Another preseason Clasico, Barcelona-Real Madrid, coming to U.S. this summer

In what has become a burgeoning, money-making tradition , FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will bring their renowned rivalry to the United States for a second consecutive summer.

They'll play El Clasico, as its known, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 29, as part of the second-year Soccer Champions Tour.

It will be a preseason match, of course. The tour — which will also feature Manchester United , Arsenal , Juventus and AC Milan — is not a tournament like some of its predecessors were. It is essentially eight one-off games, smack-dab in the middle of the Women's World Cup, billed by organizers as a "summer series" that will span California, Las Vegas, Texas and Florida.

But the headliner is the game of all games, perhaps the world's most celebrated sporting rivalry, at the grandiose stadium of all grandiose stadiums, Jerry World, the 105,000-seat home of the Dallas Cowboys that aspires to host the 2026 World Cup final .

El Clasico comes to the U.S.

When Barca and Madrid first brought their blood feud to the U.S. in 2017, the concept was ridiculed by some purists; but the exhibition game, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, was a roaring success. The Miami Clasico drew 1.7 million viewers on ESPN platforms and a sellout crowd willing to pay several hundreds of dollars apiece for tickets. Players competed, genuinely. A 3-2 Barcelona win thrilled everybody involved.

It felt, at the time, like a watershed moment for the International Champions Cup , the preseason event that grew to 18 teams and 27 games spread across nine countries late last decade. In early 2020, organizers were in negotiations to inaugurate Southern California’s SoFi Stadium with a second stateside Clasico that summer.

But then came COVID-19. The ICC canceled its 2020 programming, fizzled during the pandemic, and devolved into a legal dispute between its parent company, Relevent Sports, and its mastermind, the legendary soccer promoter Charlie Stillitano. The men's ICC has not been played since.

Relevent still runs a women’s ICC and other ventures. This summer, it is working with England 's Premier League and Spain 's La Liga on two separate North American tours. But in 2022, the Soccer Champions Tour swooped in for Barca and Madrid, and organized a Clasico at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. (Barca won, 1-0, in front of a boisterous, sellout crowd.)

In its second year, the Soccer Champions Tour has expanded to feature two clubs each from Spain, England and Italy . Sixth Street, a global investment firm that has partnered with both Barca and Real Madrid , is the company behind it. AEG is producing it. Legends is a key partner. And Stillitano, according to a source with knowledge of the tour's evolution, has been involved as a consultant.

Preseason tour schedules

The Soccer Champions Tour announced its full 2023 slate Friday:

Saturday, July 22: Barcelona vs. Juventus — Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California

Sunday, July 23: Real Madrid vs. AC Milan — Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California

Wednesday, July 26: Arsenal vs. Barcelona — SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California

Wednesday, July 26: Real Madrid vs. Manchester United — NRG Stadium, Houston

Thursday, July 27: Juventus vs. AC Milan — Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California

Saturday, July 29: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid — AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Tuesday, August 1: AC Milan vs Barcelona — Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

Wednesday, August 2: Juventus vs. Real Madrid — Camping World Stadium, Orlando

Kickoff times haven’t yet been determined. In their Friday news release, organizers said that “the matches remain subject to approval by the relevant football authorities,” but that is likely a formality.

Separately, Arsenal and Manchester United have organized a preseason friendly at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 22. United is also set to play Wrexham on July 25 in San Diego — presumably with a reserve team, because one day later, it is now scheduled to play Real Madrid in Houston. It then plays Borussia Dortmund on July 30 in Vegas .

Arsenal will also play the MLS All-Stars on July 19 in Washington, D.C.

The Premier League's own "summer series" will feature Chelsea , Newcastle, Aston Villa , Fulham , Brighton and Brentford, with games in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, New Jersey and Maryland.

Soccer Champions Tour 2023: How to watch on TV, fixtures & teams involved

Article image:Soccer Champions Tour 2023: How to watch on TV, fixtures & teams involved

A select group of leading European clubs will touch down in the United States this summer to take part in the Soccer Champions Tour.

Pre-season tournaments are getting underway as teams prepare for the 2023/24 season and the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United will all be involved in this spectacle which will see some of the best players in the world do battle without the usual competitive rewards on offer.

OneFootball Videos

There are eight games in total to look forward to. Here is all you need to know about the event in the USA.

Where is the Soccer Champions Tour 2023 taking place?

Games part of the Soccer Champions Tour 2023 will take place at eight separate stadiums around the United States.

Which teams are competing in the Soccer Champions Tour 2023?

Six of the biggest teams in Europe spanning three different divisions take part in the action at the Soccer Champions Tour. Side from the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga will compete across the eight matches.

Soccer Champions Tour 2023 full schedule

The teams involved cannot all play each other as it isn't practical for each club's pre-season commitments. Manchester United will only play one game as part of the Soccer Champions Tour, while others will face more opponents.

Real and Barca look like the headliners of the tournament, playing four games each, more than anyone else.

The major fixture is El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid in Texas, but Juventus vs AC Milan in a new setting will be interesting and there is always a certain allure about Real Madrid vs Man Utd.

This tournament was created by Sixth Street and there is a stated aim of spreading it to the women's game in the future.

"We are proud to be partnering with the world's most storied clubs, which have the world's strongest and most passionate supporters, to provide this rare opportunity for American fans to experience the game at the highest level," said Alan Waxman, co-founder and CEO at Sixth Street.

"While this year's tour consists of men's clubs, we look forward to expanding next summer to bring the world's best women's clubs to local audiences around the globe, and in the future to evolve this series into a format with real games of consequence."

How to watch the Soccer Champions Tour 2023

ESPN+ will be the home of the Soccer Champions Tour in the United States if you can't get to the games in person. As for Canada, DAZN is the place to be to see Man Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid and the rest in action.

For fans in the United Kingdom, club-specific channels - which often require a subscription fee - are the way to go. Channels like Sky Sports and TNT Sports never tend to advertise friendlies of this nature.

2024 Players Championship purse, prize money: Payout, Scottie Scheffler's winner's share from $25 million pool

Big stakes and big money were on the line this week at the pga tour's flagship event.

players-championship-trophy-g.jpg

The 2024 Players Championship represents the biggest non-major tournament on the PGA Tour schedule, and as such, it appropriately offers the biggest purse. With an event of this magnitude, it is only right the payday matches the stakes as a total of $25 million will be up for grabs this week at TPC Sawgrass.

The largest prize pool of the season, the purse at the Players Championship also shelled out the largest winner's check of the young year: $4.5 million. It marks the second straight season that this structure will be in place, and Scottie Scheffler has claimed both winner's shares as he became the first golfer to go back-to-back at The Players Championship  with a come-from-behind victory on Sunday.

In fact, Scheffler has collected $8.5 million for just 14 days of work over the last two weeks thanks to his $4 million winner's check from the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a signature PGA Tour event, last week. Certainly good work if you can get it.

Each of the top 35 finishers at The Players Championship collected six-figure sums with those inside the top 13 cashing more than $500,000 and those inside the top five clearing $1 million. While only Scheffler raised trophy at week's end, the Players champion was hardly be the only winner at the PGA Tour's flagship event.

Let's take a look at the payout list for the 2024 Players Championship for the top 65 players who make the weekend at TPC Sawgrass.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Adam Scott was one of the last players to finish his Players Championship second round early Friday evening at TPC Sawgrass, and when he emerged from the scoring room a small group of reporters awaited him.

Scott, who was 2-under-par entering Saturday’s third round, was neither at the top of the leaderboard nor had he just missed the cut in some sort of dramatic or heartbreaking fashion that warranted answers or explanations for inquiring minds.

The 43-year-old Aussie was one shot inside the cutline, ensuring him Saturday and Sunday tee times at Sawgrass, but 12 shots off the lead held by Wyndham Clark and not likely to contend for the title.

So, why were reporters waiting for him?

“I birdied 17 to make the cut at the Players Championship,’’ Scott said with a sarcastic smile, knowing that’s not what we wanted to ask him about.

This is the unfortunate state of the game we live in at the moment, where the conversations are less about birdies and bogeys and tournaments won or lost, but about business.

On a better day, we’d have been waiting on Scott to discuss his golf. Maybe how he birdied 17 or whether he felt pressure to make the cut or what his final plans were in preparation of next month’s Masters.

But these aren’t better days in golf.

That’s why we were waiting for Scott after his round because he’s one of six player-directors on the PGA Tour’s player policy board, and Golfweek on Friday reported that the player-directors are being encouraged to meet possibly on Monday with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the head of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which runs rival LIV Golf .

soccer tour champions

The PGA Tour and LIV have been at a stalemate in terms of bringing the best players in the world together since that “framework agreement’’ between the two was announced last June 6.

So, according to the report, in an effort to move things along, the players have been encouraged to meet with Al-Rumayyan.

“If the PIF thinks it’s beneficial, we meet and I think it’s a good thing to do,” Scott said. “As far as getting on with business, let’s get on with business. I’m curious to see how that all pans out, just like everyone in the game is … just to put a face to a name.

“Ultimately, the players [will] vote going into whether a deal will happen or not. And with the seriousness of what we’re voting on, I think it is important that we’ve all met and no matter what anyone’s feelings are.’’

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has met with Al-Rumayyan several times, the most recent of which he revealed was in January. On Tuesday, during a press conference in advance of the Players, Monahan, without divulging any details, characterized the negotiations with PIF as “accelerating.’’

Whatever that means.

The Players Championship ends on Sunday and the meeting is reportedly scheduled to take place Monday possibly at a private home near TPC Sawgrass.

Five of the six player-directors on the Tour’s policy board were in the field at the Players — Scott, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Peter Malnati and Webb Simpson. Tiger Woods is the only player-director who didn’t play this week. Spieth and Simpson missed the cut, though Spieth indicated he may stay in town for a couple more days.

“Something needs to happen for our sport,’’ Malnati said Saturday after his third-round 66. “I would love to see a unified game where when we have events like the Players Championship, we have all the best players in the world and we’re proud to call them PGA Tour members. I don’t know how we get there, but that’s what I want.’’

One of the stickiest issues among players regarding any merger or deal between the PGA Tour and LIV is the path back to the PGA Tour by the players who took the Saudi money to jump to that tour.

“That’s obviously the thing that’s most top of mind for people,’’ Malnati said. “You would find opinions that ran the gamut, from guys that just have a line in the sand that say ‘never,’ and guys [who want the LIV players back]. So, we’re going to have to net out somewhere in the middle.

“The easiest, most likely route we go when we do find a way for guys to come back is guys aren’t coming back to the PGA Tour with membership on the PGA Tour, they’re coming back to the PGA Tour as guys are going to have to earn their way back here.

“We need to give our fans a product where when we have events like this at the best venues with the best everything, we have the best players in the world playing. We need to find a way to give that to our fans, because that’s what they deserve for being loyal to us.’’

If that can be accomplished, then we’ll be more compelled to ask a player like Scott details about how he birdied the famous island-green 17th and what it meant for him to make the cut at the Players.

Golf things, not business stuff.
