17 Best Things to Do in Hopkins, Belize – Heart of the Garifuna Culture

Posted on April 12, 2023 | Julie J. |

Last Updated on April 14, 2023

Hopkins, in Belize, is a small fishing village at the heart of the Garifuna culture. Slow-paced and peaceful, Hopkins is a great place to relax for a few days, enjoy the beach, and discover the Garifuna lifestyle.

The Garifuna is an ethnic group descending from Africans and Indians from the Caribbean, present in Belize and Central America. Their language, food, dance, and music are important aspects of the culture, and staying in Hopkins, you’ll get a glimpse.

Keep on reading to discover all the best things to do in Hopkins, Belize , how to get there, where to eat, and where to stay.

Travel tips: I recommend renting a car in Belize City before heading to Hopkins so you don’t have to book a tour every time you want to visit something . The main roads are great, but note that most places you’ll want to visit will require a 4W to get there . This is the website I use to find the best car rental deals.

If there are 3 things you need to pack for Belize , it would be water shoes , reef-safe sunscreen , and mosquito repellent.

Things to Know Before Visiting Hopkins

There’s only one backpacker in Hopkins village, the Funky Dodo hostel , if you’re solo traveling, I’ll advise staying there as it can get pretty lonely otherwise.

Hopkins Beach is far from being the prettiest in Belize, it can get pretty dirty. If you’re staying at one of the expensive resort, their beach should be nice though.

In my opinion, the only reason to visit Hopkins is if you’re interested in the Garifuna culture . The best would be to be there during a festival or some kind of celebration so you can really enjoy your time in the village. Like on November 19th, during the festivities to celebrate the Garifuna Settlement Day.

Using local plants, this small shop offers tons of different natural remedies as well as tea and coffee. Using their knowledge of plants and their properties, the owners keep alive an ancestral practice of healing with traditional medicines.

Take a cultural tour

Probably the best way to discover most of the cultural aspects, especially if you just have a day. You’ll usually get a cooking class, a drumming session, and see cultural artifacts and handicrafts. You can find several companies offering this tour in Hopkins.

The Lodge at Jaguar Reef

The Lodge at Jaguar Reef often organizes Garifuna nights, where you can see firsthand a traditional Garifuna show with music, singing, and dancing. They also organize classes if you want to learn.

Garifuna dancers

Lebeha Drumming Center

Located on the northern side of town, the Lebeha Drumming Center organizes regular drumming and dancing classes.

Driftwood Beach Bar

Every Tuesday night, a Garifuna band comes and plays traditional music at Driftwood Beach Bar . Because Hopkins is not that touristy, it’s authentic; you’ll see many locals dancing and enjoying the music.

Other Things to do in Hopkins and Day Trips

Cycle to sittee river.

You can rent a bicycle for the day and ride along the coast, then along the river to Sittee River. Sittee River, a small village, in itself, is nothing special but the road leading there is worth going to.

Take a Day Trip to Thatch Caye

Spend the day snorkeling, paddle boarding, and relaxing on the beach at this beautiful private island off the coast of Belize. The resort there offers spa treatments, a restaurant and bar, and a pool.

Click here to book an all-included tour to Thatch Cay from Hopkins with transportation, fees, water craft rentals, and lunch included.

Snorkel the Nearby Reef

Reef, fish

The nearby UNESCO-listed Belize barrier reef makes Hopkins a great place to go diving or snorkeling. Some parts of the reef are not that deep and the water is really clear, so you can see a lot just snorkeling.

Take a boat trip to a marine reserve to snorkel through a beautiful coral garden and swim among colorful fish.

Get your Adrenaline Pumping at Bocawina National Park

Ziplining through the rainforest

The Mayflower Bocawina National Park is a stunning protected area located in the Stann Creek District of Belize offering plenty of outdoor activities.

The park is home to a range of wildlife and offers a variety of activities, including hiking, birdwatching, and waterfall rappelling . The park has several hiking trails , including the Antelope Trail and the Bocawina Falls Trail , which takes you to a beautiful waterfall that you can rappel down.

The park also has a zipline course and offers guided tours of the area.

You can explore the easy trails on your own and book activities once you get to the park (check out this Waterfall Rappelling & Zipline Combo ), you can book a tour from Hopkins that includes transportation, or hire a private driver for the day.

Cave Tubing and Ziplining at Jaguar Paw

Enjoy a relaxing river tubing experience through Belize’s Jaguar Paw Cave while admiring the subterranean world before soaring above the canopy on a ziplining adventure.

Join this small group and spend a day in the heart of the rainforest.

Rappel Down Actun Loch Tunich

Adrenaline junkies will love going on this unique adventure in the heart of the Belizean jungle.

Initially formed from a sinkhole, the Actun Loch Tunich, also known as the Mother of All Caves, is a 300 ft deep hole covered by vegetation .

The tour starts by a hike, then you rappel down, have lunch at the bottom, and hike back.

Go on a Bioluminescence Tour and Sunset River Cruise

Head to the Anderson Lagoon to first watch the sunset, and when it’s dark, see bioluminescent plankton light up the water.

This tour will take you into the mangroves by boat, where you’ll get to see this enchanting natural phenomenon up close and personal. Put your hand in the water and see how the plankton immediately starts lighting up.

It’s also a great experience for stargazing.

Look for Jaguars at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

River and jungle in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize

Cockscomb is the perfect place to go hiking. Spotting of jaguars is not uncommon, but it’s still a long shot. Jaguars are not the only animals present in the park, you might see pumas and ocelots as well as several species of reptiles and birds.

A day trip to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary from Hopkins is a great way to experience the natural beauty of Belize and get up close and personal with its wildlife.

Another great activity to do there is river tubing, sliding along the water, surrounded by a lush jungle.

You can go on your own if you have a car, the drive takes about an hour and a half, and the road can be bumpy, so it’s best to have a 4W . Once there you’ll need to pay an entrance fee to enter the reserve. The fee is around $10 USD per person and goes towards the conservation efforts of the reserve.

You can then hike on the many trails in the reserve and take a refreshing dip in the waterfall pools. There are also guided tours available, where you can learn more about the flora and fauna of the area.

If you don’t a car, it’s recommended to take a tour from Hopkins. The Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary tour will take you hiking through the jungle to a hidden cascade and then ride natural river waterslides and i nner tubes down the South Stann Creek River . It’s a full-day trip with everything included – click here to book it.

Make sure to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes. It’s also a good idea to bring snacks and water, as there are no restaurants or food vendors inside the reserve.

Hiking to Davis Falls

Davis Falls, a 500-foot-high waterfall, is Belize’s second-highest fall. Located deep inside the rainforest, few make the trip there. All the more reward for you if you decide to visit this gorgeous fall.

If you go on your own, head to the village of Alta Vista where you can hire a guide, from there, you’ll need to drive around 8 more miles on a dirt road. The walk to the falls is about 2 miles and takes around 30 minutes.

Once you reach Davis Falls, you can swim in the waterfall pool, explore the surrounding jungle, and even climb up to the top of the waterfall if you’re feeling adventurous.

If you want to book a tour, you’ll find several operators in Hopkins offering the tour.

Swimming at Saint Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

St Herman's Blue Hole, Belize

This open-air cenote is a great way to spend a couple of hours, swimming in the cool waters. It’s also one of the rare places in Belize you can reach easily; it’s located just off the Hummingbird Highway.

During the low season, you might have the place all to yourself. There’s also a cave only 2 kilometers away, you can enter it without a guide if you don’t want to wander too deep inside the cave. Another option is to hire a guide (50 US per person), to go about 2 km deep inside the cave and then come back to the entrance river-tubing.

Explore the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

Xunantunich, Maya ruins, San Ignacio, Belize

Xunantunich is an ancient Mayan ruin site located in western Belize, near the border with Guatemala, and if you’re not planning on visiting San Ignacio , you should consider going on a tour to the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins from Hopkins.

It was an important Mayan city during the classical period (AD 250-900) and was abandoned in the 10th century. The site was rediscovered in the 19th century and has been partially restored since then.

The site features several large pyramids , including El Castillo, which is the second tallest structure in Belize. You can climb to the top of El Castillo for a stunning view of the surrounding area. The site also features several plazas, ball courts, and other ceremonial structures.

Most tours from Hopkins will offer a second activity like this Xunantunich and Inland Blue Hole Tour or this Xunantunich Mayan Ruin and Cave Tubing .

Visit the Famed ATM Cave

ATM Cave, Belize

Another great place to visit from Hopkins if you’re not going to San Ignacio is the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave, one of the most known landmarks in Belize .

The ATM Cave was used by the ancient Mayans for both ceremonial and human sacrifice purposes , and many artifacts from the site are still preserved inside the cave. You will have the opportunity to see these artifacts and learn about the Mayan culture and beliefs.

The tour involves hiking, swimming, and wading through water, as well as climbing and squeezing through tight spaces , so be sure you’re up for it.

The number of people allowed daily is limited so make sure to book a tour in advance (you can’t get in without a guide).

Click here to book your Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave Tour from Hopkins!

Where to eat in Hopkins

Food

If you want something nice on the beach, you can check out Maxim’s . It’s also an excellent place to have a drink.

For budget options, Siomara’s is a good choice, they offer local, copious meals. If you want to try Garifuna cuisine, head to Tugusina Garifuna restaurant.

For coffee, check out Kat’s Coffee , their coffee is great and they offer succulent food (granola bowls, waffles, panini, wraps…)

How to get to Hopkins, Belize

There are a couple of direct buses from Dangriga from Monday to Saturday (way fewer on Sundays).

Otherwise, you can catch any bus on the Belize City-Punta Gorda line and ask to be dropped off at the intersection. From there, you can hitchhike or take a shared taxi ($5 BZ).

Beach and palmtrees in Hopkins, Belize

Note for Solo Females Traveling to Hopkins

The catcalling in Hopkins was the worst I had in my four weeks traveling in Belize. Every 10 meters, there’s a man ready to make a comment on your looks or think it’s okay to say “Hi baby” or things like this. It’s super annoying, at one point I just gave up walking around the village and just headed back to the hotel.

Where to stay in Hopkins, Belize

  • The Funky Dodo Backpackers Hostel: The only hostel in Hopkins, a great place to meet people, good wifi, shared kitchen, near the bus stop;
  • Cosmopolitan Guesthouse Affordable, clean and comfy rooms with a private bathroom, outdoor pool and free bikes.
  • All Seasons Guest House: Nice mid-range guest house with AC, wifi and a kitchen guests can use;
  • Coconut Row: (high-end) beachfront hotel with rooms, bungalows, and apartments, they have a bar/restaurant, AC, and good wifi.

There are cheaper guesthouses in Hopkins but they’re not online, you’ll just have to ask around when you get to the village.

There is so much to do in this vibrant country, and the small, unobtrusive town of Hopkins, Belize may make for the perfect base for your visit or at least a stop for a night or two.

I won’t lie to you, there’s really not much to do IN Hopkins! BUT this can still be a great and relaxing spot to base for some great adventures nearby. Here are the few things to actually do in town while you’re here…

Hopkins Beach is so beautiful; there is no judgment here if all you want to do for the extent of your visit is laze on the sands. You will struggle to find a more picturesque spot to lay down a towel.

A woman enjoying on of the many Hopkins Beaches.

The beach is vast, unspoiled, and rarely crowded, so you will always find a spot for yourself, unlike some other Belize beaches . The swaying palm trees offer ample shade, and the views of the Maya Mountains are just the cherry on top.

As mentioned, Hopkins Belize is rich in culture, and there is no better way to immerse yourself in this culture than to take a drumming workshop. Professional Garifuna drummers run workshops at the Lebeha Center . Even if you feel like you don’t have any rhythm, we assure you the session will at least get your feet tapping. You will have a hard time staying still!

A person playing a traditional instrument of the Garifuna culture.

If you don’t want to take part yourself, that’s completely fine too. Many people prefer to simply sip their drinks and watch the students practice. Once you’ve enjoyed the drumming, spend some time exploring the many other bars around town that offer drinks and a place to relax or party, depending on your mood!

This is really one of the main things to do in Hopkins, Belize and luckily, there are some great spots to have some delicious meals and good drinks—Most right on the beach! (As a PS – I literally didn’t have a bad meal in Belize—at all! And Hopkins was no exception)

  • Semiti Giffiti – I don’t think you can get any more local than this spot! This place is nothing more than a small shack on the beach with a few tables, and it doesn’t even have a menu. The sweet woman running this spot makes what is fresh or what she feels like that day, although hudut is often on the menu. A traditional dish consisting of fish cooked in a coconut broth served with yams. Definitely order this if she is serving it up.

  • Queen Bean – This spot is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they are serving delicious hot and traditional food along with rasta vibes. They have everything from fluffy pancakes to perfectly fried fish, all while you listen to the waves lapping on the shore.
  • The Coconut Husk Restaurant & Beach Bar – This is another delightful spot on the beach to grab a bite for breakfast or lunch. The fry jacks are perfectly puffed, the coffee is excellent, and they have mega-friendly staff. This was our go-to breakfast joint! (They have cute cabanas to stay in too)
  • Nice Cream Hopkins – It might not be the best ice cream you’ve had in your life, but you’ll probably think so while eating it as it will be cooling you down from the brutal heat. Don’t melt while you’re here! Just grab some ice cream and keep on going.

Fresh ice cream from the local gelato store.

  • Rhum Shack – This is a restaurant with a Caribbean flair that’s attached to a resort but open for anyone to join and dine. Located at the end of the beach, it’s a serene spot to grab some food while your toes dig into the sand. They are serving up everything from land and sea and have some serious cocktails being shaken up here too.

Day Trips From Hopkins

As you’ve gathered by now, this is a quiet beach town, and there aren’t many things to do in Hopkins, Belize. But considering its prime location, you’ll find yourself with tons of things to do just outside of Hopkins.

So grab your rental car and explore, OR just book some of these tours listed below that depart from Hopkins to explore things to do in Belize that are a bit further.

Get off the beaten track and away from the tourist crowd on this tour to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Reserve . The waterfall chaser within you will be satisfied with the cascades on this venture, as you’ll start with a trek to a hidden waterfall accompanied by a knowledgeable guide.

The best part of the trip has to be riding the natural water slides and relaxing on inner tubes as you float down the South Stand Creek River.

A delicious picnic lunch is included with an unbeatable backdrop, and if you are fortunate, you may be able to spot some of the wildlife that calls the sanctuary their home. The wildlife preserve is in place to protect some of the country’s endangered species.

Hidden in the trees is a menagerie of animals, including the revered jaguars. The reserve is home to the country’s largest number of these majestic cats, but we will be honest, your chance of spotting these crafty camouflagers is next to none.

Tiger Fern Waterfalls in Cockscomb Basin one of the best waterfalls in Belize.

You might have a better chance of spotting pumas, ocelots, jaguarundi, tapirs, armadillos, otters, and monkeys that live in the jungle, and that’s before even mentioning the hundreds of bird species!

You may have been tubing before, but have you ever been tubing in a pitch-black cave? We didn’t think so! This tour allows you to immerse yourself under the earth in a cave system under the Maya Mountains. This adventure takes place in St Herman’s Blue Hole National Park, known for the blue jungle pool where the park got its name.

The journey starts in the rainforest as you head to the caves with your guide. Listen carefully, as you will learn a thing or two about the area’s geology on route.

A group of tourists heading to the Blue Hole with their tubes in Belize.

It is then time to don your headlamps and head underground. You will be in the cave system for around 2 hours, which may seem like a long time, but it will fly by.

You won’t have to worry about a thing on this tour, as it does pick-ups from all the hotels in Hopkins, and all gear is included, so all you have to do is show up and be ready for adventure.

Snorkeling the barrier reef near Hopkins has to be one of the most incredible snorkeling experiences in the world. The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site rich with diverse wildlife. More than 500 species of fish call the colorful coral their home, and on this half-day trip, you will be taken out to meet them.

No experience is needed, and they will provide all the equipment for you. Experienced guides will accompany you, as they know where to find the best spots and the most wildlife. If you have ever dreamed of swimming with turtles, dolphins, nurse sharks, or eagle rays, this tour is for you.

The two tours below are in Mayflower Bocawina National Park, which is rich in flora and fauna. The National Park covers a vast 7,000 acres, so you will get your nature fix no matter what type of activity you choose to enjoy. No transport is included with these tours, so you will have to make your way there, but you can grab a taxi and head there directly from Hopkins easily.

Waterfall Rappelling and Ziplining

For an action-packed adventure near Hopkins Belize that you will remember forever, take a tour combining waterfall rappelling and ziplining in one incredible trip.

The day starts with a bang as you zipline for 2.5 miles through the jungle, the longest zipline in the country. After a delicious lunch, it is time to hike through the rainforest for about 20 minutes to Bocawina Falls, where the second part of the tour begins. Rappel down these beautiful falls for 100 feet, and once you reach the bottom, you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing dip in the water.

A tourist rappelling down the side of a waterfall.

Although this may sound challenging, it is more of a family-friendly adventure with smaller thrills but is still a fantastic way to spend the day.

Ziplining in Bocawina

If you still want a bit of adrenaline rush but don’t have time for the whole adventure, then just ziplining is also an option.

A woman ziplining through the middle of a forest.

Take in the views of the incredible Bocawina Rainforest as you soar through the air for 2.5 miles of the course. The course comprises 12 platforms and eight runs, so you have plenty of time to build up your confidence and enjoy the thrill. The longest run is 2300 feet, so it will seem like you are flying forever across the lush Belizian rainforest.

Tours are available throughout the day, so you can pick a time that fits in with your other adventures, and all safety gear is included in the tour price, along with knowledgeable guides.

There are several ways to reach Hopkins, depending on your starting point and preferred mode of transportation.

You can take a shuttle or taxi from the airport to Hopkins, which is about a 2.5-hour drive. I’d recommend just taking a shuttle! You can easily book a shuttle here.

If you prefer to drive, Hopkins is located on the Southern Highway, which runs from Belize City to Punta Gorda. The drive from Belize City to Hopkins takes about 2.5 hours, and the road is well-paved and easy to navigate. You can rent a car from the airport or in Belize City.

Driving on dirt road to things to do in Belize.

Renting a car is what we did, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s incredibly chill and easy to drive around Belize, and the main roads are maintained. Check here for rental cars.

Another option is to take a bus from Belize City to Dangriga and then transfer to another bus to Hopkins. The bus ride takes about 3-4 hours and is a more affordable option than renting a car or taking a shuttle. But it will also be the slowest and least comfortable option.

In recent years, as more travelers are visiting Southern Belize, the friendly seaside village of Hopkins has blossomed into an incredible destination. The village is primarily known for its Garifuna culture and heritage, however, there are plenty of other things to do there. Some of these activities include exploring the Southern Barrier Reef and hiking at nearby nature reserves.

Hopkins’ location also provides easy access to mainland Belize jungle expeditions , which has played a crucial role in increasing the popularity of the village.

Top Things To Do in Hopkins

1. explore the southern reef and cayes.

South Water Caye with Hamanasi Snorkeling Guide

One of the best aspects about Hopkins is that the Garifuna are seafaring people. Local guides are eager to help guests explore nearby reefs and offshore cayes. South Water Caye Marine Reserve , for example, is only 30 minutes by boat and has some of the best diving and snorkeling sites in Belize. For those that prefer visiting remote atolls, Glover’s Reef is a prime destination for sea explorers that want seclusion and access to exploring the unmatched biodiversity found in the  Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve .

2. Experience Village Life in Hopkins

Entrance Sign to Hopkins Village

No visit to Hopkins is complete without exploring the village. Luckily the “downtown” core is small so anyone can easily cover the village by walking or biking. I recommend strolling the main street and beaches before stopping at any of the many local restaurants and bars. Visit Ellas Cool Spot for an amazing jerk chicken lunch, and for something nicer, eat at Hamanasi’s Singanga Restaurant or Chef Rob’s Gourmet Cafe. Also, check out the Big Dock Ceviche Bar, for a cool over-water bar experience.

3. Take Garifuna Cooking Lessons

Hudut with Fu-fu and Casava bread

One of the best ways to experience any destination is through its culture and if you take a Garifuna cooking lesson in Hopkins you will be treated to an amazing experience that will last a lifetime. Typically, the lesson involves cooking Hudut , a traditional Garifuna dish that is made up of ripe and green plantains and a Belizean-style coconut fish curry. Seeing the cooking process is amazing, however, interacting and hearing the cook share her childhood stories is even better.

4. Try Garifuna Drumming and Dancing

Garinagu people of Belize with traditional clothing

Another must-have experience while in Hopkins is taking  drumming and dance lessons . While I was in university, I took Garifuna drumming lessons as one of my electives and it was an incredible experience. I must admit that it normally takes several drumming lessons to get good at it, however, one session is enough to learn the basics. Plus, although you may not master drumming, you might excel at dancing Punta or singing traditional songs.

5. Visit the Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Waterfall Repelling at Mayflower Bocawina National Park

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast looking for a hardcore jungle adventure, you’ll really enjoy visiting the Mayflower Bocawina National Park . The park is just 20 minutes from Hopkins by car and consists of over 7000 acres of pristine lowland broadleaf forest, refreshing waterfalls, and evidence of an ancient Mayan city. It has the longest zip-line course in Central America and three waterfalls to rappel down from. Additionally, there are several amazing nature trails and tons of wildlife-spotting opportunities. For more info, check out this blog on the top things to do at Bocawina .

6. Explore the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Visitor Center at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve

Just 30 minutes from Hopkins is the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, famous for being the first Jaguar Preserve in the world and a top hiking destination in Belize . Along with hiking trails, you can learn about medicinal plants, go birdwatching, and swim in the waterfalls. At the entrance of the sanctuary is Maya Center, a small Maya village where you can experience the traditional Mayan lifestyle and culture. Book the Che’il Chocolate Tour, where you visit a cocoa farm and learn how to make handmade chocolate.

7. Visit Placencia

Beach area in front of Tipsy Tuna Bar in Placencia

For a relaxing day, consider a trip to Placencia , a picturesque 16-mile peninsula one hour from Hopkins. The highlight should be exploring Placencia Village, which is the main settlement on the southern tip of the peninsula. There you can find top restaurants, bars, beautiful beaches , and the Placencia Sidewalk, which is one of the world’s narrowest main streets with various little shops along the way. Other villages on the peninsula include Seine Bight, a Garifuna village, and Maya Beach, a resort town.

8. Take a Day Trip to Mainland Belize

El Castillo is the tallest temple at Xunantunich

As I mentioned in the intro, one of the best things about Hopkins is that although it is on the coast, it provides easy access to mainland Belize. The top mainland tours to do from Hopkins are (1) Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve , (2) Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave , and (3) Xunantunich Maya Ruins in western Belize. You can also visit Tikal if you don’t mind venturing into Guatemala. Finally, I also want to add The Belize Zoo to the list, however, it is best done during your car transfer from the international airport.

9. Experience Bioluminescence at Anderson’s Lagoon

Baby Crocodile at Anderson’s Lagoon - Hopkins Village Bioluminescence Tour

The bioluminescence tour includes a sunset boat cruise to Anderson’s Lagoon, where visitors can see bioluminescent water. Guests are first treated to wildlife-spotting opportunities along the Sittee River before arriving at the lagoon at nightfall, just in time to see a mystical light show as the water is agitated by the boat. Guests can also jump into the water if they want to see the water light up around them. Note that this tour is seasonal and is best done during Belize’s dry season (December to April).

10. Tour Monkey River

Monkey River boat tour

Located on the northern tip of Toledo, Monkey River is a small creole village about one hour from Hopkins. A tour of Monkey River  allows guests to learn about the interesting history of the village and go on a boat ride where people can get up close to nature, including spotting wildlife such as exotic birds, howler monkeys, and crocodiles. And after cruising through the length of the Monkey River, visitors are treated to an exhilarating tour of Manatee watching near Harvest Caye.

By the way, I only recommend doing the mainland tours in western Belize from Hopkins if you’re staying in Hopkins for your entire vacation since if you’re spending a few nights in Cayo, the tours are much closer and cheaper from San Ignacio Town .

Did I miss anything? If I did, please comment below with your suggestions.

Things to do in Hopkins, Belize - Where to Stay and How to Get There

hopkins belize travel

Traditionally a quiet, unassuming beach town, Hopkins, in southern Belize has in recent years become a must-visit place for many visitors to the country. There are many reasons for this growth in popularity, from its ideal location to many southern mainland tours, highly rated resorts, and authentic culture, to its proximity to Sittee River.

Hopkins is a small, authentic Central American village that is warm and welcoming to visitors. There is a large percentage of Garifuna settlers here, who have maintained their cultural traditions, such as drumming, which is a must-do in Hopkins . Directly adjacent to Hopkins is the Sittee River and “resort row”. The marina close to the resort area has started to become highly sought after for Belize investors, and there is a great deal of development here. Along Sittee River, boaters will be able to access deep river boating with direct access to the Caribbean Sea.

If the idea of an authentic cultural village, newer to tourism than the more developed, discovered places like Ambergris Caye , Caye, Caulker , and Placencia , appeals to you. And you like the idea of land that looks like it could be Alabama from 100 years ago. Or you like the idea of deep-water boating with direct access to the sea. Then you may want to put Hopkins on your must-visit list. For those that have made this decision, here is a guide to making the most out of your time here.

10 Amazing Things to do in Hopkins, Belize:

1. hike, zipline, and swim in the waterfalls at bocawina national park.

BODY-Recovered-Waterfall-Belize-300x200.jpg

This park is gorgeous, and the world-class hiking you can do will take you to remarkable vistas and waterfall swims. You can do it all in the park and it is a short drive from Hopkins.

2. Take a Monkey River Tour

Monkey River is a very rustic, frozen-in-time village in southern Belize. You can boat down a river on a crocodile sighting hunt, and you can walk through the dense forest and see Monkeys. This is an unforgettable trip for many people. You can see the mangroves and leeward side of the Caribbean, as well as likely see manatees.

3. Visit the Cockscomb Jaguar Preserve

iStock-496565663-Jaguar-Freder-min-300x200.jpg

©Freder/iStock

Cockscomb is one of the only jaguar preserves in the world, and it is a huge, vast piece of land where you can hike through the tropical forests, see untouched Maya ruins, swim in waterfalls, and tube through a natural lazy river (it is long, relaxing, scenic, and fun).

4. Listen to Garifuna Drumming

Garifuna culture is a huge part of the Belize experience, and part of the culture is the history of art, music, and food from African roots. The Garifuna drumming is a hypnotic, exotic experience that can only be had in a handful of places in the western hemisphere. Art and cooking lessons are also offered in the area.

5. A Day in Town

iStock-496478653-Hopkins-Belize-SimonDannhauer-min-300x199.jpg

©SimonDannahauer/iStock

I highly recommend you take a day on your vacation to see the town and area surrounding Hopkins and Sittee River. You can rent a bike very easily and see the entire area—don’t miss seeing the Curve Bar, a world-class marina and a wonderful stop for a rest. You can rent paddleboards or kayaks right in town, I recommend you do this early in the morning as the water tends to be the calmest. At night, there are so many wonderful dining and entertainment options. A few of my favorites are Hamanasi, The Coconut Husk, Chef Rob’s, Driftwood, or the Sandbar at the upscale little shopping area called Caribbean Shores.

6. Maya King Waterfalls

Maya King waterfalls used to be more of a secret, where local families would come, especially on Sundays, to relax, swim, and barbeque. Now it has caught on as an amazing day trip, and there is a large, comfortable pavilion, toilets, a deck overlooking a waterfall that is perfect for yoga, world-class hiking, a wild tubing experience, and more. Don’t miss a peek at the bamboo forest on your way out too.

iStock-132028749-Snorkelling-Belize-DOUGBERRY-min-300x200.jpg

©dougberry/iStock

One of the most popular and memorable experiences you can have in Belize is the world-class snorkeling at the second biggest barrier reef in the world. People come from all over the world to snorkel and scuba dive here. In fact, Belize is one of the few places in the world where you can scuba dive with whale sharks. There are hundreds of cayes off the shore to visit in addition to the reef. The array of snorkel experiences could make up a whole week of a trip, but I recommend you at least book a one-day trip so you can even combine it with some fishing or island hopping.

8. Banana Farm

There aren’t too many places in the world where minutes away you can tour and experience a live, working banana farm. This farm will feel like you went back in time, and is a highly regarded experience for an exotic, authentic look at how many bananas make it into the U.S.

9. Xunantunich and Cave Tubing

iStock-121386211-Xaunantunich-Belize-kddailey-min-300x200.jpg

©kddailey/iStock

One of the most popular and well-regarded Maya ruins in the country is Xunantunich. These are spectacular Maya ruins that you can climb all the way to the top of. This is not for the faint of heart, and contains no handrails. This is located in Cayo, which is a couple hours’ drive from Hopkins, but is worth the trip. You will get to see a lot of the country, and I promise, the drive goes very quickly—the guides often make interesting stops and provide history on the way. The tour is often combined with world-class cave tubing or other experiences, and is a full day that shouldn’t be missed when in Belize.

10. Maya Chocolate Tour

The Maya culture is a big reason people want to come to Belize, and in southern Belize, there is ample experiences to interact with Maya families—even in their homes. You can learn to make chocolate, learn to cook in an open cooking pit, basket weaving, and much more. There is a range of experiences you can pick from, all within a reasonable drive from Hopkins.

Where to stay in Hopkins, Belize

When it comes to staying in Hopkins you can relax at one of the many highly-rated resorts along resort row. Hamanasi is one of the most highly-rated resorts in Central America, and as such, it can be pricey. But if you read the reviews, almost everyone agrees that it is worth it for the experience due to the level of service, wonderful restaurant, and beachfront location with many areas to relax and enjoy nature. Fortunately, there is a range of resorts for every budget here. Jaguar Reef is more moderately priced but with wonderful pools, restaurants, free bikes, and a very central location. You can hardly go wrong with any resort in this area.

Interestingly, most of this part of Sittee River is a scrubbed-clean tourist area—one of the only places in the country that is specifically set aside for tourists, no local housing in the vicinity, and yet it still manages to maintain local charms, with Hopkins just a short bike ride away.

How to get to Hopkins, Belize

How to get to Hopkins, Belize

To get to Hopkins you will fly into Belize’s one and only International Airport, Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, BZE, in Belize City. Hopkins is about a two-and-a-half to three-hour scenic drive from here. Driving in Belize is straightforward and renting cars in common practice. Other popular methods of transport to Hopkins are to get a shuttle bus from BZE directly to your hotel, or you can take a puddle jumper to Dangriga, which will take you about 15 minutes, and you can get a cab or hotel shuttle to your hotel from there.

Hassle-Free Travel To Enchanting Hopkins, Belize: Insider Tips And Routes

Exploring transportation to placencia belize: choices and considerations.

Embarking on a journey to the tranquil shores of Hopkins in Belize is an exciting adventure. It all begins with your international flight landing at the Philip S. W. Goldson Airport in Ladyville, just nine miles north of bustling Belize City. Belize City serves as the country’s pivotal transportation center, acting as your gateway to the stunning beauty of Hopkins. Whether you’re starting from Belize City or the International Airport, an array of travel options awaits your selection.

Travel to Hopkins via Taxi

For convenience, a taxi is the way to go – a straightforward albeit pricier choice. Recognizing licensed taxis is easy, thanks to their distinctive green license plates. With a simple wave, securing a taxi and discussing fares is a breeze. Taxi drivers are friendly and eager to take you across the entire country, Hopkins included.

Hopkins Travel by Air

While Hopkins lacks an airfield, multiple daily flights between Belize City and Dangriga (DGA) provide seamless connectivity. This swift aerial journey sets the stage, bridging the distance between the two locations. Once in Dangriga, you have the flexibility to choose taxis, buses, or even personal vehicles for the remaining leg of your trip.

The airborne voyage from Belize City to Dangriga takes just 15 minutes – a brief yet exhilarating experience. Subsequently, a 30-minute drive from Dangriga brings you to the serene embrace of Hopkins, ready to indulge in its coastal charm.

Hopkins Travel by Bus

Belize’s well-established inter-city bus system makes traversing the country accessible. Beginning your journey in Belize City, look out for buses headed to the southeastern coastal town of Dangriga. This budget-friendly option comes at a nominal fee, though expect some crowding and intermittent stops along the route.

Plan for around three hours of travel from Belize City to Dangriga. There, you’ll switch buses for the final stretch to Hopkins. Two daily departures from Dangriga – at 12 noon and 5:00 PM – offer a convenient and economical route to the captivating shores of Hopkins.

Hopkins Travel by Car

Embarking on a picturesque road journey offers multiple paths to reach Hopkins by car. Some digital maps may suggest the Coastal Highway route, despite it not being along the coast. A notable 2023 update: the newly rebuilt Coastal Highway is now a prominent route to southern Belize, cutting about an hour from the drive to Hopkins.

Alternatively, opt for the older route via Belmopan. Begin on the George Price Highway, also known as the Western Highway. Transition to the Hummingbird Highway, leading to Dangriga. From there, the Southern Highway guides you to the Hopkins Road exit – a clear path into the heart of the village. Although this route adds an hour compared to the coastal option, it’s celebrated as the country’s most scenic highway, ensuring a captivating drive.

For a streamlined journey, consider Barefoot Services. They stand ready to arrange shuttle or private transfer services tailored to your preferences, including route choice. This promises a hassle-free and enjoyable voyage from Belize City to the captivating shores of Hopkins.

  • Post author: Gary Funa

  • Post category: Hopkins

Hopkins is an idyllic Garifuna village on Belize’s coastline that makes an ideal destination to experience beachside kayaking and canoeing. Hopkins also makes for an excellent launchpad to discover marine adventures at Belize Barrier Reef National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) as well as thrilling jungle expeditions.

Day trips to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary allow visitors to hike through the world’s first jaguar reserve and Mayflower Bocawina National Park provides world-class hiking, swimming, and rappelling.

Silk Cayes Marine Reserve

Hopkins is an ideal destination for travelers in search of an authentic Belizean beach experience . While Hopkins may be newer to tourism compared to more established spots like Caye Caulker or Placencia, its relaxed ambiance and natural beauty combine perfectly for an enjoyable vacation experience.

Adventurous spirits can experience Hopkins through kayaking and canoeing adventures, with scenic vistas along the pristine Sittee River and Anderson Lagoon offering picturesque vistas, unique wildlife encounters, as well as nightly illumination by microorganisms that illuminate it like never before!

Glover’s Reef Atoll, a nature reserve boasting abundant marine life and spectacular coral formations, makes for an enjoyable kayaking excursion . Additionally, this island serves as the nesting grounds for many seabird species such as magnificent frigate birds and red-footed boobies; guided bird-watching tours provide the ideal way to spot them as well as other tropical species.

Snorkelers looking to explore can head out onto the nearby Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here they can encounter incredible marine creatures such as manatees, sting rays, and turtles – perfect for an unforgettable snorkeling adventure!

Silk Cayes island is best visited during its dry season from November to April. In this period, sea conditions will be at their most tranquil and visibility will be at its greatest. Join a guided tour that departs from town or arrange for private boat transfers from your hotel.

Hopkins is home to the vibrant Garifuna community, comprised of African-Caribbeans that first settled here during the 1800s. Visitors can immerse themselves in local culture by attending drumming workshops at Lebeha Drumming Center or learning how to cook hudut – one of Hopkins’ signature dishes!

Other outdoor activities available at Hopkins include visiting Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary for hiking adventures that offer amazing waterfall swims and panoramic vistas, or Bocawina National Park for rainforest adventures that will leave you feeling on top of the world.

Tobacco Caye

Tobacco Caye, located off the Belize Barrier Reef, is a quiet island paradise where visitors can escape crowds for an authentic Caribbean beach vacation experience. Without resorts or restaurants on Tobacco Caye – only beach huts and hammocks beneath palm trees – Tobacco Caye provides ample opportunity for swimming right off its shore or snorkeling into its nearby marine reserve with coral and fish species!

Tobacco Caye Marine Station is an engaging way for those interested in marine biology and conservation to learn more. This non-profit organization runs research and education programs on the reef such as plastic clean-ups, lionfish culling and reef monitoring; additionally they host study abroad groups from high schools and universities that offer hands-on learning experiences.

Locals also run a bar on Tobacco Caye Island that acts as a community hub, serving food and drinks to boaters and tourists. It is also a prime spot to watch Tobacco Caye’s breathtaking sunsets.

If you’re visiting Tobacco Caye, two accommodation options to consider when staying are Gill’s Cove or Windward Lodge (formerly Tobacco Caye Lodge; US$99pp with three meals included). Both offer simple beach-style cabins featuring private patios and stunning sea views; both will call guests for meals by using bells; dining on daily catches from their boat is another highlight or going on night snorkeling excursions are other possibilities!

Untame offers excursions for Tobacco Caye guests looking to snorkel and kayak the Mayflower Bocawina National Park, an easily reachable rainforest park boasting swimming spots, waterfalls and trails with incredible hiking opportunities.

Hopkins offers many experiences that allow visitors to gain insight into Maya culture and history, from chocolate making and open fire pit cooking, basket weaving and handicraft shopping at its central market to picking up handicrafts or souvenirs; you might also enjoy sampling some local beer like Belikin or wine!

Davis Falls

Hopkins Beachfront Town of Hopkins boasts a hidden treasure for travelers to discover: Mayflower Bocawina National Park is nearby and visitors can discover stunning natural beauty and exciting adventures within this lush national park. Hiking to Bocawina’s waterfalls provides breathtaking views while reaching their summit rewards you with refreshing swims in crystal-clear waters below.

Other highlights of the park include an unspoiled mangrove forest, bird sanctuary and Sittee River. Kayaking offers an exciting way to discover these natural habitats or you can take part in guided tours led by experienced guides who will show you all of their sights. Kayaking at night provides a unique way to witness bioluminescent organisms lighting up this mangrove forest!

Are you seeking an adventure? Paddle along the river and through Anderson Lagoon for an unforgettable experience. This lagoon is stunning to look upon at any time, but especially stunning during certain months when its shallow waters glow due to a special glow caused by algae in its shallow waters – an unforgettable sight indeed!

Hopkins is home to an abundance of vibrant Garifuna culture, and you can learn about local traditions by visiting Innies Restaurant or Lebeha Drumming Center. Here, you can partake in Garifuna dancing while listening to its musical contributions – two ways in which these vibrant cultures define life here!

Caitlin’s Bakery has become an institution since opening their doors in 2000. Here you can sample an array of nutritious breads and muffins such as banana bread, carrot muffins and pumpkin muffins; definitely worth visiting while on vacation!

Are you ready to explore Hopkins? Untame Belize can help plan an unforgettable trip. From accommodation booking, itinerary creation and other arrangements – we make exploring this intriguing hidden jewel as easy as can be!

Glover’s Reef Atoll

Glover’s Reef Atoll in the stunning Caribbean waters boasts an incredible variety of marine life, ranging from colorful coral reefs and mesmerizing marine creatures to peaceful lagoons and breathtaking sandbars. No matter if you are an eco-traveler or diving enthusiast, Glover’s Reef Atoll will not disappoint!

From beach resorts in Hopkins, it is easy to access Glover’s Reef Atoll for thrilling water activities or for more relaxing excursions by boat. Additionally, this small idyllic paradise serves as home for numerous seabird species such as frigatebirds and red-footed boobies; guided bird-watching tours provide opportunities to see these beautiful creatures up close in their natural environment.

Not only can you dive and snorkel Belize, but you can also gain insights into its rich history by visiting archaeological sites nearby. Xunantunich and Lubaantun offer stunning Maya ruins that provide a glimpse into Belizean culture and heritage. Hikers may enjoy exploring Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary which features refreshing waterfalls as well as abundant plant and animal species.

Sittee River, situated in Hopkins’ charming coastal village, offers canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts an idyllic river for canoeing and kayaking adventures. Boasting gorgeous natural beauty, exotic wildlife, and rich cultural history – Sittee River makes an unforgettable destination.

Hopkins is one of Belize’s premier beach vacation spots, offering exciting yet relaxing beach vacations to families and couples alike. Families will especially enjoy its peaceful environment; couples will find plenty of upscale and luxury beach resort options here, while discovering breathtaking Barrier Reef marine life, thrilling jungle adventures or becoming immersed in vibrant Garifuna culture are just a few ways this village stands out.
