Hiking Tours in The Dolomites

Hikes in the dolomites.

  • Complete the iconic Alta Via 1, the 'High Route' in the Italian Dolomites
  • Indulge in warm Kaiserschmarrn pancakes after a day in the cool mountain air
  • Classic hikes on paths through flower-filled meadows and shady forests
  • An aromatic glass of Traminer wine while watching the sunset over the Italian Alps
  • Hear the call of marmots as you gaze over the distant rocky peaks

The Dolomites are an incredibly distinctive and intensely beautiful mountain range spanning across the border of northeastern Italy and Austria. Massive jagged spires of dolomite rock, textured limestone peaks, and verdant alpine pastures dominate the horizon.  Nestled beneath the imposing mountaintops, you’ll find fairy-tale villages lined with colorful flower boxes and wood-timbered mountain chalets. Hiking the extensive network of trails in Italy’s Dolomite Mountains is visually stunning and physically exhilarating. The Alta Via 1 , our most popular trek, is a classic route where you venture into the heart of the Dolomites and stay at traditional mountain refugios . To see a different side of the Italian Alps, journey from the limestone peaks of the Brenta Dolomites to the shimmering shores of Lake Garda on our Dolomites to Lake Garda trip. If you prefer the flexibility of choosing which rewarding hike you do each day while staying at one family-run hotel, you’ll love our center-based hiking trip in the Alta Badia region.

  • Casunziei pasta:  A hand-made, stuffed pasta that has the shape of a half-moon. While there are several versions of the recipe, the traditional way of preparing the local dish is with a beetroot filling.
  • Speck: A traditional dried prosciutto ham from the Dolomites that is lightly smoked and cured to perfection. Often found on a charcuterie board paired with a variety of local cheeses.
  • Kaiserschmarrn: A South Tyrolean specialty, the ultimate treat after a day in the outdoors. Perfect bite-sized pieces sprinkled with powdered sugar and served warm with a sweet jam.
  • Grappa: A distilled spirit that’s uniquely Italian. The flavor is warm, aromatic, and strong, typically enjoyed after a meal. The drink is made from the remains of grapes that are left over after winemaking (the stems, seeds, and skin of grapes).

Dolomites: Food & Traditions

  • The Alta Via 1 | A world-class trek along the iconic Italian ‘High Route’ through the best of the Dolomites – the ultimate adventure. Ideal for experienced hikers looking for a challenging but rewarding trip. Stay in wonderfully remote yet incredibly charming  ‘refugios’ (mountain huts) for a great sense of comradery.
  • Walking in the Heart of the Dolomites | The best itinerary for those who would like to have just one base for their hiking holiday. If you are a keen hiker who loves the mountains and wants to experience the Dolomites without compromising on comfort, then this is the tour for you!
  • The Dolomites to Lake Garda | This trip perfectly blends the classic combination of mountains and lakes with a wonderful variety of authentic regional accommodation. Challenging hikes in the Dolomites lead to easy lakeside strolls around Garda, the perfect spot to wind down.

Which Itinerary is for me?

The Dolomites is the name for the mountain range spanning across northeast Italy along the border with Austria. The easiest way to reach its incredible limestone peaks is by flying into the iconic city of Venice.

There are two airports in Venice – Venice Treviso (airport code: TSF) and Marco Polo (airport code: VCE), the latter being the more convenient option when traveling from overseas.

The official start of the Alta Via is Cortina, in the heart of the Dolomites. We are happy to arrange private taxi transfers from Venice airports, or you can travel by public bus from Marco Polo Airport or Venice Mestre Bus Station to Cortina on the 'Cortina Express' (duration: 2h30m).

How do I reach the start of the Alta Via 1?

This video takes you on a brief tour of what you can expect when embarking on a walking vacation in the Dolomites.

Discover the marvels of hiking in the Dolomites with this high-speed 1-minute glimpse of the Alta Via 1.

WELCOME TO SOUTH TYROL

Meet your tour host and group in the capital of South Tyrol, Bolzano for the first day of our fun adventure. We head straight to a traditional South Tyrolean lunch at a restaurant dating back to 1277. Get to know your new friends over a wonderful feast as you enjoy your first taste of South Tyrol’s traditional culinary culture.

This afternoon we meet up with a local guide and explore the charming streets of Bolzano together. Enjoy the unusual and pretty architecture, and take in the local  culture with both Austrian and Italian influences as our guide shares tales of the city.

Later, we transfer to nearby Merano. Soak up the gorgeous mountain views and see how many castles you can spot on the drive. We check-in to our gorgeous historic hotel where you have time to relax and use the indoor pool and spa facilities before we meet for an apericena at the hotel and toast a perfect first day.

DISCOVER MERANO

After a nourishing breakfast, get your sneakers on because we are off to explore Dorf Tirol and take a beautiful walk to Merano. Enjoy the mix of Alpine and Mediterranean vegetation all set across an incredible panoramic mountainous backdrop. The views are magnificent.

Invigorated after our walk, next it’s off to lunch at a favorite country inn. Our restaurant is perched high above Merano which means there are incredible views to soak in over platters of local speck and mountain cheeses. All washed down with an icy beer or glass of wine.

This afternoon, you have some free time to explore Merano’s Medieval old town or unwind and relax at the city’s famous thermal baths. Enjoy the therapeutic pools and alpine wellness amenities or book in for an optional massage.

We have a special dinner in-store this evening at a classic Tyrolean restaurant. Here we enjoy both Mediterranean and Tyrolean dishes and, of course, delicious homemade desserts – many featuring apples from the orchards surrounding Merano.

  • ACTIVITIES: Dorf Tirol, Tappeiner promenade walk, Thermal baths visit
  • MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch with wine / beer, Dinner with wine / beer

Orchards AND WINE TRAILs

South Tyrol truly seems like it’s straight out of a fairytale and today we show you why. This morning starts with a gorgeous walk through vineyards, orchards, and forests overlooked by charming chapels and castles. Breathe in the fresh mountain air, and let it sink in that you’re really here.

This region makes some of Italy’s best white wines, so of course we have to try them. We venture to one of our favorite local wineries for a tasting and light lunch where you’ll learn about the organic and sustainable practices the winemakers are passionate about.

We have some time to relax back at the hotel before departing for a local restaurant for dinner. Make sure to take advantage of the indoor and outdoor pools and wellness center at our gorgeous hotel.

  • ACTIVITIES: Guided Algunder Waalweg walk, Wine tasting
  • MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch with wine, Dinner with wine

trautmannsdorf castle south tyrol

CASTLES AND VINEYARDS

Say goodbye to Merano this morning as we’re bound for the Dolomites! En route, we stop at the extraordinary garden grounds of a castle for a guided tour. Soak up stunning views above Merano and surrounding mountain ranges and explore more than 80 different garden landscapes.

As we cruise along the oldest wine road in Italy, it only makes sense to make a detour and try a drop. Sit down to a wine tasting over a light lunch and reflect on the day’s adventures with your group. Perhaps you’ll fall for deep red Lagrein today? With aromas of wild berries, cocoa, violets and spices, we think we’ll have a few fans.

Totally relaxed from our time in spa town Merano, our next adventure takes us to a dramatic change of scenery. Nestled in the Val Gardena, our next base for the tour is Ortisei – a charming alpine town found at the foothills of the incredible Dolomite mountains.

Before dinner you have time to relax at the hotel or make use of their wellness facilities – a spa or massage is always a good idea. Tonight we are off for an extra special dinner by candlelight.

  • ACTIVITIES: Trauttmansdorff Castle visit, Wine tasting
  • ACCOMMODATION: Boutique alpine chalet hotel

alpe di siusi alpine paths

EXPLORE ALPE DI SIUSI

Today’s the day you’ve been dreaming of – we are hiking in the Dolomites! Don your best walking shoes and embark on a casual guided hike on the Alpe di Siusi. We visit authentic mountain huts along the way and have plenty of time for photo stops.

All that walking calls for a feast, so there’s no better time to head to a local alpine cheese farm. We tour the farm before donning an apron for a local cooking class where we learn about edible flowers and the best mountain herbs before sitting down to enjoy our creations.

As we make our way back to Ortisei, prepare to travel in style. Snuggle into your horse drawn carriage as we trot across the alpine pathways and enjoy the stunning views.

This afternoon we head into town and wander the quaint cobblestone streets dotted with wooden chalets, and discover its centuries-old woodcarving tradition at a local artisan’s studio.

Relax back at our hotel before we head out into a local restaurant in town together. Nibble on the region’s favorite cured meat ‘speck’ or why not try some ragu made with deer.

  • ACTIVITIES: Guided hike, Cooking class, Cheese farm, carriage ride and Artisan visit

dolomites almabtrieb festival

DOLOMITES PEAKS AND Almabtrieb Festival

Are you ready for an unforgettable day? We depart early for one of the famous Dolomites viewpoints (weather permitting of course). Boasting dramatic limestone peaks surrounded by fields and mountain trails, it’s one of the most spectacular sights in the Dolomites.

Awed beyond belief, it’s onwards to a nearby village to experience an incredible local festival. The whole town gets into the spirit to celebrate the ancient practice of bringing cows and sheep down from the mountain pastures in the Fall. This ritual, laden with generations of wisdom, reflects the deep connection between the land, its people, and their animals.

The entire village gets into the spirit with a parade, cows decorated with bells and flowers, local food stands and of course everyone is decked out in traditional costume.

After a spectacular day in the Dolomites, head back to our hotel in Ortisei where you have time for a swim, massage, long hot shower, or simply time to read a book. We have a casual dinner at the hotel this evening.

  • ACTIVITIES: Dolomites peak viewpoint, Local festival

lago di braies dolomites

LAGO DI BRAIES AND A LOCAL FEAST

Today we visit perhaps the most photographed place in the Dolomites – the famous Lago di Braies. We set out early to make the most of this incredible natural lake known for its clear, turquoise waters that mirror the surrounding snow-capped peaks.

Enjoy some free time here to walk the circuit trail around the lake, rent a vintage rowboat or simply relax on the shoreside and enjoy the views.

Lunch is at a gorgeous local bistrot where you can continue to admire the view of the Lago di Braies as we nibble on tasty panini and cake with a glass of wine in hand.

In the afternoon, we make a stop at a historic monastery and the home of one of the world’s oldest operating wineries. Enjoy a private guided tour of the Abbey before we sample some of their wines.

There is something very special in store for our final dinner. Together we sit down to enjoy a traditional Törggelen feast in celebration of the harvest’s new wine and our new friendships. Held in a rural tavern, we sit at a communal dining table and munch on roasted chestnuts, dumplings, sausages, and plenty of wine.

  • Activities: Lago di Braies visit, Monastery visit with wine tasting and Törggelen feast
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch with wine, Dinner with wine
  • Accommodation: Boutique alpine chalet hotel

dolomites tour castle

A fairytale castle & fond farewells

With hearts full, pack your bags and bid farewell to our mountain home this morning after a leisurely breakfast. Our final day is upon us but not without one last adventure.

As we make our way back to Bolzano, we stop for a guided tour at a fairytale castle built around 1130. Gaze out over the sweeping views over the entire Adige Valley, Bolzano and idyllic vineyards.

One of the most famous residences and most important fortifications in South Tyrol, we enjoy a guided tour of the castle and its unique Romanesque chapel. Inside the chapel, we discover incredible 13th century frescoes depicting hunting scenes and our favorite – the famous ‘dumpling’ eater.

All good things must come to an end, but not before a final meal together. We head to the castle’s Medieval tavern after our tour and share some of the region’s most delicious dishes together from canederli to cotoletta and of course one last slice of apple strudel.

Finally, we make the journey back to Bolzano where our tour wraps up. Leave dreaming of South Tyrol and the Dolomites for many years to come.

Italy is full of beauty, there’s no question about that. However, the Dolomites or “Dolomiti” is truly one of the most breathtaking places in the entire world.

While Venice is certainly enchanting, the dolomites are a wonderful contrast and equally as fascinating! You’ll also meet your guide at the Piazzale Roma, which you can access by water taxi. Hop into your comfortable minivan and set off for the Dolomites.

Not to worry – Venice’s stunning architecture will be there waiting when you get back in the evening.

The vans are so comfortable that it’s hard not to fall asleep along the way, but you’d be missing out on gorgeous views and interesting commentary from your guide! Your first stop is the ski resort town of Cortina, boasting over 140 ski runs.

You’ll have plenty of time to stroll around at your leisure and take some photos of the town that will be home to the winter Olympic games in 2026.

From here, you can take a breezy stroll or sit at the rifugio and enjoy the phenomenal views of the legendary Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

It’s certainly no wonder why Cortina is called the “pearl of the Dolomites”, with its unique landscapes and intricate architecture. You and your group will then make your way to Lago di Misurina, where you can walk around the glass-like lake.

Reflecting the towering Alps off of its surface, the lake exudes radiance and makes for a serene location that really lets you clear your head and enjoy the moment. There are some wonderful cafes nearby, so feel free to grab one while taking it all in.

It’s almost like having one of your local best friends show you around all the hidden gems of this magical place on Earth!

Just like the other tours we’ve covered so far, this one also clocks in at 9 hours. You’ll meet your guide outside a café called “Re Mida” which is right in front of the water bus stop of line 2. You’ll then board your Mercedes minivan for the day, which is always a smooth and comfortable ride.

As you drive around the wonderful scenery, through tunnels and around canyons, your guide will offer an educational commentary about the area. They’ll share their own personal anecdotes and fun stories, which make the drive even more entertaining.

Then, you’ll arrive at the cosmopolitan Cortina, which is known around the world for its incredible beauty and world-class skiing.

Due to the small group size, you will get a say in how you spend your tour. Perhaps you’re looking to sit back and relax while taking in the views of the Dolomites. Maybe you’d prefer to get out and walk around, or start trekking up to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Whatever the case may be, the guides are very well-versed in the options available and are always willing to offer recommendations and accommodate you as best as they can.

4. Best Combination Tour: A Day Among The Most Beautiful Mountains in The World, the Dolomites and Lake Braies

Next, is one of the most comprehensive, well-planned tours we’ve come across. With this tour, you’ll spend A Day Among the Most Beautiful Mountains in the World, the Dolomites, and Lake Braies .

Lasting anywhere from 6 to 9 hours, you’ll get to see all the nooks and crannies of this beautiful location and learn all about it. With a small group size, you’ll receive more personalized attention and be able to ask any questions you may have.

Not only that, but you get more of a say in what you’d like to do, focusing on the parts that interest you the most. Meet your guide in front of the green cab taxi service at 8:00 am in Venice, and you’ll board a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle.

The vehicles are nice and spacious, and even come with wi-fi on board so you can share your experience with others in real-time. Alternatively, enjoy the wonderful views as you head to the Belluno province.

The first stop of the day is the infamous Cortina d’Ampezzo, known for its incomparable natural beauty and top-class ski resorts.

At Lago di Misurina, you’ll have time to take a leisurely stroll around the picturesque lake, reflecting the surrounding Alps off the surface. Alternatively, if you feel like resting your legs, you can stop by a nearby café or bar and enjoy the nice picture window view of the landscape.

Then, it’s time to get close to Tre Cime di Lavaredo, which may be one of the most impressive locations in all of Europe.

If you’d like to keep the fun going, you can choose to add on a trip to Lago di Braies where you can walk around, explore, or sit in one of the many lakeside cafes with phenomenal vistas.

5. Best Private Tour: Dolomites Day Trip from Venice by Mercedes Van

  • Departure:  Garage San Marco, Piazzale Roma, 467, 30135 Venezia VE
  • Includes:  Professional guide, private transportation

Say you really want to go all out on your tour and experience the Dolomites in the most luxurious way. If that sounds interesting to you, then look no further, because this is the tour for you!

The Private Dolomites Day Trip from Venice by Mercedes Van offers you an exclusive experience with a guide there to answer any questions you may have without the addition of other parties in your group.

Your tour will start at 8:00 am where you’ll hop onboard a luxurious Mercedes vehicle. These are usually Vianos, but it may vary depending on availability. However, comfort and a smooth ride is always guaranteed and you do get to customize your trip to fit you and your group’s interests.

Of course, you do have the ability to change up the activities and stops you take, but you’ll generally follow this course. The first stop, is Cortina which is highly recommended by just about anyone who’s ever visited this gorgeous place.

While it is known for world-class skiing, it’s stunning at any time of year and really draws quite the tourism in the summertime.

After this, you guys can all take a nice walk around Lago di Misurina and breathe in that clean mountain air. This is a favorite for families, so if you would like to bring children along, we’d say go for it. After this, you can choose to head to Lago di Dobbiaco and/or Lago di Braies.

While both lakes a certainly impressive, Lago di Braies is probably more impressive. However, there are more crowds, so it’s really up to your preferences. Its mirror-like emerald waters are simply magical and it’s probably worth navigating the extra people to get a glimpse of it and walk around.

Guide to Dolomites Day Trips From Venice

Can you do a day trip to the dolomites from venice.

Once you have done all the touristy things in Venice like a gondola ride, it’s time for something different. While it may seem far away, a day trip to the Dolomites from Venice is totally doable.

The Dolomites are a 2-3 hour drive from Venice. You should try and get on the road no later than 7am. My favorite place in the Dolomites is the town of Cortina d’Ampezzo . The town is set in a valley surrounded by towering peaks and I can’t think of a better place to spend a day.

You should take the cable car to the top of the mountain, from the top you will have panoramic views of the surrounding valley. Better yet, hike one of the many trails that criss-cross the area.

Another great option is to visit the Tre Cime di Lavaredo , a trio of towering peaks that are one of the most iconic sights in the Dolomites. The drive up to the base of the peaks is very scenic, here you can hike around, the views are amazing.

Make sure you stop in one of the mountain huts for some polenta, speck (smoked ham) and cheese. After a full day of exploring it’s time to head back to Venice. I know it’s tempting to stay longer, you have to keep in mind that the roads in the Dolomites are steep and winding, so I would recommend you drive back during daylight hours.

What is the Best Way to do a Dolomites Day Trip From Venice?

  • Take a tour : I would recommend taking a tour to see the Dolomites. You can relax as the guides will take care of all the logistics. Plus, you’ll have the benefit of a local expert to show you the best sights and share their knowledge of the area. We suggest the Dolomite Mountains and Cortina Semi Private Day Trip from Venice as the best all around tour.
  • Rent a car : If you like to explore on your own, renting a car is the way to go. With you own transportation you the freedom to explore at your own pace and stop anywhere you like. Keep in mind that the roads in the Dolomites are winding and narrow, so this option is best for confident drivers. Be sure to have a good GPS for navigation as the roads are not marked that well.
  • Take public transportation : If you are on a budge using public transportation is a viable option. Just remember that it will take longer to get there and you will have to figure out how to get around.

What Can I See in One Day in the Dolomites? (With a Sample Itinerary)

Here is my recommended itinerary to hit the highlights:

  • Start your day early and head to the charming town of Cortina d’Ampezzo. This town is famous for its alpine architecture and mountain views.
  • Walk around town and look a the shops and have breakfast at one of the local cafes.
  • Next, head to the Falzarego Pass , which offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains. You can take a cable car to the top of the pass, which offers panoramic views of the Dolomites.
  • After taking in the views at the Falzarego Pass, head to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, which is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Dolomites.
  • You can hike to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo or take a bus from Cortina d’Ampezzo. The hike takes about three hours round-trip but the stunning views are well worth the effort.
  • If you prefer a less strenuous option, you can take a guided tour that includes a visit to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and other popular sights in the area.
  • After a full day of exploring the Dolomites, head back to Cortina d’Ampezzo for a relaxing evening.
  • Have dinner at one of the town’s many restaurants and enjoy the local cuisine.
  • After dinner take a walk and soak up the atmosphere and admire the twinkling lights of the town against the backdrop of the mountains.

The Telegraph

Ten of the best cycling holidays for 2024

2024 is set to be one of those cycling mega-years. On top of the usual three professional Grand Tours – in France, Spain, and Italy – and the World Championships in Switzerland, a summer Olympics (also in France) will be thrown in, for an extra sprinkle of fairy dust.

The Tour of Britain’s future still hangs in the balance, but across Europe and around the world, professional and amateur cyclists are gearing up for another 12 months of hairpin corners and steep ascents.

If the cycling bug hasn’t already bitten you, then 2024 might be the year it finally latches on. From Wales to the Arctic, we’ve selected ten of the best cycling holidays to whet your ravenous appetite, including serious cycles for the Mamils and Mawils, and gentle pootles for the easy riders, too.

Cycle the Cotswolds

New for 2024, this Oxford to Bath guided bike tour starts in the city of dreaming spires and ends with curved rows of honeystone Georgian buildings.

On the way you’ll take in villages such as Bibury, described by William Morris as the most beautiful in England, and Bampton, where scenes from Downton Abbey were filmed. Famed for its rolling hills and centuries-old pubs, the route also weaves through Bourton-on-the-Water, the Venice of the Cotswolds.

Exodus Adventure Travels ’ (020 8772 3743) new six-day tour starts at £2,099 per person, including bed and breakfast accommodation and a trip leader throughout.

Brecon Beacons and beyond

If you like the idea of carrying all your own gear and travelling under your own steam, then Roam Bikepacking offers something slightly different. It will equip you with a bike, saddlebags, a tent and sleeping bag, allowing you to get fully off road and into the wild.

Its new tour for 2024 will see guests take on Gospel Pass, Wales’s highest road, and Devil’s Staircase – one of Britain’s toughest climbs, reaching a maximum gradient of 20 per cent. They’ll also tell you about the best places to wild camp and swim.

Roam Bikepacking (07967 870654) can organise this four-day tour for £425 per person (camping) or £550 (B&B).

One for the road in France

2024 is set to be a vintage year for cycling in France. Not only will it host the annual Tour but also the summer Olympics. But while the pros will be powered by sports drinks and protein shakes, how about a leisurely amble around Champagne and Burgundy – two of Europe’s great wine-growing regions.

Highlights of this new tour include a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral in Reims, and a tasting at the Côte des Blancs wine estate. The laid-back route also takes in historic Dijon, the charming capital of Burgundy.

Exodus Adventure Travels (020 8772 3743) offers a seven-day tour from £4,399 per person, including flights, half-board accommodation, bike hire and a trip leader. Departures on June 23, July 14 and Sept 15 2024.

Midnight sun in Norway’s Lofoten Islands

This new self-guided cycling holiday explores one of northern Europe’s most spectacular and isolated regions, the Lofoten Archipelago. The route takes in deserted beaches and tiny fishing villages. If you’re really lucky, you might spot a white-tailed eagle.

Head north between the end of May and mid-July and the sun won’t set at all. Your bright nights will be spent in seaside lodges and red fishermen’s cabins. As for fuel: booze certainly won’t be cheap, but there will be plenty of local cheese and stockfish dumplings.

Headwater (01606 720199) is offering this new self-guided trip between June and August from £3,419 per person, including flights, accommodation, bike hire, and meals.

Discover the rural patchwork of Poland

Poland, you say? It’s not a country that many would associate with a cycling holiday, but then again, few operators share the vision of The Slow Cyclist, renowned for its off-the-beaten-track adventures.

This new tour kicks off in May and takes in Poland’s Lower Silesia region, bordering Germany and northern Czechia. By day, you’ll pass castles, forests and extinct volcanoes, but at night there’s plenty of time for Polish wine – the country is home to 400 vineyards – and nutritious hearty local food. Silesia is best known for its poppyseed cakes.

The Slow Cyclist (01865 410356) is offering a new four-night trip from £2,290 per person, based on travelling as a group of 12, including airport transfers, a support vehicle, and English-speaking guides.

Train like a pro in the French Alps

Aimed at serious cyclists, this week-long training camp based out of Morzine – host of the Tour de France on more than 20 occasions – is probably as close to riding professionally as you can get.

This “holiday” includes a private chef, daily massages, and a support vehicle. You’ll also receive a pre-camp training plan and an all-inclusive drinks package for the evenings. But don’t overdo it – the cycling will be tough. You’ll climb over 40,000 feet in a week. One of the climbs, the Col de la Pierre Carrée, is considered among the toughest in the world.

Sa Calobra Cycling Club (0033 688 699 160) is running this seven-night holiday between June 28 and July 5 2024 and costs from £2,208 per person.

A long weekend in Italy’s Dolomites

This is a convenient cycling holiday for people who don’t fancy spending a whole week in the saddle. Rather than moving each night, you’ll be based in a four-star lakeside hotel, in the village of Alleghe.

Each day ride comes in three options, offering mighty climbs for experienced col baggers, or more relaxed jaunts for the beginners. Epic scenery is, however, guaranteed for all. Day four tackles Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites.

Marmot Tours (01373 830409) offers four-night tours for £1,350 per person this July and August. Airport transfers and half-board accommodation are included, so too is wine with dinner.

Explore Ireland’s south coast

Cycle from Kerry to Cork on this new self-guided eight-day tour, which explores the green and hilly backroads of Ireland’s glorious south. Highlights include the forests and coasts around Clonakilty, and the Drombeg Stone Circle: 17 standing stones that date back 2,000 years.

An evening spent in the coastal town of Kinsale gives riders the option to visit James’s Fort, the ruins of a 17th-century fortress. The final day’s riding passes the Royal Cork Yacht Club, purportedly the world’s oldest.

Saddle Skedaddle (0191 265 1110) will run this new tour between April and October and it costs from £1,445 per person, including bed and breakfast accommodation, luggage transfers and digital route notes.

An e-bike tour of southern Japan

Explore the mountainous splendour of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s main islands, on a Yamaha e-bike tour, which covers 240 miles in a week. Following sections of the car-free Shimanami Kaido cycling trail, you’ll hop between the smaller islands of the Seto Inland Sea via five suspension bridges.

After touring the Shikoku temple pilgrimage route – comprising 88 sacred sites – your evenings will include sake tastings and soaks in onsens (hot springs). Add-on excursions to Hiroshima and Kyoto can be arranged at the start and end of the tour.

Freedom Treks (01273 977968) offers this holiday in March, April and May. Prices start from £3,757 and include accommodation, meals and a local guide.

Ride across America

The Big Daddy of cycling holidays, this 67-night expedition will cross one of the planet’s greatest nations, and takes in the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park and the Great Plains.

On this 4,000-mile journey between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans you’ll average 67 miles a day, with a rest day every 10. The comfort, company, and security of a group will make it extra special. 2024 is a US Presidential Election year, so expect plenty to talk about.

Bike Adventures (01273 413489) is running a TransAm tour between July 14 and Sept 18, including a tour leader, support vehicle and accommodation, costing £10,395 per person.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

The Not to Miss Ski Tours of the Dolomites

  • Dolomites Tips
  • Experience Finder

What to do ?

When to go , type of travel.

Known for its breathtaking panoramic views, rich history, endless outdoor activities, and gourmet food fit for the gods, the Dolomite Mountains offer more: some of the best on-piste ski touring in the world. These incredible mountains feature 16 skiing tours through 12 different ski resorts, all lift-accessible on a single ski pass! The slopes are many – 1,200 kilometers or 746 miles of prepared pistes – and perfect for skiers of every skill level, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

On these ski tours, you can discover the mountains in comfort with lifts and cable cars. No hiking, no snowshoeing, no skinning – just skiing, pure and simple. These tours encompass the entire system of resorts and are the doorway to 450 lift systems in by far the largest skiing carousel world wide. No where else in the world can you access such a variety of lift-service ski tours covering so much ground.

Among these world-class ski tours, there are a few that shouldn’t be missed. Below is a list of some of our favourites, selected for their incredible skiing, breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, or savory cuisine, and, in many cases, all of the above!

The Sellaronda

This fantastic tour circumnavigates the Sella Massif, and is one of the most spectacular ski tours of the world. Considered somewhat of a “merry-go-round” for intermediate level skiers, this unique circular connection of lifts and runs was once the only way the ancient inhabitants of the Ladin villages could maintain a connection with each other. Nowadays it’s a modern day carousel that connects four Dolomite passes, four Ladin valleys (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, and Livinallongo), and three districts – you’ll have the opportunity to see more of the Dolomites in one day than many see on an entire trip!  The route can be done clockwise, by following the orange arrow signs, or counter-clockwise by following the green arrows. The Sellaronda is a relatively short tour can be easily done in one day, without ever having to remove your skis! With a length of just under 40 kilometers (25 miles), 26 of which are ski slopes (16 miles), but requiring approximately 2 hours of ski lift travel time and high elevations, it is recommended that the tour begin in the morning to ensure ample time for completion before lift service closes for the day.

The Great War Ski Tour

Known by a variety of names including the Great War Ski Tour, the Freedom Tour, the Giro della Grande Guerra, and the First World War Ski Tour, this tour takes skiers under the cliff walls of some of the most amazing Dolomites summits (Marmolada, Sella, Sassongher, Conturines, Fanis, Lagazuoi, Tofane, Cinque Torri [Five Towers], Nuvolao-Averau, Monte Pelmo, Civetta) and offers breathtaking panoramic views unmatched anywhere in the world. It also takes you around the Col di Lana, the epicenter of the battles between Austrian, German and Italian troops. A wonderful contrast is drawn between the pristine and silent slopes and the rich history of the various war-relics that can be found in this area. In between ski runs, let your experienced guide show you long-forgotten ditches, tunnels and bunkers that once served as shelter for Italian and Austrian soldiers – a veritable open-air museum of WWI history. And there is even a museum edifice to visit in Marmolada, The Museum of the Great War, the highest altitude museum in all of Europe! From here, skiers marvel at the incredible ice walls of the “Great Canyon” of the Serrai of Sottoguda, at the foot of Marmolada.

This tour requires the entire day; including time for lunch you'll be on the move for 7 to 8 hours covering 82.5 kilometers (51 miles), 31 kilometers (19 miles) of which, a good half of the day, are on skis. Lifts, ski busses, and a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride round out the rest of the distance covered. And have we mentioned the skiing? The run from Lagazuoi to Armentarola and the Punta Rocca run (over the Marmolada glacier towards Malga Ciapela) are particularly spectacular.

A final stop: in addition to fantastic history and skiing, the area of this tour also boasts one of the most unique bars in the world.  Located on the Fertazza plateau, it’s fashioned completely from ice and is equipped with 100 different flavors of schnapps to sample!

Ski Tour Olympia

In 1956, the Winter Olympics were broadcast on television for the first time – EVER. And these Winter Olympics took place in the Dolomites’ Cortina d’Ampezzo, right on these very slopes:

  • Pista Olympia (Stratofana), the protagonist in the Downhill race
  • Pista Vitelli, the protagonist in the Giant Slalom
  • Pista "a" Col Druscié, the protagonist in the Slalom

The Ski Tour Olympia enables highly skilled skiers to experience those very same tracks. Not sure your skiing is up to Olympic calibre? The Olympia Tour offers a variety of slopes to suit skiers of differing skill levels, so skiers of all ability levels can participate in this historic and unique ski arena!

The Olympia tour can be tackled in either one or two days. En route you’ll cross over several summits including the Tofana di Rozes (3,120m / 10,236'), Monte Cristallo (3,221m / 10,568'), Monte Faloria (2,123m / 6,965'), and Forcella Staunies (3,221m / 10,567'), with many other unique features to explore and enjoy.

  • The Tofana and the run from Pomedes to Rumerlo offer lightning fast slopes amid unusual rock formations.
  • Stop in and see the Duca d’Aosta hut, which housed the Olympic flame before the opening ceremonies.
  • Advanced skiers will enjoy the challenge of the Vitelli slope, Stratondi, Canalone Franchetti, Tondi Normale and Slittone, with the ultimate run of the Canalone Staunies available for the most experienced skiers.

Throughout, great skiing fun is assured! All this skiing making you hungry? The healthy and tasty 'Olympia dish' served at some traditional huts along the itinerary is also worth trying.

Still haven’t met your adrenaline quota? Then don’t deny yourself the pleasure of just one more Olympic experience: a thrilling trip by Taxi Bob Sleigh on the trail of legendary Olympic champion Eugenio Monti who hails from Cortina!

Marmolada Ski Tour

The aptly named “Queen of the Dolomites”, this mountain boasts the highest peak of all the Dolomites, reaching a height of 3,342 meters (10,965'), and provides some of the most spectacular skiing experiences on earth. This tour begins in Arabba and moves on to Porta Vescovo, which offers mesmerizing views of the Marmolada Glacier. Next, skiers continue on the Ornella run to Pescoi, over the ridge of Passo Padon, on through the Passo Fedaia and to Punta Rocca. An incredible tour, it covers over 1,300 meters (4,265') in elevation and offers an astonishing 12 kilometer-long (7.5 mile-long) run. The Marmolada Tour not only offers amazing ski adventures, but also provides some of the most beautiful views in the world.

Trevalli Ski Tour

Also known as a “Tour of Emotions”, this tour is set in such natural beauty that it often evokes strong feelings from those who partake. It begins at the famous Tre Valli ski resort and offers a tour of the villages of Moena, Lusia, Passo San Pellegrino and Falcade, where exciting views of the Dolomite peaks will follow one after another. You’ll travel through the natural park of Paneveggio, where there are several traditional wooden huts, chalets, and ski bars to stop and rest. Multiple fast chairlifts provide skiers with access to various peaks and runs, such as Col Margherita, from which there are incredible 360° panoramic views of the Civetta, the south side of the Marmolada, the mountain chain of the Catinaccio, and other well known summits. Ground travel between runs is free, in the form of a skibus.

The 1970 Gardena World Championship Tour

Located primarily in the Gröden Valley, this tour consists of some of the most amazing ski slopes in the world, and is the home of several 1970 World Champions which is how the tour got its name.

  • Karl Schranz became Giant Slalom World Champion on the very run where the tour now winds its way to Selva Gardena.
  • Annerösli Zryd, also bore the title of World Champion for conquering Dantecepies.
  • And Swiss Bernard Russi was also crowned champion in 1970 on the Saslong, one of the most popular runs for skiing enthusiasts on the Gardena tour.

In the afternoon sunshine the tour leads on to Col Raiser, and ends with 9 kilometer (5.6 mile) romantic run to Ortisei.

Alpe di Siusi – The Witches’ Tour

This unique tour has routes dating back to the 1600’s, when Castle Prösels was the setting of many witch trials.  History states that the majority of the mysterious supernatural events leading up to these trials happened on Alpe di Siusi.  There are seven “stations” to see during this tour, and a variety of activities such as the fun park, the witches’ humpback run, a witch’s chimney, (an obstacle course made of snow), and the witches’ park, containing life-size figurines.  This tour is certainly packed with fun for the whole family!

Santa Croce Ski Tour (Gourmet Tour)

Perhaps the best has been saved for last, as this tour offers the best of everything in the Dolomites.  Ski slopes that vary from easy to moderate offer enjoyment for families and skiers looking for a day of relaxation, enjoying the culture and natural beauty of the region.  Skiing is accompanied by a feast of local delicacies which are available along the whole route of the tour.  In fact, each family-owned refuge along the route is specially equipped with its own unique dish which can be enjoyed with a savory glass of local wine.  From Col Alto or Piz Sorega to Santa Croce, the entire tour can be made without removing your skis.  Skiers can stop, enjoy some delicious local cuisine and take in the breathtaking views of the area.

For ski enthusiasts, the Dolomites offers some of the best runs on earth, all amidst the backdrop of exquisite views and natural wonders.  These seven tours should be on every skier’s to-do list.

Still want more? Other ski tours in the Dolomites include:

  • Ladin Legends Ski Tour follows in the footsteps of where the traditional stories and fables of the Dolomites took place.
  • Nature Reserves Ski Tour where you’ll ski within two of the Dolomites most beautiful Nature Parks, Puez-Odle and Fanes-Sennes-Braies.
  • Ski Tour Panorama takes you to the summit of Sella Brunech (2,428m / 7,966'), where he panorama from here will leave you breathless and astonished: from the Rosengarten to the Sassolungo to the Marmolada.
  • On the King Laurin Ski Tour you’ll visit the Paolina hut with a panoramic view which is simply out of this world, looking over the kingdom of the legendary dwarf king who was proud of his Rosengarten.
  • Enjoy “a trip in the sunshine on skis” on the Meridiana Alternativ where you’ll follow the sunny slopes as you ski around Sesto Peak which acts as a veritable sundial!
  • The Magnifica Comunità is actually a series of three different tours that show off the sunny arena of the Magnificent Community of Fiemme/Obereggen: the Forest of the Violin, the actual forest from which the wood the Stradivari violins was harvested; the Fables and Stories tour which leads through a fantasy world of dwarfs, giants, and bewitched princesses; and the Coral Mountains/Latemar Marionettes tour which highlights the Dolomites geologic makeup of 270-year-old coral mountains within a sea of algae and fish, today known as the mineral “Dolomite.”
  • Ski Tour Wildlife offers some of the best opportunities for spotting winter wildlife in the Dolomites, including golden eagles and chamois (a native European goat-antelope species).
  • The Plose History Skiing Tour follows the trail of the early pioneers of skiing in the Dolomites, and visits some of the early establishments and shelters, including a monastery known for its outstanding wine cellar!

There’s always another tour or an unexplored run to discover skiing in the Dolomites!
