There are 4 cruise docks at Puerto Vallarta. All of them are located at the Northern part of town approximately 5,5 km or 3,5 mile from the old city center of Puerto Vallarta. Cruise dock 1 (see map above) is the main cruise dock where you will find the cruise terminal and lots of other facilities. There is a tourist information point, ATM, wi-fi hotspot, taxi stand and souvenir market right at the dock. When more ships are in town cruise dock 2, 3 and 4 might also be taken in use. Keep in mind there are less facilities at these docks, although it is a small walk over to cruise dock 1.

Shuttle services

Depending on the cruise line you are travelling with there might be shuttle service offered. Check with your cruise line if this will be offered during your cruise or not.

The white taxis waiting at the cruise port are authorised by the federal Government. Taxi rates are posted in port. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Cruise Port Guide

Even when your stop at Puerto Vallarta cruise port is short, this authentic Mexican city on the coast has plenty to offer near the cruise port. So, don’t let lack of preparation get in the way of seeing the town and the beach on your adventure here. Here are things you can do to make the most of your time at Puerto Vallarta cruise port.

Port Overview

puerto vallarta cruise port

Puerto Vallarta offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re the foodie, the history buff, the armchair ethnographer, or another type of traveler, there’s something for you here.

The bay’s best sightseeing is on El Macelon, where you can gaze at the beauty of Banderas bay, sculptures, and traditional craft wares and hear Mariachi music float out to you from the streets and restaurants.

After a walk down El Macelon, you can easily take a winding adventure through the streets of downtown and see the stunning Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This masterwork attracts visitors all year.

Afterward, appreciate the view overlooking all of Puerto Vallarta’s gorgeous Banderas bay. When you’ve finished taking in the sights, stop into one of the restaurants or taco stands as you admire the old city and its authentic markets.

If this does not tickle your fancy, do not worry. There is plenty of shopping, beach time, golf, and water sports, all found here.

Shopping & Food

People walk along the beach at sunset at a beach town with green mountain to the top right

Puerto Vallarta cruise port puts you near some of the best shopping in Mexico. With options like the Municipal Market Downtown and the Art and Market Marina, you can find genuine crafts and souvenirs that you will find nowhere else.

For those looking for other attractions and great restaurants, you can also opt for the Gallerias Vallarta, just near the cruise terminal, or the Plaza Caracol . For the undisputed best food in the city, head to Los Muertos for delights such as La Palapa, the Blue Shrimp, and other local favorites which feature live Mariachi music.

Nearby Beaches To Check Out

people on a beach during daytime with white apartments in the background

Your typical beautiful beaches of the Mexican Pacific coast, with blue water and alabaster sand, will require transport from the Puerto Vallarta cruise terminal. However, access to these pristine beaches will take no longer than ten minutes to reach.

Los Muertos beach is the most popular in Puerto Vallarta because of its family-friendliness and glut of seaside shops, bars, and restaurants.

Playa de Oro is another popular option because of its generous parasailing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding offerings. However, for those looking for a quieter, more peaceful beach, Conchas Chinas is a better option where one can see marine life at play in tide pools.

Other Things To Do

Puerto Vallarta offers a further wealth of activities, such as tequila tasting, golfing, walking, driving, or boat tours (and many other water activities). As a city on the Jalisco coast, the tequila in Puerto Vallarta’s artisan tequila bars comes straight from the source in the Jalisco highlands, allowing you to try several varieties recommended by tequila experts.

Puerto Vallarta’s tours also offer several options for a single day’s or night’s visit. Historical heritage tours will inform you of the city’s turbulent but fascinating history. Others will transport you outside the town for snorkeling in crystal clear lagoons or for UTV off-road tours to show you the natural beauty surrounding the city.

Puerto Vallarta’s world-class golf course may be more suitable for those seeking more relaxed activity. Buy a golf pass, and you can spend the day enjoying links designed by several former golf greats.

Mexico uses the Mexican peso. After conversion, a single dollar (USD) typically translates to an amount near 20 Mexican pesos (MXN). Use a currency conversion tool to check the current exchange rate at any time .

Many travelers report their purchasing power post-conversion is surprisingly high here despite Puerto Vallarta’s growing tourism sector, which is great news for cruise travelers. Many vendors near the Cruise port will accept USD but give you your change in pesos, which is a handy way to acquire initial cash.

However, we do not recommend this because the vendors will ultimately charge more if you pay in USD. Instead, we recommend walking to the shopping center near the port and taking out cash from an ATM at a bank, as you won’t be charged a commission, and you can get your hands on cash for your entire stay in Puerto Vallarta.

How To Get to Puerto Vallarta From the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

Any bus driving south except “Tunel” will bring you to the city center in a matter of minutes and for a mere 10 pesos. Just take one of the yellow taxis outside the port for an even faster connection.

You’ll have to negotiate your fare, but the trip to the center should cost no more than $7. To get back from the city center, you can take the bus labeled “Walmart” or “Marina” or take a yellow taxi. You can also try an Uber, which is often cheaper than a taxi. However, they may not be able to pick you up directly from the port.

Located on the Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta is a jewel with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. It is also one of the safest tourist destinations in Mexico and a favorite beach town for millions of visitors each year.

When you get off the ship in Puerto Vallarta, you will find free WiFi in the cruise terminal, as well as ATMs, cafes, taxis, and tour guides. Nearby you will also find stores like Walmart, Sam’s club, and local pharmacies.

If you want to catch a bus instead of a taxi or Uber, go over to the bus stop in front of Sam’s club and get on a bus that will take you to the city center. This is an inexpensive and safe way to get around Puerto Vallarta.

The state of Jalisco is famous for its tequila, so don’t be surprised to see tequila sold as a souvenir in many stores. Tequila is a great gift to bring back home to family and friends!

The currency is the Mexican peso, but the dollar is widely accepted. However, it is better to exchange dollars for pesos or withdraw cash at the ATM for the most favorable exchange rate.

(And for an unforgettable cruise experience, there are also plenty of  amazing Puerto Vallarta tours and shore excursions  you can splurge on!)

And, if you love spending your port day on the beach, you’re in luck!  Some of the  best beaches on the Pacific Coast  are in Puerto Vallarta.  (Sunsets from a Puerto Vallarta beach are absolutely stunning!)

Puerto Vallarta is chock-full of great public art, especially along the Malecón.  Admire Puerto Vallarta’s  colorful architecture  and its unique mosaic benches.

Join me on an  easy walking tour of Puerto Vallarta . Lace up your shoes and let’s go!

Best Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

When I visit a cruise port, sometimes it’s more relaxing to just explore the city on your own. If that’s what you’re in the mood for, then the Puerto Vallarta cruise port is the perfect place for you!

Some cruise lines will offer an inexpensive shuttle from the cruise port to downtown Puerto Vallarta, or you can take a quick taxi ride — or even ride the bus.

Here’s what I did and saw on my  Puerto Vallarta walking tour :

1.  Malecón Puerto Vallarta

Taking a stroll along the Malecón is a great way to kick off your visit to Puerto Vallarta, and the best place to begin your walking tour.

The Malecón is a  paved oceanfront promenade  with plenty of cafés, shops, and galleries vying for your attention.  The Malecón spans 12 blocks (about a kilometer) and stretches from the  Centro to the Zona Romántica.

You’ll find many interesting sculptures decorating the Malecón.  It’s like an  outdoor art museum  with fantastic views of the ocean!  And if your cruise is leaving later in the evening, you can enjoy one of Puerto Vallarta’s famous sunsets from the Malecón.

The Malecón itself has some interesting designs in it – be sure to look down to see this artwork right beneath your nose.

2. ‘In Search of Reason’ sculpture

One of the most  interesting sculptures  along the Malecón is called ‘In Search of Reason’ (En Busca de la Razón).  It’s more commonly called the ‘Ladder Sculpture’, for obvious reasons.

This piece of art, created by sculptor Sergio Bustamante, stretches 30 feet upwards into the sky.

It features two robed figures climbing the ladder, each with an arm outstretched in either a wave or a beseeching gesture towards the sky.  A third robed figure stands facing the ladder with both arms outstretched.

It’s really hard to get a photo of this sculpture without other tourists in it, since people love to pose on the ladder for their souvenir photo from Puerto Vallarta.

And apparently the sculptor actually wanted this kind of interaction with his art – so it’s all good.

3. Sand Sculptures

You’ll find some extremely  intricate sand sculptures  located along the Malecón in Puerto Vallarta.  Since they’re made of sand, they don’t last forever.  But these ‘esculturas de arena’ must contain a little bit of magic to make them hold up as long as they do.

On my April visit, I ran across this interesting sand sculpture, styled with ancient influences.  It’s incredible how the artist makes it look like the figure is wrapped in leaves, adorned with jewelry and a mask.

If you are visiting Puerto Vallarta around the holidays, you may see sand sculptures with a religious aspect such as ‘The Virgin of Guadalupe’ or ‘Three Kings’.   If you get lucky, you might even get to see a sand sculpture artist at work!

4. Triton and Siren

This classically styled bronze sculpture reminds me of a museum piece from Greek or Roman mythology.

And for good reason – the male figure represents Triton, one of the Greek gods of the sea.  The female figure is a Siren.  You remember them – beautiful women known for their enchanting and irresistible songs which drove sailors to their doom.

‘ Triton and Siren ’ is the creation of Mexican artist Carlos Eugenio Espino del Castillo Barrón and dates from 1990.

Local officials incorrectly labeled this statue ‘Neptune and the Nereid’ during its unveiling, so you may see various statue names when you look for this one on Google Maps.

The ocean makes such an appropriate backdrop to this sculpture, and the view would be even more dramatic at sunset.

5. Letras Puerto Vallarta (Puerto Vallarta sign)

Letras Puerto Vallarta is the ever-popular  ‘Puerto Vallarta’ sign  spelled out in giant letters.  It’s a newcomer to the Malecón, as it was just added in 2018.

The giant letters are decorated with colorful and whimsical pictures representing Puerto Vallarta.  These include attractions such as the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and activities such as fishing and sailing.  Be sure to take a peek at the back side of the sign, as it’s even more colorful than the front.

The Puerto Vallarta sign makes for an  iconic photo opportunity , so you’ll have to be patient to wait for the area to clear out between tour groups in order to get your own photo.  Or be really good with Photoshop.

The Letras Puerto Vallarta centers on a statue, ‘ The Boy on the Seahorse ’ (Monumento El Caballito).  This sculpture is the work of artist Rafael Zamarripa Castañeda.

This statue was the first to be placed on Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón, and it is considered to be one of the symbols of the city.

The version you see here is a replica of the original, which is located on Los Muertos Beach.  The original had some unfortunate history with being lost to the sea during storms, and subsequently recovered.

So now the city has a matching pair of statues to enjoy!

6. The Arches (Los Arcos)

As you continue your walking tour south along the Malecón, you will come to one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic attractions.  The Arches, or Los Arcos, are a set of four connected stone arches overlooking the waters of beautiful Banderas Bay.

The Arches are the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón , and serve as a backdrop for the Aquiles Serdan Theater. You’ll usually be able to find some sort of live entertainment in this open-air amphitheater.

Enjoy musical performances,  traditional Mexican dancers , or local festivals.  Some of the entertainment caters to tourists (such as demonstrations of ancient dances complete with costumes), but other entertainment is for the enjoyment of locals and tourists alike.

The arches themselves were originally part of a hacienda near Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico but are now an integral part of the Puerto Vallarta landscape.  They have become nearly as recognizable as the Seahorse statue and the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

7. The Friendship Fountain

Keep following the Malecón past the arches, and you can’t miss the Friendship Fountain.   This fountain features three intertwined playful dolphins, so it is sometimes called the  Dancing Dolphins Fountain.

The Friendship Fountain’s existence is due to Puerto Vallarta becoming a sister city with Santa Barbara, California in 1973.

The whimsical fountain you see here took inspiration from the design of the Santa Barbara Bicentennial Friendship Fountain.  The California version features the graceful forms of a family of three dolphins all leaping in the same direction.

Puerto Vallarta’s Friendship Fountain was created in 1987 by artists James “Bud” Bottoms and Octavio González Gutiérrez.

As the story goes, the elements of the fountain arrived separately, and González had to choose how to arrange them.  So, he placed the dolpins in this arrangement, which gives Puerto Vallarta’s fountain a lively and playful vibe.

8. Naval History Museum

If you’re in the mood to visit a museum during your  walking tour of Puerto Vallarta , the Naval History Museum is a good choice.  Its location couldn’t be more convenient since it is right next to the arches and the Friendship Fountain.

The Naval History Museum is housed in a colonial-style building.  Inside you’ll find lots of exhibits detailing  Mexico’s naval history ,  elaborate model ships  (Chris loves those), navigational instruments, and maps.  The majority of the exhibits are in both English and Spanish.

It’s a small museum, so you can easily fit a stop into your schedule.  Admission is fairly inexpensive –only a couple of dollars.  There’s also a coffee shop, and you don’t need to buy a museum ticket to visit the coffee shop.

It’s easy to walk right past the Naval History Museum if, like me, you get drawn in by every sculpture you see along the esplanade.  If you get to this colorful oceanfront tile art work ‘Vendedores de Pescado’, turn around!

9. Vallarta Dancers

The  vibrantly colored statue , Vallarta Dancers (Escultura charro Bailarines de Vallarta) will be our last stop of this side of the Malecón before we head inland on our walking tour.

I love the graceful movement captured in the female dancer’s swirling skirts and billowing scarf.  The gold scrollwork decorating the male dancer’s clothing and hat is also lovely.

This life-sized bronze statue looks like a moment frozen in time, and you almost expect to blink and have the dancers continue on with the steps of the dance.

The sculpture was created in 2006 by artist Jim Demetro and has become one of the most photographed sculptures in Puerto Vallarta.  It is based on the ‘Jarabe Tapatío’, aka the Mexican Hat Dance.

10. Plaza de Armas

Now we backtrack a wee bit to return to The Arches, and then head inland towards the southeast to reach the Plaza de Armas.

Note the roads in Puerto Vallarta are roughly in a grid system, but the roads are built parallel and perpendicular to the shoreline.  So, here in the Centro area, things run at about a 45-degree angle from the cardinal compass points.

And when we head south to the Zona Romántica, the roads realign with the direction of that shoreline and shift around again.

Plaza de Armas is  Puerto Vallarta’s central plaza , and it is right next to Puerto Vallarta’s City Hall and the Tourism Office.   You’ll see the statue of Ignacio L. Vallarta with pride of place as you approach the plaza.

You guessed it, Puerto Vallarta was named in honor of  Ignacio Vallarta , who was one of the state governors.  Before that, it was called Las Peñas.  I think the name ‘Puerto Vallarta’ has a nicer ring to it, don’t you?

Plaza de Armas is a lovely plaza where you can take a moment to rest on the  elegant scrollwork benches  or in the shady gazebo.  And from here, you can get an excellent view of the crown atop the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which we’ll be visiting next!

11. Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, or  Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe , is the second main  symbol of Puerto Vallarta  (along with the Seahorse).  ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’ is another name for the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Mexico.

If you’re visiting in the first part of December, be sure to check out the  Festival of Our Lady of Guadalupe , which runs from December 1-12.

The main belltower,  topped with an elaborate crown , makes this church unique.  The church was built between 1930 and 1940 in a neoclassical style.  The crown has had many incarnations over the decades, with impact from weather and earthquakes, with the current version created in 2009.

As you approach the church from the plaza, you’ll see the tall tower with its glorious crown as well as the two smaller towers. It’s one of the top Puerto Vallarta historic sites!

Feel free to enter the church to view the interior.  Be respectful and quiet inside the church, and don’t disturb worshipers during mass.

Be sure to look upwards into the interior of the dome to see the ornate golden decorations, cherubs, and stained glass.

12. Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale

If you’d like to purchase some authentic Mexican crafts during your visit to Puerto Vallarta, you’ll want to browse through the  Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale .  This market is located on the northern bank of the Rio Cuale.

Here you’ll find vendors with a dizzying array of products.  Take home some vibrant  beaded Huichol art , textiles, mosaics, or colorful ceramics.  Be sure to look around the market to see your options and be prepared to bargain!

If you’re hungry, there are lots of food options in the mercado, from fresh produce to prepared foods.  Head upstairs and check out the restaurants to sample typical Mexican cuisine.

If you want to do even more shopping, visit the  Cuale Island Flea Market  – just cross the bridge over Rio Cuale to the island, and you can’t miss it.

13. Gringo Gulch

As you head east from the Mercado, you’ll hit Gringo Gulch.   Gringo Gulch  is a residential area on the hillside along Rio Cuale.  It got its name from the famous foreigners (gringos) who lived in this area in the 1950s and 1960s.

Some of the most famous residents to live in Gringo Gulch were  Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton .  Their love affair in Puerto Vallarta is actually one of the things that really made a name for this city.

During Burton’s filming of ‘Night of the Iguana’ in Puerto Vallarta, Elizabeth Taylor moved here to be with him – even though he was married to someone else at the time!

They stayed in director John Huston’s ‘Casa Kimberley’, which Burton later purchased for Taylor.  He purchased a second house across the street for himself and had a bridge built between them (Lover’s Arch).

Since it’s on a hillside, be prepared for some steep inclines and stair-climbing in this part of the walking tour.

14. Zona Romántica

Puerto Vallarta’s Zona Romántica is a large region, roughly bordered by Rio Cuale to the north, highway 200 to the east, and the coast on the west.  It tapers to a point just past Playa Los Muertos.

Zona Romántica is a trendy area known for its restaurants, bars, galleries, boutiques, hotels and entertainment .  There is a robust LGTBQ community in Puerto Vallarta, and you’ll find rainbow-colored everything in the Zona Romántica.  And a surprising number of advertisements for drag shows!

Spend some time just exploring the Zona Romántica.   Admire the architecture of the colonial buildings and churches, enjoy a cup of coffee at a cute café, and do a little people-watching.

I love this sidewalk art that I ran across on my last visit to Puerto Vallarta – yet another of the city’s iconic seahorses!  In my opinion, it was much too pretty to walk on.

15. Iglesia de la Santa Cruz

The Iglesia de la Santa Cruz is a charming Catholic church painted in candy-colored pastels.   You can’t miss the belltower reaching up into the sky like a fancy wedding cake trimmed in yellow, pink, and white flanking pink stone arches.

This church is just a small unassuming local church but has its own beauty.  The interior is bright and airy, as the crisp white walls and ceiling are illuminated with sunlight from the high stained-glass windows.

16. Parque Lázaro Cárdenas

I’d be lying if I said that the Parque Lázaro Cárdenas wasn’t the highlight of my walking tour of the Puerto Vallarta cruise port.  I love this fantastic  mosaic-filled park !

When we visited Puerto Vallarta in April of 2019, there were a lot of really cool intricate mosaics decorating the columns and benches in Parque Lázaro Cárdenas.

When I returned in April of 2022, I was astounded at how many more mosaic benches had been completed.  In fact, almost all of the benches had been ‘adopted’ by local families or business to decorate.

I even saw some of the artists at work on their mosaic masterpieces.  I’m sure by the next time I visit Puerto Vallarta, the entire park will be completed.

Vibrant mosaic benches

Some of the mosaics are free form with a palette of colors but with no real pattern.

Personally, I prefer the ones with intricate designs and scenes.  This one has a ‘Día de Muertos’ ( Day of the Dead ) flair, with skeletal bride and groom flanking the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I also love how the designs carry down through the bottom of the bench to make ‘legs’ for the figures.

I ran (okay, walked) from one bench to another like a kid in a candy store, ooh-ing and aah-ing over the gorgeous designs and vibrant colors.  And, of course, taking lots of pictures!

It’s certainly a tough decision, but I’d have to say that my absolute favorite bench design is this cutie, for both the design and the sentiment: ‘True love is you, love’.

17. Olas Altas Saturday Market

The  Olas Altas Farmers Market  sets up shop in Parque Lázaro Cárdenas on Saturdays.  This is a two-fer in that you can enjoy the gorgeous mosaics of the park, and also shop for some souvenirs or enjoy some local products.

You’ll find everything from jewelry to woven baskets to ceramics, and aguas frescas to sandwiches to artisan chocolates.

If you want to visit a farmer’s market but you’re not in town on a Saturday, visit the Emiliano Zapata Farmers Market.  It’s located further to the east in the Zona Romántica.  It may be a little bit out of your way, but it’s still only a 10-minute walk from the park.

18. ‘The Sail’ at Muelle de Playa Los Muertos

I told you we’d make it back to the waterfront, and here we are. ‘The Sail’ graces the muelle, or dock, of Playa Los Muertos.  This lovely piece of  art and architecture  was designed by architect José de Jesús Torres Vega.

The metal curves gracefully around a tall central pole and looks much like a sail billowing in the breeze of  Banderas Bay.

Take a walk out on the dock and you can circle ‘The Sail’.   From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy some  excellent views of Puerto Vallarta’s fantastic beaches .  Playa Olas Altas sits to the north, with Playa Los Muertos to the south.

19. Take a walk on the beach

No trip to Puerto Vallarta can be complete without a  walk on the beach !  So, take off those shoes, walk down to the shore, and wiggle your toes in the sand.  I’m pretty sure it’s some sort of therapy.  At least, I always feel my stress ebbing away when I walk along the shore.

You’ll find many excellent beaches just minutes away from the Puerto Vallarta cruise port.   Playa Los Muertos is one of the most famous and popular beaches in Puerto Vallarta  and is part of the Zona Romántica.

There many beachfront hotels, restaurants, and resorts lining up along Playa Los Muertos as well as Playa Olas Altas to the north.  We walked all the way down Playa Los Muertos until it ends in a rocky outcropping.

If you want to relax on the beach, there are various places to rent a beach chair.  Or if you’d like to be more active, there are many  aquatic activities to enjoy such as boating, fishing, or parasailing.

20. Puerto Magica

After a fun day of exploring Puerto Vallarta, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to your cruise ship!

You don’t want to be that person who is running to try to catch a departing ship.  (Because generally, the ship isn’t going to wait on you – the company has to pay a lot for the time they spend occupying the dock.)

The Puerto Vallarta cruise terminal gives you one final present as you head back to your ship:  the  Puerto Magico sign , complete with one last seahorse!

Puerto Vallarta Beaches Near the Cruise Port

The Pacific Ocean beaches are the main draws to Puerto Vallarta. Visitors enjoy golden sand along with aquamarine waters.

Abundant activities can be found in the area from snorkeling and diving to skiing and parasailing. For a more relaxing vibe, there are plenty of quiet shores for you to enjoy as well.

Cruise Port Beaches

Cruise visitors to Puerto Vallarta have two choices: so-so beaches within walking distances and great beaches that require transportation to reach them.

Beaches within walking distance are visible from the cruise ship as it pulls into the port. Just look to the right of the port. They are part of the lower end hotel district to the south of the docks.

One of the best and most popular options for cruise visitors is a trip south to the most active stretch of the boardwalk or malecon. Visitors will need a taxi, public bus or excursion bus to get there.

Shore excursions to better beaches that include transportation and some amenities will cost about $45 per person. A 25-minute trip to Sabal Playa north of the port is one example. Amenities include a beach chair and umbrella. The total excursion time is four to five hours.

An example of a beach excursion that is more expensive and also has more amenities is a boat trip to Majahuitas Cove and Yelapa Beach. Visitors can hike to a waterfall and natural pool and tour the Yelapa fishing village. The cost is $90 for teens and adults with discounts for children. Amenities in this example include lunch and open bar.

A more expensive option with more amenities is Las Caletas. This highly rated, six and a half hour shore excursion costs about $140 for adults and teens with discounts for children. The excursion includes three beaches, gourmet lunch, open bar, kayaking, animal adventures and other activities. It is a nature reserve accessible only by boat.

Prices, amenities and destinations for beach excursions like the ones above are subject to change at any time.

Best Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

When I visit a cruise port , sometimes it’s more relaxing to just explore the city on your own.

Intricate designs decorate the Malecón in Puerto Vallarta

Intricate sand sculpture along the Puerto Vallarta Malecón

Triton and Siren sculpture is straight out of classical Greek mythology

The Puerto Vallarta sign, in giant letters, surrounds the iconic 'Boy on the Seahorse' statue

Los Arcos of Puerto Vallarta serve as a backdrop to the open-air theater

(If you’re on a Mexican Riveria cruise, you’ll want to take a Cabo San Lucas tour to see its gorgeous natural arch formations! Learn more about the city in this Cabo guide .)

The Friendship Fountain, also known as the Dancing Dolphins Fountain, honors sister city Santa Barbara, CA

The colorful artwork 'Vendedores de Pescado' is just across the boardwalk from the Naval History Museum

The Vallarta Dancers sculpture is like a moment frozen in time

Elaborate bandstand, or gazebo, graces the central Plaza de Armas

11. Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, or Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe , is the second main symbol of Puerto Vallarta (along with the Seahorse).  ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’ is another name for the Virgin Mary, the patron saint of Mexico .

Magnificent Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the church with a crown

Purchase vibrant ceramics our Huichol beaded art at the Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale

During Burton’s filming of ‘ Night of the Iguana ’ in Puerto Vallarta, Elizabeth Taylor moved here to be with him – even though he was married to someone else at the time!

Vibrant mural of a seahorse decorates a sidewalk in Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romántica

It really has a Barcelona flavor with the flowing curves and brightly colored mosaics, like the works of Antoni Gaudí in Parc Güell.  (Barcelona is another of my favorite travel destinations — check out my favorite Barcelona attractions .)

Colorful teal and lavender peacock adorns a bench in Parque Lázaro Cárdenas

Mosaic bench styled with a Día de Muertos flair

I ran (okay, walked) from one bench to another like a kid in a candy store, ooh-ing and aah-ing over the gorgeous designs and vibrant colors.  And, of course, taking lots of pictures!

It’s certainly a tough decision, but I’d have to say that my absolute favorite bench design is this cutie, for both the design and the sentiment: ‘True love is you, love’.

Gorgeous mosaic of beach scene with flamingoes and a palm tree

The graceful curves of 'The Sail'

Taking a boat trip is one of the easiest Puerto Vallarta day trips !

Puerto Vallarta is located on Banderas Bay, which is an excellent place for swimming and other water-based activities!

17 Mexico Cruise Mistakes that Will Ruin Your Vacation

A re you going on a Mexico cruise? As someone who’s been on more than 25 cruises, including two to Mexico, I’m sharing some cruise tips that I have learned along the way. So, keep reading to find out what not to do when you’re on a Mexico cruise.

Mexico Cruise Mistakes to Avoid

1. not bringing your passport .

Many people mistakenly believe that they can go to Mexico without a passport. While it’s true that US citizens can enter the United States with a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID on closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end at the same U.S. port), it’s still better to be safe than sorry.

You should bring your passport in case you have to fly back to the US early due to an emergency. It’s also important to always keep your passport with you and not leave it in the cruise ship cabin. In case you are left behind, you will need your passport to fly to the next port and catch up with the cruise ship.

2. Port Agent

Always ask for the port agent’s contact information before you get off the cruise ship. Every port has a port agent appointed by your cruise line, and they’re the ones to approach in case you need help or find yourself stranded.

The shore excursion staff usually hands out a map that includes the port agent’s contact information, so make sure to keep it with you in case you need to contact them for any reason.

3. Don’t Drink the Ice

Don’t drink tap water and ice in Mexico—you can get sick! Many people who visit Mexico know to stay away from tap water, but they often forget about the ice in their drinks, which can make you sick.

To prevent this from happening, make sure you order drinks without ice in Mexico. You will be glad you took this simple precaution during your trip!

4. Know the All-Aboard Time

Make sure you know the cruise ship’s all-aboard time before getting off the ship. Usually, you will find a sign displaying the all-aboard time at the cruise port. It’s a good idea to take a picture of this notice as a reminder.

5. Pay Attention to the Time Zones

Mexico has four different time zones, and you might find yourself stopping at two of them during a Mexican cruise. Take, for example, Puerto Vallarta, which is in the mountain time zone, and Cabo San Lucas, which is located in the Pacific time zone.

This can get confusing, but there is a simple solution. Before getting off the ship, make sure you know what time it is on board and adjust your watch or cellphone accordingly. This way, you don’t miss the ship!

6. Check the Taxi Fare

It’s always a good idea to confirm the taxi fare before getting in. Always ask your driver how much the ride to your destination will cost, and feel free to negotiate a better deal.

Even if you see a sign with taxi rates posted at the cruise port, it’s worth confirming the taxi fare with your driver to avoid being overcharged. Use the rates on the sign as a reference point, so you know what to expect. It’s also a good idea to take a picture of the sign. This way, you’ll have a reference point in case you need it later.

7. Bring Small Bills

When you go to Mexico, you should bring small bills. Many places in Mexico will take US dollars, so you don’t have to exchange them for Mexican pesos.

Do know that if you pay in US dollars, sometimes you will be given back pesos as change. If it’s a large bill, you will get a lot of Mexico pesos back in change, so it’s best to have small bills so you can pay exact and not have to get change back.

8. Not Negotiating

When shopping in Mexico, it’s perfectly acceptable to negotiate with vendors. Don’t hesitate to ask for a modest discount, and avoid buying from the first vendor you see. Since vendors sell similar souvenirs, it’s best to shop around to find the best price.

9. Don’t Wear Your Cruise Lanyard on Shore

When you’re out exploring the port in Mexico, it’s best to avoid wearing your cruise lanyard. It will make you stand out as a tourist and attract unwanted attention from thieves. Also, when you’re shopping, it’s better to negotiate prices without revealing that you’re on a cruise ship.

They will know you have a time limit to return to the ship which can go against you when negotiating prices.

10. Not Going to the Shore Excursion Talk

If it’s your first time on a Mexico cruise, you should try to attend the shore excursion talk or at least watch the replay on the cruise ship TV. During the talk, the shore excursion staff will provide useful information about the upcoming port of call, including where to go and what to do. They’ll also hand out maps and other useful materials to help you navigate the area.

Keep in mind that these shore excursion talks are usually sponsored by local stores in Mexico, so be wary of the shops they recommend. However, it’s still useful to attend these talks to learn about the sights and beaches.

Plus, during these shore excursion talks there will be raffles and giveaways- who knows, you might walk out with a bottle of wine or a free baseball cap!

11. Free Charms and Other Freebies

Watch out for freebies offered by jewelers like Diamonds International. They might give you flyers and coupons for free charms and charm bracelets to lure you into their store. However, don’t feel pressured to buy something because you’ve received a free charm. Remember that it’s a marketing tactic, and you can say no politely. Don’t feel bad, you’re not the first customer to do so!

12. Not Booking Shore Excursions Ahead of Time

Booking cruise shore excursions is a must especially if you are interested in the popular shore excursions since those end to sell out quickly. It’s best to book your shore excursions online early on and not wait until you’re onboard to avoid any disappointment.

Also, to save some money, I suggest comparinig the prices of the cruise shore excursion to independent tour operators such as Viator .

Suburbs 101 participates in affiliate programs including Amazon Associates Program and may earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

13. Not Checking the Travel Advisory

When traveling to Mexico on a cruise, it’s important to know that not all ports are safe. Many cruisers make the mistake of assuming that every port is safe, but that isn’t always the case.

You should always check the latest travel advisory from the US Department of State for the places you plan to visit. Most parts of Mexico have some travel advisory due to crime, so it’s best to stay vigilant and prepared while you’re there.

For more information on protecting yourself from theft during your cruise, check out my anti-theft tips .

14. Don’t Leave Your Valuables Unattended at the Beach

It’s important to keep a watchful eye on your personal belongings when you’re at the beach. Avoid leaving your valuable items unattended, such as your electronic devices, on your chair or towel. Thieves can easily snatch your phone, kindle, or iPad if you are not careful.

If you plan to take a dip in the water, it is best to bring your phone with you and store it in a waterproof phone case or a larger waterproof bag that can also hold your wallet. When you head into the water, keep your belongings in a beach bag with a zipper to keep your items secure. I like this beach bag because it is waterproof and has a zipper closure.

15. Don’t Drink too Much

It’s easy to overindulge on alcohol in Mexico. For example, some shore excursions offer party boats with unlimited drinks, and while shopping, you may come across tequila samples that are hard to resist.

Drinking alcohol while being exposed to the sun can be a risky combination. Just be careful, because you don’t want to get too drunk that you miss the ship!

16. Underestimating the Sun

Mexico sun can be pretty intense, and it’s easy to underestimate it. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen before stepping off the ship, even if you’re not planning to hit the beach. And if you can, throw on a hat to keep the sun off your face. Trust me, you don’t want to spend your Mexico cruise nursing a sunburn – better to be safe than sorry!

17. Don’t Bring Valuables

When you go on a Mexico cruise, it’s best to leave your valuables at home. Don’t bring designer bags and expensive jewelry to your Mexico cruise. They can make you an easy target for thieves, and you’ll have to keep an eye on them at all times, which can be stressful. Since you’ll likely be spending most of your time at the beach, it’s best to leave them at home. Or at the very least, leave them in your cabin safe or locked up in your luggage.
