Russia: Visiting in 2023
Tourists and Business Travelers Visiting Russia in 2023. Here Is What You Will Find There
By Dr. James Pearce
I’ve been traveling to Russia for over a decade. I’ve got familial ties here and have lived in three different Russian cities . It’s a country impossible to understand without visiting, and its vastness and diversity offer something for everyone. But last February, everything changed.
After the war in Ukraine broke out in February 2022, Western boycotts were announced and airline and travel companies suspended their operations in Russia.
It was cut off from SWIFT, the international payment system, and most foreign bank cards no longer work here unless your bank or country uses Russia’s own payment system, MIR.
Overall, the number of foreign tourists in 2022 fell by 90%, and for the few still going to Russia, the trip is a costly headache. Most visitors in 2022 went for work, family reasons or to study.
Harming Reputations
Put simply, many westerners don’t want traveling to Russia to harm their reputation, personally or professionally. I argue that it shouldn’t. Travel should bring people together and not be based on political views.
Moreover, Russia is the world’s largest country spanning nine time zones and bordering fourteen other countries, from Norway to North Korea, across Europe, Central Asia and all the way to the Far East. We ignore and misunderstand it at our peril.
More Visitors from the Middle East and India to Russia
Although tourism from the West fell, travelers from the Middle East and India actually increased along with domestic tourism. China is also expected to post big numbers this year now that it has reopened.
Of course, this won’t make up for the fall in western tourists, and important to note is that few of these countries have condemned Russia’s actions or joined the sanctions. In fact, business is operating as normal – and in some instances strengthening and helping Russia to get around western sanctions.
Unlike before, one must now either fly to Russia from a third country (like Turkiye, UAE, or Armenia ), hop on a bus in Tallinn, or train from Helsinki, which both go to St. Petersburg. It’s also possible to travel by car from a neighboring country with an open border, like Georgia. Each option gives you the chance to explore another part of the world en route you wouldn’t otherwise see.
Russia by Bus
If going by bus, one usually takes you to the border, and another will pick you up on the Russian side. On average, the trip takes a total of 7-9 hours, not including border crossing and customs time. About half a dozen buses go daily, and it’s certainly the cheapest way in (as little as £35).
The trains are also relatively frequent, and the journey is shorter, at about 3 hours 30 mins. Tickets are upwards from 100 Euros, however. Flights will vary depending on the airline company, route you take, and location you book from. Turning your VPN on can help you get a cheaper ticket.
Last summer, one German couple chose the bus for their first trip to Russia. It might have seemed like an odd time to go, but not to them. ‘Why not?!’ they said. ‘It’s still a fascinating country. Our friends came recently, and had only good things to say.’
Many travelers report long lines and additional questions at the border. Some I spoke to were waiting for three hours, whereas others got through in fifteen minutes with no questions.
The only real danger here is missing your bus on the other side. Depending on the schedule, the drivers don’t always wait if you get stuck in a long line. In which case, you need to hope another bus is due soon or arrange alternative transport.
Flying through Turkiye to Russia
I chose to fly through Turkiye onto Yekaterinburg in the Ural region, where Tsar Nicholas II and his family were murdered by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
In place of the house where they were murdered now stands a Church in their honor. The flight was full both ways.
Istanbul is also significant in Russia’s history and the modern geopolitical climate. Almost 100 years ago, after the Bolsheviks came to power, hundreds of thousands left Russia through Constantinople never to return. As one journalist recently put it, Constantinople is where history and Russian exile begin.
Turkiye is Full of Russians
On almost every street corner one can hear the Russian language now. As one of the few places Russian citizens can still travel visa-free, hotels are frequently full of Russian guests. There are also plenty of Russian businesses also popping up and new employees or nomad workers in the city’s various cafes and bars.
When I landed in Yekaterinburg, I got through the border in maybe twenty minutes and answered only basic questions. It seems individual experiences are precisely that.
One change from before was the amount of cash I took with me. Most foreigners will have to take enough to last their trip, and either exchange it in a third country or one of a select few Russian banks.
You can still take up to $10,000 in cash, but a new law stipulates that you cannot take any foreign currency totaling more than $10,000 out of Russia.
If you have relatives or a Russian bank account, you can transfer money using Koronapay, Unistream, or Contact. Crypto is also used.
Russian Life Carries On
Despite the war in Ukraine, Russian life appears to be carrying on largely as normal. The appearance of pro-war propaganda is the only visible difference at first and even small towns have been affected. In Suzdal, an ancient and picturesque city adorned with wooden churches and monasteries northeast of Moscow, its many tourists can now buy matryoshka dolls with the letters Z, V and O – symbols of the military operation.
Storefronts that stood vacant after Western brands left are filling up again. Western products have been quickly replaced with domestic equivalents, and the agricultural industry has done extremely well in the last year.
Restaurants, bars, and theaters are all full as well, but what is immediately noticeable are prices; they have gone through the roof. Friends and relatives all speak of how much more expensive things are, although utility bills remain low.
In fact, most people I spoke to were worried about the rising costs, but generally said their standard of living has been unaffected.
One huge difference is the ability to travel abroad. It’s now much harder for Russians as visas are more expensive, have stricter requirements, and paying for them is more complicated. Many without the means are instead opting for domestic travel.
More Day Trips for Russians
City breaks and day trips to nearby historic towns and resorts along the Caspian Sea are becoming increasingly popular, and even Soviet sanatoriums are getting more visitors.
Agro-tourism has been gaining momentum in recent years, and so have ‘rest houses’ (cottages in the countryside for rent), but the prices are comparatively steep.
Another difference is accessing the internet. Every Russian person now has a VPN on their devices. Roskomnadzor , which regulates Russia’s internet, blocked many foreign websites and social media in response to the western sanctions.
Anyone traveling should download one before their departure, and there is no shortage of free options. They do, however, slow down your connection speed.
Despite a variety of boycotts, importing goods through third-country ‘hubs’ is easy. Tech products in particular are very sought after, and can be purchased via Turkiye, China, and Central Asia – as can clothes. However, movies and books are more complicated as releasing them without permission from the copyright holder is illegal.
Not because they don’t care or feel guilt. Rather, it is a coping mechanism. Public discussion of the war is practically prohibited and the ‘spreading of false information’ carries lengthy prison sentences.
For visitors, most trips to the country remain trouble free and the locals are only too happy to greet foreign tourists. Your trip also doesn’t need to be seen as an endorsement of the war or the Russian government, much the same as visiting any other authoritarian country wouldn’t.
The German couple also had advice for those unsure about traveling: ‘travel is like having children. There’s never a good time and always an excuse not to. If you wait for the right time, you’ll never do something.’

Good Day, my wife is Russian and I plan to go visit her family with her. May I ask what passport you traveled with? I have a USA passport and am only reading info put out by the US govt. about possible aggression towards Americans. Can you provide any first hand insight? Many Thanks.
Hi Richard, we have the same questions with my partner, I’m Russian, he is American, in 2021 in August we traveled together to Russia without any issues at all. He still has his 3years visa and now we are planning to travel to Russia together as well. I’ll highly appreciate if you tell me how would be your trip.

The procedure for obtaining an electronic visa was approved in the fall of 2020, and the system was planned to be launched in 2021. The visa is valid for 60 days from the date of issue, but you are allowed to stay in Russia with it for no more than 16 days. The list of states, whose citizens will be able to apply for the single electronic visa includes 52 countries. It will be possible to cross the border through any specially equipped checkpoint, regardless of the region, and to travel across the country. In January 2021 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Russia prepared a system of issuing a universal single-entry electronic visa for foreign citizens, designed for short stays, but its launch in practice will depend on the epidemic situation.

Russia Tours & Travel Guide
Russia Attractions & Landmarks Guide
If some countries pride themselves on their laidback culture, Russia is on the other end of the spectrum. For travelers, this means respecting the Russian way of doing things. From applying for a Russian tourist visa to toasting friends with shots of vodka, understanding how the process works will grant you access to a splendid history of tradition and beauty maintained by a rich national pride.
Although Russians look to their history as their strength, they see the future everywhere around them. Start your trip in Moscow to get a sense of the political and economic might of the country. History and modernity are contrasted here, as the Red Square and St. Basil’s Cathedral sit alongside one of the most beautiful shopping centers in the world, the GUM Department Store.
Once you’ve experienced the "Russian Russia," take the train to St. Petersburg to experience a Europeanized Russia in what some people call the “Venice of the North.”
Moscow: The Center of Power and Wealth
To understand the Russian transformation following the collapse of the Soviet Union, one need only look at the capital city of Moscow and specifically at Red Square. This is where the history and vibrant colors of St. Basil’s Cathedral, the imposing walls and towers of the Kremlin, and the GUM Department Store stand next to one another in a capitalist-socialist juxtaposition.
Take in the famed Russian ballet at Bolshoi Theatre (if you can get tickets) and make sure you venture into one of the city’s many cathedrals or churches. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior is an impressive structure to satisfy one’s cathedral fix and also symbolizes Russian reconstruction following the turmoil of the last century (the Bolshevik Revolution, World War II, and the fall of the Soviet Union).
If architecture is your thing, the Seven Sisters, buildings Stalin developed to show the world the strength of the Soviet people following World War II, are a sight to be seen. Among the most striking are Moscow State University and the Hotel Ukraine, now a Radisson hotel. Just in case you were wondering, you cannot tour the KGB Headquarters. It is, as one Russian woman stated, a “one-way ticket.”
Lastly, take in some shopping on Arbat Street or peruse the artwork at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art or one of the many subway stations on the Circle Line. These subway stops doubled as bomb shelters during World War II and most are filled with splendid art (mosaics, frescoes, and statues) that some museums would envy.
St. Petersburg: The Northern Capital
It is said that if Moscow is the head of Russia, then St. Petersburg is the heart. And upon arriving in St. Petersburg, you will see why. The former capital of Russia provides a stark contrast to Moscow with its European influenced design, Venetian-like canals and inlets, and a series of palaces that will make your jaw drop.
The Hermitage, founded by Catherine the Great in the 18th century, provides one of the most stunning collections of art in the world. Visually, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, Kazan Cathedral, and St. Isaac’s Cathedral should impress with both their grand scale and the intricacy of detail that went into their design.
If you’re traveling in summer, a visit to Peterhof Palace is a must and can be complemented with a stop at Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo. Both will redefine what opulence and grand summer homes mean. If you arrive from May through July, also prepare yourself for the White Lights, when daylight lasts nearly the entire day and the sun never fully sets. The never ending daytime encourages St. Petersburg’s citizens and visitors to continue dining, drinking, and living in the splendor of their high northerly latitude.
Can You Visit Siberia?

Existing as the longest railway in the world, the Trans-Siberian Railway connects Moscow to the eastern regions of Russia.

Russian Culture
Russian culture is one rich in customs and traditions dating back to the 1st millennium. Shaped from both Scandinavian and Asian influences, the unique and ethnic culture of Russia is portrayed strongly through many mediums:
1. Language - The Russian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet consisting of 33 letters. With over 144 million speakers in Eurasia, Russian is the largest native language in Europe, and the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages.
Russian is a very direct language with a simpler sentence structure than English. For instance, the Russian language does not use articles such as “a” and “the.” Make sure to learn some basic Russian phrases before your Russia trip! (Hello: privet, yes: da, no: nyet).
2. Religion - The most prominent religion in Russia is Russian Orthodox Christianity consisting of 43% of the population. Russian Orthodox runs deep in the country’s history, having been established as the state religion in 988 by Prince Vladimir of Kiev. In more recent times, Russia has become more religiously diverse.
Aside from non-believers or atheists, Muslims have the second largest religious community in Russia. Baptists, Seventh Day Adventists, Evangelicals, Roman Catholics, Krishnaites, Buddhists, Judaists, and Unified Evangelical Lutherans also make up smaller portions of the population.
3. Art - Russian art has played a major role in the country’s history dating back to 22,000 BCE with stone age period human sculptures. Ranging from the remarkable metal work in the Bronze and Iron age, to Byzantine mosaics and frescoes , Russian art pieces and influence can be found in museums and in everyday Russian life and architecture.
For instance, the fine art of the Petrine Art era can be seen in Saint Petersburg’s architecture and design, as issued by Russia's greatest Tsar, Peter the Great.
4. Ballet - First presented to Russian society by Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich, Russian Ballet was introduced to society in 1689 to adopt and eventually compete with Western culture and ideals. In modern times, Russia is the home of the worlds’ two most famous ballet companies—the Bolshoi (Moscow) and the Mariinsky; Kirov (Saint Petersburg). Russian ballet is unique in that it blends classicism and Russian folk dance to create the popular and whimsical dance form.
5. Literature - The roots of Russian literature can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Growing in importance during the Age of Enlightenment, Russian literature rose to a level of major importance and recognition in the 19th century. During the “Golden Era,” Russia produced some of the greatest world masterpieces, depicting the honesty and accuracy of the human experience as well as the artistic form of poetry.
Some of these literary pieces include works by Vasily Zhukovsky and his protégé, Alexander Pushkin, and novels by Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
6. Architecture - The colorful ornamented style of architecture we can see in great Russian structures today dates back to the 13th century during the Kievan Rus' war. This architecture style had strong influences from Byzantine architecture, including the iconic “onion dome,” which was introduced solely for aesthetic purposes.
These decorative domes are what comes to mind when one thinks about Russian architecture and can be found on structures such as the Church of the Transfiguration, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, St. Basil's Cathedral, and Church of the Savior on Blood.
7. Folk Music - Russian folk music is the traditional Russian music accompanied by Russian folk dance. The most popular Russian folk music and dances are the Barynya, a fast-paced dance with clapping and raising of the knees, and Russia’s oldest dance, The Khorovod, involving group singing and circle dancing.
8. Dress - Traditional Russian clothing was prominent until the 18th century when Peter the Great deemed that Russia adopt more western style clothing. After this time, traditional attire was found in rural areas or religious gatherings.
Traditional dress had centered around the basic “Rubakha,” or oversized shirt. This clothing item could be worn by rich and poor, men and women alike. The most prominent item of clothing for females were the sarafan, or long dress. The Shuba (fur coat) is a lasting form of Russian dress that has been modernized and implemented into Russian fashion today.
Top Souvenirs from Russia
Wondering what to bring back from your Russia adventure for your loved ones? Don’t fret, because there are a plethora of options!
1. Russian Nesting Dolls - The most commonly known Russian item is the Russian Matryoshka Doll (also referred to as the Russian nesting doll). These exquisite wooden dolls are culturally identifiable symbols of Russia.
They come in a set, where each doll can be pulled apart to reveal a smaller version inside. There are usually 6 or more dolls inside one another. The elegant paintings on these dolls typically present detailed depictions of traditional Russian women’s dress. This is a perfect souvenir to bring home to dazzle your loved ones with Russian culture.
2. Vodka - As is commonly perceived, Russians are known for their vodka. The smooth, high-quality vodka made in Russia is a guaranteed crowd pleaser for an adult-friendly souvenir option. Some of the best Russian vodka brands are Russian Standard Gold, Mamont Vodka, Beluga, and Moskovskaya Osobaya.
Make sure to check your country’s customs and border protection limits on alcohol that can be brought back with you from your Russia trip. In the U.S., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) limits alcohol transported by plane to 5 liters per person with alcohol content up to 140 proof (in a checked bag). 3. Amber - Commonly known as a beautiful honey-yellow gemstone, the translucent fossilized resin is a staple in Russian jewelry. A majority of all the amber in the world comes from the Kaliningrad region in the west of Russia. On tours in Saint Petersburg and Moscow, you will see a vast amount of amber gems and jewelry sold.
4. Gzhel Ceramics - Gzhel is a style of Russian ceramics which originates from the village of Gzhel nearby Moscow. Produced since 1802, this fine blue and white ceramic artwork makes for great tea set and kitchen item souvenirs.
5. Valenki - Valenki boots are traditional Russian winter footwear in the form of felt boots. These are traditionally calf or knee-length boots for women that came into fashion in the 1930’s and is re-emerging into contemporary Russian fashion today. You can also find Valenki boots in smaller more rural towns sold by local merchants for the use of keeping warm in the winter.
6. Khokhloma - Khokhloma painting is a type of Russian wood painting where wooden artiles, usually in the form of kitchenware, are beautifully decorated. They are handcrafted and painted deep red and golden colors. This technique is known as the national ornament of Russia which dates back to the 17th century. The paintings on these items usually include vivid leaf, flower, or berry patterns.
Are Russians Unfriendly?
Russian people tend to be more reserved than those from many western cultures. If you smile at someone on the street, chances are, they will not return the greeting. When meeting someone one-on-one, however, you will soon find that they are quite friendly and hospitable. Also, refrain from giving a “thumbs up” or “Okay” sign to a Russian person. In many instances, this can be considered an obscene gesture.
Travelers to Russia are in for a treat when it comes to the cuisine. Russian food is delicious and flavorful, consisting heavily of soups, porridges, fish, potatoes, dumplings, and pastas - There is something for everyone’s taste buds in Russia!
Here are some of the must try foods when you visit Russia:
Pelmeni - Pelmeni is the national dish of Russia and is a must try on your trip. These Russian meat-filled dumplings are prepared with a thin dough wrapping for a perfect taste.
Borscht - This popular Russian dish is a beet soup, with a deep red color. It is known for being a healthy, comfort food with a bit of a tangy twist.
Shchi - Shchi is a cabba ge soup, made with spinach greens and sauerkraut for an extra zing!
Solyanka - This thick meat and vegetable soup has a kick of both spice and sour. Infused with many vegetables and meats, this soup is filling and delicious.
Pirozhki - These Russian puff pastries can be prepared with a variety of fillings. Savory fillings include meat or vegetables, and savory fillings include fruit, jam, or cottage cheese.
Beef Stroganoff - This savory Russian dish consists of sautéed beef in a creamy mushroom smetana sauce (sour cream based). This dish has Russian origins dating back to the 19th century and has gained worldwide popularity.
Photography Tips for Traveling in Russia
Russia is filled with breathtaking views, architecture, and culture. These lend themselves to picture-perfect photo opportunities and destinations.
Of the two great cities on the European side of Russia: Moscow and surroundings (the ancient Golden Ring) and the beautiful Baltic city of Saint Petersburg, there are countless picturesque locations.
Some of the most popular and stunning photo spots in Moscow include:
1. The magnificent Red Square
2 The Kremlin
3. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
4. Moscow’s underground Metro
5. Moscow’s Central Core
6. The Museum of Cosmonautics
7. Tverskaya Street
When touring Saint Petersburg, don’t miss the prime photo opportunities at: the
1. Grand Peterhof Palace, the Hermitage Museum
2. St. Isaac's Cathedral
3. Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
4. St Nicholas Naval Cathedral
You will be in awe at the vibrant colors and unique architecture these structures have to offer. Be careful of photo regulations inside of these landmarks, however, and always make sure to check in with your tour guide or surrounding staff to see if photos are permitted indoors.
What to Wear When Traveling in Russia
Modern Russian attire is typically more conservative and lacks a vibrant array of colors. Jeans are very popular and tend to be worn in both summer and winter months, pairing with lighter clothes in the summer, and more layers in the winter.
You will notice many people wearing big coats in the winter months, and fur coats are also popular. In the two main metropolitan cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, you will notice that people tend to dress in less casual and more formal attire, as is the case in many big cities.
Make sure to bring your boots and warm layers in the winter, but be prepared to shed layers depending on your location and destination. For instance, those traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway will definitely need to bundle up outdoors but will be toasty warm inside of the train during transit.

Moscow Vacations, Tours & Travel Packages
On Russian vacations, Moscow is the capital of the country and serves as the major political, economic, cultural , and scientific centre. As well as the capital of the former Soviet Union, Moscow played a significant role in the development of Russia.
With a span of 1080 sq. km, Moscow features the Moskva River, which bends its way through the city, with the more prominent sites featured on the northern bank of the river. Moscow features various ring roads encircling the metropolis at various distances from the centre, where the Kremlin and Red Square are located.
An 860-year-old city, Moscow has many reminders of its imperial and Soviet past to be enjoyed on trips to Russia. Built between the 14th and 17th centuries, the Kremlin, which once served as the residence of the Great Prince as well as a religious centre, is currently the official residence of the President of Russia. The Kremlin is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with its neighbouring Red Square, which houses St. Basil’s Cathedral. As Moscow’s best-known landmark, the Kremlin represents the city’s political and historical power in Russia through the ages.
Moscow features many art museums, including the Pushkin Museum, The Institute of Russian Realist Art (IRRA), and the prominent Tretyakov Gallery, one of the world’s greatest which features a collection of mostly Russian art and icons.
Culturally rich, Moscow also offers Russian performance arts such as ballet, operatic music shows, and theatre. There are also two large circuses featured in Moscow.
Moscow offers visitors on Russian vacations plenty of shopping, cultural performances, a vibrant nightlife, and a glimpse into its history and beauty.

CHECK OUT WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT TRAVELLING WITH US
Lorena D'Souza: travelled with Discovery Russia in January this year and did their essential Russia tour of St Petersburg and Moscow and would absolutely recommend
I was a little apprehensive about travelling to Russia but really had nothing at all to worry about. Discovery Russia organised everything from pick ups to private tours, metro cards and provided a very useful guide to completing the visa processes.. We were NEVER left in a museum with an audio guide (which at times can be disengaging), but rather had a guide talk to us about the most popular and historically significant items/artworks. The tour guides were beyond knowledge, professional and always had our interests at heart. Furthermore, the company provides Russian SIM cards and our tour manager Tati was available literally available 24/7, always checking our transfer our tour guide had arrived. I can not recommend this company enough if you are thinking about travelling to Russia.

How to enter Russia by land as a tourist in 2023
A woman and a dog are seen on the road for the Verkhny Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border, 2022
EU and U.S. citizens have to obtain a visa to travel to Russia. To acquire it, it’s enough to schedule an appointment at your nearest Russian embassy or a Russian visa center in your country. The process of getting a visa takes approximately a week, but it’s best to clarify the time frames on the consulate’s website or in person, when submitting your documents. There are currently 25 countries whose citizens don’t require a visa; you can check here if your country is among them.
Helsinki (Finland) – St. Petersburg
St. Isaac S Cathedral in St. Petersburg
This is a convenient route for the citizens of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
The price of a bus trip is 5,390 rubles (approx. $60); for young people (from 13 to 18 years old or those who have an ISIC student card) it’s 4,850 rubles (approx. $54). You can depart both from a bus terminal or from Vantaa Airport.
The travel time is about eight hours; sometimes, it can take longer, due to waiting lines at the customs checkpoints. There are also routes from Helsinki to Petrozavodsk and Moscow, but, in any case, you still have to transfer in St. Petersburg.
There are only two bus companies that can take you from Helsinki to St. Petersburg – ‘Ecolines’ and ‘Lux Express’.
Kirkenes (Norway) - Murmansk
Murmansk at sunset
This route is suitable for those who live in the northern part of Norway or Sweden and want to travel to the north of Russia, not its center.
Unlike Helsinki-St. Petersburg buses, which depart every 2-3 hours until 15:00, with also night routes at 23:00, the Kirkenes-Murmansk route departs only once a day. The bus departs at noon from Høybuktmoen Airport and arrives at the ‘Polyarnye Zori’ hotel at 19:30.
It’s possible that the trip won’t be fully booked, but that doesn’t mean that the trip will get canceled. In this case, the bus usually gets swapped for a minivan or even a sedan car. The route is carried out by a few private carriers, whom you can contact in advance by email; you can find additional information on this website .
The price is 6,500 rubles, with no student discounts.
Tallinn (Estonia) – St. Petersburg
Moika River in St. Petersburg
There are only three companies that operate this route: ‘Lux Express’ and ‘Ecolines’, already familiar to you, as well as another one – ‘Baltic Shuttle’. The trip takes approximately seven hours if there will be no long waiting lines at the border.
You can also depart from the Estonian city of Narva; then the trip will only take three hours. Prices can vary – from 2,000 to 3,400 rubles (approx. $22-$38). There are also quite a lot of buses (as from Helsinki to St. Petersburg): at 00:30, 06:30, 07:00, 10:15, 11:15, 15:45, 16:45, 22:00 and 23:00.
Riga (Latvia) - Pskov
Pskov kremlin
This route is carried out only once a day. The bus departs at 19:30 and arrives at 01:30 in Pskov. The transport company is also private; the price is 3,950 rubles (approx. $44).
Pskov is a great city to begin your acquaintance with the history of Rus’ (Pskov is 903 years old). You can have a walk in the Finnish Park and look at all the towers of the local kremlin. Pskov is not as densely populated as St. Petersburg. Only slightly more than 210 thousand people live there. So, it’s a great place to enjoy the sounds of nature, even in the city center!
Vilnius (Lithuania) – Minsk (Belarus) - Moscow
Moscow's Ukraine hotel, one of Stalin's 'Seven Sisters'
The Vilnius-Minsk route is a record holder in terms of the number of buses. Buses from different companies depart every hour – from ‘Ecolines’ to private carriers. You can have a walk in Minsk or visit other Belarus cities, like Brest or Grodno, and then head further to Moscow.
The ‘Lastochka’ express and a regular night train goes to Moscow from Minsk. The first one will take you there in 7 hours, the other will take 10 hours. But, you can have a night’s rest on the longer route – the train cars are equipped with full-fledged sleeping places! The ‘Lastochka’ only has seats.
A ticket from Vilnius to Minsk will set you back 3,300 rubles (approx. $37). From Minsk to Moscow – from 1500 to 7000 rubles (approx. $17-$78).
(UPD on September 26: However, crossing the Belarus-Russia border by land is currently only permitted for people with Russian or Belarus citizenship. The only way to cross it is by flying from Minsk to Moscow or another Russian city)
From 2024, it will be possible to enter Belarus on a Russian visa, since the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus recently ratified the agreement on mutual visa recognition.
Gdańsk (Poland) - Kaliningrad
Kant Island in Kaliningrad
Kaliningrad is a unique city of Russia, since Kaliningrad Region is an exclave, a part of the territory of the country fully surrounded by the territory of another country.
Kaliningrad also differs from a regular Russian city by its architecture, still keeping the echoes of its European style. Until the USSR’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, Kaliningrad was the German city of Königsberg.
Buses from Gdańsk to Kaliningrad depart at 9:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00 and 18:00. The trip will take you only 3 hours and will cost you about 4,000 rubles (approx. $44). From Kaliningrad, you can reach Moscow on a train through Lithuania or on a plane. The train and ferry trips will take a day, a flight will take 2.5 hours – there are also regular flights through Khrabrovo Airport. From Kaliningrad, you can also reach St. Petersburg with the same transport and also by ferry (which also takes about a day).
Tbilisi (Georgia) - Vladikavkaz
Terek river in downtown Vladikavkaz
There are a lot of buses that operate this route, as well; buses depart every day at 00:00, 6:00, 07:25, 9:30, 10:00, 15:00, 17:00, 22:00 and 23:00. Be ready for a ride along hairpin turns.
The route from Tbilisi to Vladikavkaz is quite popular; there are also a lot of taxis or you can try to catch a ride. There are different chats in VK and Telegram where people look for passengers. It’s convenient if you don’t want to be bound by a specific time.
The 'Georgian Military Road'
But, this route is also infamous for its waiting lines at the border. The carriers’ website states that the trip will take anywhere from 5 to 9 hours. However, in reality, the trip can take the entire day or even longer – especially in summer, when a lot of people are returning from vacations.
The bus trip cost varies from 2,500 to 4,000 rubles (approx. $25-$44).
Tips for crossing land borders:
- Print out all your documents: your tickets there and back, your hotel address and your booking, your insurance and your bank statement. They can ask all of this from you at the border. And, even if they don’t, it’s better to have a paper copy of it all, since the internet doesn’t always work or your phone may run out of battery.
- Calculate your journey and the amount of things you need to take along. Sometimes, it’s better to take a backpack and only take necessary things in it, than to bring along a suitcase. During a border check, you often need to take all your bags with you. That takes a lot of time and energy. It’s all much faster with a simple backpack.
- Take some food and water; it’s especially relevant for the Tbilisi-Vladikavkaz route. Not every border control checkpoint has a grocery store; and some of the waiting lines take a lot of time.

New Delhi: Russian oil refined in a third country, such as India, is no longer a “product of Russia” from a sanctions perspective, a US treasury official said Thursday.
“The purpose [of the oil price cap] being limiting the revenue to Russia but not dictating that no trade can be done in Russian oil. I also want to specify that once Russian oil is refined, from a technical perspective it is no longer Russian oil,” said Anna Morris, the acting assistant secretary for terrorist financing and financial crime at the US department of treasury.
“If it is refined in a country and then sent forward, from a sanctions perspective that is an import from the country of purchase, it is not an import of Russia.”
Morris and her colleague Eric Van Nostrand, assistant secretary for economic policy, were speaking at a discussion organised by the Ananta Aspen Centre, a Delhi-based non-profit organisation.
In December 2022, the G7 countries imposed a price cap on purchases of Russian oil in response to Moscow’s “special operation” in Ukraine that began in February that year.
India, which was the top buyer of Russian oil in 2023, has been heavily criticised for its continued purchase of discounted oil from Moscow. Ukrainian foreign minister Dymtro Kuleba in 2022 had said that India’s purchases of discounted Russian oil were paid for by “Ukrainian blood.”
However, as the war has carried on, even Kyiv has come to accept India’s purchase of Russian oil, with Kuleba recently visiting New Delhi and meeting with his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar.
At the start of the discussion, Nostrand contended that the oil price cap introduced by the G7 countries in fact benefitted emerging economies like India.
“The price cap is designed to foster a market in which Russia supplies energy but at a heavily discounted price – maintaining the volume of energy supplied to global markets while minimising [Vladimir] Putin’s profits earned from it,” he said.
On her part, Morris said that the US has not asked India to reduce its purchase of Russian oil. She also made it clear that no Indian entity has been sanctioned for the purchase and refining of Russian crude oil.
Also Read: US defied own sanctions, imported Russian crude worth nearly $3.5-mn in Oct-Nov, claims report
The G7 price cap
In June 2022, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US and the European Union (EU) at the G7 leaders’ summit in Elmau, Germany considered the usage of import price caps on Russian oil as a measure to hurt Moscow’s energy revenues.
That year in September, the G7 countries agreed to introduce a price cap on Russian oil, which was capped at $60 a barrel and implemented in December.
The effects of the price cap saw India increase its purchases of Russian oil through 2023. New Delhi was the top buyer of Russian oil in 2023. It was able to negotiate with Moscow and purchase oil at prices lesser than the G7 cap.
External affairs minister Jaishankar in November 2023 asserted that New Delhi’s purchase of oil from Moscow helped soften global inflation.
“Just imagine for the moment had we not bought oil from Russia, global oil prices would have gone higher; because we would have gone into the same market, to the same suppliers that Europe would have done and frankly, as we discovered, Europe would have outpriced us,” Jaishankar is quoted as saying then.
“So, we’ve actually softened the oil markets and the gas markets through our purchase policies. We have, as a consequence, actually managed global inflation. So frankly, we should be thanked. I’m waiting for the thank you,” he had said.
