Top Travel Credit Card for Each Category

Best credit cards to offer air miles redemption.

The allure of exploration has deeply woven itself into our daily lives. From crucial business meetings in Singapore to sunlit holidays in Bali, travelling has transitioned from a mere luxury to an undeniable necessity. Tapping into this shift, banks have masterfully reshaped their reward structures. Now, with the best credit card in Malaysia for travel, those points accumulated from lavish dinners or grand shopping adventures can be seamlessly converted to air miles, ushering you into a realm of travel possibilities.

The blueprint is straightforward: Spend consciously, gather those precious points, and when ready, morph them into air miles after reaching the requisite conversion mark. Yet, as is the case with many financial nuances, intricacies lurk in the shadows. Banks vary in their conversion scales, and your selection of the best credit card in Malaysia for travel can determine whether you’re taking a brief domestic hop or an expansive global journey.

Best Credit Cards To Offer Free Airport Lounge Access

The airport lounge is a peaceful sanctuary amid the hectic noise of airports. Traditionally reserved for the most affluent travellers, these lounges offer comfort and luxury. They provide a break from the regular airport hustle with comfortable seating, gourmet meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a serene ambience.

To attract the modern traveller, banks have injected their credit card programmes with various travel-centric incentives, the most notable of which is complimentary airport lounge access. Whether on business or vacation, the opportunity to rest, work, or simply have a quiet lunch can improve your travel experience.

Best Credit Card To Offer Overseas Spending

Regarding travelling, the benefits of using a credit card while buying abroad are difficult to overlook. Credit cards have upped the game by offering enticing rewards targeted expressly for overseas transactions and providing an additional safety layer by saving your funds for emergencies. There will be no more fumbling with foreign currencies or calculating conversion rates while on the road. Simply swipe and let your credit card handle the rest.

One of the primary benefits is the increased number of points or rewards you receive for each foreign transaction. Consider it a “thank you” from your bank for becoming a global citizen.

Best Credit Cards To Offer Travel Insurance Coverage

Journeys, no matter how painstakingly planned, are fraught with unforeseeable events. Any trip can be ruined by the traveller’s nightmare of delayed flights or the aggravation of misplaced luggage. While these inconveniences are unavoidable when travelling, some credit cards are stepping up to provide a safety net: complimentary travel insurance.

Such services are especially useful for frequent travellers, such as business executives. Their hectic schedules frequently leave them with little time to navigate the complexities of individual travel insurance programmes. It’s one less thing on their to-do list with a travel credit card that includes insurance.

Travel Credit Card Benefits and Features

Travel credit cards benefits and features

Navigating the enormous universe of travel perks and features can be difficult, particularly when looking for Malaysia’s best travel credit card. These cards promise more than just monetary transactions; they also provide a slew of features tailored to the world traveller in every Malaysian. Here are some things to watch for:

1. Air Miles Accumulation: The foundation of any good travel card. Air miles are earned for every ringgit spent and can be redeemed for aeroplane tickets. The best travel credit card in Malaysia will make those dream travels a reality.

2. Complimentary Lounge Access: There will be no more queuing at packed gates. Access to lounges adds a touch of luxury to your journey, providing a quiet spot to relax, eat, or even catch up on work.

3. Comprehensive Travel Insurance: Supplying protection against unforeseen flight cancellations, delays, or luggage loss.

4. Competitive Foreign Exchange Rates: When you get the most bang for your buck, international travel becomes easier. Favourable exchange rates can make a significant difference in your vacation budget.

5. Local and International Discounts: Enjoy discounts and cashback offers that make every spend worthwhile, whether dining at a local Malaysian hotspot or shopping overseas.

6. Global Acceptance: A feature that ensures your card will be accepted, whether at a remote cafe in Europe or a boutique store in Southeast Asia.

7. Emergency Assistance: Uncertainties in travel are unavoidable. However, with 24-hour emergency support, you can get aid no matter where you are.

8. Flexible Payment Options: Your financial situation is easy to control. Spread out major expenses over a number of months to guarantee that you can keep travelling without running into financial difficulties.

It’s not just about the plastic in your pocket while looking for the best travel credit card in Malaysia. It’s about the plethora of doors it opens, making every journey smooth and pleasant, whether domestic or international.

Loyalty Points: Converting Rewards into Air Miles

Loyalty is more than simply a sentiment; it’s a treasure mine of benefits waiting to be discovered. Every transaction, every swipe of your card, can pave the path for thrilling experiences and exquisite pleasures.

The frequent-flyer programme (FFP) is a golden ticket for regular travellers. It commemorates your loyalty to an airline and allows you to accrue air miles whenever you purchase flight tickets. What’s the appeal of these flight miles? Redeem your air points for free flights. Do you want to add a touch of luxury to your long-haul flight? Convert them for cabin improvements. Those same miles can get you free entry to airport lounges, which are peaceful havens.

Take the Hong Leong AirAsia Gold Visa, for example. It results from a collaboration between Hong Leong and AirAsia and serves as a light for individuals whose travel bug has bitten. Every retail transaction you make, whether at a local supermarket, an international boutique, or directly on AirAsia’s plethora of services, awards you with BiG Points – AirAsia’s own brand of air miles.

  • AirAsia Transactions: Spend RM1 and bag 6 BiG Points.
  • Overseas Transactions: Spend RM2 and earn 1 BiG Point.
  • Local Transactions: A spend of RM5 gifts you 1 BiG Point.

If you’re a budding professional with a burgeoning wanderlust, the card’s accessibility is commendable. With a minimum income requirement of just RM2,000 per month, it’s an excellent fit for those in the nascent stages of their careers yet dreaming of global adventures.

The world of travel-centric credit cards expands even further for people with a somewhat higher income group. Among the alternatives are

  • New AEON Visa Gold: Combining retail rewards with travel perks for the shopper-traveler.
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer American Express Gold: A great partnership between a global airline and a financial powerhouse.
  • UOB PRVI Miles Card: For those looking for premium travel amenities without the premium price.
  • HSBC TravelOne Credit Card: A combination of flexible rewards and extensive travel benefits.

Things You Should Know When Spending Overseas

It is exciting to embark on an international journey. But, amid all the excitement, it’s critical to grasp the dynamics of spending abroad, especially if you’re using a credit card. Here are a few things to keep in mind, particularly if you’re using the best malaysia credit card for overseas spending:

Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) Charges: When purchasing in a foreign country, shopkeepers may offer to bill you in your native currency (in this case, Malaysian Ringgit). This may appear convenient, but it frequently comes with an additional expense known as the DCC charge. It’s best to be charged in the money of the country you’re staying in.

Foreign Transaction Fees: Most credit cards charge fees for global transactions. Typically, it represents a portion of the purchase price. Some of the best travel credit cards in Malaysia reduce or waive foreign transaction fees during promotional periods.

Inform Your Bank: Banks monitor credit card transactions to avoid fraudulent activity. Sudden overseas spending can raise a red signal, causing your card to be blocked. Choosing the best Malaysia credit card for overseas spending and informing your bank of your scheduled trip is the wise option to have a good trip experience.

ATM Withdrawals: If you need to withdraw cash with your credit card, be aware that you will most likely be charged a cash advance fee and interest rates. In addition, the ATM you’re using may have its own cost. For ATM withdrawals abroad, it is normally recommended to use a debit card.

Check for Card Acceptance: While many international destinations accept credit cards, some may prefer specific card networks such as Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. Having more than one type of card or extra cash on hand is usually a good idea as a backup.

Exchange Rates: The exchange rates executed by credit card companies may not be the same as market prices. Understanding this will offer you a clearer view of your expenditures and will help you prevent unpleasant surprises when the bill arrives.

Consider Travel Insurance: As previously said, some of the best travel credit cards in Malaysia include free travel insurance. This may be helpful if an unforeseen circumstance arises abroad.

Secure Your Card: Travelling frequently means visiting lively markets or packed tourist attractions, making it critical to protect your credit card. Always store it securely and check in frequently to confirm it’s still with you.

There will be a major increase in the products and perks associated with the best travel credit card in Malaysia. As Malaysians have become increasingly adventurous travellers, the necessity for a credit card that matches their travel goals has never been greater. These cards now have many features, ranging from air mile accumulation to full travel insurance and enhanced international transaction benefits. They’ve evolved from being merely payment instruments to essential travel partners. Choosing the best travel credit card in Malaysia is more than simply purchases; it’s also about smooth global excursions. As we look at the best cards, remember that the correct card may boost your travels, providing both financially savvy and unmatched experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which travel card is best for malaysia.

Several cards, notably the Hong Leong AirAsia Gold Visa and the HSBC TravelOne Credit Card, have been identified as top contenders. However, the best travel card for Malaysia generally depends on personal tastes, travel habits, and financial factors.

Is Visa or Mastercard better for travel?

Visa and Mastercard are widely recognised worldwide and offer various travel-related benefits. The decision between Visa and Mastercard is frequently influenced by the specific perks the issuing bank provides and the card category (e.g., Platinum, Gold). Before making a decision, compare the benefits, international transaction fees, and global acceptance rates.

Which bank has no foreign transaction fee?

Many banks provide cards with no international transaction costs to entice frequent travellers. The specific bank providing this advantage may differ from one country or region to the next. Several Malaysian banks issue travel credit cards with low or no international transaction fees regularly.

Which is better for international travel credit card or debit card?

For international travel, both credit and debit cards have advantages. Credit cards frequently provide superior fraud protection, loyalty points, travel insurance, and other benefits, making them tempting for international spending. Debit cards, however, allow you to spend only the money you have available, which can aid in budgeting. Debit cards, on the other hand, may offer fewer safeguards in the event of theft or unauthorised usage. It’s common advice to carry both: a credit card for most purchases and a debit card for cash withdrawals and backup.

What is a travel money card?

Just like your normal bank card, a travel money card can be used for online and in-store purchases, as well as for cash withdrawals. However, with a travel money card, the features and fees are tailored for global usage. This may mean you get a better exchange rate, or fewer charges, in comparison to using your regular card abroad. Some travel cards - particularly travel credit cards- also offer opportunities to earn cashback and rewards for using your card internationally.

It’s worth noting that there’s not much in the market in Canada for spending in ringgit specifically - so you might find you need to shop around a bit more than you would if you were looking for a travel card for USD or GBP for example. We’ll cover some top options to consider in this guide, to get you started.

6 travel money cards for Malaysia compared

Before we get into each card option in more depth, here’s a summary of how six of the best travel money cards for Malaysia compare to each other.

The features of various travel money cards can differ significantly. Generally, travel debit cards can be convenient and relatively inexpensive to use, while travel credit cards may offer extra benefits such as cashback or rewards. However, they also come with the risk of incurring interest and late payment fees, if you don’t pay off your bill in full every time.

Travel debit cards usually allow you to easily add funds online or via a mobile app, which helps you stick to your budget and avoid overspending. Conversely, travel credit cards enable you to spend up to your credit limit, and you can pay off the balance over several months. Which is best for you will come down to how you like to manage your money - we’ll dive into a few more details about each card type, next.

What are different types of travel cards?

Broadly speaking, Canadian customers can pick a travel money card from either a traditional bank or a specialist provider, from a selection including travel debit cards, travel prepaid cards or travel credit cards. We’ll walk through what each travel money card type is, and pick out a couple of good card options, so you can compare and choose.

1. Travel debit cards

2. Travel prepaid cards

3. Travel credit cards

1. Travel Debit Cards

Specialist providers typically offer travel debit cards, which are accompanied by digital accounts that allow you to top up, hold, and exchange currency balances. Unfortunately, not many cards on offer in Canada support holding MYR - which might mean you pay a foreign transaction fee when you use your card in Malaysia.

That said, even with some fees to consider, travel debit cards usually provide a user-friendly online platform and mobile app for effortless balance top-ups, making it easier to manage your finances no matter where you are in the world.

Travel debit card Option 1: Wise

Wise is our pick for travel money debit card for Malaysia, and the only one of our selection which offers the option to hold and exchange MYR within the account.

There’s no fee to open a Wise account , and no delivery fee for your Wise card , with no minimum balance and no monthly charge . You just pay low Wise fees from 0.41% when you convert currencies, and transparent ATM fees when you exhaust the monthly free withdrawals available with your account.

No fee to open a Wise account , no minimum balance requirement

No fee to get your Wise card, free to spend any currency you hold

2 withdrawals, to 350 CAD value per month for free, then 1.5 CAD + 1.75%

Hold MYR  and 50+ other currencies, convert between them with the mid-market rate

Get local account details to receive CAD, USD and 7 other currencies for free

Travel debit card Option 2: Canada Post Cash Passport

You can pick up a Canada Post Cash Passport in your local Post Office, and top up your account in CAD. You can then switch your balance to any of the 7 supported major currencies. Unfortunately, MYR is not supported by this card, which means there’s  a foreign exchange fee of 3.25% when you spend with this card in Malaysia. You can use your Canada Post Cash Passport card in ATMs and wherever the network is supported. ATM fees apply which vary by currency.

Supports 7 major currencies, not including MYR

3.25% foreign transaction fee to spend where currencies are not supported

Variable ATM fee

1.5% fee for using your card in Canada - plus any applicable fee to convert funds back to CAD if you hold a foreign currency

Pros and cons of using debit travel cards in Malaysia

Avoid interest costs and late payment fees

Hold and exchange currencies in advance or at the time of spending

Accounts can be topped up, viewed and managed using just your phone

Safe to use, as accounts aren’t linked to your main Canadian bank account

Travel debit cards are issued on popular global payment networks

Transaction and currency conversion fees may apply

Cash back and rewards may not be available

How to choose the best travel debit card for Malaysia?

Choosing the best travel debit card for Malaysia depends on your personal preferences and financial management style. If you travel often - and not just to Malaysia - it's smart to consider an account that offers mid-market currency exchange rates and a wide selection of supported currencies, including MYR, like Wise. Canada Post also offers the Cash Passport - this card doesn’t support MYR for holding or exchange, but can be conveniently collected in your local Post Office, and as it’s not linked to your main CAD account will still add some extra security to your overseas spending.

Is there a spending limit with a travel debit card in Malaysia?

Each card provider sets their own limits for card usage, which can differ based on the type of transaction. These limits may be imposed on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. For example, there could be a restriction on the number or value of ATM withdrawals allowed per day or a cap on the value of contactless payments you can make. These limits are in place for security purposes and can usually be adjusted through the provider's app.

2. Prepaid Travel Cards

With a prepaid travel card you’ll usually need to first order a card and then add funds in CAD from your bank account or card. Once you have a balance you can then pay merchants and make cash withdrawals at home and abroad. While prepaid travel cards are usually issued on large global networks - and can therefore be used pretty widely - you may find you pay a foreign transaction fee when overseas, depending on the specific card you select.

Prepaid travel card option 1: BMO Reloadable Mastercard

The BMO Reloadable Mastercard can be topped up in CAD and used when you travel in Malaysia. You’ll pay a 2.5% foreign transaction fee when overseas, but you’ll still have the advantage that - as with other prepaid and travel cards - this card is not linked to your primary bank account, so it can increase security when spending abroad. There’s a 6.95 CAD annual fee, but as this is a purchase card rather than a credit card, there’s no interest to worry about. You just top up and you can spend up to your account balance freely.

6.95 CAD annual fee, 2.5% foreign transaction fee

5 CAD ATM fee

No interest to worry about

Manage your card online or using your phone, to top up and view balance

Add funds from BMO or other Canadian banks directly

Prepaid travel card option 2: Koho Premium Mastercard

You can get up to 2% cash back with the Koho Premium Mastercard, and there’s no foreign transaction fee to worry about. Instead, you pay a monthly card fee of 9 CAD. The basic card is free to get, or you can upgrade to a Koho metal card for 159 CAD if you want a fancier way to pay when you’re at home and abroad.

9 CAD/month premium fee

No foreign transaction fee

Earn cash back on your spending

Pros and cons of using prepaid travel cards in Malaysia

Manage your account, add more money or convert funds online or with an app

Accounts with no monthly fees are available

Issued on globally popular networks for good coverage

ATM withdrawals supported globally

Some accounts have extras like options to earn cash back or reward points

Typically only CAD supported - watch out for foreign transaction charges

Transaction fees apply to most accounts

How to choose the best travel prepaid card for Malaysia?

There’s no single best travel prepaid card for Malaysia - it’ll come down to your personal preference. If you don’t mind paying a monthly fee you might like the Koho Premium card which waives foreign transaction fees, and other charges like ATM withdrawal fees. Otherwise, if you just want a simple prepaid card and don’t mind the foreign transaction fee when you’re in Malaysia, the BMO prepaid card might suit you.

Is there a spending limit with a prepaid card in Malaysia?

Spending and withdrawal limits on prepaid travel cards can vary based on the card provider and currency. Carefully examine the terms and conditions of each provider you are considering, to make sure you pick a card that suits your specific needs and preferences, giving you peace of mind.

3. Travel Credit Cards

Travel credit cards often come with additional benefits not found in regular credit cards. These benefits can include lower or no fees for foreign transactions and the chance to earn extra rewards when using the card abroad. While travel credit cards offer safety and convenience, it's worth noting that they may be more expensive than using a debit card.

Before choosing a travel credit card, it's essential to consider factors such as fees, rates, eligibility criteria, and interest rates. Take the time to compare different options and select the one that suits you best.

Travel credit card option 1: HSBC World Elite Mastercard

The HSBC World Elite Mastercard has been optimised for overseas use, with extra rewards on international spending and travel, plus no foreign transaction fees to pay. There are lots of ways to earn rewards, including variable new customer bonus offers - the downside is that there’s an annual fee of 149 CAD, so you’ll need to check if the benefits outweigh the costs. As with any other credit card, you’ll also need to pay off your bill in full every month to avoid interest charges.

149 CAD annual fee, 5 CAD ATM withdrawal fee

Variable interest rate

Options to earn rewards, including enhanced benefits for travel spending

Travel credit card option 2: Home Trust Preferred Visa Card

The Home Trust Preferred Visa Card is a credit card with a variable interest rate, no foreign exchange fees and 1% cash back on all eligible purchases. There’s no annual fee to pay, although the ATM withdrawal fees can run pretty high - 1% or 1.5% depending on the ATM type, and the maximum cap is 15 CAD for some withdrawals.

No annual fee, no foreign transaction fee

1% cash back on all eligible purchases

ATM fees apply, which are set as a percentage, and can run pretty high

Pros and cons of using credit cards in Malaysia

Enjoy peace of mind with zero liability policies offered by some cards

Spread the cost of your travel expenses over several months

Some cards have no foreign transaction fees, saving you money on international purchases

Exchange rates typically offered by card networks are usually fair

Earn cash back and rewards on your spending with select cards, making your travel even more rewarding.

Interest charged if you don’t repay in full every month

Eligibility rules apply

How to choose the best travel credit card for Malaysia?

Selecting the best travel credit card for Malaysia largely depends on individual preferences. If you aim to earn rewards and cashback on your foreign transactions, the Home Trust Preferred Visa may be a suitable option as it does not have a foreign transaction fee and provides cash back on all purchases. Whichever card you’re considering you’ll want to weigh up the potential fees you’ll need to pay against the rewards you can earn to make sure it’s worthwhile.

If you regularly travel to Malaysia or further afield, getting a travel money card which supports the currencies you need frequently can help you save money. Travel money cards have different features, and can be picked up via regular banks, online specialists and even the Post Office.

You could opt for a low cost travel debit card which comes with a linked account to hold a selection of currencies including MYR - like the Wise account. Or you might prefer a prepaid travel money card like the Koho Premium Mastercard which has monthly fees in exchange for features like no foreign transaction charges - handy if you use it abroad often. Finally, another option is to get a travel credit card either to earn cashback and rewards, or to avoid foreign transaction fees.

The good news is that the Canadian market is well served for all types of travel money cards - use this guide to start your research and pick the right option for your specific needs.

FAQ - Best travel cards for Malaysia

You can usually make cash withdrawals with a credit card in Malaysia at any ATM that supports your card network. You’ll often find that a fee applies, and you may start to accumulate interest on the withdrawn amount immediately. Travel money debit cards from providers like Wise and Canada Post can be a lower cost option for cash withdrawals overseas.

You can use your debit card anywhere you see the card network’s logo displayed. Visa and Mastercard networks are very well supported globally, including in Malaysia, making these good options to look out for when you pick your travel debit card for Malaysia.

Prepaid cards from reputable providers are safe to use at home and abroad. They aren’t linked to your main bank account which can offer extra peace of mind, and may also make it easier to manage your travel budget. However, you’ll need to check the card features and fees carefully to make sure you're getting the best match for your needs.

What is a foreign transaction fee?

A foreign transaction fee is a percentage fee charged by your bank or card issuer every time you spend or make a withdrawal with your credit, debit or prepaid card, in a foreign currency. That means that foreign transaction fees can apply when you travel and spend or make ATM withdrawals overseas, or when you’re shopping online with retailers based overseas, and spending in foreign currencies.

Some banks, specialist providers and card issuers waive foreign transaction fees - and others have fairly low fees which can still make them worth considering. We’ve got a few good options to consider coming up later in this article.

How do foreign transaction fees work?

If your bank or card issuer charges a foreign transaction fee, you’ll find that an extra percentage fee is added onto your bill whenever you use your credit, debit or prepaid card to spend in a foreign currency.

When you pay in a foreign currency, you’ll usually find your spending is converted back to ringgit  using the bank or card issuer’s exchange rate. The foreign transaction fee is then calculated as a percentage of the dollar amount, and also deducted from your balance (for a debit card) or added to your bill (when you spend with a credit card).

How much are foreign transaction fees?

As we mentioned earlier, the good news is that not all banks and card issuers charge foreign transaction fees. However, the bad news is that if your bank does use foreign transaction fees, they can be pretty steep - often around 3% of the dollar amount you spend.

That quickly mounts up . Say you’re on vacation, and spend 5,000 MYR in total on shopping and eating out. The foreign transaction fee alone adds 150 ringgit  to the total bill - and this rises to 450 ringgit  in foreign transaction fees if you’re on a longer break and end up spending 15,000 MYR, for example.

How to get a card with low or no foreign transaction fees in Malaysia

The exact steps you need to take to get a card with no foreign transaction fee in Malaysia may vary depending on the provider you select. However, in most cases, if you’ve got a full set of ID and proof of address documents, and you’re a Malaysian  resident, you’ll be able to get your account all set up, and your card ordered, online or through the bank or provider’s app.

As an example, let’s look at how to get a Wise international debit card in Malaysia :

Download the Wise app or head to the Wise desktop site

Click ‘Open an account’ and enter your email address - you can also register using a Facebook, Google or Apple ID

Follow the prompts to enter your personal and contact information

Upload your MyKad, or an image of your ID and proof of address documents for verification

Once your account is verified you can add your first balance in the currency of your choice

Select the card tab and follow the prompts to order your Wise card

How to use cards internationally

Generally, using your credit, debit or prepaid card overseas is just as easy as doing so at home in Malaysia. However, some banks may require you to inform them of your travel plans - to avoid your payments flagging as suspicious on their system - and you’ll also need to take a few other simple steps to make sure you can spend easily, and without any extra fees.

Here are a few things to consider:

If you’re making a withdrawal or spending abroad, check that the ATM is compatible with your international card - look for the Amex, Visa or MasterCard logo

Double check the fees charged by your bank for spending and making withdrawals overseas, so there are no surprises

Always pay in the local currency wherever you are to avoid dynamic currency conversion (more on that next)

Update your contact details with your bank, in case they need to get in touch while you’re abroad

Pay your bills on time, so you don’t run into late payment fees from your card issuer

What is dynamic currency conversion?

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) is where you’re asked, by a merchant or when making an ATM withdrawal, if you’d rather pay in ringgit  instead of the local currency where you are. It’s promoted as a time saver - as you’ll instantly see how much your payment is costing in ringgit , with no need to do the maths. However, in reality it usually means you pay more overall, as the merchant or ATM operator can set the rate used to convert your payment to ringgit , and add in fees too. This pushes up the price, and is worth avoiding.

The card operators and specialist providers we’ve touched on in this guide all handle currency conversion in different ways - but they’ll usually offer a much fairer deal than relying on DCC. Here’s how a few convert your money when you spend:

Wise : Currency conversion uses the mid-market rate with low fees from 0.41%, no foreign transaction fee

BigPay: Currency conversion uses the network rate to your plan limit with 1% foreign transaction fee

RHB: No foreign transaction fee to spend currencies you hold, 1% if you need to convert to an unsupported currency

Conclusion: Best card for overseas spending in 2024

If you spend in foreign currencies often - either when you travel or when you shop online, getting a low or no foreign transaction fee card can make sense. You’ll cut down the overall costs of transacting in foreign currencies, and depending on the card type and account you prefer, you may also get extras like reward points or multi-currency holding facilities.

We’ve looked at several different no-foreign-transaction-fee card types, including credit cards which have an annual fee but also offer great reward earning opportunities; and some specialist cards from providers like Wise and BigPay .

Wise has a flexible multi-currency account which can hold and exchange 40+ currencies, so you can spend with no foreign transaction fees and currency conversion at the mid-market rate. BigPay also has handy perks like budgeting and expense tracking options, so you can do more with your money at home or abroad.

Use this guide to compare the features of each card and choose the one that best fits your personal needs and spending habits.

Best card with no or low overseas transaction fees Malaysian  FAQs

To cut the costs of spending overseas it makes sense to try to find a card which avoids foreign transaction fees. Take a look at low cost debit card options from services like Wise, and multi-currency holding accounts from large banks like RHB.

Few major Malaysian banks have cards with no foreign transaction fee. You could look at the RHB multi-currency account, or OCBC’s Premier services if you’re looking to deposit a high lump sum for investment. As an alternative, you might consider a debit card with no foreign transaction fee from a non-bank provider like Wise.

It’s always best to pay in the local currency wherever you are, to avoid the extra fees that come with dynamic currency conversion.

Often spending on your no foreign transaction fee card is pretty economical - and usually cheaper than using an airport or hotel currency exchange. Another smart choice is to open a multi-currency account with a provider like Wise or RHB so you can exchange and hold all the currencies you need in one account, ready to spend or withdraw when you travel.

Carrying a lot of cash comes with risks, so making ATM withdrawals when you arrive in your destination is often the better idea. Make sure you have a card with low or no ATM fees and no foreign transaction fee, and avoid credit cards if you can, as these usually mean high cash advance costs. Wise as an example, has low cost account options which have some fee free ATM withdrawals internationally, every month.

It’s not usually possible to avoid exchange fees entirely, but you can certainly look for a bank or provider which has transparent and low charges, to cut costs overall. Compare your own bank against a specialist service like Wise or BigPay, to see which works out cheaper for the type of transactions you make often.

Malaysia Entry Requirements Revised: Overview Of The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card

The Immigration Department of Malaysia has strengthened the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) for foreign visitors, effective December 1, 2023. According to an announcement on the department’s official Facebook account, this updated entry requirement applies to all travellers visiting Malaysia, with exceptions for three categories: Malaysia’s permanent residents, Malaysia Automated Clearance System Pass Holders, and individuals transiting or transferring via  Singapore without seeking immigration clearance.

More about Malaysia’s revised entry requirements and autogate services

In the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) form, foreign travellers are required to provide details such as their name, passport information, nationality, date of arrival, date of departure, mode of transport (air, land, or sea), and the last port of embarkation.

Under the new regulations for entry into Malaysia, travellers must present both their passport and the completed MDAC forms to the Immigration Officer on duty upon arrival. Travellers can conveniently register for the MDAC and submit the completed forms on the Immigration Department’s official website .

Additionally, based on an infographic released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia, travellers from 10 countries, including Germany, Japan , South Korea, Australia, Brunei, Singapore, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, are eligible to use the autogates (security features that control access to secured areas) for both arrival and departure at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

It’s important to note that to utilise the autogates for immigration clearance at KLIA, foreign visitors must possess passports with a validity period of at least six months.

First-time visitors, however, are not eligible for the autogate provision. They are required to submit the MDAC three days before their arrival, followed by enrolling and verifying their passports manually at the airport’s immigration counters. Subsequent visits allow visitors to take advantage of the autogates after successfully submitting the MDAC before each visit to Malaysia.

How we chose these accounts

Using prepaid travel cards.

These cards have some advantages for travellers, but make sure you dig a little deeper into the travel card fees section in order to find the travel money card that will cost you less to use overseas.

  • Multiple currencies. The main selling point for travel cards is the ability to load them with the currency of the country you’re visiting so you can spend without incurring currency conversion fees.
  • Budget control. You must keep topping up a travel card with pounds once you spend all your money. This gives you control over how much you’re able to spend and how much thieves could possibly spend if your card falls into the wrong hands.
  • Time delay. Reloading your card can take up to 3 days (or even longer if its a bank holiday in the UK), so you need to ensure you don’t let your card run too low before reloading it.
  • Backup card. Travel cards usually come with two cards. You can use the backup in the event the primary card is lost, damaged or stolen. A call to the card provider is all it takes to block the first card and activate the second card, although you might want to activate both before you leave.
  • ATM withdrawals. Travel cards allow you to withdraw cash from ATMs as well as make over-the-counter payments. Most travel cards charge a flat fee for ATM withdrawals. Some don’t, but these cards often charge for currency conversion or make up the transaction fee in other places such as initial load, reload or card inactivity fees.
  • Exchange rate. Most travel cards on the market use a different exchange rate to what’s applied to Visa and Mastercard credit cards and debit cards. A margin is applied by the travel card provider when funds are exchanged from British pounds to a foreign currency making the rates less favourable. However, you can pre-load your cash at a time when exchange rates look likely to be more favourable than the live times which debit and credit cards rely on

Using credit cards

Credit cards are widely accepted in Malaysia. You won’t have a problem using your card at shopping centres, large restaurants and hotels. Using a British credit card overseas comes at a cost though. Here are some fees you’ll want to keep an eye out for.

  • Exchange rate. Credit card transactions are subject to the Visa, Mastercard and American Express exchange rates. These rates are mostly in line with market rates and offer a better deal than travel money card rates.
  • Currency conversion fees. Unless you have a no currency conversion credit card, you can expect to be charged these fees when you use your British card to make purchases overseas. The average currency conversion fee is 3% per transaction.
  • Cash advance fees. You’ll be charged a cash advance fee when you use your card for ATM withdrawals. These fees are generally high and can sit around the 20% mark. Interest-free days don’t apply when you use your card for a cash advance.
  • ATM fees. As well as cash advance fees, you may be charged a local ATM fee when you use your card to withdraw cash.
  • Annual fee. Many credit cards charge an annual fee, so make sure the value you get from the card outweighs this cost.
  • Interest-free days. Some credit cards offer interest-free days on purchases when you repay your balance in full by the end of the statement period. The number of interest-free days will vary, but you can usually expect up to 55 interest-free days. If you’re using your card for purchases on your holiday, taking advantage of the interest-free days could help keep your interest costs to a minimum.
  • Complimentary insurance. Some credit cards offer complimentary international travel insurance and purchase protection. You’ll need to meet the eligibility requirements and pay for some of your travel costs with the card, but the insurance usually covers you plus your spouse or children who are travelling with you.
  • Rewards. Some credit cards (and travel cards) reward you with points when you make eligible card purchases. Some rewards credit cards are linked to a frequent flyer program and other cards reward you with points in a provider’s own loyalty program. Some cards offer a higher earn rate when you make purchases in a foreign currency, but these products often charge higher fees. Make sure to compare the value of the points against the extra cost to use the card overseas to determine whether it’s of value to you.

Using debit cards

Debit cards and current accounts are usually free to open. Compare your current debit card against a debit card with travel credentials to see if you can save on purchase and withdrawal fees in Malaysia. You won’t have a problem finding an ATM or point-of-sale terminal in Malaysia that accepts Visa or Mastercard debit cards.

  • Exchange rate. Visa and Mastercard debit cards use the Visa and Mastercard consumer exchange rate. This rate is likely to be close to the interbank rate, and the exchange rate spread applied by Visa and Mastercard is only marginal.
  • Your savings. Unless you’re using a current account as a dedicated travel account, this account is likely to be your main everyday bank account. Unlike travel cards, which only hold the funds you’ve transferred over, current accounts are likely to hold a larger sum of money. This might be a problem if you have trouble controlling your spending or if your card is stolen.
  • International ATM fees. This fee is charged by the card provider when you use an overseas ATM. If your card provider belongs to an ATM alliance, you might be able to avoid these fees.
  • ATM operator fees. Local ATM fees are charged by the ATM operator. You can avoid this fee in some countries by using an ATM within your institution’s overseas ATM network.
  • Currency conversion fees. This fee applies when you use your debit card outside of the UK. If you want to keep your costs low, look for a card that doesn’t charge this fee.

Using traveller’s cheques

Money safety can be a concern in Malaysia, but traveller’s cheques may not be the answer to your money security woes. You need identification to cash your traveller’s cheques, as they can only be used by you. However, fewer and fewer places are cashing traveller’s cheques in Malaysia as the digital economy grows.

  • Fees. You’ll pay a commission to cash your traveller’s cheques when you arrive in Malaysia. This is usually charged on a per cheque basis. You may also pay a handling fee to purchase the cheques.
  • Exchange rates. Don’t get traveller’s cheques exchanged more than once. Buy cheques in British pounds and cash Ringgit when you arrive. This will save you getting your money changed twice and losing out on international exchange. Avoid getting your traveller’s cheques cashed at a hotel. Do it at a bank or foreign exchange office. Hotels are likely to offer a far less competitive rate.

The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) is Malaysia’s local currency. 100 sen makes up 1 Ringgit and you’ll need to access this currency if you want to pay in cash on your holiday. You can easily get your British pounds exchanged for the local currency at Malaysian money changers, which are located at numerous places throughout the country.

How much Ringgit should you bring on your trip?

Prices are approximate and are subject to change.

If you’re wondering which travel money option is best to take to Malaysia, the answer is a combination.

It’s important to know how you plan on spending and where you plan on visiting to find the right travel money solution. Cards are widely accepted, but the majority of your spending it likely to be in cash, depending on what you’re planning to do.

Although there’s no limit to the amount of foreign currency you can take into the country and it isn’t hard to exchange your British pounds, ATM withdrawal fees and currency conversion fees should be factored into your comparison. Read on for an overview of the pros and cons of the different types of travel money you can use in Malaysia. You won’t have to worry about withdrawal fees if you opt for a banking app such as Revolut or Starling, though. These work in much the same way as conventional bank accounts do, coming with a debit card authorised by Visa or Mastercard which can be “topped up” from your mobile phone, but the key advantage is that they don’t charge withdrawal of transaction fees.

A quick summary of travel money options for Malaysia

Malaysians sometimes refer to Malaysian Ringgits as dollars, and some prices use the prefix dollar sign. All prices are in Ringgits even if you hear the vendor saying dollars. Banknotes are divided into the following denominations: 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100. Familiarise yourself with these to ensue you don’t accidentally overpay.

malaysia-currency-ringgit-1

It’s easy to exchange your money to Malaysian ringgit when you arrive in Malaysia. Banks and foreign exchange offices can be found in major tourist centres. There is no fee to exchange cash – just different rates between exchange offices. Shop around to find the best rate, but the difference between exchange offices is usually marginal.

Hotels can exchange cash as well as cash traveller’s cheques, but the rates they offer are less competitive than what you can get at banks and other authorised money changers. To find the best rate, avoid getting your cash changed around Kuala Lumpur Sentral, the airport or at a hotel.

Make sure you check you’ve been given the right amount of cash before you walk away from the teller, and resist the urge to get your money changed on the street or at shops. Street vendors and merchants may be able to offer you a better rate than what you can get at banks and Bureaux De Change offices. However, these vendors are more likely to rip you off.

Malaysia is still a cash economy; you’ll need cash to experience some of the best parts of Malaysian food and culture. Most travellers visiting Malaysia opt for a combination of debit, credit and travel cards. Debit and travel cards are a good way to pay for your everyday spending, while credit cards can be used for deposits, big purchases and emergency situations. If you do plan on using your credit card in Malaysia, make sure you tell your card provider about your travel plans first so that your credit card is not blocked.

What safety tips should I know for handling money in Malaysia?

Common sense is the best approach to money safety in Malaysia. Avoid carrying excessive amounts of cash and don’t make it obvious if you are holding a lot of banknotes. Use reputable ATMs inside of banks or near banks with security and cover your hand when you’re entering your PIN. Or, if you’re using a banking app, keep a close eye on your phone.

What are the bank opening hours?

Banks in Malaysia are open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm. Banks in the Muslim states of Malaysia may have different opening hours.

Do I pay more because I’m not Malaysian?

In some places, you may pay more because you’re a tourist. This foreigner tax is not unique to Malaysia. If you feel the price is unreasonably inflated, all you can do is walk away.

How much should I tip?

Unlike countries like the United States, tipping is not expected in Malaysia. A service fee may be included in the bill at some restaurants. A tip is always appreciated though, so you can leave change for wait staff if you feel the service justifies something extra.

In the ever-evolving landscape of international travel, staying informed about entry requirements is essential. One such requirement that's set to make an impact on travelers visiting Malaysia is the MDAC: Malaysia Digital Arrival Card.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the MDAC, including who is exempt, the submission process, and what to do upon arrival.

What Is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)?

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is a new online pre-arrival form introduced as part of Malaysia's Visa Liberalization Plan.

Starting from January 1, 2024*, most foreign travelers visiting Malaysia will be required to complete the MDAC before their arrival in the country. This online form is designed to streamline the entry process and enhance the overall travel experience.

*There is a grace period in effect until 31 December 2023, permitting foreign travellers to complete the form upon arrival at Malaysia's international entry points. However, starting 1 January 2024, they must complete the form prior to arrival.

Who Is Exempted from MDAC Submission?

Not all travelers are subject to the MDAC requirement. Certain categories of travelers are exempt from filling out the MDAC. These exemptions include:

  • Singaporeans: Citizens of Singapore are not required to complete the MDAC as of 1 January 2024.
  • Malaysia Long-Term Pass Holders: Individuals holding long-term passes for Malaysia are exempt from MDAC submission.
  • Brunei Common Identification Certificate Holders: Those with Brunei common identification certificates are not required to fill out the digital arrival card.
  • Thai Border Pass Holders: Travelers holding Thai border passes are also exempt from MDAC submission.

If you fall within any of these exemption categories, you do not need to complete the MDAC. However, it's essential to ensure you meet the exemption criteria.

For arrivals at Malaysian airports, passports should be valid for at least six months, while those entering through land checkpoints need passports valid for at least three months.

Top 5 Cashback Credit Cards in Malaysia You Should Get This 2024

Michelle Chee

Michelle Chee

[_Refresh_]_Top_5_Best_Cashback_Cards_2024-FI

When they were first offered, credit cards were basically cards that allowed you to swipe for a transaction that you had to pay later. However, credit card providers have been steadily adding various features to credit cards to make them more attractive to the masses, and one of these is the concept of a cashback.

Credit cards with cashback can help reduce your daily expenses—as they give you rebates at supermarkets, department stores, petrol stations, convenience stores, and others places where you shop for daily necessities . Some credit cards also offer rebates for dining and entertainment.

However, how do you decide on which cashback credit card to get? Here, we have compiled a list of the best cashback credit cards in Malaysia. Check out their cashback rates and other rewards here.

🎓UOB One Card: Best for Beginners

UOB One Card MY banner

Choosing the right credit card that suits your current stage of life is important. Fresh graduates will be delighted to know that the UOB One card only requires its applicants to have a minimum monthly income of RM2,000 per month .

As someone who is entering the employment market , you most likely will need to buy your own car to commute to the office or run errands. This card can help you save money on petrol, as it offers up to 10% cashback of petrol.

Apart from petrol, the 10% cashback also covers dining, selected grocers and Grab transactions. All these will come in handy for daily savings. The 10% cashback is dependent on a minimum spend of RM500 or RM1500 a month for UOB One Classic or One Platinum respectively.

Don't fret if you don't meet this condition, as you'll still enjoy 0.2% cashback on all retail spend with no conditions tied to it.

Requirements:

  • Minimum monthly income RM2,000
  • Annual fee RM200

That works out to just RM1,000 per month if you want your annual fees waived indefinitely.

Standard Chartered card holders can also Live the Good Life™ with promotions, discounts and deals with more than 130 vendors all year long. These includes deals as low as RM 1 at ZUS Coffee and Inside Scoop, as well as hotel stay offers.

  • Minimum monthly income RM3,000

The Maybank 2 Gold is a very unique card that allows you to reap benefits from 2 credit cards with just one account. The aforementioned cards are the Maybank 2 American Express Gold and Maybank 2 Mastercard & Visa.

The cashback offered here happens when you swipe the Maybank 2 American Express on weekends. This gives you 5% cashback on any transaction or purchase except government bodies and utilities spend.

On the other hand, this credit card account is also great for collecting TreatsPoints on both cards which can then be used to redeem rewards from Maybank.

In addition to great cashback, there's the RHB CashXcess that allows you to convert up to 80% of your credit limit to a loan. You can even determine the repayment tenure to suit your affordability.

  • Minimum monthly salary, RM2,000
