ALBUM REVIEW: Somewhere Through The Night – The Young Hearts

Having built up a decent head of steam off the back of their debut full-length  The Modern State , Kent punk rock band THE YOUNG HEARTS  return with their new album Somewhere Through The Night . The band have shared stages with the likes of MALLORY KNOX ,  CAN’T SWIM ,  JUNIOR  and many others, allowing themselves to build a rabid and dedicated fanbase who will receive this album with open arms. The quartet have leaned into a more punk sound as the years have gone by, and this album marks them out further still as a name to watch.

Somewhere Through The Night is full of upbeat songs, especially the opener Famous Last Words, which will translate well live with its rocking instruments and fantastic drum beat that carries the song, and third track The Way Back , a mid-tempo rock song with some brilliant vocals and an enjoyable backing guitar riff. Admittedly between these two is Take A Ride , which sounds like a rehash of Famous Last Words in both vocal delivery and instruments, making it hard to differentiate them, but it is nonetheless a strong start to the album.

Whilst things take a dip in energy a bit on fourth track Good Company , a mid-paced rock song, thankfully Hit The Ground Running brings things back up to speed with a brilliant rocking guitar riff introduction before launching into a joyful rock song that is both fast-paced and danceable. Our Hometown marks the mid-way point of the album, and it somewhat predictably falls into the angsty emo-rock like many before it. It isn’t a bad song on its own, but it is a path that has been trodden many times before, and sadly THE YOUNG HEARTS  don’t bring anything new to the table with it.

Thankfully, things pick up a lot in the latter half of the album. Whether it is the triumphant rock of Lucky Ones or the fun-loving punk of A Charmed Society , the joyfulness of the songs bleeds through the speakers. Of course, there are softer moments, such as Passenger , which utilises the harmonica and acoustic guitar, and in fact the last six songs of the album are the most experimental as the band try new things.

Some people might view the last half of the album as the band trying to make things more interesting after a beginning half that was fun, but also walked familiar ground. However, the album is so well produced that the more experimental half sounds as natural as the first half, and it shows that whilst the band have made themselves at home in rock, there is still room for them to flex some different musical muscles without distracting from their core sound.

Overall, Somewhere Through The Night is a brilliant album by one of the most exciting bands to emerge over the last few years. Although it is still early days for them,  THE YOUNG HEARTS  have created an album that is cohesive, with a core sound, and also a little bit experimental. If the first half of the album is a little rusty, it is the second half that reveals the winning formula and makes it very clear that THE YOUNG HEARTS  are a name to watch, if you weren’t aware of that already of course.

Rating: 8/10

The Young Hearts  release their next single ’Famous Last Words’ on the 29th September 2023

the young hearts tour

1. For someone that is yet to discover ‘The Young Hearts’, in 5 words how would you describe the band . Anthemic, Upbeat, Honest, Relatable and Nostalgic

2. How did The Young Hearts come together? The band formed after a previous band fell apart and went separate ways. Three of us were still determined to keep creating music, but we wanted to write songs that were more for ourselves rather than trying to fit into a current trend.

3. What’s the story behind your band’s name? Unfortunately, there’s no real exciting story behind the band name ? We just went through a load of books and songs trying to find something that stood out. We liked the way ‘The Young Hearts’ sounded, and it kind of summed us up pretty well. We are by no means the freshest faces of the music industry, but I think we bring a lot of heart and passion to the music we write.

4. Where do you feel you fit into the music landscape? We’re definitely a nostalgia band but without sounding dated or tired. We remind people our age of the bands they used to love growing up, but without just rehashing that sound, it’s fresh and genuine. There’s a lot of heart to what we write, but I like to think we wouldn’t sound out of place among the dive bar punk bands or on the big stages with the huge stadium rock bands

5. What other artists or bands do you draw inspiration from? We draw a lot of inspiration from punk bands like The Gaslight Anthem and The Menzingers, but we’re also huge fans of the stadium bands like The Killers and Springsteen.

6. What’s currently in the pipeline for you? So we finished recording our second full length record a few weeks ago, and that will be released in the coming months. After that we just want to promote and share it as best we can. It’s something we’re all incredibly proud of, and we just want to make sure it reaches as far as possible.

7. If you had to boil down what you each bring to the band, what would your answer be? The four of us have such a great working relationship that really works for The Young Hearts. I’d say I bring a lot of creativity for the band; visually and sonically I have an idea of how I want everything to sound and look. Conor helps make the creative vision a reality, I think we’re completely on the same wavelength in that respect and he always knows what’s needed to get to where we want to be. Stew is a constant driving force behind the band, he understands the business side of things better than any of us, and keeps on top of everything we need to be doing going forward. Joe has a real enthusiasm, and a willingness to do whatever is needed. He absolutely loves the drums and being in a band, and that energy is crucial to keep us heading in the right direction.

8. How do TYH differ from most other artists/bands? It’s always been hard for people to place The Young Hearts in any specific genre, and there are aspects of our sound that suggest we’re ultimately trying to bridge a gap between a number of them. We’re also not afraid to wear our influences on our sleeve. If someone said ‘oh, they just want to sound like this band or that band’, I’d say ‘hell yeah, why wouldn’t we want to play songs that sound like our favourite bands’. We’re not trying to fool anyone, we all live and breathe music and at the end of the day we’re writing music purely for our own enjoyment.

9. What can fans expect from your new record ‘Famous Last Words’. ‘Famous Last Words’ is the fourth single from our upcoming full length. It’s a guitar heavy, hook laden anthem for all the bands that inspired us to keep chasing the dream in our mid thirties.

10. Who would you most like to collaborate with artistically? We have so many influences, from artists that shaped us growing up, to the current bands that make us want to push even further artistically. There’s of course the obvious candidates like Bruce Springsteen, Brandon Flowers, Brian Fallon, all incredible songwriters, but if I could have someone step in and do guest vocals on a song I’d written, it would probably be Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. Her voice is out of this world, so unique, powerful and soothing all at once. It would be a dream.

11. What was your worst performance? So, I like to think that we’ve had very few poor performances over the years, but there was a show a few years back on a tour we did. We loaded in at around 4/5pm as we normally would, only to be told that it was a late show and we probably wouldn’t be playing till nearer midnight. We killed the time by hitting the bar in the venue and waiting to play. Just before our set time, around 11pm, I realised I’d been drinking 7% beers the whole time and was pretty drunk taking the stage. I mean, I’m pretty sure I played all the right notes but I was definitely seeing double when I looked at the lights on my pedal board, forgetting words here and there and generally talking way too much between songs. I like to think we got away with it but you live and you learn.

12: What was the most difficult obstacle your band has ever faced and how did you overcome it? So Covid was a huge obstacle for the whole music industry, and for us it led to half of our band calling it a day, leaving myself and Stew (bass) asking ourselves whether we could carry on without them. I think it was sheer determination and belief in the songs that we had been writing that kept us going. We were never in this for glory, just to keep making the music that we love.

the young hearts tour

13: How does your creative process work – do all members contribute equally or is there one main songwriter? Our songwriting process is fairly standard. I’ll write a basic song structure with lyrics and vocals, record a rough demo and we’ll take it into the studio to record. We’ll go through all drum parts, guitar lead parts and bass as a band until the song is at a place we are all fully happy with. It can be a long process but we put everything into our songwriting, and won’t put anything out we’re not all 100% behind.

14: Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music? I wouldn’t exactly say there’s a hidden meaning in our songs, I try and write about my own personal experiences and how they’ve affected me, but in a way that’s relatable to the listener. Any message we try and put across is always about being positive, and making the best of whatever hand we’re dealt. It’s all about the silver linings.

15: Who would you like to see Live past or present and why? For me personally, I’ll always regret never seeing Tom Petty live. He was such a phenomenal songwriter, and was a massive part of my musical upbringing. The Clash would also be right at the top of the list of bands I wish I’d been alive to see in their prime.

THE YOUNG HEARTS   Brand New Album!

  Somewhere Through The Night

  Written By:

the young hearts tour

Going into the New Year, check out this banger album! UK’s exceptional for their artists, and one that we must give a shout out to is a four-piece alternative punk/rock band, The Young Hearts. These British talented men have brought the masses a 12 track of their newest album December 2023 via Year of The Rat Records.  The UK is their home, where they have been inspired with this latest album Somewhere Through The Night, expressing their lives from during the torrential pandemic, life’s hardships and striving to keep doing what they love! This is “their time”, and they aren’t taking any prisoners! These gents will be on tour exploding with the stars as they align via UK in February 2024 with The Lonely Surf, then the journey extends through Germany along with Final Stair! Get ready for this tenacious tour that will change your life and inspire your soul!

The Young Hearts have accomplished so much already featured worldwide coverage BBC Radio 6, Alt Press, Radio X, RTE2XM, Total Rock Radio, Triple J, BBC, Idobi Radio, 89FM, Kerrang, Rock Sound, BBC, BT TV and so much more with their dedicated direction there is only up for these lads! Well done!

This 12 track Album ‘ Somewhere Through The Night’ is spectacular with catchy riffs and harmonious audio canvas for all music lovers out there! The Young Hearts write music with a visual essence to it where you can see and hear the story which we all can resonate with.  Let us begin with my favorite song, ” Famous Last Words”, that gives me utter chills! The song takes us for a ride down a long road of life, with our friends, with the windows down, surrounded by uplifting acceptance from our ride or dies, aka true friends, through hell and high water!

“Roll down your window

throw your caution out tonight!”

What a great idea and this is so true in which we need to think like  more in this life. It’s about taking chances and allowing yourself to thrive and never give up!

” Why we waiting to die”, is such a great line written here! Our lives get so redundant and monotonous! The band’s message is a way to remind us that we have one life, so go chase those dreams!

Another pronounced song on this track, “Take A Ride” is a fast-moving lyrical ride with beautiful guitars, fast drums and every instrument blending so smoothly, then you get those solo vocals capturing the moment! Third song on this track, ” The Way Back” has this nostalgic lyrical content giving that glance to the past mistakes, but also learning lessons we experience. I think this song might be a song about their ode to their lives, and not giving up on what one loves! The Young Hearts bring that fast punk rock feel with a gritty trueness singing from the heart for certain!

“Good Company” is such an endearing song, you will want to share with your friends and family, inspiring each other every day possible!

The 5 th song on this track, “Hit The Ground Running” speaks for itself! It has fast moving parts ready to get it done and conquer! Then “Our Hometown” takes us for a nice stroll in the bands’ neighborhood where they grew up, and makes them who they are today with integrity, authenticity and driven as hell!

Every song tells a story, and there are 12 of them! There is so much to say about every song on this album. With such depth, and sincerity, The Young Hearts bring us an album which they dedicated to the fans, telling their story of triumphs and tribulations, and paying homage to the ones that believed in them while on this never-ending journey of music. Check out their videos on YouTube!

This album is fantastic and I can totally envision on a movie soundtrack, in an inspiring movie about passionate souls driving that road to the ends of the earth to keep their inspiration ignited!

New Band Of The Week: The Young Hearts

Want to discover your new favourite band? Then check out this very column, every Monday

the young hearts tour

On December 18, Deal quartet The Young Hearts breathed a collective sigh of relief as ‘Everything We Left Behind’ was finally released.

It’s more than a debut EP; it’s a document of perseverance throughout two years of struggle and personal setbacks, as guitarist Aaron Jackson explains.

“It took us about eight months to get it out there because we had a few mishaps,” explains Jackson. “Two of the band were in a car crash and we’ve lost jobs and loved ones, so it’s been a bit of a mission, really. But we’re still here to tell the tale.”

Not only that, but the band – completed by bassist Stew Thorpe, drummer Matt Cattell and guitarist/vocalist Craig Lawrence and formed out of the ashes of, Promise Me Tomorrow, the members’ previous project– have taken those experiences and infused them into the five urgent and impassioned tracks. Full-bodied and anthemic emo-rock that’s by turns triumphant and wounded, The Young Hearts’ songs are very much the sums of their parts, their experiences. But it wasn’t always that way.

“Our previous band,” says Jackson, “we were kind of just in a band to sound like a band, but now we play what we want to play. Craig had a lot to say on this EP after everything we’d been through. He went through some hard times and the songwriting definitely touches on the stuff that happened to us. We were a dark place, but we’re coming out the other side of it now.”

That might be so, but the sense of stark desolation on this record permeates everything, right through to its cover art - a photo of a desolate, abandoned room – that serves as a visual representation of the EP’s title.

“Me, Craig and Craig’s friend were hunting around for some photos,” says Jackson, “and one day we decided to do some locational shooting and – I shouldn’t say this – we broke into an old, disused asylum. It was pretty creepy in there. I’m not going to lie – we had the heebie jeebies. Everything We Left Behind is about looking onto newer pastures, but we needed something old and degraded to get the contrast across. We had to be very sly when we took that picture, because there was a lot of work going on. We had to do a proper Navy Seal maneuvre, but you have to take a few risks to get the good stuff!”

It’s an even more impressive start given the turmoil that enveloped the band and the making of the EP, but one that should help the four-pieces expand beyond the horizons of the small town they come from. Not that they’re thinking that far ahead yet.

“I’m just happy that people are listening to us,” chuckles Jackson. “We didn’t even think the EP was going to make the light of day. Now we’ve got even got a video out. It’s exciting. And there’s definitely going to be more to come.”

The Young Hearts’ Everything We Left Behind is out now on No Panic Records. For more information, visit their Facebook page.

UK Punk-Rock Band The Young Hearts Make A Confident Comeback With New Single, "The Way Back"

UK punk-rock band The Young Hearts come back from their twelve-month hiatus after their debut album, The Modern State, and release their new emotionally revealing single, "The Way Back."

the young hearts tour

When UK punk-rock band The Young Hearts burst onto the scene, their emotively nostalgic 2021 debut album, The Modern State , would jumpstart their popularity. Showing they took the time to hone their craft, it seemed that things were on the right track for the band. However, soon after, the band would go on a twelve-month hiatus.

"Lyrically ‘The Way Back’ captures everything about that journey, and how we found our way back to this point again."

The Young Hearts' future was unknown, and they had no idea where they were going. Unsure of The Young Hearts' future and of where they were going, the band would embark on a journey to discover their true path. Having learned from the past, The Young Hearts is not interested in reinventing the wheel or becoming a ground-breaking band. What has manifested is a sound that makes them happy with their new confident single, "The Way Back." While their way forward has not been the easiest, "The Way Back" displays a comfortable side of the band that shows that they are writing for themselves and doing music that they love.

What inspired The Young Hearts? What was going on at the time when you wanted to start this band?

Craig: The inspiration is simply a love of music. We’ve been doing this a long time and I don’t think we’d still have the drive and enthusiasm if we didn’t enjoy writing songs and making music as much as we do. At the time The Young Hearts started, we’d just split from our previous band. We knew we didn’t want to give up the dream, but I think we’d spent too long trying to fit into a certain scene and sound a certain way. The Young Hearts is just us, writing songs for us, playing the sort of music that we love.

What are your music influences? Anything outside of music that inspired your latest single, "The Way Back?"

Craig: We have a lot of musical influences, and we’re certainly not afraid to wear them on our sleeve. We love blue-collar punk bands like The Gaslight Anthem and The Menzingers, but we also love huge stadium bands like Bruce Springsteen and The Killers, and I think you can hear that inspiration in our songs. As I said before, we’re making music for ourselves, we’re not trying to create something new, or be this groundbreaking band, we just want to write songs that we love, and that we hope others can enjoy too. As for the inspiration behind "The Way Back." it’s us finding our feet again after the pandemic and coping with the challenges of growing up.

How has this process been different from any material you have worked on in the past? How is this different from your 2021 debut release, The Modern State ?

Craig: With The Modern State , we knew we wanted to release an album, so it was simply a case of let’s write 11 songs and go in the studio. Once the pandemic hit, and the band went on hiatus, I got myself a home studio set up and just started writing and recording songs, with no real idea or plan of what might become of them. It gave me a lot more time to really dig into every section, writing and re-writing parts.

Even when we went into the recording studio, because we were in no rush, and didn’t have that pressure, we’ve taken our time and with each section, we were constantly asking ourselves ‘is this the best it possibly can be?’. The Modern State is something we are still incredibly proud of, and I wouldn’t change it cause it absolutely captures where we were then, and it’s the jumping-off point for where we find ourselves now. We’ve still got that sound and that energy but now we’ve grown as musicians, as people, and more importantly as a band.

You went on a twelve-month hiatus before this single came out. Can we talk a bit about that?

Craig: I feel, in some ways, this correlates lyrically to your new single. So, throughout the pandemic, two of our members decided that pursuing the band just wasn’t possible for them anymore, and for a short while it looked like The Young Hearts was done. To be honest, it had become more and more difficult to keep pouring so much of ourselves into it with little reward for so long. We actually called time on the band and it looked like that was it for our journey, but it didn’t take long for the two of us left to realize that playing music was such a huge part of our lives, that we couldn’t give it up completely.

I’d written a whole load of songs that I was excited about, so we just decided to get back in the studio and keep the band going without any of the pressure and commitment we felt before. We brought in Conor on guitar and Joe on drums, and they’ve helped breathe some life back into The Young Hearts with their enthusiasm. Lyrically ‘The Way Back’ captures everything about that journey, and how we found our way back to this point again.

In what ways has this process helped you evolve as artists coming back from last year's release to now with your new single, " The Way Back?"

Craig: I think the break has definitely given us a new perspective. We’re concentrating on enjoying ourselves more than anything and at the end of the day, we are all massive fans of music. We just want to write great songs, but in our own time, and not just putting content out for the sake of it.

Each of us has a life and responsibilities outside of The Young Hearts, and we’ve accepted that we can’t pursue this dream the way we did ten years ago, but we’ve also realized that we don’t want to stop. I genuinely think we are a better band because of this. It’s allowing us the time, conditions, and freedom to write the best material we ever have.

What do you want people to take from this release? What have you taken from this personally as an artist?

Craig: "The Way Back" is the start of a new era for The Young Hearts. We’ve got two new members and this is the first output for us as this line-up, so it feels fresh and has given us this new lease on life. This song has been the inspiration for us to push our sound to the next level but still keeps what makes us The Young Hearts. We hope that people can relate to the track, but also just enjoy it as much as enjoyed recording it.

What is next for The Young Hearts?

Craig: Our immediate plans are to release more of the new songs we’ve been working on intending to put out our second record sometime next year hopefully, but most importantly we just want to concentrate on enjoying being a band again, without any of the pressure we were putting on ourselves previously.

We recognize the importance of partnership with parents in the educational journey of their children. To this end, we conduct parent/teacher conferences twice per academic year, providing opportunities for open communication and collaboration. These conferences allow us to share your child’s progress, discuss their development, and work together to support their continued growth and learning.

Read Your Way Through the San Francisco Bay Area

The Bay Area has had many lives. The Oakland novelist Leila Mottley shares books that paint a picture of the city that lives and breathes today.

In this illustration, one can see a corner of San Francisco featuring the City Lights bookstore and several passers-by. In the foreground, a woman leans against a pole and reads a book.

By Leila Mottley

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books.

The San Francisco Bay Area is anything but a monoculture. Go to San Francisco, hop across the Bay Bridge into Oakland, then head up into Richmond or down to Hayward, and the landscape around you — the people, the food, the particular cadence of walk and talk — will morph. To read the Bay Area is to traverse the spectrum of a place that has had many lives, simultaneously a landing spot for people seeking sanctuary and a place that has repelled the very people who have shaped it and loved it most.

The Bay Area is known for starting shit. We are the genesis for movements, trends, renaissances, from political uprisings to the artists who resonate from the stereos in our cars. The Bay Area is unafraid to be first. We are the creators of legacies — and also often overlooked.

I could tell you about Jack London’s early 1900s Oakland or John Steinbeck’s Salinas Valley, but that would tell you very little about the Bay Area that lives and breathes today — the people you will stumble into and love like your own, the dips in our roads and the weaving roots of our trees. It’s important to acknowledge the literary canon, but its gaps are deep, particularly when it comes to painting a full picture of one of the most racially and ethnically diverse regions in the country.

I’m here to give you a more complete vision of my home by sharing stories that see us as we see ourselves: stories of rebellion, of breath, of found family. Stories of creation.

What are your favorite books about Oakland?

Arguably the most foundational Oakland book from the past decade is “ There There ,” by Tommy Orange . Orange writes vignettes from the perspectives of different Native characters across the U.S. who gather for the Big Powwow at the Oakland Coliseum. Somehow, Orange’s sophomore novel, “ Wandering Stars, ” gives us even more Oakland, expanding through time and neighborhoods in his unforgettable voice. Yes, this is the Oakland we love: vibrant, scrappy and complex. And what a relief it is to finally see it woven in the glorious thread of language.

Young adult novels get a bad rap, maybe because, even when we were teenagers, we wanted more from the stories we were given and assume the same lack from the Y.A. that exists today. But Carolina Ixta’s debut Y.A. novel, “Shut Up, This Is Serious,” proves that it is possible — and vital — to give young people a story that is rooted and complicated, crafted by an author who believes these readers are competent enough to handle an honest depiction of Mexican American girlhood in East Oakland. Ixta tells a compelling and beautifully written coming-of-age story, and even if you’re not a young person, you will find this is one of the most nuanced contemporary novels set in Oakland.

What should I read to learn about the Black Panthers?

You cannot read the Bay Area without understanding the impact of the Black Panthers. In particular, Oakland’s history of resistance has an important place in the archives of the Black Power movement and its continuation in Black Lives Matter and beyond. “Seize the Time: The Story of the Black Panther Party and Huey P. Newton,” by Bobby Seale, and “Revolutionary Suicide,” Huey P. Newton’s autobiography, are important, but Elaine Brown’s memoir “A Taste of Power” deserves more attention as the firsthand account of the only chairwoman of the Black Panther Party in the organization’s history and a critical examination of misogyny within the movement.

You can find these books, and more by and about Black activists, at Marcus Books , one of the oldest Black-owned independent bookstores in the United States, which stocks classics as well as work from local authors and independent presses.

Where should I go to read at U.C. Berkeley?

Visit the Morrison Library , a beautiful, electronics-free reading room, and read cult classics by Berkeley alumni — like Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s mesmerizing “Dictee,” which grapples with language in unexpected ways. You can also explore books by writers who taught at the university and left their mark on the literature of the Bay Area, such as “The Color Purple,” by Alice Walker , and “Naming Our Destiny: New and Selected Poems,” by June Jordan.

Then, visit Berkeley’s Poetry Walk on Addison Street between Shattuck Avenue and Milvia Street, where you’ll find cast-iron plaques inlaid in the sidewalk with selected poetry by local authors and internationally renowned writers.

What should I read to young people?

When I was a child, one of my favorite picture books was Patricia Polacco’s “In Our Mothers’ House,” about two lesbian moms and their adopted children, which honors queer families in the East Bay. In another remarkable picture book, “Last Stop on Market Street,” by Matt de la Peña, a Black boy travels by bus with his grandmother through the streets of San Francisco, asking questions about class from a child’s perspective. Like many Bay Area kids, I spent much of my childhood on the bus or on BART trains, and this book is a sweet ode to the view from those little windows.

For teenage (and adult) readers, Malinda Lo’s “Last Night at the Telegraph Club” portrays a Chinese American teenager coming of age and discovering her sexuality in 1954 San Francisco’s Chinatown. Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel “ American Born Chinese ” explores race, home and identity through the story of a Chinese American boy growing up in a predominantly white San Jose suburb. Yang was born in the East Bay before his family moved to a suburb of San Jose, and his childhood spent across the Bay can be felt in this novel, which was recently adapted as a television show on Disney+.

What if I just want to have a good time?

If you’re looking to have a warm heart and a happy mind, try Rita Williams-Garcia’s “ One Crazy Summer ,” a novel for young people that tells the story of three sisters going to visit their mother in Oakland in 1968. It’s a refreshing book that reflects the activism and community work of the Black Panthers through a child’s eyes.

For romance fans, Jasmine Guillory should be at the top of your list. Guillory’s “The Wedding Date” spans the range of California, and is full of references to the Bay Area.

Danyel Smith’s “Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop” is a dissection of the history of pop music and Black women’s contributions to it. Smith is a music reporter from Oakland and this book is a testament to her abundant knowledge .

What can I read about other parts of the Bay Area?

Elaine Castillo’s “ America Is Not the Heart ” is a poignant portrayal of Filipino immigrant communities in Milpitas and the surrounding South Bay in the 1990s. The San Francisco Bay Area has the second largest Filipino population in the United States, and Castillo examines the divisions between different Filipino ethnic groups, the radical legacy of the New People’s Army and how a career might not follow you to a new country.

If you’d like to explore the area north of San Francisco, “Solito,” by Javier Zamora, is one of the most beautiful and devastating memoirs I have ever read. The book follows Zamora’s migration at 9 years old from El Salvador and through Mexico in an attempt to join his parents in San Rafael, California. While the book isn’t set in the Bay, it is the eventual landing point for Zamora. “Solito” captures the experience of having multiple homes and what it means to leave one home and seek belonging in another, an experience that’s common among immigrant communities in the Bay Area (and beyond).

For those looking for fiction that delves into untold histories, Margaret Wilkerson Sexton’s “ On the Rooftop ” explores the gentrification of San Francisco in the 1950s as it follows three sisters in a singing group in the Fillmore. It will transport you to a San Francisco that is rarely written of — except maybe in Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” which is required reading for everyone, everywhere.

What poets should I read?

The Bay Area has a robust poetic legacy. In the 1950s, drawing from jazz improvisation, the Beat poets created a culture of free-verse poetry. Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti often get the most glory, but it would be remiss to forget Bob Kaufman, a Black poet known for reciting poems on the street. A comprehensive selection of his work, “ Collected Poems of Bob Kaufman ,” was published by San Francisco’s iconic and longstanding (Ferlinghetti-founded) City Lights Bookstore .

The Bay Area has produced some incredible contemporary poets like Chinaka Hodge (read her collection “Dated Emcees” — it’s brilliant) and Tongo Eisen-Martin, the most recent San Francisco poet laureate. Eisen-Martin’s collection “ Heaven Is All Goodbyes ” is one of my favorites, wielding words to deconstruct the language of capitalism and displacement. Pick this up if you want to read a poem and sit stunned, returning to it again and again.

A poet is also a performer, and some will take your breath away if you have the honor of witnessing them recite. Among them are Mahogany L. Browne , the author of the long-form book/poem/masterpiece “I Remember Death by Its Proximity to What I Love” and the recent collection “Chrome Valley,” and Darius Simpson , the author of “Never Catch Me.” A special shout-out to the spectacular Danez Smith poem “ Tonight, in Oakland ,” from his collection “Don’t Call Us Dead,” which brings me down to my bones every time:

Let wherever two people stand be a reunion of ancient lights. Let’s waste the moon’s marble glow shouting our names to the stars until we are the stars. O, precious God! O, sweet black town! I am drunk & I thirst.

At the Kennedy Center, a fiery Rotterdam Philharmonic closes its tour

The young israeli conductor lahav shani led the dutch orchestra in a program that featured russian pianist daniil trifonov.

the young hearts tour

There was enough excitement — and mystery — surrounding the appearance of Lahav Shani, chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, that the audience burst into applause when a well-dressed gentleman strolled onstage to move a chair. (Granted, this was probably overdue; he really moved that chair.)

Shani, 35, striking and smiling, emerged shortly thereafter, inspiring thunderous corrective applause. Since 2018, the pianist and conductor has served as the youngest chief conductor in the history of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, 91 of whom were in town for the final date on a six-concert tour. Last year, it was announced that the Israeli conductor will take over as music director of the Munich Philharmonic starting in the 2026-2027 season.

At 26, Shani led the Vienna Philharmonic as an emergency substitute for Franz Welser-Möst in what amounted to a breakthrough performance , praised in Die Presse for his unflustered demeanor and lively music, “mit Gedankenfundament” (i.e., with a foundation of thought).

It’s a sharp appraisal of a first encounter with Shani, an energetic multitasker whose arresting physicality from the podium is both reserved and explosive: He balls up, he bursts out. The superheroic might he displays onstage is ever-tempered by its trusty sidekick, thoughtful modesty; it’s an instantly likable dynamic — whether he’s conducting the orchestra or spinning around to whip up the audience’s patchy applause between movements.

Monday’s program, presented by Washington Performing Arts, reflected the Rotterdam’s institutional profile as one of history’s most esteemed Dutch orchestras (founded in 1918), as well as its unofficial standing as the feisty younger cousin of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam (1888).

In Arvo Pärt’s 2013 “Swansong,” we heard the orchestra’s rich sonority. In Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat Major (the “Jeunehomme,” or the “Jenamy,” depending on who you ask), we heard its deep absorption and understanding of classic repertoire. In a suite of 10 selections from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” we heard its flair for drama. In each piece, we were treated to a magnificent orchestra.

Inspired by words taken from a sermon delivered by the 19th-century cardinal John Henry Newman (“a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last”), Pärt’s “ Swansong ” is an effective capture of the composer’s mix of the modern and the monastic.

The first thing I noticed — as oboe, harp and bassoon bloomed over subtly percolating pizzicato triplets — was the arrangement of the orchestra: the basses and cellos stage right and tucked in, the percussionists parted to opposite ends of the stage, the strings split into a deep stereo field. Such minor tweaks have a big impact in a boxy hall like the Kennedy Center, and the effect Monday was to allow the orchestra’s many talents to truly pop. More so than usual, I found myself tracking the sound around the stage like a tennis ball.

It was a beautiful take on the Pärt, Shani fortifying the composer’s sturdy structures while honoring his fondness for lightness — the soft fall of daylight through the stained glass of an old cathedral.

The Style section

Having heard Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov play works by only countrymen, including Rachmaninoff , Shostakovich and Prokofiev , I’d come to understand him as a hard player. I once described him as “ingot-fingered” in my notebook, but the phrase never made it out. But his weighty playing was notable only for his unlikely delicacy and fleetness, dispatched when needed with athletic ease.

On Monday, this ease characterized the guest soloist’s gentle mastery of Concerto No. 9, from his teasing emergence in the first movement, “Allegro,” to the rushing, cascading cadenzas of the closing “Rondo,” everything pulled off with a blend of authority, reverence and energetic musicianship. The orchestra made a fabulous partner to Trifonov, their buoyant rapport flush with a nearly flirtatious intimacy.

I loved those moments in the first movement when the strings seemed to catch their breath and/or clutch their pearls. I was frequently moved by Shani’s expressive dynamic liberties, the animation he allowed into the sound. And I was charmed by Trifonov’s sensitivity — like the fading repetition of a melody in the “Andantino,” the way you might recite someone’s name to remember it. This was a softer, more human Trifonov than I’d ever heard, and the musicians of Rotterdam met him where they needed to. (You could say they went Dutch.)

Following long and loud applause, Trifonov returned to the stage for a little more Mozart, the “Adagio” movement of his Sonata in F Major (K. 332) — played with a soft touch and slight pep.

Sharp. Witty. Thoughtful. Sign up for the Style Memo newsletter.

Shani closed the program with 10 selections from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” a showcase of individual talents in the orchestra: There was especially beautiful solo work by concertmaster Marieke Blankestijn, clarinetist Bruno Bonansea, saxophonist Femke Ijlstra, and flutists Juliette Hurel and Joséphine Olech — as well as Shani’s ability to create dramatic punch in the moment, and craft an inviting narrative arc (however incomplete) over time.

By the death of Tybalt and the lovers’ tomb-side reunion, Shani had worked the suite into an appropriately torrid affair, the orchestra delivering thick gales of strings and blasts of brass of sometimes shocking force as the tragedy plodded toward disaster.

A bounding, buoyant full-orchestra encore of Prokofiev’s “March,” Op. 99 ended the evening on a happy note — its warm reception an assurance that the next time Shani comes to town, he won’t be mistaken for anyone else.

Taylor Swift holding guitar and making heart hand gesture on the Eras Tour.

Baby, let the games begin.

Starting tonight, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+ .

Just three days after the surprise announcement of her upcoming 11th album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift surprised fans with another announcement — the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” concert film would be heading to Disney+ in just a few short weeks.

It follows a digital release on rental platforms like Prime Video, but the film has since been pulled from those retailers in advance of this Disney+ release.

The movie broke records during its October theatrical run, becoming the highest worldwide-grossing concert/documentary film ever ; it’s only fitting, considering the tour itself is the first concert tour to gross over $1 billion.

Below, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” from release time to why we’re calling this one “Taylor’s Version.”

When will ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ be on Disney+?

While originally announced to debut on Friday, March 15, Swift took to Instagram to reveal that the release date had moved up to Thursday, March 14 (that’s today!).

What time does ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ premiere on Disney+?

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” premieres on Disney+ at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

How to watch ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ on Disney+:

Since “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is streaming exclusively on Disney+ , you’ll need a subscription to the streaming service to tune in.

Disney+ starts at $7.99/month for ad-supported streaming, but there are a variety of bundles available to add more services at a discount. These bundles start at $9.99/month for Disney+ and Hulu, both with ads, and run up to $24.99/month for ad-free Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.

If you want just Disney+ ad-free, it’ll cost $13.99/month.

Can I watch ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ for free?

Taylor Swift performing on stage with a group of women.

Unfortunately, Disney+ does not offer a free trial, so you won’t be able to stream ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ for free.

What makes this version of ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ “Taylor’s Version?”

Put simply? It’s just more songs.

When “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was initially released in theaters, the film omitted four songs from the core setlist, and another four “surprise songs” filmed over the course of three nights (only two surprise songs made the theatrical cut).

For Swift’s birthday in December 2023, an updated cut of the film that included “Wildest Dreams,” “Long Live,” and “The Archer” was released in theaters.

Now, “Taylor’s Version” hits Disney+ with the three new songs from the birthday cut, plus the final original cut song, “Cardigan,” and the four omitted surprise songs from the acoustic sets: “Maroon,” “I Can See You,” “You Are in Love,” and “Death By A Thousand Cuts.”

How long is ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ movie?

Per Disney+ , “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” has a run time of 3 hours and 31 minutes. That’s about 40 minutes longer than the theatrical cut that ran 2 hours and 49 minutes.

Will ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ be on Netflix?

No, it will not be, but we understand why you might think it will be — “Reputation Stadium Tour” and “Miss Americana” were both released on Netflix, after all.

When Disney+ won the bidding war to stream “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” they did so by scoring exclusive rights to the concert film, meaning Disney+ is the only streamer that’ll carry it (and when you’re done, you can check out “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions,” also streaming exclusively at the House of Mouse).

Can I still catch Taylor Swift live on the Eras Tour?

You sure can ! Tickets are available on Vivid Seats for every remaining show of the tour, from the next leg, which picks up in Paris on May 9, to American gigs in Miami, New Orleans, and Indianapolis later this year.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse to kick off 2024 'Love Earth Tour' in San Diego; here are all the cities and dates

S AN DIEGO — Neil Young and his band, Crazy Horse, will launch their first tour together since 2019 with a pair of April performances in San Diego that are the only California dates on their itinerary. The North American concert trek will conclude May 23 in Chicago and includes stops in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto. all dates and cities appear below.

The tour-opening concerts are set for April 24 and 25 at San Diego State University's Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theater Theatre.

The upcoming "Love Earth Tour," as it is being billed, will coincide with the release of Young's new double-album with Crazy Horse, "F##in' Up." The album's title is the name of a song that first appeared on 1990's "Ragged Glory," the seventh of 20 albums Young and the band have made together thus far.

When purchasing their tickets for the tour, fans "can opt in to receive a physical CD" of the new double-album "for no additional cost," according to a press release issued Tuesday morning by Live Nation, the tour's promoter.

Young has led Crazy Horse, off and on, since 1969. His 2019 tour with the band was the first since rhythm guitarist and periodic keyboardist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro retired from the group in 2014.

Young, 78, has not toured with Crazy Horse in five years. But he did perform two special club shows with the band last fall at the Roxy in Los Angeles, followed by a date in Toronto at Rivoli, a bar that has a capacity of just 240 people.

All three of those gigs last fall featured Crazy Horse co-founders Billy Talbot on bass and Ralph Molina on drums, along with multi-instrumentalist Nils Lofgren, who came on board in 1970, and Micah Nelson, who is one of Willie Nelson's sons and performed with Young between 2015 and 2019 as a member of the band Promise of the Real.

Yong and Crazy Horse's upcoming new double-album features nine songs that were recorded at those three concerts last year. A limited edition color vinyl pressing will be released April 20 on national Record Store Day.

"In the spirit it's offered… (we) made this for the Horse lovers," Young said in a statement released Tuesday. "I can't stop it. The Horse is runnin'. What a ride we have. I don't want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share,"

It remains to be seen if Crazy Horse's lineup will change for the pending "Love Earth Tour." Lofgren is scheduled to resume touring as a longtime member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band on March 19 in Phoenix.

But the Springsteen tour will be on a break between April 22 and May 4. That means — at least in theory — Lofgren could play with Young and Crazy Horse for the first few dates of their spring tour before rejoining Springsteen for the May 5 launch of that band's 2024 European tour.

"Love Earth Tour" tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com .

A two-day presale for Neil Young Archives members starts Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT. A Live Nation presale begins at 10 a.m. Thursday.
