Blame it on the shutdown. When the Kentucky Headhunters watched their 2020 dates go up in smoke, they knew with or without live dates, they’re a band… and bands have to play. After a half century of coming together at Mama Effie’s Practice House, first as Itchy Brother, then the Kentucky Headhunters, as well as watching next generation hard rockers Black Stone Cherry come into their own sound, the idea of not making music wasn’t something they could stomach.
“We’re a band,” says guitarist/vocalist Richard Young. “We play . When all our shows got cancelled, we decided we were gonna go up to the Practice House and play. Then we figured we might as well go into the studio, but instead of having an agenda or some idea of ‘what’ was this supposed to be, we all looked at each other and went, ‘Well, what do you do?’
“No discussions, no trying to be something. Just ‘What do you want to play?’”
Indeed, That’s A Fact, Jack may be the Kentucky Headhunters most coherent, yet eclectic album ever. Whether the creeping blues-burner “Gonna Be Alright,” the sinewy, sensuous “Susannah,” the slow turn reckoning “We Belong Together” or the dynamic minimalist reflection “Watercolors In the Rain,” the Heads continue sowing the good vibes, the better guitar sounds and enough groove to keep the room rocking.
From the first drum crack and building pound of “That’s A Fact, Jack,” there’s a plea to come to our senses, drill down and find ways to come together. That notion of coming together informs the hip-checking shuffle of “How Could I,” a more personally beseeching song of apology and fixing it with some searing guitar and a tumbling backbeat.
Blame it on England. When the Kentucky Headhunters were growing up, the rock & roll coming across “the pond” – hard rock bands Led Zeppelin, CREAM, Cactus and the Rolling Stones, as well as the Beatles, Kinks and Faces – made its way to Edmonton, Kentucky where Richard and Fred Young and their cousin Greg Martin were raised. It also permeated the Missouri bootheel, where Doug Phelps, who was born in Leachville, Arkansas, grew up.
“Susannah” was first inspired from the passing of one of Doug’s long time musical influences and eventual friend, Levon Helm, drummer and vocalist for The Band. “He and I were both born in Arkansas and I always felt a connection to him because of that,” he says. “It hit me pretty hard when I heard of Levon’s passing and I just kept hearing him sing ‘Ophelia’ in my head. That led me to singing ‘Susannah’ in its place and once that started, the story fell into place for me and I couldn’t write the lyrics down fast enough! It became a song about the special women that love and support their ‘music man’ and how they understand what it is that drives us.”
Something about the mods, the rockers, the twist of the classic American blues of Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters got under those boys’ skins. Even during their multi-platinum dominance of country music, winning Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music and American Music Awards, the Headhunters were always more a rock band with rural roots than a country band with big amps.
“I didn’t fly. I was scared,” laughs Richard Young. “So even when things were rocking, we didn’t go to England, or Europe, and anywhere that needed a plane. We had the music, and that was what England was to us.
“But when Black Stone Cherry took off over there, John Fred (his son) set it all up for us to go. We went over to Scandinavia and played SwedenRock first, opening for Queen… It was like we, the Kentucky Headhunters, had made it. Decades later, there we were on this rock festival two bands down the bill from Queen.
“Then we got to England, loaded into Sprinter vans – and when we pulled up at the Borderline, there was a line of people around the block!
“We’d never made it to England, the place we pulled so much influence from, but our music had.”
Blame it on Carnaby Street. When London was swinging and Itchy Brother was playing their heavy rock/blues around the American South and almost getting signed to Zeppelin’s Swan Song Records, the future Grammy-winners were sopping up the long-legged birds, hip-hugger fashions and sense of a psychedelic grooviness that is more present on That’s A Fact, Jack than at any time in one of the most far-ranging and eclectic careers in American music.
“When we got to England, people were holdin’ up cards that said, ‘Stumblin’,’” Young marvels. “They even knew the Johnnie Johnson records we’ve made together. They knew all the blues stuff, the rock & roll stuff. It was magical… And since we’d never been there when it was all happening, Fred wrote ‘Cup of Tea,’ which is all about what that era was all about. It’s 1968 and Carnaby Street and all those girls and bands and innocence.”
The Merseybeat-steeped “Cup” draws on a time long gone, but somehow feels fresh and sparkling in the innocence of drummer Fred Young’s raw-boned vocal delivery. The drummer brother also contributes a full-frontal take on Rick Derringer’s “Cheap Tequila,” equally redolent of a time when rock was wild, untamed and elegantly squalid.
Blame it on nostalgia. But only the most frisky, vital sense. When the Heads converged on Barrick Record Studio in Glasgow, Kentucky, they were amazed at how fluid and fun these sessions were. Young admits, “To be honest, this band plays everything … and we just decided to play everything we loved. T.J. Lyle from the (Georgia) Thunderbolts was up visiting. We got to writing lyrics to some of these songs.
“Like ‘How Could I,’ it’s about the generations and how life goes. I was this old cat up at the Practice House writing with Black Stone Cherry, remembering Itchy Brother and the girls coming around – and how some of those girls became our wives. It all goes ‘round, don’t it?
“And when we decided to just play what we loved, Fred wanted Greg to sing ‘Cheap Tequila,’ because he has that Rick Derringer kinda voice. But Greg wanted to do something else. ‘Cheap Tequila’ was one of those songs we all just loved, so Fred did it. But Greg said, ‘If we’re doing this, then I want to sing ‘Shotgun Effie.’ I wrote those lyrics and we did it in ’73 and I wanna do it again now.’”
“Shotgun Effie,” with its seek-and-destroy guitar riff and hammer down drumming, was Itchy Brothers very first single. Still in high school, it was the first record the boys put out, and nearly fifty years later, this raging ode to a silver-haired leadfoot, Grandmother Effie, is every bit as raucous and fun.
Blame it on semantics. Heck, blame it on a world that’s slightly off its kilter. Wildly apolitical, the Headhunters have always been about spreading the love, the joy, the come together. Whether it was a heavy take on Bill Monroe’s “Walk Softly On This Heart of Mine,” a torqued up read on Cargill Henson’s “Skip-A-Rope,” or a psyche-blues spin on Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit In The Sky,” the Headhunters continue to lift folks up, lighten their load and bring people together.
“Growing up in a hippie nation, growing up with all that British music, it was a great time to be learning all this stuff. We’ve always been positive musicians who were influenced by the hippie coalition of the ‘60s. ‘Gonna Be Alright’ is a keep your chin up and care about each other track, ‘That’s a Fact, Jack’ is something your Dad’d say about getting on with it, because that’s a part of getting through where we are now. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, people were people and politics didn’t define you, what was in your heart did. That’s what it’s really about.
“So, this album, beyond all the fun of just getting in there and playing, is a statement for our society in these times, and an offering of what we think people need right now. You know, in Europe, we’re played on Planet Rock and classic rock stations. They don’t even think about what we might be labeled here, they take us on the music. There’s a lot for all of us to take from that.
“Don’t worry about the labels, man. How’s it make you feel? If you ask me, this is modern society Southern rock & roll. It’s for the times and the people. It’s all the influences and all the things we love, all the things with no borders or worrying about what doesn’t fit.”
Now That’s A Fact, Jack .

The Kentucky Headhunters Brought A Party To Newberry
by MRM • September 16, 2022
The Kentucky Headhunters
September 15, 2022
Newberry, SC
Newberry Opera House
Review by Joseph Hett
The Kentucky Headhunters brought their rocking country to the historic Newberry Opera House in Newberry, SC on Thursday night.
Brothers Richard Young (vocals/rhythm guitar) and Fred Young (drums), Greg Martin (lead guitar) and Doug Phelps (vocals/bass) came out to a montage of songs ranging from “Blue Moon of Kentucky” to “Sunshine of Your Love.”
The Kentucky Headhunters got the foot stomping started with “It’s Chitlin’ Time,” “Deep South Blues Again” and “Rag Top.” Throughout the evening, Richard Young and Phelps would take turns on lead vocals – with Richard Young getting the more bluesy tunes and Phelps getting the more country tunes.
“Walk Softly on This Heart of Mine” really got everyone perked up. This extended jam even featured Martin throwing in a “Joy to the World” (the Christmas carol) riff at the end. Martin was a master of the guitar all night long – creating riffs and blazing solos.
To the crowd’s delight, they featured “The House of the Rising Sun.” It included an ode to “Gilligan’s Island” with the “three hour tour” lyrics. It also ended with the intro chords of “Stairway to Heaven.”
Richard Young spoke about being away from family during the pandemic and recording their new album titled “…That’s A Fact Jack!” They then showcased the Christmas themed “Let’s All Get Together and Fight.” Richard Young also noted that the Kentucky Headhunters worked with the late Johnnie Johnson on 1993’s album “That’ll Work.” They then spotlighted the catchy “Stumblin’.”
After “Some Folks Like to Steal,” the blues were on full display with Freddie King’s “Have You Ever Loved a Woman.” Martin really had the guitar strings screaming on that one. Next up was the fun “Rock ‘n’ Roll Angel.”
Richard Young said some girls at their farm asked them when were they going to write a pretty song about them instead of the usual party songs. That led them to write “Baby, You’re Too Much to Lose.”
They cranked it back up with “My Daddy Was a Milkman” and “Oh Lonesome Me.” Fred Young, who donned his signature coonskin cap to start the show, performed a monster drum solo. The rest of the band came out for Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky.”
“Dumas Walker” and “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” closed out the set. For the encore, they performed the Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down” with a “Hey Jude” ending.
After all of these years, the Kentucky Headhunters are still going strong. Their unique brand of rocking country always belongs at a party!

The Kentucky Headhunters
Artist Information
The Kentucky Headhunters created a hybrid of honky tonk, blues, and Southern rock that appealed to fans of both rock and country music. The origins of the Kentucky Headhunters lie in 1968, when Fredand Richard Young began playing together with their cousins Greg Martin and Anthony Kenney at the Youngs' grandmother's house. Mark Orr also later joined them. The first incarnation of the band was called the Itchy Brothers, and the group played together informally for over a decade. After about 13 years, the bandmembers began launching separate careers: Richard Young went off to write songs for Acuff-Rose, while Fred Young began touring with country beauty Sylvia. Martin became a member of Ronnie McDowell's band, while Kenney dropped out of music. In 1985, Martin decided to reassemble the Itchy Brothers. When Kenney declined to rejoin the group, Martin remembered Doug Phelps, whom he had met while on tour with McDowell. Phelps joined the new project, which was named the Kentucky Headhunters. Besides Martin and Phelps, the band also included the Young brothers and Doug's brother Ricky Lee Phelps.
The Headhunters started playing twice monthly on The Chitlin' Show, a program on Munfordville, Kentucky radio station WLOC. From these 90-minute performances, the Headhunters built up a following. They sent an eight-song demo to Mercury, and soon after, the label signed the group. The original demo tape was remixed, and became the basis of the band's first album, 1989's Pickin' on Nashville, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its release and quickly became a hit. "Dumas Walker" reached number 15 in the spring of 1990, followed by the group's biggest hit, the number six "Oh, Lonesome Me." In 1991, the Headhunters released their second effort, Electric Barnyard. The album received mixed reviews, couldn't muster a single, and sold weakly. In summer 1992, the Phelps brothers left the group to form Brothers Phelps, a more traditional country group.
The remaining Headhunters brought ex-Itchy Brothers Anthony Kenney and Mark Orr to the group, and the rehashed lineup released Rave On! in 1993. The album marked a progression toward bluesy Southern rock, which came to fruition later that same year with That'll Work, a collaboration with former Chuck Berry pianist Johnnie Johnson. In 1996, Doug returned on lead vocals, and a year later the band issued Stompin' Grounds. Songs from the Grass String Ranch followed in 2000, and Soul appeared in spring 2003. Big Boss Man was released in 2005 and Flying Under the Radar in 2006, both from CBUJ Entertainment. Dixie Lullabies, the group's 12th album, and first studio recording of new original material since 2003, appeared from Red Dirt Records in 2011. In 2015, the Headhunters released another collaborative album with Johnnie Johnson, Meet Me in Bluesland, drawn from unissued sessions recorded in 2003, two years before Johnson's death. Just before entering the studio to record their next studio LP, bandmates Richard and Fred Young lost their father. That loss, combined with the excitement of the band's first European tour, added an emotional poignancy to On Safari, which was released in 2016.

Meet the 10 Biggest Musicians From Kentucky
Posted: December 4, 2023 | Last updated: December 4, 2023
Kentucky is a fascinating place, full of natural resources, caves, and twists and turns through a bucolic country. Though it is known as “The Bluegrass State” for its ubiquitous type of grass, the genre of bluegrass music was also invented here. Indeed, out of the Kentucky mountain hollers, many great musical acts have sprung forth. Let’s meet the 10 biggest musicians from Kentucky. ( Discover the top 50 songs about America. )
To compile a list of the 10 biggest musicians from Kentucky, 24/7 Tempo consulted various musical sites and databases including Hello Music Theory and The Singers Room. Next, we selected musicians from a range of genres and decades. After that, we consulted sites like Biography and Britannica for the musicians’ biographical information.
Loretta Lynn
- Hometown: Butcher Hollow
One of the biggest musicians from Kentucky is Loretta Lynn. She first got started in music playing in local clubs before she was spotted by a representative from Zero Records. This led to a widely successful music career, spawning numerous hit songs like “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl,” as well as the musical film “Coal Miner’s Daughter” based on her life.
Known for her groundbreaking role in country music, Lynn received many accolades for her work. Besides awards from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, Lynn was nominated for 18 Grammy Awards, winning three. As of 2022, Lynn is history’s most-awarded female country music artist. She died of natural causes the same year.
Billy Ray Cyrus
- Hometown: Flatwoods
Billy Ray Cyrus is a country singer, songwriter, and actor. He first rose to prominence with his hit song, “Achy Breaky Heart. This song not only topped the country charts, it achieved triple-platinum status in Australia, as well as repopularizing the line dance. Since then, Cyrus has had a prolific career, recording 16 studio albums featuring over 50 hit songs.
Though Cyrus continued to hit platinum with his releases, he earned his first number-one single in 2019 after appearing on Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road.” In addition to music, Cyrus has also had a successful acting career. His credits include “Mulholland Drive,” “The Nanny,” “Diagnosis Murder,” and “Love Boat.” Cyrus is the father of equally successful singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus.
Dwight Yoakam
- Hometown: Pikeville
Another one of the biggest musicians from Kentucky is Dwight Yoakam. Born Dwight David Yoakam, he first rose to prominence after releasing his debut album “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc.” This album, along with the next two, all reached number one on the country charts. Yoakam has also had two number-one hit songs called “Streets of Bakersfield” and “I Sang Dixie.”
In addition to music, Yoakam is a successful and well-regarded actor. Some of his credits include “Sling Blade,” “Panic Room,” “Wedding Crashers,” and the television show “Under the Dome.” For his musical success, Yoakam has won two Grammy Awards and one Academy of Country Music Award.
Chris Stapleton
- Hometown: Lexington
Born Christopher Alvin Stapleton, Chris Stapleton is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. He first rose to prominence as a songwriter, co-writing six number-one country songs for other artists. After a successful behind-the-scenes career, Stapleton embarked on a solo career, with his first album “Traveller” reaching number one on the Billboard charts and being certified platinum four times over.
It’s no surprise then that Stapleton has received many accolades for his work. These include eight Grammy Awards, 14 Country Music Association Awards, and 10 Academy of Country Music Awards. Moreover, The Academy of Country Music named him the artist-songwriter of the decade in 2019.
- Hometown: Louisville

For their musical success, The Kentucky Headhunters have won three Country Music Association Awards, an Academy of Country Music Award, and a Grammy Award. ( Learn about the most popular musical artists who’ve never had a No. 1 hit. )
Cage The Elephant
- Hometown: Bowling Green
Cage the Elephant is a rock band from Bowling Green, Kentucky. The band first rose to prominence with the release of its debut album, “Cage the Elephant.” This album produced several singles including “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” which reached 32 on the UK Singles Chart.

The Everly Brothers
- Hometown: Brownie
Two of the biggest musicians from Kentucky are, no doubt, The Everly Brothers. Consisting of Phil and Don Everly, the duo first rose to prominence with the no. 1 hit song “Bye Bye Love.” From there, the duo released a string of hit albums and singles including “Wake Up Little Susie” and “Problems.”
Though The Everly Brothers’ musical output simmered after the brothers joined the Marines in the early 1960s, their brief run would influence musicians such as the Beach Boys and the Beatles, due to their combination of acoustic guitar playing and close-harmony singing. For their success, The Everly Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Mary Travers
Born Mary Allin Travers, Mary Travers was a singer-songwriter. She first rose to prominence as one part of the wildly successful musical trio Peter, Paul, and Mary. Though the group broke up shortly after releasing their no. 1 hit song “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” Travers would embark on a successful solo career.
During this time she released several albums including “Mary,” “Morning Glory,” and “Circles.” Peter, Paul, and Mary would reunite in the late 70s, however, and release a string of new albums as well as tour extensively. For their success, the trio was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. Mary Travers died in 2009 from leukemia.
Bill Monroe
- Hometown: Rosine
One of the biggest musicians from Kentucky is, no doubt, Bill Monroe. Born a little after the turn of the 20th century, Monroe would become one of the most influential musicians of all time and earn the title “The Father of Bluegrass.” Over his long and storied career, Monroe released the now-class bluegrass songs “Molly and Tenbrooks,” “Wicked Path of Sin,” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky.”
For his success in practically creating a new genre of music, Monroe received countless accolades during his career. Besides being made an honorary Kentucky Colonel, Monroe was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a National Medal of Arts. ( Discover the 25 biggest hits of the 60s according to Billboard .)
