Explore the top 10 Korean travel SIM cards that guarantee seamless connectivity and the best Korean SIM card coverage while you explore Korea. Stay connected with ease!

Staying connected is crucial in today’s world. Without our phones and access to the internet, it’s easy to feel lost. A fantastic option is to get a SIM card in Korea. Korea travel SIM cards will allow you to access the internet quickly and easily without having to search for free WiFi. Free WiFi can be risky, and finding and logging in to each WiFi hotspot can be a chore.

Coverage of Korean SIM Cards

You don’t need to worry about a SIM card’s functionality in Korea. Korea boasts the world’s best LTE coverage. It’s now completely covered! Furthermore, this is just in reference to 4G (LTE) coverage. Beyond that, practically every location outside of the areas with 90% coverage offers 3G.

In a nutshell, cellphone coverage is available in practically every part of Korea. So don’t be concerned about mobile reception wherever you go in Korea.

What are the requirements for possessing Korea travel SIM cards?

While traveling in Korea, getting a SIM card or a portable WiFi gadget known as a ‘ WiFi egg ‘ is pretty straightforward and doesn’t take much time! Bring your passport to the desk or store. You will almost always be required to demonstrate your identity in order to obtain a SIM. You’ll need an ARC if you’re going to keep a Korean SIM for more than 90 days.

Make a reservation ahead of time. Don’t worry if you didn’t make a reservation in advance! Other options exist as well. After receiving the SIM, you must complete a brief application process. This usually involves providing your name and the IMEI (a mobile device identifying number), but don’t worry, the procedure is quick!

Top 10 Korean Travel SIM cards

1. klook sim cards.

Klook offers four distinct lengths of SIM cards. The cards cost US$ 14.09 for three days and US$ 55.99 for 30 days. Klook SIM cards aren’t the cheapest. They are, nonetheless, a well-known website with thousands of regular visitors. Klook will provide you with excellent service and an easy-to-use interface. You can choose between data only or data with voice calling and text features. The service is provided by KT Olleh, Korea’s largest network provider offering the best Korean SIM card coverage.

2. Trazy SIM Cards

Compared to Klook, Trazy has a few additional possibilities. They have more options than most other sellers, ranging from 1 day to 90 days. Pickup locations include Hongdae Station, Seoul Station, and Gimpo/Incheon Airport. They have some of the better alternatives accessible if you plan on staying for three or seven days. You can usually get unlimited data and optional voice and SMS features.

3. SIM Cards from KKday

The durations of KKday and Klook, and Trazy are the same. Korean travel SIM cards are also available, identical to those used in the US. As a result, we recommend that you check all the sites to determine who is offering the best deals when you make your appointment. Incheon Airport/Gimpo Airport/Hongdae and Busan ( Gimhae Airport /Harbour) in Seoul are both available for pickup of KKday Sim cards. The prices appear to be almost equal to those offered by the other sellers. On the other hand, the ability to add prepaid calls and messages may be beneficial to some people.

4. KoreaTravelEasy SIM

KoreaTravelEasy provides similar services to the others. You can get an unlimited 4G/LTE prepaid sim card connected ok Korea’s largest network company KT (Olleh). The greatest difference with KoreaTravelEasy is that they charge in US dollars, meaning pricing can fluctuate much more. Pickup locations include Seoul (Incheon Airport/Gimpo Airport/Hongdae), Busan (Gimhae Airport), and Jeju (Incheon Airport/Gimpo Airport/Hongdae) (Jeju Airport) KoreaTravelEasy’s solutions are slightly more costly than the alternatives. However, for some travelers, the fact that they provide Jeju as a pickup place will be really convenient.

5. Korea SI M Gold

The most uncomplicated and most affordable card is Korea Sim Gold. This card gives 4G LTE data on the SKT network – a great network offering the best Korean SIM card coverage! You’ll get unlimited data for the duration of your choice, and these cards are among the cheapest (if not the lowest) SIM cards available in Korea for travelers.

6. Korea SI M Blue

Korea Sim Blue is comparable to Korea Sim Orange, except it comes with an additional local Korean phone number, unlimited voice calls and text messages. This phone is compatible with the KT network and offers unlimited LTE data.

7. Korea eSIM Red

Korea Sim’s other option is Korea Sim Red. This card comes with 4G LTE unlimited data plus a phone number for Q-Code. Like the others, this card is dependent on a certain time frame. so you simply have to choose the duration you want the SIM to be active.

8. Evergreen SIM Card

Another SIM card that is currently accessible for visitors in Korea is the Evergreen SIM Card, popularly known as the EG SIM. This SIM card is quite comparable in price and pickup location to the others listed below. EG SIM is an excellent choice if you need to make calls because it is less expensive than other competitors. They provide both SIMs with unlimited data and SIMs with minutes and data. Incheon Airport, Gimpo Airport, Seoul Station, and Hongdae are all available for pickup.

9.  Woori Mobile Services

After reviewing their costs, I discovered that they had some exciting plans for visitors visiting Korea! Woori only has 30-day prepaid plans, but they have a lot of them, so they’re beneficial in a lot of scenarios. To begin with, 30-day Korean SIM cards with unlimited data typically cost $50 or more. Many people, on the other hand, do not require unrestricted data access. Woori could be excellent for you if that’s the case with a decent Korean SIM card coverage.

10. NeoKOSIM

The last service on our list is NeoKOSIM. This mobile service offers the most plans and services to diverse customers. Unlimited data, as well as unlimited call and text subscriptions, are available. If you don’t need infinite, limited solutions are also accessible. Seoul (Incheon Airport/Gimpo Airport/Hongdae) and Busan (Gimhae/Harbour) are among the pickup places. While these cards are more expensive than the other services on this list, NeoKOSIM also offers a pay-as-you-go alternative. You can put 40,000 KRW on the card, which you can use for data, calls, or texts.

In the old days, we used to discover a country easily without tourist SIM cards, but it has become much easier to uncover off-the-beaten-path locations since the launch of these best SIM cards for Korea. It allows you to go further into South Korea and have a more authentic, non-touristy experience.

Klook Japan 4G SIM Card Review – Cheapest SIM Card With Unlimited 4G Data For 8 Days

For my recent trip to Tokyo, I bought a 4G SIM card with unlimited data from Klook. Among all the SIM cards I found online, this provided the best value and had the lowest price. It almost sounded too good to be true, and initially I was a little worried that it would not work properly. Luckily, my worries turned out to be unfounded and I enjoyed great connectivity throughout my holiday. This article was last updated on 08 November 2019.

Klook Japan 4G SIM Card (JP pick up)

klook travel sim

There are three types of SIM cards:

  • 1GB Data For 6 Days (USD10)
  • 3GB Data For 8 Days (USD15)
  • Unlimited 4G Data For 8 Days (USD22)

“1GB Data For 6 Days” and “3GB Data For 8 Days” SIM Cards

For the 1GB and 3GB SIM cards, you get to enjoy 4G data for 6 days and 8 days respectively. After you finish using the 4G data, you will still get to use unlimited 200kbps data.

To get an idea of how fast (or slow) this speed is, “200kbps” means you can download 200KB of data per second, which is equivalent to 12MB per minute. A website like Facebook has a page size of about 1.4MB, while this article has a similar size of about 1.5MB. This means technically you would need about 7 to 8 seconds to load each of these two websites. This may be unacceptably slow by today’s internet speed standards, but at least you would still have internet access.

Note that both SIM cards above do not allow you to make calls or send SMS.

“Unlimited 4G Data For 8 Days” SIM Card

klook travel sim

For the Unlimited Data SIM card , you get to enjoy unlimited 4G data for 8 days! I bought two of these SIM cards for the wife and me.  The choice was pretty obvious to me. For just a small premium, I would get to enjoy unlimited data throughout my trip!

What’s more, this was the cheapest unlimited 4G data SIM card I could find online. Since my holiday was also for 8 days, it was perfect for me.

This SIM card does not allow for making or receiving calls. However this was not a big problem for me since I didn’t have the need to make any calls in Japan. As for calling back to Singapore, I can always use Whatsapp or Facebook voice calls.

There is a small (and rather amusing) caveat: once you use more than 30GB*, the data speed will be reduced to 3G. Well, honestly I think it would be really difficult to use even 10GB in 8 days.

* I was informed by one reader that actually most (or all) local SIM cards in Japan will get their speed reduced to 3G once the data usage hits about 5GB, and not 30GB. I didn’t experience this, probably because I didn’t hit the limit, so I cannot verify if this is indeed the case.

**I did a quick search online and found that Japan is indeed governed by a “Fair Usage Policy”. This is basically a way for the network providers to force customers to use mobile data in moderation. I am not sure what is the “official” limit, but it is true that once a certain threshold is crossed, the speed will be throttled, leading to significantly slower connectivity. Like I mentioned I didn’t experience any throttling, but if you plan to use data heavily you might want to take note of this!

Fast and Reliable Internet!

klook travel sim

Both our SIM cards worked perfectly! We enjoyed strong connectivity throughout the trip, even when we went to further areas like Lake Kawaguchi.

We were connected to the 4G network most of the time. In areas with poorer connectivity like train tunnels or basements, we would still be connected to the 3G network.

klook travel sim

1. First, I went to the Klook Japan 4G SIM Card  website.

2. Next, I selected the Unlimited 4G data SIM card, and indicated the date and quantity. After my purchase, Klook emailed me the voucher. With this voucher, I would need to collect my SIM card at the airport in Japan on my day of arrival.

The voucher was also immediately uploaded into my Klook App under “bookings”. I personally find this app to be very useful because all my Klook bookings are consolidated in one place.

3. After arriving at the Haneda Airport International Terminal, I went to find the counter to collect our SIM cards. This was a breeze. I followed the Klook website directions and went to the exit of the arrival lobby on the second floor. I located the Klook counter easily on the right side. There was no queue when we arrived. You can see the picture of the counter above. The counter opens daily from 8.30am to 10pm.

4. At the counter, the friendly Klook staff helped me to activate our SIM cards. After scanning my Klook voucher QR code, he activated both cards. I was pleasantly surprised to find that he spoke Chinese, which made communication a lot easier. He advised us to insert our SIM cards on the spot so that he could assist us if we had any issues. We did so and luckily both our SIM cards had no problems.

How To Activate SIM Card By Yourself

klook travel sim

Remember to follow the instructions under “Notice” to delete your network driver AFTER your holiday, otherwise you will have problems using other pre-paid SIM cards in future.

Case in point: I didn’t delete the driver and when I went to London a few months later, my SIM card could not work until I deleted the network driver.

How to Unlock SIM Card

If you are unlucky and your SIM card is locked by your carrier, you will NOT be able to use this SIM card. Personally I do not have this problem and have always been able to use foreign SIM cards without any issue. This is because phones in Singapore are not telco-locked. However, if your SIM is locked, below are the steps to unlock it:

Step 1. First, check whether your phone is indeed SIM locked. Insert a SIM card from another carrier (borrow from your friends or family) and restart the phone. If there is a signal and you can make outgoing calls, then your SIM is not locked. If not, proceed to step 2.

Step 2. Contact your carrier and request for an unlock. Repeat step 1 to check that your phone is indeed unlocked.

Staying More Than 8 Days In Japan?

klook travel sim

However, there are 15-day Klook SIM Cards available for pick up in Singapore ,  Bangkok ,  Malaysia , and  Indonesia .

You can also consider buying from  Mobal (16 days of unlimited data for USD55)  or  SIM Card Geek (16 days of 16GB data for USD50) , though these options are rather expensive compared to Klook.

klook travel sim

The SIM cards also came with a bunch of discount vouchers and brochures. However, these were all in Japanese and I didn’t really know how to use them.

I also like it that Klook allows a full refund anytime before I redeem my voucher. This gave me the option to buy another SIM card if I found a better one (which I didn’t manage to).

Update 21 May 2019: I recently found out that Changi Recommends sells the same Japan SIM card at just $21.90 , but it can only be collected at Changi Airport.

22 Comments and Questions

Hi, thanks for the article. I went to the site and want to buy 4g SIM card but can’t choose Haneda airport as pickup option. Only Narita airport. How did you do it?

Hi Kim, you’re welcome! When I bought the SIM card there was no option to select pickup location. I simply used the Klook voucher to collect at Haneda airport. I just tried to make a purchase a few minutes ago and I didn’t see any selection for pickup locations too. Therefore, once you receive the Klook voucher after making payment, you can just use it to collect at any of the indicated airports, including Haneda.

Hi, thanks for the information, it’s very useful! Did you have to deactivate the sim card or return it after the 8 days?

Hello Mavis, you’re welcome! No I didn’t have to, because I didn’t register any of my details in it.

Hi, Based on what you have written, I think you have done lots of research on data plans in Japan, I was wondering if you could advise me on this deal in comparison to wifi rental from Changi Recommends. Going to Hokkaido soon and doing my research for data. Thanks.

Hi Elizabeth, I believe you are referring to the Wifi router? The Changi Recommends router will provide slightly better connectivity in rural areas, and can be shared between a maximum of 5 devices. It provides unlimited data, and costs $5 day. It will be more value-for-money if you plan to share the cost among a group of people, but you guys will have to be near each other to use the Wifi.

I also found a Japan 8 Days Unlimited data SIM card from Changi Recommends which is cheaper than the Klook one. You can check it out here .

Hi does the unlimited data SIM card allow for sharing of hotspot? Thanks!

Hi Lene! I think it SHOULD be possible but it depends on the telco. Sorry I can’t give you a definite answer here. Kindly let me know if you find out!

I’m not sure if you can answer this question, but would I be able to get my SIM card and wait a few days before activating it myself?

Thanks for the helpful article!

Hi Rosie! Yes that is possible. The package comes with an instruction sheet teaching you how to activate the SIM card. I have updated the article to include this sheet, under the section “How to Activate SIM Card by Yourself”.

You said 4G speeds but what were your actual speeds?

The SIM Card provides actual 4G speeds, based on my own experience of 4G speeds in Singapore.

May I know, can I purchase the 4G sim card at Changi Airport collection point before I fly off to Japan?

Hi Leon, there is no Klook collection point in Changi Airport for this 4G SIM card. You can only collect at Narita or Haneda Airport in Tokyo. If you wish to collect in Singapore instead, you can check out this SIM card from Changi Recommends .

Hi, can someone confirm if hotspot/tethering can be used with that SIM card? Thanks!

Hi Leon, I did a quick search on the internet and I think most telcos do not prohibit tethering. Therefore you should be able to use hotspot with this telco’s (NTT Docomo) sim card.

Hi Evan, Got conflicting information from Klook but basically I think hotspot is prohibited with their SIM version.

Hi Leon, Ok noted, thanks very much for sharing. Kindly let me know if you find out whether it’s indeed prohibited or not.

Hi. I need to know if I activate the sim card in Tokyo and then have to switch it off to fly to Hokkaido. Can this card work if I switch off and then switch on my phone again?

Hi Jeff, yes it will still work.

Hi, is there an option to purchase a sim card for more than 8 days through Klook, as I can’t seem to find this option. As we are in Japan for more than 8 days (we will be there for 14 days), do we have to buy 2 for each traveller? For us, a family of 5, does that mean we purchase 10 sim cards? Thanks, Joy.

Hi Joy! Sorry for the late reply as I was checking directly with Klook on this issue.

Yes, there isn’t any SIM Card on Klook with a period of more than 8 days for pickup in Japan, and it is not possible to extend the usage period. However, there are 15-day SIM Cards available for pickup in Singapore , Bangkok , Malaysia , and Indonesia .

Yes, if you still choose to buy through Klook (Japan pickup), you will have to buy a total of 10 SIM cards.

You can also consider buying from Mobal (16 days of unlimited data for USD55) or SIM Card Geek (16 days of 16GB data for USD50) .

Hope this helps, Evan

What’s the best tourist SIM card for Japan (2024 guide)

By: Author Kris

Posted on Last updated: January 22, 2024

If you’re headed to Japan and want to stay connected while exploring, we’ve got you covered with the top tourist SIM cards. No need to worry about losing touch with your loved ones or missing out on those Insta-worthy moments.

We’ve spent a lot of time in Japan and traveled all over the country. The first trips we would very often come across a “Handy” phone in our hotel room – a phone we could use throughout our stay. But those days are long gone now.

Nowadays, if you want to stay connected, you better have a local SIM card if you don’t want to rely on public hotspots. And trust me, from experience, we can assure you that a local SIM card is still highly recommended.

There are several spots offering free internet, mainly in the larger cities, and handy apps to connect to WiFi hotspots for free. We share more information on this app in this article. Still, there are still plenty of places that require a data subscription for internet usage.

Whether you prefer the convenience of ordering physical SIMs online and picking them up at the airport or exploring the innovative world of eSIMs, there are numerous ways to ensure you stay connected on your journey.

Keep scrolling for the best options!

In a hurry? Our picks for the best Japanese SIM cards

Here are our top picks :

  • Mobal Data SIMs : These SIMs are great for data-hungry users. Mobal has unlimited data plans with a very reasonable fair usage policy. You don’t have to worry about data speed and can be online the whole day.
  • Mobal Voice + Data SIMs : If you need a Japanese Phone number to make voice calls or to use some specific Japanese apps.
  • Sakura Data SIMs : Sakura SIMs, ordered through Klook, are the price-conscious option. They are cheaper than Mobal but have a stricter fair usage policy.
  • Simcardgeek Esims : If your phone supports eSIMs this is the best and easiest way to go
  • Airalo eSIMs : The cost-conscious option in the eSIM department for those who don’t need huge data packages.

Japan Tourist SIM cards – The top choices

In this article, we discuss no less than 30 different Japan tourist SIM cards.  All of which have slightly different options.  It’s good to have a choice but with all these different options it is hard to see the forest for the trees.

We discuss all the details of the SIM cards further down in this article but here are our top choices:

For the occasional data user

Most SIM cards offer unlimited data but all providers have implemented a fair usage policy. If you consume more than what is covered by the fair usage policy your data speed will be reduced. Sakura Mobile cannot share the exact details of the fair usage policy, therefor we recommend them for occasional use. Their prices are very competitive but they cannot be used for video streaming or as a hot spot for your laptop.

If you just want to make sure that you can fall back on your data plan if you need it but you already know that you will only have to use it occasionally, these are your best options.

Short stays

At JPY ¥4,000 for 8 days the SIM cards provided by Sakura Mobile are reliable and very cheap.

The SIM card offers unlimited high-speed data at 4G or 3G speeds.  You will find a very detailed document to check if your mobile is compatible with the local network. Sakura Mobile uses the NTT Docomo network in Japan, generally seen as the best network in the country.

Thanks to the detailed information you can buy this SIM with peace of mind, knowing that it will work once you are there. If you’re still unsure you can pay a supplement for compatibility insurance. With this insurance, you will receive a WiFi device in case the SIM does not work in your phone.

Alternatively, if your phone is incompatible (see our FAQ below) with the NTT Docomo network you can opt for a Mobal SIM that works on both the NTT Docomo and the Softbank network.

Longer stays

If you are 2 of 3 weeks in japan.

For stays of 2 or 3 weeks , you’re in most cases also best off 16 or 21-day cards of Sakura Mobile that can be found on Klook.  At JPY ¥6,000 and JPY ¥6,500 they are the cheapest options that can be found for these durations.

Both SIMs offer unlimited high-speed data at 4G or 3G speeds.  4G is offered in major cities while the 3G is applicable in more rural areas. You will find a very detailed document to check if your mobile is compatible with the local network. Sakura Mobile uses the NTT Docomo network in Japan, generally seen as the best network in the country. It has a coverage of over 99%.

Once you have read through the detailed information you can buy this SIM with peace of mind, knowing that it will work once you are there.

If you’re still unsure you can pay a supplement for compatibility insurance. With this insurance, you will receive a WiFi device in case the SIM does not work in your phone.

Alternatively, if your phone is incompatible with the NTT Docomo network you can opt for a Mobal SIM that works on both the NTT Docomo and the Softbank network.

If you are longer than 24 days in Japan

If you will be in Japan longer than 24 days the 30-day card of Simcard GEEK that costs JPY ¥4,980 is a good buy.  The card comes with 7GB of high-speed data which should be sufficient to cover your needs.  This SIM card also connects to the NTT Docomo network which is generally recognized as Japan’s best network.

Simcard GEEK has a fair usage policy of 3GB/day.

Taking a picture on a snowy day in Japan

For the heavy data user

If you want to be online the whole day,  enjoy streaming music, or watch YouTube videos, you’re better off with the below SIM cards.  This may also be the case for those who will be sharing your data plan with friends or family members, maybe by means of a mobile WiFi device.

These SIMs also have a fair usage policy. In this case, however, you know the details of the policy and can therefore pay attention to it so that you are not faced with surprises.

Mobal offers SIM cards for 8 or 16 days with an unlimited data plan .  The cards have a fair usage policy which limits high-speed data to 3GB per day. 3GB is quite a lot, it will allow you to browse the internet for 36 hours, stream 600 songs, or watch 6 hours of standard definition video.

Consuming this amount of data in one day would probably mean that not much time is left to see the many stunning sights Japan has to offer.

Click here for more information and to order your Mobal SIM card: Mobal Tourist SIM

Mobal has a SIM with an unlimited data plan for 31 days.   This card has a fair usage policy which limits high-speed data to 3GB per day. 3GB is a lot, in the previous paragraph we gave a small overview of what exactly you can do before you reach this threshold.

If you go out and discover the city you will probably never consume that much data in one day and if you stay in your hotel you can use the WiFi provided by the hotel.

Sakura Mobile

Sakura Mobile is a reputable Japanese company that specializes in providing wireless services for visitors to Japan. They offer a range of affordable solutions to keep you connected throughout your stay.

They offer English support. Our support question was answered quickly, correctly, and in clearly understandable English.

One standout feature of Sakura Mobile is its compatibility insurance option. For an additional fee of 500 JPY, you can add this insurance to your purchase if you’re unsure whether their SIM will work with your device. This provides peace of mind and ensures that you’ll be able to stay connected without any hiccups.

In the unlikely event that you do encounter connectivity issues, Sakura Mobile offers a solution to those who took the insurance option – an upgrade to a Pocket Wi-Fi device at no extra cost. Alternatively, if you prefer, they can also provide a refund.

You have multiple options when it comes to ordering Sakura Mobile SIMs. You can either purchase them through Klook or directly on their corporate website . While the widest range of options is available on their own site, it’s worth noting that Klook offers certain exclusives not found on the corporate website.

On the other hand, when ordering directly, you can choose from more pick-up locations or have the SIM shipped to any address within Japan, including hotels.

Size : Multi-size SIM cards. Normal, Nano or Micro sim.

Network :  NTT Docomo (3G & 4G)

Shipping :  When you order through Klook the SIM can be collected at Terminal 3 (the International terminal) of Haneda International Airport or Terminal 1 and 2 of Narita International Airport. There is also a pick-up location in the arrival lobby of the Kansai airport.

If you order direct you can have the SIM delivered to hotels and Airbnb’s or collect it at the airport (Haneda, Narita, Kansai, Chubu, New Chitose) or at the office in Shinjuku.

Activation : No activation is required for these SIM cards. They’re ready to use. You just need to insert the SIM and set the APN.  You can download a document that explains how to do this.

Available direct :

Available through Klook :

Japan SIM cards with pick-up abroad (via Klook)

Here are a few extra options for those who live in Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam or India.

The below providers offer SIM cards that are either shipped to your home or that can be collected at your airport of departure.

Personally I would prefer to pick-up my SIM in Japan.  This has the advantage that somebody can assist you with setting it up and in the unlikely event that it doesn’t work, you would be able to look for an alternative or arrange a refund on the spot.

A pick-up abroad might, however, be a convenient option if you don’t want to lose time collecting your SIM upon arrival.

Yodobashi Akiba Store Japan

Buying a SIM card in Japan

Don’t worry if you’re already in Japan when you’re reading this.

It’s also possible to buy a tourist SIM card in BIC Camera and Yodobashi Camera stores as well as at Narita and Haneda airports.

You can even order one online and pick it up in several locations in downtown Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka as well as other cities.

At the airport

If you want to start using your SIM card immediately you can buy one at the airport.

In the arrivals hall are sales counters from various operators and they will certainly be able to assist you in English.

The drawback is that your choice will be more limited than in the shops in the city and you will be paying more, as is always the case at airports.

BIC camera also operates one small store in Narita and 2 in Haneda airport terminal 3 (see here and here ).  The sales points from the operators will likely be able to better assist you and give you advice while the stores from BIC camera will likely be cheaper.

klook travel sim

In the cities

Another option to buy a SIM card in Japan would be to head to one of the BIC Camera or Yodobashi Camera stores in the cities.

They sell various prepaid SIM cards for Japan tourists.  Usually, someone will be able to assist you in English but don’t expect the store personnel to speak the same level of English as they would at the airport.

If you know what you need they will be able to point you to the correct package or confirm that what you picked is what you think it is. But you better speak some Japanese if you want to go into lengthy discussions about what would be the best option for you.

Finding these stores is easy.  Your hotel should be able to tell you the nearest one or you can use Google Maps.

A visit to a BIC Camera or Yodobashi Camera store is something that we absolutely recommend.  It is a fun experience during which you can marvel at all the electronic gadgets that are for sale.

But maybe you prefer to compare the various options from the comfort of your hotel room.  This is possible as well.

You can order your SIM online with Mobal and pick it up directly at one of the many pick-up locations across Japan.

They have a very informative website and offer English support in case you have any additional questions.

Japan eSIMs

Good news if you have a modern phone that supports embedded SIMs (eSIMs). You no longer have to worry about fiddling with your phone to replace the SIM card. All you have to do is click a link or scan a QR code.

Your SIM can stay in your device and you can switch between your own cellular plan and the Japanese plan. Super convenient and super easy.

Four providers offer eSIMs :

Simcard GEEK

Airalo esims.

Airalo eSIMs are available for a duration of 7 or 30 days and come with a data package ranging between 1 GB and 10 GB.

These are data-only contracts so voice calls are not supported.

  • Size: eSIM card.
  • Network: Softbank
  • Duration: 7 or 30 days
  • Pick-up: You will find all the information in the e-mail or the app.
  • Activation: You can activate the eSIM when you want to start using it. You will need a WiFi connection to activate it.
  • Topping Up: You can buy a new SIM if you’ve consumed all data of your existing eSIM.

Use our exclusive   WAPITI10OFF promo code to get an additional 10% off your Airalo eSIM.

Check all Airalo eSIM options: Airalo eSIM

The activation link is sent minutes after your purchase so you can still buy this SIM after you’ve arrived in Japan.

Check out this list if you’re not sure if these eSIMs are compatible with your phone.

The eSIMs connect to Japan’s Docomo network and is native to Japan. It connects to the Docomo network directly and is fast & reliable. You don’t need to enable data roaming for it to work.

The SIMs are data only, voice & text is not supported.

These are the various options:

Click here for more information about the Simcard GEEK eSIM options: Simcard GEEK eSIMs

In addition to the regular SIMs that we discussed above , Mobal also offers a selection of eSIMs.

Their eSIMs make use of the Docomo network and are native to Japan. All the options are data only, voice & text is not supported.

The data speed is 4G LTE. If the included data amount is fully used you can continue surfing until the SIM expires but at a slower speed of 200 kbps.

Click here for more information about the Mobal eSIM options: Mobal eSIMs

Frewie offers 2 eSIMS for use in Japan. When ordering a Frewie eSIM through Klook you will get a confirmation mail with a QR code to activate your eSIM. The mail is sent within 24 hours of your purchase.

The Frewie eSIM is a data-roaming SIM that connects to the Docomo network in Japan. It’s not a native Docomo eSIM, you will need to activate data roaming for it to work. Because it uses roaming it can be somewhat slower than the above eSIM options from Simcard GEEK.

One SIM works only in Japan, the other works in Japan & South Korea. Both are data only. The data package varies with the duration of the SIM.

Japan SIM card for longer stays

For a short stay, you’re best off with a prepaid SIM card but if you’re staying in Japan for several months you could consider an unlimited long-term plan.

Japanese providers are known to have a lot of red tape.

A contract with them usually requires a lot of paperwork and a commitment of 2 years. For some, you even need to have a residence visa and/or a Japanese bank account.

Two providers offer long-term SIM plans :

Mobal offers an alternative to the red tape.

Their long-term plan comes with no minimum duration, no activation, and no termination fee.

The customer service team speaks English, is super-responsive, and you can easily order the SIM card online.

This is what you will get:

Japanese Phone number : A real Japanese phone number starting with 070, 080 or 090 (Softbank).  A voicemail service is included.

Free calls : All incoming calls and texts are free. Outgoing calls to other Softbank customers (including Mobal customers) are free from 1 AM to 9 PM.

Network : Your Mobal SIM will give you access to both the NTT Docomo network as well as the Softbank network so you’re sure to have the best reception whenever possible. The sim can be used in any unlocked device that supports the 3G or 4G Band 1 (2100MHz) frequency.

Shipping :  Shipping is always free but not available to all countries.  If shipping is not available to your country you can simply collect your sim for free, at one of the many pick-up locations.  There are locations at the airports and in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and other major cities across Japan.

Shipping of voice+text sims requires that a copy of your ID is sent to Mobal at the time of your order.

If you don’t want to share these details online you can pick up your package in Japan. All details about shipping and pick-up locations are extensively explained on the website .

Activation : To activate your SIM follow the activation instructions provided with your sim.  During business hours the activation should be processed within 2 hours.

Upgrade data plan : The data+voice SIM has 7GB of data at 4G speed per calendar month.  If you want more data at high speed you upgrade your plan in your online account.

Fair usage policy : If you use more than 7GB in one month your data speed will be reduced to 128kpbs for the remainder of the calendar month.

Click here for more information and to order your Mobal SIM card: MOBAL Long-term SIM

Sakura Mobile offers a similar long-term plan specifically aimed at overseas tourists who will spend a considerable time in Japan.

The plan has no minimum duration, it can be canceled at any time. There’s a one-time activation fee for the voice service. (only to be paid if you want to use the voice+text features)

To order the package you will need to provide a copy of your current passport. A utility bill with your address on it is also required as proof of residence if you want the SIM to be shipped to your home.

Japanese Phone number : A Japanese phone from NTT Docomo.

Calls : All incoming calls and texts are free. With the Sakura Dail app or the special prefix number you can call at special discounted rates. ( check the rates )

Network : NTT Docomo.  There’s a dedicated page to see if your device is compatible.

Shipping :  The SIM card can be shipped to your home address if you provide a proof of residence.  This is not required.  You can also collect it at the airport or in the Sakura Mobile office.

Normally it takes 2 to 5 days for the package to arrive. You will receive a tracking code with which you can track the shipment.

Activation : No activation is required for the data plan. A one-time fee of 5,500 JPY is required to activate the voice service.

Data plan : You can choose from 2 plans.  A lite plan with 4GB data/month or a premium plan with 25GB data/month.   Both plans are unlimited which means you can continue browsing at slower speeds if you’ve consumed the included data.  It’s also possible to top-up your data plan online.

Fair usage policy : Unknown

FAQ About Tourist SIM Cards for Japan

Will your phone work in japan .

Before you buy a SIM you need to be sure that your phone is compatible with Japan’s telecom network. It needs to be able to operate on one of the bands used by the telecom operators in Japan.

Check the technical specs of your phone to see what bands are supported and see if there’s a match with the bands that the operators are using. We’ve listed all of them in the following section.

Your phone will also need to be unlocked.

If you don’t want to do this manually you can find pages online ( like this page ) where you can select your phone and the network operator to verify if they’re compatible.

Network providers in Japan

Japan has four mobile phone companies that operate their own network.  The three major players are NTT Docomo, Softbank (formerly Vodafone), and Au by KDDI.

A fourth challenger is Rakuten Mobile. Rakuten Mobile used to be a virtual operator but started building out its own network a few years ago. Today it covers about 94% of the population.

All other operators are virtual and use one of the existing networks. The tourist SIM cards we discussed in this article all work on either the Softbank or NTT Docomo network.

The network of NTT Docomo is recognized to be the best in terms of coverage.  Softbank comes in second although they are not far behind. Both these networks cover 99% of Japan (population-based).

These are the bands used by the Japanese operators:

Rakuten Mobile

Mobile WiFi device

Pocket WiFi device vs Tourist SIM card

One big perk of using a pocket WiFi device is that you can stay connected without having to mess with your phone.

No need to worry about changing your settings. Just remember to turn off your data connection to avoid those annoying roaming fees. With your SIM card still in the phone, you can stay connected with friends, family, work buddies, and anyone else who has your number just like you’re back at home.

If you want people to be able to contact you anytime, a pocket WiFi device is a great option.

Another advantage of pocket WiFi devices is that they let you connect multiple users at once (usually up to 10!).

Batteries of pocket WiFi devices usually last no more than a day. This is probably the biggest disadvantage. It is one more device that you need to charge on a daily basis.

Interested in Pocket WiFi devices?

See which ones you can rent in Japan . Or if you are going to use this often, you can buy your own device , just like us.

Which size of SIM card do you need

SIM cards have become increasingly smaller over the years. First, we had the standard SIM, then the Micro SIM and nowadays almost all modern phones use a Nano-SIM

Usually, providers use multi-size (3-in-1) SIM cards that are compatible with all phones.  Others only offer 2-in-1 (Micro and Nano) which means they will still be compatible with most current models.

The technical specs of your phone will show what SIM you need.

In some cases, you will need to specify the requested SIM size with your order.

Japan JR Central Free WiFi

Free WiFi in Japan

You can easily find free WiFi at many places in Japan. Coffee shops like Starbucks, metro stations in all major cities, and JR train stations offer this convenient service.

Connecting to public WiFi networks was a pain the first time we were in Japan. Not only did we, have to do it over and over again. We also couldn’t get the connection to work for half of the time.

But now there’s a great app called Japan WiFi Auto-Connect that takes care of all the hassle for you. It automatically connects your phone to selected public WiFi hotspots. Only the trusted ones managed by reliable companies or authorities are used by the app for security reasons.

The app worked perfectly for 90% of the time during our last trips. Whenever we walked into a metro station or train station the phone usually connected to the WiFi in a matter of minutes.

The Japan WiFi Auto-Connect app is available for Android and Apple and makes free WiFi much more reliable for foreigners.

Still, I suggest not depending on free WiFi entirely, just like we don’t. As you move away from the big cities, finding reliable Wi-Fi spots becomes harder.

And even in the major cities, I find it super handy to have internet access all the time so I can look up stuff whenever something pops into my head – not just when I stumble upon a hotspot.

It’s a matter of convenience, but SIM cards are so cheap that I think it’s worth it.

Having a Japanese tourist SIM card turned out to be priceless.  With Google Maps we could easily find our way around the cities, we discovered interesting places to eat and we weren’t restricted to touristic restaurants since we could use our mobile phone to translate the menus.

It really helped us to travel deeper and get a better, less touristy experience of Japan.

There’re many different tourist SIM cards so we wrote this post to help you choose the one that suits your needs.  All information is accurate at the time of writing.

We will regularly update this article but if you notice any changes we would appreciate it if you let us know so we can update our post.

Enjoy Japan!

Klook’s dtac Happy Tourist Super 4G 8 Day Unlimited Data SIM Card: Convenient 24 Hours Pick Up at Bangkok Don Mueang DMK Airport Klook Counter

klook travel sim

Arriving from my flight and exiting immigration and customs at Bangkok Don Mueang Airport past midnight, I opted to get my Thailand SIM Card from  Klook this time as they offer a 24-hour pick-up service at Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK). It costed just S$5.50 (~THB 150) for the DTAC Happy Tourist Super 4G 8 Day SIM Card , which offers unlimited data usage, and is about half the recommended retail price of THB 299.

I passed my phone to the staff to redeem my  Klook voucher (screenshot-ed the voucher on the  Klook app before departing from Singapore as I have no internet in DMK yet), and they helped me to insert and activate my  dtac Happy Tourist Super 4G 8 Day SIM Card on my phone.

Most of the time, it’s just a simple plug-and-play process, but in case there are issues following the activation, here are the  APN Settings for dtac :

  • Name: dtac internet
  • APN: http://www.dtac.co.th
  • Username: not set
  • Password: not set
  • APN type: Default

You probably won’t need this information as the  Klook staff will fix up the internet before returning the phone to you.

Here’s a recap of the SIM Card details:

DMK Don Muang Airport (Klook Pick Up Spot) Package Details Inclusive Of:

  • dtac Happy Tourist Super 4G 8 Day SIM Card (available in Standard, Micro or Nano size)
  • Maximum 4G speed of up to 3GB usage
  • Speed drops to 384 kbps (3G speed) after using up 3GB (unlimited data usage)
  • Prepaid THB100 call credits (equivalent to approximately 30 minutes of talk time)
  • 4G/3G speeds will depend on the coverage area

As you can see, it’s pretty much the exact same thing as the 299 Baht dtac Happy Tourist SIM , so you should just get your Thailand SIM Card off Klook instead at literally half the price.

Looks like the Klook Sim Card for unlimited data 8 days is priced at $20USD, which is a lot cheaper than the other data sim cards I see online.

Why is it so much cheaper? Is the service as good as other sims for tourists? Thanks!

' class=

Maybe because of this:

"Speed throttled to 200Kbps beyond data allowance"

https://pretraveller.com/best-prepaid-data-sim-card-in-japan-for-tourists/

That would make it painfully slow.

klook travel sim

Be aware if they claim to have unlimited data. I've only ever had one experience where the "unlimited data" had fast internet. Whenever they market themselves with unlimited data, the internet is usually slow and unstable.

@Tim S, what was that ONE experience?

The card only has fixed amount of 3G/4G data, according to the website it is 30GB, after that will throttled down to 2G speed. I believe this is standard practice for all carriers to ensure no one abuse the WAN network. The price is good but I have seen other 7GB/7days SIM on Docomo network under USD $20 so Klook SIM is probably legit.

Yes they do offer Pocket Data WiFi that are also cheap as compared to the others

klook travel sim

For comparison, there is also this SIM card with unlimited data.

https://www.japan-rail-pass.com/services/simcard

It says no daily data cap. It links to an IIJmio page, suggesting it is through them (which uses the NTT Docomo network). I haven't used it before and can't verify the speed, though they claim no restriction on their side. If anyone has any experience, please do share it.

I also found this Sim with unlimited data... anyone have use it before? Interested in their short term unlimited data SIM.

It’s a scam. Don’t buy it.

How To Buy The Best Malaysia Tourist Sim Card 2021

How To Buy The Best Malaysia Tourist Sim Card 2024

Thankfully, getting a travel sim card Malaysia is very easy. You just need ID and some ringgit (and sometimes not even the latter if you purchase from home!). I describe the best (and easiest ways) to get a traveller sim Malaysia below.

But first, a bit of background information.

Best Travel Sim Malaysia

Mobile and data overage is generally very good in Malaysia on any prepaid sim card Malaysia plan. We never had a problem.

I always like having a Malaysia data sim card for tourist so I know I always have maps, Google and internet access for work and email. In fact, my sim card data access is often better than hotel wifi! It’s also important to have one of the Malaysian sim cards if you’re travelling Malaysia solo so that you have a way to contact people.

Also, these days I find many of my travel bookings are on my phone, like bus tickets and entry tickets, and I need to be able to access them without problems.

You will always need ID when picking up or purchasing a Malaysia travel sim card as it’s legally required. Your passport is perfect for this.

I highly recommend you get a prepaid plan. These require minimal effort and are very good value. As a tourist, they are also basically your only choice.

You can, of course, use your sim card from home if you have a phone carrier that allows this or from a neighbouring country. However, this is likely to be much much much more expensive than buying a Malaysia prepaid sim card for tourist. It’s such an easy process to buy a prepaid sim that this is what I recommend rather than using international roaming.

You can buy a prepaid sim card in Malaysia as soon as you arrive in most international airports to make it extra easy or use a service on Klook to pick up your sim card on arrival which makes it even easier.

Otherwise, many shopping malls and bus stations have a chance to purchase the best tourist sim card Malaysia as well. I promise that you won’t find it hard to find somewhere to buy one!

If you are very particular about what service you get and exactly what it covers, then I recommend purchasing from the company direct (often they will have kiosks at arrival airports) so you can ask any questions. Otherwise, you can buy them from whoever.

If you need more data or talk credit for your sim card prepaid, it’s also very easy to purchase top ups from many places or online. Usually, you can do this at any 7-Eleven or one of hundreds of other places. You can ask when picking up your sim card about where to add credit to your Malaysia prepaid card.

As an alternative, you can also get an eSim before you leave home that will give you peace of mind that you will have data for your whole trip (including surrounding countries) and you’re all set to go.

Airalo is especially handy for this.

When choosing the best sim card in Malaysia for you, take a minute to think about your needs – do you plan on making local calls and sending local texts, or do you really just want to use the internet/data?

Most people you need to deal with in Malaysia (like tour operators and taxi drivers) will have whatsapp which makes a Malaysian sim card with some call credit included unnecessary, but it can still come in handy. You can get around this by using a service like Skype so you can ring local numbers even if your phone plan just has data.

Option 1: Purchase The Best Sim Card For Tourist In Malaysia Before Leaving Home!

Your first choice for buying a Malaysia sim card tourist pack is to purchase your sim card online before leaving home. This has the benefit of making it very easy to pick-up your prepaid sim on arrival so you are all set to go.

Even better, if your phone allows you to have an eSim, like most iPhones and many others, you can buy and activate your sim card without even needing to talk to anyone.

This is the cheapest and easiest option for getting a travel internet sim card.

This is especially beneficial if you want to make sure you have a sim card to go as soon as you arrive and want things as easy as possible. It works best for people who want data more than a sim card to make calls.

There are plenty of Malaysia sim card airport options, with many of the major airports in Malaysia offering card pick-up. It’s easiest in Kuala Lumpur at terminal 2, but there are other options too.

I personally recommend buying an eSim as the best option if your phone handles eSim for ultra ease.

You can do this via the following links. These sim cards are for Malaysia only.

  • Kuala Lumpur airport Tune Talk (KLIA2 only)
  • Kuala Lumpur airport Celecom (KLIA2 only)
  • Kuala Lumpur airport Digi (KLIA2 only)
  • eSim (up to 5GB)
  • eSim (unlimited data)
  • Airalo eSim, perfect for multiple countries and super easy set up.

If you click on the links above, you will get the latest deals as well as photos and instructions so you can be completely clear on where to pick it up in the case of the first two physical sim cards. For the eSims, you’ll get an email with an activation code so you can get started.

It is very easy to buy sim card online Malaysia using this method.

All of these choices of sim card in Malaysia for tourist are great value with good coverage.

There are usually two options for each provider and you can pick the best one for you depending on how long you are in Malaysia and how much data you need.

At the time of writing this guide, the price starts at RM23, so as you can see the Malaysia sim card price is very reasonable.

You can buy one right now for a great price on Klook by clicking here.

Comparison Of Malaysia Tourist Sim Card Options

The following table gives you all the options for pre-purcashing a Malaysia sim card for tourist. Simply click on the option that best suits you, buy and follow the instructions to pick it up. It’s really easy to buy Malaysia sim card online and saves the hassle of trying to work things out on arrival after a long flight!

All providers have similar coverage and are good choices. Note that the Digi and Celecom options are currently only available in KLIA2, so only buy this option if you are flying into there (usually just AirAsia and other budget options). Tune Talk is available at both Kuala Lumpur International Airport terminals though as well as Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

These options are only for people who hold a foreign (so not Malaysian) passport. The sim card price Malaysia will depend on how much data and minutes you have included as well as how long the Sim card is valid for. For the plans mentioned below, click on the provider links and you’ll find additional options if you need a sim card for longer.

* 5GB at high speeds, 10GB at 64 kbps  ** 10GB at high speeds, 10GB at 64 kbps  *** Up to 20GB at 3Mbps then 512 kbps  **** Up to 60GB at 6Mbps then 512 kbps ***** 15GB at high speeds, unlimited at 128 kbps ****** 500MB a day at high speeds then unlimited at 384 kbps ******* This is the starting price. There are many options

Note: The above table is correct at time of publishing and should give you an indication of the best prepaid plan Malaysia prices. However, things do change so double check the price and allowances before purchase. Also check that the collection point is open at your arrival time.

Option 2: Buy A Digi Travel Sim Card Malaysia On Arrival

Another way to buy a Digi sim card Malaysia is in person once you arrive in Malaysia. It’s also very easy to buy a sim card when you get there – it just takes longer and usually costs more.

Digi is the third largest sim provider in Malaysia and our personal favourite. We are big fans of a Digi traveller sim card.

They offer great plans and prices for their Malaysia travel sim options, they are easy to buy and top up and have great coverage and data speed. Their Malaysia sim card rates are some of the best around.

All sim sizes are available.

Note that they do offer multiple plans which can be confusing especially as you need to make sure you buy the right one when you first sign up or you can end up wasting money by swapping plans.

And it is cheaper to pre-buy your sim card here for Kuala Lumpur .

So think about how long you want the sim card to work for, how much data you want and whether calls are important too. The good part is that top ups are very cheap so it will all work out if you make a mistake.

Picking up a Digi sim card for tourist is very easy on arrival in the country with kiosks in many major airports. We usually fly into KLIA2 and you can find Digi as soon as you exit customs. Just walk straight ahead on the left side of the exit. Look for a big yellow sign!

digi malaysia tourist at KLIA2

At KLIA, you can find some sim providers just before you hit the baggage claim. See photo below.

Sim card providers as you walk to baggage claim at KLIA

At KLIA, you can find Digi, Tune Talk and some other providers just to the left as you exit customs. The following video shows you where. Note that this was taken before the pandemic. If you have been to KLIA recently, it would be great to find out if it’s still in the same spot.

If you’re looking for the best prepaid plan Malaysia offers for tourist sims, the current Digi prepaid sim plans are…

Option 3: Buy A Regional Sim Card Before You Leave

Travelling to other countries in the region during your trip?

A sim card that works in these countries too can be the best way to go. They cost a little more but will make life easier.

There are two options you can easily buy online before you go. One is an eSim (so make sure your phone works with this before purchase). This is ultra easy as you can set it up without having to visit a physical collection point. It works in basically all of SE asia.

There is also an eSim which is just for Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The table below shows the price for 7 days, but they also have prices for 5 and 10 days here .

Finally, there is an eSim you can buy from Airalo that basically works everywhere. I bought one for my recent trip and was able to use it in Malaysia, Thailand, Armenia, Georgia, Israel, Dubai and Cyprus! Everywhere I went on the trip.

There is also a physical sim which works in 11 countries which includes most of SE Asia, Macau, Hong Kong and Australia. You can collect this from KLIA2.

Here are your options. They are both data only.

* Up to 15GB at high speeds then 128 kbps  ** Up to 20GB at high speeds then 128 kbps *** Up to 20GB at high speeds then 384 kbps

Option 4: Have A Sim Card Delivered Before You Leave

If you like the idea of already having your sim card set to go before you leave home but want a physical sim, there are options to buy one and have it delivered to your home before you go.

You can find options for the following countries below:

Hi, I will be traveling I. Malaysia for 6 weeks (42 days), which SIM card would you recommend I buy?

Also, should I purchase the SIM card online or at he airport?

I will be flying in the KLIA main terminal.

Kind regards.

Hi Jacob! Any of the options in this article will work for you. You can easily extend the duration and buy more credit once you are there. When you are picking up the card (if you buy online) or buying the card, you can ask them how you can do that but usually it’s as simple as going in a 7/11. You can buy before or on arrival. Before makes it slightly easier and quicker when you are there.

Hi Josh, your article is helping me a lot! Can I buy Digi LIVE sim card at the airport? I really don’t need that much data anyway. And just in any case I need to top up, how much is the minimum amount? Many thanks in advance!

Hi Martina! The people at Digi can help you set up your sim card with whatever plan you like. I’m not sure about minimum top up amount. It would be low though like RM5.
