The 44 Most Anticipated Tours of 2024: Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, and More

By Pitchfork

Mitski Burna Boy Olivia Rodrigo and more

It’s looking like a busy year for some of the world’s biggest touring artists, with packed schedules from Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Bad Bunny, Foo Fighters, the Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Green Day, and many more. A few touring institutions, meanwhile, are just wrapping up, from Adele’s time in Las Vegas to Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden residency and Bob Dylan’s seemingly never-ending Rough and Rowdy Ways trek. Some things, however, just never seem to change: You can expect the Ty Segalls and King Gizzards of the world to feature on these roundups till kingdom come, with reliable indie-rock staples like Destroyer, Wednesday, and Alvvays still out in force fighting for the cause, too.

After a residency that has spanned the best part of a year and brought hundreds of thousands of Adele fans to Las Vegas, the Tottenham superstar is closing the run with dates from January through June. “This residency, these shows have changed my life. I desperately needed to fall back in love with performing live again, and I have,” she said in the announcement. “It’s just made me realize how much I really enjoy being on stage, that I’m bloody good at it and that it is 100% where I belong! So let’s go one last time before I turn into a showgirl forever!” –Jazz Monroe

Artists Who Are Going On Tour In 2024: The Rolling Stones, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo & More

The year is just getting started, but 2024 is already stacked with exciting tours. Open up your calendar and start planning with this sprawling list of announced 2024 tours.

Just a couple of years ago, live music still looked uncertain — would variant X, Y or Z derail the train for the umpteenth time? But in that regard, 2023 felt almost totally in the clear — and that's why it feels like the rubber band is stretched back for 2024, and it's ready to launch.

Sure, compiling every musical act who's touring in 2024 might be impossible. But GRAMMY.com's stylistic purview is far and wide: country, hardcore, soul, R&B, rap, indie rock, you name it. As such, we're giving it our best shot — and will continue to update the list as more tours are announced.

Without further ado, here's a major cross section of the 2024 touring landscape as currently announced — from Alvvays to Adam Ant , from Def Leppard to Danny Brown.

Laura Pausini : Laura Pausini World Tour Jan. 6 - April 6 North & Latin America

Italian singer (and the Latin Recording Academy's Person Of The Year) Laura Pausini is venturing through North & Latin America in the spring.

The reunited shoegaze greats just released a well-loved new album, everything is alive — which is currently taking on new shades onstage. See them in 2024, on an extensive tour of Europe with Japan dates, and then a plethora of U.S. stops.

Madison Beer : The Spinnin Tour Jan. 17 - June 13 UK, Europe, & U.S.

The pop, hip-hop, EDM, and R&B star released Silence Between Songs in 2023; she'll support it with The Spinnin Tour, which heads stateside from Europe across the spring of 2024.

Drake with J.Cole : It's All A Blur - Big As The What? Jan. 18 - March 27 U.S.

Hip-hop kingpins Drake and J. Cole are headed on a co-headlining tour; some Drake gigs will be J.-Cole-less.

Ana Tijoux Jan. 18 - April 13 North America, UK, & Europe

Chilean musician Ana Tijoux hasn't undergone a world tour since 2018, but she's about to change that with a run of European gigs following the release of VIDA , her first album in several years. .

Melanie Martinez Jan. 19 - June 27 North America, Asia & Australia

Alt-popper Melanie Martinez will segue her PORTALS Tour into The Trilogy Tour, which will see her revive her alter ego "Cry Baby." See her, in this persona, in the U.S. and across the pond.

Mitski Jan. 26 - June 6 UK, Europe, & U.S.

4 Ways Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS World Tour Shows A New Side Of The Pop Princess

Olivia Rodrigo not only boasts a luminous performance on her first-ever arena tour, but also showcases an undiluted moment of self-expression.

Since releasing her debut single three years ago, Olivia Rodrigo has not shown any signs of slowing down. And with a sold-out arena tour underway, the three-time GRAMMY winner is keeping that momentum going in awe-inspiring fashion.

As the GUTS World Tour — Rodrigo's first headlining arena trek — kicked off at Palm Springs' Acrisure Arena on Feb. 23, the pop star immersed fans with a dedicated space to examine the moments when you feel unpretty, never have the perfect perfume, or can't help being unapologetically feral. Blooming under a full, Pisces moon, Olivia Rodrigo's luminous performance marked an undiluted moment of self-expression.

Toeing the line between fragile girlhood and brutal adulthood, Rodrigo was unafraid to embrace the Olivia who once was and who is becoming. And as a result, she unleashed a fresh, freer side of herself — one she's ready to share with the world.

Below, read through four ways Olivia Rodrigo's Guts World Tour unveiled a liberated version of the chart-topping superstar.

She's Unafraid To Celebrate Herself

What makes Rodrigo's GUTS Tour magnificent is it's less about the finer details — like massive sets or onstage collaborations — and more so about her journey since her rise to fame. Rodrigo's honest examination of herself was refreshingly lethal in the zeitgeist of pop music's increasingly formulaic state. In 90 minutes, the show's comparably straightforward set list made sure the album's focus on autonomy was central, woven with her simultaneously intimate and acute insights.

At the start of the show, the backdrop displayed perfectly arranged lit candles spelling out her album's title. Before singing "teenage dream," she proclaimed, "I just turned 21!" (her birthday was Feb. 20). "I'm really f—cking excited about it. I went to the gas station the other day and bought a pack of cigarettes!" As she fervently played the piano, she reminisced about writing the song, noting that she penned it ahead of her last birthday as a teenager, "when I was really afraid of growing up," she admitted to the crowd.

All throughout her melodic existential crisis, a video of her younger self was projected onto the screen. She ended the song with an audio of herself as a child, someone off camera asking her to introduce herself; it was so emblematic of the blitheness youth often brings. And though she recently celebrated a young adult milestone, it was still rather jarring to hear her youthful voice deliver the track's heavy lyrics.

The next two songs served up a mix of painful vulnerability and complete release. Some of the most painful sentiments of GUTS ' "pretty isn't pretty" — "I started to skip lunch, stopped eating cake on birthdays," for one — were the lines the audience most enthusiastically sang along to. After hefty musings, it made perfect sense for her to transition to "love is embarrassing," where she allowed herself to let loose. Prancing around on stage, she held up a big "L" to her forehead before laughing and stomping out flailing choreography. The track ended with all of her backup dancers bent over, shimmying their derrieres as Rodrigo sent a shimmering wink to showgoers.

Rodrigo allowed seriousness and silliness to exist simultaneously, and it was clear that every single person in the crowd felt heard. It made the night all the more special, knowing even a star whose impact is nearly immeasurable can also "feel like s—" on their birthday — and it was entirely ok .

She's Signaling Her Evolution While Honoring Her Past

Fans who have known Rodrigo since her starring role in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark have met many iterations of Olivia Rodrigo: The one who made palatable Disney Channel music, the one breaking ground with her sound, the one unafraid to embrace her pop-punk propensity. The show underscored her evolution as an artist, while being unafraid to make references to her past.

She unabashedly looked back to past Olivia in a quietly powerful performance of "All I Want," a track she wrote when starring on Disney+'s "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series." Despite the glamour of her propelling fame, Rodrigo absolutely refused to be anybody but herself throughout her time on the show. "I was literally peeing my pants on the set" while demonstrating her lyrics to the showrunners, she professes, laughing and shaking her head as she sat on the ground, with nothing but a guitar player backing her silken vocals.

It was a decidedly striking move to reference her squeakier past in a more simplistic form — especially because, as the concert progressed, her performance only became more and more complex and risqué. In a daring act, the dazzling purple backdrop ignited as fallen candles virtually burned everything in sight and, through the ashes, emerged something a bit darker. Now clad in a bold, red jumpsuit, Rodrigo delivered the GUTS hidden track "obsessed" while balanced on top of a glass floor, thrusting her hips into the air and screaming into the backdrop.

Though her vocal delivery was nearly identical to the studio versions of her songs, what made the show all the more mesmerizing was how deeply she felt each and every one of her lines. Even more so than her vulnerability, the fury Rodrigo fully embraced throughout the show was perhaps one of the most freeing aspects of it.

Snatching her purple guitar with unhindered passion, she whipped her hair and fell to the floor while thrumming along to "brutal," to match her guitarist beat-for-beat in intensity. In another audacious move, Rodrigo even grabbed a drumstick out of her drummer's hand and began whacking the drums as well, throwing the stick into the air after the final beat.

During an almost-required lyric change on "all american b—," she sang she's grabbing her "all-American tits" rather than just her "all-American hips," — which, of course, necessitated an aggressive chest clench. In one of the most memorable moments of the night, Rodrigo asked the crowd to think of someone who "really pisses them off" and commanded everyone to scream as loud as they could. Shutting off the lights, the arena was filled with nothing but raw yodels and screams into the void — and it was glorious.

As the stakes have gradually become higher and higher, Rodrigo's performances came down to something easily decipherable: shameless joy with a side of defiance.

Chappell Roan at the 2024 GUTS World Tour

She's Highlighting Diverse Talent Front & Center

Rodrigo's choice of supporting acts further display her understanding of dynamic artistry, as buzzing pop and indie acts Chappell Roan , The Breeders, PinkPantheress and Remi Wolf will rotate through the opening slot. Roan is support for the first stretch, and her set underscored the meaning of a true pop princess in the making.

Delivering flawless vocals and addicting charisma, Roan proved she knows how to serve a memorable performance. As she skipped through the stage and clutched her guitarist while hitting an immaculate high note during "My Kink Is Karma," it was clear that Roan is ready for her arrival as pop royalty.

Nothing about her performance screamed rookie; if anything, it was a masterclass in how to take up space. When she belted, "Oh mama, I'm just having fun on the stage in my heels. It's where I belong!" from the outstanding single "Pink Pony Club," she jumped into the air, pure bliss emanating all the way from head to her sparkly, silver boot-clad toes.

Her Community Of Fans Is Unmatched — And She's Here For It

Despite what was going on onstage, Rodrigo's show made it clear that her authenticity has helped her build quite the loyal following. Along with scream-singing the majority of the set list, fans were dressed to the nines, some adorning elaborate recreations of her music video and performance outfits.

Her fellow Pisces were celebrating their birthdays, wearing Olivia Rodrigo-themed sashes — some turning 13, some 30. All around the arena, fans ran up to one another wishing each other happy birthdays, asking how the other made a certain outfit. Bows, à la Sandy Liang, were sprinkled throughout the crowd, and even became an integral part of Rodrigo's choreography during "lacy."

At the surface, it's easy to dismiss Rodrigo's fandom — especially given her more sanitized, mainstream roots in the industry. Navigating through the crowd, you would hear disgruntled murmurs from security staff, dismissing everyone as just "an annoying group of 14 year old girls" — despite the diversity the audience actually boasted.

Despite it all, Rodrigo became a beacon of acceptance. Suspended above the audience on a crescent moon during GUTS ' "logical" and SOUR 's "enough for you" — one of the more poignant moments of the show — she took the time to shout out and get closer to those in the nosebleed sections. "I see you!" she belted out, later taking the time to shine the camera on cute couples and exquisite ensembles during her set. Those three words are precisely why Rodrigo's music has such wide appeal — she speaks to those who have felt easily discarded, like they were too much, too loud, too brash.

The night ended with star-shaped confetti floating down to the crowd after a buoyant performance of "get him back!" As the clean-up crew unleashed industrial sized vacuums on the streamers, young fans scrambled about, giggling as they tried to grab as many as possible to bring home, some sticking them in their hair as they leapt about the emptying arena.

Olivia Rodrigo's superpower is her acute ability to make these painful feelings of girlhood feel so uniting. In between the heartbreak and growing pains is this ephemeral moment of unguarded joy, and she brought it all to the GUTS World Tour.

Songbook: The Ultimate Guide To Rihanna's Reign, From Her Record-Breaking Hits To Unforgettable Collabs

As the world eagerly awaits Rihanna's musical comeback, GRAMMY.com takes a deep dive into the superstar's catalog and celebrates her evolution from teen idol to beloved icon.

A chance meeting changed Rihanna 's life.

The singer was just 15 years old when she met producer Evan Rogers, who was vacationing with his wife in Barbados. Rogers recognized Rihanna's potential, and invited her to an audition in his hotel suite.

Shortly after her 16th birthday, Rihanna left her home country for the U.S. to record a demo, which included her breakthrough hit "Pon de Replay." The demo found its way into Jay-Z 's hands, and Hov signed the teen artist to Def Jam and the label expedited her 2005 debut album, aptly titled Music of the Sun .

"When I left Barbados, I didn't look back," Rihanna told Entertainment Weekly in 2007. "I wanted to do what I had to do [to succeed], even if it meant moving to America."

Twenty years later, Rihanna is a renowned entertainer-turned-mogul. She has sold over 40 million albums worldwide, garnered over 12 billion Spotify streams, achieved 14 Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, and won nine GRAMMY Awards. Even her business ventures have been a massive success, as her Fenty Beauty brand is worth $2.8 billion.

Though it's been close to a decade since Rihanna's last studio album, 2016's ANTI , she reminded the world of her reign with her 2023 Super Bowl halftime show — which also marked her first time taking the stage in five years. Performing hit after hit while unveiling a baby bump, her 13-minute set became one of the most-watched halftime shows of all time with over 121 million viewers.

In honor of Rihanna's 36th birthday on Feb. 20, GRAMMY.com is revisiting the monstrous hits, ambitious projects, brow-raising visuals, and iconic collabs that propelled her to international stardom — and why it's all put her in a league of her own.

A New Island Girl In Town

True to her Carribean heritage, Rihanna's dancehall-inspired debut single "Pon de Replay" earned the then 17-year-old Barbados native her first entry on the Hot 100 at an impressive No. 2. Her official introduction to the world also hit No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart; she boasts 33 on the tally, second behind only the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna .

Follow-up single "If It's Lovin' That You Want" stalled at No. 36 on the Hot 100, but still whetted fans' appetite — as did her debut album, Music of the Sun , which is mostly comprised of dance-pop and dancehall tracks with hints of R&B (like "Willing to Wait"). Plus, her reimagining of Dawn Penn's 1994 reggae classic "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" is still so fun to listen to after all these years.

A mere eight months later, Rihanna's sophomore effort, 2006's A Girl Like Me , arrived to an eager audience. Defying the sophomore slump, she celebrated her first No. 1 with the ubiquitous lead single "SOS," which famously samples Soft Cell's 1981 hit, "Tainted Love." While A Girl Like Me is filled with high-energy, danceable tracks (including the nostalgic "Break It Off" with Sean Paul ), Rihanna's second single was the melodramatic ballad "Unfaithful."

Penned by then-labelmate Ne-Yo , "Unfaithful" peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100. More importantly, it showed a different side to Rihanna, proving that she could channel deep emotion when the performance calls for it. It also marked Rihanna's first time veering away from her "girl next door" image, as the song's subject matter deals with infidelity.

A Girl Like Me contains many fan favorites, from the laid-back "We Ride" to standouts "Dem Haters" and "Kisses Don't Lie." The latter is a reggae-rock hybrid that sounds like a catalyst for some of Rihanna's edgier tunes like "Breakin' Dishes" from 2007's Good Girl Gone Bad era. Touching ballads"Final Goodbye" and "A Million Miles Away" showcase her voice beautifully, foreshadowing later big-vocal numbers like "Love on the Brain."

An Icon In The Making

Rihanna was a familiar face by 2007, but with the arrival of her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad , she graduated from cookie-cutter pop star to bonafide icon.

Produced by Tricky Stewart , the LP's juggernaut lead single "Umbrella" featuring Jay-Z skyrocketed to No. 1 in 17 countries. Between striking images of Rihanna's silver-painted silhouette in the accompanying video and the now-iconic "ella-ella, eh, eh, eh" hook, "Umbrella" thrust the then 19-year-old into another stratosphere. Her confident delivery also commanded attention in a way fans and critics hadn't heard before.

The transformative era also birthed the gritty "Shut Up and Drive," on which Rihanna channels her inner rock star. The next two singles cracked the top 10: an affectionate duet with Ne-Yo,  "Hate That I Love You," which showed off Rihanna's softer side, and the party-starting, Michael Jackson -sampling "Don't Stop the Music," which cemented her place in the digital era.

The melancholy "Rehab" is a clever metaphor for lost love, co-written by Timbaland and Justin Timberlake . Despite being Good Girl Gone Bad 's lowest-charting single, Timberlake heralded the song as "the bridge for her to be accepted as an adult in the music industry."

Good Girl Gone Bad remains Rihanna's best-selling album and marks her greatest reinvention as she adopted a more rebellious sound. She also won her first GRAMMY in 2008 (Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Umbrella") and scored four other nominations, including Record Of The Year. The album's reissue spawned two more No. 1s: "Take a Bow" and "Disturbia," the latter of which acts like a prelude to Rated R , which saw Rihanna exploring darker themes.

Nine months before the release of 2009's Rated R , Rihanna was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown . On the deeply personal album, she translated her pain into art. Through lead single "Russian Roulette" and bitingly catchy anthems "Stupid in Love," "Fire Bomb," "Photographs," "Cold Case Love," and "The Last Song," Rihanna explored her angst and confusion.

But to focus solely on the domestic violence incident undermines Rihanna's artistic vision.

Following three multi-platinum albums in a three-year span, Rihanna's rebranding as a rebel at heart reached its apex. The singer had grown in leaps and bounds while taking musical risks, even penning nine of Rated R 's 13 tracks (she had no writing credits on Good Girl Gone Bad ).

The road to Rihanna's most badass anthems — including "Bitch Better Have My Money" — can be traced back to Rated R . Case in point: Her bravado is loud and clear on "Hard," "Wait Your Turn," and "G4L." On "Rockstar 101," which features legendary rocker Slash , Rihanna declares her power: "Six inch walker/ Big sh— talker/ I never play the victim/ I'd rather be a stalker."

Badgal RiRi returned to her dancehall roots on her fifth No. 1 "Rude Boy," which offsets the album's harrowing motif. Final single "Te Amo" didn't chart, but garnered a great deal of attention as the Latin-infused Stargate production depicts Rihanna being enticed by a female love interest.

Rated R showcased Rihanna's undeniable star power, and allowed her to shed her good-girl image once and for all.

A Partygoer's Dream

Following the career-pivoting Rated R , 2010's Loud offered a welcome return to the West Indian artist's earlier sound. The album feels like one big celebration of life, as evidenced by Rihanna's fire-engine red hair and No. 1 singles "Only Girl (In the World)" and "What's My Name?" (the latter of which was Rih's first collaboration with Drake ).

Best described as "Don't Stop the Music" 2.0, the effervescent "Only Girl" marked her eminent return to the dance floor and took home a GRAMMY for Best Dance Recording in 2011. While "What's My Name?" may not outshine Rih and Drizzy's other collabs — including 2011's "Take Care" or 2016's "Work" — the second she sings, "Hey, boy, I really wanna see if you can go downtown with a girl like me," it's impossible not to whine your waist to the riddim.

Easily one of Rihanna's most overlooked hits, "Cheers (Drink to That)" is built around an unexpected sample of Avril Lavigne 's 2002 hit "I'm With You," but it works surprisingly well as a party anthem. That same carefree spirit can be heard in the feminist track "Raining Men," which features Nicki Minaj — their first of two collabs, as they joined forces again for "Fly," the final single off the rapper's iconic Pink Friday album.

A playful ode to sadomasochism and bondage, "S&M" contains some of Rihanna's most provocative lyrics: "Sticks and stones may break my bones/ But chains and whips excite me," she declares on the chorus.

Banned in 11 countries upon its release, the accompanying video features Rihanna tied up in pink rope, dancing with a blowup doll, and donning a Playboy bunny-esque costume as damning newsreels about herself flash across the screen. But Rihanna's love of kink made her an even bigger star: "S&M" produced a remix with Britney Spears and earned Rihanna her 10th No. 1 single. With this feat, she became the youngest artist to attain the most chart-toppers in a five-year span.

On "Man Down," Rihanna's patois is in full effect as she takes listeners through a gripping tale about murdering her abuser. "What started out as a simple altercation/ Turned into a real sticky situation," she laments in the opening verse, amplified by siren noises in the background. There's something so satisfying about Rihanna's Bajan accent as she unfurls "Rum-pum-pum-pum" repeatedly over an intensifying reggae beat that would make Sister Nancy and Bob Marley proud.

Nominated for Album Of The Year at the 2021 GRAMMYs, Loud is Rihanna's second most commercially successful LP — and for good reason. It was especially refreshing to see Rihanna emerge from one of the darkest periods of her life as exuberant as ever.

An Unapologetic Queen

Sonically and thematically, Talk That Talk doesn't break new ground, but Rih's DGAF attitude is front and center with plenty of sexual innuendos: Songs like "S&M" and "Rude Boy" seem pretty tame next to "Cockiness (Love It)," which features longtime friend-turned-boyfriend A$AP Rocky on its remix. "Suck my cockiness/ Lick my persuasion/ Eat my poison/ And swallow your pride down, down," she commands in the tantalizing chorus.

At just over a minute long, "Birthday Cake" leaves nothing to the imagination ("It's not even my birthday, but he wanna lick the icing off"). Rihanna controversially released a full-length version in the form of a remix with Chris Brown.

On an album that mostly sees Rihanna singing about her sexual fantasies, "We All Want Love" pulls back the curtain as it reveals her desire for true love: "And some say love ain't worth the buck/ But I'll give my last dime/ To have what I've only been dreaming about."

Her longing continues in "Where Have You Been," which flaunts Rihanna's versatility, flipping Geoff Mack's 1959 country song "I've Been Everywhere" into an infectious EDM banger. Lead single "We Found Love" is undeniably the biggest hit to stem from the Talk That Talk era, spending 10 consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100.

Boosting Calvin Harris ' career, "We Found Love" presents one juxtaposition after the other: dark yet gleaming, euphoric yet sobering, fraught yet hopeful. Rihanna relies on more than just evocative lyrics to tell her story; accompanying synthesizers and alarm bells help to paint a picture as well. Met with controversy, its intense visuals portraying a drug-fueled, toxic relationship — and featuringwhat many speculated was a Chris Brown look-alike — earned RiRi a GRAMMY for Best Long Form Music Video in 2013.

Seven years into an already extraordinary career, 2012's Unapologetic became Rihanna's first album to debut at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. Its lead single "Diamonds" resonated in an equally major way, giving Rih her 12th No. 1 on the Hot 100.

Written by Sia , the power ballad kicked off another exciting era for the Barbadian singer, who unleashes an impassioned vocal performance. One of Rihanna's most precious offerings to date, "Diamonds" emerged as a self-love mantra due to its uplifting "Shine bright like a diamond" chant.

Vocally, Rihanna's strength lies in her ability to evoke raw emotion à la "Stay." Featuring Mikky Ekko , the stripped-down, slow-burning piano ballad narrowly missed the top spot on the Hot 100 but gave Rihanna her 24th top 10 hit, surpassing Whitney Houston 's record of 23 in 2013.

Her swagger is boisterous in "Phresh Out the Runway," "Jump," and strip club anthem "Pour It Up," but "Nobody's Business" really drives home the album's theme of being unbothered. Her decision to join forces with Chris Brown yet again perplexed fans and critics alike, though the track itself is an irresistible production that features a genius interpolation of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel."

Further down the track list, "Love Without Tragedy / Mother Mary" is as autobiographical as it gets, and further taps into Rihanna's emotionally vulnerable side. "Mr. Jesus, I'd love to be a queen/ But I'm from the left side of an island/ Never thought this many people would even know my name," she pleads in the seven-minute two-parter.

Unapologetic spawned fewer hit singles compared to Rihanna's previous efforts. Its win for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2014 GRAMMYs, however, proved that Rihanna's reign wasn't letting up anytime soon.

While recording her then-forthcoming album, ANTI , Rihanna delivered what is arguably the single most unapologetic moment of her career: "Bitch Better Have My Money." The backstory is almost inconceivable given Rihanna's awe-inspiring billionaire status, but in 2009, Rihanna faced bankruptcy due to her accountants mishandling her funds — and thus "Bitch" was born six years later in 2015.

With lyrics like "Your wife in the backseat of my brand new foreign car" over a cryptic-sounding trap beat and an accompanying video depicting kidnapping and torturing her debtors, "Bitch" is not for the faint-hearted. The one-off single is so quintessentially Rihanna that it notably kicked off her Super Bowl halftime show.

An In-Demand Collaborator

While bestowing hit after hit on her own, Rihanna generously lent her distinct voice to some of her biggest peers. 2008 marks one of the earliest instances of her Midas touch: She flirts with funk in Maroon 5 's underappreciated "If I Never See Your Face Again" before hopping on T.I .'s "Live Your Life," which shot straight to No. 1 on the Hot 100.

In 2009, Rihanna joined Jay-Z and Kanye West for the militant "Run This Town," sounding defiant as ever in the intro. She was called upon again for West's horn-laden "All of the Lights," flying solo on the hook followed by a star-studded choir that included Alicia Keys , John Legend , Fergie , and Elton John . Both larger-than-life productions won GRAMMYs for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2010 and 2012, respectively.

In between joining forces with Hov and Ye, Rihanna assisted Eminem in "Love the Way You Lie," which struck a nerve with many for its gut-wrenching lyrics shedding a light on abusive relationships. (Rih recorded an equally moving sequel for her Loud album.) Three years later, the two confronted their inner demons in "The Monster," and their musical chemistry scored a GRAMMY in 2015 for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Amid smash collabs, Rihanna and Coldplay 's intricate "Princess of China" number gets lost in the shuffle, but it speaks to her charm as it's the band's first album (2011's Mylo Xyloto ) to feature another artist. Another overlooked jam, her sultry "Can't Remember to Forget You" duet with Shakira sees both stars trade lines about struggling to let go of an undeserving lover.

On paper, a collaboration between Rihanna, Kanye West, and Sir Paul McCartney may seem strange, but the unlikely trio is further proof that opposites attract. Their "FourFiveSeconds" is a pop-folk hybrid with a universal message about carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. It's yet another example of Rihanna's willingness to push past her comfort zone to create something unique.

A year later, Rihanna got listeners on their feet by way of the Taylor Swift -penned "This Is What You Came For" with Calvin Harris. Understated compared to the duo's previous megahits ("We Found Love" and "Where Have You Been"), Harris' signature DJing style and Rih's ethereal vocals are a perfect match.

In 2017, Rih, DJ Khaled and Bryson Tiller dropped the song of the summer with "Wild Thoughts," which heavily borrows from Carlos Santana 's 1999 GRAMMY-winning "Maria Maria." It may be DJ Khaled's song, but RiRi owns it from the very moment she utters, "I don't know if you could take it/ Know you wanna see me nakey, nakey, naked." The bop reached No. 2 on the Hot 100.

She spits bars in Kendrick Lamar 's "Loyalty" and "Lemon" with N.E.R.D. , the latter of which comes close to rivaling your favorite rappers' verses: "You can catch me, Rih, in the new La Ferrar'/ And the truck behind me got arms/ Yeah, longer than LeBron/ Just waitin' for my thumb like The Fonz."

No matter what genre Rihanna touches or what artist she links up with, she brings her full self to each session whilst completely immersing herself into the music — taking on different personas to make the collab well worth it.

An Artist Fully Realized

With 13 No. 1s and twice as many top 10 hits under her belt, Rihanna set out to create timeless music instead of chasing a radio-friendly formula with her 2016 magnum opus, ANTI .

But that shift began with 2015's criminally underrated "American Oxygen." Her most political statement at the time, the goosebump-inducing lyrics detail Rihanna's journey as an immigrant, foreshadowing her then soon-to-be massive Fenty Beauty success. "We sweat for a nickel and a dime/ Turn it into an empire," she sings in the chorus.

Released four years after Unapologetic — her longest gap between albums at the time — ANTI illustrated Rihanna's greater desire for quality over quantity. "I needed the music to match my growth," she told Vogue in 2016 about the making of ANTI . "I didn't want to get caught up with anything the world liked, anything the radio liked, anything that I liked, that I've already heard. I just wanted it to be me."

The black-and-white, red paint-splattered album cover signals a rebirth, featuring a real-life image of Rihanna as a child. ANTI lives up to its name in its first 40 seconds, via opening track "Consideration." The minute she declares, "I got to do things my own way, darling," it's apparent that ANTI is not your average Rihanna album.

Lead single "Work" is the closest to pre- ANTI Rihanna on an album that defies expectations. But the dancehall masterpiece is one of a kind for Rih's refusal to water down the Jamaican patois (different from her native language of Bajan Creole) — proving that she is fully aware of her impact as one of the biggest Caribbean-born artists to make it in the U.S.

Many non-understanding listeners described it as "gibberish" at the time. Yet, the general public didn't seem to mind: About a month after its release, "Work" became Rihanna's 14th and longest-running chart-topper on the Hot 100. Weeks later, ANTI became her second LP to top the Billboard 200 chart. Subsequently, Rihanna held the No. 1 spots on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 simultaneously, her second time achieving such an impressive feat.

ANTI is full of pleasant surprises that show off her artistry. Rihanna comes out of left field with the Prince -inspired "Kiss It Better," the album's second single, which sees the superstar falling back on addictive sex that "feels like crack" to justify a destructive relationship. "Same Ol' Mistakes" is a cover of psychedelic rock band Tame Impala 's "New Person, Same Old Mistakes" — her first time remaking another artist's song for her own album since "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" on Music of the Sun . The Western-themed "Desperado" lends itself particularly well to covers by country artists, while the Dido -sampling "Never Ending" conveys the uncertainty she feels about entering a new relationship.

Elsewhere on ANTI , Rihanna drunk dials an ex ("Higher"), compares smoking weed to her lover ("James Joint"), and chastises a guy for getting emotionally attached after their fling ("Needed Me"). The latter song contains one of Rihanna's most empowering lyrics: "Didn't they tell you that I was a savage?/ F— ya white horse and ya carriage," she asserts in the pre-chorus.

Her voice sounds stronger than ever on "Love on the Brain," a doo-wop ballad resembling Etta James . But Rihanna makes it her own thanks to the bluntness of lines like "It beats me black and blue but it f— me so good."

The deep cuts on ANTI aren't merely fillers, and even rival some of the album's biggest hits. For instance, "Sex with Me" is featured on the deluxe edition as a bonus track, but managed to crack the Hot 100 at No. 83 and reach No. 8 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. Furthermore, the deluxe edition consists of 16 tracks, half of which topped the Dance Club Songs chart — smashing the record (previously held by Katy Perry 's Teenage Dream ) for the most No. 1s from a single album.

Accolades aside, ANTI is proof that magic happens when an artist of Rihanna's caliber follows their own instincts in pursuit of creating a body of work — one that can outlast them and continue to inspire generations to come.

Ever since ANTI , Rihanna's devoted fanbase has been begging for a new album, with Rih playfully trolling them with responses like "I lost it" and Instagram captions that read, "Me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it."

Her much-awaited return to music came at the tail end of 2022. The hitmaker twice contributed to the GRAMMY-nominated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack: "Born Again" and "Lift Me Up," the latter of which helped Rihanna score her first Oscar and Golden Globe nominations in 2022 and 2023, respectively. With the glorious "Lift Me Up," she found herself in the top 10 for the first time since 2017's "Wild Thoughts."

While the world is still anticipating her ninth studio album, Rihanna — now a mom of two boys — continues to make her own rules and move at her own pace. But as she's proven time and time again, it's always worth the wait.

The 66th GRAMMY Awards were full of memorable moments and incredible performances. Relive Music's Biggest Night with performance videos from Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Gaby Moreno & David Aguilar, and more.

The 2024 GRAMMYs were marked by record-breaking wins, moving speeches and viral moments both on- and offstage. But what truly tied together Music's Biggest Night — beyond artistic excellence — was its slate of stunning and emotional performances.

From Dua Lipa 's opening act and new song, to Joni Mitchell 's first-ever performance on the GRAMMY stage and the tearjerking-yet-thrilling tribute to lost icons, the 66th GRAMMY Awards were a showcase of the best of the business.

Press play on the videos below and relive the most exciting performances from the 66th GRAMMY Awards

Dua Lipa opened the 66th GRAMMY Awards with a medley of the first two singles from her upcoming album. Tracks " Houdini" and "Training Season" are the first two singles off Dua Lipa’s forthcoming third studio record, which follows her GRAMMY-winning 2020 LP   Future Nostalgia . The 2024 GRAMMYs were a sneak peek of "Training Season," as the track officially arrives Feb. 15.

In a full-circle moment, Luke Combs   perform his GRAMMY-nominated cover of " Fast Car " — with a suprise appearance from Tracy Chapman . "Fast Car" earned Chapman a GRAMMY for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1989, when she took home the trophy. On the GRAMMY stage, the otherwise reclusive Chapman beamed as she strummed an acoustic guitar and duetted with Combs . "Tracy is such an icon and, I mean, one of the best songwriters that I think any of us will ever be around to see, "   Combs said in the video introducing his performance.

Miley Cyrus   had only performed "Flowers" twice before taking the GRAMMY-winning song to stage on Music’s Biggest Night. And while the hit track off   Endless Summer Vacation was sure to be a showstopper, Cyrus’ performance was made even more special by winning her first GRAMMY moments before. After  eight nominations and many years in the industry, the singer’s exclamations of excitment were felt by everyone watching.

After winning the GRAMMY Award for Best Song Written For Visual Media at the Premiere Ceremony, Billie Eilish  and brother   FINNEAS   performed the existential pop ballad from Barbie on the GRAMMY stage. "What Was I Made For?" would go on to win Song Of The Year, showing the world that Eilish certainly knows what she was made for.

Eighty-year-old icon ad 2022 MusiCares Person Of The Year Joni Mitchell performed for the first time at the GRAMMY Awrds — and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Seated in an elegant chair and surrounded by chandeliers, Mitchell offered an emotional performance of her 1969 hit "Both Sides Now." The legened was backed by Brandi Carlile , Allison Russell , Sistastrings, Lucius, Jacob Collier , and Blake Mills; earlier in the day, "Both Sides" took home the golden gramophone for Best Folk Album.

SZA went into the 2024 GRAMMYs as the most-nominated artist and took home awards for   Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best R&B Song. She then gave back to the audience, performing the GRAMMY-winning "Snooze," clad in a leather duster and wide-brimmed hat.

Olivia Rodrigo  may not have taken home a golden gramophone, but she still left her all on the GRAMMYs stage. Donning an appropriately hued dress and just a dash of "blood" on her face, Rodrigo performed "vampire" as red liquid seeped from the walls behind her.

Billy Joel performed twice at the 66th GRAMMY Awards, treating audiences to one familiar tune and one brand-new track. Joel shared his newest offering, "Turn the Lights Back On," just before Album Of The Year was announced. His first release since 2007, "Turn the Lights Back On" marked his first time playing on the GRAMMYs stage in more than 20 years.

Burna Boy   brought a piece of his homeland to the GRAMMYs, dancing among throngs of colorfully-dressed performers and equally colorful buildings. The Nigerian Afrobeats star performed "On Form," "City Boys" and "Sitting On Top Of The World," iwth special appearances by   Brandy   and   21 Savage .

U2   took the GRAMMY audience on a quick trip to Las Vegas, performing "Atomic City" live from the Sphere. The swirling, psychedelic and high-tech performance was the first live broadcast from Sin City venue, which the 22-time GRAMMY winners are currently doing a residency.

During the moving In Memoriam segment of the 2024 GRAMMYs,  Eurythmics singer  Annie Lennox  was joined by  Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman to  pay tribute to Sinead O'Connor . Together, they offered an emotional cover of the late Irish pioneer's "Nothing Compares 2 U."

Further honoring the lives of incredible individuals that the music world lost in 2023, Fantasia Barrino made Tina Turner proud with a high-energy performance of "Proud Mary." The performance and tribute were introduced by Oprah Winfrey, who called Turner "a towering figure. She is our forever goddess of rock and roll who inspired millions, a moving symbol of grace and grit, soul and power…And as those big wheels of time keep on turnin’, Tina’s voice continues to speak to all of us."

Continuing the In Memoriam tribute,  Global Impact Award honoree Lenny Kravitz   paid respect to   Clarence Avant as the "Godfather of Black Music"   with a tribute that included a performance of "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Lean on Me" by Album Of The Year nominee   Jon Batiste .

During the Premiere Ceremony, Gaby Moreno & El David Aguilar performed a harmonious and haunting “Luna de Xelaju.” Their take on the popular Guatemalan waltz composed by Paco Pérez was set against a video of falling rose petals, highlighting the romanticism of the duo’s voices.

The Premiere Ceremony kicked off the 2024 GRAMMYs with an exciting  performance from   Pentatonix ,   Jordin Sparks ,   Larkin Poe,   J. Ivy , and   Sheila E. , who welcomed audiences to a day-long celebration of musical excellence.

Inside The Recording Academy And Clive Davis' 2024 Pre-GRAMMY Gala: New Artists, Lasting Legends and Iconic Performances

Ahead of the 2024 GRAMMYs, stars including Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Megan Thee Stallion, Chloe x Halle, and more flocked to the annual Pre-GRAMMY Gala co-presented by the Recording Academy.

Who better than Tom Hanks to say it best?

" Clive Davis has provided us with the soundtrack of our lives, our emotions and our inspirations," the legendary actor said of the night's premiement host; the legendary music executive, passionate advocate for the power of song and noted discoverer of artists.

"Music is the food [of the soul], give us excess of it," said Hanks in his passionate opening soliloquy packed with approbation. "And tonight is a night of excess."

It's the stuff of legend, a topic of lore and an evening that regularly rockets itself in the pages of music history. For nearly 50 years, the annual Pre-GRAMMY Gala, presented by the Recording Academy and Clive Davis, has been a star-making opportunity for the music industry to celebrate their past monumental year, highlighting both veteran acts and tomorrow's superstars. For the 2024 Pre-GRAMMY Gala — sponsored by Hilton, IBM and Mastercard and held on a rainy night at its regular home at the equally iconic Beverly Hilton Hotel the night before the 2024 GRAMMYs , its usual slot on the calendar — the grand master of music's party continued to provide a beacon of light for jaw-dropping performances and starry shoulder-rubbing.

But before the party is the cocktail hour; a curious affair where music past and present collides. In one corner finds Producer Of The Year nominee Dan Nigro , the pop whisperer behind acclaimed acts ranging from Chappell Roan , Conan Gray and the multiple-Grammy nominated Olivia Rodrigo . A couple people away was Frankie Valli , last year's Pre-GRAMMY Gala opener who is currently in the midst of what he bills as a farewell tour. Looking around the room, the star power is abundant: Dianne Warren , the aforementioned Hanks with wife Rita Wilson, MusiCares' 2024 Person Of The Year Jon Bon Jovi , longtime Gala guest Nancy Pelosi alongside husband Paul.

Just beyond the cocktail hour lies the red carpet, which boasts a head-snapping array of personalities. Megan Thee Stallion strutted in flaunting a gold-colored dress, while last year's Best New Artist winner Samara Joy sauntered in an equally dazzling gown. The list of guests includes an eclectic array of who's who in music: pop star Ellie Goulding , the dance-pop-country artist and producer Diplo , country-pop icon Shania Twain, recent Black Music Collective honorees Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz , the producer David Foster with wife Katherine McPhee , eventual three-time GRAMMY winners Julien Baker , Lucy Dacus , and Phoebe Bridgers (the trio otherwise known as Boygenius ), and the following night's GRAMMY opener Dua Lipa , among countless others.

As the esteemed guests (which also included Kenneth "Babyface" Edmunds ,  Janelle Monáe, Troye Sivan , Motown founder Berry Gordy , Smokey Robinson , the members of Earth, Wind and Fire and Charli XCX ) settled into their seats in a ballroom with a stage outfitted with the bash's signature twinkle lights sparkling on the stage, a countdown on the monitors appeared. 3, 2, 1…

"We're going to play a game of word association," said Hanks, who was bestowed the honor of introducing Davis and to mark the occasion, he managed to recite a massive list of artists Davis had a hand or hands in making superstars, from Janis Joplin to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen , right up to Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys . "The only reason why Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky weren't mentioned is because they all died before Clive Davis had a chance to introduce them," he joked.

"I've gotta tell you, the emotions run high," said Davis. "I look out among you and I see so many familiar faces. The whole thing began as long ago as 1976 and I really have to pinch myself that it's going so, so strong. I'm happy to say that music is alive and well."

Tennis great Serena Williams introduced the night's opening act, Green Day . "In 2022, Clive Davis and I were honored together when we were inducted into the National Portrait Gallery," she recalled. "I said to him, 'You've got to remember to invite me to your gala. I'm so thrilled to be back here to introduce my favorite band. To know me is to know my love for them."

The punk gods are currently making a comeback with their 14th studio album, Saviors , and celebrating the 30th anniversary of their breakout album Dookie and 20th anniversary of their massively successful LP American Idiot . The group honored both anniversaries with a song from each, "American Idiot" and "Basket Case."

In years past, the night's performers ranged a wide gamut; but to prove Davis's point and regenerative effects of the industry, this year a large portion of the roster of surprise performers were plucked from the 2024's crop of Best New Artist nominees . There was the singer-songwriter Noah Kahan , who busted out a rousing rendition of his own breakout "Stick Season," while Ice Spice hit the stage to deliver her 2023 solo hit, "Deli."

Rising country star Jelly Roll was also bequeathed a coveted slot, proclaiming his excitement by saying he had "only read about the party in books and magazines." With that, he delivered rousing versions of his candid single "Need a Favor" backed by a choir, as well as his equally affecting "Save Me," on which he brought out duet partner and eventual GRAMMY winner Lainey Wilson .

In fact, it was Wilson who provided one of the most surprising moments of the night when she appeared to perform a special version of Barbie 's "I'm Just Ken" accompanied by songwriter Andrew Watt on piano and Mark Ronson on guitar. Of course, Davis was the architect of the moment, an idea he said came to him last week; Ronson suggested Wilson after the song's original performer, the actor Ryan Gosling, was unavailable.

"To look astound and to see some of the greatest musicians and record-makers, it's really an honor to be here," Ronson said. "This is a song we wrote for the movie Barbie about the beauty of being the runner-up sometimes, which is a lesson I know very well," he said to laughter. "It's pretty cool to be second sometimes."

2024 GRAMMYs: Explore More & Meet The Nominees

Fresh off his starring role on Broadway's Sweeney Todd , Josh Groban delivered a subtle tribute to the legend behind the Broadway musical by performing "Children Will Listen," before paying tribute to Davis himself with a gospel-tinged performance of Simon and Garfunkel 's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which Davis had a hand in releasing. Joining him was another Best New Artist nominee, The War and Treaty frontman Michael Trotter Jr., and the pair's joint vocal power brought the audience to its feet.

Musical whiplash ensued with additional performances courtesy Maluma and Isley Brothers , the latter of which performed their instantly-recognizable "Shout" as a tribute to Chairman and CEO of SONY Music Publishing Jon Platt , the evening's Icon honoree. An award which in years past has gone to heavyweights including David Geffen, Mo Ostin, Ahmet Ertgun and Jerry Moss to name a few, Platt was touched by the honor and delivered a 40-minute speech chock full of stories and reflections. Not even a beeping fire alarm, which at one point blared and flashed through his speech, tripped up Platt.

"It's funny because Harvey called me and I thought he needed help with something," said Platt, recalling the moment the Recording Academy's CEO Harvey Mason jr. informed him of the honor. "But he said I was selected as this year's industry icon and I was like, 'Wow, man.'"

Noting he needed convincing to accept the honor ("I'm [just] seeing so many other people doing great things," he relented), Platt's contributions to music, from his work with everyone from Isley Brothers to Beyonce to Jay-Z, and even Oliva Rodrigo, makes him both a genre and decade-spanning force.

"You'll see a consistent thing with me is that I'm a music nerd-fanboy," Platt said, noting how a kind word from the composer Gerald Busby made this evening a full circle moment for him. "[One day in 1998] I saw him and we were making small talk and he said, 'Someone was asking me who I see in the industry today that can achieve the things that I can achieve. I told them that Big Jon's gonna run the whole thing one day.' For someone to share the belief they have in you is incredibly powerful. From that day, I changed the course of my focus. Everything had a purpose after that."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Recording Academy / GRAMMYs (@recordingacademy)

Another one of the artists Platt fostered performed in his honor as well: Public Enemy . "We're here for you and here for all of our heroes and hero-ettes," Chuck D declared before the group dove into an energetic medley of "Can't Truss It," "Bring the Noise" and "Fight the Power."

It wouldn't be a Clive Davis bash without one final surprise. As 1 a.m. neared, Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick hit the stage, with the former belting out a passionate version of "(The Way We Were) Memories" and the duo joining together for Warwick's endearing staple, "That's What Friends are For" alongside Andra Day.

But from the electrified crowd, guest Stevie Wonder just couldn't help himself, getting up on stage to assist on harmonica. "This has been such a wonderful blessing to meet all of these people in my life; to meet Dionne, to meet Gladys," Wonder said, cueing up an unrehearsed and on-the-fly version of "What the World Needs Now Is Love" with the entire group.

"I know this is what we need in the world," he continued. "There are many people that for so many years have been dividing people, not understanding the purpose that God has given us to come together."

It was a moving way to wrap up the night — and a fitting one at that, bringing together stars young and old to offer an inspiring message, and remind just how powerful music can be.

The biggest gigs and tours to come in 2024

12 February 2024, 17:02

Heading out on tour in '24: Kasabian, The Last Dinner Party and The Libertines

Listen to this article

2024 is already looking like it's going to be a HUGE year for live music... here are just some of the highlights, as picked by Radio X, from Kasabian and The Libertines to The Last Dinner Party and more...

The gig calendar for 2024 is already looking pretty full - and more dates are announced on a daily basis!

The homecoming show seems to be a theme for '24, with Richard Ashcroft and The Lathums playing Wigan, Blossoms playing Wythenshawe Park and Kasabian headlining a massive show in their old manor of Leicester.

Meanwhile, major festivals like Glastonbury and Reading/Leeds are expected to showcase line-ups featuring a mix of iconic legends and cutting-edge talents.

In the closing stretch of its European tour, the NSO takes flight

The national symphony orchestra completed its first european tour since 2016 – and audiences rose to the occasion.

music tours in europe 2024

W hen I arrived in Cologne last week to meet up with the National Symphony Orchestra on the last leg of its European tour, everyone seemed primed for an intermission.

Eight days and seven shows into its first multi-city European tour since 2016 , the NSO had already made stops in Barcelona, Zaragoza and Madrid (for two performances) in Spain and in Berlin, Nuremberg and Frankfurt in Germany. There hadn’t been a proper day off (i.e., without a show, travel or both) since back in Barcelona — an early pause strategically positioned to mitigate collective jet lag, but now as distant as a forgotten dream.

On the other side of this night’s appearance at the Kölner Philharmonie , a much-needed breather awaited. And with just three concerts left on the itinerary — in Cologne, Milan and Hamburg — the vibe on the shuttle bus from the hotel to the hall was a medley of anticipation, determination and muted sneezes. The NSO may be a powerful orchestra, but its musicians aren’t immune to germs.

Orchestras, it’s worth remembering, are made of people.

It’s so easy to think of orchestras as institutions — each one a local congress of instrumental posts passed down through generations of stewards whose ranks remain intentionally blurred, our focus fixed instead on the particular form of an era’s respective maestro. (This institutional quality is especially pronounced in cities such as Cologne, where orchestras — the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, for example — receive substantial public funding.)

In reality, an orchestra is about three buses worth of co-workers; the concert hall is a conspicuously spacious office; and the tour is nothing if not a daily grind — albeit a dazzling one.

There are 99 musicians total along for the ride — 81 of them permanent NSO players, the others substitutes under various degrees of contract. By day, the musicians speed-walk a little sightseeing on the way to hurried meals. They sneak naps or solo rehearsals into the hotel’s housekeeping hours. Many have spouses and kids and their respective sniffles in tow. Orchestras are just like us: They get jet-lagged and hangry and sick and tired. They lose their luggage and accidentally pack expired EpiPens. (Okay, that last one was just me.)

Sharp. Witty. Thoughtful. Sign up for the Style Memo newsletter.

All of which makes the NSO’s sudden convergence into solid, familiar musical form onstage after stage in city after city feel something like a minor miracle. (Much like when my luggage rolled up the next day.) At each of the three concerts I attended in Europe, the NSO came off as one of the hardest-working orchestras in the biz, without ever making the music sound like a job.

T he Kölner Philharmonie , part of the sizable campus of the Museum Ludwig, serves as the Gürzenich’s and the WDR’s subterranean home, its cavernous hall hidden below the unassuming brick expanse of the Heinrich-Böll-Platz. Whenever a concert is underway below, guards dot the plaza’s perimeter, waving pedestrians away from crossing, as the click of high heels and the rumble of wheelie luggage register quite clearly in the hall’s otherwise pristine acoustics.

The hardwood of the hall itself seems to swirl around its stage, a system of blue beams girding a circular canopy of bright lights and acoustic spires. The Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) looms large over this place, and the Philharmonie responds respectfully to the Dom’s unfathomable scale with an uncanny intimacy. Listeners are encircled in rich and richly present sound — and, woe to the jet-lagged, tucked into dangerously comfortable seats (designed by the German automaker Recaro).

The orchestra opened with three movements (the second, third and fourth) from Alban Berg’s six-part “Lyric Suite,” arranged for string orchestra by Berg in 1928 and performed by the NSO early last month at the Kennedy Center.

Whether it was the boxy hall itself or maestro Gianandrea Noseda’s discretion, in D.C. the suite’s sharper edges felt slightly dulled. But in Cologne, the unique penmanship of Berg’s dissonant love letter (to the similarly married Hanna Fuchs-Robettin) felt lush and extra inky. Ditto the insectile intensity of the “Allegro misterioso — Trio estatico,” which felt at times like a charged vapor. The closing “Adagio appassionato” highlighted Berg’s interest in harmonic width and Noseda’s search for unexpected depth.

Violinist Hilary Hahn took the stage to a warm embrace of applause to perform Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Violin Concerto” (also previewed in D.C. in early February ). Noseda and Hahn have enjoyed what he calls a “fruitful cooperation” over the years, with the 44-year-old violinist making frequent appearances with the NSO, and demonstrating a beguiling alignment with the maestro’s detail-oriented priorities.

As it was in D.C., Hahn’s handling of the concerto, premiered in 1947 by Jascha Heifetz, swung from agile and light to aggressive and crunchy. She matched its cinematic sweep with the aplomb of an action hero, her cadenzas flinging us into Korngold’s plush cushions of melodrama. Hahn took evident pleasure in its racing finale (“Allegro assai vivace”), especially its leaping closing minutes — made witty and piquant atop stately statements of horn.

Germans aren’t known for handing out standing ovations, but Hahn earned hers, as well as two encores. First she offered Carlos Simon’s “Shards of Light” a 3½-minute soliloquy for violin, its ivy climb ornamented here and there with pizzicato petals. Hahn’s way of digging into its fluttering melody felt hard-wired — Simon started sketching it for her two years ago and returned to complete it two weeks before the tour.

“Not too many composers are courageous enough to compose like that for solo violin,” Hahn told me later backstage. And she’s correct: “Shards” surrenders the temptation toward virtuosity for something closer to pure trust, and Hahn makes good on her end of the bargain. Simon was on hand to receive a warm, welcoming ovation.

She followed Simon’s sketch with the Loure movement from Bach’s third violin partita , played with what I could only describe as exquisite privacy — a confided secret that genuinely felt like something we hadn’t already known.

The program ended, as the next two would, with Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 5,” a work that has been in the orchestra’s suitcase for more than 80 years. The NSO has performed the Fifth some 92 times outside D.C. — on tours, residencies and one-offs stretching back through the tenures of Christoph Eschenbach, Mstislav Rostropovich, Howard Mitchell and Hans Kindler — raising the question of whether it’s a calling card or a stubborn habit.

In my ears, the symphony’s teeth only got sharper as the week wore on and the orchestra forged ahead — though the Philharmonie space did lend particular sparkle and peculiar shine to its timbral variety show.

And from the increasingly illegible lines in my notebook, you can tell I was starting to fade. (Critics are people, too!) If it hadn’t been for the evening’s second standing ovation and a full orchestra encore of Simon’s spiritually inspired “Meditations on Grace,” I might not have rallied for the frosty rounds of Kölsch getting slung backstage by the staff. Prost! (And, more important, gute nacht.)

A fter a day of long naps, longer walks, big servings of doner kebab and some satellite outings to nearby Bonn (where Beethoven was born), a visibly rejuvenated but still audibly sniffly NSO filed onto four buses and one charter flight to Milan.

The evening performance at Teatro alla Scala would mark a historic moment for the NSO, who had performed in Milan only once before, under Rostropovich at the Piazza del Duomo. It would also mark a homecoming for Noseda, who originally hails from Milan and whose family was well-represented in the hall’s plush red rows and boxes.

The Style section

Thus, the instantly recognizable — dare I say iconic? — La Scala poster elegantly billing the orchestra’s appearance was ogled over and posed with by musicians like the surreal artifact that it already was. Elsewhere backstage, ships from the set of an ongoing production of “Simon Boccanegra” were temporarily ported on pallets as NSO crews wheeled in crates for a last-minute load-in. And all around, musicians (and nosy writers) explored the labyrinthine hall, its seemingly endless coil of stacked tiers and closed doors, its sudden outbursts of opulence hiding around the bend of every curving corridor.

The word on the bus was that La Scala was known to be a dry hall — good for opera, iffy for orchestras. But in a short rehearsal as well as an hour or so later, as bodies filled every seat in the place, all the way up to the nosebleeds, that anticipated dryness translated into a crispness and clarity that made the orchestra sound right at home.

A few weeks ago, when parts of this program were played in D.C. , I’d mentioned how thoughtful a bookend Simon’s concerto for orchestra — titled “Wake Up!” — made for the Shostakovich, suggesting the composers shared “an ability to say two things at once, thread angst through merriment, smiles through tears.”

But in Milan, another bothness between the two composers emerged. As much contrast as there is between Simon’s endearingly genuine voice and Shostakovich’s wry sarcasm, an affinity exists between their adventurous orchestration — bristling percussion, slingshot strings, vertiginous climaxes and crashes. Simon’s concerto was especially vivid in Milan, its vaguely phonetic two-note salvo sounding an alarm that scarcely relented. At La Scala, the wit and sensitivity of each composer — separated by a century — felt vital and alive in conversation.

Equally supercharged was the evening’s centerpiece, Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 4” performed by the Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho (one of three dates featuring him on this tour).

Though Cho channels nearly all his showmanship through his hands, he’s a fascinating pianist to watch — workmanlike and intense, but given to breezy, poetic explorations of the concerto’s most well-trodden stretches. He brought a jeweled softness to the central “Andante con moto” and galloping vigor to the closing “Rondo (Vivace),” beckoning the orchestra to match his sprightly energy. It was Beethoven with fresh batteries. The pianist reappeared for a soft-spoken encore of the slow movement of Beethoven’s eighth piano sonata — i.e., the “Pathétique.”

A post-show reception for Noseda and his wife, Lucia, in one of La Scala’s glimmering function halls made clear what a family affair this truly was. Among the attendees were (per my probably incomplete tally) his parents, his brother, his sister-in-law, one of his four nephews, a cousin, a godson, and a small, smiling crowd of friends, colleagues, surprise guests and well-wishers.

And those who didn’t know Noseda personally confirmed to me the rarity of such a warm welcome, let alone such a prolonged ovation. For a Monday night in Milan, it was somewhere between a big deal and a small triumph.

The next day, just before our initial descent into Hamburg, Noseda hopped on the plane’s public announcement system to thank his players for their tenacity, the staff and the crew for their hard work, and the kids for their good behavior. He wished them a strong show and safe travels home, and looked forward to their reunion in D.C. at the end of May — after Noseda leads two full cycles of Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” tetralogy at Opernhaus Zurich (with a little “ Carmen ” thrown in for good measure). Conspicuously, he forgot to remind us to bring our seats upright and stow our tray tables.

From the artfully bulging upper windows of the towering Elbphilharmonie complex, the city of Hamburg stretches out in seeming miniature — a vast industrial expanse of cranes, drawbridges and the purple breath of distant smokestacks.

Meanwhile, seven minutes away on foot, a similar view awaited orchestra members who visited the world-famous Miniatur Wunderland , where the world’s largest model train makes dozens of stops in a tiny Hamburg, complete with trains, planes, automobiles and tiny Hamburgers going about their business.

It seemed appropriate on this last day of tour to survey the whole endeavor from on high, however one managed to do it.

And the Elbphilharmonie hall itself, opened to great acclaim in 2017, maintained this sense of epic scale. It’s an exquisite space, its tiers curling around as though carved by small rivers, its walls crannied with little acoustic nooks and pockets, encouraging a cool, full, vibrant sound — though not without its issues. In rehearsals of the Shostakovich, for instance, the basses were instructed to slice a bit harder and bow a bit more quickly — a move that almost surmounted the hall’s comparably stingy lows.

This final program of the tour was a repeat of the one heard at La Scala, but the music felt (once again) transformed by the space and recharged by the circumstances. The performance was not so much a sprint to the finish line as a final, forceful push into every detail and color.

And perhaps this is just a side effect of traveling with the group for six days, observing the mixing and mingling of entire sections usually separated by precise design, and eavesdropping on the natural interest and curiosity the players have in one another, but in Hamburg most of all, there was something personal at work among the personnel.

This was especially so in the Shostakovich, which truly found its moment in Hamburg: from the dialogue of Abel Pereira’s horn and Aaron Goldman’s lithe flute in its first movement; to the barbed sweetness of concertmaster Nurit Bar-Josef’s solos in the second; to the silken lines of Lin Ma’s clarinet in the third; to the 256 rapid-fire piccolo notes of the finale (the ones I overheard Carole Bean fine-tuning in her hotel room the day before).

If the Fifth might fairly be seen as historically overplayed by this orchestra, as a tour-closer in Hamburg it felt deeply understood, and at times, freshly rediscovered — its contours crisp and clean, its humor fully indulged, its multitudes gleefully released.

Certainly, a tour like this is intended to introduce the National Symphony Orchestra to a world of new listeners, to stake a claim in the larger musical landscape, to declare itself present. But the true magic of joining this trip, even for just a few days, was watching the NSO attain a fresh perspective on itself — an overhead view, if you will.

“I always respected them, but I have to say I’ve really started to love them,” Noseda tells me over a quick bite on the final day. “Because I see them not only onstage as artists — I see them traveling together. I see them moving in groups. I see them searching for the restaurants. I see them being people.”

When : August 8-11, 2024

Where :  Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Untold Festival is the largest  electronic music festival held in Romania!

“There’s never been a more magical land in the history of mankind, such as Transylvania. Secluded for centuries, wrapped in myths and legends, but never fully disclosing itself, cocooning fantastic beings that only the moon might know the name of. A universe dormant for the tribe of men but alive as the wind through the leaves. That only few moons ago decided to reveal itself to the rest of the world, when a mighty wizard, traveling through space and time, opened the Transylvanian gates for the first time, on a summer eve, releasing its magic for four days and nights, to all those traveling the land, from afar. That is when the UNTOLD legend began, bound to reappear every year, in the same night, each time revealing more of its fantastical universe.

A world of wondrous diversity, under the ruling of the Wizard and it’s loyal servant, a legendary dragon, summoned from the stars and bearer of Truth. A realm where oracles and time weavers are changing the laws of Time, where druids and part animal-part plant beings are protecting the forests. And Elderly teachers and their alchemist students are continuously transforming elements. Where ancient celestial beings, inventors and architects, are searching for knowledge beyond stars. And nature priests, surrounded by nymphs, mythical chimeras and nature spirits live in a perpetual connection. And above all, pledging themselves to the mighty wizard, a tribe of men-wolves, warriors of regal kin, offering their protection to the land beyond the forest.

Each year, for those four days and nights, the Transylvanian land, enriched with more and more magic, opens its magical gates to all those thirsty to know its secrets. Welcome to UNTOLD!”

“So here we are still after all those years with the same passion and energy. It has been a long, crazy, emotional ride with unique encounters and endless memories. The first 25 years have led us to various cities, countries and continents. From 1994 onwards, our journey has been driven by our true love for electronic music.  We will once again create the space known as Time Warp. Complete with it’s various floors, all of which will have their own special energy circling around, grabbing you to the dancefloor. Each with its own distinctive synthesis of sound and visuals, to enhance your Time Warp experience.”

Time Warp is a must tick on the techno bucket list, famed for its unparalleled attention to design and sound – festival goers will be immersed in the audiovisual experience Time Warp has to offer. A long-standing player in the techno scene!  18,000 ravers from all over the world will be on board to celebrating 25 years of making people dance – make sure you are one of them.

One of my personal favorite festivals in Europe!!

“Balaton Sound takes place at the idyllic Lake Balaton, in Hungary. The sibling festival to Sziget is now in its second decade, and has put Hungary on the map in regards to being a key destination for the premium summer beach festival experience.

With impressive lineups featuring the world’s best in EDM, house, and hip-hop artists over nine stages, what better soundtrack do you need when you can spend your days either dancing on boat parties, chilling out at the nearby food and drink spots, or sunbathing lakeside and truly making the most of the blissful weather.  People flock to Balaton Sound from all corners of Europe, and when the party is this great, why wouldn’t you?”

Boom is powered by a mix of off-grid photovoltaic panels, diesel generators and a 100kW waste vegetable oil (WVO) generator, which is extremely rare in the festival industry!   Boom has won the Greener Festival Excellence Award four times (2008, 2010, 2012 & 2014), and in 2010 won the YOUROPE Green & Clean Festival of the Year; which led to Boom becoming a participant in the United Nations Music & Environment Initiative.”

Where : Polkovnik Serafimovo, Bulgaria

http://www.meadowsinthemountains.com

“Meadows In The Mountains has become one of the world’s most unique music festivals, taking place in Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains. This truly inspiring music and arts adventure is all about breaking free from the shackles of urban life and escaping into the wilderness and tranquility of this local Bulgarian community, with whom most festival-goers stay with.

Its lineup is defiantly underground and free-spirited, shunning commercial artists to showcase those who share their values of social harmony and self-expression, making it a festival of exploration for those lucky enough to make the trip up into the mountains. And believe us, there is no better sight than watching the sunrise over a mountain.”

What is the biggest music festival in Europe?

There’s an endless array of epic festivals across Europe, but the biggest one by attendance size is the famous Tomorrowland. Its return after lockdowns saw almost 600, 000 people in attendance, and the rave only continues to grow in size each year, hosting some of the biggest musical acts in the world.

What is the biggest country music festival in Europe?

The biggest country music festival in Europe is currently C2C (Country To Country), which is held in a variety of cities and plays host to some of the biggest names in country music in the world. It is held in various cities across the UK and Europe, including Berlin, London, Dublin and Glasgow.

Which country in Europe has the most music festivals?

While countries like Germany and France have an amazing number of festivals for every style of musical taste, it’s the UK that has the most music festivals per year. With an average of around 30 official UK music festivals each year, you’ll be hard pressed not to find an event that isn’t perfect for you!

Best Europe Festivals 2020

Thanks for reading about these epic European music festivals and raves!

Share this article with your europe festival squad .

How embarrassing that I haven’t been to one of them as a European ;)

It’s only a little bit embarassing! Lol. But there’s so many amazing ones to choose from! You should definitely go to one this summer. I’m dying to go back to Europe for the summer just to go to a few of them.

Glad to see Roskilde Festival on the list – even though I’ve never been to it (I’m a bad Dane). Don’t think I’d survive a day at a festival :-D

Haha yeah festivals can get pretty crazy. Always takes me some time to recover! You should definitely check it out though! Roskilde looks incredible!

where is Sunwaves ?

There’s so many festivals in Europe I couldn’t include them all, but Sunwaves looks incredible! Might have to update this list to include it!

Oh my, number 1 and 16 look to have insane lights. I would love to stop by those at least, for the light show should be amazing! Then there is number 23. Is that in the picture, or the location anyway? Because a giant waterfall light show at a music festival sounds like it would beat all the others here.

I’m all about the light shows!! : )

I’m definitely going to try my best! If only festivals were’t so expensive!

AMAZING, just AMAZING! that’s exactly what I was looking for :)

Don’t you suggest nothing great in Portugal? I’m moving to Lisbon :)

Thanks so much Renan! Glad ya like this list! For Portugal, check out Primavera Sound, and BOOM festival! Enjoy! Portugal sounds amazing!

A few of those are on our list too. Which one or ones to go too!!? Too many great lineups, too many great locations

Yeah researching festivals in Europe, and I just kept finding more and more. Nice post you got there. :-)

Cool article!! I love festivals and I’ve been in few of them, but the 17 is FIB (Festival Internacional de Benicassim), not Bennacassim!! haha that’s my hometown and I’ve worked there few years so I had to tell you.. :P Definetely Sónar is the best electronic music festival in Spain, can’t wait to go back there when I finish my year in Australia :D

Yess SONAR is amazing! Been two years now and dying to get back to Barcelona (my favorite city in the world). I’m based in Oz right now, and the festivals just don’t compare!

Cheers Samuel

I like the article, but I notice one mistake. Exit festival is not in Belgrade it’s in Novi Sad (on Petrovaradin fortress). :-)

we have in the netherlands paaspop festival

Another festival worth to be visited is Medusa Festival in Cullera (near Valencia, Spain), not so expensive actually! :)

Y need to come here to Ireland – we have a big main festival called Electric Picnic (3 days) – The crowd in this one is quite young. The second one that is 3 years old (organized by the same person that started Electric Picnic) is All Together now – a much smaller festival with an older public and last but not least we have Body and Soul – This is a small festival that started a few years back (Body and Soul is an area at Electric Picnic and due to the big popularity now has it own festival).

T I’m the park?

You should also check DAVA Festival ( https://davafestival.com/ ), a small & cozy techno festival in the heart of Transylvania with a unique location: a former glass factory. Take care!

2020 has ruined all small big happiness. I wanted to attend the music festivals in Europe but this pandemic has spoiled my plan. I hope in 2021 it happens. Cant wait.

In India, the festivities are greatly vibrant. Let it be the Hindu calendar or the English, the year starts and ends with tons of festivals, weddings and other such events are add ones. While power cuts are also very general in the country, which can ruin the enjoyment of the festival that you are celebrating. This is why people prefer to opt for UPS on rent for festival.

Obviously you haven’t been to the Open’er Festival, held annually in Gdynia, Poland. Time to join!

Your detailed descriptions, like the diverse musical spectrum at Sziget and the experimental vibe of Sónar, totally capture the essence of what makes these festivals stand out. And I totally agree with you on the importance of festivals like ADE and Awakenings in shaping the electronic music scene. It’s fascinating how each festival, from the beach vibes at NOS Alive to the historic Roskilde Festival, offers a unique experience that goes beyond music. Your guide is not just informative but a true reflection of the joy and diversity found in Europe’s music festival scene. Keep up the fantastic work; it’s a real treasure for festival lovers like me!

We organize a big tango festival in the beautiful city of Zabrze, if you want to have a great experience while in Poland. We invite dancers from all around the world to be part of it! More info at 6th Edition May Tango Festival 2024!
