The Napa Wine Project
The Best Driving Route Through Napa Valley
Of the New World wine regions, Napa Valley is considered one of the finest. Therefore, it’s a must-visit for any wine lover. It’s a premier destination for millions of Americans and world travelers alike who want to get a taste of what the California valley has to offer — in both wine and sights.
It’s no secret that Californians have a dynamic approach to business — and their approach to wine (and wine country) is no different. They’re not going to shy away from experimenting with new marketing plans or methods of producing wine. Napa Valley also has a number of unique wine tours and innovative wineries to check out. So many, in fact, that you’d have a hard time visiting them all even with an extended trip. But that’s no reason not to try!
Below, I’ll outline my preferred route for driving through Napa Valley, highlighting all of the must-see landmarks and best places to stop along the way.
Before You Start The Napa Valley spans about 30 miles, and is made up of six towns, with Calistoga in the North and Napa in the South. So, no matter which direction you’re coming from — such as San Francisco or Sacramento — you’ll be able to navigate the area pretty easily. Just be sure to keep traffic in mind when you plan your trip. Use Google Maps (or a real-time maps app equivalent) to ensure that you’re on the fastest route possible. Then, once you get to the valley, you can slow down and enjoy the scenery.
Start in the South, at Napa The best way to travel through Napa Valley is to start in the south and work your way north. You should start by checking out downtown Napa off of Route 29. Here you’ll find plenty of shopping, restaurants, wine bars, and even the Napa Valley Opera House. Depending on when you arrive, you may want to stay downtown for the night, enjoying a fine meal and a good night’s sleep before heading off to explore the rest of the valley.
Take the Scenic Route From downtown Napa, head east on Route 121 for a nice, scenic drive through the foothills. This will turn into Monticello Road, and veer north not long after. Along this road you’ll see the Monticello Rocks, a nature preserve, and Old Man Rock, which is — you guessed it — a giant rock that resembles an old man. To continue the loop around the valley, you’ll want to turn left onto Route 128 (Capell Valley Road), which will come out on the Silverado Trail, right in the heart of Napa Valley. Before you hit the Silverado Trail, check out Lake Hennessey and the Napa County Regional Park for some breathtaking views. This is a great place to hike, kayak, or simply relax.
Take the Silverado Trail Once you’ve hit the Silverado Trail, continue heading north towards Calistoga. This road will provide you with beautiful views of vineyards, and it usually sees less traffic than Route 29 (128).
Take a Detour to St. Helena From the Silverado Trail, turn left onto Pope St. and make your way into St. Helena for the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum . A visit to the museum of this imaginative author will be sure to add some education and inspiration to your trip. This would also be a great time to grab a bite to eat. From St. Helena, you’ll get onto Route 128 and head north towards Calistoga.
End Your Trip in Calistoga It won’t take long at all to get to Calistoga from St. Helena. Why not end your trip at one of the many spas in the area? Or, if you’re still feeling adventurous, head to the Oat Hill Mine Trail for a challenging hike through the gorgeous, rocky terrain. If you’re sick of hiking but still want an adventure, schedule an early-morning hot air balloon with Calistoga Balloons .
With this basic driving route in mind, feel free to branch out and add detours to some of the new wineries you’re curious about. After all, did you really go to Napa Valley if you didn’t go on a wine tour?

Begin your adventure by grabbing a bite to eat from Oxbow Public Market . A freshly baked pastry from The Model Bakery and an espresso from Ritual Coffee Roasters should do the trick. Then, continue your trip to discover plenty of things to do in Napa sans alcohol .
Trancas Crossing, Moore Creek, and Robert Louis Stevenson Parks are all gorgeous stops along the way. Stop by for a quick hike, stroll, or picnic. Admire the region’s most popular vineyards along this Napa scenic drive as well—don’t hesitate to treat yourself when it comes to dining options. Once you reach Calistoga, check out the mineral pools and hot springs. This underrated city will enchant you and keep you around for a weekend getaway.
Calistoga to St. Helena
After spending a relaxing weekend in Calistoga , get back in your vehicle to continue your Napa road trip toward St. Helena. This can be done in two ways. Take a quick straight up and down 13-minute highway route toward the small city. Or, opt for a slightly more winding trip via Petrified Forests road if you have an extra 40 minutes to spare.
As expected, this road will take you to the Petrified Forest which you should definitely stop and admire. The eerily beautiful forest boasts the largest petrified trees in the world and is a sight to behold. If you’re traveling with children, consider making a quick detour toward Porter Creek Road to check out Safari West . The 400-acre wildlife preserve will add an unexpected twist to your Wine Country road trip.
After stopping by Safari West, head back out to Calistoga Road before turning left toward St. Helena Road. Advancing further down St. Helena Road, it won’t take long until you’re surrounded again with vineyards left and right. Once you get back up on the highway, make sure to stop by Farmstead Restaurant on Maine Street for a much-needed lunch break. The fresh and organic meals will give you enough energy to tackle three Napa road trips with ease.
St. Helena to Santa Rosa
After having a freshly baked baguette dipped in NorCal's best olive oil at Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Company , you’ll be ready to be on your way toward Santa Rosa.
This Napa scenic drive retraces a bit of the previous drive’s route. You’ll be cruising along forests, lakes, and creeks as you head down the Spring Mountain and St. Helena Roads. Once you get on the Sonoma Highway, take your time exploring the little roads that lead up to great vineyards along the way.
In comparison to the first half of the drive, the second portion is much more urbanized—you’ll realize that as soon as you get on the highway. But, don’t worry, there’s still plenty of landscapes and must-see landmarks to admire in Santa Rosa. For a leisurely stroll and a beautiful lakeside picnic, head toward Spring Lake Regional Park. Here, you can enjoy hiking, biking, birding, paddling, and more fun outdoor activities.
For a cool museum trip, add the Charles M. Schulz Museum to your itinerary to check out the largest collection of original Peanuts artwork in the world. Overall, making Santa Rosa a stop on your Wine Country road trip is a decision you won’t regret.
Sage Canyon Road to Yountville
Start your Napa road trip on Sage Canyon Road and it won’t be long till you get front-row ticket views of Lake Hennessey. Put aside enough time to explore Napa County Regional Park District before you hit the road again toward Yountville.
Heading down Sage Canyon Road, you’ll find yourself briefly back on Silverado Trail before turning left on Zinfandel Lane. Have a bit of extra time to spend exploring? Head up Rutherford Hill Road on the Silverado Trail to be greeted by fantastic wineries and the gorgeous Auberge du Soleil resort. Enjoy a meal at the restaurant on the terrace overlooking the valley for an elegant, swoon-worthy dining experience.
Make a left turn as you reach Highway 128 on Zinfandel Lane. Here, you’ll pass by Rutherford and Oakville, where your foodie heart will rejoice with the abundance of dining options. Your Napa scenic drive will continue straight down toward Washington Road. Once you see the famed “Welcome to Napa” sign and Michelin-starred The French Laundry , you know you’ve arrived.
Highway 128
Highway 128 connects the Mendocino Coast to Sacramento Valley through the beautifully winding routes of Wine Country. In other words, if you’ve been looking to take a rejuvenating day trip from Sacramento , this is the way to go.
This scenic Napa drive takes you away from the usual hustle and bustle and celebrates the best of the region. Whatever portion of the highway you choose to drive, you’ll discover awesome eateries, captivating nature, world-class wineries, and beautiful architecture.
Dreaming of being in a Western? Consider checking out Geyserville. The old-timey storefronts and wooden boardwalks have a certain rustic charm to them that make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time to the Wild, Wild West. More of a Victorian architecture fan? Make Cloverdale a stop on your Napa road trip. The thriving arts community, cool stores, galleries, and boutiques will captivate you in a heartbeat.
Highway 128 has so much more to offer—the only way to find out what you like best along this w ine country road trip is to spend time discovering it yourself. The opportunities for exploration are endless.

The Perfect Napa Valley Itinerary for First-Time Visitors
- by JESS LANDER
- on OCTOBER 23, 2023
One hour north of San Francisco, all of life’s greatest indulgences — wine, food, relaxation, and adventure — can be experienced all at once in Napa Valley , one of the top Wine Country destinations in the world.
Thirty miles long and five miles wide, this small slice of heaven is home to more than 500 wineries throughout a collection of six quaint towns: Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, and Calistoga. Each has its own personality and places to discover; from Napa’s urban wine trail to Yountville’s renowned fine dining to Calistoga’s detoxifying hot springs, there’s something for every kind of traveler, whether you’re a oenophile, foodie, adventurist, or self-care aficionado.
There is also not a bad time to visit Napa Valley . While September and October are the busiest and warmest months, offering the chance to experience the annual grape harvest in action , the winter months have their own appeal. It’s quiet, uncrowded, and not too chilly with temperatures mostly hanging out in the 50s and 60s. Plus, many hotels offer hard-to-beat off-season rates. Your best chance of rain is in the spring, but the blooming fields of bright, yellow mustard also make it one of the most Instagram -worthy seasons to plan a trip.
For whenever you do decide to pack your bags and pay Napa Valley a visit, we’ve put together the perfect itinerary for the first time visitor, covering all of the “must do’s” over a long weekend trip.
Visit a Historic Winery
Reserve a hotel room in Napa so that you can be within walking distance (or just a short drive) to downtown’s many restaurants, bars, and tasting rooms. The urban chic Andaz Napa is at the heart of downtown Napa activity, where loft-style rooms are both stylish and inviting, while Milliken Creek ’s peaceful riverfront location offers guests a quieter escape just a few minutes from the downtown scene.
Spend your second day exploring the towns that put the “Valley” in “Napa Valley.” The small towns of Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, and Calistoga are referred to by locals as the “UpValley,” so use that term if you want to blend in.
Breakfast in Yountville
For breakfast, head to chef Thomas Keller’s famous Bouchon Bakery in Yountville for pastries and espresso. Most likely there will be a line out the door, but it moves quickly. If you want to double down, you can head to Mini Model across the street. This is a smaller location of the locally-acclaimed Model Bakery . Get the English muffin. It’s so good that Oprah Winfrey actually has them flown in to her. For a more leisurely breakfast, try Lucy Restaurant at the LEED Certified Bardessono , where breakfast options highlight what’s local and seasonal.
Visit a Boutique Winery
Because you visited some of the oldest, largest, and most popular wineries on Day 1, make an appointment at a boutique or family-owned winery next and compare experiences. A boutique winery can mean several things: a more personalized experience (sometimes with the winemaker or owner), less of a crowd, and super primo wines (especially Cabernet Sauvignon, which Napa Valley is best known for). Some of our favorite family-owned and boutique wineries to visit UpValley are Goosecross Cellars , Jessup Cellars , and Cliff Lede Vineyards in Yountville, William Cole in St. Helena, and Staglin Family Vineyard in Rutherford. Also in Rutherford is the family-owned Sequoia Grove Winery , where a variety of tasting experiences await. Add a seasonal cheese and charcuterie plate to your tasting if you need a snack to tide you over until lunch.
Lunch in St. Helena
For the better part of the afternoon, drive the eight miles from St. Helena to Calistoga for some spa time. This quirky, little town is best known for its healing mineral waters from natural hot springs, plus mud baths that’ll make your skin as smooth as a newborn. Make an appointment for a spa treatment ahead of time; there are so many local spas to choose from, from super luxe resorts like Indian Springs and Solage to hip boutique gems like Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs to more intimate and classically restorative escapes at The Moonacre Spa and Golden Haven Hot Springs .
If you have some time after, take a stroll down Calistoga’s main drag Lincoln Avenue and pop into CAMi Art + Wine for a tasting while admiring the contemporary art, or grab a pint at the Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery .
Dine at a World-Renowned Restaurant
Schedule your travel plans home later in the day so that you have time for one last hurrah. One of Napa Valley’s most sought-after adventures is a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the vines. We promise that the 6 AM wake up call is worth it. Don’t forget your camera!
Check out Napa Valley Aloft to schedule your flight, which often includes a post-flight sparkling wine toast.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many of the top-rated tour options start at around $120 per person; fees will increase depending on tour inclusions (such as meals, gratuities and tastings). Note that tour costs may vary by time of year and day of week.
Yes, it is recommended that you tip both your tour guide and your tasting host at each vineyard. Some tours include gratuities in rates, which may be something you want to look for when booking your tour.
None of the wineries have a dress code, so opt for casual (but not too casual) and comfortable. Think flowy sundresses, wide leg pants, khaki shorts or pants, dark jeans and nice tops (blouses, collared shirts) with supportive sandals or sneakers. You'll also want to bring a light jacket as it can get chilly on some of the vineyards, even in the summer.

We appreciated getting an overview of what to look for and expect on the following days. Paul was a great tour guide and really made the trip even more enjoyable.
The best part was driving around Napa in the open-air trolley and hearing our guide Richard give us facts about the land. It was interesting and very scenic. I can’t imagine doing a wine tour on a bus when you can do this instead!
Great way to see multiple wineries in one day without having to plan meals and all the visits ourselves. Wineries were great, food and wine were amazing, the trolley was a fun way to travel.
Definitely recommend it if you are visiting for the first time. It’s a great way to visit a few wineries worry-free!

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Ryan set up the most incredible day for us. We asked him to take us off the beaten path to some small wineries we may not have heard of. To say he exceeded our expectations is an understatement. We traveled North through Calistoga to Amici to begin our day. Private showing on the beautiful porch of the residence on property. Our host Rachel was so gracious and knowledgeable. Then Ryan joined us for a lovely lunch in Calistoga, before we proceed to one of the best experiences we have ever shared... Lerner Project private tasting in the owners home. We arrived by private road through the redwoods and vineyards. We were greeted by some beautiful deer in the woods behind the driveway. Then Patrick gave us a tour of the property, shared the owners story and history of the winery, before taking us out to see the unbelievable views. He followed this with a tasting of the amazing wines, which he paired with incredible curated cheeses- which was guided by a personalized menu. Finally we proceed to St Helena where Peter gave us a great tour of YoungInglewood property, including the vines and production room. This was followed by another great private tasting.

You might be thinking...there's got to be a catch? But, Rod is a real person -- he picked us promptly-- and yes he is indeed affordable. We stumbled across Rod's company doing a Google search and the detailed information he provided about driving a rental car caught our eye. I emailed him and got more details and we felt comfortable having him drive our rental, especially if something happened (he has the correct insurance for this). Our party of 6 visited 4 wineries (not recommended) in one day and Rod was our driver. I secured all the reservations, but asked for his input regarding timing. The day of our tasting, he was awesome -- excellent driver, friendly, knowledgeable... Bottom line, you won't regret hiring Rod!
Ryan far exceeded our expectations. He was punctual every day. Made us feel like friends and even brought us a cinnamon roll one morning and coffee another. He went out of his way to make each of our three days wonderful. We are so lucky that you were our driver. You made our trip PERFECT!

2nd time using a "driver service" First time using Napa Driver Tours. From start to finish everything about Napa Driver Tours was AMAZING!!! If you are doing a Napa Wine tour BOOK with NDT!!! I am sure all of their drivers are great but my wife and I had the pleasure of working with Ryan H. WOW he was soooooooooooo Nice and knowledgeable about the area, wineries, and random wine facts. Ryan offered GREAT suggestions about our itineraries and also kept us on track to maximize our day. Ryan was very helpful with finding hidden gems and family owned wineries. The NDR is a must use if you are touring Napa wineries! the service exceeded our expectations and the Price was Perfect! This helped make our anniversary great and we cant wait to return!

Visited the wine country with 6 friends to celebrate a 50th birthday. The owner of the VRBO Property recommended Napa Driver Tours and we couldn't be happier. Ryan listened to what we wanted to see and do and every vineyard he chose over our 2 days was a genuine EXPERIENCE. He was flexible, FUN and super informative. Will be hard to beat the experience we had!! Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a personalized tour experience.
Ryan was awesome! There is no better way to spend the day wine tasting. He planned our whole day, all we had to do was ride and drink. He made sure the day was about us. I highly recommend this company. Thank you Ryan, you are the best!
It was our first trip out to Napa, so we were a bit new to the process of the driver services out there. When we return, we will not hesitate to reach out to Napa Driver Tours again! Rod was an excellent guide to some smaller places and we ended up seeing some really nice spots that we would not have seen otherwise on the larger, more expensive tours that hit the big tourist-laden spots. He was extremely punctual and very knowledgable about the various wineries. He even made the best with our ridiculously small rental car! I would highly recommend Rod and Napa Driver Tours to anyone looking for a private driver for their trip.
Ryan was incredible!! Anyone can just drive you around, but this was a true experience. His knowledge and understanding of the culture, wines, vines and the business side of Napa was simply astounding. The time we spent in the car driving was incredibly enjoyable. We probably asked him 100 questions per day and he was always super helpful. I can totally and completely say that our trip would not have been nearly as fun or memorable without Ryan. Book him now!! You won't regret it! Tell him Walt sent you!!
After a few tries at renting limos for group trips to Napa, I wanted something less over-the-top for a day-trip with a friend visiting in April. (And quite frankly spending $80-$200+ per hour for 2 people didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.) I was thrilled to find Napa Driver Tours and Ryan, and didn't hesitate to call again for another trip last weekend for 4. From beginning to end during both of my trips with Napa Driver Tours, Ryan and team have provided fantastic, personal service and best prices in the area. Ryan is responsive, thoughtful and flexible, and gave us great recommendations for wineries, lunch and dinner spots in the area. Highly recommend, and look forward to my next trip with Napa Driver Tours!
Ryan drove us to wineries around Napa and Sonoma for 2 days and it MADE the trip! He was punctual, personable, professional and great fun. He knew so very much about the wineries, wine and the area. I would highly recommend his service to any and everyone. So glad we had his expertise!!

Megan Thee Stallion Will Bless The Hotties On Her 2024 ‘Hot Girl Summer Tour’ And Dates Are Out Now
Earlier this year, Megan Thee Stallion announced the Hot Girl Summer Tour , saying , “I feel like I’ve never been able to be outside doing my own thing during the summer, since like 2019. So this is going to be the first time that I drop an album on time for the summer. I do want to give the hotties the Megan Thee Stallion experience.”
Then, last week, she confirmed the cities the tour would be heading to, but didn’t share the exact tour dates. She said, though, that they’d be out on March 20, and since that’s today, the dates are here. GloRilla is set to join for the North American shows.
The general on-sale for tickets starts on March 22 at 10 a.m. local time. There’s also a Citi pre-sale kicking off on March 20 at 1 p.m. local time, and additional pre-sales running before the general on-sale. Visit Meg’s website for more ticket information.
