What's Trending This Month?

Want to know what are the most popular kitesurf holiday resorts, hotels and tours being booked in March?

March is the last reliable windy month for the main 'Winter season' destinations like South Africa ,  Cape Verde , South Brazil and Asia . As we move into Spring and early Summer (especially April and May), the options for wind are limited to Morocco ( Dakhla lagoon in for flat water ,  or Essaouira for waves ) , and the Caribbean

By now Easter is pretty booked up in most places, but if you have a healthy budget, we can still source great holidays. Just expect to pay more for booking at this late stage.

Looking ahead into the summer holidays and October Half Term it is important to get your holiday booked up if you want the best locations. Summer 2023 going to be a big period for travel. Looking further to Christmas time, we now have all the fares out so it is important to grab them before the prices start escalating.

For a great deal, May and June are brilliant months to travel. Great value, not too hot, and uncrowded windsurf spots.

Ponta Preta is a gnarly but incredible wave spot, with a wave that breaks close to the rocks and with offshore wind, so it’s definitely for advanced kitesurfers only! If you are at a level to take this one on you’ll be stoked with the long pumping waves and perfect cross offshore wind direction. The waves can get really big here, and the launch isn’t exactly the easiest with a big shore break to get through, but it’s totally worth it for the kitesurfing conditions once you get out. The wave kitesurfing world tour has stopped here more than once, and it’s home to Mitu Monteiro and Airton Cozzolino, two of the best wave kitesurfers in the world. If you could name a reason they got so good, it might be having Ponta Preta on their doorstep!

In the heart of the expansive Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Senegal, lies the invaluable archipelago of Cape Verde. This seemingly modest cluster of islands, however, holds immense significance, not only for its geographical allure but also as a haven for board sports enthusiasts. The ION CLUB Sal, with its two distinct centers strategically placed on the beautiful Santa Maria beach and in Ponta Leme, embodies the essence of this aquatic paradise.

2 kites in the breaking waves at Ponta Sino

Ponta Sino lies at the Western end of Kite Beach in Cape Verde, offering a mid size wave generally more suited to intermediate and advanced kitesurfers. The wind here blows cross or cross off shore so be careful not to kitesurf too far out past the point and into the open ocean. It’s one of the kite spots which is popular for jumping and freestyle, due to the waves breaking over a shallow reef with flat spots in between the waves. Kitesurfers wanting to jump should watch out for wave riders and vice versa.

Cape Verde itself is well known for its kitesurfing, and there are multiple local riders competing on the kitesurfing world tour. If you’re lucky you’ll get to see them in action in the waves, and if conditions are perfect you can head to Ponta Preta to watch or partake in some serious wave riding. Santa Maria is the local town where there is generally a really good vibe with all the kitesurfers hanging out in the evening, and the local seafood is as fresh as can be!

Random Wave at Kite Beach on Boa Vista Island

Escape to the tropical paradise of Boa Vista Praia Carlota, Cape Verde, where kitesurfing enthusiasts can indulge in a thrilling water sports adventure. With its stunning beaches, ideal wind conditions, and vibrant nightlife, Boa Vista is the perfect destination for those seeking an unforgettable kitesurfing getaway.

Das ist ein Kitestrand in Sal.

Kite Beach in Sal is one of the most popular kite spots on the island, with a mix of waves and flat water, and is also one of the only places on the island where you can learn to kitesurf. It is located a short distance from the main town of Santa Maria, and due to the pretty friendly kitesurfing conditions and the fact you can choose to kite with either your surfboard or twintip, it tends to be one of the busiest spots in Sal. The island is home to multiple world champion wave kitesurfers, and kite beach is the place where a lot of people hone their skills before hitting the more aggressive wave spots around the island. The wind blows cross onshore, so it’s perfect if you aren’t super comfortable with the waves as you know you will always be blown back to the beach.

Placeholder missing Picture

Seahorse Bay Kitesurfing Spot is one of those dreamy flat water areas in Egypt that have had kite schools from the very beginning, and remain popular to this day. Several of the big German companies call this their home in Egypt and for good reason, with stunning crystal clear water, wind for most of the year and perfect kitesurfing conditions from total beginners up to professional freestyle kitesurfers. The local area doesn’t offer much in the way of traditional Egyptian history, but you can fly cheap from most European countries, it’s warmer than Europe, and Kitesurfing at Seahorse Bay offers great flat water experience without the crowds that you’ll normally find at some other Kitesurf Spots in Hurghada itself like Kitesurfing in Soma Bay or Kiteboarding in Hurghada Bay .

Have you been Kiteboarding in Seahorse Bay? Contact us to help Kitesurfers to get high quality information and check out our favorite Spots for Kitesurfing in Africa .

View from Hotel to the Kitesurf Beach in Safaga

Safaga is a well-known flat water Kite Spot located 5 km South of Soma Bay, offering a more traditional Egyptian village with minimal tourist facilities. There are a few shops and cafes here and there, as well as a small market and a fish and vegetable market. Depending on the tide and the spot you choose to locate yourself, you’ll have large sandy beaches and sparkling turquoise waters surrounded by rugged terrain. Safaga is also a fantastic dive and snorkelling site so if the wind lets you down there’s still plenty to do

It’s not a spot for wave riders, but if you’re looking to learn or to practice kitesurfing in flat water then Safaga offers a huge area with warm water and consistent wind.

Atoll between Hamata and Berince

Hamata Kite Spot offers a huge flat water lagoon, crystal clear water, the best wind statistics in Egypt, and a laid back atmosphere. If you want to kitesurf and not a lot else, this could be the perfect spot for your next kiteboarding holiday. There is a large waist deep area which makes this an ideal spot for anyone learning to kitesurf, and all the local kite schools offer lessons as well as transfers to the spot as none of them are directly on the kite spot itself.

Hamata offers a little more greenery than a lot of the other Egyptian spots, and the mangroves on the upwind end of the lagoon really add to the beauty of this isolated kitesurfing paradise. With pretty consistent wind through the year this is definitely a good kite spot to put on the list to visit.

Lamp on the background of the sea and the coastline of Lamu Island Kenya

Lamu Island, situated off the coast of Kenya, is a true tropical paradise that has remained relatively untouched, offering a unique blend of rich culture, pristine beaches, and an idyllic setting for an unforgettable kitesurfing adventure. Far from the crowds, Lamu provides you with a serene kitesurfing spot where the azure Indian Ocean meets the warm African sun.

Diani Beach in the morning

Diani Beach is a very well known and highly regarded kite spot on the coast of Kenya, only 35km or so from Mombasa. For kitesurfing, Diani Beach offers a huge lagoon with warm, shallow, and flat water along with a reliable trade wind and 2 wind seasons. This is the right place to hang around and slow down with wide white sunny beaches, a tropical summer breeze, glittery blue water, and a wild touch of African authenticity. There are plenty of schools offering lessons here, and a variety of different spots to suit freestyle kiteboarding and wave riding too, so it welcomes beginners and pros alike.

Kiteguide our mission

How it all began

  • In 2016, seeking respite from the corporate grind, I embarked on a 6-month sabbatical, unwittingly stepping into the windswept world of kitesurfing on Brazil's north coast. The consistent gusts became both a challenge and inspiration.
  • Navigating the kitesurfing landscape revealed a stark reality. Every school claimed perfection, yet their clamors were loudest when guests were most needed—typically in the off-peak seasons. This dissonance sparked the inception of Kiteguide, a vision to provide genuine insights for the kitesurfing community beyond the marketing hype.
  • Amidst the waves, wind, and the struggle to pinpoint ideal spots, collaborations unfolded. Cäsar, a seasoned marketing expert, became a crucial ally. Sharing the vision, we set out to create a portal that transcended the superficial and aided enthusiasts in finding the perfect wind.
  • The journey faced its first test with a collaboration with a German database product information system company in Schmallenberg. However, misaligned interests, focused on bus travels rather than kitesurfing, prompted a reevaluation of the partnership.
  • Undeterred, the vision persisted. Enter Caspar, an experienced kitesurfer with deep connections in the community. His insights and structuring skills added depth to our endeavor. Collaborations with programmers, like Michal from Amazon, brought automation and scalability but also unforeseen challenges. Michal's departure left us with a complex Amazon Project, a testament to the unpredictable nature of our journey.
  • The story took another turn with Julien. As the owner of a software company, he joined the project, rebuilding it from scratch to ensure cost-effectiveness and scalability. Today, Julien is an integral part of the Kiteguide team—a friend, shareholder, and passionate supporter, despite not yet venturing into kitesurfing himself.
  • Our narrative is one of perseverance, collaboration, and adaptation. Kiteguide stands as a beacon in the kitesurfing community, shaped by the winds of Brazil, the challenges faced, and the enduring spirit of those who share our passion for the wind. The journey continues, inviting more enthusiasts to join the adventure, navigate the winds, and discover the essence of Kiteguide—a story that unfolds with every gust, every collaboration, and every chapter added to our ongoing tale.

What Is The Global Kitesports Association?

The GKA is a united, independent body formed by kitesurfing’s most established brands. They advocate that kiting as a sport can be enjoyed in all countries and in harmony with nature . As such, the GKA focuses on maintaining high safety standards on kiting equipment. They also assess the feasibility of suitable beaches for hosting professional kiting competitions.

Additionally, GKA provides reliable information regarding developments in the market, plus the opportunity for kite riders to achieve GKA goals. They do this by creating positive relationships with various national kiting associations and professional kite sports organizations.

A Short History

The GKA wasn’t founded to run competitive world tours. However, at the end of 2016, they were granted the right to run World Championship tours in the expression disciplines of kitesurfing. So, after three successful seasons of running the Kitesurf World Tour (wave and strapless freestyle), they launched the GKA Kite World Tour in 2018.

Kiteboarding Riders United (KRU) held the official freestyle competitions (World Kiteboarding Championships) under the license of the GKA. The racing classes are run by the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA).

However, 2019 saw significant changes in the world of professional kiteboarding. All competitions of expression disciplines are now managed by the GKA , including Wave/Strapless Freestyle (with a surfboard) and Freestyle (with a twin-tip kiteboard).

How Does GKA Promote And Support The Sport?

GKA promotes and supports kitesurfing in the following ways:

  • Working with all the major brands in kite sports.
  • Overseeing global kitesurfing competitions, ensuring they are run successfully and transparently.
  • Being inclusive: encouraging people of all ages, nationalities, and abilities to safely partake in the sport.
  • Ensuring the safety of all participants and fans.
  • Maintaining high safety standards for equipment (e.g., ISO Standard 21853:2020)
  • Performing Environmental Impact Assessments to ensure kitesports work in harmony with nature.
  • Working with governments to identify and preserve safe, open spaces for kitesports.
  • Collaborating with various water safety and government rescue services.

Benefits Of Being A Member Of The Kitesurfing Association

Being a member of the GKA has many benefits. Not only are the members part of a rapidly growing community, but they are privy to the latest developments and requirements in the sport. Other benefits of being a GKA member include the following:

  • Updates on safety measures, e.g., tracing stickers for kites and ISO Standards.
  • Knowing and understanding local laws regarding beach access.
  • Having the legal support of an international organization, should you face restrictions in your area, e.g., beach access cases.
  • Access to studies, e.g., Kitesurfing and Birds
  • Member support and advice relevant to your involvement in the industry.

Who Can Be A Member Of The GKA?

GKA membership is open to the following role players in the industry:

  • Manufacturers of kitesports equipment and apparel,
  • Distributors of kitesports equipment and clothing,
  • Organizers of kite events and kite travel, and
  • Regional authorities and legal entities (public and civil law).

Kitesurfing in the Olympics: The Future of the Sport?

Kiteboarding on water is deemed a sailing discipline and thus falls under the authority of World Sailing. World Sailing is the International Federation for Sailing, and all its forms are recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) . So, what does this mean for kitesurfing? Is it an Olympic sport?

Is Kitesurfing Going To The Olympics?

At long last, kitesurfing will make its first appearance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. A recent meeting with the IOC and World Sailing presidents reaffirmed this. All the Olympic sailing events will be held at Marina de Marseille, on France’s Mediterranean south coast. The kitesurfing class at the Olympics is called Formula Kite.

Benefits And Drawbacks Of Kitesurfing Being An Olympic Sport

Of course, it’s exciting that kitesurfing is finally considered an Olympic sport. But what are the potential benefits and drawbacks of this?

Benefits of kitesurfing being an Olympic sport

  • Millions of people will learn about kitesurfing at the Olympics.
  • We can expect an increase in people starting kitesurfing for recreational and competitive purposes.
  • The kitesurfing industry will grow.

Drawbacks of kitesurfing being an Olympic sport

  • Kitesurfing relies on wind. Since wind can’t be planned, kitesurfing risks being a “non-event” at the Olympics.
  • Some of the governing bodies of kitesports and sailing have differing views on some issues regarding the governance of kitesurfing. Their continued public disputes might lead to the IOC excluding kitesurfing as an Olympic Sport.
  • Only one pair (male and female) of kitesurfers may represent a nation at the Olympics. In addition, not all countries have professional male and female kitesurfers, excluding many nations from participating in the event at the Olympics.
  • There are many disciplines in kitesurfing, all requiring different equipment. This makes defining competition rules more challenging.
  • The IOC supports sports that can be enjoyed by millions. However, kitesurfing is an expensive sport, making it inaccessible to many.

Who Are The Top Kitesurfers To Watch For In Olympic Competitions?

The participants of Formula Kite in the Olympics have yet to be selected as they are still going through the qualifying process. However, the top 10 men’s and women’s rankings to date are as follows:

Formula Kite Men Rankings

  • Benoit Gomez, France
  • Riccardo Pianosi, Italy
  • Lorenzo Boschetti, Italy
  • Florian Gruber, Germany
  • Maximilian Maeder, Singapore
  • Bruno Lobo, Brazil
  • Theo De Ramecourt, France
  • Martin Dolenc, Croatia
  • Toni Vodisek, Slovenia
  • Alexander Ehlen, Monaco

Formula Kite Women’s Rankings

  • Lauriane Nolot, France
  • Gisela Pulido Borrell, Spain
  • Gal Zukerman, Israel
  • Poema Newland, France

Kitesurfing Competition 2023: What To Expect

With the Summer Olympics looming, we can expect intense competition in the Formula Kite ranks in 2023. However, there are plenty of other competitions and events among the other kitesurfing disciplines.

Who Are The Top Contenders For KiteFoil Championship Titles In 2023?

The top contenders for KiteFoil championship titles in 2023 are based on the 2022 rankings. Below are the men and women who ranked in the top 10 in 2022.

Kiteboarding World Rankings: The Best Of The Best

The kiteboarding world rankings list the top performers in each discipline of kiteboarding. According to the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA), the following athletes rank the best in their respective divisions:

How Are The Rankings Determined And Updated?

A kiteboarder’s rank is calculated by adding up their points from the events in which they participated. For example, first place gets 100 points, second place gets 99, and third place gets 98 points, etc. However, each event is star-rated up to six stars, with the star grading being a multiplicator for the ranking points .

For example, if the winner of a 3-star event gets 100 points, they will get 100 x 3 = 300 points added to their ranking. And a kiteboarder earning second place at a 2-star event will earn 99 x 2 = 198 points.

The rankings are updated with each event, so professionals should partake in as many events as possible.

The 2023 calendar for kitesurfing is packed with many events and competitions for different disciplines. The competitions are organized by international kiteboarding associations such as GKA and IKA. In addition, there is much anticipation and competition in the Formula Kite class to determine who will represent their respective nations at the 2024 Olympics.

'Fly the kite': A tour pro's consistency-boosting power draw feel, explained

Jimmy Stanger is one of the best driver's on the PGA Tour. But it wasn't always that way.

It's pretty common for tour players to undergo something of a transformation. Junior golfers grow up singinging big draws—it's their way of learning to hit the ball far, before the muscles in their upper body have fully developed. This was true even for the likes of Tiger Woods, who joked that as a junior golfer his fades were actually just "smaller draws."

Then, often around college for most players, they begin to fill out their upper body and their golf swing begins to change. They become less dependent on timing with their hands, find a ball flight that's more controlled, predictable, and dependable.

Stanger is a PGA Tour rookie who ranked fifth in total driving last season on the Korn Ferry Tour and is 18th in SG/off-the-teeso far this season. He's an elite driver of the ball by any standard, and he too went through a similar transformation—albeit a few years later than others.

"It was funny. The first couple years I was a professional golfer, I definitely was not an elite driver of the golf ball," he says. "It was a little sideways; I wasn't the longest; it was just overall inconsistent. I didn't quite know if it would draw or fade; it was more of a shotgun approach about getting it in play, and using my putter to play well."

Sensing an opportunity to improve, Stanger and his coach, Golf Digest Best in State Teacher John Scott Rattan, the former coach at the University of Virginia who recruited Stanger to play there, got some dialing-in his draw for more consistency.

Stanger is an ultra-talented athlete who always had a "beautiful golf swing," Rattan says. One of the key changes that upgraded the consistency of Stanger's powerful draw move was learning to turn his arms more around his body.

"He didn't have a lot of depth in his backswing. He would pick his arms slightly out and up, on the backswing, then drop them under," Rattan says.

Instead, Rattan says he and Stanger worked on getting his hands moving deeper and more around his body on the backswing, which propelled them back in front of him on the downswing (as you can see in the right).

When Stanger's arms tracked too vertically up on the backswing, they would then drop down too vertically behind his body on the downswing (as you can see on the left)

"It's a common move for players who like to draw it, but it relies a lot on your wrists," Rattan says. "Sometimes it'll draw; sometimes it'll hook, sometimes it'll push."

With his arms tracking deeper on the backswing, Stanger now had the freedom to turn his chest aggressively through the ball. Stanger says he feels like he grips the ground with his feet, and turns aggressively through. It's a move that makes the golf swing feel easy—a feeling he quickly learned to love.

"I've learned that it's more of a slingshot feeling," Stanger says. "All of a sudden, now I feel like I'm swinging and the club's just a kite that's following me. I'm just turning the body and the club falls."

Rattan adds: "He'll often talk of his chest turning his torso into his lead arm. His lead arm is the string, and the club is the kite," he says. "With his club and arms in a good position coming down, it gives him the freedom to rotate."

The combination of getting his arms deeper on the backswing, turning his torso into his lead arm on the downswing helps Stanger's arms and club move less out to the right, and more around him through the ball.

"It's something I'm still working to perfect, but hitting knockdown shots helps," Stanger says.

Knockdown shots have become part of his practice routine, which as Rattan explains, helps improve some technical areas of his swing, without taking away what feels natural.

"He has a big, free-flowing finish," Rattan says. "I love that. That's what the best drivers in the game have had. He's worked hard on some things in his golf swing, but that finish won't ever change.
