Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Golden West Adventure Tour

Golden West Adventure

I picked the Golden West Adventure tour and it was simply amazing. We stayed in great hotels and hostels, the other people on board (over 40 people!) were all fun to cope with. Besides the price of the tour, you have to be prepared to spend additional ~$600 for other stuff, like visiting Alcatraz prison in San Francisco or a $250 flight in a helicopter above the Grand Canyon. Did I mention wonderful shows in Las Vegas? Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Hell yeah! If I were to decide on the best trip I ever had, it would be this one. But don't get me wrong, major factors were the people aboard the bus in which you traveled and I'm not talking now about the other travelers. I'm talking about our driver and our fabulous, amazing, lovely, charming and most important funny! - Tour Director Linda. Without her, I would drop the star count to 4, but she's a start herself, so a full 5/5 for Cosmos for having me experience a great time with them. Definitely recommend! Adam S.

Why San Diego Is the Perfect Vacation Destination for Retirees (Video)

san diego tours for seniors

One of the greatest perks of being retired is the flexibility of your time. Retirees quickly become aware of that benefit when they enjoy empty movie theaters on weekday afternoons, airfare savings on off-peak travel days, and vacations that don’t have to be taken in week-long increments.

For retirees seeking the ideal place to take advantage of their flexible schedule, San Diego offers the option to be active, relaxed, entertained, educated, and more. San Diego’s climate just about guarantees year-round splendid weather for being outdoors. There’s a vibrant downtown, excellent dining, ocean waves, calm bays, as well as cultural and entertainment opportunities. With a range of neighborhoods, lodging (from the best hotels in the city to neighborhood hidden gems), prices, and plenty of free activities, San Diego has it all, and with time to enjoy it at their own pace, retirees can create their perfect vacation.

Nearly everyone who travels to San Diego visits Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, Mission Beach, downtown, and the many other popular tourist destinations. Their time is usually limited, and although enjoyable, it’s only an introduction to the city and its surroundings. With more flexibility and time, retirees can truly take advantage of all that San Diego has to offer. Here are just a few examples of how a visit to San Diego can fill weeks of adventure and pleasure.

Balboa Park

Chelsea Loren/Travel + Leisure

The Spreckels Organ Pavilion , one of the world’s largest outdoor pipe organs, is wonderful to see, but those who can be there on a Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. will be able to hear its glorious sound for an hour with the weekly free concert. During summer, organ concerts are also held on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30, and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Twilight in the Park Summer Concerts at 6:30 p.m. include music from military bands to Dixieland Jazz and salsa.

Performing arts venues in Balboa Park include the Old Globe Theater, Casa del Prado Theater, WorldBeat Center, and Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater. Visitors can check the calendar and plan to see the events of their choice — if their travel schedule is flexible.

At the Spanish Village Art Center , visitors can watch artists at work, seeing demonstrations from the more than 200 painters, metalsmiths, sculptors, jewelry designers, photographers, printmakers, and more. With time to explore, guests can enjoy the art and even take a class in watercolor, ceramics, glass art, or pottery. For fun or perhaps a new hobby, the Art Center is perfect for a day of browsing and learning.

Speaking of hobbies, gardening is a favorite of many retirees, and Balboa Park’s gardens will inspire, educate, and provide pleasure to anyone with or without a green thumb. Nearly twenty different gardens include the Botanical Building , Desert Garden , and California Native Plants .

Balboa Park’s 17 museums cover anthropology, art, aviation, science, technology, history and more, and with time to delve into your interests or to see them all, you’ll have a most rewarding experience. Perfect for retirees with a flexible schedule, the Balboa Park Explorer Pass provides savings—for example, the Multi-Day pass offers admission to 16 participating museums over seven consecutive days for only $57, a saving of around $100.

More than 70 miles of coastline guarantees visitors their perfect experience whether it includes swimming, surfing, bike riding, tide pooling, or just relaxing under an umbrella or building a sand castle. Visitors with enough time can rent a bike and wind along Mission Bay’s 27-mile-long paved path at their own pace or ride along San Diego Bay on the Bayshore Bikeway. Whether it’s for a bracing workout or a casual ride, exploring on two wheels is a great way to see San Diego.

The U.S.S. Midway is a must-see attraction in downtown San Diego. The aircraft carrier is now an interactive museum with flight deck, restored aircraft, flight simulators, and theater. There’s a self-guided tour, but conversations with docents who tell stories and answer questions really bring the visit to life and remind visitors of San Diego’s role as a Navy town.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego displays a collection of historic ships, including the Star of India, the world’s oldest active ship. Book a cruise on one or all of the replicas that include the Californian , the official tall ship of the State of California, and a high speed Swift Boat .

The Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma commemorates the exploration of San Diego Bay by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who arrived in 1542 in his flagship, the San Salvador. Take time for a ranger-led or self-guided tour to learn about the area’s history and roles in both World Wars. Enjoy the spectacular views and in winter, perhaps a whale or two will swim by on their annual migration to Baja California.

Beyond the great weather, which makes it easy to enjoy outdoor attractions, another plus in San Diego is that the city offers a wide variety of activities — meaning that you can be as active or sedentary as you like.

You’ll definitely want to spend a significant amount of time in Balboa Park. On its own merits it’s one of America’s most spectacular city parks, but there’s so much more here. Created in 1916 for the Panama-California Expedition, the 1,200-acre park, with its Spanish Colonial Revival-style buildings, is home to numerous art galleries and museums, including the Natural History Museum, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, the Spanish Village Art Center, the Timken Museum of Art, the Veterans Museum and the Japanese Friendship Garden, to name just some. Phew!

San Diego is also easily accessible by airplane, train, bus or car. Once in the city, you’ll find the public transportation system clear-cut and easy to use. Seniors will enjoy discounts not only on transportation but at nearly every major attraction in the city.

Tip: Consider buying a pass for the Old Town Trolley Tour of San Diego. The trolley stops at most of the city’s major tourist attractions and runs all day, offering on-and-off touring and historical narration along the way.

Home Away From Home The best thing about the Manchester Grand Hyatt is that it’s close to the cruise terminal (in fact, if you wake up early you may be able to spot ships sailing into the harbor), adjacent to the touristy but cute Seaport Village, and within a pleasant stroll’s distance of the Gaslamp District. As well, for those folks who just want to experience in-hotel R & R, the place is huge, offering a variety of options for dining, activity and recreation.

The Days Inn SeaWorld/Airport offers basic accommodations at very reasonable prices. It’s a good option for travelers arriving by car because of its large parking lot (something many downtown hotels lack). It offers a free continental breakfast daily and free shuttle service to the airport, Amtrak station and SeaWorld.

Day One The first thing you’ll do when you arrive in San Diego is head out of town. Some of the most interesting attractions in the city are actually located outside the city center — for example, the string of missions that dot the California coast, beginning in San Diego County. Just a few miles north of downtown, you’ll see the first of the 21 missions that continue to operate and preserve the city’s Spanish past: Mission San Diego de Alcala. Today it operates as a Catholic parish, and has a small museum and gift shop.

The next two missions are Mission San Luis Rey de Francia and Mission San Juan Capistrano, located further north in Oceanside and San Juan Capistrano, respectively.

Depending on how many missions you decided to visit, you may be ready to head back to your hotel for a rest. But if not, head to Old Town to experience more of San Diego’s history. Stop at the Old Town Mexican Cafe for excellent Mexican food and to watch tortillas being made by the famous “Tortilla Ladies.” Be sure to check out the Bazaar del Mundo for free entertainment and to shop for Mexican folk art, ceramics and fashions.

Head to the Gaslamp Quarter for dinner. This area really comes alive after dark as the restaurants and cafes fill up with the sounds of chatter and music. There are over 200 restaurants in this small area serving every cuisine under the sun; a few standouts are Trattoria La Bocca, for reasonably priced Italian and an affordable wine list, and Rei Do Gado, a Brazilian-style all-you-can-eat steakhouse where prices are per person rather then a la carte.

Day Two The United States Navy’s presence in San Diego is hard to overstate; since World War II, the city has served as the Navy’s Pacific Command Center. Take a stroll along the waterfront path of the Embarcadero and stop in at the Maritime Museum, made up of historic ships. The most impressive is the Star of India, the world’s oldest active ship. If you’re a real enthusiast, take a half-day adventure sail aboard the Californian, a 145-foot schooner.

Dip into more a glamorous type of American history by heading across the bay to Coronado via bridge or ferry and to the Hotel del Coronado (known affectionately as “The Del”) for a sunset cocktail. The luxury resort has a long history of catering to the rich and famous and was also the place where Marilyn Monroe filmed “Some Like it Hot.” If you have time, the hotel’s upscale shops are worth a browse, or take a stroll along its beautiful, sugar-white sand beach.

End your day with dinner at one of the Hotel del Coronado’s restaurants. Fine dining is on the menu at the elegant 1500 Ocean, or enjoy a more casual experience on the terrace at Sheerwater.

Day Three Spend today exploring the beauty and culture of Balboa Park. There are over 1,000 landscaped acres and 15 of San Diego’s best museums in this cultural complex, plus art galleries, street performers and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Strolling along El Prado, you’ll come across several of the park’s museums housed in Spanish Colonial Revival-style buildings. Some of the highlights worth checking out are the San Diego Museum of Art, the Timken Museum of Art and the Museum of San Diego History. Various passes and packages are available for joint admission to selected attractions within the complex.

Rest from the morning’s cultural and historic excursions with a light lunch at the Tea Pavilion, near the garden, where you can dine (indoors or out) on sushi, Japanese noodles, rice bowls, miso soup and other treats.

If you would prefer to spend this or any other day on a more rural outing, consider a day trip to La Jolla, about 20 minutes north of the city. This picturesque town offers upscale shopping and dining ina beautiful setting. Nature enthusiasts will delight in the beaches, lagoons and trails at Torrey Pines State Park. La Jolla also offers great dining options; for views of the Pacific, head to George’s at the Cove. For a casual bite, check out Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza. For fine dining, head to the Sky Room at the La Valencia Hotel.

8 Great Activities for Seniors Visiting San Diego

9009401089?profile=original

SeaWorld San Diego

One of only three SeaWorld parks in the United States is located right here, with multiple aquariums; shows put on by the animal trainers and the wonderful marine life they train; and even a few amusement rides.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park

If you want to see more wildlife, this giant, nearly 2,000-acre zoo houses more than 3,000 animals of more than 300 species. Divided into 12 zones, you’ll find all of your favorite safari animals like elephants, zebras, giraffes, and many more.

San Diego Museums

It’s hard to choose just one of the many this city has to offer, but here are a few favorites. The USS Midway Museum is a historical naval aircraft carrier museum at the Navy Pier. The massive San Diego Museum of Art has a wide range of world art stretching back to 5000 BCE - especially strong in Old Masters of Spain - and a fine outdoor eatery. Are you a fan of spacecraft or trains? Then take your pick between the San Diego Air and Space Museum and the San Diego Model Railroad Museum; both are spectacular.

Botanical Building at Balboa Park

Besides lovely gardens and landscaping, this 1,200-acre park packs in a week’s worth of activities all by itself, including theaters and 16 cool museums. But one of my favorites is the beautiful, historic Botanical Building, buit in 1915, which houses plant environments of all kinds. You can also explore the grounds surrounding the building and check out all the elegant fountains.

Old Town San Diego

As the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement, in 1769, Old Town San Diego is filled with history. You can hike trails in the state park, travel through original adobe buildings, and enjoy authentic Mexican food. You’re sure to get your Spanish history fix after exploring Old Town.

Coronado Beach

What kind of vacation would it be if you didn’t find time to relax by the beach? Coronado Beach is one of the best beaches to do just that. In 2012 it was even named as the number one beach in the USA. Depending on the time of the year, you may even be able to see Navy SEALs training on the beach in their own private area.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

At this 2,000-acre state park located right on the coast you can hike or bike numerous trails, watch for dolphins, or even play a round of golf. There are always exciting events going on throughout the reserve as well, so there is bound to be something you’ll enjoy.

Belmont Park

Opened in 1925, Belmont Park has been a go-to spot for entertainment for locals and visitors alike. While riding amusement rides, you can look out on  the blue waters that kiss the San Diego coast. You’ll have a fun-filled evening while playing vintage games and shopping at the local gift shops.

15 Exciting San Diego Walking Tours - Recommended By A Local

O ver the past decade, San Diego has become one of the United State’s main tourist hot spots. With an array of adorable neighborhoods and great weather all year round, it’s no wonder millions visit each year.

Every corner you turn in San Diego, something exciting awaits. That’s why the city is super fun to explore on foot. But what happens when you don’t know where to go? We’ve got one solution: walking tours! Greg and I love going on walking tours when we travel but have also done a few San Diego walking tours over the years.

Walking tours are a fantastic way to get a feel for the city and discover hidden pockets you wouldn’t find alone. There are a bunch of exciting walking tours available all over San Diego with many in various neighborhoods to show you all the metropolis has to offer.

Here are our picks of the best San Diego walking tours!

San Diego Walking Tours – Gaslamp Quarter

San diego gaslamp quarter historic true crime tour.

Are you a true crime buff? Then this one-hour walking tour in San Diego is for you. Learn about the other side of the bustling Gaslamp Quarter that many have yet to hear about.

Meet your guide at Fifth Avenue and wander through an area previously referred to as Stingaree. Travel back in time to hear tales about an appalling string of crimes that happened there in the past. Along the way, you’ll even stop at a haunted hotel known for its mysterious paranormal activity. If this doesn’t give you a chill down your spine, then what will?

Greg and I had so much fun hearing about the dark and twisted history, haunted tales, and true crime stories on this tour. Highly recommend this one!!!

Downtown Gaslamp Walking Tour

Expose yourself to San Diego’s covered-up history involving brutal gangsters, ladies of the night, and frightening ghost chronicles. The stories will keep you up at night.

Join your guide at the Gaslamp Quarter Arch, where they’ll bring you to over 30 petrifying locations, each with a spooky story. Get the chance to step inside two haunted buildings, the only tour in San Diego that does so.

It’s a fascinating two-hour tour with a private guide, admission tickets, and a thrilling experience you’ll never forget.

Culinary Tour In The Gaslamp Quarter

Sample the tastiest bites on this walking food tour in San Diego with an experienced guide who has the city’s culinary scene down to a T. Bounce between restaurants and bars, testing out mouthwatering dishes and well-crafted drinks while learning about the district’s seedy past.

The eye-opening 2.5-hour tour will commence at Fifth Avenue and finish up somewhere in the historic Gaslamp Quarter. While there’s a lot of eating and drinking involved in this activity, the focus is on the area’s sleazy history and stories about how it used to be a red-light district.

All the food and drink you consume on this San Diego walking tour are included in the booking. Just how foodies like it.

Gaslamp Quarter Walking Tour

Take this 1.5 hour small group tour to grasp the origins of the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter.

Join up with your guide on Fifth Avenue and roam around the area listening to facts and stories only the locals know about. See the Yuma Building, which was raided in 1912, and dive into the world of drama outside the Balboa Theatre .

To keep things intimate and give you a chance to make new friends, only twelve people maximum can join this downtown walking tour.

Gaslamp Audioguide Tour

Nothing screams fun like an audio guide tour. Within seconds of downloading a simple mobile phone application, you’ll be on your way to running around the Gaslamp Quarter’s points of interest. A few highlights include the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum and the US Grant.

Get the app on your phone and embark on your journey around the Gaslamp Quarter. It usually lasts between 1.5 – 2 hours, but the benefit of this excursion is you can go at your own leisurely pace.

This interesting 1.5 hour guided walking tour takes you to Balboa Park’s secret highlights. These include the Sculpture Garden, Palm Canyon Trail, Casa Del Prado, and much more. There are over 25 attractions to see throughout the short excursion, so it promises to be action-packed, to say the least.

The tour kicks off at the Plaza de Panama, the park’s central point, and ends at the Botanical Building. The tour guide provides admission tickets for more than half of the sights, including the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden and Balboa Park Visitor’s Center.

You’ll have plenty of time to roam freely when the tour is over. At this time you can also purchase tickets for additional attractions.

Small Group Balboa Park Highlights Tour

You can’t visit San Diego without taking a trip to Balboa Park, and what better way to do it than by taking this two hour small group tour?

Link up with your guide at El Prado and begin seeing all that the park has to offer. Such as the 200 foot tall California Tower and the group of cottages at the Spanish Village Art Center. Hear about the park’s links with the Navy while sipping a complimentary cup of coffee along the way.

San Diego Walking Tours – Haunted Tours

Tequila, tacos, & tombstones food tour.

It’s time to visit San Diego’s Old Town Mexican style. Take a trip to the neighborhood’s outstanding Mexican eateries to try out several bites of local cuisine and some tequila-based drinks.

Listen to tellings about the past relationship between the Native Americans, Mexicans, and Spanish in the area. Pass by Whaley House Museum and an old cemetery to hear about the San Diego ghosts who have been spotted there.

This is a 2.5 hour, action-packed tour including food samples and drinks is definitely one of the most fun walking tours in San Diego. Your tour guide will be waiting for you at the front of the Cafe Coyote restaurant in Old Town.

Ghosts Of San Diego Walking Tour

Most people who visit San Diego come for the white sandy beaches, but there’s another aspect you can learn about on this Ghosts of San Diego walking tour.

Stroll around Old Town, taking in sinister accounts and ghastly tales about past sightings of spirits. Hearing these stories would make you think twice about going outside after dark.

Start your uncanny journey at Heritage Park Row, where your guide will meet you. Drop into three chilling locations over the space of 1.5 hours, including La Casa de Estudillo (one of the city’s oldest buildings) and Whaley House Museum. Plus El Campo Santo Cemetery, where the spirits go to play.

All ticket fees and taxes are paid with your booking.

San Diego Embarcadero Waterfront Ghost Tour

Come take in the eerie stories about the possessed ships down by San Diego’s Embarcadero Waterfront. See a different side of the city once the sun goes down on this one hour guided tour that fills you in on all of the shocking happenings that have gone on here over the years.

We’d classify this as one of the scariest tours in San Diego. It’s only suitable for teens and adults because of the nature of the stories told. Disturbing, right?

Start things off at Headquarters at Seaport to learn about the Old Police Headquarters; you’ll even get to pop your head into the cells. Check out USS Midway Museum to hear about the story behind the military ship.

End the tour at Star of India and Berkley Steamboat Ferry to find out about the supernatural happenings that have been reported.

Get picked up at Vino Carta and venture deep into the heart of Little Italy while being told intriguing stories about the district. You’ll take a few breaks along the way for some well-deserved Italian snacks and wine. Who said history and wine weren’t a thing?

This is a three hour all-inclusive tour, so everything is included in your booking. It’s a bit pricier than other picks on our list but well worth it for what you get. This is definitely one of the more unique San Diego walking tours!

Private Walking Tour Of Little Italy & Gaslamp Quarter

Why limit yourself to one neighborhood in downtown San Diego when you can take a tour of two? Sign up for this private walking tour of Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter.

Your dedicated guide will meet you at San Diego County Administration Center and show you the area’s remarkable sights for three hours. From companies founded by Italian immigrants to Victorian buildings, this is a day you don’t want to leave your camera at home.

San Diego Walking Tours – La Jolla

La jolla coast walking tour.

Head out to the pretty seaside area of La Jolla for this 1.5 hour coastal walking tour. Take the guesswork out of your travels and let the guide do all the hard work. They’ll meet you at the El Patio Building and begin with a saunter from Prospect Street to Girard Avenue.

Along the way, you’ll make over ten attraction stops. There’s plenty of walking involved, so wear comfortable shoes. Only your tour guide is included in the price, but there are no hidden fees, so you won’t be expected to fork out some unexpected cash unless you want to tip, of course.

La Jolla Self-Guided Audio Tour

Avoid the strict itineraries and rushing around by taking this self-guided audio tour of La Jolla. Ramble through the coastal town taking in rugged coastlines, posh shopping malls, churches, and historic buildings, all while going at your own pace without any disturbances.

It’s as simple as heading to Prospect Street (the starting location) and downloading an app and then you’re on your way. Plus, you don’t need any cell phone service, once it’s on your phone.

As you can see, America’s finest city, San Diego, has lots of excellent walking tours. Each with their own unique touch and exciting in their own way. In the end, each person will make their own decision and have an awesome time.
