Withey: Goodbye, hello as The Wiggles take their tour to Edmonton

Jeff Fatt hasn’t worn purple outside the office in a very, very long time. By office, I mean: the stage, the television, the CD covers, the YouTube videos, the beanie plush dolls, the birthday loot bags and the Chugga Chugga backpacks.

EDMONTON - Jeff Fatt hasn’t worn purple outside the office in a very, very long time.

By office, I mean: the stage, the television, the CD covers, the YouTube videos, the beanie plush dolls, the birthday loot bags and the Chugga Chugga backpacks.

Fatt is one of the original members of the Wiggles, a children’s music group from Australia that’s gone global since its inception in 1991. For more than two decades, he’s been performing live and on TV in a gorgeous grape jersey as Purple Wiggle, the one with the habit of nodding off. “Wake up Jeff!” is one of the gang’s signature lines.

Now, if you ask me, purple brings out the colour in Fatt’s eyes. But I get the desire for change. If I’d worn the same hue to work for 21 years, I’d be ready to retire my jersey, too. Fatt is about to bow out of the group, along with two other originals, making way for the next generation of Wiggles.

“It’s a bittersweet thing, knowing that it’s the last time you’ll be performing in the various venues, with all your mates,” Fatt told me via scratchy Skype connection from Auckland, New Zealand. “At the same time it’s a really exciting time, introducing the new Wiggles.”

Fatt and his colourful mates have been on the road with the Wiggles’ Celebration Tour , now making its way across Canada. That includes a stop in Edmonton Thursday, Oct. 25, for two shows at Rexall Place. This tour is children’s last chance to see the original four Wiggles as a team. At the end of 2012, Fatt and two other Wiggles — Murray Cook (Red) and Greg Page (Yellow) — are stepping down. Anthony Field (Blue) is staying on.

The replacement performers are coming along on this tour, to ease the transition. (They’ll be wearing ‘Wiggles in Training’ shirts.) It’s important the swap be gradual “rather than all of a sudden,” Fatt said. Even so, there’s been some Wigglish lament. “We have noticed a few tears in the audience, sometimes at the end of the show.”

I get the need to treat the Wiggle switch with kid gloves. It’s jarring, to say the least, when a familiar face on the screen or stage gets the old switcheroo, be it Batman, Bond, Dr. Who or a character in your favourite soap opera. And upset fans is never good for business.

I never got used to the new girl playing Becky in ’90s TV sitcom Roseanne. It took me a good chunk of time to warm up to Albus Dumbledore’s replacement in the Harry Potter films. And I gave up Mr. Dressup completely after puppets Casey and Finnegan hit the road, allegedly heading to kindergarten. I’m sorry, but Chester the Crow, Granny and pals couldn’t hold a candle to the bowl-cut boy and his shaggy grey dog.

But we ought to cut Fatt some slack. In 2011, the near sexagenarian had to have a (not purple) pacemaker installed after he was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. For the sleepy Wiggle, it was a wake-up call, of sorts. “That got me thinking,” he said, “particularly in light of the fact I’m turning 60 next year, and I have a couple of compressed discs in my lower back.”

Fatt is all Wiggled out.

He plans to do a lot of fishing, surfing and bike riding (all low-intensity, we hope?) and generally enjoy his post-Purple freedom. Not that being a Wiggle was a chore. Quite the opposite. “It’s such an enjoyable thing to be doing,” he said. “It’s been a great hobby for these 21 years.”

A great hobby with great dividends. As the world’s top preschool entertainers, the Wiggles are a huge financial success. They were the top-earning Australian entertainer four years in a row, according to Business Review Weekly, earning the equivalent of nearly $46 million (Canadian dollars) in 2009. Worldwide they’ve sold more than 23 million DVDs and videos, seven million music albums and eight million books. And since 2005, they’ve performed more than 350 shows to 1.5 million fans in the United States alone.

Makes for a rather cushy retirement.

Fatt still plans to be involved in Wiggles songwriting and recording. “I might even make a cameo appearance here and there,” he noted. But he’ll be done on stage and on TV. Which means he might just add a little eggplant and lavender to his wardrobe. “Maybe I will be able to start wearing purple again, just something subtle.”

He said he’s pleased with his replacement, Lachlan Gillespie, who is just 26. “We’ve all been saying that he’s very Jeff-like. He’s very laid-back and not dissimilar to myself in personality.”

I’ve made peace with the Mr. Dressup puppet upset. I’m sure Wiggle fans will get over the replacements, too. And before you can say “Wake up Jeff!” they’ll be crazy for Justin Bieber instead.
