Paris (Le Havre), France

Le Havre is a gateway to Paris and Normandy. Most day-trippers join an excursion to the Normandy beaches. A tour of Normandy offers a look into the past with visits to the historic D-Day landing sites and the Museum of Landing Day. Those traveling to Paris are offered a number of tours that highlight the city's world-famous landmarks. Shorter excursions to the fishing village of Honfleur and the seaside resort of Deauville are also offered from this port.

How to get from Le Havre Cruise Port to Paris - travel by train, bus or taxi!

The journey from the port of La Havre to the capital Paris can be made in several ways. We know that the possibility of choice leads to doubts about which way to choose. Everyone wants to make the most of their time on the trip. And that's why today we come to you with an analysis of four options for transport from the cruise port of Le Havre to Paris, so that you can save time and choose the option for yourself with peace of mind.

The main factors we have taken into account are price, time and transport convenience. Matching the ship's schedule is also important. We wouldn't want to land in Paris with our eyes fixed on our watch and the stress of not getting back on board in time. And at the same time, we would want to spend as much time as possible in the French capital of love.

Which mode of transport will ensure that you savour every Parisian moment while remaining budget-friendly and relaxed? For those in a hurry, here's a quick overview! We'll go into more detail in the sections below.

Getting to Paris from Le Havre Port by dedicated cruise bus

ncl excursion to paris

The convenience of the bus is certainly the easy way to find it. You usually travel in a small group, plus the bus will be waiting for you 1000 ft/300 m from the cruise ship terminal. In addition, the way to the bus is marked with VEXPERIO signs and our experienced staff will help you if you have any problems. The bus will transport you to Paris in a few hours, providing you with a comfortable, air-conditioned room that will be the perfect time to relax before exploring the city.

How long does it take to get from Le Havre to Paris by bus?

The journey from Le Havre to Paris takes approximately three hours. A stop is provided during the journey to stretch your legs in peace and use the toilet if necessary. In Paris itself, you can start your tour from the Eiffel Tower, as the bus parks nearby. This is a great starting point as there are many famous sites nearby. The Louvre, Notre-Dame Cathedral and maybe a few Parisian cafes to try the iconic crossaints and chocolate? The choice is yours, enjoy about four to five hours of free time to explore the city.

However, if you'd like a more structured tour, with a guide to introduce you to the history of Paris, the VEXPERIO team can help you organise this.

The pick-up point from the city will also be at a recognisable landmark - the Arc de Triomphe. This will make it easy to find, but remember to be on time. A group is travelling by bus and the time of the ship's departure from the port is crucial so punctuality is important.

This bus service is designed to provide a good mix of guide assistance and personal time to explore Paris. We wish you a fantastic tour!

Travelling from Le Havre Port to Paris by train

ncl excursion to paris

Travelling by bus is not your ideal transport option? Or maybe you'd like to experience something different - after all, you can go anywhere by bus, but not, for example, by French rail.  If you are interested in travelling from Le Havre to Paris by train, we have put together all the necessary details for you.

How long does it take?

The Le Havre to Paris train service is well done, so there are a wide range of train options to choose from. However, as time is of the essence to see as much of Paris as possible, we focused on the fastest option. The train takes around 2 hours and 10 minutes, covering a route of 175 kilometres.

To get to the train station in Le Havre, you can walk about 30 minutes from the cruise terminal or book a taxi. These are easily accessible and can get you to the station in just around 10 minutes. Taxi fares range from €9 to €12 for a one-way journey.

From the moment the cruise ship arrives at Le Havre, a breathtaking day trip to Paris awaits you. Here is a practical breakdown to help you navigate and make the most of your time:

  • Le Havre dock to the train station: Once docked, allow approximately 45 minutes to disembark and catch a taxi to Le Havre train station. Assume a fairly large allowance to allow for any unexpected delays or queues at the taxi rank.
  • Train to Paris: If you arrive at 7:30am and depart quickly, you'll be in a good position to catch the 9:18am train, which will put you at Paris Saint-Lazare train station at 11:22am.
  • The heartbeat of Paris - the Eiffel Tower:   From Saint-Lazare train station, the iconic Eiffel Tower can be reached in 30 minutes by public transport or in around 15 minutes by taxi.
  • Parisian exploration: The schedule provides around 3.5-4 hours to wander around the Eiffel Tower and nearby attractions. You can visit museums, walk along the banks of the Seine or eat a croissant in a cosy Parisian café and enjoy the atmosphere of the city.
  • On the return journey: To ensure a stress-free return, aim to start your return journey to Saint-Lazare at around 3:30 p.m. This gives a total of around 4.5 hours in Paris, taking into account the 1 hour you will spend in transit between the station and the heart of the city.
  • Always be prepared: As with all travel, be aware of potential hiccups. There may be train delays or public transport problems. It is wise to keep up to date with train timetables and any service announcements so that you have enough time to get back to the terminal

Remember, while the trip may seem short, it's the quality of the experience that counts. Enjoy every Parisian moment!

How much does it cost to get from Le Havre terminal to Paris by train?

Taking into account all the transport costs:

Train Tickets: Between €28 and €43 (one way). As it's a round trip, the maximum you'd spend would be €86.

Taxi at Le Havre: Approximately €10 each way, so that's €20 for a round trip.

Transit in Paris: Between €5 and €10 for moving between Gare St Lazare and the Eiffel Tower. Since you'll need to get back to the station as well, the maximum would be €20 .

Adding all the maximum costs together: €86 (train) + €20 (taxi) + €30 (Paris transit) = €136 .

If you would like to make additional savings and are confident about this journey and your own punctuality, booking train tickets three months in advance would be a good idea. Buying tickets this early results in a lower price, which usually tops out during the tourist season.

Travelling from Le Havre Cruise Port to Paris by taxi

ncl excursion to paris

Previous forms of transport have been public or group transport, and we know that some people value their privacy and are interested in a private form of transport. This is why we are providing a brief breakdown of the direct route from Le Havre Cruise Port to Paris by taxi.

There is no denying, the comfort of privacy means that this will be the most expensive option presented. If you're interested in the best possible price book a private taxi online before arriving at Le Havre Port.

The distance between the port and Paris is around 200 kilometres and the journey time is very dependent on the specific situation on the road. It usually takes around two to three hours.

While taxis provide the ultimate in convenience straight from the ship to the heart of the city, it is a balance between cost and benefit. Those travelling in a group or looking for a direct route, without the dance of train schedules or crowded buses, may find the appeal of a taxi hard to resist.

This option should cost you between €350 and €500 one way for a group of 4, meaning if you can find a company to fill in the whole car the round trip will come to around €700 to €1000 .

The private taxi option can take stops at your demand, and travel a bit faster than a bus on the highways, guaranteeing you around 1 hour more in the city of Paris.

Shore excursion from the port of Le Havre

A very interesting option for those who would like to make the most of their time in Paris while not having to worry about getting back to the ship on time is shore excursions. Such excursions offer the convenience of being picked up and returned directly to the port, as well as providing a guide to ensure unforgettable memories.

The duration of such a tour depends on the option chosen. VEXPERIO offers three tours, differentiated in such a way that everyone can find the perfect one for themselves. We will give a brief description of each one below, but we encourage you to take a look at the full offer:

From Le Havre: Paris Guided Day Trip Shore Excursion

After the tour, the bus will take you back to the port, on time for a stress-free boarding.

Direct transport from the port, punctual return, an experienced guide who will join you en route so you can admire the beauty of the city and listen to the history of Paris in comfort. Once there, you will have plenty of free time to enjoy a peaceful sampling of French cuisine or some souvenir shopping.

Going on the NCL Pearl in April with be in Le Harve on VE day 5/8 from 6:30 am to 7 pm.

Is it possible to do some some Paris in this day?

Any suggestions for a reliable tour guide, trying to get a van together of 12 or so other pax.   With a 5 hour drive back and fourth that will give us approx      5 hours plus to tour.

Thanks in advance.

I love to rent cars in ports and have done so all over the world.  In fact, we've got one reserved for next October in Le Havre.  But, I'm not sure I would attempt Paris on this itinerary.  First, to my knowledge, the earliest any of the rental car agencies open is 8:00, which would put you close to 8:30 getting on the road.  That gets you into Paris around 11:00 AM, if it takes 2 1/2 hours as you say.  The rental car agency closes at 6:30, which is also your "all aboard" time.  I'd be heading back from Paris no later than 3:00 PM to give yourself some pad in case of traffic or a flat tire or some other problem.  That leaves you with only 4 hours in Paris.  So, no time to eat and very little time to even stop and tour a site.  I did Paris once in 6 hours, which gave me enough time to walk through Notre Dame, walk by the Louvre, eat lunch, and climb the Eiffel Tower.  You'll have to decide if 4 hours is worth the 5 hours of driving.

If Le Havre is the last port before the end of the cruise, it may be worth arranging to leave the ship there and fly home from Paris. Many people do this, but you need to check that the cruise line is okay with it.

Thanks

Have you done the DDay beaches? That will be well worth the time if you have not...... If you air is not booked, you might take the chunnel from England to Paris before or after your trip and do Paris then......otherwise the train might be a quicker option for a few hours in Paris.   ENJOY!

Two ports after Le havre, Belgium and Amsterdan.

I vote for making Tilbury an over night.  West End shows, etc. It the port next to Le havre

Two cautions , t's a long way your 2 to 3 hours is if all goes well, very little time to see much .Traffic can be heavy on the routes into Paris, so to give yourself enough time to return to the ship, you will reduce sightseeing time. Secondly VE day in France is a holiday so many locations will not open as normal, routes could be much busier than usual and this could disrupt the day.

I did an NCL excursion last year to Paris from Le Havre. We had time for a tour around the city and an excellent lunch cruise on the Seine. It was a great day and we didn't have to worry about getting back in time at the end of the day.

Victory in Europe Day is celebrated all over Europe. In France, it is a day of celebration and remembrance with church services, ceremonies and parades. French flags fly from the tops of poles everywhere and the air force thunders overhead in dramatic flyovers. Wreaths are laid during the ceremonies at   monument aux morts   in each village, town and city.

Being a national holiday, schools, post offices, banks, businesses, shops and many restaurants are closed. The streets are full of people attending parades and the red, white and blue of the French flag is everywhere.

Thanks for posting this. I just realized the Getaway is docked in Le Havre that same day as the Pearl. Guess I'll have to rethink my shopping day. It will be fun to join the celebration though!

If the shops and restaurants etc closer to Le Havre may be closed, maybe the bus trip with lunch cruise on the Seine is not such a bad idea!  Though it certainly would be a tease to see such a tiny glimpse of the city.

I personally would not take a chance of missing my ship's departure with such a long drive on my own, too many things could go wrong.  I feel safer taking a ship tour when it's a location so far from the port.  I've seen people left standing on the pier....

The seine cruise was a bit of a tease but we saw all the main sites around the city, then the River tour and an excellent lunch with multiple bottles of wine. It was a fun day.

When we were in Le Havre in 2017, we were there on Bastille Day, so another holiday for the country. We talked with some people at dinner who went to Paris for the day and they were disappointed. It was a lot to tackle in the one day. A lot of time spent traveling for sure.

We did the Overlord tours to Omaha Beach and Bayeux ourselves, as that was a bucket list trip for me! It was an amazing day, great tour, great guide, etc... Just loved the whole day. And it was relaxing, not rushed. We could have stayed out just a little longer, but our guide was concerned about traffic because of the holiday. He told us a lot of people head towards the coast area for the holiday too. But it was a great tour!

When we rented a car in Le Havre we ran into an unexpected farmers’s protest shortly after leaving the city.  Several dozen tractors and farms vehicles had arranged themselves bumper to bumper in all the freeway lanes, making a blockade.  They were travelling at tractor speed.

We exited at the next opportunity and fell back on Plan B, lunch in Caen and a drive back along the coast on secondary roads - one gorgeous old village after another all the way to le Havre ( pronounced Le Av).

Have a Plan B if you try your excursion.

We will be in Le Havre for the day (as so many other posts have mentioned) - last time there we decided to NOT take the LONG trek into Paris - this time we have decided that is what we really want to do - to at least see Paris.

YES - we know that most of the day will be spent traveling to and from (so we DON"T want to take a bus - but want to hire our own guide)

Yes We know that will cost $$

All of the posts that I have been able to find on this subject either recommend ToursbyLocals (which we have used before - they don't have anyone listed to take us from Le Havre to and from Paris) or other posts recommend taking the cruise-line bus (NCL - don't see one offered when we are there (April 2020) - Or most posts recommend that we spend more than just one day there....  We are two "senior citizens" can't do all that much walking anyway - so don't really need to see ALL THAT much of Paris

Has anyone used Private Tours-Paris ? - Or can ANYONE recommend a Private Tour guide for this ?

THANK YOU    😀

We are on the NCL Star next May (2020) as of now - they aren't offering any kind of a shore excursion to Paris.  Was you experience that they posted availability of that excursion closer to sail date ?

How much time did you get to actually spend in Paris -

This sounds like what we REALLY want to do !

Some of our excursions weren’t posted until a month or so before we cruised.  This one did sell out so watch for it.  We had about an hour or so tour on the bus, then the cruise on the Seine with a wonderful lunch, the about a half hour to walk around the area near the boats. No real free time to explore the city or shop, but a great intro to Paris and all of the highlights. I would do it again!

  • 3 weeks later...

Which of the NCL excursions to Paris did you take ? - It looks there is one that is called "Paris on your Own" - and then another one the includes a 2-hour bus trip around the town - a recent review of that last one (which includes the bus trip around town)

indicated she was VERY disappointed about the location that the bus "dropped them off" for passengers to begin their tour "on their own" - I guess it was out in the middle of no-where

Did you have such an experience ?

We hope to be able to walk from where the bus trip drops us off - and visit the Eiffel Tower

Mine included lunch on a river boat on the Seine. We had about an hour bus tour when we first arrived in Paris, then boarded the boats. The lunch was multi-course and included unlimited red and white wine. We went up to Notre Dame and down to the model for the statue of liberty. It was a good 2 1/2 - 3 hours. We then had about 20 minutes to walk around the bus parking area along the river. There were vendors set up there with the usual souvenir stuff. There was really no time to explore on your own. It was a great day though.

We think Bob's post offers very sound advice.  Paris is DW's favorite city (world wide) and we have spent more then our share of time in that city.  We also have taken many cruises that had port days in Le Havre.  Going to Paris (from Le Havre) for a port day tour is not a great way to see Paris although it is better then nothing if it is your only option.  Paris is best enjoyed by spending several days (or even weeks) in the city!  We have previously done just what Bob suggests and its a great option.  You arrange with your cruise line to disembark (at Le Havre) a day early.  You can then take the train (or arrange other transportation) to Paris and spend some real time (perhaps a few days) in the city.  You then fly home from CDG.  Another alternative (if you have the time and money) is to spend a few days in Paris, then take the Eurostar train to London and spend some time in London before flying home.  Or course there is also the option of just spending more time in France (or Europe) before returning home.

We have decided to fly into Paris 3 days pre cruise to enjoy the city and then fly SAS 3 days to Copenhagen before our cruise. When we get to Le Havre we will have other places to visit.

Although I am not a big fan of cruise line excursions (we find them overpriced and overcrowded) your post makes me think this might be your best option.  NCL will certainly offer excursions to Paris which will use bus transportation.  Hiring a guide/car/driver in Le Havre will be very expensive unless you can join with a few others (try using the CC Roll Call for your cruise and see if anyone is interested) to hire a tour.  There is also frequent (usually hourly) train service between Le Havre and Paris but this does not sound like a good option for you given your posted limitations.  Otherwise a possibility would be to take the train to Paris and arrange with Tours by Locals to have a guide meet you in Paris.

You are probably aware that Paris is a huge city and most meaningful tours do involve a lot of walking.  It is possible that NCL will offer some kind of bus tour with minimal walking but we have no clue.  Another possibility is to get yourself to Paris and do some sightseeing on a hop-on-hop-off bus.

I guess as folks who really do love Paris we join with the others who have told you that this city is best visited on a multi-day visit (we think a week is too short).  One can certainly minimize walking by using public transit or the HoHo buses.  But the limitations of a short port day visit are difficult to overcome.

Hank offers excellent advice.  On our recent Viking tour, the participants on the Le Havre - Paris - Le Havre day trip returned exhausted, but happy to have seen Paris.  Several said that might be the only opportunity in their lives to see the City of Light.  They seemed delighted to have seen such world famous sights as the Etoile, Louvre, Eiffel Tower, etc.

I made a similar, difficult choice. My wife and I have been to France several times, but never to Normandy or Brittany. For close to 50 years, I've wanted to see the mountain church of St Michel. But, I didn't want to rush it by spending eight hours on the bus, for just three hours seeing the building.  So, I hope to spend two or three days of a future trip to France focused only on that building and mount.

  • 872lj 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best tour and tour guide ever! This was the best excursion I have ever taken. Our guide, Bertrand, made it informative and gave us all a connection of what it was like in Normandy. This fulfilled a lifelong dream to visit Omaha Beach, the surrounding areas, and cemeteries as my father landed there as part of The Big Red 1 in the field artillary division. What my father experienced lived with him for the rest of his life and our guide, Bertrand, helped me see this through a new set of eyes. He showed me where my father was when he earned his first medal for bravery. Thank you for designing and taking us on this journey. Read more Written October 11, 2023
  • WhitlamsBerlinTours 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Brilliant day with Bertrand! Our guide Bertrand was great! He met us at the port as soon as got off the ship and right away we were whisked across the countryside to see war graves, the location of German guns, and Omaha Beach. Along the way Bertrand is a clear overview of WWII leading up to D-Day, the 5 beaches, and several heartbreaking stories of individuals that gave their lives on the beaches of Normandy. Bathrooms were freely available throughout the day. The weather was warm, but the air conditioning on the coach really did its job - I was even a bit chilly! Lunch was provided - a great big French baguette, potato chips, cake, and a bottle of water (they had loads of extra water, too). Bertrand clearly knows and loves his history. He even sat with Canadian guests on the coach on the way home to talk in detail about the Canadian landings. All in all we had a great day. It was a packed itinerary and I’m so happy we took the day to see everything! Read more Written October 10, 2023
  • Wc2305 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing experience This was an awesome experience and the highlight of my trip. The tour guide Bertram (I believe that was his name) was absolutely amazing. He had only been doing this tour for a few months but he was a wealth of information and super enthusiastic. I learned so much on this tour and was inspired to rewatch "Saving Private Ryan" when I got back on the ship. We stopped at several places on the tour and Bertram had lots of stories. I would've loved to have more time at the cemetery because we didn't get to visit the museum. We had plenty of room on the bus and the ride was smooth and comfortable. The best part of it all was when our National Anthem and Taps was played throughout the cemetery. It truly gave me chill bumps. Read more Written October 9, 2023

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.

Hat-Tossing Paris-Roubaix Spectator Will Face “Action”

The fan threw his hat at the bike of Mathieu Van der Poel with about 42 kilometers to go.

121st paris roubaix 2024

Footage of the roadside spectator clearly shows the entire incident on the Mérignies à Avelin sector. What’s perhaps most frightening about the moment is that van der Poel was barreling down the cobbles at around 48 km. per hour (29.8 mph). If the cap had gotten tangled in his bike it could have been disastrous.

The Union Nationale des Cyclistes Professionnels (UNCP) are the French members of the CPA (Cyclistes Professionnels Associés). Because the race was on French soil, they are responsible for alerting local authorities.

CPA president Adam Hansen told GCN that they would use the national federations to take the person to court.

“The CPA can’t do it because we’re a Swiss organization but our members, so in this case the French association, the UNCP, can take the individual to court. They’ll file their report to the local authorities and they’ll do a full investigation. We’ll find that person, that’s for sure.”

GCN reported that, “The CPA and UNCP also have a historical track record of finding spectators who have caused incidents and pursuing them in civil courts. A spectator who caused a huge crash at the Tour de France in 2021 was fined €1,200 by a French court and forced to pay a token €1 to the UNCP.”

Road.cc reported that in an interview after the race, van der Poel said he had felt like “something white” had hit him. “Apparently not everyone likes me riding in the lead. But I don’t care,” he added.

Van der Poel has frequently been the target of roadside disobedience. Last week at Flanders he had a beer thrown at him. And during his cyclocross season he endured incessant boos from the crowds. So much so that he’s retaliated back at times.

Luckily nothing tragic happened because of this incident. But it’s a good reminder that no matter how passionate you are about racing, just about everything is captured and made public. So it’s best to be respectful, if for no other reason than the fact that you will be caught.
