Keep in touch with someone at Manchester Prison

There are several ways you can keep in touch with a prisoner during their time at Manchester Prison.

Secure video calls

To have a secure video call with someone in this prison you need to:

  • Download the Prison Video app
  • Create an account
  • Register all visitors
  • Add the prisoner to your contact list.

How to book a secure video call

Secure video calls at this prison can be requested by prisoners only.

You will receive a notification if a prisoner has requested a video call with you.

Read more about how it works

Phone calls

Prisoners have phones in their cells which they can use between 8am and 10pm.

The phones do not accept incoming calls so prisoners will always have to call you. They have to buy phone credits to do this.

They can phone anyone named on their list of friends and family. This list is checked by security when they first arrive so it may take a few days before they are able to call.

You can also exchange voicemails using the Prison Voicemail service .

Officers may listen to phone calls as a way of preventing crime and helping keep people safe.

You can send emails to someone in Manchester Prison using the Email a Prisoner service .

You might also be able to attach photos and receive replies from the prisoner, depending on the rules at Manchester Prison.

You can write at any time.

Include the person’s name and prisoner number on the envelope.

If you do not know their prisoner number, contact Manchester Prison .

All post, apart from legal letters, will be opened and checked by officers.

Send money and gifts

You can use the free and fast online service to send money to someone in prison .

You can no longer send money by bank transfer, cheque, postal order or send cash by post.

If you cannot use the online service, you may be able to apply for an exemption - for example if you:

  • are unable to use a computer, a smart phone or the internet
  • do not have a debit card

This will allow you to send money by post.

Gifts and parcels

You can no longer send gifts or parcels via the visitor’s centre. We can only accept gifts or parcels from family members via the Birthday Parcel process.

It’s not possible to send items or property by post. You can send prisoners money instead which they can use to buy items through a catalogue system.

Family and friends of prisoners are permitted to send books directly to their loved ones, or can order books from approved retailers, which can source and send the books on to prisoners.   For the full list of approved retailers, you can read the HMPPS Incentives Policy, Annex F .

Manchester Federal Correctional Institution is a medium security prison with a local minimum security satellite camp. FCI Manchester is located on a 240 acre lot, where approximately 39 of these acres are encompassed by a perimeter fence.  Although construction of the facility began in 1989, the prison didn't open until December of 1992.  Located in Manchester of Clay County, Kentucky, FCI Manchester currently houses 1,117 male offenders.  Out of the 1,117 inmates, 913 are placed within the FCI and 204 at the camp.  The facilities altogether have been designed to hold a total of 1,272 prisoners.  To house the inmates, there are 4 housing units at the FCI and 2 at the Camp.  The housing units at the FCI are divided into double tiered pods with 2 beds in each cell.  Each pod houses 126 prisoners.  There is also a Special Housing Unit at the FCI which is separate from the other 4 general housing units.  The SHU has 47 beds.  The Camp has two separate floors for each housing unit.  Each floor houses 128 prisoners among cubicles, where each cubicle contains 2 beds.

Notable inmates include former Missouri State Senator Jeff Smith (who served eight months for obstruction of justice) and computer hacker Jeremy Hammond (convicted of conspiracy).

Inmates live in two-person cells within the eight housing units. The camp houses inmates in dormitories that are divided into two-person cubicles. While the camp has four dormitories, two have been closed down.

FCI Manchester Prison Culture Information

Manchester federal prison is a somewhat political yard. Inmates are required to be part of a car.

Violence is minimal at the Manchester, KY prison.

Sex offenders may not be allowed to walk the yard.

“Quantity and quality of food; good dessert (e.g., ice cream, popsicles, etc.).”

“Politics, stormy weather, and lots of fog counts.”

“Sex offenders wouldn’t do well here.”

Prison Politics at Manchester Prison Camp

Due to being a Camp, there are virtually no politics. One respondent said the facility is “not political at all.”

There is a very low level of violence. One inmate explained, “There is no violence; it is very safe.” Another respondent agreed, stating, “There is just a bunch of talk but no action.”

While informants and LGBT inmates can walk the yard, sex offenders are precluded from Camp placement by Bureau of Prisons policy.

“The wildlife. There are skunks, foxes, cats, dogs, raccoons, deer, and turkeys.” “The COs are fairly friendly and not aggressive.”

“It’s a good facility, though a bit boring.” “Very green and outdoors.” “We call it a ‘daddy daycare.’“

In February 2018, a new program was announced that allows criminal justice students from Eastern Kentucky University and prisoners at Federal Correctional Institution Manchester to take a college course together in a prison environment.

HMP Manchester has a capacity of 1,238 and opened in 1868. Although its official name is HMP Manchester, most people still refer to it by its original title of Strangeways. The name ‘Strangeways’ comes from the area in which the prison is constructed and the building itself is now Grade II listed. The establishment is a local prison serving the Greater Manchester area, which also holds category A adult male prisoners.

The 1990 Strangeways Riot still remains one of the most famous incidents in UK prison history. On the 1 st April, prisoners seized control of the prison chapel, before climbing to the rooftop in protest. The rioting continued for 25 days in total – making it the longest riot on record

Robinho arrested to begin serving nine-year prison sentence for rape

Brazil's forward Robinho eyes the ball during the 2015 Copa America football championship match against Venezuela, in Santiago, on June 21, 2015. AFP PHOTO / LUIS ACOSTA (Photo credit should read LUIS ACOSTA/AFP via Getty Images)

Former Manchester City and Real Madrid forward Robinho has been arrested in Brazil to begin serving a nine-year prison sentence for rape.

An Italian court found the 40-year-old guilty, alongside five other Brazilians, of a group sexual assault of a woman back in 2013 while he was at AC Milan .

A hearing of judges at Brazil’s superior court of justice ruled on Wednesday that the decision made in Italy was also valid in the South American country.

Brazil does not extradite its nationals leading Italy to seek for him to serve his sentence in his home country.

“There’s no obstacle to validate the execution of his sentence,” judge Francisco Falco said.

“It was confirmed by a court in Milan, which is the competent authority in this case. The conviction is final. The defendant was not put on trial in absence in Italy, he had representation.”

Local media reported that Robinho was taken from his Santos home on Thursday to spend his first few hours in custody after being denied a habeas corpus request to remain free pending appeals.

He is expected to subsequently be transferred to an as yet unspecified penitentiary.

Robinho has always denied any wrongdoing and once again maintained his innocence in an interview broadcast by local television on Sunday.

“I was unfairly convicted in Italy for something that did not occur,” he said.

Robinho, who retired in 2020, made over 600 club appearances for clubs including Real Madrid, Manchester City and Milan.

He also scored 28 goals in 100 appearances for the Brazil national team.

Trump has been unable to get bond for $464 million judgment, his lawyers say

Former President Donald Trump has not been able to get a bond to secure the $464 million civil fraud judgment against him and his co-defendants, his lawyers said in a court filing Monday.

Trump and his company need to post a bond for the full amount by next week in order to stop New York Attorney General Letitia James from being able to collect while he appeals . They've asked an appeals court to step in in the meantime and said Monday that they have not had any success getting a bond.

"Defendants’ ongoing diligent efforts have proven that a bond in the judgment’s full amount is 'a practical impossibility,'" the filing said. "These diligent efforts have included approaching about 30 surety companies through 4 separate brokers."

Donald Trump during a "Get Out The Vote" rally in Rome, Ga.

Their efforts, including “countless hours negotiating with one of the largest insurance companies in the world,” have proven that “obtaining an appeal bond in the full amount” of the judgment “is not possible under the circumstances presented,” the filing said.

The other bond companies will not “accept hard assets such as real estate as collateral,” but “will only accept cash or cash equivalents (such as marketable securities),” the filing said. The lawyers also noted those companies typically “require collateral of approximately 120% of the amount of the judgment” — which would total about $557 million.

"In addition, sureties would likely charge bond premiums of approximately 2 percent per year with two years in advance—an upfront cost over $18 million," the filing said. That $18 million would not be recoverable even if Trump wins his appeal.

In all, the filing said, the "actual amount of cash or cash equivalents required 'to collateralize the bond and have sufficient capital to run the business and satisfy its other obligations' approach[es] $1 billion."

While the filing says Trump can't afford the bond, it also argues that the attorney general doesn't have to worry about being able to collect her judgment.

"Defendants’ real estate holdings — including iconic properties like 40 Wall Street, Doral Miami, and Mar-a-Lago, — greatly exceed the amount of the judgment. Such assets are impossible to secrete or dispose of surreptitiously, leaving the plaintiff effectively secured during the pendency of an appeal," the filing said.

Trump's team also argued the $464 million penalty is "grossly disproportional" and cited the argument they made throughout the monthslong trial that "there are no victims, as there were no damages and no financial losses."

In a filing last month, Trump's lawyers asked that the bond amount be reduced to $100 million, but Monday's filing argues he shouldn't have to put up any bond at all.

James' office has argued that Trump should put up the full amount.

A 30-day automatic stay of the judgment handed down by Judge Arthur Engoron is set to expire March 25, at which point James would be clear to start seizing Trump's assets unless the appeals court steps in.

James would not need an additional court order to start collecting in New York, where Trump has his company and a large number of real estate assets, but those efforts could be complicated by any mortgages or debts he has on those properties. It’s unclear what properties or assets James might look to seize.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump's campaign, said in a statement that the judgment is "unjust, unconstitutional" and "un-American."

"A bond of this size would be an abuse of the law," he said.

Trump asked that if the state Appellate Division denies his request, the judges enter a temporary stay so he can try to make his case to the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals.

Engoron handed down his judgment last month after finding Trump and his company had repeatedly committed fraud by overinflating personal financial statements that he used to secure bank loans and insurance policies. James' office said there were years when Trump's assets were overvalued by more than $2 billion.

Trump maintained he did nothing wrong and testified that, if anything, his properties were undervalued.

The judge hit Trump and his co-defendants with a judgment saying they had to pay over $350 million — an amount that ballooned to $464 million with pre-judgment interest. Of that amount on the date the judgment was entered, the vast majority, or about $454 million, was against Trump and his companies.

That amount has grown since — the judgment against Trump will increase at a daily rate of nearly $112,000 until it’s paid off because of interest on the penalty, according to the attorney general’s office.

The filing Monday seeking to freeze the entire $464 million was filed on behalf of Trump and his co-defendants, including his sons Don Jr. and Eric, who've been running the Trump Organization since their father first went to the White House.

In a separate case in New York federal court, Trump last week posted a $91 million bond to secure writer E. Jean Carroll's $83 million defamation judgment against him while he appeals that verdict as well.
