Good Reflections shot Denali Range

"Terry & Eva are both so helpful and knowledgeable. With their help I got a pile of amazing landscape photos, including numerous pond/lake reflections. They helped me get my settings on my dslr correct while also helping a couple get great photos with their iPhones."

Snowy peeks in Denali

"Over the years I have taken several photography tours but is the best one that I have taken. Eva did a wonderful job getting us to great spots. She helped me get comfortable with shooting not on the auto mode. If back in Denali, I will book with them again."

Amber fields in the Denali range

"After many years, I finally learned what all the buttons on my SLR do, and how to use them! My tour was with Todd, who was very encouraging and helpful. He also helped me and my friend to compose better photos with our IPhones. It was a fantastic easy to spend our first afternoon, after arriving by train from Fairbanks. We had stellar weather, sky’s was crystal clear, so Todd took just a little extra time at the end of the tour, to drive us to a site where we could take beautiful shots of Denali. I am so happy that I did this tour, and it helped me take much better pictures ever since."

Stream, forest and mountains in the background

"Using this knowledge he was able to take us to the best views for both landscape and wildlife. His teaching skills and expertise in photography helped each of us to become better photographers and to bring home a portfolio of captivating pictures of the Denali area."

Denali Peeks reflecting in a lake

"Being part of a small group of guests (4 + Eva) made the event more relaxed and focused. Eva allowed us all the time we wanted, provided insights in using our equipment and was very personable. I would highly recommend this tour regardless of your photography expertise."

A bird's eye view of a snowy mountain range

"Todd was so helpful, showing me the finer points of using my camera to take awesome shots of flowers, landscapes, and wildlife. Appreciated the small group, personal experience. I would do it again if I return to Denali! Was definitely worth the money and time!"

White mountains under a pink sky

"The locations were amazing and I brought home not just some terrific photographs but also a renewed enthusiasm for photography. That much is priceless."

We honor and acknowledge Denali as the homeland of Alaska Native people, and we are thankful to be in such an inspiring place.

Alaska Native peoples have used Denali, the highest peak in North America, as a landmark for millennia. At 20,310 feet above sea level, the peak can be seen from hundreds of miles away on a clear day. Several Alaska Native groups have their own names for the mountain. The Koyukon Athabascans, who live closest to it, called it “Denali”, which means “the great one”. The area in and around Denali comprises part of the aboriginal homeland of five Northern Athabascan groups—Dena’ina, Koyukon, Lower Tanana, Upper Kuskokwim, and Western Ahtna. The affiliation of five Native groups with one national park is unique and illustrates the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the Denali area.

Guide Photography: Taking Pictures as a Tour Leader

A great tour leader works to create memorable experiences and puts in the extra effort to make sure their guests have a great time. Being in the service industry – we should always be on the lookout for new ways to be helpful and supportive. That’s why in today’s video we’re going to have a look at guide photography and tactics for taking great pictures of our customers.

As tour leaders we need to recognize that we are living in a golden age of photography. Never in human history have so many people had personal cameras, in one form or another, and used them so frequently.

According to Business Insider and InfoTrends , the world’s population captured a hundred billion more photos in 2017 than they did in 2016. As seen in the chart below from Statista — using InfoTrends’ data — with most of these photos taken on smartphones.

As tour leaders, we should expect the number of photos and videos taken on our tours to continue to rise.

If you are creating a truly remarkable experience – people will want to capture it through photos and videos. By understanding that this is a priority for our guests, we can seize the opportunity to be helpful.

By educating ourselves on the basics of photography, employing a few best practices and avoiding the most common pitfalls – we can dramatically elevate the quality of the images we capture.

So when a guest inevitably hands you their camera and asks for a photo – you can now wow and delight them in an entirely new way.

In this video, we’ll look at 10 tips to take better pictures as a tour leader. We’ll address some common mistakes, such as taking pictures of your guests from too far away, making poor lighting choices, having an overly distracting background, etc.

Because smartphone cameras are rapidly changing the way our guests take pictures, we’ve also created a bonus PDF for you. In ‘ Secrets to Spectacular Smartphone Photography – The Tour Guide’s Handbook ’ we’ll share some of the hidden features of smartphone cameras and share our best smartphone tricks for creating memorable images.

Over the course of our 10 guide photography tips, we’ll look at real-world examples of pictures taken on tour and discuss how they might have been improved.

As a quick example, have a look at the picture of the tour group below:

Guide Photography - Too far

The framing isn’t ideal, we can’t really make out the faces of the people in the shot, nor do we get a great sense of where the photo is taken.

Contrast this with the two photos below. Notice how we’ve solved some of the above problems and captured an image that is more worthy of being framed, shared or used as a photo album cover.

Guide Photography - Great photo guide photography

While photography is an art form – and rules should be broken from time to time – there are some guidelines and ‘rules of thumb’ that will instantly improve your photos.

With this video and PDF, you’ll not only be able to take great pictures FOR your guests, you’ll also be able to pass on what you’ve learned to your customers.

In my experience, guests are thrilled to learn new things about their camera and appreciate this kind of help. Showing someone how to use burst mode, adjust their image exposure or do a vertical panorama on their phone is great customer service.

Happy snapping and if you’re inspired, share this video with your friends and colleagues!

Great to have you here,

Hi there. Kelsey Tonner here from Be a Better Guide. Today, we’re sharing ten tips on how to take better pictures of your guests. I’m talking about those mental worthy, authentic feeling, best photos of the entire vacation kind of pictures because, let’s face it, you’ve taken a lot of bad pictures of your guests over the years just like me, like this one, or this one, or maybe even something like these.

Well, my friends, because we are always thriving to be the best tour leader we can be, let’s talk about how we can up our game when taking pictures for our guests.

Tip number one: check and clean the camera lens. Before taking any pictures, look at that lens to see if there’s humidity, dirt, dust, fingerprints, or even half-chewed pieces of candy. All of these are going to have an impact with the quality of your photo.

Especially since so many people these days are taking photos with their phones, check and wipe the lens with a clean microfiber cloth as needed. The cloth used for your sunglasses or reading glasses will work perfectly; and for our phone lens, a quick wipe with the clean part of your shirt will usually suffice.

Two: get closer to your guests. People are almost always the subject in our photographs who are often taking pictures that are too far back. People want to be able to see their smiling faces, so fill the frame with their head and upper body.

Don’t worry about capturing their knees, legs and toes. Usually, this means capturing less of the background and trying not to squeeze everything into the frame. Try a unique angle and move around, but remember that the guests are the main subjects in your photos.

Three: avoid digital zoom. Zooming in a smartphone almost always means a loss in quality as with any type of digital zoom. Also, when you’re zooming in on other types of camera, you increase the chance of motion blur and camera shake.

There are many exceptions especially with high quality lenses. You have legs and a movable body for a reason. Simply move closer to adjust your frame. Squat down, stand in something elevated, move around and ditch the zoom.

Four: keep the horizon level. Nothing ruins a great photo faster than a crooked horizon. Aside from artistic shots, the human brain almost always prefers a flat horizon. You can use a camera’s grid function to level things up; but most times, a quick horizon check before pushing the shutter will suffice.

Five: ensure people are in focus. The only thing more irritating than a crooked horizon is a blurry image. When you’re using a smartphone, be sure to tap the screen on the area you want to focus your image.

You can even lock the focus by pressing and holding that area for a couple of seconds, then readjust the frame as needed. Where should you focus? Directly on the eyes of your guests. Autofocus has improved substantially in almost all cameras, but always have a quick look in camera to make sure your guests are in focus.

Six: think about light. The best photographers in the world know that light is one of the most important variables when it comes to photography. Here’s some quick wins when it comes to light. Take photos of guests during the golden hours of the day.

These are the hours shortly after sunrise or before sunset where daylight is redder and softer and makes for beautiful photos. When shooting portraits, avoid sunny and direct light on faces whenever possible, which can create harsh shadows and a lot of squinting.

Putting the sun behind your guests isn’t a great idea either because it will darken their faces into silhouettes or the background will be white and overexposed. Do what you can with what you’re given, but don’t forget that overcast and cloudy days make for great photos.

Seven: shoot simple and uncluttered compositions. Framing compositions are part of what sets amazing photos apart from the rest. Now, it is an art form, but there are some guidelines that can get you pretty far. Remove all clutter from your photos and eliminate distracting elements in the background.

Move your body, the camera or even your guests to simplify what you see through the lens. Use the rule of thirds to mentally divide up your image using two horizontal lines and two vertical lines as seen here.

Then, position the important elements in your scene along those lines or at the points where they meet. In taking photos of people, place your subject’s eyes at the intersection of these lines to give the shot a clear focal point.

Eight: make people laugh. After taking a few pose photos, try a few jokes and get your guests to chuckle. When people are genuinely laughing, their smile takes on a more authentic quality. It will make your photos feel less static.

Try to take candid photos of you guests when they’re not posing and they don’t really know they’re being photographed. If you get some good ones, offer to send them by email. These could easily become trip favorites.

Nine: get to know great spots to take pictures. If you’re returning to the same spot over and over, then it is well worth your time to find the perfect spots to take pictures. For inspiration, have a look at postcards, Instagram or do a Google image search of the sites you visit.

What locations, angles or poses can you recreate with your guests?

Ten: shoot loads of photos. One of the best parts of the digital camera revolution is that we don’t have to worry about wasting film. Always snap at least six to ten images of your guests, trying different angles, ideas and especially after cracking you best jokes. If you’re only taking two to three photos with your guests’ camera, you’re reducing your chances of capturing that perfect moment.

As a quick review, check and clean the camera lens, get closer to your guests, avoid digital zoom, keep the horizon level, ensure people are in focus, think about light, shoot simple and uncluttered compositions, make people laugh, get to know great spots to take pictures and shoot loads of photos.

As an extra bonus, we have put together a special PDF guide to help you take better photos with your smartphone. It’s called Secrets to Spectacular Smartphone Photography: The Tour Guide’s Handbook. Inside, we’re going to show you some of the hidden features of your smartphone camera, plus I’ll share six of my favorite techniques for using a smartphone to capture memorable images.

Having this ability to coach and teach your guests on how to use their smartphone camera better is a great customer service. You can grab that PDF with the link below. If you enjoyed this video, please feel free to pass it on, sharing with your network is always appreciated.

Before you go, in the comments, let me know what advice you have for capturing great pictures with your guests. As always, thanks for being here and we’ll see you next time.

Okay. Let’s conclude with a humorous look at what tech companies think the elderly look like when they’re using their new smartphones. All right, Nana. You go, girl. I just love how simple it all is. We love tiny new technology; the smaller the screen, the better. Now, a little taste of reality.

Photo Guide Service

Guiding serious photographers is one of our specialties. We have worked with many professional photographers and know the changing light of Monument Valley like no one else. A custom guided photographic tour with our photo guides is the best way to realize the full photographic potential of this spectacular and legendary landscape.

For sunrise photos of the Totem Pole, we leave the Visitor Center an hour before sunrise. After sunrise, we then move on to one of three sand dune locations, and depending on available time we might visit two arches. Of course, 4 hours is not enough to exhaust the photographic possibilities of Monument Valley, but this is our shortest tour.

For an all-day photo experience, Our photo guides will take you out 4 hours in the morning and again for 4 hours in the evening. This leaves time in the middle of the day for lunch, napping or sightseeing. For the morning and evening, sunrise-sunset tour, $250 per person.

Custom Group Tours

We enjoy creating custom tours for groups of all sizes. We have also organized very successful workshops for photo groups. Tour operators and organizers should contact us directly with your needs.

Things to Remember

  • - We operate on daylight savings time. Utah time, not Arizona time.
  • - We start all of our tours from the Visitor's Center in Monument Valley.
  • - We have no set time for our tours. You get to set the time for your tour.
  • - Highway 163 runs north and south through Monument Valley. 1/4 mile north of Arizona, Utah state line there is an intersection. Turn East. Go 4 miles and you are at the Visitor's Center. There is a $5.00 per person Entrance Fee. This is a Navajo Tribal park, not a National Park. In the parking lot there is an information booth. At the booth ask for Carlos Phillips, Carl Phillips or Ray Begay. We work together.

To Book Your Tour

The easiest way to book your tour of Monument Valley is to call us - at 928 429-0665 or 928 429-0040. We delight in tailoring your Monument Valley tour to your particular interests and needs. In a sense, every Phillips' Photography Tours is a custom tour.

If you would like to arrange a special photo tour, or multi-day tour, or a tour for a large group, it is always a good idea to contact us well in advance. Monument Valley is still a rugged, rural location, almost a wilderness, with only sketchy phone service, and reliable email. So please call us at.

The cellular phone service has good days and bad days, so you might have to call more than once. However, our voice mail system is very dependable, so you can leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible. You can always write us (at the address below) or use our contact form and we will get back in touch with you.

Landscape and Nature Photography

Landscape and nature photography can take you anywhere and everywhere. When choosing a destination, consider both the scenery's appeal and the logistical challenges of reaching it. For instance, while Himalayan mountainscapes offer stunning photo opportunities, remember the physical exertion required to navigate steep terrains with heavy equipment.

Timing is also crucial in landscape photography, with the golden hours of early morning and late evening offering the most favorable lighting conditions.

Planning your trip around these optimal times can significantly enhance the quality of your photographs. Additionally, be mindful of seasonal variations, as weather conditions can profoundly impact the mood and atmosphere of your shots.

While rain and overcast skies may pose challenges, embracing the uniqueness of each season can elevate your images. For example, the colors of autumn forests or the transformative effects of snow can take your pictures to new heights of visual splendor.

Wildlife Photography

Capturing the essence of wildlife in its natural habitat demands both agility and precision from photographers and their equipment. Opt for gear capable of performing well in low-light conditions and capturing fast-moving subjects, which is essential for seizing those elusive moments in the wild.

Safaris offer unparalleled opportunities for wildlife observation and photography, particularly in Africa, renowned for its iconic safari parks and abundant Big Five sightings in the wilderness. Visitors from South America may consider exploring the Pantanal in Brazil or the Pampas in Bolivia , where wetland ecosystems teem with diverse fauna awaiting discovery.

Birding enthusiasts will find paradise in global birding hotspots, spanning continents and offering unparalleled opportunities to observe and photograph avian wonders. Remember to equip yourself with a quality zoom lens to capture these feathered beauties in all their glory.

Portrait and Street Photography

Capturing the essence of everyday life through street photography presents unique challenges and ethical considerations. Street photography involves capturing people in natural situations. If you ask permission first, it may ruin the shot, but you may get in trouble if you don't.

When photographing people in public spaces, striking a balance between spontaneity and respect for cultural norms is essential.

In some cultures, photographing individuals without explicit permission may be considered intrusive or disrespectful. For instance, in parts of Africa and among aboriginal Australians , cultural beliefs may dictate objections to being photographed without consent.

Similarly, in Western Europe, seeking permission before taking someone's photo is generally courteous, especially in candid street scenes. Particularly, avoid photographing children without explicit permission, as this can be perceived as invasive or inappropriate.

People expect to be paid for photos in some places, especially in poorer cities with many tourists. Similarly, in most places, if you take photographs of street performers, you are expected to pay them some money.

So, before beginning your street photography trip, research local customs and etiquette regarding photography. Be prepared to adapt your approach based on feedback from your subjects, respecting their wishes even if it means forgoing a potentially captivating shot. Ultimately, prioritizing respect and sensitivity ensures a positive and ethical street photography experience for both the photographer and the subject.

Underwater Photography

Underwater photography offers a unique perspective for adventurous travelers. While diving deep may require specialized equipment and expertise, stunning underwater shots can also be captured using accessible gear such as waterproof cameras or casings.

Seek out destinations with clear, shallow waters teeming with marine life and vibrant underwater landscapes. From the colorful coral reefs of Indonesia to encounters with majestic humpback whales in the Dominican Republic and the incomparable Galapagos Islands , each destination offers unparalleled opportunities for snorkeling and underwater exploration.

Architecture and Monument Photography

Capturing the essence of architectural marvels and historic monuments requires more than just pointing and shooting — it demands a keen eye for detail and creativity. While iconic cities like Paris and Vienna offer picturesque streets lined with stunning buildings, destinations like Egypt and Cambodia boast awe-inspiring monuments that beg to be photographed.

When photographing structures, seek out the extraordinary and the unique. Rather than capturing cliché shots of famous landmarks, explore lesser-known sights and experiment with unconventional angles to infuse your photos with originality.

Whether getting low to the ground or seeking vantage points from above, find innovative perspectives to elevate your architectural photography to new heights.

Why Consider Joining a Photography Tour?

A photography trip offers an enriching experience for both amateur and seasoned photographers alike. These specialized tours provide expert guidance from experienced professionals, allowing participants to refine their photography skills while exploring captivating destinations.

During a photography vacation, travelers can gain access to unique and lesser-known locations, presenting endless opportunities for stunning and memorable photo captures. Shooting with fellow photographers fosters a sense of community and presents networking opportunities. You can share insights and learn from one another's experiences.

Beyond photography, participants can immerse themselves in local cultures, traditions, and lifestyles, adding depth and richness to their travel adventures and incredible shots.

Why the trips are not by train with the Japan Rail Pass?

As we look to be at the right moment in the perfect place, moving by car it’s the cheapest and most comfortable way. Also, as our trips are based on groups of 4 persons with a guide, we move with small vans around Japan. This way we can adapt the schedules to our own interests. If we decided to use the JR Pass and travel by Shinkansen bullet train, we not will have the same freedom.

Can you take pictures in Japan?

For sure, you can take photos in all public places in Japan. You just need to ask for permissions if you have commercial purposes as in most countries of the world. And like other places, you can find the international signs that could tell you to not take photos. If you are not sure, kindly ask a local. Take a look at our gallery of Photos in Japan!

Can you travel now?

Yes, with the actual situation enter to Japan is possible for almost all countries. You can keep your seat now as bookings are going fast!

You will need to travel with an official travel agency and get the ERFS certificate. We have our own local agency in Japan, so with us, travel to Nippon is easy!

Which currency is used?

In Japan, the currency is the Japanese Yen.

Don’t think that you can pay everywhere with a credit card in Japan. Although you can’t pay in euros , you can convert once there to the Japanese Yen at the same airport. We suggest changing around 300-500 euros or dollars and use your travel credit card  there.

How much money will you need for your trip?

You should plan to spend around ¥3,000 ($28) per day on our photo tours in Japan , which is the average daily price based on meals that are not included.

Why is food so cheap ?

It´s because the purchasing power and standard of living of the Japanese are very high. You can buy a decent meal with a low budget . As a basic necessity, Japanese cuisine is relatively inexpensive compared to the level of life in Japan.

shijuku street photography

Do I need a Visa to enter?

To  enter Japan you need a passport and a visa unless you are from a country that is visa-exempt . In case you need it, the Japanese government is going to introduce the e-visa. In case is not currently implemented, you will need to visit the Japanese embassy or consulate to apply for a  visa .

What month is the cheapest fly?

According to different flight searches, the cheapest months to take a flight to Japan is from January to April. Although in March is cherry blossoms, you can find economic flights. The high season is summer, so even in November-December, you can find good deals.

Why is tipping rude in the country?

The Japanese culture is based on the belief that the price includes already good service . This way, pay extra can be considered insulting. Respect the cultural rules, even if it looks strange for you. Simply be polite , and say thanks to the waiter or waitress after enjoying the service.

Well-used and complete photography tour, with good photography scenes

The spring tour through Japan was absolutely full of wonderful photographic opportunities and great camaraderie. With only four participants we all got to know each other well and got to see the most beautiful sites. Eduardo was easy-going with good humour (and excellent music taste) and tremendous photographic experience. The accommodations were excellent and this has to be the best value Japan Cherry Blossoms tour on the market.

tour guide photo

This Japan tour was not only well organized, but also a lot of fun. We had a great group of photographers with a lot of camaraderie and humor visiting great sites, we would never have found without Eduardo’s fine insight. Highly recommended!

tour guide photo

PhotoWorldTour’s JapanSakura tour was both a highlight and a sustained happy pill. In the course of a few days, we traveled in Spanish through large parts of Japan’s most beautiful areas. Eduardo – as well as his lucky mascot Missifou – is the best tour guide I’ve had. Relaxed, funny and so democratically oriented that we called him “our glorious leader” without being the least bit ironic. We stayed in good hotels and got up before sunrise to get the best possible photos. Then a small pause before the next image sequence..etc. Collectively, we covered larger parts of central Japan in a way that we certainly wouldn’t have been able to do without his knowledge. This was fun, simply 🌹

7 Useful Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

By Harrison Pierce

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.

Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.

Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.

Discover the best apps for travelers:

Apps for flying, apps for exploring, apps for photo sharing.

Image may contain: Aircraft, Airliner, Airplane, Transportation, Vehicle, and Flight

My favorite app on this list is Flighty, a must-have for any frequent flier . The free version is fantastic, but I recommend splurging for the premium version, which gives you even more useful information and comes at a reasonable cost of $48 per year. The functionality it provides more than justifies the price.

The free version allows you to input all future flights plus past journeys you've taken within the last year. It provides updated information if any schedule changes occur to upcoming flights and allows you to track all the miles you’ve flown in one place.

The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.

Image may contain: Gun, Weapon, Shooting, and Spiral

Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.

Image may contain: Logo, and First Aid

There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.

Image may contain: Symbol, First Aid, Text, and Logo

This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.

Image may contain: Paper, and Ice

Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.

Image may contain: Sign, Symbol, Road Sign, and Weapon

This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Users can also create easily accessible guides filled with up-to-date information to help you plan your own trip.

Image may contain: Symbol, Number, Text, and First Aid

Steller is another app that a friend recently introduced me to, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. It uses a combination of AI and user experiences to help you plan trips around the globe. From recommendations of things to see, like the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires or the Royal Palace of Naples, to full guidebooks created by users, you can get inspired, book experiences, and discover hidden gems within this app.

Amazing animals for a Tiger Safari or Tour.</p> <p>The South Chinese tiger is considered <a href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/23-most-endangered-animals-in-asia/" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinct</a> in the accessible wilderness. According to the WWF species lexicon, experts assume that there are only a few isolated individuals, if at all. Therefore, the last hope of preserving the species lies in the few animals in Chinese zoos. The remaining five species now live in only 13 countries in Asia. Most of them are native to India, where it is estimated that there are about 1700 tigers.</p> <p>The World Wide Fund For Nature (<a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/" rel="noreferrer noopener">WWF</a>) assumes that less than ten percent of the original habitat is left. The reasons are manifold. For example, mineral resources such as coal or oil are extracted in some regions. Deforestation of the <a class="wpil_keyword_link" title="rainforest" href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/animals-in-the-rainforest/">rainforest</a> is also a significant problem, as is the development of inaccessible areas by roads.</p> <p>Poachers are also a great danger. They hunt the tigers because they can sell the big cats’ body parts well. Because claws, teeth, brain, and other parts are processed into medicine in traditional Chinese medicine and are in great demand. Hunting tigers as trophies have cost many animals their lives, especially in the last century.</p> <p><strong>The <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/" rel="noreferrer noopener">IUCN</a> red list puts the Tiger status to <a class="wpil_keyword_link " title="endangered" href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/the-10-most-endangered-animals/">endangered</a>: </strong></p>

How Dangerous are Tigers?

Do you like Big Animals?  We collected ideas on the Best Places to see Hippos , Elephants , Giraffes , or Rhinos .

That is why wild animals respect them. But if a trainer, for example, stumbles and loses his position of power, it can become dangerous even for him. Also, to strange tigers, he would not dare to enter the cage. By the way, in the wilderness, animals only rarely attack humans. If, for example, a shark hurts a surfer, it is only because he mistakes him for a seal. You can see this because, unlike its usual prey, it does not eat it.

Nevertheless, some people can go into a tiger or lion cage without being attacked, for example, tamers in the circus. They know their animals well and are something like the leader.

For Tiger, a human being is a big animal. And when an animal is in its enclosure, the tiger wants to hunt it because he has an innate hunting instinct.

Approximately 100 people die every year due to attacks by tigers. Probably, humans are often to blame for this themselves because they provoke the animals.

Tigers in Zoos and National Parks

The consequences for the animals are fatal: Massive damage to their health, severe behavioral disorders, and increased mortality.  This Tiger Safari or Tour guide should highlight only sustainable places to go.

  • Perform feats for which they are often trained by force,
  • Have to change venues 50 times a year on average,
  • Spend most of their time in small cages, inadequate enclosures, or in the transport wagon,
  • That essential species-specific behavior such as social contacts or movement are considerably restricted or made completely impossible,
  • that they have little variety or occupation,
  • that they are often not fed and cared for appropriately,
  • That veterinary control or care is often inadequate because there are only a few specialized veterinarians for wild animals nationwide or the circus cannot or will not afford the treatment financially,
  • that in many cases the circus operators lack the necessary expertise,
  • that there is no fixed winter quarters during the play-free period. Only about every tenth company can call a winter accommodation its own.

Nevertheless, animals of wild species can still be seen in many circus operations that travel around the world: Tigers, lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, sea lions or monkeys – the range of animal species carried along is extensive. Wild animals suffer in the circus. They suffer massively, because:

A guide to Bruce Springsteen’s long-awaited return to Vegas

The Boss has done seven tours since his last stop in Las Vegas, playing everywhere from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Oslo, Norway. But the wait is over.

T he wait is over, 4,230 days later.

Bruce Springsteen last played Las Vegas on Aug. 18, 2002, at the Thomas & Mack Center.

He’s done seven tours since, performing hundreds of shows, playing everywhere from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Oslo, Norway.

And yet every time, Vegas was left off the list.

Only The Boss knows, but maybe he’ll share a little insight when he finally takes the stage locally once again at T-Mobile Arena on Friday.

Because it’s been so long since Springsteen hit town, we put together a handy concert guide to help prepare you for his return.

Wear comfy shoes

“Life is a marathon, not a race,” a wise man once said.

Actually, it was Dr. Phil who coined the phrase, but let’s not split (brick-thick facial) hairs.

Point is, Bruce Springsteen gigs have long been known for being, well, long — and this is a good thing. It’s like the rock ’n’ roll equivalent of the all-you-can-eat breadsticks at Olive Garden, sans the carbs and shame.

Now, The Boss isn’t turning in the kind of record-setting, four-hour-long shows he did back in 2016 during select dates of his “50 Gallon Drums of Redbull and Fistfuls of Trucker Speed Tour.” (OK, it was actually “The River Tour.” Again with the nitpicking!)

But he still performed for a solid three hours and played over two dozen songs a night on average during last year’s “Springsteen and E Street Band 2023 Tour,” the next leg of which launched Tuesday in Phoenix.

Be prepared to pace yourself as the show comes to Vegas — when Springsteen plays “Prove It All Night,” he’s speaking literally.

Maybe bring a hanky as well

Three tunes in, he finds himself in fate’s crosshairs.

“Time is my hunter,” Springsteen sings over stirring, cresting guitars on “Burnin’ Train,” from his most recent studio album, 2020’s “Letter to You.”

“Take me and shake me from this mortal cage,” he adds a few refrains later as if watching the sand in an hourglass pile up — and reckoning with it in song.

It’s a theme that pervades the record, which looks back on a life closer to its end than its beginning.

“One minute you’re here,” Springsteen sings on the album-opening song of the same name. “Next minute you’re gone,” setting the tone for a reflective yet rousing record, in which emotions and guitars ring out loudly in unison.

This same spirit of remembrance informed Springsteen’s most recent tour, which had its tear-jerking moments.

During “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” for instance, images of late band members Daniel Federici and Clarence Clemons, who died in 2008 and 2011, respectively, were displayed on video screens.

The show then ended with Springsteen alone onstage, performing an acoustic version of “Letter” closer “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

“Death is not the end,” Springsteen sings on the tune.

Speaking of which …

Get ready to ‘Twist and Shout’ (maybe)

It’s like a vampire’s bite, a great song.

It can grant a measure of immortality to those who made it, a gift of timelessness even after their time on Earth has expired.

That’s what the Commodores’ 1985 hit “Nightshift” is all about: a stirring tribute to soul titans Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, both of whom died the year before, a reminder that even though they’re gone, their voices will never follow suit.

Springsteen delivers a poignant, impassioned reading of the song on his 2022 covers album, “Only the Strong Survive,” continuing a theme of reflection that began on “Letters.”

The song was a set list staple during Springsteen’s touring last year, played almost nightly, along with the band’s well-traveled take on the Patti Smith Group’s “Because the Night,” a fan favorite for decades now.

Cover tunes have always been part of the Springsteen live experience, and the band’s most recent outing included — at various dates — airings of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped,” The Weavers’ “Pay Me My Money Down,” Ben E. King’s “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied),” The Top Notes’ “Twist and Shout,” Moon Mullican’s “Seven Nights to Rock,” Tom Waits’ “Jersey Girl” and The Standells’ “Dirty Water.”

But out of all these songs, it was “Nightshift” that the band performed the most, playing it at all but two shows.

“Gonna be some sweet sounds / Comin’ down / On the nightshift,” Springsteen intones in his take on the tune. “I bet you’re singing proud,” he notes at song’s end, leading by example.

Expect a few surprises and lots of standards

Like those tramps in “Born to Run,” Springsteen set lists were once defined by impulsiveness.

Sure, there have always been staples, those classic cuts that are as much a part of the Springsteen live experience as the sweat on The Boss’ brow.

But from one show to the next, you never quite knew what to expect song-wise, as Springsteen and company were fond of mixing it up.

These days, the band has settled into more of a solidified set list for a given tour.

Of the 26 songs Springsteen played on average during each date of his previous outing, half of them were performed every night, with another 10 aired at most shows.

This still leaves room for variance and a few surprises.

Vintage cuts such as “Atlantic City,” “I’m on Fire,” “Ramrod” and “Night,” to name but a few Springsteen chestnuts rarely played in recent years, all popped up here and there.

But mostly you’re going to get a lot of songs you know by heart, from “Dancing in the Dark” to “Badlands” to “The Rising.”

And as for all those “Glory Days”?

Yeah, they’ll pass you by.

But not just yet.

How to stay safe during the April 8 solar eclipse

Here's how to protect your eyes and stay safe during the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

A girl observes the total solar eclipse with solar eclipse glasses at Times Square in New York City, United States on August 21, 2017.

1. Get certified eclipse glasses ahead of the event

2. know when to use solar eclipse glasses, 3. prepare for backcountry travel, 4. pay attention to weather and conditions, 5. stay safe in cities, 6. don't get lost, and avoid traffic jams.

A solar eclipse will be visible across North America on April 8 .

Everyone in the U.S. will see at least a partial solar eclipse , but only those within the 115-mile-wide (185 kilometers) path of totality will witness the sun's face completely blocked by the moon's shadow for up to 4 minutes, 28 seconds.

Only during totality — when the sun's face is completely blocked — is it safe to look at the totally eclipsed sun's corona with the naked eye. At all other times, including during the partial phase of the eclipse, you must wear certified solar eclipse glasses to view the sun.

There are some safety issues to be aware of at other times, too.  Here are six tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable viewing of the solar eclipse.

Related: How to observe the sun safely (and what to look for)

a family look up toward the sun wearing eclipse glasses, they are all smiling.

Solar eclipse glasses are plentiful and inexpensive. Buy them before stocks run low, and get them only from this list of verified suppliers of safe solar filters and viewers on the American Astronomical Society's AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force website. Only then can you be sure that they comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard, which means they reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels and block all but a tiny fraction of solar UV and IR radiation.

Do NOT use sunglasses, solar filters meant for cameras and telescopes, smoked glass, welder's goggles, photographic or X-ray film, potato-chip bags or DVDs to view the partially eclipsed sun . None of these methods are safe.

eclipse sequence 2017 showing the sun become increasingly eclipsed by the moon.

You can use solar eclipse glasses to look at the sun anytime. Typically, however, solar eclipse glasses are used to view the sun from the moment the moon starts to cross it — a time known as first contact. You must use solar eclipse glasses to look at the eclipse whenever the sun is only partially covered, which is the entire time on April 8 for most of North America.

Although the path of totality on April 8 will include several major cities and metropolitan areas, it crosses a lot of backcountry. Many people will chase clear skies, which could take them to areas they hadn't planned on visiting. Remote parts of Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, in particular, are short on facilities and gas stations. So bring everything you need, including a full fuel tank and extra food, water, cash and toilet paper.

In April, you can expect the unexpected, with everything from snow in the Northeast to tornadoes in the Midwest. In remote areas of the northeastern U.S. and Canada, the mountains, lakes and forests may provide a beautiful backdrop, but conditions in the backcountry that time of year can be difficult.

"Since visitors may not be familiar with the area's ever-changing weather and early spring conditions, our most important role is to share important information about being safe and well-prepared and about the planned events throughout the region," representatives from the Adirondacks' Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) said in a statement .

ROOST encourages people  to avoid mountain trails and waters. Read up on the climate along the eclipse track , look at weather forecasts and decide the best place to watch the eclipse the day before the event.

A women wearing solar viewing glasses reacts while looking at the sun during a solar eclipse near Columbus Circle in New York, U.S., on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017.

If you decide to watch the eclipse from a city sidewalk — perhaps even during a lunch break at work — then watch out. Wandering into roads and other dangerous situations is easier than you might think when you're looking through solar eclipse glasses. The best, easiest and safest eclipse-observing site is an open space or park, which will likely have a much better view of the eclipse than city streets, where buildings could easily block the view.

The biggest cities inside the path are Mazatlán and Torreón, Mexico; San Antonio, Austin and Dallas, Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton, Ontario; Montreal Quebec.

Relocating at the last minute in search of clear weather is not particularly recommended unless the roads are clear and you have multiple backup plans. An excellent way to monitor the traffic situation both before and after the eclipse is to use Google Maps or similar apps to monitor live traffic information.

Related: Solar eclipse jam: How to avoid getting stuck in traffic on April 8, 2024

However, you need to know your destination. A great way to begin your research is to use an interactive eclipse map and note the eclipse schedules for various locations in advance. Fred Espenak's Road Atlas for the Total Solar Eclipse of 2024 and Michael Zeiler's Field Guide to the 2023 and 2024 Solar Eclipses ensure you have a spiral-bound hard copy of the path of totality in case you lose your cellphone connection. A great option is to download the Solar Eclipse Timer App , which provides audio commentary on exactly what to expect and when to expect it and instantly tells you if you're inside the path of totality.

What Is Going on With Kate Middleton?

All the latest royal drama surrounding the Princess of Wales, explained.

Ever since Kate Middleton had abdominal surgery in January , unanswered questions about her health and recovery have only multiplied. From the beginning, Kensington Palace said they would be keeping the Princess of Wales's diagnosis private , explaining, "She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private."

But when Prince William bowed out of attending a memorial service for King Constantine of Greece at the last minute, speculation regarding Kate's health exploded online . That was almost three weeks ago. In the days since, there have been two paparazzi photos of Kate (after no sightings of her since Christmas ), an official photograph released by the Palace that was later recalled by multiple major photo agencies due to image manipulation ( Kate later issued an official apology for editing the photograph), and a video of the Princess taken in Windsor .

But all this drama raises the question: What is going on with Kate Middleton? Let's break it down.

topshot britain royals

The drama began when Prince William missed a memorial service.

After the shock of Kate Middleton's surgery wore off, news surrounding her health subsided. That relative quiet ended on February 27, when Prince William missed a memorial service for his godfather, leading Kensington Palace to provide an update on Kate, saying she continues to be doing well. But William's absence, coupled with the tragic passing of Thomas Kingston , led to an explosion of speculation about Kate's whereabouts and wellbeing . In response, a spokesperson for Kate told T&C , "Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the Princess' recovery and we'd only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands." That didn't do much to calm social media.

An (unauthorized) paparazzi photo is taken of Kate.

Less than a week after William missed the service, Kate was photographed in the passenger seat of a car driven by her mom, Carole Middleton , near Windsor. The blurry picture showed the Princess of Wales wearing large sunglasses. UK media declined to publish the photo, but it appeared in some U.S. outlets.

As Victoria Murphy noted in T&C , "There is no specific media blackout on this. That kind of agreement between the media and the Palace is actually very rare." However, the press is subject to " strict legal and ethical codes," which include an individual's right to privacy—they applied to this photograph of Kate. As Murphy writes, "When photographers are asked to stay away from trying to capture private moments, not only do they know that there could be legal repercussions from ignoring this, they also know that there is a limited market for these images as the vast majority of UK publications just won’t go near them."

A portrait of Kate and her three kids is released by the Palace.

a group of people posing for the camera

To celebrate UK Mother's Day on March 10, Kensington Palace shared an image of Kate and her three children . "Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day," read a message signed "C" (for Catherine, Kate's full name). The photograph showed Kate with her arms wrapped around her children Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte, as her eldest, Prince George, stood behind her. In the photo, Kate notably was not wearing her wedding or engagement rings .

Later in the day, photo agencies—i.e. the organizations that distribute photos to news sites worldwide, like Getty Images—issued a kill notice on the photo, recalling it and instructing news sites to remove it from their coverage . As the Associated Press noted , " close study of the image revealed inconsistencies that suggested it had been altered, for instance in the alignment of Princess Charlotte's left hand with the sleeve of her sweater." Image standards are strict for news wires; the AP, for example, does not use altered or digitally manipulated images (which they deemed this photograph to be).

Kate apologizes for editing the photograph.

Around 24 hours after the photo of Kate was shared, the Princess of Wales issued a personal apology for editing it. "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day," she wrote, again signing it "C," indicating that it was a personal message.

This statement, while confirming the photograph was digitally altered, didn't do much to quell new conspiracy theories that had arisen around Kate , including the suggestion that the photograph was not taken by Prince William last week, as Kensington Palace said it was. The Palace has not shared the original image, and photo agencies have reported that a replacement will not be sent for the recalled photograph.

Controversy around the photo, and Kate's absence from public life, also lead to the reemergence of rumors about Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley and Prince William—with most notably Stephen Colbert saying, "The kingdom has been all a flutter by the seeming disappearance of Kate Middleton. Well now, internet sleuths are guessing that Kate’s absence may be related to her husband and the future King of England William having an affair." A week later, through her lawyers, Hanbury denied all allegations of an affair , saying "the rumors are completely false."

Kate and William are pictured leaving Windsor Castle, and then captured on video in Windsor.

After Kate's apology was posted on March 11, a paparazzi photographed Kate and William leaving Windsor Castle . Kate's head is turned in the image, so you cannot see her face clearly, but she was en route to a private appointment while William was going to attend Commonwealth Day Service. Unlike the photograph of Kate in the car with her mom, this one was published by UK media.

The next weekend, a week after UK Mother's Day, Kate and William are filmed shopping at a local farm stand in Windsor , near their home, Adelaide Cottage . The video was published on March 18; per the Sun , who posted the footage to their website, they chose to share it "in a bid to bring an end to what the Palace has called the 'madness of social media.'" In the video, Kate walks next to William, and they each carry grocery bags.

The timeline of Kate's return to public duties is still not clear.

the british royal family attend the christmas morning service

When Kate's surgery was initially announced in January, the Palace said, "Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter." Easter is Sunday, March 31; the royal family typically attends church at St. George's Chapel on Easter Sunday. A report published in the Times suggested that the Princess may not return to public duties until after George, Charlotte and Louis's Easter break ends, which is on April 17. (The same report also suggested Kate could discuss her health and recovery when she returns to public duties.)

When the UK's Ministry of Defence announced on their website she would be appearing at Trooping the Colour on June 15, 2024 ( Trooping is a major royal event, a birthday parade in honor of the monarch), Kensington Palace quickly made it clear that the Ministry does not speak for the Princess of Wales. T&C understands that the Palace was not consulted on the announcement, and her attendance will not be confirmed by anyone but the Palace.

In addition, when Prince William's 2024 Earthshot Prize was announced to be in South Africa in November, there was no confirmation regarding the Prince or Princess's attendance.
