Adelaide to Darwin – the “Explorers  Way”

Sun 07 to Sat 20 April 2024 (14 days) Seniors $5,400 Adults $5,450 S/Supp $1,200

A tour for those who wish to discover the spectacular scenery of our Red Centre. Be amazed by the size of our iconic Uluru and the beauty of the nearby Kata Tjuta. Explore historical Alice Springs and the stunning MacDonnell Ranges, and marvel at the Coober Pedy “moonscape”. Be amazed by the Northern Territory journey through the Outback and discover the incredible natural wonders. The Australian outback has to be experienced to be believed.

We begin in Adelaide, the home of Festivals and food, arts and culture. We will visit the Mount Lofty Summit, the majestic peak of the Mount Lofty Ranges in the Adelaide Hills, which provides spectacular panoramic views across Adelaide’s city skyline to the coast.  The peak rises more than 710 meters above sea level.  Later you can enjoy a ride on “Popeye” on the Torrens River (own expense) for a different look at the city, or immerse yourself in the culture of Adelaide’s North Terrace, before being transferred to your accommodation.  (D)

We begin our day by travelling to Port Pirie.  Smelters have been in operation here since 1889, and it became the biggest lead smelter in the world by 1934. We have a town tour and then free time to explore this quaint little town. In the afternoon we advance to Port Augusta, situated on the Spencer’s Gulf.  Whilst here we visit the Wadlata Centre, a journey back in time about South Australia and the Flinders Ranges.  Later you can enjoy a boat cruise to the top of Spencer’s Gulf (own expense), then to our accommodation. (B,D)

We start the day by visiting Mathew Flinders Lookout in the Arid Botanical Gardens. We can see the grandeur of the Flinders Ranges from here. We continue on to Lake Gairdner, the largest salt lake in South Australia, then on to Port Augusta on the Spencer’s Gulf. We follow the highway to Woomera, famous for its RAAF Woomera Range Complex (a large systems testing range covering an area of approximately 122,000 sq kms). The Woomera Project lasted for 34 years and became one of the most secret allied establishments in operation during the Cold War, with a population at one stage of around 7,000 people. In the afternoon we reach Coober Pedy, our home for two nights. ((B,D)

We spend the day in Coober Pedy today, one of Australia’s most multi-cultural towns and a fascinating place to explore. Coober Pedy mines over 92% of Australian opals and you have a chance to buy your very own opal or two today during our town tour, when you will also find out more about the unique practice of opal mining. In the late afternoon we travel to the breakaways for pre-dinner drinks and nibbles whilst watching a magical sunset. (B)

We travel to Marla, Mt Conner and Lake Amadeus along the way to  the 1-million acre cattle property at Curtin Springs, our accommodation for the next three nights. (B,D)

Today is all about the “Rock” and the “Olgas”.  We enjoy a very information tour with a local guide, and have the opportunity to explore the area, and visit the Cultural Centre . You may also fly over both attractions (own expense), before heading back to the “Rock” for a BBQ dinner and a spectacular sunset in the evening. (B,D)

Today, we continue our journey to Kings Canyon in the Watarrka National Park, which sits at the western end of the George Gill Range. We take a walk into the Gorge, marvelling at its breathtaking 100m high walls. Later we return to our accommodation at Curtin Springs. (B,D) Note: Helicopter flight opportunity over Watarrka National Park (own expense) .

On to Alice Springs where we visit the historic Telegraph Station and Anzac Hill Lookout before a visit to the stunning Simpson’s Gap, returning via Honeymoon Gap.  We settle into our accommodation then enjoy drinks and nibbles before dinner at the nearby Range View Restaurant. (B)

Today we visit the amazing Ormiston Gorge known for its sheer quartzite cliffs, red river gums and sandy creek bed. Several waterholes attract native wildlife and provide a beautiful setting for visitors. After we visit the beautiful Ellery Creek Big Hole, which contains some of the most dramatic and beautiful countryside in the West MacDonnell Ranges. We return to Alice in the afternoon. (B,D)

Today we travel north towards Aileron, Barrow Creek, stopping at the interesting Karlu-Karlu (Devils Marbles), where you’ll have time to walk around these precariously balanced boulders. We end the day at Tennant Creek, an old gold mining town along the Stuart Highway. (B,D)

Still travelling north, we visit the eccentric Daly Waters Historic Pub for a refreshing beer at lunch time. We continue to Mataranka, ‘Land of the Never Never’. At Mataranka you can visit the replica of the original Elsey Homestead, used in the filming of ‘We of the Never Never’, an autobiographical film about Jeannie Gunn’s life in the outback. Or, you may take the palm lined walkway for a swim in the famous thermal springs. Later it’s on to Katherine. (B)

A serene early morning cruise through Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park. Discover the cultural significance of the first two gorges to the traditional landowners, the Jawoyn people and keep an eye out for the resident crocodiles. Travelling south on the Stuart Hwy today, we stop at Adelaide River’s poignant War Cemetery and the famous Adelaide River pub for lunch.  Later in the afternoon we arrive in Darwin, which sits on the bay of the Timor Sea. (B, D)

Today we explore Darwin. We visit the Darwin Military Museum, stroll through the Darwin Botanic Gardens, and enjoy free time in the city before an afternoon sunset dinner cruise on Darwin Harbour. (B,D)

Your holiday concludes this morning after breakfast. You will be transferred to Darwin Airport to connect with your onward flight home, after a wonderful tour of South Australia and the Northern territory, after enjoying some of the sites of our amazing country! (B)

Day 2 Adelaide - Flinders Ranges

One of Australia’s oldest wine regions, the Clare Valley is all rounded hills, rippling vines and native forest. It’s the postcard-perfect setting for historic Knappstein Enterprise Winery, producing sweet-scented rieslings and mineral-rich reds. The route north lands you at Hawker, the gateway to the Flinders Ranges, but there are plenty of reasons to linger, including well-preserved heritage buildings and the Jeff Morgan Gallery. The best is yet to come, as you arrive at Wilpena Pound Resort in the shadows of a staggering natural amphitheatre. Know that your MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience visit to the resort helps by contributing towards the sustainable economic future of the Adnyamathanha who in turn work with the resort to minimize the environmental footprint and participate in the conservation of the region.

Day 3 Flinders Ranges - Port Augusta

The river red gums that envelop Hills Homestead will leave you lost for words. You get here on a leisurely walk along Wilpena Creek and continue to Wangarra Hill Lookout for views over the pound’s peaks and curves. The drama is echoed as you climb to Pichi Richi Pass and the historic town of Quorn, where with a Local Guide, you'll hear the importance of this town in the ANZAC's Gallipoli Campaign, before easing into Port Augusta.

Day 4 Port Augusta - Coober Pedy

The main attraction in Woomera is a former rocket-testing site, today stocked with disused rockets and missiles. Speaking of space, you’ll think you’ve landed on the moon as you travel through sun-baked country to Coober Pedy, known as ‘the opal capital of the world’. Things get deep as you travel underground to visit the town’s head-scratching subterranean facilities.

Day 5 Coober Pedy - Uluru

Emerge from your cave and cross the border into the Northern Territory. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park has World Heritage status for a reason; under the gaze of the world’s mightiest monolith, toast the end of the day with a glass of bubbles and a camera full of sunset photos. Help protect the highlights of Australia's wilderness through your bucket list visit to Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park.

Day 6 Uluru Sunrise & Kata Tjuta

Pre-dawn wake-up calls are worth it when you get to enjoy a Red Centre sunrise. On this MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience you’ll encounter the iconic Uluru, or ‘The Rock,’ half a billion years old, standing 348 meters high and taller than the Eiffel Tower. Marvel at the majesty of Ulu r u as you circumnavigate its base or join a guided walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole. This landscape takes you back to the beginning of time, a sacred place among the Anangu people. More soul-salving landscapes await at Kata Tjuta, cool relief provided as you walk amid its domes to Walpa Gorge.

Day 7 Uluru - Kings Canyon

Another sunrise excursion awaits, with this morning’s optional tour to Bruce Munro's Uluru Field of Light – a blanket of 50,000 glowing bulbs. Next chance to stretch your legs is at Kings Creek Station, the largest exporter of wild camels in Australia. All your senses will be activated at Kings Canyon, 440-million years in the making.

Day 8 Kings Canyon - Alice Springs

Things are bigger in the NT outback, from the cattle stations to the MacDonnell Ranges, which stretch like a dinosaur spine toward Alice Springs. Aside from its plethora of Aboriginal galleries and art stores, Alice makes Australian history for her 1872 Telegraph Station, one of 12 along the Overland Telegraph Line between Adelaide and Darwin.

Day 9 Alice Springs

Aboriginal culture is strong in Alice, as you’ll fast find on a tour revealing the history of the Arrernte people at the Alice Springs Desert Park. The other thing that’s mighty is community spirit – it’s essential when there are so few people scattered over such a vast area of land. Enter the Royal Flying Doctor Service, its base a museum that goes behind the scenes of the life-saving health services delivered to people in remote realms. One of the benefits of being this far-flung is the lack of light pollution. And at Earth Sanctuary World Nature Centre, this equates to epic stargazing. Your Be My Guest BBQ dinner here with the Falzon family is enlightening and uplifting.

Day 10 Alice Springs - Tennant Creek

1.3 million square kilometers – that’s the eye-watering distance the School of Air’s lessons are broadcast across daily. Learn how teachers interact with children who would otherwise have no access to education. It doesn’t matter how studious you are, you might just believe in aliens when you pass Wycliffe Well, the self-proclaimed ‘UFO capital’ of Australia. It’s the devil (well, his marbles) that awaits at Karlu Karlu, where precariously balanced boulders appear superglued together.

Day 11 Tennant Creek - Katherine

Since the 1930s, the Daly Waters Historic Pub has been dishing up schnitzels, barramundi burgers and hearty steaks. The walls are lined with treasures that passers-by leave behind. ‘Land of the Never Never’ awaits at Mataranka. Visit a replica of the Elsey Homestead, used in 1982 Aussie drama We of the Never Never. Or wander palm-lined walkways to take a dip in the region’s thermal springs.

Day 12 Katherine - Kakadu

The Jawoyn have called Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge home for millennia. You can feel their presence as you cruise the waterway, home to more than a few resident crocs. They’ll make another appearance in Kakadu, when you explore Yellow Water Billabong. You don’t need binoculars to spot the sea eagles, brolgas and kingfishers; they’re everywhere you look.

Day 13 Kakadu - Darwin

Decisions, decisions: optional morning flight over Kakadu and Arnhem Land, or a sleep in. We vote for the former before you venture toward Ubirr and its ancient Aboriginal rock art. The night is yours in steamy Darwin, where the characters are as large as the shadows cast at sunset.

Day 14 Litchfield National Park

Nature rules today, your explorations into Litchfield National Park revealing magnetic termite mounds standing two metres tall. And then there are the waterfalls: Florence, for its dreamy cascades, and Wangi, where you can cool off in a crystal-clear waterhole (swimming is seasonal). See the NT capital in a new light when you venture out on a Darwin Harbour Cruise, your sparkling wine glass full to toast your last evening on this epic adventure.

Day 15 Farewell from Darwin

Time to bid adieu and head home to sort through all those photos. Even better are the memories; two weeks of wild outback adventures.

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

After a meet and greet, visit the Cultural Centre in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to soak up its mesmerising natural beauty and rich culture.

Uluru and Kata Tjuta both hold great spiritual significance as they are places where many creation stories converge. Many of these stories are kept secret from outsiders, but you’ll learn a little about the local Anangu culture and appreciate the beauty of their land through exhibits and free presentations with Anangu and park rangers.

After setting up camp this evening, head to a viewing platform to experience the famous changing colours of the magical Uluru at sunset. This is a great time to contemplate the vastness of the desert. Tonight, get to know your fellow travellers over our first campfire dinner and roll out your Aussie swag for the first time underneath a sky full of sparkling stars.

This morning, we depart Yulara and make our way towards Watarrka National Park and Kings Canyon.

But first, it’s time for another untamed moment as Kata Tjuta materialises before you. Rising 546 metres above the ground, this sacred site is a defining feature of the Red Centre.

Translating to the Pitjantjatjara word for ‘Many Heads’, the site’s ridges and ravines are closely connected with numerous Indigenous creation-time stories.

Embark on the Valley of the Winds guided walk for a moment in nature you will never forget. A sanctuary for plants and animals, including wallabies and gorgeous wildflowers, we’ll wander along the narrow creek valley between two of Kata Tjuta’s largest domes.

After a lunch stop, travel to Kings Creek, where we will enjoy the one-hour Karrke Aboriginal Cultural Experience.

Learn about areas of importance for the Luritja and Pertame (Southern Arrernte) people as they share stories about bush tucker and art.

This afternoon, arrive at our camp at Kings Creek Station and enjoy some chill time before dinner at your leisure.

Today you will cover about 325kms.

Overnight: Swag camping at Kings Creek Station Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

It’s an early start this morning for the spellbinding Kings Canyon Rim Walk, which is guaranteed to be one of the most magical experiences of your life.

With its 300-metre-high sandstone walls, hidden waterholes, fern forests, chasms, canyons and caverns, Watarrka National Park is central Australia’s answer to an oasis. Take in the 360-degree views and journey through Priscilla’s Crack, made famous by the classic Australian movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

From there, see the sandstone domes known as the Lost City and the lush greenery and watering hole of the aptly named Garden of Eden.

Rest your legs and settle in for a long drive today as we travel across the Northern Territory and South Australian border. There are plenty of stops along the way before we arrive in Coober Pedy, ‘The Opal Capital of the World’. Due to scorching temperatures, most of the town is underground, with residents living in cave-like houses carved into the hillsides.

Tonight, you will stay in a unique underground bunkhouse and have some free time to explore and grab dinner at one of the many eateries. It’s big numbers today, covering approximately 760km.

Overnight: Umoona Opal Mine – underground bunk, multi-share Meals included: Breakfast

adelaide to darwin coach tours

After breakfast, spend time with some rescued joeys at Josephine’s Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage.

Established in 2008 to take in orphaned kangaroos from the far north of South Australia, it is about the size of Germany! It just so happens the gallery here is a world-class Aboriginal Art Gallery with an extensive range of Aboriginal artefacts and significant works by many of Australia’s best-known Indigenous artists.

Have some time to browse before our next stop at the Umoona Opal Mine and Museum. Here you will learn about Aboriginal and European settlement, see how the early miners lived, and try your hand at ‘noodling’ for opals.

Next, travel into areas seldom seen by most tourists as we leave the sealed roads of the Stuart Highway behind us and travel on unsealed roads to one of the remotest towns in the world, William Creek.

On the way, travel through the largest cattle station in the world, Anna Creek. Gaze out at the endless horizons as we pass by the lake with the longest name in the world, Lake Cadibarrawirracanna.

Arriving in town, set up camp and have a hearty counter meal at the heritage-listed William Creek Hotel.

Fall asleep as you count shooting stars snuggled up in your swag.

Today we travel approximately 170km.

Overnight: Swag camping at William Creek Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

*Note: The Oodnadatta Track is an unsealed dirt road, and the conditions of the track depend heavily on the weather. If the road is deemed unsafe to drive on, or there is a possibility that sections of the road will close after we have commenced driving on the track, our Guide reserves the right to alter the itinerary and take a different route.

Today, continue off the beaten path and travelling along a section of one of Australia’s most iconic unsealed roads, the Oodnadatta Track.

Drive through eerie lunar-like landscapes and, along the way, uncover highlights such as the mind-bending Mutonia Sculpture Park and Lake Eyre, Australia’s largest salt lake.

Grab lunch at one of the quirky outback towns along the way before we arrive at Skytrek Willow Springs Station in the magnificent Flinders Ranges. This 70,000-acre working sheep station features secluded bush camping, walking trails, natural springs and Aboriginal rock etchings.

The Flinders Ranges is famed as having some of the Southern Hemisphere’s clearest skies. So, for the next two nights, enjoy front-row seats to one of Earth’s most spectacular light shows.

After a campfire dinner, roll out your swag under a sea of stars blanketing the ancient landscape and spend the evening marvelling at the Milky Way and counting constellations.

Today we drive approximately 500km.

Overnight: Swag camping at Skytrek Willow Springs Station Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

So, pull on your hiking boots for a hike through tall river red gums and pines, past waterholes and a historic ruined homestead, culminating with breathtaking views over the surrounding wilderness.

Regeneration is at our core, so meet with a Park Ranger to learn about conservation efforts within Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Then, give back by participating in meaningful conservation work, which will vary depending on the time of year.

After a picnic lunch, take a beautiful scenic drive at Brachina Gorge.

Finally, head back to camp to relax and have our final dinner together.

The total driving distance today is approximately 160km.

Overnight: Swag camping at Skytrek Willow Springs Station Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After our final breakfast together, it’s time to roll up your swag one last time and set out on the Arkaroo Rock Trail, which has impressive views over the Chace Range.

Enjoy a picnic lunch before travelling to Alligator Gorge in the Southern Flinders Ranges. Located in Mount Remarkable National Park, this is the perfect way to end the tour.

Our last stint on the road will see us travel through the picturesque Clare Valley wine region before arriving in Adelaide at around 6 pm.

Due to its high walls, you are normally discouraged to leave the walking tracks. As you hike along the tracks you can view the great majestic canyons. There are three walk tracks which you can follow as per your own ease and convenience. These are:

  • The two km walk loop is around an hour walk. It terraces the bottoms of the canyon and at the end, it reached to a platform from where you can view the canyon walls from above.
  • The six km walk traces the top of the canyon. The walk starts with a steep slope in the begging which is heart-pounding experience. It takes the tourist to the top of the canyon and thus gives an opportunity to view the canyon from above. Around half the way the tracks takes descend and leads to a waterfall. This waterfall is surrounded by plant life and is called the Garden of Eden.
  • The ultimate adventurers can take the 22 km long Giles Track. It connects the Kings Canyon to the Kathleen Springs.

A variety of the birds can be viewed from around the Canyon. After spending an adventurous day at the canyon the next thing is a warm cozy place to spend the night. We set up camp at the Uluru Kata Tjuta Aboriginal Cultural Center quickly before learning about local Aboriginal History.

Day 7 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Uluru / Ayers Rock

Your next stop is Uluru / Ayers Rock which is a large sandstone rock formation and a major Australian tourist attraction. The first Australian here are from the Pitjantjatjara   Anangu people. The area around this is webbed with the springs, waterholes, rock caves some paintings.

Both Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta have great cultural significance for the Anangu traditional landowners. Self discover about the local flora and fauna, bush foods and the Aboriginal Dream time stories of the area.

KataTuja also is known as Tholga lies around 25 km west of Uluru. The tourism in the area is supported in every way but the only downside is that the people are banned from climbing up to the Kata Tuja. Embrace the domes of Kata-Tjuta on your walk, while taking in the views of the open plains on the return walk.

Walpa Gorge

Sprawling out in an awe-inspiring horizon of jutting peaks and dipping valleys, Walpa Gorge is a bastion of natural beauty set amongst the beautiful Kata-Tjuta National Park. Stand at the edge of the world, breathe in the aromatic wilderness, and soak up the vast, incredible plains

Its sheer immensity dwarfs everything around it. Uluru (Ayers Rock) has acquired its reputation not just because it is such a unique landform, but also because of the effect the sun has on its colours and appearance. Sunrises and Sunsets cause changes to its colour from browns though oranges, reds to finally grey.

We start the day at dawn with a walk around Uluru’s base which takes about 3 1⁄2 hours. Walking through acacia woods and grassy clay pans, you’ll spot wildlife in waterholes, marvel at Uluru’s geological wonders, and learn more from your culturally accredited Groovy guide about Aboriginal interpretations. We relax on our campground later.

Uluru – Mutitjulu Waterhole

We drive from the front of Uluru around to the Kuniya car park, which is at the back of Uluru. From here you start your second Uluru guided walk to the Mutitjulu Waterhole. The guide will share stories of local traditions and explain how the Anangu people traditionally used the waterhole for hunting. The caves containing rock art were used in the past by Anangu still alive today.

Moreover, once you get to the area don’t take pictures of everything you see. There are few areas restricted from being photographed. These areas have a direct linkage with the religious beliefs of the locals. There are a lot of places to stay near the Ayers Rock however some good places are Ayers Rock Resort Campground &  Outback Pioneer Hotel. Some good bars to refresh yourself after a long day, try visiting the Mangata Bistro & Bar or the Pira pool bar.

Day 8 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

The locals- Arrernte

Alice Springs is roughly the geographic centre of Australia it’s the most sort after places by travelers. It is a desert terrain inhibited by its locals known as the Arrernte. Here you would be guided by your local guide for learning the unique flora and fauna of the Aussie desert.

What to see

Listen to the local Warumungu people’s legend of’ Nyinkka’ at the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre, the spiky tailed goanna that shaped the city. This centre is considered to be one of the best in the territory and includes a gallery of regional indigenous art, cafe, and opportunities to learn more about Aboriginal life & history. Visit The Pebbles, a spectacular granite formation north of the city known to the Warumungu people as Kunjarra, the sacred women’s dancing site.

Just north of Alice Springs is the Tropic of Capricorn. Further along the track are the Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu), a collection of magically balanced, gigantic rock formations. Our day will close at the historic Banka Banka Cattle Station, where we camp for the night. The historic cattle station was this region’s first pastoral operational lease and a World War II supply camp that provided meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables. The Ward family occupied and ran it and is still the site of a mudbrick homestead.

Day 11 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Banka Banka to Mataranka

On this Adelaide, to Darwin overland tour you need to make a visit to the Daly Waters Pub , an important watering hole for explorers and drivers in days gone by and now a great spot for a cold beer, a bit of history and a’ fair dinkum outback experience!’ You can soak up in the Mataranka Thermal Pools later in the day, a lush oasis surrounded by paperbark trees before heading to Katherine. The hot springs of Mataranka provides visitors with the perfect place to relax and soak up along the captivating scenery.

Mataranka Pools

The natural pool waters here are blue, but they also have the power to heal aches and pains–ideal if you have spent the day walking and exploring the surrounding area. Palm forests around the hot springs offer a paradise backdrop, while in the distance you can hear the gentle gush of nearby waterfalls. There are plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities to have here as well, as the red flying fox Stay overnight at the Bitter Springs Cabins and Camping or the Mataranka Cabins and Camping .

Day 12 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Katherine

The next day we move onto the Katherine River which has carved ancient sandstone to create a deep, picturesque gorge. Hire a canoe and paddle along the gorges to see waterfalls, Aboriginal rock art and wildlife. Board a sunrise cruise or speedboat and enjoy the ride

Explore Nitmiluk National Park which offers many ways to experience its gorge like swimming between pure cliffs to camp on sandy freshwater beaches, or jump to the ultimate view of the 13-gorge system in a clear-nosed helicopter.

Paraway Motel and Beagle Motor Inn is a good location for travelers to spend the night. And if you are looking for pubs to have a good drink try The Stuart Hotel which has a beer or the Savannah Bar & Restaurant (Knotts Crossing Resort)

Day 13 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Kakadu National Park

Your tour towards Darwin would not be complete without having the sight of the crocodiles basking in the mud and a variety of wildlife enjoying their own habitat. This is the park the route of which leads from Katherine George in the Nitmuilk National Park. The park is based on four major rivers the East Alligator River, the West Alligator River, the Wildman River & the entire South Alligator River.

This region is home to over 250 species of birds and has the Southern Hemisphere’s highest concentration of saltwater crocodiles. Look for the powerful crocs that rule this waterway, buffalo, birds and other wildlife. At the South Alligator River, our entrance to Kakadu National Park is a picturesque location for a picnic lunch.

Before our late afternoon arrival in Ubirr, there is an opportunity to buy Aboriginal arts and crafts at the Bowali Visitor Centre. Here you’ll see a wide range of ancient Aboriginal art that your guide will interpret. Learn the Rainbow Serpent story and climb the Nadab Lookout to Arnhem Land for panoramic views across the floodplain and beyond. Besides being a hub of natural habitat to numerous species, the area also has a diverse mining history.

Your Adelaide to Darwin coach tour is not complete without a climb to a rocky outlook with views across the floodplains on the moderately steep 250-meter track. Time your visit from the top for a spectacular, unforgettable tropical sunset. At Ubirr, there are three main rock art sites to experience. It takes about an hour to walk to Ubirr and is 1 kilometre from the car park via a circular walking track and it takes another 30 minutes to climb to the lookout.

Twin Falls Gorge

Twin Falls Gorge is a gorge of amazing beauty. The Twin Falls are also one of Kakadu National Park’s most famous sites, a place most visitors think about when visiting Kakadu. The shuttle takes you through the gorge, dropping you near the falls. You have to walk from there for about two minutes, over a few rocks and then over a boardwalk. You end up in a large pool at the bottom of the falls with a sandy beach.

Yellow Water Billabong

Get out on the Yellow Water as part of a cruise on a boat for a closer look at a rich wildlife variety. Jacana, egrets, jabiru, sea eagles, magpie geese and many other native species are among the vast range of resident birdlife. The billabong’s surface is dotted with lovely pink and white water lilies. Take the walk across the floodplains to a viewing platform at Home Billabong when the waters recede-a great place to enjoy an unforgettable sunset at the top end.

After all the excitement if you are looking for a drink try the Pine Creek or the Corroboree Park Tavern . There are some good places to stay over during the night like the Kakadu Lodge , Anbinik Kakadu resort or the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel.

Day 14 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Litchfield National Park to Darwin

Today is spent exploring Litchfield National Park’s waterfalls, spring-fed streams, and rough sandstone escarpments. Marvel at the intriguing termite mounds and then swim, hike and explore Florence and Wangi Falls. Discover Buley Rockhole’s with many of its rock holes and cascading waterfalls before our return to Darwin.

Your trip would finally end once you enter the capital city of the northern territory situated on the Timor Sea. It would also be the end of the Stuart Highway on which you would have travelled such a great distance. The Darwin city serves as a gateway for the East Asian markets and countries to Australia. It would not be wrong to call it the metropolitan city of the country.  The city has two main beaches which are the Casuarina Beach and Mindil Beach.

End your tour on a high note with a drink at the Shenannigans or at the Monsoons Darwin . After that you enjoy your planned stay at the Darwin YHA – Melaleuca On Mitchell or at The Cavenagh Hotel . Reviews of this tour....

Train Trip

Jenny and Andrew Bogema

Thank you for the welcome home and thank you for all the effort you put into organising all the booking, particularly as, due to covid, you had to do it twice with very little extra cost to us. It was a great trip, I enjoyed every minute of it. What an amazing and beautiful country we live in! I will get around to filling in your feedback form, sorry it is taking a while, but it has been a busy time catching up with things back home.

We did make it out to the Painted Desert which was amazing and I'm sure it would be even more amazing at sunset or sunrise. The West McDonald Range tour was excellent and we really enjoyed the Katherine Gorge. I guess the 2 highlights of the trip would have to be (not surprisingly): Uluru, Kata Tjuta national park, including the Tali Wiru dinner, and The Ghan.

Once again many thanks for a great adventure,

Kind regards,

Jenny and Andrew Bogema - NSW Australia
