The best bus tours in London with kids

I never tire of walking London’s streets, discovering some of the city’s secrets, but there’s no question that one of the best ways for families to explore is by boarding one of the string of bus tours in London with kids.

Model red doubledecker bus -my pick of the best bus tours in London with kids plus transport routes to create your own

The hop-off hop-off bus routes in London are a great way to get around – the open-top bus is always a hit with my daughter, and it’s handy for getting to A to B while you sightsee, if you fancy a break from the tube .

But you’ll also find themed tours, including fun options for teens and toddlers, and can even combine a trip with afternoon tea. If you’re not sure where to start, I’ve picked out the best London bus tours with kids, plus some of the best ways to find a discount.

TOOTBus London Hop On Hop Off Tour

With more freedom and flexibility than non-stop bus tours (ideal with kids), there are two main options if you want a hop-on hop-off tour of London.

TOOTBus is one of the best bus tours in London with kids, with a fleet of open top buses making 35 stops across two jam-packed routes, plus an app for real-time bus information and details of nearby stops – scroll down for details of their other family-friendly tours too.

The Yellow Route takes you around the West End and along the River Thames to the City of London and Tower Bridge. The Blue Route also covers the landmarks of the West End in central London before travelling further west to South Kensington, Hyde Park, Notting Hill and Paddington.

There’s currently 15% off Tootbus London Discovery Tours and Must See London – valid to March 31, 2024 (excluding family tickets) Click here to book

Audio guide commentary is available onboard, plus there’s a channel just for children which is specially designed to capture their attention throughout the journey.

You can also exchange your Tesco Clubcard points for TOOTBus vouchers to book your London tour with kids.

London bus tour + Thames river cruise

You can choose either a one, two or three-day option for the Must-See London tour ticket, which also includes a Thames river cruise. A 24-hour ticket costs £42 for adults and £24 for children (5-15) if you buy online in advance. Tickets are valid for 12 months.

Under 5’s travel for free and are recommended to sit on an adult’s lap. You can bring buggies on board but are asked to keep them with you – if the bus isn’t busy, you should be able to store them downstairs, but may need to be able to fold them.

London Discovery hop on hop off tour

Or the London Discovery ticket is cheaper at £35/£20 but the River Thames sightseeing cruise is not included – if you’re looking purely for the hop-on hop-off bus tour of London with kids, go for this one.

There’s also a great 60-minute Christmas lights tour during November and December (and the first few days of January) as well as a 90-minute London by Night tour which departs at 7pm, if you fancy seeing the city all lit up on an evening tour.

Open-topped boat sailing towards Westminster bridge with the Houses of Parliament and the tower containing Big Ben in the background - a boat tour is included with some of the best bus tours of London with kids

Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off Tour

The other main option for hop-on hop-off bus tours of London, Big Bus’s Hop-On Hop-Off Tour has open-top sightseeing buses that run regularly throughout the day and let you jump on and off at any of their 37 stops around the capital, and include a river cruise along the Thames.

The tours also feature pre-recorded commentary so you can learn more about the sites you see along the way, with tickets allowing you to try both of the company’s three London sightseeing routes .

The Red Route takes you around London’s most iconic landmarks, from Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament in the west to St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London in the east.

Buses run around every 20 minutes – download the app to get live bus times – and allow around two and a half hours for the full route (depending on traffic).

The Blue Route takes you to explore London’s West End, with stops including Marble Arch, Harrods, Kensington Palace and Notting Hill, and takes around 90 minutes, while the Green Link route runs between Waterloo and Kings Cross.

Book tickets with free cancellation , find special offers on Big Bus Tours if you book in advance, or keep an eye out for deals on sites such as Wowcher for some huge Big Bus discounts , which can make them a lot cheaper than the competition.

Their classic 24-hour ticket including a river cruise costs £31.50 for adults and £22.50 for children between 5-15. Under 5’s travel for free. Family tickets are also available (2 adults & 2 children), along with tickets including extra perks such as a night tour.

London bus tour + attraction entry

Or check out the Big City Saver ticket if you’re planning to visit London’s Merlin attactions, with options including the Big Bus Tour and London Eye entry (for standard entry, if you want London Eye fast track entry, you’ll need to book that separately).

TOOTBus Kids Tour

Tootbus is also one of the few tour companies in the capital that runs a dedicated London kids bus tour, aimed specifically at younger children.

The Tootbus Kids Tour is a short 45-minute tour that takes you around the sites of London’s West End.

From the top of the double decker bus, you get amazing views of famous attractions such as Big Ben, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus and more. An enthusiastic guide provides live guided commentary for children, packed with interesting facts and fun stories.

Kids tours run at 2pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the year and daily during school holidays, plus there are sometimes special Christmas kids tours in December, for a fun festive family day out in London.

Tickets cost £20 for adults and children, and kids under 4 go free.

Stand of cakes and scones from a traditional afternoon tea - you can even have afternoon tea, including a Peppa Pig version, on board some of the best bus tours in London with kids

Peppa Pig Afternoon Tea Bus Tour

Brigit’s Bakery is well-known in London for its themed afternoon tea bus tours , which include seasonal menus including spooky Halloween teas and festive Christmas teas.

But for younger kids, the big hit is the Peppa Pig themed afternoon tea bus tour for kids, aimed at children aged two and up.

Along with the colourful interiors, you’ll find special tablets on each table that provide a Peppa Pig guided animation of the London tour, plus themed sweet and savoury treats, and an activity book for little ones to take home with them.

The bus also has a children’s toilet (not available on their other tours) in case of any emergencies. For slightly older kids, there’s also a Paddington Afternoon tea bus tour , aimed at age 5+.

Check out this mini-guide to Paddington’s London for more places to find the much-loved bear from Darkest Peru

While you enjoy your afternoon tea, Brigit’s Bakery vintage Routemaster bus takes you on a 90-minute journey around the capital’s most famous landmarks. Tours run from Thursday to Sunday each week.

Harry Potter Bus Tour

Harry Potter fans both old and young are sure to love the Wizards London Bus Tour . You’ll spend a little over three hours travelling around London’s top Harry Potter destinations, including filming locations from the movies and the muggle sites that inspired JK Rowling’s original books.

The Wizard Bus Tour takes you past magical locations such as the inspiration for 12 Grimmauld Place, the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and more.

There are also several photo stops, including Kings Cross Station where you can take the iconic photo pushing a trolley through the wall at Platform 9 ¾.

Tours run on Sundays throughout the year and on Wednesdays during school holidays. If you’re travelling to London by train with National Rail, you can grab 2for1 tickets for the bus tour via the Days Out Scheme .

For more Harry Potter locations in London , check out my top picks for fans to visit, including guided walking tours

Ghost Bus Tour

Older children and teens can enjoy hearing dark tales from London’s past on this Ghost Bus Tour , the UK’s only comedy-horror theatre sightseeing experience on wheels.

On the 75-minute London bus tour, you’ll visit the city’s most famous attractions and hear stories of murders and hauntings that most other tours miss out on. So whether you’re a local or just visiting the capital, you’re guaranteed to learn something new.

You’ll be guided by a live ‘conductor’, and a few mystery guests along the way, who are there to make sure the interactive tour is a fun, spooky, and memorable experience for all the family.

The tour departs from a bus stop on Northumberland Avenue at 19:30 and 21:00 each evening – suitable for children 5+, although realistically this one’s better with older kids.

Check out my review of the Ghost Bus Tour of London – with kids, or without

Vintage London Bus tour

If you’ve got your heart set on travelling on one of the classic London Routemaster buses – the traditional red double-decker buses which are so iconic – you’ll need to book a special Vintage London Bus tour .

The route is designed to start in central London, boarding at Victoria and passing some of the city’s iconic attractions including Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London, before letting you join a sightseeing cruise on the River Thames.

After eyeing up more of the city’s sights from the water, you board the bus once more and drive towards Buckingham Palace (although buses can’t go close to the monarch’s residence, you can hop off to take photos). The tour has five stops and you can get on and off at any of these.

You can also upgrade your ticket to get entry to the London Eye and even to add a tour to Stonehenge on to a morning tour. Tickets cost from £52 for adults.

Create your own London bus tour with kids

If you’re looking to save money on a family holiday in London, the cheapest bus tour in London with kids is a DIY option.

Taking a ride on a iconic red double-decker bus is always a favourite with kids, but you can use the regular Transport for London routes to see the sights as well if you choose your route carefully.

Bus travel is free for kids under 11 (age 11-15 need a Zip Oyster card to get the free rides, otherwise there’s 50% off if you add the Young Visitor Discount to a standard Oyster card), and single Hopper fares for parents are £1.75 with unlimited journeys within one hour of touching in with your Oyster pass or contactless card – you can’t buy a bus ticket when you board.

Advert showing an image of a printable scavenger hunt for London's iconic sights and the words 'click here to buy your scavenger hunt for finding some of the iconic sights of London with kids, only 99p'

Head up to the top deck of Route 15 and you’ll pass the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral and Trafalgar Square. On bank holidays and at weekends from late March to the end of September, you might even find the classic Routemaster buses running.

Route 26 is another great option, travelling from Victoria to Horseguards Parade via Westminster Abbey, then on to Trafalgar Square and St Paul’s (the old Route 11 has changed so no longer stops here).

If you’re travelling to the South Kensington museums, route 9 goes from Trafalgar Square past Picadilly Circus, Hyde Park, Knightsbridge and  Kensington Palace .

What better way to bring out your kid’s sweet side than to board a bus in the afternoon and feed them a spread of sandwiches and treats from a  leading London bakery ? Your family will enjoy traditional tea time while exploring the city and resting up for the rest of an exciting day in London.

Selecting the Best London Bus Tours for Kids of All Ages

The best bus tour is the one that meets the needs of your family and the interest of your children. As you explore your options, keep the following factors in mind:

  • Space  – Some tours limit the number of people allowed to attend at once. If you have a large family or are traveling with extended family, that may mean booking multiple tours and splitting into groups.
  • Availability  – Some London bus tours are only available on set days of the week. They will all have set times for departure. Those days and times may not align well with your itinerary.
  • Theme  – Some themes are suitable for the entire family while others are best left for older children and teenagers. Some are historic while others are focused on specific themes. The theme will dictate where the tour goes and the sites you see, so choose wisely.
  • Length  – How long can each member of your family sit still on a bus? The guide will help keep their attention, but small children may still struggle to sit still and pay attention for longer than an hour.
  • Refreshments  – Some bus tours will include snacks and/or drinks while others trust you to take care of those arrangements for your own family. Some may not allow drinks or food on the bus at all, so make sure to ask if your little ones need refreshed.
  • Time  – The time of day can make a difference in how alert and happy young children are and how well you can see the city outside the window. Scary London tours are best after dark, so remember that London doesn’t get dark until 9 p.m. in some seasons.

Weighing all those factors, select the London bus tours that will suit your family well. If you see multiple tours that your family will enjoy, consider using them as rest periods between attractions that require more energy.

What is it?

It’s a touristy open-top bus ride through the infamous sites of Central London. Find stops all over Central London, but one of the main stops is in Piccadilly Circus just a minute away from Ripley’s! Believe It or Not .

9 - 12 / 12+

£££. It is very expensive, but there are ways to make the most out of your ticket and buying online in advance can save you a little bit of money.

What’s on offer

There are two types of tour to choose from: the red tour (which features a live guide) or the blue tour (which features the earphone commentary).

Both bus tours take you on an extensive sightseeing adventure through Central London including Buckingham Palace , St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, Tower of London , Tower Bridge, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, London Eye and the South Bank .

You have the option of a 24 or 48-hour ticket and the ability to get off and back on the bus wherever and whenever you want within that time frame. If you’re not one for public transport or have little ones who don’t enjoy riding on the tube, this might be a nice alternative for local families on a day out or visiting families to ensure they see all the sights.

The hop on hop off factor also handy if you want to plan a route through London or visit certain attractions in a particular order.

There are two types of guides on each bus – a live guide or a language commentary via headphones. There are eight languages to choose from for the commentary, but live guides speak in English. You’re allowed to get off the bus and interchange between the two.

You can buy tickets or exchange a voucher on board for the Thames RiverCruise.

If you’re into the chatty, energetic tour guide who likes to personalise his banter to the guests he’s presenting to, then the red tour is definitely for you. They’re good with kids, though children won’t always get the jokes.

Locals will absolutely love seeing the sights they’re so used to from a height. It’s surprisingly refreshing and will make you feel like you’re new to the capital once more. Tourists, whether UK natives or foreigners, are the ideal audience for this tour and the comprehensive tour really allows you to see all the big, famous sights. London's a big city, so if you've only got a few days but want an impressive photo album to take home, this tour is the one for you.

What to watch out for

  • Young children will probably, unfortunately, get bored on this tour bus. That’s not because the bus is an unpleasant experience, but because until they are old enough to appreciate the history and interest behind the sights– there’s not really anything for them to do. Several mums have commented that they would not take a child under 9 on this bus for the full tour.
  • Buses should be expected at stops at 10 – 20 minute intervals.
  • The seats on the bus are big enough, but are still quite small. Don’t bring lots of luggage or a buggy on board to save room.
  • There are NO toilets on the bus.
  • The whole red bus ride, without stopping, lasts 2 hours 15 minutes. The blue bus lasts 3 hours 15 minutes. That’s a long time without a bathroom break for a youngster.
  • If you want to do the whole tour without stopping, make sure your child doesn’t drink too much liquid. You’ll probably have to stop. Just accept it and plan what you can do on your bathroom break.
  • If it’s raining, umbrellas will be no good. Either sit on the top deck under the cover or the slightly less favourable bottom deck. If you and the kids want to brave it on the top deck sans cover, wear a raincoat. It’s always wise to carry a fold-up pac-a-mac or rain poncho.
  • If it’s not scorching hot outside and you want to sit outside on the top deck, it will be windy! You will suddenly get cold! Wear a coat or jumper.
  • This tour is best enjoyed on a mild, warm, sunny day without any wind or rain, a lunchtime picnic at one of the Royal Parks and a visit to a nearby attraction.
  • If mums and families want to take the tour with young children, it’s best to bring something to entertain them with. Video games, colouring books, toys are good options and easy to carry on board. Or you can take the earphone commentary tour and invent a game to play with them on the journey.

children's open top bus tour london

  • See London aboard a vintage, hop-on hop-off London bus
  • Thames River cruise ticket included
  • Optional London Eye ticket add-on
  • Optional Stonehenge trip add-on

Another marvelous choice for anyone hoping to take an open top bus tour.

This one comes with a twist – you get to see the city aboard a classic bus from the 1960s!

Tour London in style, passing top attractions: St Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace (hopefully you can stop to see the Changing of the Guard!), Cleopatra’s Needle, and many more.

Midway through you’ll indulge in a Thames River cruise, climbing back aboard for the final leg of the journey which will take you to the London Eye.

If you selected the optional upgrade you can skip the queues and soar above London and see the city’s skyline while encased in a glass pod.

After this, head back to the bus station to board another bus for an afternoon excursion to Stonehenge – if you’re up for it.

This tour is worth it if you want an open top bus tour with a vintage flair and hope to combine it with a ride on the London Eye.

  • Free WiFi available on board
  • 3 different routes are available

For those of you looking for flexibility on your open top bus tour, I would recommend this tour with 3 separate routes to choose from.

The route variety allows you to see as many of London’s top sights as you can handle while enjoying the onboard commentary.

Choose between tickets that last for one, two or three days, allowing you to space out the experience, ensuring you don’t suffer from sightseeing fatigue.

Make use of the included Thames River cruise.

You may as well purchase the London Eye ticket add-on while you’re at it, ticking off another one of London’s finest activities.

The WiFi on board is a nice touch.

Even if you’ve not picked up a UK sim card yet you can still stay connected while out and about on this tour.

The route variety and multi-day ticket options makes this a brilliant choice for those looking to cover as much ground as possible from the vantage point of an open top bus.

Pass by the imposing St Paul’s Cathedral, lit up so you’re still able to take in its beauty, gaze at the illuminated Houses of Parliament, and marvel at the glowing London Eye.

These are just a few London landmarks that you’ll pass by and gain a newfound appreciation of.

Accompanying you on your tour will be a guide who will provide a live commentary, filling you in on all kinds of facts and educational tidbits.

Consider this tour if you have no time for an open bus tour in the day, or if you’re looking to see London illuminated.

5. Golden Tours London Hop-On Hop-Off Open Top Sightseeing Bus Tour

  • Audio guide included
  • Ticket includes a free walking tour and optional ticket to KidZania

Our final open top bus tour also includes a number of added extras that makes this tour just as worthwhile as the others on the list.

Once you’ve picked which of the two routes you’d like to take, plug in your audio guide and take in London’s sights and landmarks.

Regardless of your chosen route, you’ll be taken through some of London’s most picturesque areas.

Even if you’ve picked the excellent value ticket option that’s valid for 24 hours you might feel the need for a break at various points and that’s a-okay.

Included in the ticket are a Thames River cruise, two walking tours to choose between (Beatles or Royals), and an optional entry into KidZania which could be the perfect way to spend an afternoon if you have kids.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .
