Disney Park Attendance 2024

Over the past half century, Disney has solidified itself as the undisputed leader in theme park attendance. Disney’s various theme parks are annually ranked among the top-visited parks in the world with the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland occupying the top two spots annually. Over the past four decades, the expansion of the Disney Parks empire beyond the borders of the United States has proven to not only increase the company’s footprint, but also place a number of additional Disney parks into the top attendance charts.  I thought it would be fun to take a moment and look at just how many people actually visit the many Disney parks each year. Here is a quick rundown of what I was able to find for annual Disney park attendance.

For many more Disney statistics (close to 600 of them), please visit this Disney facts post .

Please note that some of these Disney parks attendance figures are easier to find than others, so some of these are based on news reports and not official company tallies. All stats are linked to their source unless it was sent to me directly from the company. No stat listed should be considered in making any type of investment decision. In other words: This is the best I can find, but I don’t guarantee anything.

disneyland attendance chart

In 2022, the Disneyland attendance chart showed 16.881 million total visitors, with averages of 1.406 million per month, 324,635 per week, and 46,249 per day.

As you explore the Disneyland attendance chart for 2022, you’re diving into more than just numbers.

This chart offers insights into the park’s resilience and adaptability in the face of global challenges. Analyzing Disneyland’s attendance helps in understanding how external factors, such as economic shifts or health concerns, impact visitor trends.

2022: A Year of Rebound and Reflection

The Disneyland attendance chart for 2022 is particularly intriguing, marking a period of recovery and reassessment.

After the unprecedented disruptions of the previous years, these statistics provide valuable clues about the park’s recuperation. They also serve as a gauge for the effectiveness of strategies implemented by Disneyland, such as new ticketing options like Magic Key passes or California resident tickets .

Detailed Analysis of 2022 Disneyland Attendance

Presentation of 2022 attendance figures.

Focusing on 2022, the Disneyland attendance chart reveals a total visitor count of 16.881 million.

This figure represents a significant moment in Disneyland’s history , indicating a path towards recovery. When you look at these numbers, consider the various initiatives Disneyland might have implemented to attract visitors post-pandemic, such as introducing new ticket options or adjusting park reservation systems .

Breaking Down Monthly, Weekly, and Daily Averages

The detailed breakdown of the Disneyland attendance chart shows an average of 1.406 million visitors per month, 324,635 per week, and 46,249 per day in 2022.

These averages not only signify the park’s drawing power but also reflect strategic decisions like annual pass cancellations or adjustments in ticket pricing . Understanding these figures in the context of the global theme park industry highlights Disneyland’s unique position and the factors contributing to its enduring appeal.

Factors Influencing Disneyland Attendance

New attractions, marketing, and economic conditions.

The introduction of new attractions at Disneyland significantly influences attendance, as each new feature promises unique experiences and draws crowds.

Effective marketing of these attractions further enhances their appeal. Similarly, economic conditions play a crucial role. Just as the best Disneyland ticket prices reflect the economic strategy of Disney, they also affect visitor decisions, balancing affordability with the promise of an unforgettable experience.

In addition to new features, the overall economic climate, including factors like travel costs and consumer spending power, impacts attendance. During times of economic downturn, even Disneyland, with its varied ticketing options , might see a shift in visitor demographics and overall numbers. These variations underline the importance of a flexible and responsive pricing strategy in maintaining steady visitor flow.

Seasonal Variations and Holidays

The Disneyland attendance chart shows clear spikes during certain times of the year, particularly during holidays and school vacations.

These periods, characterized by special events and themed celebrations, are especially attractive to families and tourists. The park’s ability to offer unique seasonal experiences, much like the consideration given to how long Disneyland tickets are good for , plays a key role in these attendance peaks.

Conversely, off-peak seasons offer a different insight into attendance trends. These times may appeal to different visitor groups, such as those seeking a less crowded experience or taking advantage of lower prices, as seen with Disneyland discount tickets for students .

Comparisons with Other Disney Parks

Attendance comparisons worldwide.

Comparing Disneyland’s attendance with other Disney parks provides a global perspective on its performance.

For example, the attendance figures at Disneyland Paris might differ due to varying regional attractions and cultural preferences. Insight into these differences can be gleaned from specific programs, like the military discounts offered at Disneyland , which may attract different visitor segments in various regions.

This comparison also highlights the uniqueness of each Disney park. While Disneyland in California has its charm and history, parks like Tokyo Disneyland have their unique appeal. The comparative analysis of attendance, including factors like ticket prices and local economic conditions, as seen in Disneyland vs Disney World costs , offers a comprehensive view of Disney’s global strategy and regional adaptations.

Trends and Patterns in Different Regions

Studying these trends and patterns helps in understanding the diverse strategies Disney employs in different markets. The way Disneyland adapts to local preferences, evident in special events or promotions, mirrors broader trends in the theme park industry. Just as the Disney Annual Pass program has evolved, so too have the strategies employed at various Disney parks to cater to their unique audiences.

Furthermore, these comparisons are vital for forecasting future trends. For instance, a surge in attendance at one park might signal a shift in consumer preferences or the successful implementation of a new strategy, such as the introduction of Disneyland Magic Key passes . These insights are invaluable for long-term planning and maintaining the allure of these iconic destinations.

Future Projections for Disneyland Attendance

Predicting future trends.

Forecasting future trends in Disneyland attendance requires a careful analysis of current data and market dynamics. The patterns observed in recent years, including the impact of global events and the introduction of new attractions, provide vital clues. Changes in operational strategies, such as the cancellation of the Disney Annual Pass , offer a glimpse into potential shifts in Disney’s approach to managing visitor numbers.

These projections are not just about anticipating numbers; they also involve predicting changes in consumer behavior and preferences. The evolving nature of entertainment, alongside technological advancements and economic fluctuations, will likely shape future attendance trends. As such, Disney’s ability to adapt and innovate, perhaps by offering new experiences or revising ticketing options like Disneyland Magic Key monthly payments , will be crucial.

Potential Strategies for Disney

A key component might be the introduction of new, immersive experiences that leverage the latest technological advancements, much like the constant evolution seen in Disney’s attraction lineup. Additionally, adapting to changing visitor demographics and preferences could involve revising pricing strategies. For instance, the introduction of flexible ticket options, akin to the Disneyland Magic Key monthly payments , could cater to a wider range of visitors, ensuring steady attendance while enhancing guest satisfaction. This adaptability and foresight will be crucial in maintaining Disneyland’s position as a leading destination in the theme park industry.

Final Thoughts

Summary of 2022 attendance data.

The 2022 Disneyland attendance chart offers a comprehensive look into the park’s recovery and resilience.

With a total of 16.881 million visitors and an average of 46,249 visitors per day, these figures signify a period of rebound.

The detailed breakdown of monthly, weekly, and daily averages reveals the park’s steady allure amidst changing global circumstances. These statistics, while specific to Disneyland, are indicative of broader trends in the theme park industry.

Importance of Attendance Trends

Understanding these attendance trends is crucial for the theme park industry. It allows for better strategic planning, marketing, and operational adjustments. These trends also reflect consumer behavior, economic conditions, and the effectiveness of new attractions or policies, such as Disneyland’s various ticketing options .

For industry leaders and enthusiasts alike, these attendance figures are not just numbers; they are a narrative of how theme parks like Disneyland continue to enchant and adapt in a rapidly changing world.

Things To Do

Disneyland | disneyland’s annual passholders accounted for half of attendance, analysts say.

With an estimated 1 million passholders, there would have been an impossibly long virtual queue of die-hard fans waiting anxiously to snag an online advance reservation for Disneyland’s reopening day.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

It’s easy to understand why Disneyland was forced to kill its annual pass program amid the extended coronavirus pandemic closure when you realize an estimated one in every two visitors to the Anaheim theme park was a passholder.

Annual passholders comprise an estimated 50% of Disneyland resort attendance, according to UBS financial analysts.

SEE ALSO: Disneyland will stay closed for at least another 1 or 2 months, says Disney CFO

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are unlikely to return to full operation until spring or summer under COVID-19 health and safety reopening guidelines issued by the state.

Disneyland stunned fans by ending its annual passholder program and announcing that a new membership program will be unveiled at a later date.

Disneyland officials won’t say how many people have annual passes, but theme park industry observers have estimated the number to be 1 million.

SEE ALSO: Disneyland annual pass program reset would be ‘heresy’ before pandemic, Disney CEO says

A million people is hard to imagine. Those types of numbers typically only show up for victory parades, mass protests, free concerts and the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

A million passholders have never turned out en masse at Disneyland. But the problems would be immense if even a fraction of those fans wanted to be on hand when the park reopens following the COVID-19 closure.

Disneyland attendance reached 18.7 million visitors in 2019, according to the Themed Entertainment Association/AECOM. Disney California Adventure attracted 9.9 million visitors the same year, according to TEA/AECOM.

Combined, Disneyland and DCA draw an estimated 28.6 million visitors annually, according to TEA/AECOM. Passholders make up 14.3 million of those visits each year, based on the UBS estimates.

Disneyland attracts an estimated 51,000 visitors per day while Disney California Adventure draws another 27,000 daily, according to TEA/AECOM. Disney’s two Anaheim parks draw approximately 78,000 visitors per day, according to TEA/AECOM.

At that rate, it would take Disneyland nearly 20 days just to let each passholder into the park once. DCA would take nearly twice as long. And that’s without allowing a single daily ticket-buyer or Disney hotel guest into the parks.

SEE ALSO: How Disney Imagineering turned the Rainforest Cafe into a Star Wars rebel base in Downtown Disney

COVID-19 health and safety guidelines issued by California will limit Disneyland and DCA attendance to a 25% capacity limit when the parks reopen. That stretches the length of time it would take to get each passholder into the parks just once from days to months: Nearly three months for Disneyland and approximately five months for DCA.

The attendance numbers from TEA/AECOM don’t represent park capacity, but they give a sense of the daunting challenge of accommodating 1 million passholders presented Disneyland.

Disneyland passholders expect relatively unfettered access to the park — depending on restrictions tied to their annual passes. No Disneyland annual pass limits passholders to just a few visits per year — and that’s Disneyland’s problem. You can’t offer passholders access to the park and then deny them entry. Disneyland had only one option: End the annual pass system as we know it and start over with a new membership program.

2024 Disneyland Planning Guide

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Our Disneyland vacation planning guide covers what’s new & next in 2024, when to visit to avoid crowds, best restaurants, hotels in Anaheim, money-saving ticket tips, Halloween & Christmas in the parks, and more. It’s a great resource for first-timers to Southern California or lifelong WDW fans. (Updated March 4, 2024.)

Let’s start with all of the latest updates. Disney has released the Full Seasonal Events Calendar for 2024 at Disneyland , which includes the following:

  • DCA Food & Wine Festival (now through April 22, 2024)
  • Star Wars Season of the Force (April 5 to June 2, 2024)
  • Pixar Fest (April 26 to August 4, 2024)

Disney has also shared that Halloween 2024 at Disneyland will start early (August 23), which likely means Oogie Boogie Bash Party dates beginning earlier. Conversely, Christmas 2024 at Disneyland will start later than normal (November 15), which is unexpected given the popularity of the holiday season. Those are the big things for the 2024 calendar at Disneyland, but there’s a ton more to cover…

From a planning perspective, the big newish thing is Genie+ and Lightning Lanes, which are essentially paid FastPass, for those who were familiar with that. It’s important to understand how this works and whether you should buy Genie+ or Individual Lightning Lanes before you visit Disneyland.

Everything you need to know, including ride priorities, where it’s NOT necessary to buy Genie+ or Lightning Lanes, and much more is covered in our Guide to Genie+ and Lightning Lanes at Disneyland and DCA . That’s regularly updated to include the latest price increases and additions to the Lightning Lane ride roster–both of which have changed in the last few months.

We’ve used Genie+ and Lightning Lanes many times, and cover our experiences and strategy there. If you’re a Walt Disney World regular, the good news is that Genie+ is much easier to use at Disneyland. We’d recommend definitely recommend that guide to get a sense for how to use it and priorities–and would also advise having savvy strategy for Early Entry (if eligible) and rope drop plans. Other than that, you don’t need to overthink things. Genie+ makes visiting Disneyland and DCA so much easier.

Regardless of whether you end up buying the Genie+ paid line-skipping, you’ll want to make the decision ahead of time, and plan your strategy accordingly to either get the most mileage out of Genie+ or have an efficient itinerary that finds alternatives for beating the crowds. (Our strong recommendation is to purchase Genie+ for at least one day. If cost is an issue, trim the ‘fat’ from your vacation budget somewhere else.)

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Disneyland has been relatively busy in the last couple of years, which is precisely why we recommend buying the Genie+ service to save time waiting in line. It hasn’t been all bad–and it does appear that “revenge travel” is starting to exhaust itself. However, not nearly to the same degree as Walt Disney World. It’s still varying degrees of busy–just slightly less busy than last year.

Our expectation is that pent-up demand continues to die down in 2024. The holiday season hasn’t been bonkers busy across the board–there was a post-Thanksgiving and early December lull for pretty much the first time in the post-reopening period. It  feels like Disneyland is on the precipice of returning to a pre-2020 level of normal crowd dynamics, but we’ve thought this before only to have things get crazy again.

To that point, choosing less busy dates is incredibly important and that’ll continue to be the case even if pent-up demand fizzles out. Our totally free 2024 Disneyland Crowd Calendars offer day by day guides as to when the parks will be least busy and busiest. These crowd calendars are influenced by a variety of factors, including marketing, discounts, park hours, new attraction openings, special events, Anaheim Convention Center events, and even weather (good or bad). We strive to keep our Disneyland crowd calendars updated to reflect changes in attendance trends.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

We’re able to keep on top of all the changing crowd patterns and additions because we are Magic Key Passholders who reside in Southern California. Typically, we visit Disneyland and DCA at least once per week to refine this guide and provide you the best info.

In addition to park visits, we do frequent hotel stays, lots of eating, and field testing of Genie+ and Lightning Lanes as well as other itineraries and strategy for beating lines at the parks. Emphasis on typically since this past year has been a bit atypical and slower-paced for us as we our family grew in size. Suffice to say, expect more posts like Baby Bricker’s First Visit to Disneyland in 2024!

But enough about us. Suffice to say, we’re at Disneyland and DCA frequently, and have planning updates and news to share on a regular basis. If you want to receive updates when discounts are released, new things are announced, etc., sign up to receive our free Disney email newsletter , which covers Disneyland plus Walt Disney World and the international parks.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Before we get to the nuts and bolts of Disneyland vacation planning, let’s start with quick background. Disneyland is “Walt Disney’s original magic kingdom.” It’s the castle park that debuted in 1955 and paved the way for other such theme parks around the globe. Disneyland is the only park that Walt Disney himself set foot in and had an active role developing. Beyond its historical legacy that makes it a California institution, Disneyland is incredibly attraction-dense, with enough rides to fill two full days or more (if you’re so inclined).

Directly across from Disneyland is Disney California Adventure (DCA), the second gate of Disneyland Resort. DCA is ostensibly inspired by the Golden State, but is more just a catch-all park with some attractions having a vague California connection and others being driven by Marvel, Pixar, and other Disney franchises.

In addition to the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure theme parks, Disneyland Resort is home to Downtown Disney and three official hotels. Downtown Disney is a shopping, dining and entertainment district just outside the two parks. The aforementioned resorts are Pixar Place Hotel, Disneyland Hotel, and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel–which is directly connected to DCA. The entirety of Disneyland Resort is walkable, with no transportation aside from your feet needed to get anywhere within the property.

Now let’s dig into planning, starting with what’s new and next at Disneyland Resort…

What’s New & Next at Disneyland

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Beyond the aforementioned substantive additions, there are smaller ‘experience improvements’ at Disneyland. Specifically, the start of Park Hopping has been moved forward to 11 am; this makes it easier to switch parks for lunch.

There are also a handful of new on-site perks for hotel guests, the best of which is Early Entry. See our Guide to Early Entry at Disneyland for what you need to know about this pre-park opening access to Disneyland and DCA. (Note that Early Entry is now every other day for each park as of 2024; it was previously in both parks every day of the week.)

Additionally, PhotoPass digital photo downloads of on-ride photos are now free for all guests on the Disneyland app. This includes attraction photos captured on Radiator Springs Racers, Space Mountain, Incredicoaster, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, and more.

In terms of new rides, the biggest relatively recent addition is Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and its two attractions, Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. The latter is Disneyland’s biggest blockbuster addition since 1995, a modern masterpiece of Imagineering that is immensely popular and well-worth the multi-hour waits.

Over at Disney California Adventure, the most recent expansion is the Avengers Campus Marvel Land. This features one ride, one restaurant, meet & greets, and shopping. It’ll also showcases a Stuntronics Spider-Man, which is a sight to behold.

The Magic Happens daytime parade is also back, and not to be missed. We recommend catching the parade’s first performance from the end of Main Street on the back side of the flagpole. Alternatively, the west side of Main Street will offer shade; welcome reprieve from the sun and heat during the summer months.

Then there are the nighttime shows. Mickey’s Mix Magic is back, and has a couple of separate runs in the first half of the year. In between, fan-favorite Magic Journeys will be shown during the heart of the spring break season. In Summer 2024, Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular returns for Pixar Fest.

Also coming back from another year-plus hiatus is Fantasmic, which will be presented in modified form on the Rivers of America once again. See the 2024 Disneyland Entertainment Schedule for the dates of what’s returning and what’s missing.

Two of the biggest additions for 2024 at Disneyland are at the hotels. Late last year, the brand-new Discovery Tower opened at Disneyland Hotel. This is the new Disney Vacation Club wing, which can also be booked by cash-paying guests. Although they’re all technically part of the same resort, there’s a night-and-day difference between the DVC and hotel towers. See our Photo Tour of the Villas at Disneyland Hotel for more on the new tower.

In early 2024, Disney Imagineers completed an overhaul of Paradise Pier Hotel into Pixar Place Hotel. So here, it’s a matter of the same “bones” of the hotel, but with a fresh coat of paint ( and much more ). This project was truly transformative, breathing new life into the aging tower hotel. (In other hotel news, special offers are currently available:  2024 Discounts on Hotels of Disneyland Resort .)

If you’re curious about the specifics of other additions on the horizon, consult our What’s New & Next for Disneyland in 2024 . This gives you an idea of when you might want to visit if you’re still choosing dates, trying to find the best time in terms of special events, new rides, and more.

More is coming in 2024 and beyond, but those are the main things to know. Now, let’s get down to business: what you need to plan a Disneyland vacation…

When to Visit Disneyland

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

The single most important part of planning a trip to Disneyland is determining when to visit. As mentioned above, crowds are a big component of this, but should not be the sole determining factor. Weather, seasonal events, pricing, and other variables are all important.

To that point, our we also have the Best & Worst Months to Visit Disneyland list, which ranks every month of the year. Even more to the point, this covers our 3 favorite weeks of the year to take a Disneyland trip. That’s more qualitative, and thus can more useful than crowd calendars for many Disneyland planners.

Again, our crowd calendars and month by month ranking resources have been updated to take into account changing attendance patterns brought on by Magic Keys, make-up travel, discounted SoCal tickets, returning entertainment, and more. Crowds have already changed, and we will continue to monitor and update accordingly in the future. Just be warned that crowd calendars are less reliable right now due to pent-up demand, capacity limits, and everything else.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

As for seasonal events, we have two favorite times to do Disneyland. We highly recommend Halloween, which is our #2 time of the year at Disneyland. Check out our Ultimate Guide to Disneyland at Halloween for reasons why, and assistance planning a trip during that specific timeframe.

We’re already looking forward to the return of Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party , which will be back for Fall 2024 ( and probably late summer! ). That’s a hard ticket event, meaning that tickets to it cost extra; you do not need  to attend Oogie Boogie Bash to have a great time during the Halloween season at Disneyland, but we recommend it to anyone who is willing and able to splurge–especially fans of rare characters ( and villains! ).

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Our favorite time of year at Disneyland–by a wide margin–is the holiday season. Unlike Halloween, there is no Christmas hard ticket event, meaning that everything is included with the price of regular admission. This means holiday fireworks, special parades, decorations, attraction overlays, entertainment, and so much more.

You could literally spend multiple full days focused exclusively on the seasonal offerings at Disneyland during the holiday season. Read our Ultimate Guide to Disneyland at Christmas to learn more about what makes this time of year so special–and see photos of the parks in all of their Christmas glory!

Finally, before solidifying your travel dates, you’ll also want to check out our 2024 Disneyland Refurbishment Calendar to make sure any must-do attractions won’t be closed for renovations during your visit.

We typically do not recommend relying heavily on the refurbishment calendar. While Disneyland provides advance notice of most major multi-month closures, that’s not always the case. Some are scheduled last minute for necessary repairs or preventative maintenance. Short projects are sometimes scheduled at the last minute, and unannounced downtime (due to breakdowns or other issues) can also impact attractions.

Our biggest piece of advice with regard to refurbishments is not to visit in January or February if a high number of ride closures will negatively impact your trip. Winter is typically Disneyland’s refurbishment season, with many attractions going down for annual maintenance after the holidays.

Where to Stay

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

There are a ton of options in terms of where to stay near Disneyland: Good Neighbor Hotels, official Disney resorts, nearby hotels within driving distance, sprawling resorts in nearby beach towns, and more. In  Best Hotels Near Disneyland , we cover our top 10 picks for hotels within walking distance of the parks, with 5 family-friendly budget options, 3 luxury resorts, and 2 Disney-owned hotels. That’s a concise resource if you don’t want to comb through our more comprehensive hotel info.

For most vacation planners, the decision comes down to choosing among Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa ( our favorite! ), Disneyland Hotel (second favorite), and Pixar Place Hotel, or one of the cheaper hotels on Harbor Boulevard. We cover the pros and cons of each choice in our Where to Stay at Disneyland: Off-Site v. On-Site Hotels post.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

If you’re looking for something more thorough, we’ve stayed at every on-site Disneyland hotel and most of the Good Neighbor Disneyland hotels and other off-site hotels within walking distance of the Disneyland Esplanade.

All of these are covered in our Rankings & Reviews of the Best & Worst Hotels Near Disneyland . This post ranks ~60 hotels near Disneyland at which we have stayed, along with room photos, pros & cons, and other useful information. That also details how to score a good deal on a hotel that’s close to Disneyland.

Fair warning: those comprehensive rankings can be overwhelming. We do a lot of hotel stays in Anaheim and report on them; most of that’s overkill for planners–you just need to know which ones are the ‘hotel hell’ options (bottom of the list) to avoid at all costs and the best ones to book (top of the list). If you’ve already booked accommodations, you might also want to search the list to see where your selected hotel ranks!

Park Tickets

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Our Money-Saving Guide to Disneyland Tickets is a huge resource with recommendations on what type of Disneyland tickets you should buy, including how many days, whether you should get Park Hopper, and where you can buy Disneyland tickets to save some money.

There are some great offers right now–we recommend bundling park tickets and your hotel stay to save even more, especially with the 3rd and 4th night free specials at hotels near Disneyland . These package deals can save you a lot of money.

For the vast majority of guests visiting Disneyland, we recommend the Park Hopper ticket option. This allows you to bounce back and forth between the two parks throughout the day, which is easy to do given that their about a football field apart.

The practical upsides of this is starting at the park that opens first and ending your night at the park open later (Disneyland is often open 2 hours later than Disney California Adventure). You can also eat in the park with the dining options you prefer, grab a beer in DCA (there’s no alcohol in Disneyland outside of Oga’s Cantina in Star Wars Land), and enjoy the nighttime spectaculars in both parks.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

If you’re a local or just a big diehard Disney fan planning to make multiple trips in a single year, Magic Key Annual Passes are also an option. Some tiers of these APs have already sold out, but others remain available for purchase. See our Guide to Magic Keys at Disneyland: 2024 Prices, Perks, Blockout Dates & Discounts for more details.

Prior to moving to California, we were Disneyland AP holders while living in Indianapolis, Indiana followed by Orlando, Florida. We’d make several long weekend trips out to Disneyland each year, and the APs more than paid for themselves.

With that said, Annual Passes were  much  cheaper when we lived in the Midwest–a fraction of the current price–and we blogged about Disney by the time we moved to Central Florida. So our circumstances are a bit unique. Nevertheless, if you live in Nevada, Utah, or even Northern California…and can do a few long weekends each year, Magic Keys might make sense for you, too!

Disneyland Strategy & Itineraries

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

There are over 75 attractions between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. On a normal day, the average guest will only experience 10-11 of those. It would thus take you at least 6 days to experience everything in the two theme parks, assuming you didn’t want to re-ride anything. Obviously, not many people are devoting over a week to their Disneyland vacation.

As such, we’ve developed a few step-by-step Disneyland touring plans, each of which will enable you to efficiently experience the parks, while also enjoying their leisurely offerings and atmosphere. More to the point, you’ll be able to do 20+ rides per day–and skip the ones not worth your time.

Here are our best and recommended itineraries:

  • Disneyland 1-Day Itinerary – Only have one day to visit Disneyland? This is a step-by-step plan of attack for which attractions you should do, where you should eat, what to see, and more. This covers all of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, including Rise of the Resistance.
  • Disneyland 2-Day Itinerary – Same idea, but spread over two days. We recommend most guests allocate two full days to Disneyland.
  • Disney California Adventure 1-Day Itinerary – Unlike Disneyland, DCA is easier to fully experience in a single day. This touring plan includes strategy for beating the crowds at Radiator Springs Racers, Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, Web Slingers Spider-Man Adventure, and more!

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

We are currently working on additional multi-day itineraries for trips of 4+ days at Disneyland Resort. For now, if you plan on spending more time at DCA, consult our Disney California Adventure Ride Reviews & Guide . The article reviews every attraction at Disneyland, giving each a numerical score out of 10, plus highlights key attractions that we consider the best ones, which should be prioritized if you have limited time.

Our Disneyland Ride Reviews & Guide does the same thing for the castle park, in case you want to spend 3+ days there. (Which you totally could, especially now that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is open!)

Dining at Disneyland

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Food is half the fun at Disneyland. Both parks have great restaurants, iconic snacks, decadent desserts, and great drinks. We typically go all-out when visiting the parks, doing breakfast at one of the hotels (or sometimes in the park), followed by a mid-morning snack, counter service lunch, and table service dinner.

The stereotype that all Disney food is unhealthy food like burgers and hot dogs is entirely false. Disneyland has inexpensive unique dining options as well as expensive fine dining. Good dining can help define a trip! To that end, we highly recommend checking out our List of the 23 Best Restaurants at Disneyland . Those are the places we dine the most, and recommend to friends visiting the parks. You’ll find several hidden gems on there, as well as explanations for why we’ve snubbed several hotspots.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

If you want advice, food photos, and more about all restaurants, see our Disneyland Restaurant Reviews . (Honestly, we think that’s probably overkill for 95% of you. The ‘best of’ list above covers where you should do meals, and there are more lists below for bars, snacks, and desserts.)

Beyond full meals, we have a few resources that can help you plan memorable meals at Disneyland. If you have kids, we highly recommend consulting our Disneyland Character Dining Guide , which covers the best character buffets in the hotels and parks.

Looking for the best quick meals? Our Top 10 Disneyland Counter Service Restaurants list ranks the best meals in the castle park, while our Top 10 Disney California Adventure Counter Service Restaurants list offers the same for DCA.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Want to have fun with your food at Disneyland? Our Top 10 Delicious Desserts at Disneyland covers delicious treats, including some hidden gems, plus brand new items and recently-added restaurants in Downtown Disney!

If you’re into drinking, we also have posts about a few of our favorite lounges: Trader Sam’s , Lamplight Lounge , GCH Craftsman Bar , and Carthay Circle Restaurant . The last one is particularly noteworthy because–in addition to the lounge downstairs–the restaurant upstairs is the best in-park restaurant in either park.

Transportation

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Should you fly or drive to Disneyland? Rent a car or use public transportation? What about getting around Southern California? There are a ton of questions you might have, and our Guide to Disneyland Transportation covers everything you need to know, answering these questions for you based on our first-hand experiences visiting Anaheim as tourists and living nearby as locals.

If you’ve already decided on flying to California but aren’t sure of the pros & cons of each option, check out our Guide to Airports Near Disneyland. That covers the strengths and weaknesses of the 5 airports in Southern California that are relatively convenient to Disneyland.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

In a nutshell, our strong recommendation would be flying into SNA (or even LGB) over LAX. Even if the flight is a little more expensive, it’s worth it. Not only is SNA closer to Disneyland, but LAX has tons of chaos, construction, and crowds.

We like LAX and its eclectic energy, but it’s more than a little overwhelming for a first-timer. If you’ve never been to Southern California or a large city like Los Angeles, it can be a bit much and start your trip off on the wrong foot. Meanwhile, SNA is laid back and quiet. If there were a list ranking the best airports for napping, it would be near the top and LAX would be near the bottom.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

In addition to this, SNA is much closer to Disneyland than LAX, which makes it easier to simply take an Uber or Lyft from the airport to wherever you’re staying near Disneyland. In most cases, we’d recommend rideshare over renting a car at the airport, as the vast majority of hotels near Disneyland now charge for parking. So not only will you be paying to rent the car, but also to park it.

The vast majority of hotels near Disneyland are within walking distance, so you won’t need a vehicle during the theme park portion of your trip to Southern California. If you’re staying at one of the hotels we recommend in Anaheim, it’s literally counterproductive to drive to Disneyland since the parking structures are all farther away than most of the nearby hotels.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

If you’re venturing beyond Disneyland to one of the destinations discussed below–and we strongly recommend that you do–while visiting Southern California, our advice would be to book a rental car in Anaheim. There are numerous rental car companies within walking distance of Disneyland, and most offer one-way rentals to the nearby airports. Walk over to one of those on your checkout morning, pick up your rental car, and continue your California adventure!

We do not  recommend relying on rideshare if you’re heading to Los Angeles. However, if you’re doing Laguna Beach or another coastal community, a rental car may not be needed at all. Many coastal towns have free trolley service that is fantastic. Simply take an Uber or Lyft from Disneyland to wherever you’re staying in the beach cities.

Southern California BEYOND Disneyland

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

If you want to venture beyond theme parks, you’re in luck. Southern California is one of the best places in the world to visit! Thanks to Los Angeles, San Diego, and the beach cities in between, there’s a ton to do in the area.

In addition to this site, we have non-Disney blog: TravelCaffeine with resources for on an eclectic mix of the places where we’ve lived or visited extensively. California is one such emphasis, as we’ve spent a ton of time exploring our home state. If you’re planning on heading to LA after Disneyland, be sure to check out our Ultimate Guide to Los Angeles .

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

While LA is one of the greatest cities in the world, we’re particularly partial to Laguna Beach. It’s home to the best stretch of coast in California, has small-town charm and personality, and tons of things to do. To that point, see our  Ultimate Guide to Laguna Beach, California for extensive advice. If you feel overwhelmed by the idea of visiting Los Angeles, then Laguna Beach is for you!

In addition to these planning resources, we also give away a free eBook, 101 Things to Do in Southern California over on TravelCaffeine, so be sure to download that totally free resource!

If you’re thinking of visiting other theme parks in Southern California, we also have guides to those…

Universal Studios Hollywood Trip Planning Guide – In just a few years, USH has transformed and improved dramatically. The opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter was what really put the park on the map as a vacation destination, but many other additions have made this a great park in the last few years. Our favorite new attraction is Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash, a new family-friendly dark ride. (Read our review of it in Universal’s New Dark Ride Rivals Disney’s Best! )

The blockbuster new addition is Super Nintendo World. We love this land, and rate two of its biggest components in our Ride Review: Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge and our Review of Toadstool Cafe in Super Nintendo World . For practical planning advice, check out our comprehensive  Strategy Guide for Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood . That offers tips & tricks, how to beat the crowds, and a ton of other advice for making the most of your time in this incredible new land.

Aside from that, the Studio Tour is our favorite attraction, which is a 45-minute plus tram tour through the working backlot of Universal’s studio. If you are only interested in this Studio Tour, you might broaden your potential options beyond just USH, and also consider the Warner Brothers Studio Tour and Sony Pictures Studio Tour as alternatives.

Guide to Knott’s Berry Farm – An Orange County institution that proudly proclaims itself as “America’s 1st Theme Park.” Really, Knott’s is a tale of two theme parks. It has modern roller coasters and other fare for thrill-seekers. Thematically, this leaves a lot to be desired.

Then there are the quainter areas, reminiscent of Frontierland at Disneyland. We love these areas–and the park’s annual Boysenberry Festival. All things considered, we love both Knott’s Berry Farm and Universal Studios Hollywood, and together with Disneyland Resort, these four gates make for a great theme park vacation in Southern California!

Other Disneyland Planning Resources

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

Now that we’ve covered the essentials to ensure you have a great trip to Disneyland, we have a bunch of other resources that will guide you through the planning process to make your visit to Disneyland more enjoyable, helping you save time and money. Armed with all of this knowledge, you will have a much better vacation.

What to Pack – Packing for Disneyland is comparable to packing for any vacation, but with a few twists. Here’s our list of “unordinary” items to pack that will help enhance your Disneyland trip!

Guide to Downtown Disney – We sort of gloss over it here, but Downtown Disney is a massive area within Disneyland Resort’s security perimeter. You can easily leave either park and get to one of these restaurants for a meal…or some of the best ice cream you’ll ever have…in under 10 minutes.

Our 101 Best Disneyland Tips – This is not nearly as structured as our other advice, but these tips offer great advice and sometimes obscure little things that will help you visit the parks like a local. This is more granular advice than what you’ll find in our other planning articles, but we’ve had a lot of positive feedback from readers who really got a lot more out of their trips because of those tips.

Renting DVC Points to Save Money on Accommodations – This is written from a WDW perspective, but there are also Disney Vacation Club villas at the Grand Californian. Booking there can be a challenge (it’s incredibly popular), but you can save a ton of money if your timing is right and you get lucky.

Best Credit Cards for Disney Travel – Leveraging credit card rewards can be a great way of getting free airfare or hotel rooms, and there are several options near Disneyland that you can book for free thanks to signup bonuses.

Tips for Buying Discount Disney Gift Cards – Want to save at least 5% on every single thing you buy at Disneyland? These hacks are for you. Some are relatively simple and straightforward (like using the Target RedCard) while others require a bit more effort.

In general, there are a variety of ways you can save money on a trip to Disneyland. If you’re looking for the best way to save on an entire vacation package, many of our favorite hotels near Disneyland can be booked via Get Away Today at a discount . If you bundle tickets into your hotel stay, you’ll get an even better deal. You can check package prices here .

Between this blog and TravelCaffeine.com , you should be totally covered with what you need to know if you’re thinking about visiting Disneyland Resort and Southern California sometime in 2024. We can’t encourage people enough to give Disneyland a try, especially Disney fans who are biased towards Walt Disney World as their “home” park. Disneyland is a totally different, much more relaxed experience. It’s intimate in both size and feel, and is oozing with history and incredible attractions.

I could go on for pages and pages about why I love Disneyland, and why everyone owes it to themselves to visit Disneyland, but hopefully this is a good-enough jumping off point. If you’ve never been to either Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort, it’s a good place to start as we attempt to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of each in an unbiased manner. It looks like we have a chance to visit Disneyland for the first time (as hard core WDW people) in April. Unfortunately it’s a very busy weekend (Apr 5-8) but I’ll take what I can get. We will buy Genie+ of course.. we will skip Galaxy’s Edge as we’ve done that many times in FL. Do you have a 2 day Itinerary for DL + DCA for people who are used to WDW? In other words – what are all the OG and unique to DL rides, and top 3 snacks/dining experiences? I’m thinking Lamplight Lounge for one meal and some snacks. It’s weird to feel like a noob with Disney since we are so familiar w/ WDW.

' src=

We have visited WDW many times. Most recently first week of December 2022. It was fantastic!! Thanks for your recommendation on the week. Thinking about a first time trip to Disneyland this year. Would like to catch some other area sights as well. How many days should we plan as first timers to the parks? Best place to stay when we likely won’t be back for a while. Thanks!

' src=

Thanks for the updated guide. Full of lots of great information as usual, and it’s nice to see more pictures of Sarah and Megatron! (And Tom of course.) We’re planning to go around November 10-12. Do you think Dapper Days combined with the start of the holiday season plus Veteran’s day will make it extra crowded? If so, any touring tips besides rope drop? We’re hopefully staying at the Grand so will have early entry.

' src=

Thank you so much for all your help. Had a great Disney experience thanks to you!

' src=

I’m wondering if you have a 1 day itinerary article that covers both Disneyland and DCA with park hopper. We only have 1 day to visit during this trip and we’re traveling with an infant so it does cut out on a bunch of high priority rides. We’re also diehard WDW people and have rode those attractions SEVERAL times so we’re ok with cutting out things like Galaxys edge, Toy story mania… there are a few rides we want to do without the baby, ie radiator springs racers and can utilize single rider or rider swap for those, but are most interested in original dark rides for a more nostalgic experience. Thanks for being such a great resource for planning research, your blogs have been more then helpful!

Hello, My name is Jenna Taylor, and I’m a travel writer. I was simply conducting some research for content ideas when I came across your site.

What can I do to obtain a do-follow link on your site? Would you be willing to accept a guest post on your blog? If that’s the case, can you please let me know how much you would charge?

Please let me know what you think and please contact me if there are any additional specifics!

Tom, appreciate all your work to put these guides out. Your site was a big help when our family first started going to Disney World back in 2015.

We’re looking at our first visit to Disneyland sometime in summer 2023. I saw mentioned in a few different places that weekends are worse than weekdays. Looking back at summer 2022, Friday-Sunday showed significantly lower wait times than Monday- Thursday (per Thrilldata). I’m assuming that had to do with Magic Key blackouts – would that pattern be expected to repeat in June/July 2023?

' src=

Excellent information and orientation! Kind regards.

' src=

Hello! So, I am one of those people who hate to compose trip itineraries. I LOVE to go, but hate to plan the details. Do you offer this as a service? My husband and I are planning to take our oldest 2 granddaughters (ages 6 & 8) to Disneyland in July 2023. We will be arriving on a Sunday, leaving on a Thursday. Your information on lodging, flying, the airport, and transportation is fantastic.

' src=

You will have an amazing time! One tip I don’t see that often that we have found very helpful every time we go with our now 9 year-old is that we generally take a break from the parks sometime after lunch, go for a swim, relax a bit have a snack or get an early dinner and then head back to the parks a bit refreshed. Also, stay hydrated, sunscreen and i usually pack some lollipops for long lines;) Have a wonderful time!

' src=

If you’re looking for an itinerary planning service, check out Melanie B on Instagram (the_disney_rn). I’ve never needed an itinerary other than Tom and Sarah’s tips, but I know many people love them! Melanie always has amazing advice as a local Disneyland fan, so I’m sure her itineraries would be super helpful to you 🙂

If I buy a five day hopper with genie plus through getaway today does it include photo pass service for every day or for just one day or what?

The best plan is to purchase Disneyland tickets at Ralph’s, Smart and Final, Raleys, Target, Cardenas, Superior and Super A. The tickets are sold through ScanIt where you find the giftcards. Scan the QR code, select your tickets, enter your email and a barcode is generated for purchase at the register. Reservations are really open right now!!

Also, Target is offering a $20 instant rebate right now if you buy their current promo in their stores!!

A really good option is to purchase your Disneyland tickets at the grocery store – Ralph’s, Smart and Final, Raleys, Target, Cardenas, Superior and Super A. The tickets are sold through ScanIt where you find the giftcards. Scan the QR code, select your tickets, enter your email and a barcode is generated. Purchase in store. You get your credit card grocery points this way – I get cash back for grocery!!! Plus at Ralph’s you get FUEL rewards. Disneyland currently is running their $83/day through September. Get in the grocery store! Reservations are really open right now!!

Do you have any recommendations or information about parking options for day visitors? We will be in the Anaheim area visiting family and I am hoping to do a 1 day visit to Disneyland. We will be staying about 20 minutes away at the Hyatt House in Cypress, as that is the location that is near the people we are visiting.

' src=

If you are doing a 1 day visit to Disneyland, your best bet would be to park at at the Mickey and Friends parking structure. That’s the main structure for the parks and it’s the best option for park visitors.

Anaheim breaks tourism record for fifth straight year with 24.2 million visitors

A crowd watches a fashion show at a Disney event in Anaheim, which saw a record 24.2 million visitors last year.

A bigger convention center and two popular theme parks helped the city of Anaheim break its tourism record — again.

Anaheim welcomed 24.2 million visitors in 2017, about a 5% increase over the 23 million visitors in the previous year and more than 30% higher than 2012, according to Visit Anaheim, a nonprofit marketing organization for the city.

For the record:

7:45 p.m. Feb. 12, 2018 A previous version of this story stated an incorrect size for the recent expansion of the Anaheim Convention Center. It was expanded by 200,000 square feet.

Already home to the biggest convention center on the West Coast, Anaheim completed the seventh expansion of the facility last year, a project that helped the city break its tourism record for the fifth straight year.

Anaheim tourism officials attributed the growth partly to the 200,000-square-foot expansion of the 1.8-million-square-foot convention center and a surge in attendees to conferences held at the facility, including the North American Music Merchants show, the Natural Products Expo West, the OC Auto Show and VidCon, a conference for online video enthusiasts.

Anaheim also is home to Disneyland and California Adventure Park, two of the most popular theme parks in the country.

“Tourism means an increase in jobs, revenue for small businesses and is a key spoke in our local economy’s wheel,” said Jay Burress, president and chief executive officer of Visit Anaheim.

Neighboring Los Angeles County also set a record for drawing big-spending tourists in 2017, marking the seventh straight year that the previous record was broken.

The county hosted 48.3 million visitors in 2017, a 2.2% increase over the record 47.3 million tourists in 2016. But the number of international visitors to the U.S. has been dropping since 2016, plunging even further since the start of 2017.

Tourism experts blame the drop on a strong U.S. dollar, which makes visiting the U.S. more expensive, plus increased security measures to enter the country and harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric from the Trump administration.

Anaheim tourism officials said they won’t know how the decline in international tourism has affected the city’s visitation numbers until they get more detailed data on foreign visitors in May.

Florida Tourism Statistics for 2021 and early figures for 2022 show that visitor numbers have nearly recovered to their pre-pandemic 2019 numbers despite a very slow recovery from international visitors, especially from Canada.

According to statistics from VISIT FLORIDA Research , record numbers of visitors came to Florida for nine consecutive years in a row between 2011 and 2019, crashed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the various global lockdowns and then started to recover in 2021.

*In 2009, VISIT FLORIDA changed its Florida visitor study estimation methodology; therefore, estimates made prior to that year are not directly comparable. In 2022 they further refined their estimating for Canadian and other overseas visitors

Florida Tourism Statistics in 2021 and 2022

The latest data from VISIT FLORIDA Research has shown that visitor numbers to Florida in 2021 and the first three quarters of 2022 are recovering back towards their pre-pandemic 2019 figures despite a slow recovery from international visitors. Many international markets were prohibited from entry into the USA until November 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the USA.

In fact, Columbia which was not subject to any travel bans with 0.71 million visitors came out on top for all international visitors, beating Canada with just 0.58 million (down from over 4 million in 2019).

Domestic visitor numbers surged with over 117 million (a new record) up 55% on 2020 whilst total visitor numbers increased to 122 million.

Top out-of-state domestic US visitors were from Georgia 9.5%, New York 9.3% and Alabama 6.4%.

The international breakdown by country showed the only gains were from South American countries that were not subject to travel bans (2020 figures in brackets):

  • Canada 0.58 million (1.36 million)
  • United Kingdom 0.14 million (0.18 million)
  • Brazil 0.13 million (0.29 million)
  • Columbia 0.71 million (0.17 million)
  • Argentina 0.23 million (0.15 million)

Preliminary figures for the first three quarters of 2022 are showing further improvements:

  • In quarter 1 of 2022, total visitor numbers were up 38.3% on the same period in 2021
  • In Quarter 2 the figures were up 5.6% on 2021 and actually 4.5% up on 2019
  • In Quarter 3 total visitor numbers were up 15.3% on 2021

The last two quarters of 2021 also showed an increase on the same quarters in 2019.

Barring further problems, 2022 could well set a new record and put Florida back on top again.

The final 2022 figures are expected in May/June 2023.

How Many Tourists Visit Florida Each Year?

Florida’s great climate makes it a year-round destination for both vacationers and business and leisure conventions. It is also a great draw for college students on spring break and snowbirds during the cold winter months in the North Eastern seaboard.

Over the last 10 years, visitor numbers have for the most part continued to grow.

In 2013 an estimated 94.7 million tourists visited Florida in total, up 3.6% on 2012 and then in 2014 that number grew to 97.35 million, a 2.8% increase on 2013.

In 2015 despite a small fall in international visitors, overall growth was around 6.5% topping the 100 million mark and reaching a record near 105 million visitors. A further 5.9% increase in 2016 saw numbers reach nearly 113 million.

Though international numbers continued to fall, especially from South America, overall 2017 and then 2018 and 2019 were record-breaking years with over 131 million visitors in 2019, despite the impact of hurricanes like Irma and the red tide outbreaks.

Of the major international countries, Canada continued to show growth and Brazil had started to climb again.

These figures demonstrated that for the ninth year running, Florida was still the “Number One” US attraction for holidaymakers with year-round appeal and that it had bounced back following the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

In 2019, domestic visitors still made up the lion’s share at over 116 million, a 3.7% increase, with Canada in second place and the United Kingdom in third place. In 2020, there was a 29.7% drop in domestic visitor numbers, a 64.5% drop for Canada and a 70.4% drop for international.

The biggest change in the last couple of years is the drop in visitor numbers from overseas, particularly in South America, and specifically from Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. This was partly due to economic and political turmoil coupled with a poor economy and not being part of the US Visa Waiver Program .

For most of 2020 and 2021, the biggest factor was when the global COVID-19 pandemic struck the USA and it effectively went into lockdown, though this varied by state.

Historical International Visitor Numbers to Florida

Orlando Visitor Numbers in 2021

With its multiple conference facilities and theme parks , Orlando hosts the largest number of visitors to Florida each year resulting in tourism being the largest private employer in the Orlando area.

In recent years theme parks have seen larger numbers of spring breakers wishing to spend time in the theme parks rather than the beach resorts. It is estimated that Walt Disney World receives over 50 million visitors each year, the most visited vacation resort in the world.

Visit Orlando produces annual visitor statistics and they estimated there were 59.3 million visitors to Orlando in 2021 which is a big increase on 2020 with 35.3 million but well down on the record over 75 million in both 2019 and 2018.

The figure of 59.3 million breaks down into 49.7 million domestic leisure visitors, 7.5 million domestic business visitors and about 2.1 million overseas visitors.

The Orange County Convention Center saw nearly 1 million visitors with over 40 million transiting through Orlando International Airport (MCO).

Visitors to Orlando bring in over $4bn in state and local taxes from hotels and businesses.

However, in 2020, that figure crashed to just 35.3 million visitors. International travel was down by 75%, not helped by the travel ban into the USA from so many countries.

Before the pandemic struck, in 2019 Orlando witnessed record-breaking numbers with 75.8 million visitors overall, 69.3 million domestic and 6.5 million overseas making it the most visited destination in the USA, beating New York.

Orlando International Airport maintained its position as the busiest airport in Florida, with 50.1 million travellers to the airport, a 6.7% increase on 2018.

Miami Visitor Numbers in 2021

Though Miami lacks theme parks it still has a lot to offer with great beaches, casinos, cruises to the Caribbean and beyond, culture and the lure of the Florida Keys.

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau publish annual visitor numbers to Miami. In 2021, Miami played host to some 24.2 million visitors matching the pre-pandemic numbers of 2019.

Domestic visitors made up 8.7 million of the overnight guests and 3.4 million of the day trippers plus about 3.5 million Florida residents overnight and the same number of day trippers.

There were around 5.1 million international visitors, the largest group were from Columbia with 0.50 million.

Like Orlando and Florida as a whole, Miami was also hit badly by the COVID-19 pandemic particularly in 2020 with only 11.6 million visitors, 7.9 million overnight and 3.7 day trippers. This was 52% down on 2019.

In 2019, there were estimated to be a record 24.2 million visitors, 16.3 million overnight and 7.9 million day trippers.

In 2018, the figures were 23.3 million, 16.5 million overnight and 6.8 million day trippers.

Below you will find historical figures for Florida for the last couple of years.

Florida Tourism Statistics in 2020

VISIT FLORIDA Research figures for 2020 showed a significant decline compared to 2019, especially in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Overall, quarter 1 was down by 14.5%, quarter 2 by a massive 66.6% and quarter 3 by 31.4%. Quarter 4 figures showed a drop of 31.9%.

Total visitor numbers to Florida in 2020 were just over 79 million of which over 75 million were from the United States.

The international breakdown by country figures showed large losses (2019 figures in brackets):

  • Canada 1.36 million (4.09 million)
  • United Kingdom 0.18 million (1.33 million)
  • Brazil 0.29 million (1.30 million)
  • Columbia 0.17 million (0.55 million)
  • Argentina 0.15 million (0.56 million)

With the closing of the borders to many countries, there was around a 75% decrease in overseas visitors whereas domestic USA visitor numbers were only down by around 35%.

One of President Donald Trump’s last actions before he left office on January 20, 2021, was to rescind the overseas travel ban that came into effect in early 2020 but before it was due to take effect, new President, Joe Biden, reintroduced it and actually added another country (South Africa) to the list.

So the question “Is Florida open to visitors?” was a moot point as anyone who had been in the following countries in the last 14 days was still banned from entering the United States:

  • European Schengen area (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City)
  • United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)
  • Republic of Ireland
  • South Africa

These bans were finally lifted in November 2021.

Florida Tourism Statistics in 2019

Total visitor numbers to Florida in 2019 were over 131 million of which over 116 million were domestic travellers from the United States. This represented a 3.8% increase on 2018.

Looking at the 2019 international numbers (2018 figures in brackets):

  • Canada 4.09 million (3.55 million)
  • United Kingdom 1.33 million (1.50 million)
  • Brazil 1.30 million (1.22 million)
  • Columbia 0.55 million (0.60 million)
  • Argentina 0.56 million (0.65 million)

Overseas tourists showed a 0.1% increase compared to 2018.

In prior years, the United Kingdom (UK) was always top of the international tourist list behind Canada but in 2011 the UK at 1.3 million was knocked off the second spot by Brazil with 1.5 million visitors. Brazil has now slipped back to third place behind the UK.

Comparing these figures from as far back as 2010, the biggest gains in percentage terms came from emerging markets like Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil reflecting the impact of the economic downturn in Western Europe.

Florida Tourism Statistics In Previous Years

The breakdown for 2009 was an estimated 71.2 million domestic (US) visitors plus a further 2.6 million from Canada.

Visitors from the United Kingdom were in third spot with 1.2 million down 12% on 2008 whereas Brazil was in fourth place with 0.7 million, up 29%. In 2010 Brazil’s visitor numbers topped the 1 million mark.

Tourists spend over $60 billion per annum in Florida bringing in nearly $4 billion in sales tax revenues (a quarter of all sales tax revenues) and creating over 1 million jobs in the tourist industry.

Another interesting statistic is the amount of money spent by foreign tourists and again Brazilians spent far more per person than say visitors from the United Kingdom, in fact, they spent twice as much, taking advantage of low prices and a favourable exchange rate at the time.

To cater for this increase in Brazilian visitors, all the main theme parks started employing Portuguese-speaking workers and launched websites in Portuguese.

Walt Disney World Statistics

With the initial success of Disneyland in the mid to late 1950s, Walt Disney set his sights on building another theme park, only this time on a much grander scale. After years in development, Walt’s vision became a reality when Disney World opened the gates of Magic Kingdom on October 1st, 1971. However, this momentous day came five years after Walt Disney succumbed to lung cancer, and thus, he was not able to witness the early and later successes of the park.

Although some elements of Disney World have slightly different outcomes than what Walt originally envisioned, we think he’d be pleased with how the park has evolved over the years, the giant it is today, the positive influence Disney World has had on society and culture along the way. The eye-popping Disney World statistics we discuss in this article really tell the story of Walt’s vision becoming a reality.

With an average annual attendance of over 58 million visitors, Walt Disney World is the most visited vacation resort in the world . The amount of manpower, creativity, machinery, and technology involved in keeping Disney World humming and innovating is simply astounding. LA welcomed about 40 million visitors in 2021, a sign that the destination is starting to rebound after the pandemic. Full recovery is expected in 2023, when 51 million visitors are expected to visit.

In 2021, leisure travel bounced back but business travel continued to lag. International travel, however, still has a long way to go to reach pre-pandemic numbers.

LA Tourists in 2020

The pandemic nearly decimated LA’s tourism sector, especially international arrivals. In 2020, LA’s visitor count plunged to 27 million, a 53% decrease from 2019. Tourism revenue fell to a low of $10 billion, compared to $25 billion the year prior.

LA Tourists in 2019

A record-breaking 51 million people traveled to LA in 2019. Before the Covid-19 outbreak, the city achieved nine straight years of record visitation numbers. In 2018, the destination celebrated a milestone of 50 million visitors for the first time.

Business | draymond green ejected from warriors-magic game, business | disneyland is now a historic theme park district: what’s that mean for future projects.

how many tourists visit disneyland each year

The DisneylandForward environmental impact report identifies the potential Disneyland Theme Park Historic District as eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places – which automatically places the district on the California Register of Historical Resources .

The DisneylandForward proposal seeks to update a 1990s Anaheim city plan to allow for a mix of theme park, hotel, retail, dining and entertainment on the eastern and western edges of the Disneyland resort.

A major impact of the DisneylandForward proposal would be to Disneyland itself – a historic landmark more than 50 years old that is considered a significant cultural resource. The study notes that change has been the most enduring constant of the 68-year-old theme park – meaning the DisneylandForward project would be historically appropriate.

“There have been continuous changes to the park that started upon its opening,” according to a report created by the Historic Resources Group for the DisneylandForward EIR. “Disney is the steward of its history, but also responsible for sustaining the viability of the theme park and ensuring that it is maintained and updated in order to reflect current needs and expectations.”

What does the historic designation mean for future Disneyland renovations, projects or expansions?

Disneyland is required to have any substantial changes to the park documented by a historian who would submit digital copies to the city of Anaheim and the Walt Disney Company archives.

There are plenty of rides and attractions at Disneyland that could be considered cultural landmarks, but only three places at the 68-year-old Anaheim theme park have been singled out as historic in the DisneylandForward EIR.

The Main Street Railroad Depot , Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and Hungry Bear restaurant have been listed on the California Register of Historic Places and are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, according to the DisneylandForward Environmental Impact Report.

“Over the years, many rides have come and gone in the park, but the overall design, concept, setting, feeling and historical associations have remained constant and unaltered,” according to the DisneylandForward EIR.

The DisneylandForward report singled out the three individual historic places as representative of the first three decades of the park – one each from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s.

The 1955 Main Street Railroad Depot at the entrance of the park was identified in 2005 as eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places because of the Disneyland train station’s “association with significant events and persons as well as significance related to architecture and engineering within the amusement park property type,” according to the EIR.

The 1966 Pirates of the Caribbean ride in New Orleans Square was identified as eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places because it represented a good example of the first phase of renovation and expansion in the 1960s at Disneyland.

The 1972 Hungry Bear restaurant in Critter Country was also identified as a good example of 1970s renovations and expansions at Disneyland.

Why are these three Disneyland locations considered historic and not others?

The Main Street Railroad Depot, Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and Hungry Bear restaurant were designated historic as part of Federal Communications Commission approvals that were required during the installation of cell phone communication facilities in 2004.

A single-family home that was the first building at the Disneyland theme park is also included in the DisneylandForward EIR as a Historically Significant Structure. The Pope House , which was relocated to the theme park in 1955, served as the home of Owen and Dolly Pope.

The Popes managed the horses at the Circle D Corral and moved into the house next to the 10-acre pony farm three days before Disneyland opened to the public in 1955. The Popes moved out of the house in 1971 when they relocated to the Magic Kingdom in Florida to supervise the building of the Tri-Circle-D Ranch.

The Pope House was relocated to a backstage area of Disneyland next to Ball Road when the Circle D Corral was removed to make way for the construction of the Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge-themed land.

The California Register of Historic Places recognizes and protects landmarks of architectural, historical, archeological and cultural significance that are associated with important people, master craftsmanship or historical significance. Places can’t be listed as historic over an owner’s objections.

We will also examine the factors influencing tourist numbers and the challenges and opportunities faced by the tourism industry in Florida.

By understanding the significance of tourism in Florida, both for its residents and the local economy, we can gain insights into how this industry contributes to the state’s growth and development. So, let’s embark on this journey and uncover the wonders of Florida tourism.

Methodology

In order to accurately analyze the number of tourists visiting Florida each year, extensive data collection and analysis methods are employed. The main sources of data include surveys, visitor centers, hotel occupancy records, airport arrivals, and other tourism-related entities.

State and local tourism agencies in Florida gather information through visitor surveys conducted at various points of entry, such as airports, train stations, and visitor information centers. These surveys collect data on visitors’ demographics, purpose of visit, length of stay, spending patterns, and more.

Additionally, hotels and other accommodation providers in Florida maintain records of guest arrivals, which are essential for determining tourist numbers. Hotel occupancy rates and reservation data are valuable indicators of the tourism industry’s performance and give insights into trends and demand fluctuations.

Another important data source is airport arrivals, which provide a snapshot of the number of tourists traveling to Florida by air. Airports across the state track and compile data on the number of passengers arriving on both domestic and international flights.

Furthermore, aggregated data from travel agencies, tour operators, and cruise lines is also utilized to estimate tourist numbers. These entities track bookings, itineraries, and passenger numbers, which provide valuable information about the flow of tourists to Florida.

To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data, statistical methods such as sampling and extrapolation are employed. Sampling involves collecting data from a representative subset of the population, while extrapolation involves estimating the total number of tourists based on the collected sample data.

It is important to note that while these methodologies provide valuable insights into tourist numbers, they are subject to limitations. For instance, not all tourists may participate in surveys, and some may choose not to disclose certain information. Additionally, factors such as seasonal variations, economic conditions, and unforeseen events can influence tourist numbers and may lead to fluctuations in data.

Despite these limitations, the methodologies used in collecting and analyzing data on Florida tourist visits provide a comprehensive and reliable picture of the state’s tourism industry. By combining data from various sources and employing statistical techniques, researchers and policymakers can gain valuable insights into the trends, patterns, and economic impact of tourism in Florida.

One of the defining moments in Florida’s tourism history was the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971. In recent years, Florida has witnessed a surge in international tourist arrivals. The state’s proximity to Latin America and its connection to major air hubs have made it an appealing destination for visitors from countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Germany.

The impact of hurricanes and other natural disasters on Florida’s tourism industry cannot be ignored. The state has faced several devastating storms throughout its history, which have temporarily impacted tourist numbers. However, Florida’s resilience and commitment to rebuilding and recovery have allowed the tourism industry to bounce back.

Overall, historical trends indicate a consistent and steady growth in Florida tourism. Factors Affecting Tourist Numbers in Florida

Several factors influence the number of tourists visiting Florida each year. Understanding these factors is essential for anticipating trends and making informed decisions to bolster the state’s tourism industry. Let’s explore some of the key factors that affect tourist numbers in Florida.

1. Weather: Florida’s climate, with its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine, is a major draw for tourists. Seasonal variations, such as hurricanes during the summer months, can impact visitor numbers. Mild winters attract visitors from colder regions, while hot and humid summers may deter some travelers. Weather patterns significantly influence the timing and volume of tourists visiting Florida.

2. Economic Conditions: Economic factors play a significant role in travel decisions. Strength or weakness in the global and domestic economies impacts consumer spending and travel budgets. During economic downturns, people tend to cut back on discretionary spending, including travel. Conversely, during periods of economic prosperity, more people have the financial means to travel, resulting in increased tourist numbers.

3. Travel Restrictions and Policies: Travel restrictions and policies imposed by governments have a direct impact on tourist numbers. Visa requirements, entry restrictions, and security concerns can deter visitors from certain countries. Additionally, changes in currency exchange rates can also affect travel decisions as affordability becomes a consideration for tourists.

4. Marketing and Promotion Efforts: Effective marketing and promotion strategies greatly influence tourist numbers. The state of Florida, along with regional tourism boards and local businesses, invests in marketing campaigns to attract visitors. The use of various media channels, digital marketing platforms, and partnerships with travel agencies can significantly impact the visibility and appeal of Florida as a tourist destination.

5. Major Events and Festivals: Major events, festivals, and conferences held in Florida attract large numbers of tourists. Events like the Miami Art Week, Miami Boat Show, Daytona 500, and Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights draw crowds from far and wide. These events have a significant impact on tourism by attracting visitors specifically during those periods.

6. Natural Disasters: Florida is susceptible to natural disasters such as hurricanes. Severe storms can result in temporary disruptions to tourism, affecting visitor numbers. While the impact is typically temporary, the perception of the state’s vulnerability to natural disasters can influence travel decisions for some individuals in the short term.

7. Changing Travel Preferences: The evolving preferences of travelers, including shifting interests, emerging trends, and new travel experiences, influence tourist numbers. Changes in consumer behavior, such as a growing interest in eco-tourism, adventure travel, or experiential tourism, can impact visitor numbers in specific regions or attractions.

It is important to note that these factors are interconnected, and their influence on tourist numbers can vary. Additionally, unforeseen events such as pandemics or geopolitical events can significantly impact tourism patterns. The tourism industry in Florida faces both challenges and opportunities as it strives to attract and retain visitors. Understanding these factors is crucial for industry stakeholders to navigate the ever-changing landscape. Let’s explore some of the key challenges and opportunities for Florida’s tourism industry.

Challenges:

  • Pandemic Impact: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on global tourism, including the tourism industry in Florida. Travel restrictions, lockdowns, and reduced consumer confidence have disrupted travel plans and led to a decline in visitor numbers. The industry must adapt to new health and safety protocols and regain the trust of travelers.
  • Natural Disasters: Florida is prone to natural disasters such as hurricanes, which can disrupt travel and require extensive recovery efforts. The industry must have contingency plans in place to ensure the safety of visitors and the quick recovery of tourism infrastructure.
  • Competition: Florida faces competition from other popular tourist destinations both within the United States and internationally. To remain competitive, the state must continue to innovate, diversify its offerings, and invest in marketing and promotion efforts.
  • Sustainability: The tourism industry has a responsibility to promote sustainable practices to protect Florida’s natural resources and minimize its environmental impact. Balancing tourism growth with environmental conservation and addressing concerns such as waste management and carbon emissions is a key challenge.

Opportunities:

  • Diversification of Offerings: Florida is not just about theme parks and beaches. The state has a rich cultural heritage, vibrant arts scene, and diverse ecosystems that can be further developed and promoted to attract a wider range of tourists.
  • Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism: Florida’s abundance of natural beauty, including its national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and waterways, provides immense opportunities for ecotourism and adventure tourism. By highlighting these unique experiences, Florida can attract nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and eco-conscious travelers.
  • Digital Innovation: Technology and digital platforms present opportunities to enhance the visitor experience. From mobile apps for attractions and virtual reality experiences to personalized marketing campaigns and data analytics, leveraging digital platforms can offer unique and immersive experiences for tourists.
  • Culinary Tourism: Florida’s diverse culinary scene can be a significant draw for food enthusiasts. Promoting culinary tourism by highlighting local cuisines, food festivals, and farm-to-table experiences can attract foodies and contribute to the local economy.

By addressing challenges proactively and capitalizing on opportunities, Florida’s tourism industry can continue to evolve and thrive. By diversifying offerings, promoting sustainability, capitalizing on digital innovation, and tapping into niche markets such as ecotourism and culinary tourism, the state can continue to attract a diverse range of visitors and maintain its status as a global tourism powerhouse.
