18 Road Trip Tips for a Smooth Journey

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited for the resurgence of the road trip. When the pandemic hit, driving became a necessity. But I like to think it also reminded people about how freeing hittin’ the open road can be! Whether you’re bundling up your family into the backseat, taking a nice, long solo drive, or getting your best friend or two for a girls’ getaway – there’s so much opportunity in driving!

If you’re thinking of planning a road trip this year, here are some of my best tips for a smooth journey that will actually be fun.

My Tried and True Road Trip Tips

1. Keep your road trip manageable. 

The beauty of road trips is that the only real limit is the ocean. Want to drive from Bar Harbor, Maine all the way to San Diego, California? Technically, you can. However, that will be a long, long time in a car. About 48 hours and close to 3,300 miles to be more specific.

The key to making a road trip fun is to make sure it’s manageable. Consider how much time you have and how long you realistically can be in a car before you get too fatigued to do much else. Then plan out your route from there. 

2. Plan to drive no more than 2-3 hours a day.

As a rule of thumb, I like to limit driving on a road trip to 2-3 hours a day, no more than 4 hours. I find that any longer, I’m not going to have a lot of time to do anything but drive. Plus I’ll be achy and tired by the time I reach my destination for the night. Remember – this road trip should be fun, not just about getting from Point A – B.

3. Make sure everything related to your car is up to date.

This should be a no brainer but is especially important before a road trip. Does your car need an inspection? An oil change? How’s the tire pressure? Do you have enough windshield wiper fluid? Do you have a spare tire and is it properly inflated?

And, of course, don’t forget to make sure your car insurance is current!

For those renting a car, make sure someone goes through everything with you and you have all the necessary information for emergencies. Don’t forget to also take video and photo yourself in case the rental company tries to pull a fast one on you later.

4. Pack a roadside emergency kit.

No matter what season you’re planning your road trip in, you’re going to want some sort of roadside emergency kit in your trunk. ( Winter road trips  will, of course, require a few extra seasonal items.) You can buy plenty of premade emergency kits online, but if you want to make your own, here are some key basics:

• A car jack and lug wrench that fits your car. Don’t forget to brush up on exactly how to use it to replace your tire.
• Jumper cables
• A heavy duty flashlight. Better yet get a headlamp as well so you can keep your hands free. Also – extra batteries!
• A general first aid kit. 
• Reflective clothing or a warning triangle so drivers can see you in darker conditions.
• Paper towels.
• Work gloves

5. Organize where you’re going to stay each night ahead of time.

While you could play things by ear, I tend to like pre-planning where I’m staying each night of the road trip. It gives some structure to your trip and is one less thing to worry about while on the road. 

If you do want to play it by ear or wind up having to stay somewhere else unexpectedly, make sure you download the HotelTonight app . I’ve had this app on my phone forever. It’s been a lifesaver for those moments where I just quickly want to see the best five hotels nearby in my price point, not hundreds of options. 

6. Make note of parking at each place you stay.

Another thing you’ll want to pre-plan is where exactly you’re going to park each night. Start with asking your hotel. Most hotels in smaller cities and towns will have free parking either right on the property or nearby. In bigger cities, I’ve found they’ll tell you their nightly rates but also offer some alternative suggestions for street parking and parking garages.

When all else fails, download the Spothero app to reserve ahead of time.

7. Take time to look up major landmarks or quirky stops along the way. 

Either beforehand or the evening before your drive, take a few minutes to look up potential sightseeing spots along the way. In the US Midwest especially, there are a ton of quirky spots worth checking out. On our Illinois Route 66 road trip , we stayed in a small town solely dedicated to arcade games! 

8. iExit is my ultimate secret weapon.

One of the ways you can look up these quirky spots is by using one of my favorite apps, iExit . This app will let you know about all the stops off an upcoming exit from restaurants to landmarks to gas stations. It’s especially great for figuring out where to eat and where to stop for the bathroom. After all, the next exit may have a typical fast food franchise but if you can make it an extra 10 miles to the exit after, you may find a cool, local diner. Or maybe you’re looking at rest stop or gas station bathrooms but if everyone can hold it for another 15 minutes, the following exit will have a proper Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts where everyone can pee and get a treat at the same time.

9. ALWAYS make time for National and State Parks.

One thing I’ll always make time for on a drive are national and state parks. Each country has their own giant list of national parks, and I find it’s always worth at least stopping in. You may even want to plan a whole day or two around some of them. There’s a very good reason these places have their designation whether it’s breathtaking landscapes or historic significance. 

In the US, other NPS parks might also be labeled as wildlife refuges, historic sites, monuments, and more.

10. Use AllTrails to look for trails along the way.

One of the key things to do on a road trip is to always make sure you take time to stretch your legs. Whether it’s just going for a 20-30 minute walk or planning a hike in a national park, trust me – make sure you move each day of the trip.

I like using the AllTrails app to find trails. It allows you to sort by difficulty and read through comments to see the most up-to-date trail information. If you pay for the app, you’ll be able to download trail maps ahead of time.

11. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation at your various pit stops.

Wherever you go, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with fellow visitors and locals. Obviously, keep safety in mind, so don’t reveal everything about your trip (and if you’re alone – don’t let anyone know you’re actually alone). But I’ve found that one of the best parts of a road trip is the ability to just meet all sorts of people! You’re not in a rush to catch a train or plane, so you can meander and just chat away. Not only is it fun, you never know what lesser known tips and insight you’ll get.

12. Have a paper map or paper directions just in case.

Maybe this makes me sound old, but even with all our navigation technology, I still feel better having some sort of paper map or printed out directions in my dashboard. You just never know! Sometimes phones can overheat and turn off for a good 15-20 minutes. Maybe you have an older phone where the battery doesn’t hold a charge even plugged in. I’ve even found that plenty of popular parks have absolutely no cell service at all, so if you exit out of your navigation you won’t be able to get a connection.

Regardless – just have an old school paper map or head over to MapQuest and print out directions like the olden days. (Yes, MapQuest still exists!)

13. Pre-download playlists, audiobooks, and podcasts.

Back to the potential lack of cell service, make sure you pre-download any playlists, podcasts , or audiobooks for your drive. Nothing is quite as frustrating as realizing you’re in a deadzone so the next song won’t load, the radio stations are all fuzzy, and all you have is silence.

14. Watch your speed.

Goes without saying – watch your speed! Many countries are a lot stricter with their speed limits and even going 10km (6miles) over may result in a ticket. Many places both in the US and abroad also use cameras, so you won’t know you’ve gotten a ticket until much later when it arrives in the mail. Not a fun surprise!

15. Don’t be afraid of getting a catnap at a gas station or rest stop if you didn’t sleep well enough the night before.

Another obvious road trip tip is get enough sleep every night. It’s pretty dangerous to drive when you’re exhausted. However, if you do have a poor night’s rest, don’t be afraid to look for gas stations, fast food restaurants, or rest stops. Really anything with a parking lot where you can stay for 30+ minutes, put your seat back, and get a cat nap in. Wear your sunglasses and put a T-shirt over your eyes for extra darkness if you’re stopping in the middle of a sunny day. 

Trust me – that 30 minute cat nap will do wonders !

16. Keep enough snacks, water, and gum in your car.

Always keep enough snacks, water, and gum in your car. I always get hungry while driving and, of course, you’re likely not finding too many healthy meals on the road. It’s good to have some veggies, fruit, and nuts on hand to stay balanced. Water, of course, is a no brainer – we all need to stay hydrated. I would say this is where those big Stanley or Owala cups come in handy since you can store 30 ounces. For extra hydration, look into adding nuun tablets or liquid IV to your drink. This’ll also help cut down on bathroom breaks.

17. Do NOT forget to apply sunscreen – especially to your face and the backs of your hands and arms.

Despite being inside your car, your face and hands will absolutely be exposed to the sun when driving. Think about how your hands are often resting on the steering wheel right under the front window. We’re all pretty good at remembering to put sunscreen on our faces, but when was the last time you remember specifically putting sunscreen on the back of your hands?

18. Remember – road trips are about the journey, not necessarily the destination! Give yourself wiggle room.

My ultimate road trip tip is to give yourself time. They say travel is about the journey, not the destination, and I’d say that’s especially true for road trips. The key is to enjoy the journey, so give yourself plenty of wiggle room to explore and discover. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve randomly seen one of those blue signs advertising a random attraction and wished I’d had time to pull over and check it all out. 

It’s better to enjoy a slower road trip than to rush through and realize all you saw was pavement and gas stations the whole time!

There are many ways to do a cross-country road trip in the USA, but these two itineraries will take you through some truly iconic American places.

1. Chicago to Los Angeles: A Whiskey Road Trip on Route 66

It doesn’t get more American than a 2,000-mile drive along the entirety of Route 66. There are endless ways to take this legendary trip (including an EV version —but to take your cross-country road trip to the next level, we recommend exploring another American pastime: whiskey.

Starting in Chicago and ending in L.A., you’ll stop by some of the leading craft distilleries in the United States, like Few Spirits in Chicago, Still 630 in St. Louis, and Red Fork Distillery in Tulsa. In between tastings, make time for detours to natural attractions, like the Grand Canyon, and quirky roadside curiosities, like Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. Just remember to drink responsibly—this is a road trip after all.

2. Bangor, Maine, to Seattle, Washington: The Great Northern on U.S. Route 2

Covering both the U.S. and Canada, a cross-country trip along U.S. 2 is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the vast diversity and expansiveness of North America. This drive runs the entire top border of the U.S. and showcases otherworldly natural wonders like Acadia National Park in Maine, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, and Mackinac Island in Michigan. 18. Maine’s “Lobster Trail”: Travel Route 1 Along the Coast

Traveling Route 1, affectionately known as “the lobster trail,” along Maine’s jagged coastline is an exercise in indulgence. Sample lobster dishes in all forms—buttered, steamed, on a roll, or even in a decadent mac-and-cheese.

21. The Florida Keys: An Island-Hopping Getaway

For a sunny road trip itinerary in Florida, skip Miami and head farther south. Beginning in Key Largo and ending in Key West, the Florida Keys Scenic Highway is often overlooked for more well-known routes up north, but it is well worth going out of your way to experience.

As the name suggests, this route is very scenic, so plan to spend at least a few days exploring it and numerous stops along the way. Some highlights include driving across the impressive Overseas Highway, stopping to admire art in the town of Islamorada, and enjoying the historic sites, food, and (of course) beaches in the city of Key West.

Use the verbs “take” and “go on” with trip .

• A round-trip ticket is a ticket for going and coming back.

Travel (n.) can be used to describe the act of traveling in general:

Incorrect uses of travel :

Journey (n.)

One piece of travel (going from one place to another) – usually a long distance.

• The journey takes 3 hours by plane or 28 hours by bus.
• He made the 200-mile journey by bike.
• “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step” – Lao-tze,  Tao Te Ching

We can also use journey in a more “metaphorical” way to talk about progress in life:

• He has overcome a lot of problems on his spiritual journey.

Travel packing’s always exciting.

You’re finally getting ready for the road!

But that doesn’t make it easy.

It’s taken me years to figure out the key things to take on a trip!

That’s why I’ve put this comprehensive travel checklist together.

This long list of essential things to pack for travelling should help you decide what to take and what to leave.

…FYI, I’ve tried to include all the key things to bring when travelling, regardless of where you’re going or what you’re doing . Pick and choose from the list to suit your personal needs!

What to Take On a Trip: 80 Essential Things to Bring When Travelling

The basics (& what to pack in your carry-on).

Let’s begin with basic things to take travelling. The following items are fundamental to any trip and, in general, are all good things to pack in your carry-on as well!

Check them out:

1. Passport

There’s nothing worse than getting to the airport and realizing you left your passport at home! Check and double-check that you’ve got it in your bag before you leave.

2. Key documentation

Certain key documents will be important to take along as well.

Think about printing your travel itinerary, flight confirmation, visa details, and a copy of your passport (just in case you lose the actual one and need to arrange a replacement while travelling).

3. Mobile phone

Smartphones come in handy at every turn when you’re travelling. From contacting loved ones to navigating around a new place, it’s worth having one in your pocket. Don’t fancy taking your normal phone on the road?

You could buy yourself a cheap alternative to use instead. That way it won’t matter too much if it gets lost, damaged, or stolen.

4. Laptop/tablet

A laptop will be essential for anybody who wants to work online while they travel.

For everyone else, though, I’d think twice about taking one.

Carrying expensive and fragile kit on the road is never fun! You know it could get damaged, lost, or stolen, which makes it harder to relax when you’re on the move.

5. Glasses/contact lenses

Travel items don’t get much more essential than glasses and contact lenses! If you need them to see properly, then you need them on the road.

6. Wallet/Purse

Don’t forget your wallet! It’s another key thing to carry on your person at all times.

7. Bank cards & cash (local currency)

Of course, that wallet should also have the necessary bank cards and cash inside!

My advice? Convert some local currency ahead of time and take it along. You’ll avoid the hassle (and expense) of doing it at the airport upon arrival.

8. Emergency cash

You never know when something’s going to go wrong when you’re travelling by yourself on the other side of the world.

Imagine having your wallet, money, and mobile stolen! Having a little stash of emergency cash pocketed away somewhere in your backpack could get you out of a very sticky situation.

9. Charger(s)

Taking a smartphone, laptop, and any other electronic item’s all well and good. But they won’t last long without their chargers.

Don’t forget to stick them in your backpack to avoid disappointment down the line.

10. Travel adaptor

Those chargers will be useless if you don’t have the right travel adaptor to plug them into first!

Research the power outlets of your chosen destination and bag yourself an appropriate adaptor ahead of time. The ‘universal’ ones are usually best- they come with all the necessary fixtures to function in a wide array of outlets.

Make sure you have every single thing to pack for vacation that you need!

Your smartphone camera might be good enough for what you need.

However, any budding photographers out there are sure to appreciate having a ‘proper’ camera with which to capture the experience.

12. Spare memory card(s)

I’m always amazed at how many photos I end up taking on a trip. Having a spare memory card or two will make sure you never run out of space.

You can snap away until your heart’s content, recording every aspect of the adventure without having to delete files as you go.

13. Travel pillow

Anybody who struggles to sleep on the plane (or in tents, or on uncomfortable hostel beds) could benefit from a travel pillow.

The inflatable ones are great for providing decent comfort without taking up space in your backpack.

14. Headphones

Listening to music is an awesome way to pass the time on long journeys or drown out the noise when you want some peace in busy environments.

Assuming they’re compatible with your mobile, having some headphones also means you can watch Netflix on your phone without disturbing the people around you!

15. Books (or Kindle)

I always stick a good book in my backpack too. Like listening to music, it’s great for passing the time and chilling out at the end of (or during) a chaotic day on the road. Want my advice?

Consider getting a Kindle instead ! You’ll enjoy unlimited reading opportunities without the space and weight issues that come from ordinary books.

16. Guidebook

A guidebook is sure to come in handy too. It’ll help you plan the trip, learn more about your chosen destination, and figure out your itinerary.

17. Journal and pen(s)

Not everybody keeps a journal on their travels. But I definitely recommend it! Keeping a record of your adventures is the best way I know to truly fix the experience in memory.

You’ll be able to look back on your trip in due course and relive what you did in vivid detail. These travel journal prompts should help you get started.

18. Daypack

Most travellers have their main pack on their back and a smaller daypack to take exploring on a day to day basis.

It saves you lugging everything around when you’re sightseeing. Don’t forget it!

19. Sunglasses

With any luck, you’ll have perfect weather and a boat-load of sunshine wherever you go travelling. Save yourself the squinting by remembering to pack your sunglasses!

20. Reusable water bottle

Reusable water bottles come in handy too.

You can refill it wherever you go, stay hydrated, and cut down on the number of plastic bottles you buy in the process.

21. Snacks for the journey

Slip some of your favourite snacks into your travel pack as well. They’ll be a lifesaver when you get the munchies mid-way through the flight!

No packing list is complete without clothing! Here are all the clothes to pack for your trip.

Onto the clothes. Here’s all the clothing you should remember to pack when you go travelling.

Just remember, less is more! Try to limit the amount of clothes you carry in order to save space and cut down on weight.

22. Underwear

First thing’s first: undies. Boxers, briefs, panties, thongs, and bras…Whatever you wear, be sure to pack enough pairs.

Pop some socks in too! Just don’t take too many. You’d be surprised at how much space these tootsie-covers take up. My top sock-related tip?

Ball them up and cram them into the footwear you plan to take. That should help save some space.

24. Clothes to sleep in

Can’t bear the thought of sleeping without your usual pyjamas? Pop those in your backpack too! For everyone else, your undies should suffice.

Jeans are thick, heavy, and generally quite impractical when you’re travelling. But they’re versatile and look nice too, so I always take some along anyway.

26. Comfy, practical trousers

Take some more practical trousers (or pants, depending on where you’re from) as well, such as hiking trousers or tracksuit bottoms. They’ll be better-suited (and comfier) than jeans to being on the move, on the trail, or exploring when the temperature drops.

If the weather’s good, then you’ll want some travel shorts to keep you cool. I take one pair of practical shorts (suitable for hiking) and another ‘trendy’ pair for going out in.

28. T-shirts

You’ll need a few of your favourite t-shirts too! There’s no magic number here.

I take around 6 or 7 t-shirts with me and ensure they all match whatever I wear on my bottom half. That way, they all get worn and it doesn’t matter which one I pull out of my backpack each day.

29. Dress shirts

Dress shirts are bigger, heavier, and less practical all-around compared to t-shirts.

That’s why I recommend limiting yourself to just one of them. You’re covered on the odd occasion you need to dress up, without taking up too much space in your pack.

30. Swimsuit

Don’t fancy non-stop skinny dipping? Make sure you pack your swimmers!

Don’t forget the weather when putting together the things to pack for a trip. Hot or cold, you need the right clothing for the job.

31. Hoodie/sweaters

Even the warmest countries in the world can get a bit nippy sometimes. Have a sweater or hoodie packed away, just in case the temperature drops. Heading to cooler climates? Take a couple!

32. Warmer jacket

A warm jacket will only be essential for people travelling long term and/or heading to colder countries. If you know the temperature can dip to uncomfortable levels, then a warm jacket can definitely be a useful addition to your backpack.

33. Waterproof jacket

I think a good waterproof jacket is 100% essential for any adventure. You never know when the heavens are going to open! Having a waterproof can make a mighty difference.

34. Sun hat

Stick a sun hat in your backpack too! It’ll keep the sun off your face and/or neck, stopping sunburn and sunstroke from ruining your trip.

Do you usually wear a belt? Well, don’t forget to take one along on your travels.

It’s also worth pointing out that travel has a habit of changing your eating patterns and boosting your activity levels. In some cases, that could mean you lose some weight. Having that belt could come in handy even if you don’t normally wear one!

36. Walking shoes

Good, solid, comfortable walking shoes are arguably some of the most important items to take travelling.

They stop your feet from getting sore as you explore new places, keep them dry whenever you hit the trail or it starts to rain, and offer valuable support for your ankles.

37. Trainers

The only trouble with walking shoes is that they tend to be bigger and heavier than standard footwear.

If you’re short on space and don’t want to wear walking shoes all the time, then look into taking some trainers/sneakers instead! They versatile things to take for a trip, regardless where you’re going.

38. Sandals/flip flops

A good-quality pair of flip-flops or sandals will always get good use on your travels too. They’re small, lightweight, and versatile- the perfect combination when you’re backpacking.

39. Jewellery

I’d think twice about taking lots of valuable jewellery on the road. After all, it’s expensive, shiny, and sentimental. In other words, it’s the last thing you’d want to lose, break, or have stolen.

Nevertheless, jewellery’s essential kit for some people, though, who, among other things, wear it to accessorize outfits, feel a sense of connection to home, or as good luck charms.

40. Laundry bag

There’s nothing worse than having a backpack full of loose, dirty clothes.

Leave it too long and everything starts to smell. Having a laundry bag stops that happening, keeps your dirty washing in one place, and makes everything feel more organized in general.

41. Travel towel

Travel towels get a tonne of use when you’re on the road! Small, lightweight, and quick-drying, they’re the perfect addition to your backpack.

43. Medication(s)

One thing you don’t want to forget is any medication you take. Make sure you pack it (and ensure you have enough for your trip).

Of course, painkillers and antihistamines can also come in handy.

44. Toothbrush

It’s never fun when you get to your destination after a long journey and realize you forgot your toothbrush! Be sure to pack a toothbrush.

45. Toothpaste

It’s no good remembering your toothbrush if you forget the toothpaste! Be sure to pack that too.

46. Dental floss

Sling in some dental floss while you’re at it. Remember, you could be travelling for months at a time without seeing a dentist. Flossing your teeth each night should keep your gnashers in good shape.

47. Deodorant

Exploring new places (especially in warm weather) can be hot, sweaty work. Having some deodorant with you should ensure you stay sweet-smelling regardless!

Some people take shower gel with them when they travel. But I prefer soap. It’s one less liquid to worry about exploding in your backpack and it should last longer on the road too.

49. Shampoo (and conditioner?)

You’ll be wanting to wash your hair along the way as well! Now, you can always get some shampoo/conditioner on the road, but you’ll have a much better selection if you buy it beforehand.

Small travel-sized bottles are better if you want the liquid variety.

However, it’s well worth looking into solid shampoos . They’re easier to travel with, have less risk of spilling, and work just as effectively.

50. Hairstyling stuff

Anybody who wants to style their hair should take their favourite hair product(s) too. Wax, gel, clay, or spray- take your pick and put it in your backpack. Just make sure it’s under 100ml if you want to put it in your carry-on.

Cameras are definite essentials for packing lists- no matter where you’re going! And so are hairbrushes…

51. Hairbrush

Want to stop your hair getting all knotted and gross on the road? Don’t forget your hairbrush!

52. Moisturizer

If you’re used to moisturizing at home every day, then you’ll want to take some on your travels as well. Pour some into a smaller bottle if you’ve got limited space in your backpack.

I can’t say this is something I need when I go travelling! But anybody who wants to wear makeup while travelling should pack the essential bits and pieces they need.

54. Sunscreen (and aftersun?)

Sunscreen is 100% essential when you’re travelling in hot, sunny places. Sunburn and sunstroke will sap the enjoyment from your day like nothing else. Slap on the factor 50 to keep your skin protected at all times!

55. Lip balm

Lip balm’s one of those items that’s always good to have available. It’ll stop your lips chapping and cracking and causing you discomfort on your trip.

56. Nail clippers

Nail clippers are another must-have item that’s never fun to forget. Slip them into your travel toiletry bag so you can keep your nails in check on your travels.

57. Razor & Shaving Foam

Unless you want to come back from travelling looking like Chewbacca, make sure you take a razor and shaving foam with you too.

58. Tweezers

You might as well bring some tweezers along too. They’re super small and come in handy whether you’re plucking splinters from your fingers or hairs from your mono-brow!

59. Earplugs

Earplugs are, in my opinion, 100% essential items. You’ll thank your lucky stars you remembered them when you find yourself in a hostel dorm room with a chronic snorer.

You can put them in, drown them out, and, with a bit of luck, get a better night’s sleep.

60. Birth control

Definitely don’t forget your birth control! You want to make sure you’ve covered just in case any travel romances arise on the road.

Miscellaneous and Outdoor Items to Take On a Trip

Let’s finish with the outdoor items that’d be ideal for anybody planning on hiking, camping, or venturing into the great outdoors on their travels.

61. Hammock

Okay, so it might not be strictly essential . But I always take a hammock with me anyway when I go travelling! Honestly, nothing compares to finding an epic place to sling it up and sway away.

Travelling with a tent strapped to your backpack is epic! For one thing, camping’s always fun. But having a tent also means you always have somewhere to sleep (assuming you can find somewhere to pitch it!).

Of course, it’s a fundamental bit of kit if you’re going on a camping or hiking trip. Just try to make sure you take one that’s small and lightweight enough to justify carrying. Anything too big or heavy will be a nightmare to lug around if you aren’t using it too much.

63. Backpacking knife

Carrying a backpacking knife is useful for any number of reasons- especially when you’re hiking and camping along the way. Chopping firewood, opening packages, and preparing meals are just a few of the occasions they come in handy.

64. Travel torch/flashlight

Make sure you take a travel torch with you too.

They’re vital for anybody who wants to spend nights out in the great outdoors, explore cave systems, take late night walks, or light up the hostel dorm room (without turning on the main light and waking everybody up)!

65. Padlock

Padlocks are great when you’re staying somewhere that seems at all dodgy. There should be lockers available where you can safely stow your things and keep your belongings safe.

66. Backpack rain cover

Getting caught in a downpour is never fun when you’re backpacking. But it’s even worse when you don’t have anything with which to keep your backpack dry. Everything inside, including your clothes and electronics, will get soaked- and potentially ruined.

Taking a separate backpack rain cover (unless your pack already has one) will help you avoid that kind of outcome!

67. Camping stove (and gas)

Want to cook some grub when you’re hiking, camping, or in need of a warm meal on the road? A small camping stove will be perfect for the job. Just make sure you have some gas with it too.

68. Lighter

Camp cooking becomes a challenge without a lighter (or matches) at your disposal. Make sure you slip one (with plenty of gas in it) into your backpack.

69. Sleeping bag

Sleeping bags are another staple of any camping, hiking, or backpacking trip. If you can find yourself a small-ish one to take with you, then it’s sure to come in handy.

Make sure you take a sleeping bag that’s well-suited to the weather conditions you’re heading into though. For cold weather, you’ll need bigger, thicker, bags with higher-quality insulation.

70. Sleeping bag liner

An alternative to a full-blown sleeping bag is to take a liner instead.

They’re much thinner, smaller and lighter, making them ideal for backpackers. Now, you’d be too cold camping with just a liner on all but the warmest nights. However, their value isn’t restricted to nights spent outside!

Liners are also useful whenever you’re sleeping in beds that seem less than hygienic. They provide a nice barrier from any nasties that might be hiding in the sheets.

71. Sleeping/camping mat

Having something to separate your body from the cold hard earth is all-important when you’re camping. It’ll help you stay warm, dry, and more comfortable, ensuring you get a better night’s sleep in the process.

That’s where having a sleeping mat will come in useful. Anybody planning to camp on their travels will benefit from taking one with them!

72. Trekking poles

Planning on hitting the trail on your trip? Well, trekking poles will make your life ten times easier. Grab yourself some lightweight, foldable ones to take along for the ride.

73. Mini First-aid kit

You never know when something’s going to go wrong when you’re travelling! Minor injuries are relatively common. Having a basic (but well-stocked) first-aid kit in your backpack will help.

74. Insect repellent

I hate mosquitos (and all bitey insects, for that matter) with a passion! Unfortunately, you find then in huge numbers in some parts of the world.

Having some effective insect repellent can be a serious lifeline.

75. Spork and reusable straw

Strange as it might sound, I’ve started to travel with a Spork and reusable straw in my daypack. I know, they’re far from essential . But they definitely come in handy a lot when I’m on the road.

It cuts down on the amount of plastic cutlery and straws that I’d use otherwise and ensures I always have something with which to eat and drink when I’m travelling.

76. Powerbank

With all the electronics you’re likely to take with you, another of the best things to take on a trip is a power bank.

Put one in your daypack to carry with you wherever you go. That way, you’ll always have a way to recharge your mobile, watch and/or other electronics on the move.

77. Packing Cubes

I never travel without packing cubes! Why?

Because they’re awesome for keeping everything organized in your backpack or suitcase. Simply roll up your clothes, pop them inside, and zip them up!

You can then grab the packing cube you need instead of hunting for individual items, saving time and effort in the process.

78. Travel Clothesline

Travel clotheslines are another of those things to carry while travelling that you don’t know you need until you hit the road!

They’re far from essential, but they make a big difference when you have wet clothes and nowhere else to hang them – a surprisingly common state of affairs when you travel.

79. Travel Umbrella

Super small and lightweight, travel umbrellas are top additions to your daypack.

You’ll be pleased you have one when you’re out sightseeing and the heavens open!

80. Travel Insurance

Last but not least, don’t forget to organize travel insurance in advance.

You only have to read the horror stories to realize how important it is.

• As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
• Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
• Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options. 

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Google has announced several new features for Google Maps and Google Search aimed at helping people find less carbon-intensive ways of traveling and commuting.

One of the key additions is a new EV filter on google.com/travel, enabling users to locate hotels that offer onsite EV charging facilities. Additionally, numerous updates have been made on Maps to facilitate the discovery of charging stations.

When planning a trip, users will now have access to suggested charging stops, forecasted energy consumption, and more.

Furthermore, in addition to the EV updates, Google Maps will now assist users in finding lower-carbon travel alternatives.

Highlights from Googles Press Release: More sustainable ways to commute & travel:

• Driving alternatives in Google Maps: When people look up driving directions, we’ll soon show a public transit or a walking suggestion next to driving routes, if travel times are comparable and practical (coming to 15+ cities).
• Trains & buses in Google Search: You can now see train schedules & ticket prices directly in Search, for rail travel in 38 countries around the world (including the US), as well as long-distance buses in 15 countries. This is an expansion of an existing feature.
• Train suggestions on Google Flights: In the months ahead, when you’re on Google Flights and there’s a reasonable rail alternative, you’ll see train route suggestions in the flight search results. This builds on similar suggestions we already show in Google Search for flight queries.

Construction to begin on high-speed rail between Vegas and California

Brightline west will make the trip between las vegas and rancho cucamonga in a little over two hours.

Privately owned train company Brightline will break ground next week on a $12 billion high-speed rail project connecting Las Vegas and Southern California.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg will join company leaders and other officials for the start of construction in Las Vegas on Monday, the Department of Transportation confirmed. The ceremony was first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Brightline West benefits from $3 billion in federal funds from President Biden ’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Trains could be running as soon as early 2028, in time for the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Travelers have a lot to look forward to. Electric trains will depart every 45 minutes from a Las Vegas station south of the city’s storied Strip and a Southern California station in Rancho Cucamonga, a Los Angeles suburb about 40 miles east of downtown.

Traveling at up to 186 mph — faster than any other train in the United States — Brightline West trains will make the 218-mile trip in about 2 hours and 10 minutes.

“At long last, we’re building the first high-speed rail project in our nation’s history,” President Biden said of Brightline West in December. “We’ve been talking about this project for decades. Now we’re really getting it done.”

Other high-speed railroads that would carry passengers at 200 mph and faster are in the works in California, Texas and the Pacific Northwest.

Driving between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas takes at least three hours without traffic, according to Google Maps.

“You’ll be sitting there flying by on Brightline looking at all these brake lights on the highway and thinking, ‘It sucks to be you,’” said Jim Mathews, CEO of the Rail Passengers Association , said on Friday. “That’s what it’s going to be like for all those people trying to get from greater Los Angeles to Las Vegas.”

Brightline West trains will run along Interstate 15 for nearly their entire journey. They will make two intermediate stops in California: one in Hesperia and one in Apple Valley.

Travelers coming from Los Angeles will have the option of riding Metrolink , Southern California’s regional rail system, to the Rancho Cucamonga station located near the junction of Interstates 10 and 15. The trip between downtown Los Angeles and Rancho Cucamonga takes at least 50 minutes by car without traffic, or 1 hour and 15 minutes on the train.

Speed won’t be the only reason to ride Brightline West.

Brightline’s Florida operation connecting Miami to Orlando opened in September , giving future customers out West an idea of what to expect. Before Brightline’s debut, Amtrak held a monopoly on intercity passenger rail travel for decades.

Stations are spacious with comfortable areas to sit, bars selling craft cocktails and a lounge for premium passengers. Onboard, travelers enjoy assigned seats and fast WiFi. Attendants come down the aisle serving snacks and drinks throughout the trip.

Brightline told investors that it carried a record 258,307 passengers in March, and that one in three of its trains were nearly full.

Brightline’s strong ridership, though slower than initially promised to investors, makes a strong case for building fast and frequent trains between major U.S. cities such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Brightline West estimates that 6 million people will ride its trains during the first full year of operation, according to a federal environmental assessment . That number is projected to grow to as many as 9.2 million people within a decade.

The company estimates that, without the train, three-quarters of its riders would drive between Southern California and Las Vegas. Another 15 percent would fly, and the balance would not make the trip at all.

When it comes to government planes and political trips, who pays for a president's campaign travel?

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s no simple matter to move the commander in chief from point A to B, and it’s even more complicated when the president is seeking a second term.

President Joe Biden recently spent three days in Pennsylvania , a pivotal state in the 2024 campaign, and he plans to be in Virginia and Florida this coming week. The Democratic incumbent is seeking an edge over Republican Donald Trump as he ramps up his travels around the country.

Here's a look at how much it costs and who pays the bill during the campaign season.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

It's not cheap to fly the president's fleet.

The White House uses Sikorsky helicopters known as Marine One when the president is aboard, as well as custom Boeing 747s that are immediately recognizable as the iconic humpback Air Force One. (Sometimes the president uses a more modest modified 757 if his destination is nearby or if a runway isn't long enough to accommodate the bigger plane.)

Marine One costs between $16,700 and almost $20,000 per hour to operate, according to Pentagon data for the 2022 budget year. Air Force One is even more expensive: roughly $200,000 per hour.

But those figures only scratch the surface of the real cost. There also are military cargo planes that travel ahead of the president to make sure his armored limousines are in place, not to mention the enormous security apparatus that follows the president everywhere.

New aircraft are in the works because the current versions are decades old. Sikorsky is producing 23 updated helicopters to serve as Marine One. Boeing is building two new Air Force One planes , and they are scheduled to be finished by 2028. According to the Pentagon, the planes will come with all enhancements, including “a mission communication system," a “self-defense system” and even “autonomous baggage loading.”

WHO PAYS FOR THE TRAVEL?

When the president flies for political purposes, the campaign is supposed to pay the bill. But during an election year, the line between governing and campaigning can be fuzzy.

For example, Biden held an official event Wednesday in Pittsburgh, where he announced his proposal for higher tariffs on steel imported from China. The event, however, was a not-so-subtle opportunity for the president to rub shoulders with union members who are critical to his reelection, and he jabbed at Trump in his remarks. (At one point Biden joked that the former president was “busy right now,” a reference to the hush money trial that recently got underway in New York.)

It's up to the White House counsel's office to figure out what percentage of the president's travels are campaign related. That determines how much the federal government should be reimbursed by the Biden campaign. Sometimes the calculations aren't straightforward, such as when the White House adds an official event to an otherwise political trip.

Norm Eisen, a White House ethics lawyer under President Barack Obama, said both Republicans and Democrats have usually hewed closely to regulations.

“We had a set of rules on how to do the allocations," he said. "They’re intricate, and we stuck to them.”

No matter what, taxpayers end up on the hook for most of the cost. Campaigns do not pay for all the Secret Service agents and the rest of the security apparatus. In fact, they usually only cover the cost of Air Force One passengers who are flying for explicitly political purposes — sort of like buying a ticket on a particularly exclusive private jet.

HOW MUCH HAS BIDEN PAID?

Biden's campaign and his joint fundraising committee have been stockpiling travel cash in an escrow account maintained by the Democratic National Committee. From January 2023 until the end of last month, they deposited nearly $6.5 million.

Some of that money goes to general campaign logistics, such as staff expenses and advance work. The account is also used to reimburse the federal government for official aircraft used to transport the president, the first lady, the vice president and the second gentleman when they travel for the reelection effort.

So far, not much money has found its way back to the U.S. Treasury. As of the latest data available, just $300,000 has been provided.

It's safe to assume that Biden's campaign will end up forking over much more than that once the campaign is over. Trump's team reimbursed the federal government nearly $4.7 million for travel expenses during the 2020 race.

But Biden probably won't have trouble covering his bills. His campaign and the DNC had more than $192 million in cash on hand at the end of March.

FAA lifts temporary ground stop of Alaska Airlines flights after technical issue is resolved

The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop for all Alaska Airlines flights Wednesday after grounding the planes earlier as a result of a computer problem at the carrier.

The Seattle-based airline said in a statement that an issue arose “while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance.”

The FAA initially approved a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights starting at approximately 10:50 a.m. ET.

It was lifted just before 11:45 a.m. ET.

It wasn't immediately clear how many flights were affected. An Alaska spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
