Fantastic - thank you for your help:)

We spent most of our time on deck during the day, so we could easily move to see from both sides of the ship. Nights and evenings are pretty cold.

If I didn't have a balcony, I would probably just get an inside room. The one oceanview we had on a cruise was not even worth it to me as the window was dirty and not well positioned for looking out of it. And if you don't have a balcony, you won't be in your room that much anyway as you will want to be outside most of the time.

Thank you 😊

We spent a lot of time on the decks, especially on Glacier Bay day, but one of the highlights was enjoying a glass of wine on our balcony when our side was facing the glacier, and we loved the ease of just stepping out on our balcony to enjoy the views and see what was going on. High balconies are not great for wildlife, such as whales, but they’re fine for glaciers and scenic cruising. Bring binoculars, one for everyone!

However, if the cost of a balcony prevented us from taking the excursions we wanted, we’d opt for the cheaper cabin.

If staying an the balcony cruising the glaciers you only get 50% of the experience as distinct from being on the deck where you can just walk to the other side when the ship does a 180° turn.

True, Frommy, but you could split your time between the deck and your balcony, which is what we did on GB day, rushing back when the ship turned.

For me, "best" is when I can get to both Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier, so I chose a southbound Princess cruise for September 2024. it includes the standard ports (Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan). For many others, "best" means a bit more ...

The two lines with the most ships, itineraries, unusual ports, and insider connections are Princess and Holland America Line. All my Alaska cruises have been on HAL, as I prefer smaller ships. It's hard for other lines to get National Park admission to the premier of all scenic cruising locations, Glacier Bay.

  7. Best Alaskan cruise and land tour

Yep, lots of options! Do the land tour separate as Mombear advised. That way you get to include what *you* want to see and do, and not be herded around like a sheep on a cookie-cutter itinerary designed to bring in the most $$$ for the cruise company.. Best cruise--that is subjective. Also timing matters...if you are doing a one-way cruise (between Vancouver and either Whittier or Seward), I ...

There is so much to see and I was often out on the balcony until very late at night since it was still light outside.
