August in Scandinavia: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

With mild weather and plenty of summer events to discover, the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Sweden, Norway , Finland , and Iceland are a great destination for travel in August. With more hours of daylight throughout the month and everything from outdoor events to tours and sightseeing adventures, you are sure to enjoy your trip to Scandinavia in Northern Europe.

Although the summer season is wonderful for travelers, it also means flights and hotels are a little more expensive; to easily avoid this, secure  budget travel  and accommodations in advance.

Scandinavia Weather in August

In August, Scandinavia has warm, pleasant weather with average daily temperatures easily reaching 70 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 23 degrees Celsius) in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.  Iceland is usually close to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius). Finland is on the cooler side as well. Most Scandinavian countries also receive rain about half the month, so you will likely run into a summer shower on your trip.

The average high and low temperatures in each country in the region vary a bit, so research the  weather in your Scandinavian destination  and nearby places you plan to travel before leaving on your trip.

What to Pack

Short sleeves are perfectly fine for summer trips in Scandinavia, but in case you hit bad weather, always carry a sweater, a cardigan, or a light jacket. Layering comfortable clothing is important to ensure you stay warm without getting too hot in the summer, but Iceland travelers will have to bring warmer clothing.

Weatherproof raincoats and windbreakers, regardless of the season, are always a good idea for Scandinavian tourists to bring along as well. Tough and comfortable shoes are essential for your vacation if you enjoy outdoor activities; otherwise, sneakers will be fine for city travel.

August Events in Scandinavia

No matter where you go or when in August you travel, there is sure to be a musical or theatrical performance, cultural celebration, or special event happening somewhere in the region. August is also Gay Pride Month in most of Scandinavia, so expect to see several celebrations across the region.

  • Karl-Oskar days: Each year for a few days in the summer, Växjö lights up with live music from around Sweden, plus additional entertainment and food.
  • The Malmö Festival : This week-long sustainable festival has been celebrating the art, music, food, and culture of Sweden's third-largest city since 1985.
  • The Way Out West Festival : The three-day music festival in Gothenburg, Sweden, typically features domestic and international rock, electronic, and hip-hop artists.
  • Stockholm Pride : The annual gay festival run by a nonprofit has been held in the capital of Sweden usually in late July and early August since 1998.
  • Etne Market Days : This outdoor village market in Sunnhordland, Norway, is open the first week of August and welcomes over 40,000 visitors, numerous exhibitors, and a full lineup of music and cultural performances.
  • Oslo Chamber Music Festival : Various venues in Oslo, Norway , host world-class chamber ensembles and soloists for special performances.
  • Oslo Jazz Festival : International jazz musicians gather each summer for a series of about 65 free and ticketed shows over several days at various venues around the city.
  • Reykjavik Marathon and Cultural Night :   This annual charity run takes place for one night and will be followed by a free public event celebrating the culture, music, food, and art of Iceland.
  • Reykjavik Pride : Since 1999, Iceland's premier LGBTQ Pride celebration has welcomed over 100,000 global guests to the country's capital for over a week each August.
  • Copenhagen Fashion Week : Multiple fashion shows, product launches, runway presentations, and special galleries will take over a portion of Copenhagen, Denmark for a few days.
  • Horsens Medieval Festival : Also known as the Middelalder Festival, this annual event takes place in Horsens, Denmark, for two days.
  • Aarhus Festival : A village festival that takes over the entire Denmark city with art, music, entertainment, and food for 10 days in late August and early September.
  • Copenhagen Pride Week : The largest annual human rights festival in Denmark takes place in its capital city.

August Travel Tips

  • Book your flights, hotels, and dinner reservations far in advance as these accommodations are likely to fill up quickly during the height of summer tourist season.
  • Bank holidays (national/public holidays) can affect your travel through business closures and more crowds. The only Scandinavian holiday this month is Commerce Day (Tradesmen's Day) in Iceland, which always falls on the first Monday in August.
  • Also in Iceland (as well as in Norway's Spitzbergen), August is the best time for travelers to experience one of  Scandinavia's coolest natural phenomena : the  Midnight Sun . This is a beautiful weather marvel that keeps the sun in the sky at night.
  • Just because it's cooler doesn't mean you're less prone to sunburn or dehydration while outside, so be sure to pack (or buy) plenty of sunscreen and keep drinking water throughout the day, especially if you're hiking or doing strenuous exercises.

Scenic Scandinavia and its Fjords (14 Days)

The itinerary was great with lots of time built in for solo exploration. I liked having an orientation to the towns before heading out on my own. Michael had a lot of knowledge to share about the places we saw. He is s great story teller making everything interesting. His personality is perfect for the job. He kept everyone on time in a very respectful manner which was much appreciated. I also enjoyed the local guides who were also a wealth of knowledge. The optional excursions were Good value for the most part. Our driver was awesome. Despite the challenging terrain I felt very safe and comfortable on the coach. He was always very pleasant.

Spectacular Scandinavia & its Fjords (Classic, 15 Days)

The experience to Scandinavia was exceptional and we highly recommend this tour. Even more so, we recommend that you try to book with Greg Colgin. He made the trip so much more enjoyable with his positive and upbeat demeaner each day and a true passion for taking care of everyone. Our group enjoyed him so much that we are considering a reunion tour with him on another Insight vacation.

A Taste of Scandinavia

Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.

Scandinavia Explorer Tour

Scandinavia Explorer

Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Although memories aren't. Thank you. What a charming almost fairy tale intro to Norway, Sweden, and Finland! Tom and Sherry Miller from U.S.A.

Scenic circle of scandinavia, june 2019, our experience with nv has been a joy.

Our experience with NV has been a joy. Alda has been terrific and very accommodating to our needs and we could not have asked for more from you or her.

Nordic odyssey, august 2018, i have already recommended nordic visitor to others..

I have already recommended Nordic visitor to others. The price was very reasonable, and accommodations top notch. As we did the self guided tour the side tours available that we took were top rate. We enjoyed being able to spend time exploring on our own and not being bound by a full schedule. The transportation was wonderful. Our guide, Alda, was very helpful.

Lisa, United States

A tale of four cities, may 2018, wonderful experience with nordic visitor..

The information packet provided at the beginning was very helpful particularly the maps being marked up

The golden triangle of scandinavia, august 2016, completely lived up to our expectations.

Irja was wonderful! She put our trip together perfectly and our entire visit from one country to the next was seamless. It could not have been any easier or well coordinated. My emails were responded to promptly and all my questions were answered thoroughly and with patience. I usually plan all my trips myself but it was so nice to let Irja know what I wanted and let her do all the tedious planning and booking. It was really amazing and our trip completely lived up to our expectations! I feel like a spoiled traveler now because Irja took a lot of the travel planning headache away from me and she did a really great job. We really appreciated the complimentary upgrades too!

Alan, United States

The golden triangle of scandinavia, april 2016, high degree of professionalism.

Probably the most important service I received was Cecilia's prompt answers to all my questions. My requests were handled expeditiously. As for the accommodations, they ranged from very good to excellent. Of particular note is the fact that Cecilia had to react quickly to hotel employees' strike at one of the hotels. She quickly found arranged for me to stay at another hotel, which was most impressive (both her ability to improvise and the quality of the hotel). She was also quite helpful in recommending certain places of interest to visit and the advisability of purchasing city passes for transportation and sightseeing.

Golden Route of the Nordic Countries, May 2019

Superb customer service.

Mikael provided superb customer service. Very pleased with his attention to detail. He was very courteous and quite helpful.

Anosha, United States

Nordic odyssey, july 2018, we will definitely use your services when we travel again.

We were very happy with everything. We did four countries during our tour and we enjoyed it very much. We were also able to customize many options which was great. I have to say a huge "thank you" to Alda. She was very knowledgeable and very helpful. She also helped us customize our tour the way we wanted. We will definitely use your services when we travel again.

Graham, Singapore

The classic scandinavian roundtrip, april 2018, it was so user friendly.

It was so user friendly and Cicci was very good in answering any queries promptly

Highlights of Scandinavia & Baltic Cruise, June 2017

Your professional attitude in handling the minutest details is something i admire the most.

I have done two once circle tour of Iceland and now Scandinavian east to west. Your professional attitude in handling the minutest details is something I admire the most. It helps everyone to be prepared. Thanks

Highlights of Scandinavia & Baltic Cruise, July 2016

We´d like to return.

The tour was highly enjoyable. We visited some wonderful places. Whilst we like to be independent, the organisation of our transport and accommodation was very good and allowed us to really relax and unwind. There are many places we'd like to return to. More time in Norway is certainly on our agenda!

Classic Scandinavia, June 2019

The location of the hotels could not have been better.

The location of the hotels could not have been better - all centrally located with access to points of interest and public transport. Transportation between cities was also well-planned.

Jasper, United States

Highlights of scandinavia & finland cruise, may 2018, allowed us to truly relax.

We were just thrilled with how wonderful the trip was, and are very grateful to Alda for all of her hard work and flexibility with our changing needs and many requests. Having all of the trip details planned by you allowed us to truly relax and enjoy an unparalleled vacation.

Roger, South Africa

The golden triangle of scandinavia, september 2017, nordic visitor handled everything very professionaly.

Nordic Visitor handled everything very professionaly.

Marlene, New Zealand

Scandinavian highlights by car, september 2016, highly recommended.

My only question is: Why is there not an "Excellent" option? Our holiday was most excellent in every way...! From my first email enquiry regarding the tour to the last minute of our holiday every aspect was excellent. Cecilia made the whole planning experience smooth and seamless, and the tour itself was most excellent. Wow! What an incredible job Nordic Visitor does! We felt so spoilt because everything had been done for us... all we needed to do was drive and have fun. This was an incredible tour and I can't speak highly enough about the slick operation Nordic Visitor runs. Highly, highly recommended!

Laurie, United States

Highlights of scandinavia & finland cruise, july 2016.

The support that Cicci and her colleagues provided was outstanding. We had a few minor things that needed to be adjusted during our trip and we received immediate and prompt service. All questions were addressed quickly and when changes were required, all our requests were met with a willing attitude. The trip was wonderful and it was nice to know that we had someone to contact should we have encountered any problems.

The Classic Scandinavian Roundtrip, May 2019

Greatly appreciated.

The fact that the travel documents clearly laid out the necessary transfers for trains, boats, planes, etc. was greatly appreciated. When the transfers involved a tricky change, the documents made sure to describe the signs as well as possible to assist. It was also nice to have all of the documents given to us in a single email so access was simple and easy.

Duncan, Australia

Golden route of the nordic countries, may 2018, went very smoothly.

I was very impressed with the efficiency of your staff and how processes that were meant to work actually went very smoothly. We have been traveling for many years and your organization is the least stress creating travel group we have experienced.

Scandinavian Highlights by Car, September 2017

Definitely recommend your company.

I would definitely recommend your company. Very helpful on the phone when booking and arranging extra items such as GPS. Very good English spoken.

A Tale of Four Cities, July 2017

Amazing tour.

This was an amazing tour for us to take as a family holiday (with teenagers) giving us a little insight into each country. Clearly planned to make the most of each city.

Matt, United States

Scandinavian highlights by car, june 2016, went incredibly smoothly.

We had a great experience from the very beginning. Cicci was always quick to respond to emails and answered all our questions prior to us making our final booking. Once we booked all the details (hotels, etc) started coming in and it was really helpful to have the "highlights" booklet to help us plan what we wanted to see and where we should stop each day on our drive. Really everything went incredibly smoothly through out the entire trip! We have no complaints!!

Getting to Scandinavia

Many of Nordic Visitor’s tours of Scandinavia begin in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and largest city. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the main gateway for international air travel in Sweden and is served by dozens of airlines. Furthermore, it serves as a major hub for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) and Norwegian Air.

Here are examples of other airlines that fly to Stockholm Arlanda: United Airlines, British Airways, Air France, EasyJet, Lufthansa, KLM, Icelandair, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways

We recommend checking airline websites directly for flight availability and timetables. You can also use an airfare search engine, such as Skyscanner, Dohop or Kayak, for example.

Flights are not included in Nordic Visitor packages, but all of our itineraries can be customised with extra nights in Stockholm, or another arrival city in Scandinavia, if you’d like to rest up after your air journey.

Different ways you can experience Scandinavia

We have tours for all varieties of travel styles and interests. See our options for exploring Scandinavia below.

Guided Small Groups

Independent cruise, independent train, scandinavian triangle, what to see and what to do on a tour of scandinavia.

The best way to enjoy a trip to Scandinavia is to visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same tour. Why? Because these countries share a similar cultural heritage and are well-connected via modern motorways, railways and waterways.

As such, we highly recommend a guided tour of the Highlights of Scandinavia or an independent tour of the Scandinavian Triangle . Both incorporate the capitals of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Travel between Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo via train and ferry and you’ll discover a land brimming with gorgeous scenery. Spend your days enjoying walking tours, savouring delicious Scandinavian meals, or cycling along the pedestrianised streets and bike lanes.

Come in the summer to enjoy long daylight hours, wild swimming and al fresco dining. In the winter, expect a festive wonderland and smaller crowds at top attractions. You may even get a chance to spot the northern lights!

It’s also good to know that our small group tours are close to all-inclusive Scandinavian holidays. We include all in-country transportation, hotel stays and breakfast. You’ll also receive personal travel documents, extra activities and tours to fill your days as well as around half of the evening meals.

As a specialised tour operator in Scandinavian countries, Nordic Visitor organises trips to this beautiful corner of the world. We have many more ideas and travel tips to help you explore Scandinavia your way!

  • First time in the Nordics? See our 7 amazing Scandinavia tours for first-time visitors

Here’s one of our suggested itineraries for a Scandinavia group tour with services included:

Day 1 - Arrival in Stockholm, Sweden Fly into Stockholm Arlanda Airport and head to your hotel in the city centre. You have the afternoon to explore as you wish. We recommend you spend some time walking through Gamla Stan (The Old Town), and enjoy a fika (a Swedish coffee break) with a nice pastry at one of the local cafés.

This evening, you’ll meet your tour leader and fellow travellers at a welcome dinner.

Day 2 - The highlights of Stockholm Spend a full day in the Swedish capital, discovering the city’s attractions and districts.

In the morning, you’ll join a bus and then a walking sightseeing tour to experience the best of Stockholm. Take in the must-see spots like the City Hall, Royal Palace and trendy Södermalm quarter before enjoying lunch in the Old Town.

You have the afternoon to explore on your own. We recommend taking a ferry to the nearby island of Djurgården, home to the Vasa Museum and Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum.

Day 3 - Railway journey to Copenhagen, Denmark This morning, your group will head to Stockholm Central Station for a half-day train journey to the capital of Denmark.

Once in Copenhagen, you’ll settle in your hotel before joining a local guide for a walking tour of the city’s highlights. Admire the grand Amalienborg Palace, the picturesque Nyhavn canal and get a taste of Denmark. Tonight, you’ll dine with the group.

Day 4 - Discover Copenhagen Soak up the charms of Copenhagen today. You’ll be treated to a guided tour of Rosenborg Castle this morning as well as an hour-long boat tour along the canals to take in the city from a different perspective. We’ve also included the entrance to the famous Tivoli Gardens amusement park for your enjoyment.

Day 5 - Overnight cruise to Oslo, Norway Ahead of your journey to Oslo tonight, spend the day enjoying more of Copenhagen. Why not make like the bicycle-happy Danes and rent a bike? You could also take in the city’s skyline from the viewpoint up the Round Tower.

Later, head to the port for your overnight cruise to Oslo. Your group will enjoy dinner onboard as you sail up the Kattegat Sund.

Day 6 - Explore Norway’s capital city After your ship arrives early in the morning, the whole day is yours to see Oslo. Join a bus tour with a knowledgeable local guide. You’ll see the highlights of the city such as the Royal Palace, Akershus fortress, City Hall and the Vigeland Sculpture Park.

Day 7 - Scenic train journey to Flåm This morning, go to Oslo Central Station to begin your Norway in a Nutshell® tour – one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Look out the window to see picturesque landscapes and quaint villages like Gol and Geilo.

Change at Myrdal to board the Flåm Railway for one of the top highlights of the entire trip: a 900-metre (half-mile) descent to the picturesque village of Flåm, where you’ll stay for the night. This evening, you’ll dine with the group at your hotel.

Day 8 - Norwegian fjord cruise Prepare to witness breathtaking Norwegian scenery today, as you hop on a cruise that takes you through beautiful fjords. You’ll be able to admire the glittering waters, cascading falls and forested mountains of Sognefjord, passing through Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. Afterwards, it’s an exciting coach and train ride to Bergen.

Day 9 - Discover Bergen Known as the gateway to the fjords , Bergen is Norway’s charming second city with plenty of its own attractions to uncover. Join a walking tour to learn more about the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bryggen. Later, you’ll take the funicular up Mount Fløyen for panoramic views of the city and fjords.

You have the rest of the day to explore Bergen more, before dining one last time with your travel companions.

Day 10 - Depart from Bergen, Norway Fly back home from Bergen-Flesland Airport, having enjoyed 10 days discovering the many delights of Scandinavia.

You can choose from a wide range of routes and tours in the region. For example, you could join one of our all-inclusive Scandinavian cruises . This kind of tour offers a variety of shore excursions to complement your trip. Or explore more of rural Scandinavia, travelling by train or on a road trip.

Or hop on a plane and visit Iceland as part of your Nordic experience. You can have a virtually all-inclusive tour of Iceland with your hotel stays, transport, activities and more booked in one package.

Good to know : Most of our vacation packages aren't set in stone, and there are many possibilities to tailor your plans. We can modify your tour if you'd prefer to arrive in a different city, spend time in other towns or add optional activities.

Just ask your Nordic Visitor travel consultant for advice.

The Ultimate Scandinavia Guide: The Best Times & Places to Visit

Are you thinking about planning a trip to Scandinavia ? Made up of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, this region is a top destination whether you’re looking to experience the northern lights or visit the grand capital cities.

This useful guide will help you figure out the best times to visit and the best places to see in Scandinavia. Get ready for a bucket-list worthy trip to the land of the Vikings, steep mountains, long fjords and majestic waterfalls.

Best time to visit Scandinavia

With four distinct seasons, Scandinavia has plenty to offer all year long. When is best to visit for you is personal and may depend on your pre-booked holidays, what you want to see and experience, or your preferred season.

Read below for a short-and-sweet guide to the best time to visit Scandinavia.

  • During the summer months, you could take on a self-drive trip around Scandinavia or join a small guided tour  with a local guide
  • Throughout the year, travel around Scandinavia independently via scenic trains and cruises journeys

1. Best time to visit Scandinavia for weather

Summer in Scandinavia, the months of July and August , is a great time to visit. At this time of year, you’re more likely to have pleasant and stable weather. Nature comes alive and locals and visitors alike can enjoy the great outdoors.

Another bonus of summer is the extended daylight hours. Take advantage of long days with more sightseeing and excursions.

The summer is also a good time for a road trip. Take the wheel, enjoy the warmer weather, go off the beaten track, and find your own corner of paradise.

  • Browse these summer Scandinavia packages

2. Best time to visit Scandinavia for quieter travel

Scandinavia is very popular with travellers – for excellent reasons! But do you dream of a quiet holiday, to experience the natural wonders in peaceful reflection? Or to capture the perfect photos without too many distractions?

Travelling during in winter has many benefits that you may enjoy. One of which is experiencing the country at your own relaxed pace.

If you would like to take advantage of the fairer weather and quieter attractions, visit during the shoulder season in May or September .

3. Best time to visit Scandinavia to see the northern lights

While summer may be ideal to visit the Nordic countries , it is not the best time to see the northern lights.

To see the aurora borealis you need a clear, dark sky, which is difficult to find in the Arctic region. This includes Northern Norway, Svalbard, Finnish and Swedish Lapland where the sun doesn't fully set in summer.

For the best chances of dark skies and northern lights spotting, visit Scandinavia and especially its northern reaches between October and March.

Day 1 Helsinki

Welcome to Helsinki! Touch down in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. After passing through arrivals, please make your own way to the hotel for check in.

The remainder of the day is at your leisure to discover Helsinki’s charms on your own. Choose to explore this walkable city by foot and admire the Art Nouveau architecture, or you may also choose to take a short ferry to the UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed Suomenlinna Fortress.

Transportation: Train connection between Helsinki city centre and Helsinki Airport is carried out by local commuter trains which run every 10 minutes on peak hours. Travel time from the Airport Train Station to Helsinki Central Station is about 30 minutes. Single ticket fare from Helsinki Airport to city centre is € 4.10 from the ticket machines located at the station.

Day 2 Helsinki

After breakfast this morning at your hotel, enjoy the Discover Helsinki Panorama Sightseeing excursion -  a popular sightseeing tour showing you the most important sights of Helsinki, giving you an excellent take of Helsinki's past and present. You will see some of the most interesting sites in Helsinki, including the historical centre, City Hall, The Parliament buildings, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House. Stop at the Temppeliaukio Church also called Rock Church (entry fee not included, to be paid on spot) or at the Sibelius Monument (if the Temppeliaukio Church is closed). The tour ends near Esplanade Park, a perfect central position to discover further sites of the city on foot.

Remainder of your day at leisure.

Day 3 Helsinki Rovaniemi

Make your way to the station to jump on a full day train journey to Rovaniemi, the ‘official’ home of Santa Claus. Upon arrival, make your own way to your centrally located hotel upon arrival in the early evening.

Discover this beautiful northern city at your own pace. Rovaniemi boasts sparkling clear days in spring, near-constant sunlight in summer and blazing colours in autumn.

Day 4 Rovaniemi

The day is at leisure to discover the capital of Finnish Lapland. Rovaniemi was once a powerful salmon and fur exporter, however, was completely destroyed during World War II. The city has since been rebuilt, and now boasts some impressive modern sights like the Arktikum Museum. Perhaps participate in one of many optional nature activities. For those that still believe in Santa Claus, then why not make a visit to Santa’s Village, which can be easily accessed from the city centre by public transport or a short taxi journey.

Day 5 Rovaniemi Levi

This morning you travel further north into Lapland by coach from Rovaniemi to Levi, a small skiing village in the heart of Finnish Lapland.  There are 12,000 reindeer in the Kittilä municipality, which is double the number of its population. All reindeer in Finland are protected by the Sami people. There are many reindeer in the forests as well as in the farms near Levi. In summer the reindeer wander freely in the forests, but you can spot them on the fells, along the roads in Levi itself or cooling down in the shades by the petrol stations and hotel yards!

Day 6 Levi Kilpisjärvi Tromsø

Today, your journey goes west, travelling across Finnish Lapland before crossing the border into mighty Norway. Your coach journey will take you  from Levi to the small township of Kilpisjärvi, where you change coaches. You will enjoy a breathtaking drive through the Lyngen Alps, before ending the day's journey in Tromsø, the gateway to the Arctic.

Day 7 Tromsø

After breakfast, you will enjoy an unforgettable Polar Fjord Cruise. Picking up in Tromsø city centre, this six hour cruise explores the incredible nature around Tromsø. Cruising through the neighbouring fjords, there will be a chance to see the local wildlife including sea eagles and maybe even dolphins. Your journey will cruise around in a charming, classic wooden boat, the Fjord Queen or the lovely Polar Queen. You can enjoy delicious Arctic fish, snacks, fruit, and hot drinks. This is a perfect opportunity to experience the arctic sea.  You can either settle inside in the warm main cabin of the ship, or brave the wilderness on deck as you admire the view.

Day 8 Tromsø Narvik

Your journey now heads South, travelling by local bus from Tromsø to Narvik, a popular city with those who enjoy mountaineering and skiing. The city’s flagship ski resort, Narvikfjellet, is famed for its extreme alpine landscapes. Narvik was also a strategically-important city during World War II, due to its nearby location to an abundance of natural resources.

The rest of the day is at your leisure. Why not visit the War Museum, or perhaps take the Narvik Fjellheisen (Cable Car) that will take you to up to 656 metres above sea level and offers incredible views.

Day 9 Narvik Storfjord Bodø

Today board a local coach and continue your journey southbound along the coast of Norway. Change coaches in Storfjord, before reaching Bodø, a vibrant city on the edge of the Norwegian Sea, encapsulating magnificent nature.  Here you may like to visit the Norwegian Aviation Museum, the largest such museum in Scandinavia, or perhaps just enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of this picturesque Arctic city.

Day 10 Bodø

This morning is at leisure until you embark on your tour to the famous Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest maelstrom (aka whirlpool). Before you arrive at this natural wonder, your tour will take you on a sightseeing tour through the city of Bodø to learn about the local history and sites. Upon arrival at the maelstrom, you can go to the waterfront and have a close look at this fascinating natural phenomenon and watch the major natural forces at play where every six hours, almost 400 million cubic metres of water passes through a narrow 150 metre wide passage with phenomenal speed. You will also experience a typical northern Norwegian activity – the bus driver will beat a dried cod on the rocks for you to taste a local delicacy. Afterwards,  you can walk around on natural paths in silence, and try to observe the majestic sea eagle which is living in this area.

Day 11 Bodø Trondheim

After breakfast, enjoy a morning at leisure to explore Bodø before making  your own way to the railway station to catch your lunch time train to Trondheim, also known as The Nordland Railway - Norway’s longest rail journey taking you through fertile farmland, massive forests and alongside arctic rivers.  Upon arrival in Trondheim, make your own way to your hotel.

Day 12 Trondheim

Today is free time to explore the historical city of Trondehim. Founded in 997 and served as Norway’s capital until 1217. Today, it is the third-largest city in Norway with an excellent collection of museums, heritage sites and outdoor pursuits. An absolute highlight is the gothic Nidaros Cathedral, built in the beginning of 1070 to memorialise the burial place of Olav II of Norway, the king who was killed in battle in 1030. Compact in size, Trondheim is easily explored on foot.

Day 13 Trondheim Oslo

Another rail journey awaits, this time from Trondheim to Oslo, the Norwegian Capital.  On arrival, make your own way to your hotel for check-in and then free evening. With loads of restaurants, bars and activity, a summer night in Oslo is easily enjoyed.

Day 14 Oslo

Today, you will enjoy a morning panoramic sightseeing tour of Oslo. Learn about the city’s history and culture from knowledgeable guides, admire the main attractions in the city centre and spectacular views from Holmenkollen ski jump, and experience a fascinating insight into the art of the most prolific Norwegian sculptor, Gustav Vigeland, as you walk through the unique Sculpture Park comprising more than 200 sculptures in bronze and granite.

Afternoon is at leisure to further explore Oslo, and why not visit one of the many museums including the Viking Museum or the Munch Museum, or just relax in one of the many restaurants or cafés.

Day 15 Oslo Stockholm

From one magnificent capital to another, today you leave beautiful Norway to catch a train to the vibrant and colourful Swedish Capital, Stockholm. Called ‘Beauty on water’ by the locals, Stockholm has an enormous array of sights, and we highly recommend visiting the City Hall building, the famous Vasa Museum, and if you are interested, the Abba Museum!  A walk in the historical old town, Gamla Stan,  is also a must alongside experiencing the local cuisine in one of the many restaurants and cafés.

Day 16 Stockholm

Today you will enjoy the Under the Bridges tour of Stockholm. Known as the ‘beauty on the water’, there is no better way to experience the sights of Stockholm than cruising its stunning waterways that pierce through this vibrant city. You will travel under twelve bridges and even pass through the lock that connects the Baltic Sea to Lake Mälaren. You will also see the inner city, Gamla Stan, Södermalm, Lilla and Stora Essingen, the new area Hammarby Sjöstad, and the green parks of Djurgården.

The remainder of your day at leisure.

Day 17 Stockholm Copenhagen

One final magnificent rail journey on your Scandinavian adventure, as you take the train from Stockholm to the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Located on the coastal islands of Zealand and Amager, Copenhagen is one of Scandinavia’s most dynamic cities, and features an incredible historic centre, colourful heritage architecture, vibrant streetscapes and pleasant waterfront promenades.

After disembarkation, make your own way to your hotel for check-in.

In the afternoon make your way to Nyhavn, the world famous harbour of Copenhagen to  enjoy your Copenhagen Canal Tour. The classic tour takes you around Copenhagen’s harbour and its idyllic canals. You will hear about the beautiful churches, castles and heritage listed houses scattered throughout the city.

In the evening, you will enjoy entrance tickets to the famous Tivoli Gardens, where you might like to dine or at least take in the atmosphere of the world’s oldest amusement park and its stunning gardens.

Day 18 Copenhagen

Your Scandinavia Uncovered tour ends after breakfast. We hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your inspiring Scandinavian experience. At the appropriate time please make your own way to the airport for your onward journey.

The easiest way to get to Copenhagen Airport is the train from Copenhagen Central Station, which departs every 10 minutes during the day, and every 20 minutes in the evening. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes and costs 36DKK (AUD $7).
