WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO An insider's Guide to Texas Day Trips

The Texas tourism board wasn't kidding when they said the Lone Star State was "like a whole other country." Enjoy award-winning art museums and mouth-watering meals in dynamic cities like Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Before your cruise take a walk on Texas' wild side, whether you camp on the beach in Galveston Island State Park, create a cowboy experience at a cattle ranch, or sunbathe along its hundreds-of-miles-long coastline.

If you do happen to plan your Texas vacation during the "winter" (a term that's relative around these parts) months of January and February, just pack a jacket — and an umbrella. While temperatures in Texas rarely fall below freezing — especially not in coastal Galveston — you never know when a scattered shower will pass. Likewise, make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and drink lots of water during Texas' long summer, which can begin setting in as early as April and can linger until October or November.

Texas Brisket BBQ Cuisine

The Beauty of Brisket

Barbecue can tie together your Texas travel, if you let it. Make sure to enjoy at least one plate of brisket, slow-smoked beef breast meat as famous for its melt-in-your-mouth texture as it is for the crispy layer of skin. Trim your meal with authentic Texas Fixin's like fried okra and baked beans, then wash it all down with a towering glass of sweet tea, and finish it off with a slice of pecan pie à la mode.

Chile con Queso

Queso Cravings

Order chile con queso cheese on your trip, but try not to think of it as a mere appetizer. With spicy pico de gallo and crumbly chorizo mixed into its creamy cheese, queso is a meal in itself and maybe even its own food group. Other Tex-Mex classics include burritos, chimichangas and breakfast tacos (in case you can't wait until lunch or dinner to get your fix).

Chops Grille Steak Asparagus Close Up

Two Takes on Steak

You simply can't eat too much meat on your Texas getaway. Stick your fork into a juicy T-bone, a tender and flavorful loin steak that's rightly the claim to fame of the Texas steak world. Not a purist, or just seeking something more decadent? Order chicken-fried steak, which is exactly as over-the-top as it sounds.

Customers Love Our Rockwall Boat Cruises!

This was the highlight of our visit. Birthday celebration for my 38 year old son. Relaxing, watching the sun set with fun music playing. We did the sunset cruise for 1 1/2 hours then have dinner at one of the nice restaurants walking distance from the dock. Just a 30 minute drive from Dallas. Well worth it.

Wow we had a wonderful time aboard the captain and crew were fantastic I would recommend this trip to everyone I know and we will definitely come again this summer so thanks again to harbor Cruise of Rockwall and the captain and crew can't wait to see y'all again.

We had a great time on the cruise. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My grandparents were in town from St. Louis so they loved the smooth ride. We brought wine and a cheese plate and had a wonderful time. The live music was great and entertaining!

We cruised for my birthday on 8/18 and it was the most fun! The staff was so kind and attentive and helpful, the food was tasty, and the BYOB idea is fantastic. It was a combination of relaxing and exciting. And perfect for my party of 12!

This is a must go place in Dallas. Beautiful weather wonderful live music ( I don’t remember his name but he did a wonderful job). Sunset was amazing and it was beautiful view from the cruise. Captain Mike was very friendly and helpful. Strongly recommend this to everyone who is looking to spend quality time with friends and family and don’t forget to BYOB

Was asked to help captain the ship, but did not know about the awesome music upstairs until I picked up the musician and guests. I know the guest had to have had a great time because the music was awesome. That along with the beautiful sunset...what an evening ride.

Carnival cancels cruises after ship catches fire

“Carnival does not expect any impact to the next Carnival Freedom voyage scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday, March 25,” said the Carnival Cruise Line in a Saturday X post .

By Monday, the company realized that the ship would not be able to sail. In fact, two Carnival cruises expected to depart from Port Canaveral, Fla., this week after a fire on board the Carnival Freedom ship.

A press release published by The National Desk explained that: “Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral.”

In a series of X responses posted Saturday, the cruise line revealed that a fire was reported on the Freedom – a 110,000 gross ton ship that can carry 2,980 passengers – at approximately 3:15 pm EDT that day, while the ship was around 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. This fire was on the vessel’s port side in an exhaust funnel.

At the time of the fire, the ship was “headed to Freeport after a cancelled call to Princess Cay due to weather,” said Carnival.

“The captain has made multiple announcements to guests and crew and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from all open decks,” said the company on X . “There are no injuries. The port side portion of the funnel has fallen onto Deck 10 and the fire response is putting out the flames.”

It also said the ship’s fire response team acted quickly and that the captain sailed towards heavy rain to maximize efforts to put the fire out. Some eyewitnesses reported seeing a lightning strike, and Carnival said that possibility was being investigated Saturday. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the incident.

After the funnel was stabilized, the ship arrived in Port Canaveral Monday. From there, the ship needed to return to Freeport for repairs.

“We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both cancelled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us,” said Carnival in a statement.

This is at least the second time that a Carnival Freedom exhaust tunnel needed up on fire. Per CBS News , it also went up in flames in May 2022 when the ship was in Grand Turk on a five-day cruise from Port Canaveral. There were no injuries connected to that fire, said the report.

Earlier this year passengers on another cruise line, Royal Caribbean, dealt with water instead of fire when rooms started to flood after the Serenade of the Seas was caught in rough water off the coast of South America.

“One set of elevators and six rooms were impacted by some of the rain,” they said in an emailed statement cited by USA Today . “Our team on board is managing the minor cleanup and elevator repairs.”

When asked Tuesday whether the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge would impact Carnival cruises, the company said : “Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic accident. It is premature for us to comment on possible impacts to upcoming sailings,”

UH March Madness roundup: How to get Sweet 16 tickets, and No. 1 Coogs' tribute to Reggie Chaney

Greg Bailey Image

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The University of Houston Cougars men's basketball team returned to the city early Monday morning after working overtime to clinch a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.

The No. 1-seeded team in the South Region of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament held a 13-point lead late in regulation against the No. 9 Texas A &M Aggies on Sunday night.

UH turned an assured victory and trip to Dallas into a fight for its tournament life when the Aggies erased the double-digit advantage, punctuated by Andersson Garcia's buzzer-beating three-pointer to tie.

Houston, though, held on for the 100-95 win in the extra five-minute period.

The Coogs get time to breathe before heading up Interstate 45 to American Airlines Center for their fifth consecutive Sweet Sixteen matchup. They face the storied Duke Blue Devils program for a spot in the Elite Eight.

However, after the final buzzer, much of the talk was about who UH senior Jamal Shead and others alluded to postgame.

Fallen former teammate honored

dallas cruises

"Our kids didn't play together. They played for each other, and that's a big difference in that," head coach Kelvin Sampson summed up the Cougars' thrilling win over A &M.

Afterward, UH players admitted they couldn't watch much of the overtime period after the Aggies used a 13-3 run in the final 84 seconds to force the extra period. But the Cougars said they always believed they would find a way to win and advance.

"Us winning with four fouled-out players is a perfect description of the program and the culture behind it," Emanuel Sharp said after the sophomore from Tampa scored a career-high 30 points to lead UH.

Sharp had to watch from the bench with fellow starters L.J. Cryer, Jamal Shead, and Ja'vier Francis. At the same time, reserves like Ramon Walker and walk-on Ryan Elvin battled to preserve UH's lead in overtime.

Walker came on to play a vital role after many had declared his season over following a knee injury.

Instead, the Shadow Creek High School product kept working behind the scenes to prepare for the postseason. Walker was one of many UH players who cried as they tried to describe what they had done to escape a great effort from the Aggies.

"Joy and relief," Walker said as he took a deep breath at his locker.

Walker was one of the Cougars who mentioned a spirited halftime speech from Sampson when he asked his team, "What would Reggie do?" referencing Reggie Chaney, the popular UH player who died last year.

"We definitely did that for Reggie (Chaney)," senior forward J'Wan Roberts said.

"I just miss my dog," Jamal Shead said about his former teammate.

Sweet Sixteen tickets

The Houston Cougars afforded their fans a more accessible and affordable trip to see them in March Madness.

The Coogs' No. 1 seeding and second overall allowed them to get at least the next best preference of region when the tournament was organized. Lucky for them, Dallas was the South Region's Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight site.

A roundtrip plane ticket to Memphis for the first two rounds now transitions to a four-hour car ride up I-45.

On Monday, the university reminded fans they would need to request tickets for UH's games played at American Airlines Center on Friday and possibly Sunday.

A look at UH's ticketing website showed seats averaging $175-$180. Those wanting to purchase had a 5 p.m. deadline Monday to reserve.

The tip-off time on Friday is set for 8:39 p.m. but may slide depending on the length of the earlier North Carolina State-Marquette game before it.

The Sweet Sixteen matchup marks the first time the historic men's programs faced off, even with Duke's 46 tournament appearances to UH's 25.

Shawn Johnson's kids are most excited for THIS part of their trip to the 2024 Olympics

While shawn johnson east is thrilled to cheer for her fellow athletes at the 2024 olympics, she told e news that when it comes to impressing her kids, they have competition from an unexpected source., by sarah grossbart | e online • published march 24, 2024 • updated on march 24, 2024 at 10:56 am.

Attending the 2024 Olympics in Paris this summer, Shawn Johnson East and her husband Andrew East are stoked to root for their fellow American athletes as they attempt feats in basketball, cycling, swimming, and, of course, gymnastics.

Their kids, meanwhile, are mostly cheering for Mickey Mouse.

"I don't think they're going to appreciate or understand any of it," the Olympic gymnast , who left the 2008 Games with three silver medals, plus gold in the balance beam, told E! News in an exclusive interview. "Which we understand. We're going to Disneyland Paris. I think they're most excited for that."

Well, at least Drew , 4, and little brother Jett , 2, are voicing their thrill over the chance to meet up with Elsa and Cinderella . Little brother Bear , who joined the den Dec. 12 , is mostly just along for the ride.

While Johnson acknowledges "it's comical that we're going all the way to Paris to go to Disney," she's hopeful her squad will absorb a bit of the red, white and blue spirit at the Games . "I think they'll enjoy the large green grasses," joked the 32-year-old, "and I could see my kids enjoying, like, diving, something kind of crazy, but I don't know."

She is confident, however, that daughter Drew will appreciate one part of watching Mom pull for her fellow gymnasts .

"Drew does enjoy watching gymnastics strictly for the leotards," said Johnson. "So she'll enjoy watching the leotards for maybe 20 minutes. And then we'll be good with it." As for her daredevil middle child , "Olympic skateboarding would be really fun for him to watch," Johnson said of Jett. "More of the niche sports. I don't think my family will last at swimming or basketball or anything that we genuinely want to go watch."

And then there's that other gold medal-worthy event the parents of three are prepping for, called trying not to lose a kid while navigating the packed Parisian arenas.

"The only thing that I'm nervous about with Paris is it's just a lot of people at the Olympics," explained Johnson. "There's a lot of mass crowds, there's a lot of chances to not see a little kid, which freaks me out. So I'm a little nervous for that."

But, mostly, said the longtime Olympics ambassador, with her and East, 32, having already turned pro in flying with small children, they're ready to soak it all in after missing the 2020 games while she was giving birth to Jett .

"We have traveled with our kids a lot," Johnson explained of their experienced jetsetters. "We're used to it. We did a Greek islands extravaganza last year. We've done Mexico, we go to Tijuana a lot for mission work with my family."

So she's more than confident in their abilities to nail all the moves required for a month abroad.

"We're so excited," said Johnson. "We're going to tour around Europe for almost five weeks. We're going to do it all. We're doing trains, planes, automobiles and boats."

And the pair have already earned high marks for how they're navigating their new three-kids-under-the-age-of-5 existence.

One parenting hack the athlete offers is to let yourself off the hook a bit when it comes to food. Their go-to dinners are "any meal that you can heat up very fast," Johnson noted, explaining the why behind partnering with MorningStar Farms to promote the April return of their vegan riblets. (Fans can enter to win a chance to try them first, during a lunch with the Olympian, by signing up for their "First Dibs" sweepstakes before March 29.)

She also puts a lot of emphasis on giving each of her kids as much one-on-one time as possible , while acknowledging, "you have to sacrifice time with each of them for the other." Eventually, Johnson continued, "I know it will average itself out. But we're still figuring out those logistics."

Thankfully her team remains tight as ever. "They absolutely adore him ," she said of Drew and Jett's reaction to the newest cub . "And being an only child myself, I didn't fully understand siblings until I married into a family where my husband is one of five and seeing that bond."

And now it's on a whole new level. "Seeing the bond that my kids have already is so special and something different than I'll ever experience," said Johnson. "It's just really powerful."
