarding cultural competency and sensitivity through classroom learning and clinical observations in Ireland. You will begin on campus in Portland by researching and examining some of the differences between the U.S. and Ireland in the areas of PT education, health care, and culture. You will then travel to Ireland for clinical visits and meetings with PT leaders. You will also travel to Belfast, Northern Ireland.

BIO 241/241L: ANATOMY AND ART IN ITALY

• Faculty: Kaushik Dutta, M.S.

Travel to Italy to discover the intriguing connections between human anatomy and the art of the Classical and Renaissance masters, including Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Bernini. You will tour historic sites in Rome, Siena, Pisa, Florence, and Bologna, representing the birthplace of modern anatomical science in some of Europe’s oldest universities.

ENV 349/349L: ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH, AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN EAST AFRICA

• Faculty: Richard B. Peterson, Ph.D.

This is a spring semester course offered every other year with a 22-day field experience in Kenya in late May/June. Students study Kenya’s contemporary environmental, health and community development issues within East Africa’s political, cultural, and historical contexts. During the field experience you will visit leading universities, museums, and national parks and take an overland journey from Nairobi to Kisumu through the Great Rift Valley. In addition, you will stay with Kenyan families, hike in the Kakamega Rainforest, boat and bird on Lake Victoria, work with local partner organizations on soil conservation projects, and learn from and with community-based conservation researchers at a Maasai-owned educational resource center and conservancy in Kenya’s South Rift.

CIT 420: GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

This spring semester travel course fulfills the Citizenship graduation requirement and includes a nine-day trip to Mexico during spring break. You will spend their first few days in Cuernavaca, an important cultural center in Central Mexico, where you will live with host families and immerse yourself in the community. You will then travel to the nearby village of Amatlán, where you will stay at an ecotourism center, teach English in a local school, and learn about Amatlán’s unique cultural heritage.

Morocco, Occupational Therapy

Otr 699: occupational science in morocco.

• Open to: Master of Science in Occupational Therapy
• Faculty: Kristin Winston, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA
• Application Deadline: September 15, 2023

This fall semester elective course for second-year Occupational Therapy (OT) graduate students provides advanced study in occupational science, occupational therapy without borders, and interprofessional practice with emphasis on the cultural context of occupation. You will explore the transaction of place, objects, and people as they engage in everyday occupation and service to expand occupational participation in Morocco. Occupational experiences with agencies and organizations in Morocco will provide population-based reflection and hands-on experiences. This course includes the development of a sustainable project with outcome measurement based in ecological theory. Designed to immerse you in a new culture, this course will facilitate renewed perspectives of occupation, occupational therapy, interprofessional practice, and global understanding of the value of occupation in society. You will travel to the University of New England campus in Tangier, Morocco in early to mid-January.

Pth 725: department of physical therapy cultural competency experience.

• Faculty: Tara Paradie, PT, MSPT, DHSc

This spring semester course will provide you with knowledge regarding cultural competency and sensitivity through classroom learning and learning experiences within the community in Tangier, Morocco. You will begin on campus in Portland by researching and examining some of the differences between the U.S. and Morocco in the areas of public health, health care, and culture. As the course progresses, you will study cultural competence beyond the classroom and into the world around us. You will travel to the University of New England campus in Tangier, Morocco, in mid-May in order to further experience the different cultures and engage in learning activities that will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate cultural sensitivity with a variety of populations and in a variety of settings.

BIO 459/459L: CONSERVATION & ECOLOGY OF A CARIBBEAN ISLAND

This spring semester course covers topics in history and geology of the Caribbean with an emphasis on the island of Bocas del Toro in Panama. You will study topics such as terrestrial, island, and marine biodiversity, and the ecology and evolution of populations. You will explore both Panama City and the Bocas del Toro, where you will stay at a field station for the Institute for Tropical Ecology and Conservation. Highlights include a boat tour of the Panama Canal, a cacao farm tour, and snorkeling and hiking in Bocas del Toro.

TRA 200: Travel/Study Experience. Goals: To enable students participating in Wesleyan's faculty-led Travel/Study programs to explore important themes and issues in specific areas of knowledge. Content: Topics, texts, and assignments will vary depending on the travel destination. Prerequisite(s): Permission of Instructor; Payment of all fees related to the course and to travel prior to the end of the Drop/Take period. Gen. Ed. Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

I'm a college student studying abroad. I'm shocked at how many luxury trips my classmates take.

• I was excited to study abroad in Florence and to take small, cheap trips while abroad.
• My classmates are not traveling cheaply; they are flying to luxury places like Dubai and the Alps.
• I wonder if they are just doing it for social media, but I'm still enjoying my time abroad.

As a third-year college student attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, I jumped at the chance to study abroad . Trading in a semester of snow and freezing temperatures for beautiful architecture and centuries-old art was a no-brainer.

I was so excited that I filled out the application to study in Florence nearly a year before the day I would depart. Four months in Florence, Italy, was comparable to the cost of a semester at my state school . After talking to my parents and counselor, I believed the cultural experience and travel opportunities were worth it.

I knew that when I arrived, I would have to budget when traveling —doing so through communal hostel stays and low-cost airlines. I was prepared for overstuffed backpacks and bus tickets; upon arrival, though, it became clear that pinching pennies was not on everyone's agenda.

The first few days in Florence were comparable to a freshman welcome week. The time was full of activities, including hikes, dinners, and other various ventures to get students to meet one another. My roommates and I attended one of the dinners to make connections before classes began.

Standing among groups of strangers , I expected to converse about majors and hometowns; however, I witnessed a quiet competition between students on who would be going to the most places in the coming months.

Comments such as "I have every weekend planned and booked" or "I would go, but I've already been" were stacked on top of one another as my peers attempted to one-up each other. At this time, I had a total of zero trips planned. When caught in these conversations, I felt oddly pressured to also fill my calendar each weekend, accompanied by the feeling of stress due to not being able to afford travel every five days. I feared I would be left behind.

I've been here for over two months, and this conversation hasn't ended. Every Monday, I hear whispers about where my peers had jet-setted to days before. Places like Dubai and Morocco have been mentioned, leaving me just as shocked as that first dinner. I knew studying abroad was a privilege before getting here, but "a weekend in Dubai " was not what I expected.

Nobody is 'roughing it' like I thought they would be

My spring break was only three weeks into the start of the semester, and this was when I decided to take my first trip. When booking, I scoured sites, such as KAYAK and Skyscanner, but plane tickets and hotels were still extremely pricey. Eventually, my roommates and I decided to spend five days in Prague after finding affordable tickets on Ryanair. One of the greatest appeals of Prague was it was walkable, cheap, and had a good nightlife — my top three requirements as a traveling college student.

My three roommates and I booked a studio apartment for around $100 each for a total of five nights. It took us two trains, one bus, a plane, and some walking to get there, but the price was right. I was excited for the following week and felt satisfied with our trip and housing accommodations.

That was until I scrolled through Instagram to see my peers skiing in the Alps and skydiving in Copenhagen. It was almost unbelievable that the people I attend classes with could afford this style of travel while my school backpack was stuffed with a week's worth of clothes cause I opted out of the carry-on baggage fee Ryanair required.

I thought everyone at this stage made sacrifices when traveling, but I was mostly wrong.

I'm convinced people are traveling for the sake of their Instagram

I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that anyone can experience a new country in the span of 48 hours.

I do know, however, that people are really good at making their time away look like the best time ever on my Instagram feed . It's as if they're collecting comments like postcards or putting another notch in their belts by showing one another how many stamps they have accumulated in their passports.

Traveling while studying abroad is a competitive sport with a large price tag that no one told me to train for.

I've learned that such comparisons defeat the purpose of traveling. Maybe I haven't flown on the best airlines or stayed in an oceanfront villa, but my experiences abroad have been enriching and allowed me to engage with other cultures. Best of all? I didn't have to spend much money, and my Instagram still looks good.
