Looking for a high-quality pillow speaker? Here are the top 5.

Have you tried sleeping on your side with earbuds in your ears? It’s usually not very comfortable and they often fall out. If you enjoy listening to quiet music or white noise to lull you to sleep, a pillow speaker could be an excellent solution.

Perhaps you’ve tried sleep headbands with mixed results. They’re an improvement, but some people don’t want something wrapped around their head at night, especially if they’re prone to acne around the forehead.

We’ve discovered that headphone pillows are the way to go if you want to listen to music or soothing sounds while you fall asleep. We researched all the options, and in this article, we share our picks for best pillow speakers .

What Are Pillow Speakers?

They are devices that play sound and music while either underneath or attached to your pillow. They’re ideal for people who like to listen to something, but they prefer not to wear earbuds, headphones or a headband.

Some models designed to lay directly underneath your ear, while others are meant to be placed under the cushion. And still others contain a built-in speaker unit, so you get a pillow and a sound source all in one!

They work via a connecting cable that attaches to your smartphone or MP3 player, so you’ll need to have a phone with a headphone jack or an adapter. Some use batteries, while others rely on the smartphone or MP3 player for energy. New models are now coming to market that have pre-loaded soundtracks as well as the ability to set a timer.

HIGHLIGHTS:

If you’re looking for a simple and compact solution, the C. Crane Co SSV SoftSpeaker is a top choice. It’s small, portable, and the company made improvements in wire durability for the second generation.

Who would have thought that sleeping could be so rough on the wiring that connects the speaker to your smartphone? They say that it’s dirt and oil from people’s hands and face, but we’re wondering if drooling could potentially short out the system.

Regardless of the cause, the C. Crane model now has an extra durable and flexible outer cover made of rubber. If anything does happen to this device, you’ll be covered by a one-year warranty.

This model comes with a removable plush cover in any color you want as long as it’s blue. The cover is on the thicker side, which some people find uncomfortable. They ultimately end up removing the cover and sleep directly on the plastic speaker, which is also not the most relaxing.

This brand gets a “thumbs up” for durability, having a removable cover and its low price point. However, if you’re looking for something with a higher volume, you may want to try one of our other recommended brands.

Sangean PS-300

  • Option to use amplifier

sangean ps 300 product image

For those who prefer to sleep directly on the sound source without cover and would like a bit more volume, the Sangean PS-300 is a fantastic choice.

The slim, flat speaker is surprisingly large in diameter, allowing it to pack a lot of volume in a small area. In addition, there’s an option to turn on the amplifier. It does drain the battery quickly, but if you’re only using it to fall asleep, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Conair Sound Therapy Pillow

  • 2-in-1 solution
  • Smartphone or MP3 player compatible

conair sound therapy pillow product image

The Conair Sound Therapy Pillow is an all-in-one device with the speaker built directly into the unit. The cushion itself is a standard size, with a polyester filling and cotton outside.

The medium profile and the medium support level makes this close to a one-size-fits-all solution, but it’s not exactly a premium cushion or sound system. One of the coolest features of this design, other than having a speaker built-in to a pillow, is the fact that you can set a timer for 15, 30 or 60 minutes.

That way, you don’t have to listen to it all night. You can simply use this device to fall asleep and wake up to silence. This unit is also pre-loaded with ten soothing soundtracks to help you fall asleep.

And, of course, there’s still the option to plug it into a smartphone or MP3 player to listen to your entire music or podcast library. Even though this pillow isn’t the most luxurious, the fact that the whole unit is not much more than the price of most standalone speakers, we can’t argue with the value.

PillowSonic FM15 Under-Pillow Stereo

  • Washable cover
  • Universal audio jack

pillowsonic fm15 under pillow stereo product image

If you want better sound quality than a single speaker can provide, the PillowSonic FM Under-Pillow Stereo may be the best choice for your needs. The company has been making improvements to their original design since 2001, and the latest version has a non-slip foam cover that also enhances sound quality.

The inconvenient slipping and sliding that users of previous generations complained about has been eliminated. Other improvements include the ability to remove and wash the cover, as well as a pocket that allows you to place your smartphone in the cushion for easy storage.

This brand also has all the standard features, including in-line volume control and a universal audio jack. Additional bells and whistles include an extra-long extension cord and the absence of batteries. It’s on the larger side; however, most users found a way to accommodate the size comfortably.

Sound Oasis SP-101 Sleep

  • 2 speakers instead of 1
  • Great sound quality

sound oasis sp 101 sleep product image

This is another brand that has two audio outputs for the left and right ears. This brand has the same functionality as the other compact pillow speakers we reviewed like the C. Crane and the Sangean. The most notable difference is that the Sound Oasis has two speakers instead of one.

The benefit is that you can get separate frequencies in both ears, which is ideal for binaural beats, meditation, and ASMR. The downside is that they can slip and slide underneath you and shift around if you toss and turn frequently.

Users reported that the sound quality was better than expected and likely outperforms the C. Crane. If you’re on the fence between the two, consider whether you want a plush cover or you prefer a slightly louder volume.

Headphone Pillow Buying Considerations

You may prefer a plush cover surrounding your speaker, or perhaps you’d rather not having something muffling the sound. While a soft cover can be more comfortable, it’s going to be difficult to hear it if you place it under the pillow, too.

There’s also the option to buy a pillow that has the sound source already built into it. If you’d prefer not to fiddle with the positioning of the units, you’ll probably want to go the two-in-one route.

Sound Quality / Volume

You’re not exactly getting a BOSE-quality experience with these speakers. The internal components won’t be nearly as high end. Plus, the noise won’t be directly in your ear. Instead, it’ll be  around  your ear. Depending on how you sleep, the sound source might even have one or two layers of fabric and foam separating you.

Check for speakers that have an in-line volume control, so you can conveniently adjust the volume. Most should also allow sound to come from your smart device, so even if the controls are limited, you can crank up the volume from the music player.

Power Source / Cord Length

Some pillow speakers require batteries, and if you use added features like amplifiers or pre-loaded soundtracks, prepare to experience a fast drain. We tend to prefer models that allow you to use the power source from your smart device. It’s hard enough to remember to charge that thing, right?

The standard cord length is about six to six-and-a-half feet, though some models come with extensions. The default length is usually more than long enough to have plugged into your bedside table without straining.

Most models will be sleek, small and flat. That way, you’ll be able to place them underneath your head without feeling something poking you in the head or face. There are options to buy an all-in-one system where the pillow and speaker are one unit.

There’s also longer speakers that are approximately the width of your head. These include two speakers, so you can have a surround-sound experience that targets both your left and right ears.

Wireless Bluetooth

Surprisingly, there aren’t many options for wireless Bluetooth pillow speakers. One company that comes to mind in this arena is Dreampad. However, the price of this technology is still prohibitively high.

Different Types of Headphone Pillows

Flat under-pillow.

The simplest and sleekest solution is a design that is small, flat, and fits under your pillow. Most are designed to deliver sound adequately through layers of materials without disturbing your partner. They’re inexpensive, but not always reliable or durable.

Small Portable Speakers

This type of speaker allows for stronger sound and will often include a pocket that keeps your pillow and audio device nestled together for organization and travel. Often, they also work independently of a battery source, making them a great long-term value.

Memory Foam with Built-In Speaker

If you’re in the market for a new pillow, why not buy one that has a built-in speaker? They’re comparably priced, reasonably comfortable, and you get some white-noise included with your memory foam. What’s not to like?

Benefits of Using Pillow Speakers

Background noise.

If you’re someone who has a hard time turning off at the end of the day, you may welcome the distraction of some noise before bed. If you’re not a fan of earbuds and your partner prefers to sleep in quiet, a headphone pillow could be an excellent, relationship-saving compromise.

Tinnitus Masker

Tinnitus affects 15% of Americans or roughly 20 million people. It’s characterized by ringing in the ears or other non-existent sounds like buzzing, whistling, whooshing or hissing. If you’re trying to sleep, it can be beyond distracting, however music or background noise can help. This is where pillow speakers save the day!

Sound Therapy

People suffering from conditions like depression, stress, anxiety, pain, PTSD or insomnia can find relief by listening to soothing and meditative sounds at night. Popular options include nature soundscapes like oceans and forests, as well as guided meditation, ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, aka Tingles), and hypnosis.

Disadvantages of Using Pillow Speakers

Headphone pillows are notorious for breaking down before the one-year warranty period has passed. Luckily most companies have a warranty in place! It’s not that the speakers and wires are fragile, though. Reports show that it’s the sweat, dirt, oils and even drool that we secrete each night that wreaks havoc on the internal workings of the device and the wire components.

Sound Quality

The biggest disadvantage to keep in mind is that the sound is not likely to be stellar. If you’re using these to all asleep though, it’ll probably be more than adequate. It’s not like you need concert-quality sound for your audiobook. Unless it’s Dr. Seuss.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pillow Speakers

Can headphone pillows get connected to my tv.

Yes, as long as your television has a compatible audio jack, you’ll be able to connect it to your TV and listen and watch your favorite shows without disturbing your partner. You may need to get a speaker model that has an extension cord, though!

Are there radio types?

The best option is to plug the speaker into a radio. While some units come with pre-loaded soundtracks, they don’t have built-in radios.

Where can I buy these?

If you’re looking for the lowest price, the most selection, and the best customer service, Amazon is going to be your best bet. All of the brands mentioned in this review are available there, often lower than the manufacturer’s website and other competing online retailers.

Whether you want something sleek and subtle or a pillow with something built-in, there’s an option for everyone. And if BOSE ever decides to make a speaker that you can place underneath your pillow, we’ll let you know immediately.

7 Best Pillow Speakers for Your Soundly Sleep

If you have trouble sleeping because of outside noises at night or if having white noise or music can help you get to sleep faster, a pillow speaker is the perfect solution. Pillow speakers are music speakers that fit inside a standard bed pillow, so you can play music at a low volume close to your ears throughout the night. Pillow speakers are affordable and easy to use, making them an ideal choice for anyone who needs background noise at night.

In order to help you find the best pillow speaker, we considered a number of features of these devices. First, we looked at whether the speaker uses wireless or can connect wirelessly to a music player via Bluetooth. We also considered the length of the wires and the electrical cord, if it has those, to make sure it would reach for most beds. The size and material of the speaker are important considerations for comfort, since the speaker will be under your head. Of course, we also paid attention to sound quality and volume – it’s a speaker, after all.

We spent tens of hours researching the best pillow speakers, poring over manufacturers’ specifications and reading through hundreds of user reviews. The result is our list of the seven best pillow speakers for any sleeper, highlighted in the table below. Continue reading for detailed product reviews , complete with pros and cons. Our Buying Guide covers everything you need to know about choosing the right pillow speaker. Finally, we sum up our three overall favorite pillow speakers on the market today.

Best 7 Pillow Speakers Review 2024

Sound Oasis Amplified Pillow Speakers

Sound Oasis Amplified Pillow Speakers

  • Type: wired
  • Material: plastic
  • Cord length: 6 feet
  • Size: 5 × 0.8 × 2.5 inches

This robust set of pillow speakers from Sound Oasis was our favorite pillow speaker for sound quality and our overall Editor’s Choice. The two ultra-thin speakers have a built-in amplifier, which allows them to be significantly louder than most of the other pillow speakers we reviewed. On top of that, the in-line volume control knob actually allows you to fine tune the volume instead of just going from high to soundless in half a turn.

The design of the speakers is also innovative. Rather than use one large speaker with two sound outputs, these two speakers are actually connected only by a wire so you can customize how they’re placed around your head. There’s plenty of cord between them, so you don’t have to worry about trying to place them too far apart from one another.

Better yet, the construction of these speakers is wafer-thin compared to the other speakers we reviewed. Users found that it’s almost impossible to feel them underneath your pillow, although you can absolutely hear them.

The only thing we didn’t like about these speakers is the setup of the power cord. The micro-USB to USB cord is relatively small, so you’re probably going to want to get another, longer cord. The power adapter is also unnecessarily large, which takes up the space for two outlets when you could easily get an adapter that is half the size. If you replace the adapter, this pillow speaker is also quite easy to travel with.

  • Built-in amplifier for excellent volume
  • Two separate speakers connected by plenty of wire
  • Thin and comfortable under pillow
  • Micro-USB power cord is easily replaceable
  • Power cord is very short and should be replaced
  • Power adapter is unnecessarily large

Pyle PPSP18 Bluetooth Pillow Speaker

Pyle PPSP18 Bluetooth Pillow Speaker

  • Type: wireless
  • Material: soft fabric
  • Cord length: –
  • Size: 14.9 × 5.1 × 1 inches

This wireless pillow speaker from Pyle is the only Bluetooth speaker to make our list. It’s a little more expensive than some wired competitors, but not by much – and it’s half the price of the premium but wired Underpillow pillow speaker. Users found that connecting to your devices is simple, and the lack of wires means that you can charge your phone and play music from it all night long.

Better yet, you don’t even have to deal with turning on your phone or another audio player with this pillow speaker. It comes with a variety of pre-recorded nature sounds to help relax you to sleep, and one gigabyte of internal storage allows you to load a huge amount of music into the speaker. That’s particularly useful if you want to travel with this speaker.

Pyle also thought ahead with this speaker, including a headphone jack so you can listen to music through headphones without disturbing your partner. Although most users didn’t actually need this feature – it somewhat defeats the purpose of having a pillow speaker – it’s nice that it’s there all the same. In addition, a wired remote control allows you to skip tracks and adjust the volume without changing your sleeping position.

The only real downside to this speaker is that it doesn’t feature a built-in timer. Given everything else it offers, that would have been a nice addition. Still, if you use a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone to play music, you may be able to set a timer on your phone.

  • Inexpensive wireless pillow speaker
  • Includes one gigabyte of memory for music storage
  • Includes headphone jack
  • Wired volume and music control
  • No built-in timer

C Crane Company PS2 SoftSpeaker Pillow Speaker

C Crane Company PS2 SoftSpeaker Pillow Speaker

  • Material: soft, padded foam cover
  • Cord length: 6.5 feet
  • Size: 4 × 3 × 4 inches

This single speaker from C Crane Company is a good option for sleepers who want more volume. The speaker is loud enough to hear through the thick foam padded cover as well as through your pillow. Better yet, it’s not so loud that your partner on the other side of the bed will be disturbed by it.

It’s worth nothing that C Crane Company makes versions of this speaker with and without volume control knobs. Users actually tended to prefer the version without a volume control, since they found the volume control was not very effective at fine-tuning the volume and mostly got in the way when trying to sleep.

One major downside to this speaker is that it’s a single speaker, rather than a dual speaker with a surround sound effect. That means that if you put your head to the pillow, you’ll only be able to hear sound in one ear. If you’re trying to avoid disturbance from outside noises, this speaker probably isn’t right for you – you’ll still be able to hear that noise through your other ear.

The padded foam cover that the speaker comes with is also contentious among users. Some people felt that it was extremely comfortable thanks to the padding, while others felt that the padding forces the speaker to create an uncomfortable lump underneath your pillow. Thankfully, it’s easy to remove the padding if you find this suits you better and the speaker inside is relatively flat.

  • Louder volume than other speakers
  • Inexpensive
  • Available with or without volume control
  • Comfortable with or without foam padding (easily removable)
  • Single speaker, no surround sound

UnderPillow SleepSound Speaker

UnderPillow SleepSound Speaker

  • Material: soft fabric cover
  • Cord length: not specified
  • Size: 17.5 × 8 × 1.4 inches

This premium speaker from Underpillow is the ideal choice for sleepers who want a pillow speaker that won’t get in their way. The speaker features an ultra-thin construction that allows it to go underneath your pillow without creating pressure points or raising your neck too much. On top of that, it’s covered in a soft fabric cover that feels comfy against your arms.

Users were mixed on the sound quality and volume of this speaker. Some felt it was too loud, while others thought it wasn’t loud enough. Either way, the volume range isn’t particularly wide for a pillow speaker. You can control the volume with a small dial pad connected to the speaker, which also allows you to skip tracks on your audio player device.

The speaker is shaped for surround sound, which is a nice touch for immersing yourself in sound. Users liked the 60 minutes of pre-recorded nature sounds that the speaker comes with, and it’s nice that you can store up to 30 minutes of your own music on the speaker as well. Perhaps the best feature of this speaker is a 60-minute timer that gradually lowers the volume of the music and turns the speaker off after you’ve fallen asleep.

Keep in mind that your audio device will need to connect to a 3.5 mm audio input cable to use this speaker with custom music. In addition, the power cord is somewhat short so you may need an extension cord.

  • 60-minute timer
  • Surround sound design
  • Comes with 60 minutes of pre-recorded sounds
  • Ultra-thin construction with fabric cover
  • Volume control is not very wide ranging
  • Power cord is short

ASIILOVI Bluetooth Pillow Speaker

ASIILOVI Bluetooth Pillow Speaker

  • Type: Bluetooth
  • Material: soft, padded foam
  • Cord length: no cord

The Wireless Bluetooth V5.0 Tech is a great way to pair your smartphone, tablet, or any Bluetooth-enabled device. With its 45-foot wireless range, ultralow-power design, and built-in rechargeable LiPO battery, this Bluetooth module provides up to 10 hours of playing time or 12 hours of talking time with a 100-hour standby time.

Additionally, its 12.5mm stereo speaker magnets and microphone deliver clear and high-quality digital sound, making it perfect for listening to music or taking calls. The simple panel has 3-prompt buttons and an LED indicator light, allowing you to control the volume, skip songs, answer calls and control Siri or Google Voice with ease. Plus, the built-in hands-free microphone makes it easy to stay connected while on the go.

Unfortunately, this speaker lacks some helpful features like a built-in timer. But, for a price of just $15, it’s hard to complain about this device.

  • Speaker goes on top of the pillow
  • Low volume doesn’t disturb your partner
  • Can be firm for some people to sleep on

Marpac Pillow Speaker 9610

Marpac Pillow Speaker 9610

  • Cord length: 4 feet

This pillow speaker set from Marpac is a good compromise between sound quality and budget. The main advantage to the speaker system is that the two speakers are connected by a wire, allowing you to place them virtually anywhere around your bed. The thin construction is relatively out of the way when placed under your pillow, so you don’t have to worry about discomfort.

That said, the sound quality on these speakers is something that users were less than thrilled with. When playing music, the distortion is noticeable – although this matters less if you are playing white noise, nature sounds, or audiobooks. Users also noted that the speakers are not designated as left and right, which can further impact sound quality if you guess incorrectly.

In addition, users complained that the volume is quite low on these speakers. Particularly if you have a thick, firm pillow, like a foam pillow, it can be difficult to hear your music even with the volume turned all the way up. The in-line volume control offers a little bit of fine tuning, but most people reported leaving it all the way turned up.

The cord length is also quite short, at just four feet long. That means you’ll definitely need either a bedside table or to place your music player underneath your pillow with the speakers.

All that said, the versatility of having separate speakers is a major selling point for many sleepers. This allows you to fully customize your surround sound effect as well as to avoid disturbing your partner.

  • Speakers connected by a wire
  • Thin construction
  • Very low volume
  • Short auxiliary cable
  • Speakers not labeled left and right
  • Poor sound quality

Sangean PS-100 Portable Pillow Speaker

Sangean PS-100 Portable Pillow Speaker

  • Cord length: 5 feet
  • Size: 7.75 × 4.75 × 2.5 inches

This budget-friendly speaker from Sangean is the perfect choice for sleepers looking to try out a pillow speaker for the first time. It is uncovered hard plastic, so you’ll want to put it underneath a relatively thick pillow. Otherwise, users did not find it to be uncomfortable at all against their head while sleeping.

The volume on this speaker is extremely low, which is good if you are trying to keep the noise from disturbing your partner but not great if you have trouble actually hearing the sound. Part of the reason for this is that the speaker is powered from your audio device – it doesn’t require batteries – so the sound power is limited. There’s no in-line volume knob on this pillow speaker, but rather a single Hi/Lo/Off switch on the side of the unit.

One major complaint that users have with this pillow speaker is durability. In many cases, the input wire detaches where it meets the hard plastic shell of the speaker, effectively rendering it useless. However, at just $11, it’s not too much of a loss if this speaker breaks after just a year or so of use.

The other issue, albeit a minor one, is that the cord on this speaker is somewhat short at just five feet. If you don’t have a table next to your bed, you may need to sleep with your audio device under your pillow as well.

  • Hi/Lo/Off switch rather than volume knob
  • No batteries or power cord required
  • Durability issues with input wiring
  • Auxiliary cable is short
  • Things to Consider

Now that you’ve learned more about our seven favorite pillow speakers on the market today, how do you choose between them to get the speaker that’s right for you? Our Buying Guide will cover everything you need to know about choosing a pillow speaker as well as answer some common questions that first-time users have.

Features to consider while choosing pillow speaker

A pillow speaker may seem like a simple device, but there’s actually a lot that goes into these speakers. In order to help you find the perfect pillow speaker, we’ll take a look at some of the most important features that distinguish different models.

  • Sound quality

7 Best Pillow Speakers for Your Soundly Sleep

Unfortunately, there’s no simple number you can look at to determine if a speaker offers good sound quality. The best way to find the best pillow speaker for sound quality is to check what users have to say about that device.

More important than sound quality is volume control. Ideally, your speaker is loud enough that you can hear it clearly, but not so loud that even your partner next to you in bed can hear it. Look for pillow speakers that have easily adjustable in-line volume controls, since this allows you to easily change the volume without even changing your sleeping position.

Finally, consider whether the pillow speaker is a single speaker or two speakers. All of the speakers we reviewed except for the C Crane Company and Sangean speakers have two speakers built into the device. Having two speakers is nice because it allows you to put one on either side of your head, creating a surround sound experience. This is particularly helpful if you are playing white noise or nature sounds, since the surround sound helps to fully immerse you in the noise.

Pillow speakers are a little behind the times when it comes to making the transition to wireless Bluetooth connectivity. While some speakers like the models from Pyle can connect wirelessly to your music playing device, all of the other speakers we reviewed actually connect with wires.

The main reason for this is that it allows pillow speakers to be less expensive, and most people don’t mind having a wire leading out of their pillow when they sleep. However, keep in mind that your smartphone or other device will need to have a headphone jack to be compatible.

It’s also important to think about the power cord for your pillow speaker. It needs to be long enough to reach an electrical outlet near your bed. Otherwise, you’ll need to add an extension cord to your pillow speaker setup.

7 Best Pillow Speakers for Your Soundly Sleep

On the other hand, speakers that can be used next to or on top of your pillow, like the devices from Underpillow and Pillow Player, often feature a soft fabric cover to help with comfort against your head. Having the cover on these speakers can also reduce pressure points if you put them underneath your pillow.

Pillow speakers are relatively inexpensive devices, which makes them a great solution for anyone who likes some sound to help them get to sleep. The premium pillow speaker from Underpillow costs around $50, while our budget pick from Sangean costs just over $10. There’s a pillow speaker to match any budget in between, as well, including our editor’s choice speaker from Sound Oasis .

Make sure to check whether your pillow speaker comes with a warranty. These devices, while inexpensive, are notorious for breaking down after only short periods of use.

Unfortunately, this breakdown can be hard to avoid. Dirt, oil, sweat, and other grime gets on your pillow and speakers while you’re sleeping, and this can be hard to prevent. Cleaning your speakers occasionally may slow the process of damaging them, but the best solution is to have a warranty to protect against premature failure.

  • Do pillow speakers have timers?
  • Is any difference in sound quality between plastic speakers and speakers covered with fabric?
  • Can pillow speakers record any sounds?
  • Our verdict

Our three overall favorite pillow speakers on the market today are the Sound Oasis Amplified Pillow Speaker , the Pyle PPSP18 Bluetooth Pillow Speaker , and the C Crane Company PS2 Pillow Speaker.

The C Crane Company speaker is extremely compact and can be used with or without the thick foam padding depending on your preference. While it was a favorite among users, note that it’s the only mono speaker we reviewed.

The Pyle speaker is the best wireless pillow speaker available and costs little more than a comparable wired speaker. It’s unique in that it comes with one gigabyte of storage space so you can easily use it without an audio player in most cases.

We feel the Sound Oasis speaker is the best pillow speaker for most sleepers because it offers excellent sound quality and comfort at an affordable price. The built-in amplifier allows it to be louder than most other pillow speakers, and users loved that the stereo speakers can be separated to customize your surround sound experience.

Best inflatable: AirComfy Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow -  See at Amazon The AirComfy travel pillow combines comfort with versatility and ease of use by inflating in seconds, providing maximum comfort in any position, and folding into a compact carrying case.

Best for extra neck support: Trtl Pillow Plus - See at Amazon The Trtl Plus travel pillow offers a unique design that's customizable and offers an incredible amount of support — all while still compact enough to slide into a backpack or laptop case.

Best overall: Cushion Lab Ergonomic Travel Neck Pillow

travel pillow with stereo speakers

The Cushion Lab Ergonomic travel pillow is a bit large once unfurled, but rolls up so compactly into its handy carrying case that I barely even noticed when it was attached to one of my bags. Unfurling it from its case was no fuss and took less than 30 seconds.

Though at first glance this pillow appears to be a fairly standard travel neck pillow with the classic U-shape design,  several key differences help set it apart.

First, the extra dense memory foam is incredibly comfortable. The material of the pillow is super soft and the memory foam made it feel as if I was truly sinking into the pillow instead of just resting my head on top of it.

There's also asymmetrical support with more cushioning on one side more than the other. This is different from the standard, symmetrical neck pillows and meant I had added support for leaning my head.

An adjustable strap also tightens and loosens the pillow's grip to the wearer's desire, another differentiating factor from other travel pillows that increases its appeal and versatility.

When I was done with it, wrapping up the pillow was as simple as wrapping an umbrella.

However, keep in mind this pillow is great primarily for upright sleeping. Though I found it gave me nice neck support, the pillow really can't be propped up against the cabin wall and it won't lend support when laying down across seats either.

Best inflatable: AirComfy Ease Inflatable Travel Pillow

travel pillow with stereo speakers

The AirComfy travel pillow comes in a carrying case that includes a carabiner, which makes it easily attachable to a backpack or a carry-on.

Though it didn't look like much at first, a few breaths and about 30 seconds was all it took to inflate the pillow to its proper state. The pillow did a great job of bridging the gap between the headrest of my seat and my head and the soft velvet material was incredibly comfortable.

A strap on the pillow allowed me to affix it to my seat so I could move around without it slipping or falling at all. Adjusting the firmness of the pillow was also just a matter of letting some air out or adding a few extra blows.

An overnight flight was when the pillow really stood out, since I was constantly moving around and adjusting my sleeping position over the six-hour-long flying time. The pillow provided the same amount of comfort regardless of the position I was in.

And, when I had a whole row to myself, the pillow proved even more useful since I could prop it on the armrest when laying down flat. That's something I wouldn't have been able to do with the U-shaped neck pillows. The pillow was equally comfortable propped up against the cabin wall when sitting in the window seat, and I was extremely impressed with its constant versatility.

Once the flight was over, it took seconds to deflate the bag and store it with no fuss.

Best for extra neck support: Trtl Pillow Plus

travel pillow with stereo speakers

Like several of the other pillows I tested, this travel pillow also came in a carrying case along with a carabiner that could be used to attach it to a bag. But the case really didn't seem necessary as the pillow was compact and thin enough to slide in a backpack, purse, or even a laptop case.

Its compact size also made it especially easy to unfurl when it was time to use. There was no major assembly required and I had it out of my bag and around my neck in less than 30 seconds. All I had to do was pick a spot on my neck for the pillow to rest and then wrap a cloth around the rest of my neck to keep it in place.

The pillow had an incredibly sturdy feel with plenty of neck support, making it a good choice for head bobbers, and I didn't feel that I had to keep pressure on it to keep it in place.

The cloth that wraps around the pillow is incredibly soft and was comfortable to wear around my head for prolonged periods of time. Adjusting the height of the pillow was as easy as turning a knob. The cloth could also be loosened and tightened as desired for a custom fit.

The only problem I had with the pillow is that it only offered support on one side. I couldn't really move my head much because then I'd have no support. This pillow can also only be used for upright sleeping. I couldn't lay down with this pillow or prop it up against the cabin wall.

That said, it does offer excellent neck support, which can be a serious plus for those who tend to choose aisle seats or have a habit of their head falling forward when sleeping on planes.

For this guide, I tested seven pillows on flights across the Western Hemisphere for three months.

I tested the pillows on flights in my travels for work and pleasure.  The types of flights I took ranged from long-haul international Delta Air Lines flights to short-haul Frontier Airlines flights.

I tested each pillow in a variety of sleeping positions, including upright and in window seats to determine how the pillows performed in tight spaces and if they could be used against the airplane cabin wall. On overnight flights when I had the entire row open, I also tested the pillow's comfort levels when laying fully flat.

While the best travel pillow for you will depend on your specific preferences, desired sleep position, and usual airplane seat, there are a few constants I looked for across all the travel pillows I tested. These are similar qualities anyone should consider when looking for a solid travel pillow and include:

Packability: As a no-fuss economy flyer, I sought out packability the most as I was often using a backpack or overnight bag for most of my trips. Baggage allowance is minimal for economy flyers so I wanted a pillow that could either fit snugly in a bag or easily be attached to one of my bags.

Comfort: How comfortable the pillows were was the other main factor. Quality of sleep is just as important as the duration of sleep, and if a pillow isn't comfortable, it simply isn't serving its purpose.

Simplicity: Flying in economy is already tight quarters and that's compacted when in a crowded row. I was looking for pillows that I could easy assemble and disassemble while at my seat, without disturbing my neighbors.

Staying power: A travel pillow is only good if it stays connected to one's head. I sought out pillows that wouldn't fall if I moved my head during my sleep and ones that wouldn't fall off of my neck.

Sitting upright for hours on end can be incredibly uncomfortable, but a travel pillow can make your trip a lot more tolerable. Whether embarking on a red-eye flight or taking the train, the best travel pillows will be comfy, supportive, and portable.

We tested 24 travel pillows based on traits like comfort, durability, portability, and quality. We narrowed down the best options while using the accessory for road trips, long-haul flights, and train rides. Our top pick for the best travel pillow overall is Cabeau The Neck's Evolution S3. We love that this pillow folded down into its own, compact carrying case and comes with a washable cover to keep it fresh between trips. We also found the best pillow choices for travelers who like a softer or firmer pillow along with styles that are perfect for middle seats and budget-conscious travelers, too.

Best Overall

Cabeau tne s3 travel pillow.

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.8 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The seat strap system keeps the pillow in place and prevents painful neck cramps.

It can feel stiff at first and takes some getting used to.

This soft and supportive travel pillow is the perfect accessory for long trips, whether you're in the car or in the air. The pillow itself can attach to any headrest with adjustable straps to prevent your head from sagging or falling into uncomfortable positions while sleeping. There's also an adjustable chin strap for added comfort and security. The pillow's exterior fabric is soft and cozy, yet breathable so you don't feel too hot or constricted although it can take some time to find your perfect position.

We also love that the pillow case is machine washable. We tested this pillow on a long international trip where it really got tossed around on planes, trains, and buses, so it felt great to wash the cover at the end of the trip, making it good as new. Despite its fairly large size, the pillow is also quite portable as it rolls up into a compact carrying case that can attach to a bag's exterior or slip into larger backpacks and totes.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Cushion lab ergonomic travel neck pillow.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that allows travelers to adjust the amount of support needed.

It can have a snug fit.

The Cushion Lab Ergonomic Travel Neck Pillow can make your trip much more comfortable, whether in the middle seat of a plane or a car. With an ergonomic design, one side of the pillow is larger than the other to support the chin if your head tilts while sleeping, and the back has a cushion that is contoured to keep the head in an upright position. During testing, the neck pillow provided a comfortable rest for the chin, and we didn’t feel too hot while wearing it. Although the cushion fits snugly around the neck, it didn’t take long to get used to it, and we could nap comfortably during a train and car ride. The buckled strap was easy to adjust, and we liked having the ability to spin the pillow around to use the asymmetrical sides and back to find the most comfortable position for sleeping in the window and middle seats. With a soft, recycled polyester exterior and Cushion Lab’s extra-dense memory foam, the quality of the travel pillow is luxurious and sturdy, and it folds into a small ball to fit inside a carrying bag that can clip onto a backpack or a suitcase.

Best budget, cloudz microbead travel neck pillow.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 4 /5

It molds to the shape of your neck to prevent bobbing.

The cover can't be removed and washed.

The Cloudz Microbead Travel Neck Pillow is a no-frills option that offers generous neck support for a budget-friendly price. It is filled with tiny microbeads that quickly mold to the shape of your neck and prevent your head from bobbing around while sleeping. We appreciated its lightweight but sturdy feel, and that there were no signs of damage after using the neck pillow or when clipping it onto a suitcase to transport. Although the cover can’t be removed, we noted that the fabric is easy to touch up with instructions to spot clean the surface as necessary. Cozy and breathable, the travel pillow did a solid job of regulating temperature and keeping the neck warm during cold flights and cool during hot flights.

The Details: Polyester, microbeads | No portable case | Machine-washable

Best Splurge

Ostrich pillow go neck pillow.

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that can accommodate neck, chin, and head support preferences.

It might warm your neck if you run hot while sleeping.

The Ostrich Pillow Go Neck Pillow feels like sleeping on a cloud. This travel pillow provided the perfect amount of neck support and comfort, allowing us to get more rest on a flight than usual. The plush memory foam filling and asymmetric design can be easily adjusted to support the neck, chin, or head with the taller or shorter sides. The materials appear high-quality and luxurious, and it rolls up to fit in a compact drawstring sack. The pillow holds its shape despite being in the bag for long periods, which leads us to believe that it will hold up well with prolonged use. The pillow cover is removable and can be machine-washed, but we air-dried it to ensure it didn’t shrink (and had no issues putting it back on the pillow). A must-have for those with higher budgets, this pillow allowed for better sleep and more comfort on flights.

Best Cooling

Cabeau evolution cool pillow.

  • Quality 4.5 /5

The mesh air vents make the pillow breathable.

It’s made of firm memory foam.

The Cabeau Evolution Cool Pillow is a great pick for travelers that get warm quickly. The pillow is designed to prevent heat from building up as you wear it as mesh vents in between two layers of cushiony memory foam filter in the air. We liked the breathability feature and moisture-wicking fabric, and said we didn’t feel overheated while using it on an airplane or road trip. While it took a moment to get situated, once the pillow was in the most comfortable position, it was extremely supportive and firm without feeling too hard. We especially liked the portability of the already lightweight pillow (thanks to its durable-feeling carrying case), and the mesh pocket for storing small accessories. This pillow quickly unfolds to its original shape despite being rolled up and going in and out of the compact case as well.

The Details: Memory foam | Portable case | Machine-washable

Best Sustainable

Therm-a-rest compressible pillow.

  • Portability 4 /5

It’s made of recycled and upcycled materials that are comfortable and breathable.

It doesn’t offer neck support like a regular travel pillow.

If you’re not a fan of the typical U-shaped travel pillow, the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is a great alternative. It resembles the rectangular style of a traditional pillow, and it compresses down to be easily transported whether you’re flying or camping. The recycled polyester fabric is light and breathable, and the foam filling — made from extra polyurethane foam left over after producing REI’s sleeping pads — provides a soft cushion for your head. We also loved how durable it is, especially for various uses like camping, flying, or taking a nap at home. While the pillow doesn’t come with a carrying bag, it has a toggle strap to compress it into a smaller size and a built-in cover that you fold the pillow into for protection while traveling.

The Details: Recycled polyester, polyurethane foam fill | No portable case | Machine-washable

Best for Window Seats

J-pillow chin-supporting neck pillow.

It’s easy and intuitive to use for resting your chin and head.

It could be more supportive when you’re leaning against a window.

The J-Pillow Chin-supporting Neck Pillow has a J-shape that wraps around the neck to support the chin and the front, back, and one side of the head. Despite the different design than a typical U-shaped travel pillow, it is easy to use and fits securely while sleeping or resting during travels. The pillow comes with a compact case that can be attached to a piece of luggage to make traveling with it effortless. After being folded up in the carrying case for some time, the J-shape didn’t falter, and remained supportive and soft. We think the J-Pillow is ideal for any type of traveler since it's very portable and lightweight.

Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow

  • Durability 4.5 /5

It’s supportive without feeling too stiff.

This would be best for travelers who know they prefer a firm travel pillow.

We love the comfortable and supportive Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow for travelers that like a firmer neck pillow. The buckle strap adjusts accordingly to fit around your neck, and offers 360-degree support on the chin, jaw, and back. We loved how you can lean back in the car or plane, and the back of the neck doesn't fall backward. In addition to having exceptional support, the Aeris travel pillow folds into a small ball and easily fits into the circular carrying case that can clip onto a backpack or suitcase without being a noticeable nuisance. The holder also has a frontal slip pocket for storing the earplugs and eye mask that are included with the travel pillow. After a trip, the carrying case can be unzipped and machine-washed, although we recommend air-drying it to prevent any possibility of shrinkage.

The Details: Velour, polyester, memory foam | Portable case | Machine-washable

Best Side Support

Cabeau evolution s3 travel pillow.

  • Durability 4 /5

This pillow is soft and durable.

The suede-like outer material has a tendency to pick up lint.

This travel pillow was designed to keep your head and neck supported for even the longest of flights. Not only is the semicircular pillow adjustable, so you can get the shape perfect for you, it also features and adjustable seat strap to prevent your head from dropping while you rest. Right out of the box, we loved the high-quality of the memory foam, which makes it supportive and soft, and the cover material feels great against the skin. It gives users a great balance of softness and support. To keep your pillow protected and prevent any risk that it will end up getting dragged across the airport floor, this also comes with a compact carrying case that compresses down to fit into carry-on luggage.

The Details: Polyester, microsuede, memory foam | Portable case | Machine-washable

Gingerlily Silk Travel Pillow

  • Portability 3 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

To protect your hair and skin throughout your travels, a silk pillow is the way to go.

It's 12 x 16 inches, so make sure you have plenty of room to pack it.

For those who love sleeping on silk pillowcases at home, this mini version for travel is an absolute must. Yes, it can be pricey to buy silk travel accessories , but it's also expensive to ruin a blowout and have to find a salon on vacation (and there's no price to be put on fresh, clean skin). This silk pillow is smaller than a standard pillow at 12 inches wide and 16 inches long, but can still be used in bed in a pinch and is perfect for trains, planes, and cars — just make sure you have the space in your carry-on bag. After using this pillow for multiple long trips, it shows no signs of loose stitches, fraying, or pilling. Rather, the pillow feels like it will last without ever going limp or flat.

Other Travel Pillows We Liked

While we were able to narrow down the travel pillows for our best list, there were some that almost made the cut but didn’t due to a few weaknesses noted by our testers.

Hest Pillow : This standard pillow is on the softer side yet still provides support and comfort while laying on it, but the fabric is slightly itchy, and it’s bulky to carry around, even when compressed.

Gingerlily Silk Travel Neck Pillow : We love that this pillow is high-quality and made with luxurious material, but it doesn't come with a carrying case, which we think you would need to keep this pillow protected.

Cabeau Evolution Classic Travel Neck Pillow : While the memory foam is the perfect balance of firm and soft, we found this pillow to be just a bit too bulky for frequent travel.

Travel + Leisure / Daniela Galvez

We sent out 24 travel pillows to our testing experts to use during their upcoming trips. To thoughtfully curate this list, we researched popular options to fit a variety of comfort preferences, including pillows made of memory foam and microbeads, and tested different shapes, too.

On a scale of one to five, our testers rated the pillows based on comfort, quality, durability, and portability. The pillows with the best comfort scores met or exceeded our expectations for special features, including cooling, firmness, softness, or other claims by the manufacturer. Our testers used the pillows for several hours at a time, if not longer, to see how comfy they were while sleeping, reading, or watching a movie while traveling. We asked our testers to note if they were able to sleep with the pillow on, if it caused any neck pain or discomfort, and how warm or cool the pillow felt around the neck. To check for quality and durability, our testers examined the build of the pillow to feel how well-made it appeared. After using the pillows during trips, they judged durability based on their functionality after several uses. The pillows with the highest score for portability were able to compress down into carrying bags that allow travelers to transport the pillow with exceptional ease. The best pillows also kept their shape after being tucked away into a case and always sprang back into their original form with no signs of damage.

Tips for Buying a Travel Pillow

Prioritize neck support.

When it comes to sleeping in planes, trains, or cars, you should focus on your neck and head support. When your head drops during sleep, it restricts your breathing and can leave you with a sore neck or even a headache. Your travel pillow should be supportive enough that your neck stays securely upright without feeling as though you're being squeezed.

Portability is key

Whether you pack light or over-pack, a travel pillow that compacts into a small carrying case is ideal for bringing along on trips. Of course, some travel pillows don’t compress, but they should still be easy to clip onto a suitcase and not bump into too many things if you’re traversing an airport or train station.

Consider the filling material

Travelers who like a more firm pillow should opt for a memory foam filling that can offer more support than an inflatable alternative. Microbead pillows can be just as supportive as memory foam ones, but they tend to be on the softer side and more suited to travelers that like a little less structure while sleeping.

Generally, washing instructions will be included with the purchase of a travel pillow or on its tag. Removable covers can usually go through a machine wash, but many of our testers opted to air-dry the cover to prevent any shrinkage that could happen in a dryer. If a pillow doesn’t have a removable cover, you can spot clean the pillow by using a wet cloth or rag dipped into soapy water.

Most standard travel pillows have a semicircular shape that wraps around the neck to support the neck, head, and chin. These U-shaped pillows often have memory foam or microbead filling, but there are also inflatable neck pillows. In addition, standard pillows make great travel pillows, and plenty of rectangular-styled pillows compress down for better portability. Finally, while traditional pillows might be better suited for a traveler in the window seat, there are unique J-shaped travel pillows that are perfect for supporting the neck and head of someone sitting in the middle or aisle seat.

Best under-pillow speakers of 2024

Enjoy music, podcasts, and soundscapes without headphones

Roberts Pillow Talk under-pillow speaker on a purple background

Under-pillow speakers are simple, cheap, and can make a huge difference to your sleep if you struggle with tinnitus or find your mind racing at night. As the name suggests, they slide underneath your pillow and transmit sound through the foam or down, straight to your ear. It works surprisingly well, and there's practically no sound leakage to disturb your partner.

Sleep headphones are a great idea, but they're tricky to get right, and some people find sleeping with anything around their head uncomfortable. They also tend to be rather expensive. You can pick up a good under-pillow speaker for a fraction of the price, and because it's so simple, it should last you many, many years.

You'll notice that none of the speakers here are wireless. That's for a very good reason – wireless speakers contain a lithium battery, which can be very dangerous if it overheats. The safe operating range for these batteries is quite narrow, and it could easily get too hot underneath a pillow.

Whether you want to listen to a podcast, ambient noise from an app like Rainy Mood, an audiobook, or some relaxing music, there's an under-pillow speaker for you.

Best under-pillow speakers of 2024 in full:

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

1. Roberts Radio Pillow Talk Speaker

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Roberts Radio Pillow Talk Speaker delivers the best sound quality of any under-pillow speaker we've tested. Roberts has brought its decades of experience to bear in this little device (measuring a palm-sized 100mm x 80mm x 26mm), and even through your pillow, it manages to render sound with impressive detail.

That's rare for an under-pillow speaker, and shows that price doesn't always reflect quality. Most similar devices – even those costing several times as much – deliver muddy sound that's acceptable if you just want some ambient noise to help with tinnitus, but not suitable for music or audiobooks. That's not an issue here; settle down for the night and you'll hear your favorite tunes or podcasts almost as clearly as you would through headphones, without the discomfort.

We only have two small complaints about the Roberts Radio Pillow Talk Speaker. First of all, there's no volume control in the cable, so you'll have to adjust the sound on your phone or radio before settling down for the night – a minor quibble but potentially annoying if you wake in the night and want to make a change. Second, there's a small three-position switch on the side of the speaker that doesn't seem to do anything. Roberts says you should choose the setting that gives the best audio for you, but it doesn't have any perceivable effect.

That's not an issue, though; the sound from the Pillow Talk is the best we've heard from any under-pillow speaker, and whatever you like to listen to at night, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Read our full Roberts Radio Pillow Talk Speaker review

2. SoundLAB Pillow Speaker

Costing a mere $9.99 / £7.99 (about AU$15), the SoundLAB Pillow Speaker is remarkably cheap, but it's also one of the best.

Its plastic case is a strange 'ivory' shade reminiscent of PC components from the 1990s, and its complete lack of branding is odd, but it's actually very thoughtfully designed. The slightly textured case helps prevent it sliding around underneath your pillow, and the use of speaker grilles on the sides rather than the top means sound isn't muffled en route to your ear.

It has the slim shape you'd expect from an under-pillow speaker, and its flat case is impossible to feel even if you're a light sleeper. Its cable isn't quite as long as that of the Roberts Radio Pillow Talk Speaker, above, but it still gives you plenty of slack to reach from a phone on your nightstand.

It doesn't render high frequencies quite as well as the Pillow Talk, meaning podcasts and audiobooks can sound a little muddy, but very reasonable for the price and superior to the more expensive Sound Oasis Sleep Therapy Pillow Speakers below.

Read our full SoundLAB Pillow Speaker review

3. Sound Oasis Sleep Therapy Pillow Speakers

Unlike the others in this guide, which require you to rest your head directly on top, this pair of connected under-pillow speakers can be spaced out so you can hear audio even if you're tossing and turning at night. They don't offer stereo sound for back-sleepers though; if you want that, you'll need to invest a little extra in Sound Oasis' amplified under-pillow speakers , which connect to a mains outlet.

This simple set of speakers were the quietest of all those we tested. That's not a huge problem (after all, your ear is only a few inches away, and you don't want sound leakage to disturb your partner), but we had to turn the volume up to full using the dial integrated into the 2m cable, and turn it almost to maximum on our phone as well.

As with the SoundLAB Pillow Speaker above, higher frequencies are somewhat muffled, but that's not necessarily an issue; if the low frequencies of brown or pink noise help you drift off at night, these little speakers will render it perfectly.

The Betrayal at House on the Hill Board Game (3rd Edition).

Betrayal at House on the Hill

One of our favorite horror-themed board games.

If H.P. Lovecraft wrote an episode of Scooby-Doo and turned it into a tabletop game, it would be this campy board game. Not much strategy involved, but easy to get invested in the goofy goings-on, making it a perfect rainy day activity.

You save $9 (25%)

L.L.Bean Men’s Bean Boots (8-inch)

Our duck boot pick for mixed terrain (men’s sizes).

Deftly balancing fashion and function, these duck boots are great for wet and muddy weather. They’re laced tighter to the foot than rubber boots, so they don’t slip on and off as easily as others, but they’re some of the most thoughtfully designed pieces of outdoor gear we’ve tried.

Other things to know: We like that these boots are unlined since it keeps the shoe true to its nature as a multi-seasonal, versatile piece of outdoor kit. The leather upper and the coated laces require some breaking in.

Why do Russians call Moscow the Third Rome?

Why is Moscow compared to Ancient Rome?

Why is Moscow compared to Ancient Rome?

For Russian speakers, Moscow has many nicknames. The city is sometimes referred to as the "first throned" indicating it became the first capital of the young Russian state, or "golden-domed" in light of the gilded cupolas of Moscow’s churches. But one of the most familiar names, dating back to the Middle Ages, is the “Third Rome.” But where did it come from?

Successor to Rome and Constantinople

It was the Orthodox monk Philotheus (Filofei) who called Moscow the Third Rome for the first time. In 1523-1524 he wrote letters to the Grand Duke of Moscow urging him to fight against heresies. The Duchy of Moscow, in the monk's view, remained the last bastion of the true faith.

"All the Christian kingdoms have come to an end and have converged in the single kingdom of our sovereign," Philotheus wrote in one of the epistles. "Two Romes fell, a third stands, and there will not be a fourth one."

The First Rome, according to Philotheus, is the real Rome – the capital of the Roman Empire – which brought together dozens of societies under its rule. In the 4 th  century AD Christianity gradually became the dominant religion in the previously pagan empire and Rome became the Christian capital of the world. It was succeeded by Constantinople, the main city of the Byzantine Empire, where, after the Christian Church split into Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox (1054), Orthodox Christianity took root. According to Orthodox Christians, the Catholic Rome fell, descending into heresy, and Constantinople became the Second Rome, the capital of the truly Christian world.

"After the Baptism of Rus in the 10th century, Russians recognized the authority of the Byzantine Emperor as protector of all Christians," says historian Svetlana Lurye. But several centuries later the Second Rome also fell. In 1453, the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople, weakened by political crises, and renamed it Istanbul. Moscow, which in the 15 th  to 16 th  centuries gathered around itself the fragmented Russian lands, became the main Orthodox Christian capital.

Forgotten idea

According to American historian Marshall Poe, the author of  Moscow, the Third Rome: The Origins and Transformations of a "Pivotal Moment" , in the West the idea of a Third Rome is often used to explain Soviet and later Russian foreign policy. Allegedly at its foundation lies the expansionist notions of creating an empire similar to the Roman one. Poe himself believes it is the wrong approach: "It [the idea of a Third Rome] says nothing about long-term trends in Russian foreign policy or Russian national psychology."

Is it possible to break into the Moscow Kremlin?

The historian goes on to explain that the meaning of the concept is exaggerated. In fact, after Philotheus the monk expressed the idea of a Third Rome at the end of the 16 th  century, it was safely forgotten for the next three centuries. The Russian state expanded but not because of its rulers' dreams of an Orthodox empire but for more practical reasons, such as the struggle for resources and access to the seas, to name but a few.

Philotheus's idea was remembered for the first time only in the second half of the 19 th  century, under Emperor Alexander II, when Philotheus's epistles were published in large print runs. The concept of Moscow as the Third Rome was adopted by the Russian movement of Pan-Slavists, who dreamed of uniting the Slavic peoples under the auspices of the Russian Empire. But after the 1917 revolutions and the coming to power of the Communists, the Pan-Slavic ideas died out.

A city of seven hills

Apart from having the status of an imperial capital going back to the Middle Ages, Moscow has little in common with Rome – it has completely different architecture and a much harsher climate. One of the few common features usually mentioned is that Moscow, like Rome, allegedly stands on seven hills.

However, historian and expert on Moscow Alexander Frolov says that the expression "city on seven hills" doesn’t ring true. He explains that, in listing the "hills", chronicles count gentle elevations which are difficult to regard as hills. The only real hill is Borovitsky on which the Moscow Kremlin still stands. Frolov says it simply wishful thinking and a beautiful legend, calling it the “fruit of the imagination of Romantics – they were overcome by their desire to call Moscow the Third Rome."

Moscow is the financial and political centre of Russia and the countries formerly comprising the Soviet Union. It has a population of around 13 million and an area of 2,511 square kilometres (970 sq mi) after an expansion in 2012. One-tenth of all Russian citizens live in the Moscow metropolitan area. Moscow is the second most populous city in Europe, after Istanbul . Moscow is in the UTC+3 time zone; there is no daylight saving time.

Many years since the break up of the Soviet Union, the economy has improved, and the modern era has brought upon a wide variety of construction projects, modern architecture and newer transport systems replacing the derelict ones during Soviet times.

Geography [ edit ]

Moscow is a large metropolis on the Moskva River, which bends its way through the city. The historical center is on the northern bank of the river. The other major waterway is the Yauza River, which flows into the Moskva east of the Kremlin.

Much of Moscow's geography is defined by the 3 'Ring Roads' that circle the city at various distances from the centre, roughly following the outline of the walls that used to surround Moscow. With Red Square and the Kremlin forming the very centre, the innermost ring road is the Boulevard Ring ( Bulvarnoye Koltso ), built in the 1820s where the 16th century walls used to be. It runs from the Christ the Savior Cathedral in south-west central Moscow, to the mouth of the Yauza in south-east central Moscow.

The next ring road, the Garden Ring ( Sadovoe Koltso ), derives its name from the fact that landowners near the road in Tsarist times were obligated to maintain gardens to make the road attractive. In Soviet times, the road was widened, and there are now no gardens there.

The Third Ring Road, completed in 2004, is not much use for tourists but is a heavily used motorway which absorbs a bit of Moscow's traffic. It roughly follows the outline of Kamer-Kollezhsky val , the customs boundary of Moscow in the 18th – early 20th century. The outer edge of Moscow is largely defined by the Moscow Ring Road (widely known by its abbreviation: MKAD-Moskovskaya kolcevaya avto doroga), a motorway which is 108 km (67 mi) long and encircles the entire city (similar to London's M25 and Paris' Périphérique ).

Climate [ edit ]

The climate of Moscow features warm summers and long, cold winters.

Get in [ edit ]

See Russia#Get in for visa requirements to Russia.

By train [ edit ]

travel pillow with stereo speakers

Moscow is a railway hub, with connections to all parts of Russia and far into Europe and Asia. Due to its hub status, Moscow's train stations are often crowded; trains are the usual form of intercity transport for most Russians. The stations have a reputation for being unsafe but paradoxically the threat of terrorism has improved things: security gates, policing and surveillance deter the casual thugs and villains. Guard your valuables and yourself as you would in any big city.

All long-distance trains are operated by Russian Railways and its subsidiaries, except for a few international trains with other operators. Tickets can be bought at stations or online . For domestic trains, you can show the ticket officer your online boarding pass; however, international trains require a printed ticket. There are usually ticket counters with English-speaking personnel - they may be marked as such, or the clerk may direct you to another counter if they can't cope with your English. See Russia#By train 2 for more details on travelling in Russia by train.

From Europe [ edit ]

All trains from Europe halted since 2020

Train stations in Moscow [ edit ]

Moscow has 9 train stations, all of which are near metro stations close to the center of Moscow. Be sure to note the station from which your train is departing, which will be indicated on the ticket, or online . Three stations ( Leningradsky , Yaroslavsky , and Kazansky ) are on one huge square, informally known as the "Three Stations' Square". A running joke among Moscow taxi drivers since the Soviet times is to be able to pick up a fare from one of them to the other, taking the unwary tourist on an elaborate ride in circles. Be prepared for enormous queues trying to enter or exit the Metro at peak times, as people are getting off or on the commuter trains.

By car [ edit ]

Many entry points to Moscow over the Ring Road and into the city feature rotating roadblocks, where teams of traffic police may stop a vehicle, especially if it is not featuring Moscow plates. You may be stopped and questioned but you'll be allowed to proceed if you have all the proper documents.

Foreign cars, especially expensive cars, might attract unwelcome attention, and there is cumbersome paperwork involved to enter Russia by car.

By boat [ edit ]

There is no scheduled passenger service to Moscow by boat; however, cruise ships do provide service to the Northern River Terminal, on the Moscow Canal near the Khimki Reservoir. The pier is not convenient to the city and it can take over 2 hours to reach the city centre by car.

A system of navigable channels and locks connects the Moskva River with the Volga River, which is further connected to the Baltic Sea , White Sea, the Azov, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea. In the Soviet times this allowed the official propaganda to refer to Moscow as "a port on the five seas".

By bicycle [ edit ]

Moscow is the easternmost destination of the EuroVelo cycling routes . Eurovelo Route 2 , the Capitals Route, is a 5,500 km (3,400 mi) route starting in Galway , Ireland , passing through Dublin , London , Berlin , Warsaw and Minsk before terminating in Moscow.

By metro [ edit ]

travel pillow with stereo speakers

The Metro is open from 05:30-01:00. Station entrances are closed at 01:00, and at this time the last trains depart from all of the termini stations. After 01:00, many locals will enter the train station using the exits, which are still open. Service on the ring line runs until 01:30, although entrances are closed at 01:00. The down escalators are also shut off at 01:00.

There is signage in the Metro stations in English and the Latin alphabet, but these signs are not everywhere. Each train carriage has a map in Latin script and there is one near the entrance to each station. Note the direction of the train before you alight. It is worth printing a map of the metro system in both Cyrillic and Latin letters to take with you.

All trains in the system have free WiFi onboard, but you will need to have a Russian phone number to get the authorization code to access the WiFi. Some of the older train cars are not climate controlled.

2 or 3 stations may be connected as transfer points but will each have a different name. There are 2 stations called Smolenskaya and 2 stations called Arbatskaya , but the station pairs are not connected to each other despite having the same name. Some of the stations are very deep underground, and transfer times between certain metro lines can take a lot of time. In the city centre, it can save time to go directly to the above-ground entrance of the line you want to take rather than to enter at a connecting station and transfer underground. On the escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left except for peak hours, when standing on the left side is also allowed.

Some of the train stations include beautiful architecture and it is worth taking a guided tour of the metro system. The most interesting stations in terms of decor are Komsomolskaya (ring line), Novoslobodskaya (ring line), Kievskaya (ring line), Kropotkinskaya (Line #1 - red), Kievskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Arbatskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Ploschad' Revolyutsii (Line #3 - dark blue), Mayakovskaya (Line #2 - dark green). Also look at the architecture of the ground entrance building of Arbatskaya (Line #4 - light blue) and Krasnye Vorota (Line #1 - red). History buffs may appreciate that Metro Line #1 (red) has the oldest stations, opened in 1935.

The Vorobyovy Gory Metro Station on Line #1 (red) is unique in that it is on a bridge crossing the Moscow River. This bridge also carries auto traffic road on another level. There is a beautiful view through the transparent sides of the station. A great observing point around Moscow is located nearby on Vorobyovy hills, next to the main building of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

There are a couple of unique trains operating through the system and you will be lucky if you get to ride them. Aquarelle (Watercolor) is a train that includes an art gallery. The train operates daily on Line #3 (dark blue). The Sokolniki Retro Train is a train modeled after the original 1930s trains and it occasionally is placed into service, usually around a major anniversary of the metro system.

The metro is relatively safe, although pickpockets are a problem, as they are in any environment where a lot of people are pressed together. Opportunistic petty crime, such as snatching someone's mobile phone and jumping out just as the doors are closing, is also commonplace. Take the usual precautions at night when gangs of inebriated teenagers may look for an excuse to beat someone up. There is no train guard or conductor, so the first car near the driver may be the safest. Every car is equipped with an intercom to the driver's cabin; they are beige boxes with a grill and a black button near doors, and mostly work, unless visibly vandalized.

By tram [ edit ]

There are several tram routes, although trams are not common in the city centre.

By monorail [ edit ]

Moscow Monorail is a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) monorail line with 6 stations. It is slower, less frequent, and has shorter operating hours when compared with the metro (every 30 min, 08:00-20:00). However, the view is picturesque. It is useful to get to the Ostankino Tower, or to get to the VDNKh exhibition centre from Metro Line #9 (silver). Interchanges between Moscow Metro and Monorail is free, no additional fee will be charged.

By hop-on-hop-off bus [ edit ]

The hop-on-hop-off bus is a convenient way for tourists to see the major sights quickly and efficiently. The buses feature English-speaking guides to answer any questions. A 1 day pass costs $24 for adults and $15 for children.

See [ edit ]

Do [ edit ].

Moscow has many attractions, but many of them are not friendly to a non-Russian-speaker. English-language newspapers like The Moscow Times , Element [dead link] , Moscow News and others can help to navigate towards English-language friendly attractions and services.

Circuses [ edit ]

Theatres [ edit ].

  • Bolshoi Theatre , one of the oldest and best known ballet and opera company in the world.

Learn [ edit ]

travel pillow with stereo speakers

Moscow remains the educational center of Russia and the former USSR. There are 222 institutes of higher education, including 60 state universities & 90 colleges. Some of these offer a wide-spectrum of programs, but most are centered around a specific field. This is a hold-over from the days of the USSR, when Sovietwide there were only a handful of wide-spectrum "universities" and a large number of narrow-specialization "institutes" (mostly in Moscow & St.Petersburg). Moscow offers some of the best business/management, science, & arts schools in the world. Moscow is also a popular destination for foreign students to learn Russian.

Work [ edit ]

You will need a work visa which is not an easy process. The visa needs to be arranged well in advance of traveling. It is possible to work in Moscow, you just need to find a good company to support you. The main obstacle for many foreigners will be a mandatory Russian language exam required to obtain a work permit.

Shopping malls [ edit ]

Large shopping malls are common near metro stations.

Tipping [ edit ]

For information on tipping in restaurants, see Russia#Eat .

Ethnic food [ edit ]

Authentic ethnic food from countries of the nearby Caucasus ( Azerbaijan , Georgia , Armenia ) is common in Moscow. Japanese food, including sushi, rolls, tempura, and steakhouses are very popular in Moscow. Other Asian cuisines including Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese are becoming increasingly more common.

Budget [ edit ]

Street food [ edit ].

Free-standing kiosks serving sausages, meat pies, or kebobs are plentiful, although the origins of the meat served is questionable and the food has been known to occasionally make people sick.

Muscovites are also fond of their ice cream, consumed in any weather, even in the dead of winter, cheap and usually of superior quality; kiosks can be found all over the center and near all Metro stations.

Foodcourts 2.0 [ edit ]

This term is used in articles by local food critics: since 2016, several special food courts were opened with independent and small food chains, for those people who get bored of McDonald's-like food. They offer a wider choice of cuisines.

Clubs [ edit ]

Nightlife in Moscow is bustling, intense and exciting. It starts quite late; it's common for the headliners to start at 02:00-02:00. Most noticeable are areas near Solyanka street and Krasniy Oktyabr' place. At summer time a lot of clubs opening open-air terraces called "verandas". Most of clubs in Moscow are very picky of who they let in, so make sure you have a positive attitude and dress up if you are going to a fancy club.

Gazgolder [dead link] (not far from Kremlin) is among the best.

Cafes [ edit ]

Moscow has several café chains with great coffee including Coffeemania and Coffee Bean [dead link] . Moscow also has a good selection of tea saloons. High-quality infusion teas such as Newby, are widely available in cafes, both in packets and loose.

Asking to add boiling water to the tea you ordered earlier is a practice that some cafes don't welcome, but normally it's acceptable.

Sleep [ edit ]

Stay safe [ edit ].

Moscow enjoys a relatively low crime rate.

Drunk people are the most likely sources of problems. In the past years, lots of policemen were corrupt, and it was best to avoid them. Nowadays Moscow has a Tourist Police force, which officers are able to speak foreign languages and help tourists. Police officers are equipped with body-cameras.

It is preferable to avoid some parts of the outer districts of Moscow, especially in the south. Some of those areas are notorious for gopniks (drunkards notorious for muggings and starting fights with strangers, and will do so seemingly unprovoked), who normally hang out in sparse residential areas and in industrial zones. The same problems can be witnessed in the surrounding regions and in other Russian cities as well.

While traveling in Moscow, as in the rest of Russia, you should always have your passport with you. If you look non-white, your papers may get checked more often than otherwise. The police may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow. Always remember that if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper at a time of check-in, so don't worry in this case. The police are usually looking for migrants from Central Asia and unless you fit this profile, you are unlikely to be questioned.

Women should take caution walking alone late at night since they may receive unwanted attention from drunk men. Women should also stay clear of large companies of men in front of bars, restaurants, etc. It is best to walk with a friend if possible.

Streets can become very slippery in winter. Wear shoes or, even better, boots with decent grip to prevent twisted ankles. Ice patches can be hard to spot. A waterproof raincoat is also sensible.

Traffic is poorly handled, and vehicle accident rates are very high. Stay safe.

If you need help with translation, ask students or pupils: younger people are more likely to be able to help you than the older generations.

Connect [ edit ]

For information on using telephones and buying SIM cards in Russia, see Russia#Connect .

Mobile Internet is quite affordable in Russia, but you have to buy Russian SIM-card first.

Wireless Internet [ edit ]

Moscow Metro has Wi-Fi in all trains. It is ad-supported.

Mosgortrans has Wi-Fi spots on every bus, trolleybus and tram. Also sometimes you can find Wi-Fi spot on a public transport stop.

Beeline Wi-Fi [dead link] operates the largest network of both paid and free Wi-Fi access points. If there is a charge, you can pay online via credit card.

There is a large network of free Wi-Fi hotspots in the city centre; check your device in the middle of a busy area and you may find one.

Many cafes and restaurants offer Wi-Fi - ask for password. Most bookstores offer free Wi-Fi, including "Dom Knigi" on New Arbat Street or "Respublika" bookstore on Tverskaya near Mayakovskaya Metro Station.

Some establishments that offer free Wi-Fi may require you to verify an authorization code sent to a Russian phone number before gaining access, but for the most part, foreign numbers also work as of 2016.

Cope [ edit ]

Embassies [ edit ].

Moscow is one of the global diplomatic capitals, competing with Berlin , Brussels , Beijing , Paris , London , Tokyo and Washington D.C. . Most of the world's countries have their embassies in the city.
