The new Bodmin jail attraction uses special effects to chart the lives and deaths of former inmates.

Inside the revamped Bodmin jail, one of Britain's 'most haunted' buildings

18th-century prison with gory history reopens as £8.5m visitor attraction in Cornwall

Most visitors to Cornwall head to the surf beaches, the picturesque fishing harbours, art galleries, gardens or castles in search of light and joy.

However, a murkier side of life in the south-west of Britain is being told from within the towering granite walls of an 18th-century prison, which is reopening as a new visitor attraction on Thursday.

The £8.5m Bodmin jail recounts tales of crime and punishment in Cornwall from the 1700s to the early 20th century. Visitors are treated, if that is the right way to put it, to a subterranean “dark walk” that uses special effects to expose the lives and deaths of some of those once imprisoned here.

They are invited to stroll in and out of the cells where prisoners once lived and to inspect the artefacts found in excavations of the prison including bunches of rusty keys and even what might be the skull of the fabled Beast of Bodmin .

The most daring can take part in paranormal events or watch horror films, as the jail claims to be one of the most haunted places in the UK.

Kirsten Honey, the paranormal manager at Bodmin jail, adjusts a creepy artefact.

For those who want to immerse themselves, a £38.5m four-star boutique hotel is due to open early next year. Each room comprises three former cells: one for the bedroom, one the living area and the third the bathroom.

Martin Lyall, the jail’s general manager, accepted it was a challenging time to open a tourist attraction but said the “staycation” market had been strong in Cornwall this summer.

“Many people were reporting levels above 2019. We think that market may stay strong into 2021 and even 2022. The future is promising,” he said.

It will also be a boost to Bodmin, often a town that visitors whizz past on their way to the beach or Cornwall’s better-known attractions such as the Eden Project and St Michael’s Mount . Post-Covid it is expected that about 30 people will work at the attraction and more than 50 at the hotel.

Visitors can enter the “dark walk” element of the attraction through a doorway hidden by a bookshelf. Stories of mining, smuggling and wrecking (when boats were lured on to the rocky coastline) are told.

But it may be the individual stories of the prisoners who were housed in the jail between 1779 and 1927 that visitors find the most compelling. Such as that of brothers William and James Lightfoot, who were convicted in 1840 of the highway robbery of merchant Neville Norway on the road between Bodmin and Wadebridge. More than 20,000 came to watch their execution and a special train was laid on so people would not miss out.

Spooky lighting in a former cell.

Or that of Selina Wadge, who was hanged at the age of 28 in 1878 for the murder of her son, whom she was said to have dropped into a well on Bodmin moor. Her final words were: “Lord deliver me from this miserable world.”

More than 35,000 prisoners were held at the jail, including 341 children. Fifty-five people, eight of them women, were hanged within the walls, some for heinous crimes such as murder (one woman, Sarah Polgrean, poisoned her husband, Henry, with arsenic hidden in a pat of butter), others for what through modern eyes seemed much more minor, such as sheep rustling or setting fire to a neighbour’s crop. The last execution took place in 1909.

When the prison opened conditions were particularly brutal. Men, women and children were kept in communal cells and one in four died of typhoid.

Later conditions were improved and Bodmin claims to be the first jail in Britain to hold prisoners in individual cells. Sanitation was better, inmates were paid to work, and death, at last unintended ones, became more uncommon.

Bodmin jail reopens this week.

One the most eye-catching exhibits is the skull of a creature that some believe is the Beast of Bodmin. It was found 100 years ago during the demolition of a hospital wing.

Close to it is an account written by a French prisoner of war, Capt Mathieu Pringy, who claimed that during a trip out from the jail in the 1790s he encountered the beast, a creature with the “largest pair of piercing eyes” and “teeth larger than daggers.”

But perhaps equally as impressive and evocative is the collection of keys. The hefty one for the main gate is 22cm long and weighs 0.5kg. Another display holds a couple of dozen cell door keys found during a 2005 excavation of the jail’s execution pit. The thought is that warders may have ceremonially thrown them into the pit, perhaps when the prison finally closed.

Haunted (yes, I think we were!)

Went to the very first “Haunted” at the jail last night. It was a great experience from start to finish. Joe and his team are very friendly and knowledgeable and put you at ease immediately. Haunted is about connecting to the space and seeing if you can communicate with spirit after switching off from our busy, tech filled, modern day life. Dowsing rods, pendulums and other items are available to use at your own discretion and you do not have to take part in anything you are uncomfortable with! An absolutely fantastic experience, we definitely had a few things happen that we can’t explain away. Go in with an open mind and good intentions and even the most sceptical might find themselves questioning their belief in the paranormal!

Thank you for your positive review. We're glad to hear you had such a fantastic experience and we will pass this feedback onto the Paranormal Team. We hope to see you again! Kind Regards, The Bodmin Jail Team

Our tour guide Gemma was fantastic, sometimes people find the perfect job, and Gemma is definitely one. So much passion and enthusiasm for the tour, very engaging and interesting. We throughly enjoyed our visit.

Thank you so much for your review. We are incredibly proud of our award winning Heritage Guides and will pass this lovely feedback on to Gemma. We hope to see you again! Kind Regards, The Bodmin Jail Team

We did a paranormal tour, which was really interesting and informative, I was a little apprehensive to start with, but ended up enjoying the experience. Highly recommended

I was really pleasantly surprised by the jail, and it was one of the highlights during our week in Cornwall. The effects were spectacular and it was very informative. Not recommended for children that scare easy, but it is fully pushchair/wheelchair accessible. Worth the money!

Thank you for your positive review Grace. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your time here and that we exceeded your expectations! We hope to see you again. Kind Regards, The Bodmin Jail Team

We visited the jail on 7th Sept and had the pleasure of experiencing the guided tour and paranormal evening tour. The team were very knowledgable and their passion for the jail and its history really made this an incredible experience. We felt safe at all times yet it was an exciting tour, so glad we did this and highly recommend.

We experienced a guided heritage tour on Monday 4th September and our tour guide was Carl. Myself, My partner and our 11-year-old daughter all thoroughly enjoyed the experience from start to finish. Starting from the beginning. I'd highly recommend familiarising yourself with the area on Google Maps to gauge an idea of parking. There is no on site parking for the attraction, there are very limited space perhaps 4/5 on the road outside the venue. I believe there is parking available at a nearby Sainsbury's store but please do check this before arriving. Once parked we headed to the reception area. There was no queue or anyone waiting it was very quiet. We booked the 1pm tour. We were greeted by happy, friendly staff who gave us our heritage tour lanyard and escorted to the waiting area. Within a few minutes Carl, our tour guide made an appearance and he was so full of energy. We had a countdown on the wall that built up suspense before the experience. We were then led through to the Dark Wall experience. I won't put any spoilers in here. This is the only area where photography and video are not allowed but it is a fantastic start to the tour. The effects are absolutely awesome. We were mesmerised. Once the Dark Walk was over we were then guided to the jail where Carl filled us with facts and interacted with our small group fantastically. There were only 5 of us, i'm sure there's usually larger groups but this wasn't a problem. Carl was fab and after being taken to each area in date order i'd liked to have spent a couple of minutes in each area to get a feel for it. I felt that we were filled with facts and then moved on swiftly so didn't feel we had much time to take everything in and then look for ourselves. Although. Once the talk about that area was over he allowed us time to revisit and take photo's but felt like we missed a lot. I don't think we visited every doorway but I could be wrong. My daughter needed the toilet at this point and the closest one wasn't working so we had to head back to the entrance so personally I missed the opportunity to have a look back around. At this point we'd expressed our interest in the paranormal to our tour guide who then made us aware that he was part of the paranormal team. From that point onwards we had a bit of a paranormal connection. We had paranormal devices with us at the time and some of the activity coming through was really on point. We were led to the next area which was then more based on paranormal activity and our devices really picked up activity during this part of the tour. it was really interesting to see some of the artifacts from the time period. We followed the story of certain people throughout the tour, It was really interesting. This story led to the ending and execution of one of the ladies and the cinematics of this experience were fantastic. Again, no spoilers here. The final part of the tour took us into the execution pit. Very sobering. It is the only working Execution pit in the UK and during this time. Our paranormal devices picked up the name Will twice and the word 'Rope' - I showed our tour guide and he pointed to the wall..... The last person to be executed at the pit was William Hampton. Will - Rope! I will post the screenshots in my photos. The other members of our tour left and we spent a few moments speaking to Carl our guide after the tour had ended and he told us about all the paranormal experiences he has had at the jail. Simply fascinating. The tour ended. At this point, I'd quite like to have had another look in the jail without a guide to read all the information and gather our thoughts about what we'd learned. We popped into the gift shop after our experience which was reasonably priced for an attraction. We purchased a fridge magnet for £3.50 and 2 sticks of rock with Bodmin jail on them for £1.20 each. We were told by our tour guide that we could visit the hotel and walk around to have a look and get a view of the moore. We did this and the staff were more than happy to point us in the right direction. We didn't feel like we were intruding either. Overall, I'd highly recommend a visit and a guided one at that but still, a visit nonetheless. I'm very interested in taking part in the paranormal activities they hold. I think you need to use your discretion on what age your child must be to visit. There are some dark moments but my daughter is 11 and was very into it the whole way. 10/10 Would recommend and will be back to visit again.

The ghosts of Bodmin Jail

Bodmin jail, bodmin, cornwall, brief history of bodmin jail.

This ominous-looking Bodmin Jail was originally built for King George III in 1779 by the prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars. Inmates transported the 20,000 tonnes of granite it took to construct the jail, from Bodmin’s “Cuckoo Quarry”.

Due to chronic overcrowding, the prison was extended several times in the 1800s until it was finally closed in 1927.

During the First World War, the jail played host to the Domesday Book and state papers. It was also reported that it held the crown jewels for a time.

During its darkest times as a place of punishment, there were 55 prisoners executed by hanging between 1785 – 1909.

In 1844 a crowd of over 250,000 gathered to watch the execution of the Lightfoot brothers (William and James), who were convicted for the brutal robbery and murder of a local well-known timber merchant (Neville Norway). Such was the clamour the watch the executions unfold, train carriages carrying around 1,100 people had stopped on the railway that ran alongside the jail.

The last hanging was held here back in 1909 and was for a William Hampton. The hanging was a private affair with only prison staff, the Governor, High Sheriff, Mayor, and local Vicar present.

Today the gaol has been renovated to encompass a 4-star boutique hotel (opened in February 2021), which includes 70 rooms, a bar, and a restaurant. The Bodmin Jail attraction is also a new addition to the jail, which is an immersive experience taking you back in time to the 18th and 19th century Cornwall penal system.

Ghosts of Bodmin Gaol

Many of the souls that lost their lives on the noose remain. The spirit of Matthew Weeks (executed in 1844 for murdering his lover Charlotte Dymond) is said to have been seen on several occasions, as he wanders around the jail pleading his innocence.

Another famous ghost of Bodmin Gaol is Selina Wadge. She was hanged for the murder of her younger disabled son in 1887. It has been said that she tries to grab any young children visiting the jail and also suppresses her feeling upon pregnant women.

One of either William or James Lightfoot has been seen down in the ground floor cells. They were both hanged for the murder of Nevell Norway. Another ghost that has been seen is that of Anne Jefferies who roams around the jail. Anne was left to starve to death as she did not admit to being a witch. It was 3 months until she died, leading many to believe she did, in fact, have supernatural powers.

A figure of a priest has been seen in the chapel area. Ghostly apparitions have been witnessed in the bar/restaurant area and mediums have come into contact with several spirits including one of a prostitute who was wrongfully executed. In the area where they housed naval prisoners, a thin gaunt-looking man has been seen in one of the cells.

Around the jail many visitors and staff often report the feeling of being watched, orbs have been seen down the corridors, footsteps have been heard, voices, rattling keys, and people feeling as though they’re being touched.

Many people have reported feeling tugging at their clothes and a popular experience is that of children screaming in the lower ground floor cells. In the naval area, stones have been thrown at the current owners, and loud bangs have been heard inside the empty jail from the people outside.

Bodmin Jail Ghosts

Bodmin Jail, a foreboding structure with a dark past of death and despair, is widely regarded as one of Cornwall’s most haunted buildings and one of the most haunted jails in the world .

Originally built for King George III in 1779, a number of spirits are said to haunt this oppressive jail.

Table of Contents

History of bodmin jail, ghost tours and events, bodmin jail hotel.

Bodmin Jail, located in Cornwall, was designed by Sir John Call and constructed in 1779 by prisoners of war.

The jail was a result of the ground-breaking Prison Reform during the reign of King George III, with more than 20,000 tonnes of local granite used in its construction.

It was the first British prison to introduce individual cells for prisoners, and it remained operational for 150 years. During this time, 55 public hangings took place.

Over the years, the jail experienced overcrowding, leading to several extensions and a completely new building replacing the original in 1861 (Spooky Isles) .

Among the first prisoners to face the gallows at Bodmin Jail were William Lee and John Vanstone, both convicted of burglary. The last hanging took place in July 1909.

In 1927, the jail closed, leaving Cornwall without a prison ever since.

One of the most well-known ghosts of Bodmin Jail is the spirit of Matthew Weeks. He was executed in 1844 for the murder of his lover, Charlotte Dymond.

It has been reported that the ghost of Matthew wanders around the jail, pleading his innocence to those who encounter him. He has been seen on several occasions, making his presence felt in dark corners of the jail.

Another famous ghost of Bodmin Jail is that of Selina Wadge, who is also said to haunt the site. She makes her presence felt to pregnant women and also tugs on the clothes of young children.

Hanged at the age of 28 in 1878 for the murder of her son, her final words were “Lord deliver me from this miserable world” ( The Guardian ). Wadge is said to have dropped her son into a well on Bodmin Moor in a desperate attempt to survive during difficult times.

Selina was a young single mother of two disabled boys, struggling to provide for her family. The tragic death of her youngest boy, Harry, led to her arrest and execution at Bodmin Jail.

A visitor managed to capture the image of an ‘ agitated woman ‘ on their camera, who many believe to be the spirit of Wadge. This paranormal activity took place in the Naval Wing of the jail, an area known for frequent ghostly occurrences and where a gaunt man has been seen in one of the dark cells.

Beyond the well-known spirits of Matthew Weeks and Selina Wadge, the jail has a long history of unexplained phenomena and ghostly sightings. Many who have lost their lives within the jail’s walls are believed to still linger, adding to the chilling ambiance of the historic site.

It is believed that brothers William and James Lightfoot, who were hanged for the murder of Nevell Norway, are active in the cells.

Ann Jeffries, accused of being a witch and left to starve to death, also haunts the building. It is alleged it took her three months to die, further fuelling the belief that she was indeed practising witchcraft.

A ghostly warden named George is also said to wander the building, ensuring order is kept from beyond the veil. The rattling of his keys is regularly heard, whilst unexplained voices, cold spots and the feeling of being watched have also been reported.

A priest has been seen on several occasions in the chapel area.

Bodmin Jail, a historic prison in Cornwall, offers a Ghost Walk every Wednesday. This eerie experience takes visitors through the jail’s haunted history, providing insight into the paranormal activity that has been reported within its walls.

The Ghost Walk starts at 8.30pm and lasts for three hours, making it an unforgettable evening for those who enjoy exploring the world of the supernatural.

For those who want to delve deeper into the supernatural occurrences at Bodmin Jail, the Ghost Hunting Night offers a chance to take part in a paranormal investigation.

Held on the last Saturday of every month, this four-hour event begins at 9pm and requires participants to be 18 years or older. Visitors can explore the jail’s most haunted locations and attempt to communicate with the spirits that are said to linger within the prison.

The site has undergone significant renovations, transforming parts of it into a boutique hotel.

The once ruined cells of the Grade II listed building have been transformed into 70 luxury guest suites, a bar and a restaurant.

Each room comprises of three former cells, which are now stylish bedrooms complete with the prison’s original doors and bars on the windows. Guests can expect a luxurious experience, complete with modern fixtures and fittings and underfloor heating.

The hotel is situated in the perfect location for you to explore all that Cornwall has to offer, including a stunning choice of local Cornish beaches.

Jamaica Inn

Hauntingly Good Ghost Tours at the Inn!

16 March 2015

For anyone with an interest in the supernatural- or just an appetite for good old fashioned ghost stories- the Jamaica Inn has some truly spirited events lined up in the coming weeks and months! Do you fancy a chilling access all areas tour of the Inn, with the best of ghostly guides?  Add a haunted lake and the echo of clanking chains at Bodmin Jail and you have a truly ghoulish delight.

Whether it’s your first visit, or you keep haunting the place, we can’t think of any more fitting way to explore the Jamaica Inn. In fact, our most famous resident of all, Daphne Du Maurier, was equally enthralled by local ghost tales. Taking cover in the Inn on a foggy night in 1930, she was enthralled by the dark tales of spirits and smugglers told to her by the local rector. Such stories inspired her own writing in the following years.

Fast forward to the 21st Century and for all our technology, those at the Inn are still fascinated by gruesome tales from the past and odd goings on. Even those who’ll tell you I “don’t believe in ghosts” report to having very different feelings on a dark night or a particular spot in the hotel.

The stories come and go, but a handful “regulars” keep appearing -and we don’t mean local  ramblers in search of a quiet pint. A murdered guest, who left his ale unfinished on the bar is one of the most common sightings. Press interest hit a peak in 1911, with various locals around the Inn having seen a lone figure seated on a wall who wouldn’t move or utter a single word. Seconds later he would be gone. The more observant witnesses noticed with horror that he was an uncanny match to the man found murdered many years earlier.

Even one of the Inn’s least flappable managers, former Household Cavalry man Mr Groes, felt uneasy in certain parts of the premises. In the location of the old engine room, he constantly felt a menacing presence. Indeed, in spite of being shy to admit to such irrational fears, Groes found himself constantly looking over his shoulder by the old engine room. He was relieved to discover that his staff felt exactly the same, against all their rational instincts.

Who has been watching all these years? From the sound of spectral hooves on the road to invisible beings and bewildered staff members, we could reveal dozens of creepy goings on, but why spoil the surprise? Amanda Keal’s special two day Ghost Hunt at the Inn should be a chilling treat for anyone with steady enough nerves to find out more.

This will be an access all areas search for the supernatural in expert hands, taking you not only into the secret corners of the Jamaica Inn, but into the dark recesses of Bodmin Jail and the drowned visions of a local mystery lake. A special overnight stay and ghost tour package runs on the 21st and 22nd of March, with other ghostly events following in May, June, September and October. Call 01566 86250 to book your haunting break now!

Do you dare to miss out? We suggest you bring a torch, a crucifix and someone to cling tightly too!

A History Of Bodmin Jail

Found on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall is the Bodmin Jail Hotel. It’s a former jail and the spine-tingling location of plenty of paranormal activity. This old building has a rich tapestry of fascinating history. It spans over two centuries since its erection in 1779.

When they first built the jail, they called it Bodmin Gaol. They built the jail as part of the Prison Reform under the reign of King George III. It offers an important glimpse into the history of Georgian and Victorian crime.

Part of what makes this jail unique is that its design was an architectural milestone. The reason is that it was one of the first modern jails in the UK. It introduced single cells, segregated areas that separated men and women. And access to hot water and light spaces where prisoners lived and worked.

The population at Bodmin Gaol was low for the first two decades of its existence. But by 1820, the jail became overcrowded and had to undergo serious renovations until 1850. Because of the spike in population, there was a need to separate the prisoners into categories or classes. Finally, there would be over 20 categories that all required their sleeping areas and workshops.

During the reign of Queen Victoria, they built a new prison on the site of Bodmin Jail. And they took the original building down. The new prison had ample room for the inmates, with over 220 prison cells. They designed it with separate wings for men and women, a chapel, and much more.

The old gaol is the perfect place for a hotbed of supernatural activity. But people say the souls of lost prisoners aren’t the only reason Bodmin Jail’s haunted. Bodmin Gaol has a much darker history than simply housing inmates.

The jail was the site for the execution of a shocking 55 prisoners between 1785 and 1909. And many of the hangings attract large crowds of people. There’s no wonder some of these spirits have lingered on the grounds of Bodmin Jail. They’re likely after revenge for the people who jeered at them in their last moments.

The last execution occurred at Bodmin Gaol in 1909 when they hanged William Hampton. The rumour is that William took the life of his young lover after an argument which led to his unfortunate hanging. It may be interesting to note that William wasn’t only the last person hanged at Bodmin Jail. He was the last person hanged in all of Cornwall.

From jail to the Bodmin Jail Hotel

Over time, Bodmin would see a decline in the population of prisoners that passed through its halls. Bodmin lost its original purpose because of this decline and the closure of the woman’s jail in 1911. In 1927, the jail decommissioned and closed down.

In more recent times, the Jail has undergone numerous renovations. And it’s recognized as the Bodmin Jail Hotel today.

This 4-star boutique hotel in Cornwall has a more contemporary design. But it has still kept some of the jail’s original features. It has around 70 hotel rooms for guests who are interested in the haunted history of Bodmin Gaol. And, if you’re going to stay at this luxury hotel, remember to try the fine dining options. You can eat at the Chapel restaurant or try the delectable drinks at the Champagne bar.

The Ghostly Residents Of Bodmin Jail Hotel

The Bodmin Jail Hotel is known for its ghostly residents. The ghosts have lingered long after time erased the original jail. Some of the most prominent ghosts that roam the hotel’s halls include Matthew Weeks and Selina Wadge. But their macabre stories will leave your blood running cold.

Because of its heightened activity, Bodmin Jail Hotel has become a visitor attraction. For amateur ghost hunters and professional paranormal investigators alike. Are you brave enough to take a ghost tour or stay the night? If so, remember to take your ghost-hunting equipment with you. You may just be one of the lucky few who catches the source of all those bumps in the night.

Matthew Weeks

Matthew Weeks was one of the unlucky prisoners executed in jail in 1844. They hanged Matthew for the terrible crime of murdering his lover, Charlotte. And although his body may be dead and buried, his spirit is said to live on. And he roams the halls of the Bodmin Jail Hotel.

Whether Matthew is looking for vengeance or redemption remains a mystery. All we know is that his ghostly form has become integral to the hotel.

William and James Lightfoot

The Lightfoot brothers William and James were both executed for the murder of Nevell Norway. And it’s rumoured that neither of them has the closure their spirits need to move on.

You can find at least one of the brothers haunting the ground floor cells of Bodmin Gaol. But you may need to find out where the other will appear. But it’s still around the area of their imprisonment. They are waiting for the perfect time to strike and take revenge on those who executed them.

Anne Jeffries

Anne Jeffries, accused of being a witch, is one of the few women to haunt the old jail. Anne suffered a slow and agonizing death because she refused to admit to her supposed crimes. She was left to starve for three months in her prison cell until she eventually perished.

Some paranormal enthusiasts believe Anne has supposed supernatural abilities. And she willed her spirit to stay behind as a testament to the injustices she faced.

Selina Wadge

Selina Wadge may be the most active spectre of all! They hanged her in 1878 after murdering her illegitimate child. Several guests have noted seeing her ghost hanging around the old jail. Young visitors have even reported being grabbed by the horrifying apparition. In contrast, pregnant guests have felt odd sensations of being watched.

It’s unclear if her actions are motivated by anger or regret. But people spot Selina’s ghost around the grounds. And she is the most famous resident of the hotel.

Are there guided ghost or paranormal tours at Bodmin Jail?

Of course, there are plenty of paranormal tours at Bodmin, including the Ghost Walk and Ghost Tours. You can even hire your own private paranormal investigation group. Extra members may help you capture some eerie phenomena! Be sure to book your tickets in advance, though. As this haunted location is popular, there is limited space on most of the tours.

Can I stay for an overnight ghost hunt at Bodmin Jail?

Besides renting a room at the Bodmin Hotel, you won’t get to sleep over in the old jail. But, some paranormal investigators have had the chance to ghost hunt later in the day. You may get lucky if you enquire about this with the hotel staff.

Are there any other haunted prisons?

Yes, there are many haunted prisons such as Littledean Jail, Shepton Mallet Prison, Shrewsbury Prison, and Ruthin Gaol.

Inside the new £50m Cornwall hotel in the UK’s ‘most haunted building’ – opening in February

  • Kara Godfrey

YOU can now stay at the UK's "most haunted building" as a former jail is to open as a hotel in Cornwall.

The Bodmin Jail Hotel is to welcome guests from February 2021 - where you will be staying inside the former cells

Bodmin Jail has been transformed into a hotel - and you can stay next year

Following a £50m renovation, the new hotel keeps many of the features of the 18th century prison.

The bedrooms have been created using three of the former cells combined, with lavish ensuite bathrooms inside.

Options include Classic Rooms and Family Rooms, as well as the Governor’s bedrooms which have access to the private Executive Lounge.

Take your dog along too - they offer dog-friendly getaways with pets being given beds, treats as well as breakfast.

The rooms are made up of former prison cells

The former corridors of the jail have retained their original character, although now have a huge glass ceiling above it.

You can dine at the on-site restaurant The Chapel Restaurant or the Jolly Hangman Tavern.

The Chapel Bar serves a range of cocktails and gins, as well as daily afternoon tea between 2pm and 4pm.

You can even get married there with venues available for up to 300 people, although this will be on hold depending on the pandemic.

The new hotel will be opening in February 2021 but you can book now

The jail was once used to house the Crown Jewels, before the prison closed in 1927, but you can go on tours of the rest of the jail which are available on-site.

One-night at The Bodmin Jail Hotel starts from £130, while tickets for the Bodmin Jail Visitor Attraction which includes an overnight stay and breakfast or dinner start from £175 for two.

It is also a great place to stay to explore Cornwall, including the Bodmin Moor or the Eden Project.

Book your stay at The Bodmin Jail Hotel from February 12 here .
