Caller : Uh, well, I’d like to  catch  a return flight on the twenty-ninth. Oh, and I’d like the cheapest flight available.

Travel Agent : Okay. Let me see. Hmm, hmm . . .

Caller : Yeah?

Travel Agent : Well, the price for the flight is almost double the price you would pay if you leave the day before.

Caller : Whoo.  Let’s go with  the cheaper flight. By the way, how much is it?

Travel Agent : It’s only $980.

Caller : Alright. Well, let’s go with that.

Travel Agent : Okay. That’s flight 1070 from Salt Lake City to New York, Kennedy Airport,  transferring  to flight 90 from Kennedy to Helsinki.

Caller : And what are the  departure  and arrival times for each of those flights?

Travel Agent : It leaves Salt Lake City at 10:00 AM, arriving in New York at 4:35 PM, then transferring to flight 90 at 5:55 PM, and arriving in Helsinki at 8:30 AM the next day.

Caller : Alright. And, uh, I’d like to request a  vegetarian  meal.

Travel Agent : Sure, no problem. And could I have your name please?

Travel Agency Role-play Activity Execution :

I teach at a Japanese junior high school. Interestingly, our school is in Prague, Czech Republic. The kids in my advanced class told me they wanted to learn more about European cities, so I designed this travel agency role-play activity. It's a bit complicated but you don't have to do it my way. Just look at my materials for ideas and then design your own role-play that suits your students.

Step 1: Explain Activity & Form a Travel Agency

I told the students that they were going to become travel agents for a travel agency. I told them that each travel agency has two agents, so they should get in pairs .

Next, I told them that each travel agent was going to design a trip to  one city  in Europe (you can use the whole world if you prefer).

Then I showed them a COMPLETED version of the above travel template (I filled it out with information about my home city in Canada).

I asked each student to include:

• 3 tourist attractions for their location -and-
• one custom (e.g. "people speak Italian there")

"other"  can be used for anything miscellaneous (e.g. "Italy uses the Euro currency.")

Feel free to change the template however you'd like.

Step 2: Research One Destination Each

We went to the school's computer room and the students began their research. I had hoped to finish this in one 45-minute class, but we had a few delays so it ended up taking nearly two classes. Students mainly used Wikipedia (in both Japanese and English).

Step 3 : Practice Role-Play Dialogue

Next, I gave the class the below travel agency hand-out.

The expressions I decided to focus on were:

• go on  a trip

I  modeled  the conversation with one of the advanced students in front of the class.

Then I had the students practice the conversation (without writing anything) with a partner using their  hometown  as the destination. I told them that I didn't want them reading the dialogue during the activity, so they should try to  memorize  the key expressions.

Next, I explained that the boxes below the dialogue (the ones that say "Travel Agency Name") can be used to  make notes  about the trips they hear about from other travel agencies. Since each agency has two agents, each offering a trip somewhere different, there are two destinations to be filled in per agency.

In my class, there were 14 students. So there are 6 boxes (6  other  agencies to visit). You'll need to delete or add boxes, depending on the number of travel agencies you have in your English class.

Step 4 : Do the Role-Play Activity

You'll have to have pairs alternate between being customers who are shopping for a trip and travel agents who are selling their travel packages. I didn't involve money at this stage. I just had students get information and say "Thanks for the information. I'll be back later."

It took about one 45-minute class and a half for all of my students to visit all the other travel agencies and hear about the other cities they could visit.

Step 5: Decide & Purchase a Ticket

In this class, I had the students look at the  notes  they took and decide where they wanted to go. Then I modeled the dialogue (see below) for  purchasing a ticket  with a student in front of the class.

Next, I explained some of the more difficult vocabulary on the two "tickets" below. To make it more authentic, I cut the tickets out and gave them to the students (two tickets per student).

Once they understood what all the fields were for, I had them practice with one ticket. With their partner, I had them go through the dialogue and ask the relevant questions about their partner's destination in order to practice filling in the ticket.

Then, when they understood the process, I had them stand up and go to the actual travel agency they wanted to purchase a ticket from. The travel agent there then used his/her last ticket to sell to the customer.

Step 6 : Closing

In the end, I had each student stand up and say something like "I bought a ticket to Vienna because I have never been to Austria and I want to eat sausages." After each student had announced their purchase and a reason, we were finished.

And that's how I did it. It was a good activity; the students learned plenty about European cities and they had the opportunity to speak a lot. If you'd like to try this roleplay, please download it here . I recommend designing something similar for your students.

Conversation Between Travel Agent and Customer [Dialogue]

Customer: Good morning, I need a return ticket to Canada

Travel agent: Good morning, which airline would you like to travel with?

Customer: Yes! It would be better if you book me an Air Canada ticket.

Travel agent: Friday flight from Karachi to Toronto at 11 am, this flight will be via Istanbul and Paris, where there will be a 3-hour layover.

Customer: How much is the business class fare?

Travel Agent: Yes, there is. Air Canada Business Class fare is $8,591 for a round-trip ticket.

Customer: How much is the fare if I want to take an economy class?

Travel agent: Yes miss you will get economy for $4479, I think the economy round trip will be good for you.

Customer: Yes! The business class ticket is too expensive, I would prefer the economy class, by the way, Air Canada has Paris and Istanbul routes, so can I travel between these countries for a few moments?

Travel Agent: Yes, this is the advantage of Air Canada flights, they give their passengers access to nearby tourist attractions during their stay, but the service is their own, which provides an opportunity for entertainment for a fixed period of time.

Customer: What are the necessary steps to take before traveling to Canada?

Travel agent: Conditions of entry from Pakistan to Canada

Entry is permitted only for fully vaccinated passengers.

Passengers are required to submit their travel plan and proof of vaccination using the Arrive CAN app prior to arrival

Unvaccinated Canadian citizens and residents are allowed to enter Canada but must self-quarantine for 14 days.

A negative COVID-19 test is issued no later than 3 days prior to arrival for unvaccinated passengers.

Customer: Ok I prepare it

Travel agent: Yes, no problem, you can use any card.

Travel Agent: Well you can sign here. Ms. You can now travel with a ‘smart bag’ on Air Canada. There are special instructions for traveling with a bag that has built-in charging, location tracking, or other battery-powered technology.

Customer: OK, besides what are any necessary instructions about the goods?

Travel Agent: If you are traveling with an infant on your lap, you can bring 1 additional standard bag for your baby’s luggage, all other baggage rules are strictly enforced. All bags over the maximum size will need to be checked, and additional checked baggage charges may apply.

Customer: Thanks for the information.

Airport English: Conversation Lesson

Need to speak English at the airport? This travel English lesson will teach you phrases from English conversations! Study each dialogue at the airport and then read my explanation of the phrases in each English conversation.

Airport English Conversation #1 – At the Check-In Desk

Dan is flying from New York to Los Angeles. When he arrives at the airport, he goes to the check-in desk. Listen to the conversation he has with the agent:

Agent:  Good afternoon! Where are you flying to today?

Dan:  Los Angeles.

Agent:  May I have your passport, please?

Dan:  Here you go.

Agent:  Are you checking any bags?

Dan:  Just this one.

Agent:  OK, please place your bag on the scale.

Dan:  I have a stopover in Chicago – do I need to pick up my luggage there?

Agent:  No, it’ll go straight through to Los Angeles. Here are your boarding passes – your flight leaves from gate 15A and it’ll begin boarding at 3:20. Your seat number is 26E.

Dan:  Thanks.

Conversation Vocabulary and Phrases

• Instead of  “Where are you flying today?” the agent may ask “What’s your final destination?”  The answer will be the same!
• You can say  “Here you go” anytime you give something to somebody
• To  check your bags  means to put them on the airplane inside the cargo compartment. The small bag you take with you on the airplane is called a  carry-on . You need to put your carry-on bags through the X-ray machine at security.
• The  scale is the equipment that tells you the weight of your luggage (45 kilograms, for example)
• A  stopover  or  layover  is when the airplane stops in a different city before continuing to the final destination
• If the agent says that your luggage will  go straight through , it means it will go directly to the final destination (and you don’t need to pick it up during your stopover)
• Boarding passes  are the tickets that permit you to enter the airplane
• When a plane begins  boarding , it means that the passengers start to enter the plane. Usually boarding time is 30-60 minutes before takeoff (when the plane leaves)

Other Questions & Phrases for the Airport

• “Excuse me, where is the American Airlines check-in desk?”
• “How many bags can I check?”
• “Will my luggage go straight through, or do I need to pick it up in [Chicago]?”
• “How much is the fee?” If your bag is heavier than the weight limits, or if your bag is larger than the size limits, you may need to pay extra: an  oversized baggage fee  or overweight baggage fee  (this can be $75 to $300) .  Some airlines in the United States also charge a fee for ALL checked bags (usually $15 to $30).
• “Please mark this bag as ‘fragile.’” Say this if you have fragile or sensitive items in your bag that might break
• “Is the flight on time?” The agent will respond either “Yes” if the flight is on time, or “There’s a 20-minute delay” (for example) if the flight will leave later than expected.

Extra questions in the U.S.

On flights going to or inside the U.S., you might be asked some extra security questions before or during check-in. Here are some sample questions:

Answer YES to these questions:

• Did you pack your bags yourself?
• Has your luggage been in your possession at all times?
• Are you aware of the regulations regarding liquids in your carry-on? (Liquids must be 100 mL or less, and stored in a single quart-sized clear plastic bag) More information: TSA.gov

Answer NO to these questions:

• Are you carrying any firearms or flammable materials?
• Have you left your luggage unattended at any time?
• Has anyone given you anything to carry on the flight?

Airport English Conversation #2 – Going through Security

There are two pieces of equipment in security: you put your bags through the  X-ray machine,  and you walk through the  metal detector. Some airports also use a body scanner for a more careful check.  

The  X-ray machine  has a  conveyor belt  that moves your bags automatically through the machine. You can put small items like keys or money into plastic  bins.

In the picture below, the woman is walking through the metal detector. Her suitcase is on the conveyor belt after going through the X-ray machine.

Agent:  Please lay your bags flat on the conveyor belt, and use the bins for small objects.

Dan:  Do I need to take my laptop out of the bag?

Agent:  Yes, you do. Take off your hat and your shoes, too.

(he walks through the metal detector)

[BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP]

Agent:  Please step back. Do you have anything in your pockets – keys, cell phone, loose change?

Dan:  I don’t think so. Let me try taking off my belt.

Agent:  Okay, come on through.

(he goes through the metal detector again)

Agent:  You’re all set! Have a nice flight.

The phrase “you’re all set” is a common expression that means “you’re finished and everything is OK.”

Phrasal Verbs: SET OFF and GO OFF

When the alarm sounds, we say “the alarm went off.” To describe what  caused  the alarm to sound, we say “set off” – for example, “My keys set off the alarm” or “My keys set off the metal detector.”

Airport English: Announcements at the Gate

Airports are divided into  terminals  (the major sections of the airport) and each terminal has many  gates.  The  gate  is the door you go through to enter the airplane. Here are a few announcements you might hear while you are at the gate, waiting for the plane to board.

• “There has been a gate change.” (this means the flight will leave from a different gate)
• “United Airlines flight 880 to Miami is now boarding.” (this means it’s time for passengers to enter the plane)
• “Please have your boarding pass and identification ready for boarding.”
• “We would like to invite our first- and business-class passengers to board.”
• “We are now inviting passengers with small children and any passengers requiring special assistance to begin boarding.”
• “We would now like to invite all passengers to board.” (this means everyone can enter the plane)
• “This is the final boarding call for United Airlines flight 880 to Miami.” (this means it is the FINAL OPPORTUNITY to enter the plane before they close the doors)
• “Passenger John Smith, please proceed to the United Airlines desk at gate 12.”

Airport English Conversation #3: On the plane

The people who work inside the airplane serving food and drinks are called flight attendants.  Both men and women who have this job are called flight attendants. Listen to this conversation that Dan has with the flight attendant when dinner is served on the flight.

Dan:  Sorry?

Flight attendant:  Would you like chicken or pasta?

Dan:  I’ll have the chicken.

Flight attendant:  Anything to drink?

Dan:  What kind of soda do you have?

Flight attendant:  Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Orange, and Dr. Pepper.

Dan:  A Diet Coke, no ice, please.

Flight attendant:  Here you go.

English Conversation Tips:

If you didn’t understand what the flight attendant said, you can say Sorry?  or  Pardon?  to ask him or her to repeat it.

If you want to ask for something, you can use the phrase  “Can I have…?”  or “Could I have…?” Practice your pronunciation with these common requests:

• “Can I have a pillow?”
• “Can I have a blanket?”
• “Can I have a pair of headphones/earbuds?”
• “Could I have some water/coffee/tea?”
• “Could I have some extra napkins?”

Finally, if you need to stand up, but there is a person sitting between you and the aisle, you can say  Excuse me  and make a motion to start standing up. The person sitting next to you will understand and stand up to let you get out of your seat.

Travel Agent : Sir, I would like to tell you that we have recently prepared an amazing package for that.

Customer : Could you please tell me the details of that package?

Travel Agent : Sure sir. In that package, you will get 4 nights and 3 days. Breakfast for 3 days is complimentary in this, and the complete package is for 15000/-.

Customer : That’s great!

Travel Agent : So sir, when are you planning to go?

Customer : As you know, I was planning earlier but couldn’t go due to a reason but now as you have an amazing package and I am also free so I am planning to go within this week only.

Travel Agent : That’s perfectly ok sir!

Customer : This package is valid till when?

Travel Agent : For a month.

Customer : Great. What are all formalities needed to be done?

Travel Agent : Sir for booking this package you have to pay 2500/- with a copy of your id proof and photograph.

Customer : S ure, no problem. How can I make the payment?

Travel Agent : You can pay by card, cash or cheque.

4 travel secrets of the mega-rich, from a vacation planner for billionaires

Imagine closing down Versailles to enjoy a private candlelit dinner.

That's the reality for the ultra rich, and people like Jaclyn Sienna India make it happen.

India is the founder of a Sienna Charles , a members-only travel agency that caters to wealthy clients who take million-dollar trips around the world. India recently discussed her work and billionaire clientele in a Q&A with The Cut .

Her company's services include a $75,000 annual tier for unlimited travel and dining reservations, and a $150,000 yearly option to tack on a "lifestyle" component. That includes "arranging spa appointments, recruiting house staff, helping clients build a home gym, whatever they need," India told The Cut.

She shared some of the travel secrets of her unthinkably wealthy clients:

1. Penthouse suites are out, yachts are in

Most of India's clients are 55- to 75-year-old ex-finance workers in New York City, but in recent years, she's seen more interest from people in Dallas and Los Angeles who work in finance or film. Her newest clientele are tech VIPs in their 40s and 50s.

India's typical clients are no stranger to booking hotel suites for $30,000 a night, but it's becoming more passe.

The mega-rich want their accommodations loaded up with their preferred foods, fancy water and drinks as well as other, more-specific requests (a space with seven dog beds, for instance), but training hotel staff on everything within a few days is inefficient.

The trendier thing to do is stay at a villa or yacht owned and rented out by billionaires.

"[The owner] has customized everything, picked his staff, and trained them for expectations that are otherworldly," India said. All of that means her clients can "relax deeply because the staff knows how to deliver excellence every minute."

2. They don't deal with luggage

Unlike the rest of us, the rich aren't worried about airline baggage fees. Then again, they're not schlepping their suitcases at all.

Instead, they ship it, India said: "Just throw a FedEx label on it, and it arrives at your destination the next day."

3. They're not dining out at fancy restaurants

Though Sienna Charles staffers know all the best restaurants and how to get impossible reservations, India says many of her clients don't eat out when they travel.

That's what their private chefs are for, she says.

The chefs travel with clients and help maintain their diet and medical or health goals, India said. She gave an example of one client who traveled to San Francisco for two weeks, brought his chef and only ate out once.

"He has all the money in the world, but he didn't want to go to Michelin-star restaurants," India told The Cut. "A lot of our clients work really, really hard, and it's important for them to have consistency and routine wherever they go."

4. They want unique experiences

If you want to rub shoulders with a billionaire this summer, India said they're increasingly trading the typical hotspots (think: Capri) for more "unique experiences."

"They're taking the yacht around Sardinia or going to smaller islands in Sicily," she said.

Sometimes her clients have specific travel requests, like wanting to take a family trip to Rome in a specific timeframe. More often than not, they're pretty general about their vision and want help with the specific details.

One recent tech billionaire "told me they want to go to Europe in August for nine days, just the couple, no kids," India said. "And that's all they said. This is pretty common."

As for those with more modest means, India's best advice is to "normal" people is to steer away from places where celebrities and influencers abound. Or, at least, recognize that you're unlikely to get a similar A-lister experience if you go.

For example, she said, "The Hamptons are good if you stay at somebody's house and lay out at their pool and you have beach access. But if you go to be a lookie-loo and you're staying at a hotel and the traffic sucks and you can't get into a restaurant because nobody knows who you are, then that's probably not the best destination."

Drone flying toward Moscow downed in Elektrostal

MOSCOW, November 19. A drone flying to Moscow has been downed by air defense systems in Elektrostal in the Moscow Region, no one was hurt, Moscow’s Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on Sunday.

"In the Elektrostal municipal district, air defense forces repelled an attack by a drone, which was flying toward Moscow. According to preliminary data, its fragments fell down incurring no damage. No one was hurt," he wrote on his Telegram channel .

According to the Moscow mayor, emergencies services are working on the site.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates tried to wring itself out Thursday after the heaviest recorded rainfall ever to hit the desert nation , with its main airport allowing more flights even as floodwater still covered portions of major highways and communities.

Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel , allowed global carriers on Thursday morning to again fly into Terminal 1 at the airfield. And long-haul carrier Emirates, crucial to East-West travel, began allowing local passengers to arrive at Terminal 3, their base of operations.

However, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said in an interview with The Associated Press that the airfield needed at least another 24 hours to resume operations close to its usual schedule. Meanwhile, one desert community in Dubai saw floodwaters continue to rise Thursday to as much as 1 meter (3 feet) as civil defense officials struggled to pump out the water.

“We were looking at the radar thinking, ‘Goodness, if this hits, then it’s going to be cataclysmic,’” Griffiths said of the storm. “And indeed it was.”

The airport ended up needing 22 tankers with vacuum pumps to get water off its grounds. Griffiths acknowledged that taxiways flooded during the rains, though the airport’s runways remained free of water to safely operate. Online videos of a FlyDubai flight landing with its reverse thrust spraying out water caught the world’s attention.

“It looks dramatic, but it actually isn’t that dramatic,” Griffiths said.

Emirates, whose operations had been struggling since the storm Tuesday, had stopped travelers flying out of the UAE from checking into their flights as they tried to move out connecting passengers. Pilots and flight crews also had a hard time reaching the airport given the water on roadways.

But on Thursday, Emirates lifted that order to allow customers into the airport. That saw some 2,000 people come into Terminal 3, again sparking long lines, Griffiths said.

Others who arrived at the airport described hourslong waits to get their baggage, with some just giving up to head home or to whatever hotel would have them.

The UAE, a hereditarily ruled, autocratic nation on the Arabian Peninsula, typically sees little rainfall in its arid desert climate. However, a massive storm forecasters had been warning about for days blew through the country’s seven sheikhdoms.

By the end of Tuesday, more than 142 millimeters (5.59 inches) of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 94.7 millimeters (3.73 inches) of rain at Dubai International Airport. Other areas of the country saw even more precipitation.

Meanwhile, intense floods also have struck neighboring Oman in recent days. Authorities on Thursday raised the death toll from those storms to at least 21 killed.

The UAE’s drainage systems quickly became overwhelmed Tuesday, flooding out neighborhoods, business districts and even portions of the 12-lane Sheikh Zayed Road highway running through Dubai.

The state-run WAM news agency called the rain “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949.”

In a message to the nation late Wednesday, Emirati leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, said authorities would “quickly work on studying the condition of infrastructure throughout the UAE and to limit the damage caused.”

On Thursday, people waded through oil-slicked floodwater to reach cars earlier abandoned, checking to see if their engines still ran. Tanker trucks with vacuums began reaching some areas outside of Dubai’s downtown core for the first time as well. Schools remain closed until next week.

Authorities have offered no overall damage or injury information from the floods, which killed at least one person.

However, at least one community saw the effects of the rainfall only get worse Thursday. Mudon, a development by the state-owned Dubai Properties, saw flooding in one neighborhood reach as much as 1 meter. Civil defense workers tried to pump the water out, but it was a struggle as people waded through the floodwater.

Residents of Mudon, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity given the UAE’s strict laws governing speech, described putting together the equivalent of nearly $2,000 to get a tanker to the community Wednesday. They alleged the developers did nothing to help prior to that, even as they called and emailed. They also said a nearby sewage processing facility failed, bringing more water into their homes.

“A lot of people were in denial of how bad it was,” one homeowner said as civil defense officials waded through the water, bringing bottled water on a raft.

Dubai Holding, a state-owned company that has Dubai Properties as an arm, did not respond to questions. It’s part of a wider nexus that U.S. diplomats have called “Dubai Inc.” — all properties overseen by the city-state’s ruling family.

The flooding sparked speculation that the UAE’s aggressive campaign of cloud seeding — flying small planes through clouds dispersing chemicals aimed at getting rain to fall — may have contributed to the deluge. But experts said the storm systems that produced the rain were forecast well in advance and that cloud seeding alone would not have caused such flooding.

Scientists also say climate change is responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme storms, droughts, floods and wildfires around the world. Dubai hosted the United Nations’ COP28 climate talks just last year.

Abu Dhabi’s state-linked newspaper The National in an editorial Thursday described the heavy rains as a warning to countries in the wider Persian Gulf region to “climate-proof their futures.”

“The scale of this task is more daunting than it appears even at first glance, because such changes involve changing the urban environment of a region that for as long as it has been inhabited, has experienced little but heat and sand,” the newspaper said.
