Jon rahm wins third dp world tour championship; rory mcilroy claims fourth season title, share this article.

dp world tour dubai golf

It was the Rahm and Rory show at the 2022 DP World Tour Championship.

Jon Rahm shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday to win the tour’s season finale in Dubai at 20 under, two shots ahead of Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren. With the win, he becomes the first player to win the tour championship for a third time.

Rory McIlroy’s lucky number this week at Jumeirah Golf Estates was four, as in, he’s now been crowned European Number One four times. McIlroy closed with a 68 for a solo fourth-place finish and clinched the points race when Matt Fitzpatrick tied for fifth. McIlroy earns the Harry Vardon trophy as a result, something he also took home in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

“It’s been seven years I last did it. This is my fourth one but it’s been a while, I’ve won three FedEx Cups since the last time I won this and it means a lot,” he said.

Only Colin Montgomerie (eight) and Seve Ballesteros (six) have more Vardon trophies.

For Rahm, this win marks his ninth DP World Tour victory and third worldwide title in 2022.

“Hopefully, people can stop telling it has been a bad year,” he said.

Rahm began the day with a one-shot lead and started his final 18 with three straight birdies. He bogeyed the fourth but added birdies on Nos. 7, 13 and 15. He now has three wins and four top-5s at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course.

“I like this course and this course likes me. I hope this is the third of many more,” he said.

How to watch the DP World Tour Championship: Live stream golf from anywhere

How to watch the dp world tour championship from anywhere in the world as rory mcilroy attempts to win the race to dubai for the fourth time in his career..

Ben Smith's picture

Jon Rahm will take a narrow one-shot lead into the final round of the DP World Tour Championship after firing a joint-low-round-of-the-day 65 on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

Rahm, who is bidding to win the season-ending tournament on the DP World Tour for a third time in his career, now finds himself at 15-under par and one shot clear of US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick , who despite finding water on the 18th recovered for par and a round of 70.

Rather fittingly for the DP World Tour, both Rahm and Fitzpatrick received Honorary Lifetime Membership to the circuit earlier this week following their respective US Open victories in 2021 and 2022.

McIlroy had a mixed bag to start his third round with two bogeys and an eagle on his first three holes, but he then caught fire just before the turn when very nearly holing his approach shots for eagles.

There is also another prize on the line on Sunday, realistically only for McIlroy and Fitzpatrick now, in the shape of the  DP World Tour Rankings .

McIlroy holds the aces right now, but Fitzpatrick is still very much in the mix.

Check out all the permutations for that here .

How to watch 2022 DP World Tour championship from anywhere

If you are currently abroad or not in the same country as the TV streaming service you are trying to use, you probably will not be able to watch the DP World Tour Championship because of geo-blocking, a technology that broadcasters use to restrict certain content to specific parts of the world.

However, you can circumvent geo-blocks by using a VPN, and ExpressVPN is one of the best.

Express VPN  is an easy to use VPN that lets you change your IP address, making it look like you are in a completely different country. It also encrypts your internet traffic to protect your privacy.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2023 DP World Tour Championship

1802127553

Rory McIlroy and Nicolai Hojgaard walked away the big winners from this week's DP World Tour Championship. McIlroy won the overall points title for the fifth time while Hojgaard was the winner of the Tour Championship with a 21-under total.

David Cannon

An already memorable 2023 season on the DP World Tour for Nicolai Hojgaard—in which he played in his first Ryder Cup—got even more so on Sunday at the DP World Tour Championship. The 22-year-old Dane closed out the final round at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai with a eight-under 64 to charge past overnight leader Matt Wallace and claim victory with a 21-under 267 performance, two shots better than Wallace, Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.

Hojgaard’s victory is the third of his career on the DP World Tour but his most lucrative. The first-place prize money payout was worth $3 million from an overall purse of $10.5 million. The payday from Sunday (€2,764,461 in Euros) amounts to more than 40 percent his entire career earnings to date on the DP World Tour (€6,380,134.75).

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer who competed in the DP World Tour’s season finale.

DP World Tour Championship Prize Money Payout

Who are the star names in the dp world tour championship.

Mike Hall

The 15th edition of the DP World Tour Championship once again concludes the season-long Race to Dubai at the Earth Course of Jumeirah Golf Estates .

Unlike 2022, the winner of the Race to Dubai has already been confirmed – Rory McIlroy claimed the Harry Vardon trophy a week early after another successful season on the Tour for the 34-year-old that included victories in the Dubai Desert Classic and Genesis Scottish Open.

While the prize money the four-time Major winner will receive for topping the standings for the fifth time has yet to be confirmed, the victor for the last four years has picked up $2m from the Race to Dubai bonus pool of $5m.

Last year, Jon Rahm beat Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren by two shots to claim the DP World Tour Championship title for the third time. That handed him a $3m windfall from the $10m purse, and it has increased to $10.5m this year, albeit with the same amount on offer to the winner.

Perhaps unsurprisingly considering its status, the event has the largest prize fund of any DP World Tour event and $1.5m more than the other four Rolex Series events over the season.

The purse is also $2.1m more than that being offered by the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic this week, highlighting its position as one of the biggest tournaments in the calendar, even though that’s not reflected in the number of Official World Golf Ranking points available in it, which is fewer than the tournament at Sea Island .

While the winner will see a sizeable boost to his bank account, the payday for the runner-up will be considerable, too, at $1.275m.

Below is the full prize money payout for the DP World Tour Championship.

As well as the defending champion the biggest name in the field is Rory McIlroy , and many more of the world's best players are in the 50-man field, too, including 2022 US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick , who is going in search of his third DP World Tour Championship title. and the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup winner Viktor Hovland .

Rory McIlroy has already claimed the Race to Dubai title

Other big names include six-time DP World Tour winner Tommy Fleetwood and Tom Kim, whose most recent start saw him claim victory at the Shriners Children’s Open. Major winner Shane Lowry and his Ryder Cup teammates Sepp Straka, Nicolai Hojgaard, Tyrrell Hatton and Robert MacIntyre also play.

Some players also have their sights set on a PGA Tour card as those who finish in the top 10 of the Race to Dubai standings, not otherwise exempt, will claim 2024 PGA Tour exemptions.

In prime position to earn their PGA Tour cards are Adrian Meronk, Ryan Fox, Victor Perez, Thorbjorn Olesen, Alexander Bjork, Sami Valimaki, MacIntyre, Jorge Campillo, Ryo Hisatsune and Rasmus Hojgaard.

Where Is The DP World Tour Championship Held?

The DP World Tour Championship is held at the Greg Norman-designed Earth Course. The course, which has held the tournament since it opened in 2009, takes inspiration from the parkland courses of Europe and the USA.

How Does The DP World Tour Championship Work?

The top 50 players in the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai rankings are eligible for the season-closing DP World Tour Championship, and every one of those players is competing in the 2023 edition. Like most other DP World Tour events, the action takes place over four rounds of stroke play.

The Match 2024 golf live stream: How to watch Rory McIlroy, Lexi Thompson, Max Homa and Rose Zhang on TV

For the first time ever, the match will feature both men and women competing against one another.

max-homa-rory-mcilroy-2023-open-g.jpg

Superstars from the PGA Tour and LPGA will be featured in the ninth edition of The Match as Rory McIlroy and Max Homa tee it up alongside Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang in the mixed-skins format. The charity golf exhibition welcomes the four golfers to The Park Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday evening.

Unlike the first eight editions of The Match, this iteration will be the first to feature women and the first to be held at The Park Golf Course; the Wynn in Las Vegas was the unofficial home of exhibition golf. Thompson and Zhang hope to impress in front of McIlroy and Homa, both of whom have experience in these type of events.

McIlroy was featured in The Match 7 with teammate Tiger Wood, but the two ultimately fell to Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in December 2022. Homa experienced a similar fate when he played in the Netflix Cup this past fall with Formula One driver Alex Albon when Thomas once again came away victorious.

Unlike previous versions of The Match, this one will not feature teams. Instead, the four golfers will compete by themselves across 12 holes of skins hoping to collect the most money for charity along the way.

The Match 9

Viewing information.

Date:  Monday, Feb. 26 |  Time  6:30 p.m. ET  Location:  The Park Golf Course — West Palm Beach, Florida Broadcast:  TNT |  Simulcast : TBS, truTV, HLN |  Live stream : Bleacher Report app

The Match will be contested under 12 holes of mixed skins format for the first time ever. Each hole will be worth a specified amount towards charity, with the golfer who raises the most amount by the end of the competition being declared the winner. Players will tee off from the same tee boxes on the four par 3s and use varying tee boxes for the men and women on the remaining holes.

Participants

Rory McIlroy: It has been a bit of an odd season so far for McIlroy, who claimed his fourth Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour in January. Since then, he has struggled with consistency on the PGA Tour, often flashing his brilliance but undoing his efforts with short stretches of poor play. If those types of runs materialize at The Match, they could hinder his chances of winning given the short 12-hole format.

Max Homa:  Homa's season has been defined by some good golf but not enough great golf through two months. He has notched three top-20 finishes with his best effort coming in the form of a T13 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Failing to contend in any of the California events or his hometown event, the WM Phoenix Open, Homa heads to the Florida Swing without a ton of momentum. Perhaps this exhibition can get the gears turning as he often thrives in front of an audience.

Lexi Thompson: Thompson has been solid since the Solheim Cup and made her presence known on the PGA Tour at the Shriners Children's Open. Nearly making the cut at the men's event, the American finished her 2023 LPGA season with three straight top-10 finishes. She notched a T6 at the Grant Thornton Invitational alongside Rickie Fowler in December and finished T16 in her lone start of 2024 in large part due to a poor final round.

Rose Zhang: The youngin' of the bunch, Zhang's game and personality will have a chance to shine on the big stage. The 20-year-old teamed up with Sahith Theegala at the Grant Thornton Invitational en route to a T9 result to end a memorable 2023 that included her second straight NCAA championship individual crown, a win at the Augusta National Women's Amateur and a triumph in her first start as a professional on the LPGA.

Picks, odds

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Rory McIlroy: +185
  • Max Homa: +240
  • Lexi Thompson: +370
  • Rose Zhang: +380

Underdogs have been the way to go in these style of tournaments given the made-for-TV product, so let's rock with Thompson. The putter could pose a problem, but she has ample length off the tee and will be playing from shorter yardages on the par 4s and par 5s than McIlroy and Homa, which should give her a considerable edge.

Luke Donald will serve as NBC’s lead analyst for coverage of the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches and Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.

It is a two-week assignment for Donald, the European Ryder Cup captain, to start the PGA TOUR's Florida Swing as NBC Sports continues to use a rotating cast of lead analysts in 2024. Donald is a previous winner of the Cognizant Classic.

“I love the game of golf so I’m so thankful to have been given this opportunity and chance to take on the role of lead analyst for NBC Sports over the next two weeks, combining my passion for the sport with my knowledge as a player to deliver inside-the-ropes insight to the national U.S. audience,” Donald said in an NBC press release annoucing the news. “This is a significant opportunity for me, and I’m eager to bring my perspective to the coverage while, at the same time, learning from my fellow broadcast and production team members.”

Among the personalities that NBC Sports has utilized as lead analysts this season include four-time PGA TOUR winner Kevin Kisner, caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay and Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee. Donald does not have prior broadcasting experience.

Donald, the five-time TOUR winner and former world No. 1, captained the European Ryder Cup team to a convincing 16.5-11.5 victory last fall at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome. Donald will captain the European Team again in 2025 at Bethpage Black, marking the first multiple-time Ryder Cup captain for the Europeans since Bernard Gallacher captained three consecutive teams from 1991-95.

Donald has split time between the DP World Tour and the PGA TOUR this season. He played twice on the DP World Tour during their stretch in Dubai before playing the WM Phoenix Open on a sponsor exemption, where he missed the cut.
