When you need to bring several RVing equipment and toys, it’s possible your RV will carry too much weight.

This is why, to begin with, it is important to have a separate lightweight toy hauler, so that you can tow everything with ease.

If you want to bring outdoor toys, but at the same, travel with many passengers and gears, then a light toy hauler is a must have.

Toy haulers are spacious RVs with wide garages that carry loads of outdoor equipment or vehicles.

However, I tend to worry about how this might affect my towing capacity. Due to this common concern, I spent weeks of research to gather the best ultra light toy haulers that will balance carrying capacity and comfort, making sure that you can use even the smallest SUV to tow it.

1. VRV XTR 614  Smallest And Lightest Toyhauler

This light toy hauler focuses on hauling with a carrying capacity of 4,900 pounds, which is way bigger than its unloaded vehicle weight, but is capable of being lightweight enough to be towed for long trips.

Because of its 76 by 11-inch garage, it does not sacrifice comfort and hauling capacity even if VRV XTR 614 Toyhauler is one of the lightest toy haulers on the market.

To make full-time RVing even better, this compact toy hauler uses 50-amp electrical service, 19,000 BTU furnace, 9,200 BTU AC with wall thermostat.

What Is A Toy Hauler?

A toy hauler is designed to be spacious enough to store mechanical toys such as motorbikes or four-wheeler, which is why it is also known as a toy hauler.

Since toy haulers have extra garage-like space, it is typically more spacious than an RV and can accommodate more people, living quarters, and furniture.

In most units, the front part houses the living quarters, such as bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Meanwhile, the rear part serves as the storage or ‘cargo’ area for your toys.

When opened backward, the back wall of the hauler transforms into a ramp, which makes it easy to load and unload equipment, furniture, machines, and motorbikes.

The bottom line—a lightweight toy hauler is a roomy and sturdy cargo space that can safely transport your hunting gear, outdoor vehicles, and other camping equipment.

What To Look For In A Light Toy Hauler?

Toy haulers come with various specifications and features, but as long as these aspects positively impact the hauling capacity,an ultra light model will work wonders.

Dimensions And Weight: How Big Should A Lightweight Toy Hauler Be?

It is important to consider how the dimensions dictate the size and weight of a toy hauler.

You will load gear, furniture, or even a motorbike in a toy hauler, so it is vital to consider the trailer’s dry weight and how much additional weight you can safely carry.

It is pretty simple—know the dimensions and determine whether the size will enable you to take your desired toys.

The good thing is that modern units, among those I’ve recommended, are light enough that even an SUV or a small pickup can safely tow your toys inside.

Furthermore, toy haulers vary in lengths, with the smallest having 12 feet in length and the biggest fifth-wheels at 40 feet.

Even a compact and light box-length model of 21 feet has plenty of space for sleeping quarters, kitchen, bathroom, and a cargo area.

When it comes to weight ratings, you must consider two essential things: Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW) and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).

The UVW refers to the weight of a toy hauler without any accessories, appliances, water, fluids, fuel, cargo, or passengers.

On the other hand, the GVWR equates to the total permissible weight of the RV, which includes the passengers, equipment, appliances, fluids, and the like.

If your truck’s towing capacity is over the GVWR of a toy hauler, then you won’t have any problems in towing the hauler no matter how full it is.

To be sure, determine the RV’s approximate weight with its most basic package, including any add-ons you need.

Afterward, add the weight of the cargo and passengers to know whether your truck can tow the toy hauler.

How Much Weight Can A Light Toy Hauler Carry?

The hauling capacity refers to the combination of the available garage space and cargo weight.

Similarly, the weight a toy hauler can carry equates to how much your towing vehicle can handle.

For instance, a toy hauler with a 4,000-pound capacity means it is the actual weight of everything it can carry—toys, passengers, gears, appliances, and fluids.

Hence, your chosen model must have adequate weight capacity for your needs.

Since you are looking for a trailer that can safely carry your cargo, a light toy hauler must have a large open space.

Factor in how much your toys weigh and everything you need to carry inside the hauler.

Even a lightweight toy hauler starts its hauling capacity at 400 pounds and can go a little over 25,000 pounds max.

Collapsible Furniture

Since you have a lightweight toy hauler, you need all the spaces available, especially if you are taking a four-wheeler with you.

Some units that boast collapsible couches, foldable tables, and even rear beds that disappear into the ceiling to create more space.

Check For Tie-Downs And Brakes

Security is the key! Tie-downs are essential towing tools because they will hold the weight of your toys or equipment.

Make sure to anchor the tie-downs to something sturdy. In some cases, the extra weight makes it harder to stop, which is why you can consider adding electric brakes to provide further assistance when you need to stop.

Your toy hauler will house heavy toys and gears, and even if it is lightweight, it must be made of high quality materials, so that it can protect itself and its cargo against bumpy roads, rain, and other environmental factors.

Bring Your Toys And Gears With Ease!

The toy haulers I’ve presented are all ultra light yet sturdy, which should result in easy hauling, but they also have different hauling capabilities.

Needless to say, even a light toy hauler must provide a balance between hauling capacity and comfort.

Remember, know how much space and what features you need, especially if you have to bring toys and lots of gears.

With that said, you can enjoy both a spacious area for your RVing needs and extra storage for your toys even if you have a light and small toy hauler.

2021 Winnebago Spyder 23FS

ultra light travel trailer toy hauler

Overview: I am honestly a fan of Winnebago products, I have put my trust in the company through some research, they have a clear commitment to high-quality standards.

This shows in the manufacturing process and in the products they install. in their mobile homes.

That dedication is why they keep making products that appear on my “best of” lists. The Spyder 23FS can best be described as rugged, and when an RV is described as lightweight, it means the company has reduced the thickness of the materials or used the best lightweight products to achieve that lightweight.

Here are a few features Winnebago went in the opposite direction:

Steel Huck-Bolt Frame – Safe enough for trailers and Boeings

Loading ramp : This is a sturdy ramp that probably exceeds the weight of anything you are considering loading onto this toy carrier it holds 3,000 pounds, which is 500 pounds more than the total weight of everything you can carry in the vehicle.

This toy carrier is designed for toys such as ATVs. Almost all ATVs weigh less than 1,000 pounds, and some of them weigh less than 500 pounds. As you can imagine, this ramp won’t have a problem with that and It’s a beast.

Bedroom : One thing I love about toy carriers is the abundance of beds. With a large group of people with you and they, all sleep comfortably.

In total, you get a king-size bed in the bedroom, two sofa beds in the living room, and a queen-size bed that sits in the compartment above the dining room. , “King-size bed?”

This is not common with toy haulers this size, in case you didn’t know.

Counter Space : Unfortunately, there isn’t much counter space unless you’re using the stove and sink covers.

This is partly mitigated by solid laminate tables in the swivel area of these counters.

Basic Features:

  • 100 Gallons Gray tank
  • 50 Gallons Black tank
  • Outdoor shower hot/cold
  • Rearview camera ready
  • Large shower
  • Laminated fiberglass
  • Outdoor quick start awning with LED lighting
  • 40-gallon fuel tank

What is a Toy Hauler?

A toy hauler is a specialized RV designed to accommodate the toys of an active family. These RVs are typically equipped with large garage bays that can handle four-wheelers, dirt bikes, jet skis or boats up to 20 feet in length.

Some models even feature front load-outs for convenient access to your toys.

Toy haulers are rather new as far as recreational vehicles go, which means there’s no consensus regarding their proper classification. A survey by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association found that 605 people — out of a sample of 1697 refer to toy haulers as fifth wheel camping trailers.

Another 720 call them travel trailers and 156 calls them truck campers.

What Makes Them Special?

Toy haulers are the ultimate “one-vehicle solution” for outdoor enthusiasts. If you frequently head out to your favorite lake or forest preserve, it doesn’t make sense to haul a trailer full of gear behind the family car.

And if you have an SUV, putting all those toys inside can be inconvenient and cramped. A toy hauler is essentially a self-contained RV that accommodates your bikes, boats, and ATVs while giving you ample living space right inside the cabin.

Toy haulers are typically built between 24 and 39 feet long but feature as much livable square footage as some RVs that are twice their size.

These units will usually measure between 15 and 20 feet wide, making them easy to tow with just about any good-size vehicle. As you’d expect, the length of the toy hauler is largely due to its huge garage bay, though some models do have bunks above or below that space.

The full list of features in these RVs can be quite long. They’re often furnished with generator hookups, residential-style furnaces, air conditioners, flatscreen televisions, leather furniture, and other comforts typically only found inside bigger motorhomes.

Some come fully equipped for off-grid living and even include water filtration systems so that you don’t have to rely on city utilities when camping away from civilization.

What weight can a light toy hauler carry?

A standard toy hauler can carry 4,000 pounds of cargo this for example is the weight of all it can transport, including passengers, toys, fluids, and gears.

All of the toy haulers that I have shown are ultra-light and sturdy. This should make it easy to haul, but also give them different hauling capabilities.

It is important to remember that even light toy haulers must be able to provide both comfort and hauling capacity.

Be aware of how much space you require and what features are required, especially if you plan to bring toys or lots of gear.

Even if your toy hauler is small or light, you will still be able to enjoy a large area for RVing and additional storage.

The 10 Best Lightweight Toy Hauler Travel Trailers (2023 Update)

Whether you’re a seasoned camper with years of experience traveling the backroads of America or a soon-to-be convert to the beauty and freedom offered by the travel trailer lifestyle, a toy hauler gives you endless opportunities for recreation wherever you go.

Camping and RVing are activities that claim the attention and curiosity of thousands of Americans every year.

Not to mention, most of those campers are also hopping on their ATVs, riding dirtbikes, canoeing, and more.

But how do they take all their recreational equipment along?

Enter the toy hauler.

The key is choosing a lightweight toy hauler travel trailer that won’t weigh you down as you hit the open highway or the back roads.

What Are Toy Hauler Travel Trailers For?

Toy hauler travel trailers are just what they sound like: a travel trailer that can also haul your off-roading toys.

While most can accommodate dirtbikes, ATVs, golf carts, and the kids’ bicycles, you’ll also have room in the garage for canoes, kayaks, and other outdoor equipment.

The bottom line?

Toy trailers offer the best compromise between comfort and hauling potential.

But it’s often challenging to find one that won’t overload your hauling vehicle’s tow rating.

If you have no more than a few outdoor toys that you want to protect on your way to the great outdoors, toy haulers provide the optimum middle-ground between the bulky weight of big trailers and the speedy efficiency of a small RV or pop-up.

Fortunately, there are plenty of low-GVWR toy haulers to choose from, so you can load up and head out.

How Light is a Lightweight Toy Hauler Travel Trailer?

Reading through this list, you can see that toy hauler travel trailers run the gamut from super-lightweight to almost heavyweight in traditional RV terms.

The answer is that “lightweight” means something different to everyone, so you’ll need to examine your needs (and existing garage) before choosing the perfect toy hauler to suit.

But, weight is the key figure.

Of course, the question is, which weight?

You’ll see three key figures on toy hauler spec lists: GVWR, UVW, and CCC.

Let’s break them down.

GVWR — Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

This means the total weight of the trailer as you tow it down the road, filled to its maximum weight capacity with toys, gear, and goods.

UVW — Unloaded Vehicle Weight

UVW is your trailer’s curbside weight, before you fill up with potable water (or fill up the black or grey water), gear, or even fuel.

CCC — Cargo Carrying Capacity

How much you can fit in your rig equates to a CCC number.

You’ll add up your fresh water, fuel, equipment or accessories, and toys to get your necessary CCC.

If you overload the CCC, you can expect damage to your trailer, towing vehicle, and potentially your body as you cruise down the highway.

Which Numbers Matter?

Though the two second figures can be handy for shopping purposes, the most important is the GVWR.

This is the combined CCC and UVW figures and gives you the maximum combined and allowable weight for the trailer as you head out on a trip.

Knowing the GVWR helps you choose the right toy hauler for your towing vehicle.

After all, if your truck or SUV’s towing capacity is lower than your dream rig’s GVWR, you either need to revamp your dreams or buy a new truck.

Now that you know what figures to look for, let’s look at a list of the best lightweight toy hauler travel trailers out there.

What Weight is “Lightweight”?

The below toy hauler travel trailer options range from just under 3,000 pounds to just over 10,000.

Clearly, there’s a wide range of what constitutes “lightweight.”

Keep in mind that the average pickup truck can tow anywhere from 3,500 to 7,000 pounds.

Unless you’re attempting to tow a toy hauler with a minivan or sedan, you likely won’t run into too many limits with a V8 pickup truck.

But with a V6, whether pickup or SUV, you’ll want to check out your vehicle’s operating specs to ensure you’re not exceeding its towing capacity.

Exceeding the towing capacity could result in a burned-out transmission, and it’s not worth the risk — so do your research before signing on the dotted line for a new toy hauler.

The Ten Best Lightweight Toy Hauler Travel Trailers

In the last five years, the lightweight trailer community has experienced a boom in the number of highly competent manufacturers offering quality travel trailers to the market.

Check out their specs, GVWR ratings, and garage sizes to pick the best lightweight toy hauler for your next trip.

2021 Winnebago Spyder S23FB

Winnebago offers a trusted and longstanding company name to any potential customer.

The reason is clear: Winnebago has committed itself for many decades to producing trailers with the best standards and remarkable customer service.

Their 2021 version of the Spyder S23FB poses no obstacles to the company’s popular reputation.

It is a solid, reliable vehicle.

The Spyder S23FB has a sturdy steel frame made with the huck-bolt technique.

While the majority of lightweight trailer manufacturers use welding to compose their frames, Winnebago hasn’t cut any corners with their huck bolt construction.

Huck bolts create some of the strongest frames in the industry.

Even Boeing uses huck bolts rather than welding when engineering aircraft.

The Spyder’s durability extends past its internal construction, though.

The cabinetry and the ramp are both secured using processes that very few companies employ.

The wood interior is secure and light, thanks to its placing inside aluminum tubing—ideal for strength and weight.

The ramp can hold as much as 3,000lbs, a testament to the staying power of this trailer.

The Spyder S23FB’s internal capacity isn’t much to scoff at either.

This trailer can sleep six, although you do have to compromise a bit more weight to get the amenities; this is one of the heavier models on our list at a GVWR at just over 10,000 pounds.

  • Long list of amenities
  • Heavier than other lightweight toy haulers

Jayco Octane 161 Travel Trailer

The Jayco Octane 161 markets itself as a workhorse of a trailer, and you’re sure to find that it doesn’t skimp on carrying capacity.

Whether it’s at the expense of creature comforts and intimate spacing, we leave that for you to decide.

The Jayco has an unloaded vehicle weight of 4,570 lbs and a 2,930lbs carrying capacity—a total GVWR of 7,500 pounds.

The Jayco Octane also offers an extensive eight-foot-long garage space, which is at the high end among competitors.

The good news is, the 161 model has lots of food storage and a massive eight-cubic foot french door refrigerator, as well as a two-burner cooktop.

This means that, although buyers might find comfort lacking — especially compared to the VRV and Livin’ Lite trailers — there is plenty of space inside to use liberally for yourself.

Count, among the other comforts, a small toilet with a low-ish 30-amp connection, and you’ll have the full picture of Jayco’s offerings.

Pros

  • Plenty of creature comforts
  • Roomy garage
  • Not the most comfy or inviting interior spaces

Forest River 10.6 No Boundaries

The No Boundaries model offers one of the lightest weight toy haulers on the market.

If you’re looking to get out of the city at a fast clip, and comfort isn’t the highest priority, check out this model from renowned manufacturer Forest River.

It’s important to know right away that the No Boundaries lacks a bathroom and dedicated bedroom space.

While you can opt for a queen size bed, it doesn’t come standard. However, Forest River recognizes the benefits from stripping out their trailer of such comforts: a GVWR of about 3,700 pounds and enough room for a full-sized four-wheeler.

No need to worry about a lack of essential creature comforts, though.

This model comes with an outdoor kitchen. In the end, this model is ideal for RVers and campers with smaller capacity needs.

The No Boundaries is a speedy and generously-spaced toy hauler for smaller toys, and its feature package is pretty impressive.

  • Super-small profile
  • Includes a kitchen and a 30-gallon freshwater tank
  • No bathroom option

inTech Explore Flyer XLT

The inTech Explorer Flyer is one of the lightest, ready-to-go toy haulers on the market.

We would categorize it as “ultra-light” based on its aluminum body, all-tube construction, and welded frame.

This toy hauler is truly the best option if your toys are light and you’re looking to escape familiar territory for the wilderness without making much of a sound.

The inTech has a GVWR of 2,990 pounds and a curbside readiness for RVers who want longevity and reliable rust-proof construction as well as speed and efficiency.

Surprisingly, the inTech boasts quite comfortable interiors.

It has a fully-flexible space that can change from sleeping quarters to cargo to kitchen space.

This toy hauler is also compatible with lots of electronic gear, with 12V outlets, 120V outlets, and plenty of USB ports.

There is also a solar prep station included.

  • Sleeps as many as four.
  • Front overhead storage has extensive capabilities with nets and a 2’’ connection for bikes.
  • Definitely not the plushest and luxurious hauler available
  • Rugged storage design requires some labor to achieve desired personal interior space

Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro

The Rockwood Geo Pro (two toy hauler options) is ideal for campers who are looking for a lightweight trailer with plentiful interior space in the floorplan.

Both 20′ 2″ models offer extensive cargo space for any outdoor equipment and toys you’re likely to bring with you on your trips.

The Rockwood Geo Pro G19FBTH has a giant 6 feet 11-inch garage space, while the G19TH has an 8’6″ cargo area.

Each floor plan offers a different configuration for your toys and daily living.

Both options clock in under 5,000 pounds GVWR.

Either iteration of the Rockwood Geo Pro provides plenty of space and weight for your heavier outdoor toys.

Add to that the three-way fridge, 20k BTU furnace, bath with toilet and shower, and gas grill, and you’re sure to enjoy the comforts as well as the capacity with the newest offering from Forest River.

  • Two floor plan choices
  • Large garage areas in each

Cons

  • Limited configuration options

VRV XTR 614

If you’re most interested in finding a lightweight toy hauler that has a serious carrying capacity, then the VRV XTR 614 (part of the Livin’ Lite Quicksilver ) line offers one of the strongest towing systems that will make for an easy, dependable haul to your outdoor location.

This model is perfect for people who’re looking to carry a four-wheeler and travel with as many as four in the trailer.

It has space for as many as four, a full-size restroom with a stainless sink, and a massively powerful 19,000 BTU furnace.

That makes for optimum comfort.

Yes, the VRV is light, but its ideal audience is for those customers who are looking for a big garage, at a manageable GVWR of 4,900 lbs.

A major drawback is the lack of kitchen appliances and equipment.

There’s not much in the way of creature comforts there.

However, the VRV includes a 50A service if and when you choose to upgrade the appliances and equipment so that the toy hauler grows up to be a fully-functional towing machine.

Of course, it might be tough to find a QuickSilver since KZ stopped selling them from the factory in 2018.

  • Includes a full-size RV restroom and ceramic toilet
  • Multiple floor plans for toy hauling
  • Lacking in creature comforts
  • No longer manufactured new

Quicksilver 7x18FK

Another variation of the Quicksilver, the 7x18FK,  has a capacious and inviting 6.71 x 9.11-foot garage area that is ideal for your collection of RVing toys and equipment.

If you’re looking for a bigger, more industrial design, then this model is the one for you.

It boasts a space length of 22.3 feet — an industry high.

This model also has a 3,680 pound GVWR.

The Quicksilver is constructed with top-of-the-line aluminum materials and sidewall construction to squarely place this hauler in the lightweight category.

Though with up to 22.3 feet of inside space, it will be hard to notice.

The model has a full bathroom included as well as a top-of-the-line kitchen and massive freshwater tank, a refrigerator with a large 6-cubic feet capacity and amperage.

With so many amenities, the Quicksilver might be classified outside the lightweight category.

However, this model cuts weight with its top-of-the-line material made with a softshell.

It includes an expandable ramp door, roof, and vents on the side for ventilation.

In consequence, the trailer doesn’t have an A/C unit.

  • Exceptional trailer height of 9.11 feet
  • Two-burner stovetop surface
  • Full bathroom
  • Lacks an A/C system
  • The furnace isn’t included but is available for purchase individually
  • Not available new

KZ Escape E180TH

The KZ Escape is one of the hidden gems available for those consumers looking for an ideal compromise between an ultra-lightweight construction and an innovative yet spacious interior.

One of the main benefits to storage management and comfort that the manufacturers at KZ have devised is their patented space-saving system.

This super lightweight hauler is one of the best solutions for hauling toys and staying comfortable, since you can slide your gear in without disrupting the sofa/living area.

In all, the KZ has more than enough space for your toys and outdoor equipment.

But the highlight is that it weighs in at a GVWR of 5,000 pounds.

There’s no compromise with the KZ Escape.

Included are luxury porcelain toilets, living spaces, and a kitchen.

What’s the power for the kitchen, you may ask? 8,000 BTUs on the cooktop, 20,000 BTUs on the furnace, and a 38-gallon water tank for large gatherings.

  • Multiple interior options to suit your style
  • 9-foot cargo area

  Cons

  • Single floor plan option (other Escapes are pull trailer only)

Coachmen Catalina Trail Blazer 26TH

The Coachmen Catalina is a perfect model toy hauler if you’re looking to feel like you’re at home whenever you’re on the trail or traveling between outdoor areas.

With a kitchen that is fully integrated with USB ports and 110 outlets, this trailer seeks to crown the list of the most comfortable lightweight cruisers.

The Catalina is a 30-foot long trailer with tons of interior space for all your toys.

Despite its roomy-feeling interior, the trailer has a GVWR of 7900 pounds.

If you’re looking for all the top amenities in a lighter weight trailer, Coachmen provides some of the most luxurious creature comforts.

The farm-style porcelain sink and domestic kitchen appliances and faucets will certainly be sufficient to convince you that the Catalina Trail Blazer is a comprehensive home on the road.

Of course, it is heavier than other toy haulers, so it’s not the most lightweight of them all.

  • Mosaic glass tile backsplash and deep sink exemplify some of the most exclusive features
  • Accessories include rain gutters and drip spouts
  • 7-cubic foot gas/electric fridge included
  • Bulkier than comparable models

Forest River Grey Wolf 22RR

Forest River appears on our list another time for its Grey Wolf toy hauler.

This rig measures 29 feet long and clocks in at a GVWR of just under 7,700 pounds, making it a manageable size for most towing vehicles.

And it’s worth the weight and the expense; the 22RR features a spacious living area and packages to enhance your camping experience.

You’ll find technology packages for efficiency and convenience, plus add-ons like exterior shower kits, skylights, and more.

But the floor model includes enough space to sleep at least four people, with a queen bedroom plus fold-down sofas in the garage area.

In the end, you may not need any upgrades to have a great trip in the Grey Wolf.

Speaking of the garage, it’s a highlight of the build; a seven-foot garage area tops off your interior space.

There’s also a galley kitchen and a corner-oriented bathroom that offers a more luxurious RVing experience than you’ve likely had in a toy hauler.

  • Tons of interior space for living and toys
  • Full features in a lighter-weight package
  • Single floor plan

What to Look for in Lightweight Toy Haulers

There are many elements you should consider before organizing your thoughts on what lightweight toy hauler is right for you.

Ask yourself what kind of gear you’re likely to load on your trailer as well as the dimensions, weight, and size of said toys.

While many consumers will have only one or two pieces of equipment in mind when purchasing a trailer, it’s always a good idea to calculate weight and dimensions in order to come up with an accurate number.

The good news is, most modern trailer units will include enough cargo space to make room for moderately sized toys regardless of weight or size.

Most furniture and equipment included in the above reviews are foldable and portable, further decreasing length measurements.

Nevertheless, we recommend you tabulate your toy’s weight to find the appropriate trailer.

You should also measure toy hauler lengths, as they vary widely.

Length also tends to correlate with weight.

Final Thoughts

All the toy haulers included in our list above present some of the most reliable and well-engineered structures you’re liable to find on the market today.

The fact remains that you’ll have to do your due diligence when deciding on the optimal model that can fit all your toys without dragging your pickup’s back end along the asphalt.

With that said, adventures in the wild frontier remain limitless for the readiest and most prepared travelers.

There are dozens of qualified lightweight models on the market, whether you want a 3,000-pound maximum weight or can manage a toy hauler of 10K+ pounds.

With this list, we hope to equip the most knowledgeable RVers and campers with the information necessary to purchase the best lightweight toy hauler travel trailers for their needs.

The 10 Best Travel Trailer Toy Haulers of 2023

Published on July 26th, 2023 by Rene Agredano This post was updated on August 17th, 2023

Ready to pack more fun into your RV adventures? The best travel trailer toy haulers can help you do it. Some are ultralight, some are ultra big, but all let you bring along your favorite outdoor toys. Maybe you’ll haul an ATV for off-road escapades, a dirtbike for adrenaline-rush rides, or bicycles for serene pedals around the campsite. When you carry your outdoor gear along for the ride, the options for things to do while camping are practically endless.

New to the toy hauler lifestyle? Here are a few quick facts about toy hauler RVs, followed by a short list of 2023’s best travel trailer toy haulers for SUVs and trucks.

Travel Trailer Toy Hauler Basics

You’ll find many similarities between travel trailers and toy haulers . But toy haulers differ because they have a comfortable and spacious cargo area for gear. Toy haulers also have a loading ramp to help get motorcycles and heavy outdoor gear inside. Manufacturers make a variety of toy haulers in different RV classes , such as a toy hauler motorhome, toy hauler fifth wheel, and toy hauler travel trailers.

Any class of toy hauler RVs are awesome. They are always a perfect match for adventure-seeking families, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone whose heart skips a beat at the mention of a ride, paddle, or other rugged backcountry day trip. Toy haulers give you the luxury of spontaneously deciding to hit biking trails or go kayaking. When you always have your favorite gear along, your choices for RVing fun are practically endless.

Do Toy Haulers Cost More?

Like other RV varieties, travel trailer toy hauler prices vary dramatically in price. You’re looking at anywhere from $37,000 for a basic model, while high-end versions can sail past the $80,000 mark. This higher overall cost compared to conventional travel trailers reflects the added functionality that toy hauler RVs bring to your travels.

What’s the Best Toy Hauler Tow Vehicle?

We hate to dissapoint you, but this question depends on too many factors to say there is one “best toy hauler tow vehicle.” That’s because the best toy hauler tow vehicle is the one that has a towing capacity (GVWR) which is perfectly paired with the weight of your preferred toy hauler.

How much your car, truck or other vehicle can tow depends on the type of vehicle and the towing options on the car or truck.   A general rule of thumb: for a front wheel drive car or small SUV is 1500 pounds a mid-size all-wheel drive SUV or pickup 3000 pounds a full size SUV or half-ton pickup truck 5000 pounds or more.   The weight limits can vary by large margins depending on how the car or truck is equipped and it is up to you to confirm the limits for your car or truck. More Travel Trailer Toy Hauler Specifications to Consider

It’s fun to look at the many different toy hauler floor plans available. Like any RV, the layout is an important consideration when deciding what rig is best for you. And when it comes to a travel trailer toy hauler layout, you also need to evaluate the balance between living and cargo space. Is there enough of each to meet your needs?

The floor plan, appliances, and sleeping quarters are all worth considering in any RV. But safety considerations are even more critical when evaluating the best travel trailer toy haulers for your camping needs. Take a close look at these specifications before deciding on a model:

Cargo Carrying Capacity

The cargo carrying capacity is an important number. It’s the maximum weight that a travel trailer toy hauler can safely carry when it’s being towed. This figure includes the combined weight of all holding tank fluids, propane, inside and outside gear, food, etc. If you exceed a toy hauler’s cargo carrying capacity, your safety is at risk.

Ramp Door Rating

This refers to the maximum weight the ramp door can handle when loading and unloading toys, such as an ATV, dirtbike, or other heavy equipment. Ramp doors are designed to withstand a certain weight load. Exceeding it can lead to damage or even failure of the ramp, posing potential risks to both people and the equipment. You must know know the weight of your toys to ensure that they’re within the ramp door rating of the toy hauler you’re considering. Finding this rating figure requires deep digging into specification sheets, as most manufacturers don’t highlight it.

Tie-Down Points

Look around a toy hauler and evaluate the number, location, and type of tie-down points for your gear. Tie-downs keep your gear safe while your toy hauler is moving. They prevent damage to the RV, and your equipment. And tie-downs also prevent gear from shifting around, which causes balance issues that can affect the toy hauler’s handling on the road. Any toy hauler should have conveniently located, well-anchored, and plentiful tie-down points for your gear. Like ramp door ratings, you will need to research tie down points to find out this information.

Now that you’re more familiar with travel trailer toy hauler basics, let’s get into the fun part: the best toy haulers of 2023! Here are some of our favorite models now showing at a dealer near you.

5 Best Lightweight Toy Haulers

Small Toy Hauler

It isn’t surprising that many potential owners search for toy haulers that their current vehicles can tow.

The majority of manufacturers have responded to this demand, and there are many options available. Here are a few of the best lightweight toy hauler travel trailers on the market.

2021 Best Lightweight Toy Haulers

2021 Winnebago Spyder 23FS 2021 Jayco Octane 161 Travel Trailer ATC Aluminum 8.5’ x 24’ Forest River 10.6 No Boundaries – A Cheaper and Lighter Option 2021 inTech Explorer Flyer

2021 Winnebago Spyder 23FS

Winnebago Spyder

In all honesty, I’m a fan of Winnebago products. I’ve come to trust the company through quite a bit of research. They have a clear commitment to high-quality standards. This can be seen in the manufacturing process and in the products that choose to install into their mobile homes. That commitment is why they constantly seem to make products that show up on my “Best of” lists.

The Spyder 23FS can best be described as solid. Most of the time, when a mobile home is described as lightweight, that means that the company shaved down the thickness of the materials or used low-quality products to achieve that lightweight. Here are a few places where Winnebago went in the opposite direction.

Steel Huck Bolt Frame – safe enough for semi-trucks and Boeings

While a steel frame will sound solid enough, the Spyder 23FS has what is called a huck bolt frame. In modern-day designs, there are two main types of frames that mobile homes tend to use. One type is welded and the other uses huck bolts.

On instinct, you might believe that welding would be superior. Surprisingly, it isn’t. The welding process weakens both of the metals at the place where they were joined. The huck bolt leaves a stronger product, and that is why huck bolts are chosen over welding in the construction of Boeing airplanes, semi-trucks, and school buses.

The cabinetry is very secure in the Winnebago mobile homes. In the Spyder, wood is inserted inside of the aluminum tubing that is located in the frame of the toy hauler. Then the cabinets are secured to the wood inside of that tubing. It is super solid. It can hold a lot of weight, and it won’t wobble while it is doing it.

Loading Ramp

This is a tough ramp that will likely exceed that weight of anything that you could ever consider loading into this toy hauler . It is rated to hold 3,000 pounds which is 500 pounds higher than the combined weight of everything that you might load into the vehicle. A toy hauler is meant for toys such as ATVs. Almost all ATVs weigh less than 1,000 pounds, and some of them are less than 500 pounds. As you might guess, this ramp will not have any issues with that. It’s a beast, and it is built way stronger than the standards of Winnebago’s competition.

Sleeping Quarters

One thing that I love about toy haulers is the abundance of beds. You can bring a large group with you and sleep them all comfortably. In total, you get a king-sized bed in the bedroom, two sofa beds in the lounge, and one queen bed that is located in the compartment above the dinette. Did you notice that I said, “king-sized bed?” That’s not a common feature for a toy hauler of this size, in case you didn’t know.

Counter Space

Unfortunately, there isn’t a ton of counter space unless you use the covers for the sink and stove. This is partially alleviated by the solid laminated tables within swivel distance of those counters.

2021 Jayco Octane 161 Travel Trailer

Jayco Octane

Tall and Wide

Jayco decided to go a different direction with this unusual trailer. Rather than building another long toy hauler, they decided to explore the other dimensions: height and width. Front-to-back the Octane 161 is only 20 feet, 8 inches long; the garage space takes up 11 feet, 7 inches of that space. Width-wise, you get 8 ½ feet of space which is good and comparable to a larger RV. The height of 10 feet, 8 inches, however, is where this trailer shines and has useful implications throughout the unit. I tell you exactly how as I describe each of the rooms.

The Bathroom

As you might guess, the bathroom isn’t what most would describe as spacious. There was just enough room for a bathtub/shower, a toilet, and a mirrored medicine cabinet, so you will need to use the kitchen sink to wash your hands. One major positive to the bathroom comes from the height of the trailer. Even if you are seven feet tall, there will be enough space for you to shower comfortably.

The queen sofa beds are electric convertibles. When you need the space, they can flatten into their bed forms and be raised to the ceiling to provide space for the toys. If you are transporting something a bit taller, you can store the bed along the walls for more height.

The Storage

Obviously, you get storage for large items. The small storage, however, definitely takes a hit. This is designed for a fun adventure, and not to be a full-time living situation. There are no hanging closets, cabinets are very limited, and the dinette doesn’t have the storage space that mobile homes typically offer. The kitchen cabinets are basically it, so you will want to pack your clothing into some luggage.

Little Touches of Quality

Okay, back to the positives. Some companies can be underhanded and sneaky. They’ll find an area where no-one is looking, lower the quality, and save a few bucks. Jayco has the opposite approach. They find those areas, and then they give you something extra. Here are a few of them that I would like you to see:

  • Tires and Wheels are best in class – Goodyears
  • Bar-Lock Latches with Keyed Ramp Door Locks
  • 8 cubic feet double door refrigerator
  • Warranty is double the average length
  • Large stainless steel sink
  • Fresh: 53.2 Gallons
  • Grey: 28 Gallons
  • Black: 45.4 Gallons
  • Interior Height: 7 Feet, 5 Inches
  • Exterior Height: 10 Feet, 8 Inches

  • Gross Vehicle Weight: 7,500 Pounds

ATC Aluminum 8.5’ x 24’

ATC Toy Hauler

I’ve been pretty impressed with the ATC toy haulers. They are undoubtedly a superior manufacturer. This is reflected in the price, but it is also reflected in the depreciation.

The Aluminum Body is Lightweight and Waterproof

The aluminum bodies of these toy haulers aren’t susceptible to water damage like the lower-priced units. If water somehow gets into the crevices, there will be no rust, mildew or delamination and warping. In one YouTube video, the ATC spokesman states that owners can take a hose to wash out the unit. That is quite a unique feature for this type of product.

Azdel Panelling Is Waterproof, Insulative, and Lightweight

The walls are also covered in Azdel paneling. It is a composite material that is just as impervious to water damage as aluminum. Hanwa Azdel built this material to be an improvement over the wood that, to this point, has been the standard material for mobile homes. They succeeded.

Its resistance is commonly demonstrated by placing a piece of this product into a jar of water and leaving it year after year. As the years go by, the product still looks almost brand new. It’s a game-changer within the industry, and it is a relief to the owners.

The Azdel paneling is also twice as insulative as wood and it is half the weight. Since you are here looking for a lightweight toy hauler, I’m guessing that is a nice incentive.

Configurable

This toy hauler is reconfigurable. Unlike most, the table and beds are not permanently attached to a specific point of the room. Each of those pieces locks onto a track system that extends through the length of that cabin. Whenever you like, you can remove or reposition those pieces to other points. It can change as your needs change.

Depreciation

The upfront costs of the ATC trailers are higher than other trailers of comparable length.

It’s understandable if it is outside of the budget, but you should know that it is worth the investment. Most trailers rapidly lose their value. This one won’t. Because they age beautifully, the value will drop very slowly. One representative put it this way, typically you will determine the rate of depreciation of a coach in years and calculate the price accordingly. The ATC toy haulers hold up well enough that you start thinking of depreciation in terms of decades instead of years.

Large Bathroom

It surprised me how large the bathroom actually is. There’s plenty of counter space, cabinets, a full-length mirror, and a very tall shower, and a toilet with room to stretch. There is a price for such a spacious room, but I’ll get into that in just a moment.

Great Storage

When I say great storage, I am comparing that relative to other short toy haulers. The kitchen and the bathroom both have plenty of cabinets. There is also some nice sized exterior storage.

You might wonder how they fit a large bathroom and lots of storage into such a small toy hauler. Well…There’s no bedroom. I understand how that can be a major downside to those that like their own space. That is a pretty big concession. However, depending on the needs of the owner, it might be worth it.

Lighter Option

If this 5,000-pound unit is still too heavy, there is one cheaper, lighter option. ATC has a 20’ toy hauler that is almost $3,000 cheaper and roughly 500 pounds lighter.

  • Grey: 45 Gallons
  • Black: 45 Gallons
  • Interior Height: 7 Feet, 6 Inches
  • Exterior Height: 11 Feet
  • Base Weight: 5,000 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight: 11,440 Pounds
  • Dimmable Lights
  • Two-burner stovetop
  • Average Price: $41,530

Forest River 10.6 No Boundaries – A Cheaper and Lighter Option

Forest River No Boundaries Toy Hauler

I prefer to stay away from Forest River because I’ve read too many stories of their RVs breaking down and Forest River not backing their warranties. I’ve also seen many owners standing up for the company and their products; claiming that they never had any issues. I believe this inconsistency is partially a factor of luck determined by who was working that day. If you look at the employee reviews for the company, you will notice a lot of employees state that the quality of the work varies greatly from one team to the next. According to these employees, the team leaders do not get a lot of training and they are not closely monitored.

Whether worth it or not, there is an uncontested difference between the standards, materials, and the overall price of a company such as Winnebago or Jayco and Forest River. However, that isn’t necessarily unexpected. The Forest River products are generally created for a lower price-point, so comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges.

They are the bargain brand of the RV world. The materials that they use are often, but not always, cheaper. However, the money that they saved is reflected in a cheaper final price. You will pay less. If you need to keep the costs down, then they might just be the perfect starting point…just get it inspected before you purchase and prepare to be a handyman.

Okay, I gave the warning, and now I can tell you about the things that make this unit a potentially fantastic option.

Two Story Layout

Rather than sleeping inside the hauler, Forest River has opted to add a huge tent to the top of it. I’ve seen this structure on a few other units, and I gotta say that I love it. It’s a clever use of space and allows you to devote most of the inside space of the 10.6NB to storing the toys.

On the Top Level

The tent is large and holds a foam pad that stretches from end to end. Three people can sleep inside the tent, but their combined weight should not exceed 500 lbs. That is the maximum weight that the roof is rated to hold.

Speaking of the roof, it is made of a TPO membrane that is found on most trailers. It is not the best option out there, but it is an improvement to the EPDM rubber roof in one clear way. Many RVs can bake in the sun, and that is especially true for rubber roofs. The TPO membrane reflects more of the sun than its counterpart, so you won’t be as hot on those calm summer days.

Rhino-Rack System

A Rhino-Rack is attached to the roof and holds up the tent. It’s a secure and sturdy piece of equipment, and that stability should help to ease the minds of travelers that don’t like heights. It’s also very customizable. Currently, there are over 250 additional attachments that you can purchase to modify the Rhino-Rack to fit your needs.

Azdel Composite Paneling

I already discussed this product earlier. If you skipped over it, here’s a quick recap. Azdel paneling is almost invulnerable to water damage. You can park a trailer at the bottom of a lake for years, and the Azdel paneling on the trailer will still look brand new. It is also lighter than wood and more insulative.

In this floorplan, the garage/lounge space is 5’ x 6’10.” It’s not the largest space, but moving the sleeping quarters above the unit opens up a lot of room.

The unit is so small, but that makes it easy to get some nice airflow between the two small windows, a large magnetically attached net at the ramp entrance, and the Fantastic Fan. The fantastic fan can force 900 cubic air per minute throughout the trailer.

You have the optional upgrade to add cubed cushions into the trailer. They can piece together to form additional bedding inside the trailer.

There is a small amount of storage inside the trailer. As part of that storage, you do have a decent-sized hanging closet, some netted storage, and a short closed compartment inside the floor. If you choose to purchase the cushions, you can use this area as a hidden storage compartment. If you want a place a bit more secure for wallets and cash, this could be a decent spot to hide them.

A Large 280° Awning

A full awning extends over a large portion of the trailer. It covers the outdoor kitchen and the ramp. It is easy to set up and easy to take down. If it doesn’t suit your needs, there are other awnings available.

Dinette Package (Optional Upgrade)

On these smaller units, the kitchen becomes optional. However, I love my food. If I am going to make a habit of driving places for some weekend fun, I want a refrigerator and a stove. That makes the dinette option less of a choice. This Dometic refrigerator is essentially a top-of-the-line powered cooler. They’re fantastic and will eliminate your need for endless bags of ice. Not needing the ice means that your food won’t get soggy. You can set the temperature and reach temperatures that are far below freezing. You will also get a two-burner stove with an LP quick connect.

2021 inTech Flyer Explore

InTech Flyer Explore Toy Hauler

No Bathroom and No Water

I got to say this upfront. The Flyer doesn’t have a bathroom or water. I know, I’ve probably lost most of you. This will only fit the needs of a specific segment of the audience. For those that are still reading, this is honestly a pretty cool hauler. It’s a lightweight little thing, but it holds a lot.

Sleeping Space vs Cargo Space

Depending on the configuration, you will be able to sleep 2 to 6 people. There are three potential places to sleep, but one of them is an optional upgrade. If you choose to upgrade and increase your sleeping capacity, you will also require the upgrade that swaps the ramp door for the double doors. That’s not going to be as convenient for running your toys into the hauler, but you can always buy a detached ramp from Amazon.

If you don’t bring any toys with you on the trip, the cargo area can be used as a third sleeping space. Its dimensions are 5’9” wide and 8’1” long.

The Kitchenette (Optional Upgrade)

There is an optional slide-out kitchenette if you want a cooking space. I don’t want to mislead any of you; this isn’t like an RV room with a kitchen inside of it. This is an exterior kitchen area that slides out of a compartment of the Flyer. It contains a two-burner propane stove, a 120-volt refrigerator/cooler, and a small storage compartment.

If you have motorcycles this could still work out because the entrance is relatively low to the ground.

Article Updated February 13, 2024

There are almost as many 2024 travel trailer toy haulers as there are things you could want to haul. Is lightweight and easy to tow the most important?

Perhaps sleeping accommodations and cargo capacity top your list of needed features. There are so many options and layouts in travel trailer toy haulers that it can be hard to choose.

There are also cute little retro toy haulers that you can easily tow. Of course, there is everything in between these opposites too. No matter what your needs, there is a perfect travel trailer toy hauler for you.

Are Toy Haulers Heavier Than Travel Trailers?

Another common misconception about the difference between toy haulers and travel trailers is weight. Many toy haulers have aluminum frames, so they are becoming lighter than they were before.

Conversely, many travel trailers now boast 2-3 slide-outs making them heavier than ever before. Also, heavier conventionally built stick and tin travel trailers are making a comeback in today’s Remote Period (2020- Present). This industry evolution means that travel trailers are no longer universally lighter.

Similarly, interior amenities offered by toy haulers have also evolved. Some toy haulers have amenities so impressive they have become even more expensive than travel trailers. One is not better or worse because travel trailers and toy haulers each have their own distinct benefits.

Are Toy Haulers Built Better Than Travel Trailers?

Travel Trailer being built in a factory

Toy Haulers are not necessarily better than travel trailers, just a little different. Essentially they are all built in the same factories using the same core parts. The debate between toy haulers vs. travel trailers really comes down to you and your preferences.

For boondocking, you may want a toy hauler because they typically have heavy-duty chassis, better suspension, and stronger axles. If you like traditional campgrounds and can fit your recreational vehicle in the bed of your truck you may prefer a travel trailer.

There are also some tradeoffs in the interior space of these two different types of campers. Travel trailers typically have more cabinet storage space and they are more likely to have bunkrooms. While toy haulers, on the other hand, have to sacrifice some of those things in favor of garage space.

Speaking of garage space, Modern Era (2008- Present) toy haulers have come a long way in terms of dressing up this area. Now garages on toy haulers often come with drop-down bunks and sofas. Sometimes the floor of these spaces even looks and flows seamlessly to the rest of the camper.

Even the smell of fuel is not an issue anymore with campers like the Keystone RV Carbon 36 and other toy haulers like it. There are now drains in the floor and doors that divide the garage space from the remainder of the coach. You no longer have to worry about the camper feeling like a garage once the toys are offloaded.

Toy haulers also have large rear doors that allow you to load and unload vehicles. An underappreciated benefit of this feature is the back deck area that the ramp becomes.

Are Travel Trailer Toy Haulers Good For Kids And Pets?

You don’t always think of toy haulers as being great options for families with young kids or dogs. But this deck is a great way to get some fresh air without having to worry about anyone wandering off.

For those who travel for dog rescue or compete in the show dog circuit , travel trailer toy hauler garages are perfect. With the proper climate control, pet kennels can be secured properly or the garage can be the best pre-show prep space before your champion needs to do their best work in front of the judges.

Which Toy Hauler is the Best Quality?

Toy Hauler with the garage door down and a motorcycle and the mountains in the background

After all this, you might be asking, which toy hauler is the best quality? I would argue that they all have their advantages.

For example, the smallest travel trailer toy hauler on our list, the Happier Camper HC1, boasts a fiberglass double hull. This makes it both extremely lightweight and waterproof. Not only that, but the floorplan flexibility in this small toy hauler travel trailer is second to none.

Other travel trailer toy haulers, like the Glacier Ice House 16DR, have a very specialized purpose. The insulation and furnace BTU capacity might not matter so much in a regular toy hauler but in a fish house toy hauler, the quality of those factors is very important.

If you have a large family, you might be especially concerned with sleeping accommodations. You will be looking for a travel trailer toy hauler that uses its interior space efficiently. The KZ Sportster might be the best quality travel trailer toy hauler for you because of the sleeping options.

Another consideration when choosing the best quality toy hauler travel trailer for you is weight. Lightweight campers have excellent benefits when it comes to towing and fuel efficiency. Quality by this definition will mean an aluminum or fiberglass framed camper.

Perhaps you want to be able to transport multiple recreational vehicles. Carrying capacity, axle strength, and garage space might be the quality benchmark you choose to use.

Once you determine what features are most important to you, the best quality travel trailer toy hauler for your needs will quickly emerge.

Very helpful and this article confirmed our choice of going with a toy hauler. The extra strong suspension and axels along with the lift gate patio for our dogs sealed the deal! We are also looking into the aluminum framing for lite weight! Thank you!

Toy haulers are amazing rigs to consider purchasing if you are an outdoor enthusiast. From ATVs to kayaks, toy haulers are designed to bring the entire family and your gear.

But many toy haulers are large and difficult to tow , which means the average tow vehicle and family shouldn’t purchase one without upgrading their truck first. Thankfully, I’m here to tell you about some of the best small and lightweight toy haulers available today!

Before we get to the rigs, let’s go over what exactly a toy hauler is, and what you should consider before making your final purchase.

What Is A Toy Hauler?

You may be wondering what a toy hauler is, and how it may differ from traditional fifth wheels and travel trailers. While it is most commonly a towable rig, there are some key differences that make a toy hauler what it is. A toy hauler usually has a rear garage-style door with a ramp, capable of opening fully. This allows RVers to store and unload various wheeled vehicles and other recreational items such as canoes and kayaks.

The interior of these rigs is half garage, half living space, with many storable furniture options so there’s always room for all of your toys. Many RVers pack ATVs, golf carts, and mountain bikes inside of their toy haulers. Having the large garage bay door and ramp on the back of your rig allows for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Having a ramp also usually makes toy haulers safer than other trailers in terms of moving your larger recreational vehicles. But can you get a toy hauler that is small and lightweight enough to be towed by a lesser tow vehicle? And what about the weight limits of your cargo ? Let’s go over a few more important considerations for these RVs.

What To Look For In A Small And Lightweight Toy Hauler

Are you curious about what you should be looking for in a small and lightweight toy hauler? Let’s go over some of my top considerations before taking a look at some awesome options.

Overall Weight

Obviously, you’re shopping for a small and lightweight toy hauler for a reason. The overall weight of your rig should be a top consideration, and thankfully this number is usually readily available from the toy hauler’s manufacturer. If you aren’t aware of your tow vehicle’s recommended towing capacity, you should figure these facts out before you begin shopping.

While it’s possible to weigh your new travel trailer at home , you never want to get something too heavy for your tow vehicle! The overall weight of your trailer, while it is empty, is one thing. You are buying a toy hauler to no doubt carry heavy accessories, so the weight when your trailer is full should be the main number for you to consider.

While there are many travel trailers out there under 4,000 pounds , this number does not usually include cargo. Buying a toy hauler means considering the overall weight of both the trailer and its heavy cargo!

Storage Space For Toys

Your compact toy hauler will still be designed with its own garage space, or storage area for your recreational toys. Knowing how much space you need for all of your outdoor enthusiast gear is important before you get shopping.

There are many different sizes of garages, despite all of the toy haulers on this list being compact. You should measure your ATVs, kayaks, bikes, and whatever else you plan to bring with you so there’s a rough estimate of your preferred garage layout.

Many toy haulers prioritize their interior garage storage, but some layouts may have a more spread-out living area. This comes down to your personal preference as well- some RVers may be looking for ample toy space, and others may want a bigger bedroom or kitchen!

Overall Length And Height

The overall length and height of your toy hauler matter , especially if you are searching for a small and lightweight option. Keeping things compact and low to the ground will not only allow you to tow safely, but it will be much easier to park too!

While a smaller toy hauler may not feel as spacious as longer rigs, choosing a more compact RV is usually not a bad thing. If you are new to towing in general, choosing a shorter toy hauler could be a blessing in disguise!

Opting for a longer toy hauler may be necessary if you want to bring along the whole family , but keep the weight limits of your tow vehicle in mind. A shorter rig always translates to a lighter rig, so you may need to sacrifice a few feet in order to tow your gear safely.

Layouts And Floor Plans

Choosing a toy hauler with an excellent layout is key. This can be tricky if you don’t know what you’re looking for or if you’re shopping for an RV for the first time. However, you no doubt have a few preferences in mind, and hopefully, you know what gear you plan on packing.

Some floor plans prioritize the garage area of the toy hauler- this is why you’re buying one of these types of RVs after all! However, this doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a nice living area and kitchen when the toys have been unloaded.

Keep in mind your wants and needs, especially if you are planning to bring a large group of people camping with you. A layout with your needs in mind is key to enjoying any camping experience to the fullest.

Bathroom Options

Having an RV with a bathroom is important to many consumers. Choosing a small and lightweight toy hauler with a bathroom is no doubt an important decision to make. But how small and compact can you get a trailer while still having space for a bathroom onboard ?

This can be trickier than you think, especially if you’re searching for a dry bath with ample storage space. Getting all of your needs into one compact RV is most likely easier said than done.

However, bathrooms are usually a priority in RV layouts, so there will most likely be one onboard. Keep in mind it will no doubt be smaller than you are used to. RVs are amazing when it comes to their engineering and storage solutions, but they aren’t miracle workers!

Pros And Cons Of Small And Lightweight Toy Haulers

Wondering what’s so good about small and lightweight toy haulers? Perhaps you’ve already considered some of the possible cons of these types of rigs . Let’s go over some positives and negatives you may not have thought about yet.

Pro: Lightweight Options Available

If you own a tow vehicle with a smaller capacity than most, you are no doubt shopping around for a lightweight rig. Thankfully, there are a good number of small and lightweight toy haulers, perfect for a wide variety of tow vehicles.

The weight of these types of rigs can add up fast, so knowing the dry weight of your toy hauler is light can be a comfort to many RV owners.

Con: Not Everyone Or Everything Will Fit

Since toy haulers prioritize bringing gear over people, you may find that it’s difficult to find sleeping arrangements for the whole family. The more compact and light your toy hauler is, the less likely you will be able to fit a large group and their cargo.

This can be a deal breaker for many families, hoping to bring their ATVs and kiddos. It is definitely something to consider before you shop for a lightweight toy hauler- you may have to go bigger than you originally expected.

Bringing toys is the entire point of a toy hauler, but the special garage space necessary to fit these vehicles and accessories can leave a lot to be desired in terms of sleeping space.

Pro: Small Toy Haulers Have Great Floor Plans

Given that small toy haulers prioritize versatile living areas, you’ll no doubt find that small toy haulers have great floor plans. They are made to have flexible living areas so it’s possible to properly store gear as well as relax.

Many small and lightweight toy haulers have movable tables and seating arrangements, meaning you will have more flexibility when it comes time to settle down for the night. This is a great perk for many RVers.

Con: The Living Areas Tend To Be Simple

Given toy haulers primarily exist for the specialized garage space, you may find the various living areas lacking. Many compact toy hauler trailers have completely collapsible furniture, almost exclusively.

This means even the master bed could be something that folds up and stores. This can be a perk to some RVers, but a downfall for others. Many RVers are looking for a permanent bedroom or sleeping area , and this doesn’t even include the living room.

Most living rooms on toy haulers are also garage spaces, so furniture and finishings are often limited. This can make an RV feel even less like home, which could be something that you dislike.

Pro: The Smaller The Rig, The Easier It Is To Drive

Going with a smaller toy hauler may seem like a setback in terms of living space, but you will no doubt notice the difference between a smaller rig when it comes time to hit the road. A smaller towable RV is always better than a bigger one, mainly from a safety perspective.

When dealing with a large fifth wheel or travel trailer, you don’t have to worry about your overall tongue weight- everything’s heavy! But that definitely doesn’t equal safety. A smaller rig will always be easier to control, no matter how your weight is distributed.

Con: Toy Haulers Are Tricky To Weigh

Speaking of distributing weight, toy haulers can be a bit trickier to weigh properly. Most toy hauler cargo holds are toward the back of the trailer, meaning an uneven amount of weight is often placed toward the back rather than on the tongue .

With your trailer’s central axis in mind, you may struggle to evenly weight your toy hauler, especially if this is your first time towing anything. Keep your gear in mind when you begin packing, and know that you may have to rearrange to keep your rig safe while driving.

Good Brands Of Small And Lightweight Toy Haulers

There are many different RV brands on the market today. How can you know which brands are reliable and good? Let’s go over some of the best toy hauler manufacturers out there, especially lightweight rigs.

Forest River

A very well-regarded RV brand, Forest River makes a few compact toy haulers worth mentioning. They are known for their many floor plan options and reliable customer service. As a brand, Forest River racks up impressive RV sales each year, and each is at a relatively affordable price too . Like any RV, completing appropriate annual maintenance is always a good idea and will help prolong the life of an RV.

A division of Thor RVs, KZ has just celebrated its 50th anniversary in the RV manufacturing business. Their toy haulers are innovative, and they offer both lightweight and luxurious toy hauler options. The brand has earned itself a reputation for reliability and high quality that’s a big competitor in the RV industry. KZ offers RVs at a range of prices and has many different options available to choose from.

Known for quality hardware, both inside and out, Jayco is one of the best RV brands out there. Their toy haulers are unique and hand-crafted, while still maintaining an affordable budget. Jayco manufacture and sell such a high volume of RVs and that’s one of the reasons they are able to keep prices lower than many other RV brands out there.

Livin’Lite is one of the premier brands of lightweight toy haulers, given that this is all that they choose to manufacture. Their aluminum frames are ultra-light as well as durable, giving you a toy hauler for years to come.

What Toys Fit Best In Small And Lightweight Toy Haulers?

If you are wondering what a toy hauler is best at hauling, you’ve come to the right place. Toy haulers can bring just about anything, but they are a popular choice if you own any of the following:

  • Motorcycles
  • Mountain bikes or other bicycles
  • Kayaks, canoes, or stand-up paddleboards
  • Mopeds or segways

This is only a small list of what you can bring along with you inside a toy hauler, and even lightweight toy hauler trailers have large weight capacities. The garage areas are designed to be completely open so that you can fit a wide variety of things.

You should always check the weight of your gear before hitting the road, but a toy hauler is one of the best rigs out there for bringing everything along with you! If you love the outdoors and have the toys to prove it, you should consider a toy hauler over many other rigs.

10 Best Small And Lightweight Toy Haulers

Feeling confident in your wants and needs for a toy hauler? If you are ready to shop for a small and lightweight toy hauler, let’s take a look at some of the best options on the market today.

Best Overall: Forest River XLR Hyperlite

This XLR Hyperlite toy hauler by Forest River has been awarded ‘Travel Trailer Toy Hauler of the Year’ from RV News, so you can trust it gets our best overall spot! Coming in at just under 30 feet with many perks, this rig is perfect for many toy hauler shoppers.

It’s all in the name of this versatile, lightweight rig- it’s light and maneuverable, with the capacity for all of my adventure gear, additional RV equipment, dog kit, and more. I love that Forest River has a model to suit any need, whether that be an enclosed garage, open passageway, or outside deck, as it means they build their RVs with all different RVers in mind.

The overall structure of this toy hauler gives me the peace of mind I know I need when I’m towing anything on the road. It’s built strong and durable, with a chassis and suspension package including MORryde CRE3000 suspension addition, aluminum wheels, Dexter EZ lube axles, spare tire, and Nev-R-Adjust brakes. There are six different floorplans for the XLR Hyperlite, with hitch weights of 1,230 lbs to 1,785 lbs which gives great freedom and choice.

It can be hard to know what type of rig to look for, so having a variety of floorplans is awesome for helping you figure out exactly what you need and want from a small and lightweight toy hauler. Forest River toy haulers are affordable, ½ ton and ¾ ton towable, and their quality laminated products are easy on the tow vehicle, very functional, and offer superior construction.

There’s no sacrificing on space, features, or luxury inside the XLR, which is something I often worry about with toy haulers. Each floorplan is slightly different from one another, but all of them have ample RVing features such as a bathroom, multiple comfortable sleeping arrangements, and a kitchen fit with a fridge, stovetop, sink, microwave oven , and substantial storage.

Produced in an exclusive toy hauler facility, the Forest River XLR line boasts the longest-running legacy of Sport Utility Trailer production. I’ve heard about Forest River’s customer service before, and although I’m yet to require a call to the team, they are known for being helpful and supportive which is exactly what I want from an RV manufacturer!

Other internal features include LED lighting, ducted A/C and heat, Dexter axles, solid wood and raised panel cabinetry, roof with 3/8″ decking, standard fully enclosed underbelly, nightshades, 5,000-pound cargo tie downs, two-tone grey exterior, optional party deck, and friction hinge doors are just some of the offerings on a Hyper Lite Toy Hauler.

Best On A Budget: Keystone Hideout

RVing may be cheaper than renting, but that doesn’t mean RVs aren’t a big initial investment! It’s reassuring to know toy haulers don’t have to cost an arm and a leg, and the Keystone Hideout is a fantastic example of a budget-friendly rig. This RV has everything I want from a toy hauler, and all on a frame ranging from 20 to 29 ft long. The price is clearly a standout for me with this rig, but Keystone hasn’t held back on internal features which makes this toy hauler an even bigger steal.

Toy haulers are all about bringing on adventure gear to make RVing even more fun, and for me this means parking my rig up and heading out on camping trips every once in a while. Since the Keystone Hideout has an 8′ ramp door and a 6.5′ garage with reinforced floor and two tie-downs, there’s ample space for camping gear, bikes, kayaks, and even an ATV or similar.

The weight capacity isn’t anything too spectacular at 1,500 pounds, but it’s enough for carrying a substantial amount of kit. With a bigger budget and larger toy hauler , it wouldn’t be difficult to find a rig capable of carrying more, but the Hideout is plenty for me. The inside is impressive too, as there’s a dedicated bedroom with a queen bed in the smallest Hideout model, as well as a dry bath which is pretty rare to find with small travel trailers!

There are even a couple of decor options too so I’m able to bring a bit of personality to the rig, however, it would be nice to have a few more interior decor options! Although I love solo RVing and traveling with my partner, it’s fun to have friends and family visit, and this is possible thanks to the Hideout.  I’m able to sleep up to four in the smallest model with a foldable sofa and removable dining table. While the next floor plan is for a longer and heavier toy hauler, there’s the ability to sleep 6-8 individuals!

Year after year, Keystone RV’s experienced team delivers the Built for the Long Haul quality I expect and exclusive innovations I struggle to find elsewhere. With included 1 and 3-year warranties, I like feeling supported by this budget-friendly RV and reassured that it’s capable of many adventures out on the open road.

Best For ATVs: Forest River XLR Boost

Forest River is doing a lot of good work on their toy hauler lineup, including the addition of the XLR Boost . This rig is suitable for a range of activities from weekend camping and ski trips to soccer tournaments and water sports. The ability to carry a range of equipment on board means everyone can join in on the fun, even on rainy camping days!

I love getting cozy and relaxing in my RV, but I have a great sense of adventure that I also need to fuel! Bringing an ATV or similar along for RV vacations is sure to create many more memories to last a lifetime. There are a couple of different options; the XLR Boost and the Micro Boost. Both rigs are ready to carry whatever needs to come to the campground, and since there are so many floorplans available, it’s possible to find the perfect rig pretty easily.

The smallest size of XLR Boost features an electric fireplace, optional captain’s chairs, and a walk-around queen bed in the master bedroom which I adore as it means making the bed is easy in the morning! With a dedicated bathroom and bedroom, this compact rig has a true master bedroom suite on board to give my partner and me the privacy we need.

While the unloaded vehicle weight of this rig is just over 6,000 pounds, it’s certainly not a deal breaker when it comes to toy haulers. Plus, the cargo capacity of this 27-foot rig hovers around 5,000 pounds which is a hefty amount if you ask me! I already trust the reliability and functionality of Forest River rigs, and the XLR Boost doesn’t miss the mark at all. I like that so many features are standard with this RV, and the multiple windows help create the light and airy environment I need when living full-time on the road.

Like most RVs on the market today, there are typically always optional extras with new RVs. Additions on the XLR Boost include an off-grid perfect solar package, and heated tank pads which I find super useful for when winter is on the way.  This is a toy hauler able to handle various weather conditions, provide warmth and comfort, and carry an ATV too.

Best For Kayaks: KZ Escape

Every once in a while, a new concept revolutionizes the RV industry. The new Escape “HATCH” by KZ is just that type of notion. The idea is simple: take an affordable ultra-lightweight camper and add a large rear door that opens vertically. I think this is the ultimate blend of a travel trailer and toy hauler from KZ!

Opening the rear hatch immediately provides easily accessible King Kong storage, instant fresh air, tons of natural light, and a second overhead covering under the rear door. So, for the first time, imagine a roughly 20-foot, 3,000-pound camper that actually has the ability to be easily loaded!

One of the big perks for me about RVing is the ability to connect with nature and be at one in the trees or by the ocean. Therefore, I love that in the Escape I can roll down the screen wall, open the back hatch, and be transported to the outside world. I can do all of this whilst also being able to carry kit like bicycles, camping gear, kayaks, and more.

As I love going off-grid and boondocking from time to time I’d opt for KZ’s optional off-grid package and install a 100W roof-mounted solar panel, 1,000W inverter with dedicated 110V outlets, solar controller, portable Bluetooth audio player and flashlight, tongue-mounted bike rack , griddle, and solar on the side. These additions will all make going off-grid far easier and will ensure the toy hauler stays charged up and capable away from the campground.

Built for anything thanks to aluminum wheels with mud tires, extra ground clearance, electronically-controlled heated holding tanks, and a secure double-entry step, I trust the Escape to tackle various terrains and seasons. When it comes time to hit the hay, I can transform the rear dinette into a huge sleeping surface or U-dinette.

This allows additional space for friends and family once all the extra gear is unpacked. There are three fantastic hatch door floor plans to choose from, making this rig an excellent choice for those who need to explore various options. While it isn’t quite a stereotypical toy hauler given its cargo-carrying capacity of fewer than 1,000 pounds, it’s a great small-scale option for those with bulky- but not necessarily heavy- toys.

Best For The Whole Family: Forest River Wolf Pack

While this toy hauler is the least compact on this list, it’s able to fit the entire family and sometimes that’s exactly what we need! There are multiple floor plans with the Forest River Wolf Pack with layouts suitable for kiddos and all the adventure toys I can think of! It’s an innovatively designed and expertly executed toy hauler to transform RVing into an exciting time for the whole family.

The capabilities of the Wolf Pack mean there’s no need to bring a second vehicle along on RVing trips. This cuts time, effort, and fuel, as items like ATVs, kayaks, firewood, and coolers can all fit inside comfortably.  The 315PACK12 has a substantial ramp door/patio space and is ready to house the whole family with a sofa bed and king bed. I like the generous storage in this rig, and the kitchen is also surprisingly spacious, kitted out with a dinette, full bathroom, ample storage, and even a spare tire.

The Cherokee Wolf Pack is a toy hauler able to convert into a bunkhouse in next to no time at all. In fact, approximately half of Wolf Pack customers are bunkhouse buyers looking for more sleeping room and versatility in their unit, according to Forest River! However, t he Wolf Pack isn’t always a toy hauler or a bunkhouse. Instead, it’s whatever it needs to be for each and every trip

With yet another Forest River rig on this list, you must be thinking I’m a bit biased. However, Forest River prove their worth time and time again, and this larger toy hauler is no exception. With fifth-wheel and travel trailer floor plans , the Wolf Pack is a versatile choice for any family.

Best For Couples: Forest River Flagstaff E-Pro

Another Forest River toy hauler!? I would love to diversify, but they make so many unstoppable toy haulers that I couldn’t help mentioning them more than once! I love traveling on the road with my partner. We can bounce ideas off one another, feel more secure, and make life-long memories as we navigate full-time life on the road. That’s why I’ve added the compact and lightweight Flagstaff E-Pro to our list .

There’s only one floorplan option for the E-Pro toy hauler which is a little disappointing, but there are 8 different layout options for the travel trailer model. These RVs aren’t big, and in fact, they’re ideal for those who own a small SUV and are hoping to tow using the car rather than a big truck. There are floorplan weights within the towing capabilities of an abundance of vehicles making this rig suitable for many different RVers.

The E-Pro is now offering more standards and options than anyone in its class. Standard on most models includes an AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth and a USB port, a 12Volt TV with a built-in DVD Player, a rear ladder, a WiFi Ranger booster with available WiFi connectivity, and more. Exterior features include a roof mount solar panel with a 1000 Watt converter, a Shower Miser Water Saver inside, plus many more standard features.

I enjoy the addition of a reliable and weatherproof rear ramp, as it means I’ll have no trouble loading and unloading all of my additional gear. This trailer also weighs 3,500 lbs dry which is a substantial weight for a toy hauler, making it a functional and robust rig. Options include a 13,500 BTU AC, a tongue mount bike rack, an off-road package with a lift kit, and 15” Mud Rover radial tires along with many other great features.

Up to nearly 1,500 lbs worth of cargo can be carried on board this trailer, meaning most adventure kit should be able to fit on board snuggly. I would definitely opt for the off-road package with the E-Pro as there’s nothing like the feeling of waking up with nature and being in the trees first thing in the morning. But I also want to be able to leave spots in the wilderness and this is a big ask for a hefty trailer on a soggy day!

Best Travel Trailer Option: Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro

Another unstoppable travel trailer and toy hauler hybrid, the Rockwood Geo Pro from Forest River is a fan favorite. I see it often as a camp host and full-timer, and for good reason. It has an impressive number of features in a lightweight toy hauler frame! I like that Forest River hasn’t forgotten about aesthetics with the Rockwood Geo Pro, as the interior is modern and fresh, with quality craftsmanship and detailed features.

Astonishingly, there are eight different floorplans for the travel trailer model of this rig and one toy hauler layout. This means there are plenty of options to explore and find the one best suited to individual preferences and needs.  The Rockwood Geo Pro seems similar in build to the Flagstaff E-Pro but with even more exterior storage and features. The ramp door is 60” by 68” and can accommodate many different items, all with weatherproofing and Forest River’s reliable craftsmanship.

When I first began my RVing journey I was a bit apprehensive of towing! I’ve since had lots of practice and it’s safe to say I am a confident tower now! There are, however, some features on the Geo Pro that make towing breezy such as the torsion axle, rubber-ryde suspension, tire pressure monitoring system, backup camera, and power tongue jack .

With interior and exterior Azdel construction, I like the security of knowing there are reliable and long-lasting materials on my side for wherever the road takes you. The smallest floor plan of this particular rig can hold up to 1,500 pounds of cargo as well, perfect for a small amount of toys and a regular towing vehicle.

Solar comes standard, along with heated holding tanks and WiFi prep ideal for boondocking or heading off the grid. The interior isn’t as grand and luxurious as some other RVs on the market, but it has all the essentials including an AC unit, powerful heater, and substantial storage space.

Best Small Option: Forest River No Boundaries

It’s easy to think that the biggest rigs are the best and most capable, but this trailer/hauler hybrid from Forest River is here to prove us all wrong. The No Boundaries rig has a variety of floorplans across their 10, 16, 19, and 20 series so it’s not too tough to find the most suitable layout. Both of the 10 series floorplans weigh under 2,500 lbs so they are the best ones to look at for small and lightweight toy hauler options.

These rigs aren’t the largest on the market, however, they still have essentials on board such as a wrap-around awning, queen bed, Rhino Rack system on the roof, and impressive ground clearance too for ease of towing. I’m not sure this rig is big enough for my partner, dog, and me to live in full-time as it’s a bit on the small side once there are more than three individuals inside. There’s still, however, everything on board for successful RVing trips like a sink, two burner stove, cold weather package, and a durable fiberglass exterior too.

The total length is 13′ 10″ and the width is 88″ so it’s easy to make room to park this on the driveway or in the garage when it’s not in action. This humble trailer is stress-free to maneuver around since it’s so compact, and this means a far easier time out on the road compared to huge, mighty campers!

I would like there to be more off-grid options with this rig such as solar, as nothing beats capturing the sun’s natural energy and using it to power things in our RVs! It also means there are no limitations on a destination, which is ideal as I can’t stand being parked at the campground all the time – I need some adventure and thrill!

Most Luxurious: Jayco Jay Flight Octane

I like RVs to be functional and last a long time, but I want to feel at home in a rig, and I don’t want to shy away from luxury either! That’s why the Jayco Jay Flight Octane is a great catch. It has a traditional hitch and is a travel trailer/toy hauler hybrid packed with an abundance of impressive interior and exterior features. Jayco is a familiar name and one that I trust for designing RVs with travelers in mind, whilst not forgetting about personal touches and home comforts.

This is one good-looking rig, and I love that all the gear I want to bring can come along too thanks to the non-skid ramp door with an outstanding 3,000 lb ramp capacity, high-intensity ramp lights, and a spring-assisted door for ease of access. Its features like these that make the Octane a great addition to any family looking to bring ATVs and bikes along on RV vacations during summer.

Nowadays, I seem to be coming across more and more RVs that have equipment such as solar as a standard option, but unfortunately, this isn’t the case with this Jayco trailer. The Solar power package is an optional extra and only offers a 100W panel and 30-amp controller which likely won’t keep the rig and its components powered for very long.

However, there’s always the option of carrying a generator on board , and with all of the space at the rear of the trailer, there’s room to store it too! Jayco has a 4,000W Onan generator option, and I think it’s worth the investment for improved off-grid capability. I love the overall luxury feel of this rig that’s helped by the easy-clean vinyl flooring throughout, three-burner stovetop, hardwood cabinetry, auto ignition furnace, and a modern bathroom.

There are three floorplan options with the Jayco Flight Octane, each one with a slightly different bedroom and bathroom location. The aluminum rims, structural l-beam frame, Magnum Truss roof system, and wide-body construction prove this is a rig built to last a long time, through all sorts of RVing adventures!

Most Modern: Coachmen RV Catalina Trail Blazer

With five intricate floorplans, the Coachmen RV Catalina Trail Blazer toy hauler deserves a place on our trailer list. With the smallest overall length being 30′, this is by no means the smallest hauler out there, but it’s still humbly sized for traveling around the country and more. The Catalina is a blend of trailer and toy hauler that’s ideal for thrill-seeking RVers wanting to bring adventure gear along on vacations and RV trips.

In the garage, I like that safety and security are a high priority as there are steel-to-steel tie-downs and tongue-and-groove plywood floors for keeping things safe. Along with sizable space for bikes, kayaks, and more, there’s a full kitchen, entertainment center, bedroom, and decent bathroom space so I can live comfortably, no matter where I’m parked. The innovative thinking of Coachmen is shown throughout the Catalina, but especially in the floorplans that can transform the loading ramp into a party deck, or as I would use it – a relaxation deck!

The smallest floorplan is the 26TH, able to sleep multiple individuals, whilst also providing an open-feel living and kitchen space. I’m particularly drawn to the ample storage throughout this hauler, as it means everything can be stored neatly, not just the bikes in the back! There are a few touches to the Catalina Trail Blazer that I believe make all the difference in making the trailer feel more homely.

Firstly, the glass shower door is a welcome elegant touch, the two optional recliners provide a much-needed cozy reading area, and the 15′ awning is ideal for extending the space within the trailer, so the family can gather outside and enjoy quality time whilst remaining shaded from the sun and sheltered from the rain.

The kitchen is something I’m massively impressed by in this Coachmen, as it features a large refrigerator, seamless thermofoil countertops, an under-mount farm-style sink, three burner stove, a range hood, and a sleek microwave. I love having a well-equipped RV kitchen as it means I’m inspired and motivated to cook healthy, vibrant meals for my loved ones.

For off-gridding, there’s an optional Peak Performance Solar Package available, however, there’s universal solar prep, controller connections, and wiring which all come standard and are ready to be hooked up to a solar system. The Cataline certainly boasts a wide range of features and capabilities, making it a fantastic, sleek, and modern option for RVers.

Finding a small and lightweight toy hauler shouldn’t be a chore, and hopefully, after taking a look at our list of rigs, you’re feeling more confident in what you want from your new RV!

There are so many different models of toy haulers out there, but remember to keep an eye out for hybrid trailers too that may suit you and your family a bit better, whilst also being able to carry additional equipment and toys.

Best Lightweight Toy Hauler Travel Trailers

living area in the garage space of a toy hauler

When you’re a camper who loves to travel with equipment and toys to camping spots and parks, it’s important to be able to bring it all with you. A lightweight toy hauler travel trailer is perfect for the job, as it can fit your biggest bits of gear inside, but is still light enough, so it can be easily towed to your next adventure.

Toy Hauler Travel Trailers vs. Regular Travel Trailer

You might be struggling to decide between a toy hauler travel trailer and a regular travel trailer and which one would fit your lifestyle better. They both offer different things so it’s best to do your research on each type before deciding.

A toy hauler travel trailer gives you extra space like a garage to store and travel with your favorite sports equipment or toys. The space is flexible and can be used as an additional living or sleeping space when not being used as a garage, as toy haulers usually include a pull-down bed or fordable dinette feature.

A regular travel trailer will give RVers the option to have more interior space and features such as a bunkhouse, extra beds, larger kitchen or common area.

If you prefer to camp with more people, a regular travel trailer might be a better fit. If you are a camper more interested in hauling along your favorite toys, equipment and gear, a toy hauler might be the best choice.

The Four Best Toy Hauler Travel Trailers

  • Forest River XLR Hyperlite 19HFS
  • Coachmen Catalina Trail Blazer 26TH
  • KZ Sportsmen LE 270THLE
  • Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf 22RR

1. Forest River XLR Hyperlite 19HFS - Starts at $45,459

forest river xlr hyperlite toy hauler travel trailer exterior

Your favorite outdoor toys and gear will be along for the ride on every camping trip with the Forest River XLR Hyperlite 19HFS. This toy hauler travel trailer is 28-feet in length with an unloaded vehicle weight of 5,272 pounds and cargo-carrying capacity of 2,528 pounds. Its features include the extra storage space, the versatility of the garage space and the construction of the RV.

The XLR Hyperlite has a 12-foot garage space that can hold big items such as jet skis, kayaks, four-wheelers and more. There is a spring assist ramp door that comes down easily to roll your gear in and out of the trailer. It can also hold extra little things you might need to pack such as helmets, fishing gear, or portable gas tanks.

The garage space doesn’t have to be used as storage space if that is not currently in use. This is a very versatile space within the garage area. Because the floor and ramp door are insulated, it can be used as a bedroom for extra guests or large families or an indoor dining space. There is an electric bed or pass-thru dinette. The garage area also has TV and cable connections for convenient entertainment hook ups.

The construction of the RV allows for a safe camping trip with easy maintenance and upkeep. It has a fully walkable, singular roof membrane with a 12-year warranty. The freshwater tank holds 54 gallons and the gray and black water tanks each hold 32 gallons. To keep cool on hot summer days, there is a 15,000 BTU ducted AC distribution center.

What is the Best Toy Hauler Travel Trailer?

ultra light travel trailer toy hauler

The two styles of toy hauler campers require different hitch components for safe towing. The best choice for you depends on your tow vehicle and what it’s set up for – or what you’re willing to spend to set it up.

The main advantage of a toy hauler travel trailer over a fifth wheel toy hauler is eliminating the need for installing a fifth wheel hitch in the bed of your truck. Fifth wheel hitches are generally more expensive and require a more lengthy installation process. They also eliminate your ability to use your truck bed for gear storage.

You’ll still need a proper weight distribution hitch for these travel trailer toy haulers, but the installation process is easier, and they’re easier to get familiar with if you’re a first-timer. You also retain the ability to use your truck bed for storage. And with that important point covered, let’s look at some toy haulers!

Our Picks for the Best Toy Hauler Travel Trailer

Forest River Grey Wolf 27RR

fr-grey-wolf-interior-best-toy-hauler-travel-trailer-10-2023

Consistently one of our perennial best-sellers, the Forest River Grey Wolf 27RR is a stick-and-tin toy hauler with a unique queen-sized Murphy bed that helps maximize interior space during the day. In addition to that bed, you’ll have a convertible dinette and two fold-down sofas in the garage as alternate sleeping areas to accommodate up to five overnight guests.

This toy hauler’s 90” x 76” rear ramp door converts to a patio deck once the garage is unloaded, and the garage boasts twin beds that convert to a dinette. It also has its own dedicated entrance to the trailer’s single bathroom, which is a walk-through design with a door into the kitchen opposite the garage.

The Murphy bed turns into a comfortable sofa during the day, but there’s also a privacy screen you can pull across once you convert it to a bed at night, ideal for when you’re hosting guests. It also has an exterior TV mount and an outside kitchen under the 15’ powered awning. There are multiple feature packages available for this model, but some of our favorite features in the Limited package include:

  • Tire pressure monitors
  • Cherokee backup camera system

Forest River XLR Boost 2114B

xlr-boost-garage-best-toy-hauler-travel-trailer-10-2023

With the versatile ramp door patio system and a single slide-out in the main sleeping area, the Forest River XLR Boost 2114B is built for indoor-outdoor comfort. That ramp boasts a 3,000-pound weight capacity when loading and unloading and can still hold up to 1,500 pounds when converted into a patio deck.

The main sleeping area situates the queen bed in the slide-out across from the entry door into the trailer’s single bathroom. This layout accommodates overhead cabinets above the bed, his-and-hers shelves for nightstands, and a huge dresser below the front window. Plus, you can enjoy a private entry into the bathroom, which hosts a 30” x 36” shower/tub.

The garage is where the dining action occurs but it also converts to your extra sleeping areas. The opposing sofas create a comfortable dinette, but when the table is removed, they convert into a second queen-sized bed. Don’t forget about the queen-sized drop-down Euro bed above that, but here are a few other noteworthy features of the 2114B:

  • Docking station located in the outside storage compartment on the off-camp side
  • 30-gallon external fuel cell with pump
  • Renewable energy package with 200-watt roof-mounted solar panel and 30-amp interior monitor

For those who want to maintain privacy in the main sleeping area, the Grand Design Momentum G-Class 21G offers a sizeable garage combined with the kitchen and living areas. The single bathroom has a separate entry to the right of the entrance, allowing easy access for guests or kids without entering the main sleeping area.

The main sleeping area boasts a queen-sized bed, a full bathroom, a residential walk-in shower, and a skylight for extra headroom. The living room features two Euro-style swivel recliners with a flip-up pet dish between them for your furry RV companions. They’re situated across from the kitchen with a three-burner range, an oven, a high-rise kitchen faucet with a sprayer, and a stainless steel microwave.

In the garage, two fold-down sofas sit opposite one another and can be used as beds or to create a dinette with a central table. Another power-lift drop-down bed above offers a third sleeping area, so six people can sleep comfortably. Other features that stood out include:

  • 30-gallon fuel station with interior and exterior gauges
  • Motion sensor lighting over entry steps and in the exterior storage compartments
  • Heated and enclosed underbelly with suspended tanks

Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pack 32PACK13

fr-wolf-pack-garage-best-toy-hauler-travel-trailer-10-2023

For those looking for maximum living space, the Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pack 32PACK13 is the longest floorplan on this list. The garage is spacious, the kitchen and living area feature a slide-out with theater seating, and the main sleeping area has another slide-out for the 67” x 74” Wolf Pack king-sized bed.

Capable of sleeping up to six people, the 2024 floorplan offers a full bathroom off the main sleeping area and a half bath off the garage. That makes it easy for whoever sleeps on the convertible garage dinette or the Happijac power bed above it to use the restroom at night without disturbing the main sleeping area.

With a dresser and a wardrobe in the main sleeping area, a central storage cabinet and overhead cabinets in the kitchen, and the large 13’ x 97.5” garage area, storage is far from lacking in this model. Other features that caught our eye include the 30-gallon fuel station, generator prep, a 21’ powered exterior awning, and the rear ramp door that converts to a patio deck.

Keystone Outback Ultra-Lite 240URS

Most toy hauler floorplans feature the ramp door and cargo area in the rear, but not the Keystone Outback Ultra-Lite 240URS . They flipped the script and put your cargo area in the front, accessible with a side ramp door that measures 56” across and includes an extension for easier loading and unloading.

The full dimensions of the cargo area measure 93.75” across, 83.625” from front to back, and 121.625” from corner to corner. When unloaded, you can easily take advantage of the 34” x 74” flip-down bunk beds and the wardrobe closet in the cargo area.

You’ll find this toy hauler’s 72” x 75” king-sized bed in the rear slide-out, with a step up from the main living area for more comfortable access. This floorplan also boasts a sofa sleeper and a convertible booth dinette, allowing you to comfortably sleep up to seven people without setting up a tent outside. Keystone Carbon 29WFO

The 29WFO is the longer floorplan in Keystone’s new 2024 Raptor Carbon Aluminum travel trailer toy haulers. The placement of the tie-downs in the garage area allows you to keep your motorized toys secured while still utilizing the convertible dinette and/or the drop-down bunks at the rear of the floorplan.

For those with gear or toys that fit in that tie-down area, that’s a major benefit for trips where you need to stop for a night on the way to, or home from, your destination. You won’t have to completely unload the garage in order to dine inside or set up a secondary sleeping area, unlike many other toy hauler floorplans.

The Keystone Carbon 29WFO also boasts a spacious L-shaped kitchen layout, making meal prep easy and efficient. The main sleeping area features a 60” x 74” bed, a privacy door, and a separate entry to the unit’s single bathroom. Some of the other features that stood out include:

Coachmen Catalina Trail Blazer 26TH

trail-blazer-exterior-best-toy-hauler-travel-trailer-10-2023

Coachmen’s new 2024 Catalina Trail Blazer 26TH comes in at that magical 30’ length which means you won’t be as limited on campground selection as you would with a longer toy hauler. It offers some functional standard features and a number of upgrades you should highly consider.

That starts with the rear ramp door, which can handle up to 3,000 pounds when loading and unloading your toys. But you can upgrade that ramp door with a party deck kit to create an ideal outside lounge area once your toys are unloaded. Check out some of our favorite RV deck ideas for inspiration.

Another upgrade worth considering is the set of pushback recliners for the living room, giving you a secondary place to sit beside the fold-down sofas in the garage. You can also opt for a solar package with a 200-watt panel and a 30-amp charge controller. Some additional standard features to note include:

  • A Smart RV Tech monitoring panel that allows remote operation using the LCI OneControl smartphone app
  • Blackout screen wall with zippered walk-through and windows at the rear of the garage
  • Lockable ramp door latches and a 15’ Toy-Loc cable

Forest River Stealth 2530SLE

fr-stealth-best-toy-hauler-travel-trailer-10-2023

By now, you might notice that many of these toy hauler travel trailers feature a similar convertible dinette with opposing fold-down sofas in the garage. You’ll find something a little different in the Forest River Stealth 2530SLE – swivel recliners in place of what would normally be the camp-side fold-down sofa.

From a functional perspective, that opens up a massive amount of floor space in the kitchen. Of course, you’ll sacrifice some sleeping capacity, but with a single flip-down sofa, an electric 54” x 80” bed above that sofa, and a king bed in the main sleeping area, you can still comfortably sleep four to five people.

What you use that extra floor space for is up to you. Maybe it just makes it more comfortable for meal prep. Maybe you can put a mat down to stretch inside before it warms up. Maybe you can set up a temporary table for hosting a holiday gathering in your RV. The beauty is that the choice is yours. But don’t forget these other stand-out features of the Stealth:

  • 40-gallon fuel station
  • 335-watt solar panel
  • Flipped axles with no interior drive on the wheel wells

Highland Ridge Open Range Conventional 25TH

open-range-exterior-best-toy-hauler-travel-trailer-10-2023

The Highland Ridge Open Range Conventional 25TH features a similar floorplan to the Stealth but with one noticeable difference in the living area – a flip-up bar top with stool seating for two people. So you’ll have that, plus the swivel recliners and the flip-down sofa in the garage when everyone wants to relax inside.

That bar top also makes an excellent workstation if you need to pull out your laptop for a few hours while the rest of the family is out playing. And when everyone gets hungry, you’ll have a three-burner range with a glass cover, a 17” oven, and a microwave to heat up meals.

The drop-down bunk bed over the convertible sofa and recliners is the best place for the kids to sleep. You’ll also have separate entries from the main sleeping area and the living room to the trailer’s single bathroom. With an 8’ x 7’3” rear ramp door, you should have plenty of room to load in your motorized toys. Other features that caught our attention include:

  • Marine-grade exterior speakers
  • Enclosed, insulated, and heated underbelly
  • Prep for a backup camera and a solar package

Jayco Jay Flight 265THW

jay-flight-interior-best-toy-hauler-travel-trailer-10-2023

Jayco sees that flip-up bar top and raises it with the Jay Flight 265THW floorplan that includes overhead cabinet storage. That provides a workstation or dining space for two while offering two jackknife sofas with a removable table in the garage’s 5’11” x 7’7” cargo area.

Those sofas are larger than you’d find on many comparable models, mainly because you won’t find a drop-down bunk in this toy hauler garage. You will, however, find a 60” x 75” queen bed in the main sleeping area with its own private entrance into the trailer’s single central bathroom.

There’s an entertainment center mounted in front of the kitchen for enjoying your shows from the sofas or the bar top seating. The kitchen also includes a three-burner recessed cooktop with an oven, a microwave, and seamless countertops. Our other favorite features include:

  • 200-watt solar panel with a 30-amp digital charge controller
  • Pre-wiring for an inverter
  • Exterior TV mount and bracket

Forest River No Boundaries 10.6

It doesn’t get much more petite in the world of toy hauler travel trailers than the Forest River No Boundaries 10.6 . Affectionately known as the “NoBo,” it earns its name with a superior off-roading ability compared to many of the larger models listed above. Plus, you still have excellent sleeping capacity when equipped with a rooftop tent.

Capable of hauling two dirt bikes or a single four-wheeler, this miniature toy hauler features an outdoor kitchen with a two-burner cooktop and a combination 12-volt/110-volt refrigerator. When unloaded, the cushions seamlessly convert the interior to a 60” x 82 queen bed, allowing you to sleep guests or use that instead of equipping it with a rooftop tent.

Many models, however, boast a rooftop tent, kayak racks, and a manual awning. The best upgraded models feature a 270-degree awning for shade on the camp side and rear of the trailer. With the most ground clearance in its class, the NoBo 10.6 is made for off-grid exploration. Our favorite additional features include:

  • Aluminum wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires
  • JBL portable Bluetooth speaker
  • TST tire pressure monitoring system

The Coachmen Freedom Express Select 17BLSE still gives you plenty of garage space for your motorized toys or recreation gear.

That rollover sofa is the secondary sleeping space at night and the lounge seat by day. It even turns into your dining area with this trailer’s removable freestanding table. The main sleeping area boasts a 54” x 80” bed with overhead shelving and a storage cabinet on the camp side.

Introduction

If you spend any amount of time at RV shows or on camping websites, you’ve likely heard the term “toy hauler” thrown around quite a bit. However, the models that receive that label can come in a staggering array of shapes, sizes, and prices. Because of this disparity, it is easy to be left confused as to what exactly constitutes a toy hauler. Or what you should be looking for when shopping for one. Here are some helpful considerations to keep in mind when looking at an ultra lightweight toy hauler. Then, we will look at a few of the best models to start your search.

Ultra Lightweight Toy Hauler

What is a Toy Hauler?

A toy hauler was a travel trailer or fifth wheel that incorporated a garage-like storage space in the rear of the unit. This area was accessed via a large fold-down ramp door, and used for transporting motorcycles or ATVs. These units were quite heavy, and often expensive. However, the world of toy haulers has expanded exponentially in the past decade. Now, there is a new range of ultra-light toy haulers that are not only more affordable but much easier to tow.

What to Consider Before Buying a Toy Hauler

The myriad of choices currently available in toy haulers broadens your options. However, it can also make shopping for them an overwhelming proposition. Thus, it is crucial to create a system to narrow down your options to make sure that you end up with a unit that best suits your needs. Whether you plan to browse the market digitally or hit up a local dealer, here are some of the most important factors to consider.

Like with any other purchase, price is a significant factor. When toy haulers were first introduced to the market, they occupied a lofty place in the market. It was not uncommon for even a basic toy hauler to cost over $80,000. Luckily, the price range has expanded downward quite a bit. For a basic model with modest specs, a toy hauler can be found for as little as $15,000. Of course, the price will vary depending on the specific model you choose.

Another key decision to make is what size toy hauler you are interested in. There are generally three factors that lead to this decision:

  • What you need to haul
  • What you feel comfortable towing
  • Where you can store it

Size is an area where I often caution first-time RV buyers. As you should be aware of, trailer dimensions are a key part of choosing the right hauler.

When shopping across various models, it is easy to feel inclined to buy the largest RV possible. But while size has its advantages, there are also drawbacks. Purchasing a larger toy hauler can make the prospect of towing it more intimidating. Many state and national parks have limits on how large of an RV they can accommodate. Finally, your tow vehicle may not have the capacity to haul a larger unit. In short, it is often wise to purchase the smallest toy hauler that fits your needs. The easier it is to use, the more likely you are to enjoy it.

Toy Hauler Garage Example

In addition to the physical size of a toy hauler, weight is an important consideration. Most half-ton trucks will have a towing capacity of around 8,000 lbs (learn more about Half Ton Towable 5th Wheel Trailers ). Thus, if you intend to keep your current tow vehicle, the weight of the trailer is an important consideration. This is why the new trend of ultralight toy haulers is such a welcome addition to the RV lineup. A typical ultra-light toy hauler will weigh between 3,000 and 5,000 lbs. This allows a mid-size truck or SUV to tow it, even with a bevy of gear and toys loaded up. When shopping, be aware that most manufacturers will quote the empty trailer weight in their specifications. This weight, often called the “unladen vehicle weight” or UVW, is the weight of the trailer without any gear, water, or items on board. Thus, always add at least 1,500 lbs to this number to account for a more realistic towing weight.

Carrying Capacity

Of course, the primary motivation for purchasing a toy hauler is the ability to haul toys. It is very important to examine the carrying capacity of any toy hauler. Many toy haulers, especially those in an “ultralight” category, have low weight ratings. If you intend to only haul one or two 250 lb dirt bikes, this likely will not be a concern. But if your lineup includes heavier touring bikes, or large ATV’s, make sure that the toy hauler has the carrying capacity you need.

Beyond mere numbers, the weight in a toy hauler is generally placed at the very back of the trailer. If overloaded, this can create a dangerously unstable situation. Luckily, in all but the most extreme situations, the average toy hauler will have more than enough capacity for your needs. Make sure to consult with a dealer or other knowledgeable party.

Toy Hauler Garage in Use

Floor Plans

Floor plans are one of the most exciting aspects of toy haulers. Because of the open rear layout, the interior of a toy hauler can grant a huge amount of flexibility. Generally, there are two styles of toy hauler floor plan: those with a separate garage area, and those that are one room. Many shoppers default to looking at the “separated” models, but this an area where more thought may convince you otherwise.

Generally, the toys you are hauling will only be inside the camper while you are going down the road. Otherwise, they will likely be stored outside. Thus, having the open space at your disposal, rather than separated in a dark “garage”, can be a real advantage in a smaller trailer. Further, integrated units often have more hauling space, as the toys you are transporting can be moved further into the trailer.

Another unique feature of toy haulers is the prevalence of lofts and drop-down beds. Many models will have queen-sized beds which electrically drop down from the storage area. This allows you to have the best of both worlds, with both a comfortable sleeping area and a large garage space. In the world of toy haulers, flexibility is king. Look for a layout that places the permanent fixtures, like kitchens and bathrooms, towards the front of the layout. This design will maximize your open space and carrying ability.

Toy Hauler Loft

Should you Buy Used or Buy New?

The decision to buy new or used will depend upon your desires, demands, and budget. There are many goods deals to be had on the used market. However, toy haulers are often used more roughly than their closed-back counterparts. Thus, looking at toy haulers on the used market, prepare to encounter a fair amount of scuffs and wear.

Beyond this, the cost difference between new and used is often not as significant as it seems. When shopping for new units, there are more incentives, rebates, and financing options. When comparing new and used units, make sure you look past the sticker to analyze the true costs. A new unit may be more attainable than you think.

We’ve looked over some of the considerations you should have while shopping for an ultralight toy hauler. Now, let’s look at some of the hottest options on the market.

Five Ultra Lightweight Toy Haulers

Forest River No Boundaries NB10.6 Exterior

The Forest River No Boundaries NB10.6 is one of the most unique ultralight toy haulers to hit the market in recent years. This model straddles the line between a teardrop and a toy hauler by offering a fold-down ramp door, but being a mere eleven feet long. If you are searching for the height of luxury, this is probably not your best option. But, for those who prefer to spend their recreational time outside enjoying nature, this Forest River provides a dry and climate-controlled place for two people. It’s got plenty of room to sleep and the ample storage to haul your bikes, kayaks, or small ATV.

The kitchen is another innovation in this unique. In a traditional teardrop, the kitchen is at the rear of the unit, accessed from the outside. Because of the ramp, Forest River had to move the kitchen to the front. Access is achieved by a sliding drawer mechanism, and the kitchen slides out of the side of the coach. It’s an approach I’ve never seen, but it is hard to argue with the efficiency.

The mission of efficiency continues with the price and weight. At around $15,000 and weighing a mere 1,700 lbs, this may be the easiest to live with toy hauler around.

Livin'Lite Quicksilver VRV XTR Exterior

The Livin’Lite Quicksilver VRV is a refreshing offering to the ultralight toy hauler market. One glance at one of these units and you will realize that Livin’Lite set out to create an RV that was a hauler first and an RV second. The Quicksilver is based upon an aluminum racing trailer platform. This has advantages. The first advantage is aesthetics. This is a tough and rugged looking trailer. The aluminum construction makes the Quicksilver light, strong, and resistant to rotting or leaks. For its strength, the 20-foot-long Quicksilver weighs a svelte 3,700 lbs, making it easily towable by half-ton trucks.

The interior layouts are a very unique approach to toy haulers. There is almost no permanent furniture in the Quicksilver, not even a bed. Instead, this trailer uses fold-down beds that extend out of the side of the unit, similar to a pop-up. These extensions allow the Quicksilver to sleep up to six adults comfortably. The interior is rugged, with an emphasis put on tough-wearing hose-down materials. It is not the coziest space, but it is hard to argue with the versatility.

However, this quality comes at a cost. Due to the aluminum construction, the Quicksilver costs in the upper 20’s low 30’s, depending on options. Yet, the quality leaves no question that this is a trailer that will last for decades to come.

You also get a dual axle, so towing will be more stable and safer compared to single-axle counterparts. As you may know, we love small dual axle travel trailers 🙂

Jayco Octane Super Lite 161 Exterior

For decades, Jayco has been a leader in quality travel trailers, and the Super Lite 161 is no exception. The packaging of the 161 is an exercise in efficiency, as almost the entire trailer is usable for hauling your toys. Rather than have space taken up by a permanent bed, Jayco instead opted for an electrically-actuated queen bed. It drops from the ceiling into the garage space. This is augmented by a convertible sofa, allowing for a total of four comfortable campers.

While the quality of the Jayco is undeniable, the price and weight both reflect the Jayco name. At over 4,500 lbs, this is one of the heavier options in the ultralight category. Further, the $26,000+ price is fairly substantial. But for anyone looking for a high-quality toy hauler with superb packaging, the Jayco Octane Super Lite 161 is worth a look.

Sportsmen Classic 180TH Exterior

For anyone looking to maximize cargo space while minimizing price, the Sportsmen Classic 180TH is a great option. The primary cargo box is a generous nine feet long, allowing even the biggest ATV’s to fit comfortably. However, Sportsmen left enough room between the kitchen and bath area to accommodate a small dirt bike or bicycles. Thus, this unit punches well above its class in terms of capacity.

The 180TH also excels in regards to sleeping capacity. Flanking the front of the unit are a set of double-width bunk beds, allowing four adults to sleep with plenty of room. Further, the cargo area/living room has a fold-down sofa, allowing for six total sleeping areas. At 3,250 lbs, the 180TH still manages to have a light UVW despite its 1,750 lb carrying capacity. For only $17,500, this is a fantastic option for those looking for a small unit with enough space for a family and their toys.

KZ Escape E180TH Exterior

KZ is owned by the same parent company as Sportsmen. Thus, the KZ Escape E180TH is the staple-mate to the above-mentioned Classic 180TH. The Escape shares the same layout and features, however, KZ is the more upmarket division of the brand. Therefore, the price is slightly higher (roughly $2,000 so) for an equivalent KZ. The interior finishes and decorative touches are superior. Cross shopping between them is worthwhile.

In my experience, the added luxury is worth the small additional expense.

It’s got a bunkhouse too !

Five Lightweight 5th Wheel Toy Haulers

Now for those of you who have a 5th wheel hitch but still are looking for an ultra light toy hauler for 5th wheels, check out these 5 trailers.

Forest River XLR Boost 28RZR16 Exterior

Some fifth wheels are unique for their extensive list of features, while others manage to stand out by what they choose not to include. The XLR Boost 28RZR16 is a very interesting floorplan because it only has one small slide in the upper bedroom. While not having a living room slide may seem like an oversight, it, in fact, increases the functionality of this model significantly. In a small fifth wheel, slide-outs can severely hamper the garage space of the unit. Forest River has managed to incorporate a staggering sixteen feet of garage space into a unit only twenty-eight feet long. They did not skimp on sleeping space either. Between the fold-down bed, sofa, and king-sized master bedroom, this unit can comfortably sleep six adults.

Fifth wheels are generally heavier than their travel trailer equivalents, and this is not an exception. At around 8,000 lbs, this model may be towards the top of a half-ton truck’s capacity. However, this $37,000 model is still one of the lightest fifth wheel toy hauler options on the market.

Heartland Cyclone 3600 Exterior

For anyone looking for a toy hauler with a sealed-off garage, the Cyclone 3600 is one of the most compact options on the market. Despite its shorter length, the 3600 does a lot with the space it has. In addition to a twelve-foot garage area, the 3600 incorporates a unique L-shaped kitchen and living room area. This makes the space feel much larger than it is. One of the most impressive aspects of this model is the sleeping capacity. Between the lofts, garage-bed, sofa, and master bedroom, this 15,000 lb (dry weight) multi-tasker can sleep ten people comfortably. At around $60,000+, it is not the least expensive option on the market, but it may be the most versatile.

Evergreen RV Tesla T3950 Exterior

Compared to the Heartland, the Evergreen Tesla T3950 is a more traditional layout and packs an impressive amount of luxury into its 39 ft length. The Heartland name is known for luxury touches. These models feature such niceties as fireplaces, wine coolers, and dishwashers. With a twelve-foot garage, this model can haul a large array of gear while still having space for ten people to sleep. However, as light toy haulers go, the T3950 is somewhat loaded down by its luxury touches, weighing in at around 15,000 lbs (dry). However, they constitute a fantastic value at a typical price of around $60,000.

4. Keystone Carbon Toy Hauler 347

Carbon Toy Hauler 347 Exterior

The Carbon 347 does an admirable job walking the line of being a luxury toy hauler while still maintaining a reasonable size and weight. At around 35 ft long and 12,000 lbs, this is a maneuverable unit. And yet, it still manages to incorporate a thirteen-foot garage and sleeping space for eight. Further, at around $55,000, the 347 is an impressive value given its high-quality construction. Anyone searching for a compact yet luxurious 5th wheel toy hauler should strongly consider the Carbon.

5. Jayco Seismic 4250

Jayco Seismic 4250 Exterior

With a small nine-foot garage, the Jayco Seismic 4250 is far from the highest capacity toy hauler available. But for anyone looking for the utmost in luxury floorplans, it is hard to beat the 4250. The master suite is the clear highlight of this model. It features a stunning front-positioned master bathroom with dual sink vanity and a staggering amount of space. For guests, this model also features a half-bath, as well as sleeping for up to ten people. At 16,000+ lbs, you most likely want a ¾ ton truck to haul this $75,000 beauty. However, for anyone looking to full-time in a toy hauler, this is a wonderful option.
