What is Aeroplan?

Aeroplan is the frequent flyer program of Air Canada. You can use Aeroplan miles to book award flights on Air Canada or on any of the airline’s partners—that includes other Star Alliance airlines like United and Lufthansa, as well as Air Canada’s unique non-alliance partners like Etihad or Emirates.

Of the major transferable points currencies, Chase, American Express, and Capital One points can be transferred to Aeroplan at a one-to-one (1:1) ratio. Here are guides on how to transfer points from American Express , Chase , and Capital One to airline loyalty programs.

How to book flights through Air Canada Aeroplan

Step 1: go to air canada’s website and log in with your aeroplan account number..

air canada book travel

If you don’t have an Aeroplan account, make one by hovering over “Sign in” in the upper-right corner, and clicking “Join Aeroplan” in the drop down menu.

Step 2: Go to the flight search engine and click on the “Book with points” box.

air canada book travel

Step 3: Enter your departure airport and your arrival airport, and pick your departure date.

Depending on your itinerary, you might have better luck finding award availability by searching for one-way flights and one seat at a time.

Once you find available flights for your desired departure and return, you can then try booking the flights as a roundtrip—or even as a multi-city trip—on one reservation. (Write down flight numbers and other details as you come across available flights, then use that info to make your complete booking.) The same goes for the number of seats you need.

Step 4: Browse through the flight options.

air canada book travel

In Aeroplan’s search engine, you can filter by airline, airports, number of stops, etc. If you’re looking specifically for business class or first class flights, you can select “Exclude: mixed cabin” under the “more options” drop-down menu. That way, you can filter out flight routings that are partially in economy class.

If you can’t find a flight routing you like, or if the points costs are too high, click the “Modify” button at the top. You might try a different date, or a different departure or arrival airport.

air canada book travel

The trick to finding award space—that is, an available plane seat bookable with points—is to be flexible. By traveling a day or two earlier or later, or flying into an airport close to your final destination, you may find more opportunities to fly in the cabin you want for the most affordable amount of points.

Step 5: Select a flight and review your options for fare types.

Once you’ve found a routing that looks good to you, the website will prompt you to choose between different fare types.

air canada book travel

For business class and first class flight awards booked through Aeroplan, a Flexible Reward will cost more points, but it will be exactly that: flexible. If you need to change your dates, you’ll only need to pay any fare differences in miles and taxes; if necessary, you can get a refund on the whole thing for free. The cheaper “Lowest Reward” will require a fee for changes and refunds.

air canada book travel

On the other hand, for economy tickets, you’ll have three options. Review them closely and weigh the pros and cons of each, as well as what’s most valuable to you when you travel. Do you need the flexibility of a refundable award? Or are you committed to your date and route? As is the case with a business class or a first class award, more flexibility will cost you more points.

Step 6: Choose your fare type and finalize your booking.

air canada book travel

When you select a fare type, you’ll be taken to a “Trip review” page, where you can choose to pay with a mix of points and cash. If you want to cover the cash portion of your award flight (the taxes and fees) with points, you can do that; if you want to save some points and pay a bit more in cash, you can do that too. This could be a helpful option if you’re a few miles away from the standard award cost in miles, or if you just want to save some miles for another day.

Then proceed with your booking as you normally would. Enter your passenger details and payment information, and make your purchase. The points you selected to pay will be deducted from your account, and you’ll get a booking confirmation email in your inbox.

Pro-tip: Pay more in fees, but less in miles. You might get better value out of it.

Aeroplan’s option to modify how much you pay in miles vs. in taxes and fees could be a way for you to get more value out of your points and miles. You just have to do a little bit of math.

Anecdotally, I once booked an Aeroplan award flight for travel on Lufthansa first class, from Athens to New York via Munich—a ticket that would have cost me $7,717 had I paid in cash. The award was originally priced at 100,000 Aeroplan points and about $150 in taxes and fees. Instead, I chose to pay 80,000 points and $395.44.

To determine which booking would be a better value, I first calculated the cents per point (CPP)—the value of a point when I use it to book a flight instead of paying for the flight in cash—in each scenario. I took the full cash price of the ticket and subtracted from it the amount I had to pay in fees for the award booking; then I divided that difference by the number of miles I had to pay. That yields a decimal, which I multiply by 100 to get a cent value.

Put more simply, here’s that math as a formula:

Cost per point in cents = ((Cash price of the flight - the taxes and fees to be paid in cash for an award booking) / the cost in miles) x 100

So for the original award, the math looks like this:

((7717 - 150) / 100,000) x 100 = 7.57

And for the award I ultimately booked:

((7717 - 395.44) / 80,000) x 100 = 9.15

In the end, I came out ahead with a value of about nine cents per point for the booking, which is pretty amazing. Before booking, I did transfer 100,000 Amex points to Aeroplan, thinking I would redeem for the original award price, but I’m glad I mixed it up. As I write this, I have a balance of 20,000 Aeroplan points that I can’t transfer back to Amex, but I’m not worried. I’ll redeem that for another award soon enough. (Note that Aeroplan points expire after 18 months of account inactivity, but you can reset that timer by redeeming or transferring points.)

Why should I book award flights via Aeroplan?

Simply put: You can often maximize the value of your points and miles by using Aeroplan to book travel on its partner airlines like United, Lufthansa, ANA, and more.

It varies from program to program, but airlines tend to value flights on their own metal (that’s to say: on their own planes) more highly than they do flights on partner airlines. Which is why—sometimes, not always—you can increase the value you get out of your points and miles by using Aeroplan to book an award flight on one of its more than fifty airline partners.

For example, a one-way flight in economy on United from San Francisco to Honolulu, booked through United MileagePlus could cost anywhere between 25,000 miles to 41,100 miles and $5.60 in taxes and fees.

A screenshot of the United MileagePlus award search tool showing flights from San Francisco to Honolulu

That same one-way flight—let’s use United 300, departing at 2:10 PM on March 20—booked through Aeroplan costs only 12,500 miles and about US$45 in taxes and fees. That’s half of the points cost.

A screenshot of the flight award search tool on Aeroplan showing options for flights from San Francisco to Honolulu

Of course, all that doesn’t matter if you only have miles with one airline and not another. But in this example, both United miles and Aeroplan points can be transferred from Chase . So if you had 25,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ready to go, you could get a single one-way flight to Honolulu if you booked through United at the cost of 25,000 miles, or two one-way flights to Honolulu if you booked through Aeroplan at the cost of 12,500 points a ticket.

As always, your mileage may vary. Aeroplan prices its award flights based on distance, i.e. the farther you travel, the more points it’ll cost you. Meanwhile, United implements what’s called “dynamic award pricing,” which means that the cost in miles when booking award flights through United MileagePlus varies from day to day, route to route. (For example, at the time of writing, United flight 901 from San Francisco to London-Heathrow on March 20 costs 40,000 Aeroplan points, but only 33,400 United miles.)

Over the years, Air Canada has invested millions of dollars into elevating its premium cabin experience, ranging from its amazing airport lounges to its onboard offerings. As such, it’s built up a positive reputation among travelers for providing a high-quality experience for passengers — especially when flying in a premium cabin.

In this guide, we’re going to show you all the best strategies for booking a ticket in Air Canada’s business with points and miles so it’ll cost just a fraction of what the experience typically would.

We’ll focus most of our attention on the premium U.S. to Canada routes offering lie-flat seats, though we will also outline how to book Air Canada business class on long-haul routes departing from Canada.

Let’s get started!

Air Canada business class seat

Air Canada’s long-haul and premium transcontinental business class experience is collectively referred to as Signature Class .

If you’re flying out of a Canadian airport, you’ll have access to a series of Maple Leaf Lounges that are operated by Air Canada. And if you’ve booked an eligible award ticket, you may be able to access Air Canada’s ultra-exclusive Signature Suite Lounges . And, of course, you’ll receive other benefits like priority boarding and an enhanced baggage allowance with your ticket.

Once you step onto the plane, you’ll find a sleek business class cabin lined with posh reverse-herringbone seats in a 1-2-1 configuration. Every seat reclines to the fully flat position, has direct aisle access, and boasts plenty of storage.

You’ll enjoy high-quality bedding (including mattress pads) , as well as amenity kits, extensive dining menus, great inflight entertainment, and great service.

If you’re traveling solo, we’d highly recommend a window seat for maximum privacy and views . Traveling duos should opt for a pair of seats in the middle.

How To Fly Air Canada Business Class Using Points

Air Canada’s premium business class routes are fairly difficult to book using points. If you’re planning to travel anywhere from a week to 3 months before departure, your chances of getting a business class award seat are slim .

That said, Air Canada makes a healthy amount of international business class award seats available very far in advance, particularly from Montréal (YUL) .

You may also encounter last-minute availability (1 to 2 days before departure) from time to time, especially on premium U.S. to Canada routes.

Air Canada does not levy fuel surcharges for U.S. to Canada flights, and flights to Asia have a minimal amount of fuel surcharges. On the other hand, South American and European flights come with around $350 and $450 in fuel surcharges, respectively.

Here are most of Air Canada’s routes to and from the U.S. that offer lie-flat business class seats:

  • Honolulu (HNL) – Toronto (YYZ)
  • Honolulu (HNL) – Vancouver (YVR)
  • Kahului (OGG) – Toronto (YYZ)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Toronto (YYZ)
  • Newark (EWR) – Vancouver (YVR)
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Toronto (YYZ)

In addition, 2 transcontinental routes within Canada regularly offer lie-flat business class seats:

  • Vancouver (YVR) – Montréal (YUL)
  • Vancouver (YVR) – Toronto (YYZ)

Air Canada offers nonstop long-haul flights from Calgary (YYC) to the following destinations:

  • Frankfurt (FRA)
  • London (LHR)

Air Canada offers nonstop long-haul flights from Montréal (YUL) to the following destinations:

  • Athens (ATH)
  • Cairo (CAI)
  • Bogotá (BOG)
  • Brussels (BRU)
  • Geneva (GVA)
  • New Delhi (DEL)
  • Paris (CDG)
  • São Paulo (GRU)
  • Tel Aviv (TLV)
  • Tokyo (NRT)

Air Canada offers nonstop long-haul flights from Toronto (YYZ) to the following destinations:

  • Amsterdam (AMS)
  • Dubai (DXB)
  • Dublin (DUB)
  • Hong Kong (HKG)
  • Munich (MUC)
  • Santiago (SCL)
  • Seoul (ICN)
  • Tokyo (HND)
  • Vienna (VIE)
  • Zurich (ZRH)

Air Canada offers nonstop long-haul flights from Vancouver (YVR) to the following destinations:

  • Auckland (AKL)
  • Beijing (PEK)

Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles , without a doubt, offers the most attractive one-way award prices for flights between the U.S. and Canada. It’s a Star Alliance frequent flyer program , meaning you can book Air Canada flights using Turkish Airlines miles.

And while Turkish Airlines miles are slightly harder to earn without Amex and Chase as transfer partners, getting your hands on an award ticket is still doable.

You can book a one-way flight for great prices, and you won’t have to worry about fuel surcharges because even though any fuel surcharges are passed on to the traveler, Air Canada doesn’t levy fuel surcharges on U.S. to Canada flights to begin with.

Here’s the award chart for one-way Air Canada flights between the U.S. and Canada:

Being able to book a one-way business class ticket that retails for more than $1,000 in each direction with just 15,000 miles offers incredible value — around 8 cents per point,  which is unheard of for regional flights.

Turkish Airlines’ online search engine is very clunky. Unless you’re booking a Turkish Airlines flight, we recommend calling to book an award ticket . You can also book via email, but this can be excruciatingly frustrating to do.

Follow these steps to book your Air Canada business class ticket:

  • Go to United’s website and find Saver availability for an Air Canada business class flight.
  • Call Turkish Airlines at 800-874-8875 and select option 1.
  • Enter your Miles&Smiles number. Select the prompt to book a new reservation.
  • Provide the customer service agent your flight information, and confirm the ticket using your Turkish Airlines miles and a credit card for taxes and fees.

Bottom Line: With Turkish Airlines, it’s possible to book a premium transcontinental business class flight for fewer miles than it would cost other travelers to book a short-haul coach flight!

Air Canada’s loyalty program, Aeroplan , has a relatively complicated system for pricing award flights . It uses a hybrid dynamic award pricing system for its own flights, while it uses a hybrid distance-based award pricing system for partner flights.

That’s why in the following table, you’ll see that each distance bracket comes with a range of possible prices for one-way flights:

Something to be aware of while you’re searching for award availability: a Saver award that you find on a partner website like United may not be priced at the lowest possible price in a particular distance bracket.

For example, most Saver awards in business class on Air Canada’s route between Los Angeles (LAX) and Toronto (YYZ) cost 28,000 Aeroplan points, which is not quite the bottom of the 25,000-to-60,000-point range in Aeroplan’s award chart. For reference, the flight distance between Los Angeles and Toronto is approximately 2,175 miles.

Another unique benefit of using Air Canada Aeroplan is that you’ll have much greater access to award availability , meaning you won’t have to search for Saver availability — though you may end up redeeming more points for these flights.

Your total out-of-pocket bill will be around ~$32 in taxes and fees one-way.

Hot Tip: If you’re booking a Business Class Flexible Reward ticket using Aeroplan points, you have the incredible privilege of accessing the Air Canada Signature Suite Lounge . That’s right, there  is a way to get into the Signature Suite with points.

Follow these instructions to book your ticket using Aeroplan points:

  • Make your way to Air Canada’s homepage .
  • In the top-right corner, click Sign in by hovering over the button that says Sign in .
  • Log in using your Aeroplan number and password.
  • On the homepage’s search box, remember to toggle the slider that says  Points .
  • Select Round-trip  or  One-way  for the trip, fill in the search box, and click Find .
  • Find a suitable flight, redeem your Aeroplan points, and use a credit card to book your Air Canada flight.

Earning Air Canada Aeroplan Points

Aeroplan is transfer partners with Amex Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards, Capital One Miles,  Chase Ultimate Rewards , and Marriott Bonvoy.

Amex, Bilt, Capital One, and Chase all transfer instantly at a 1:1 ratio, while Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio within 5 business days. You’ll also get a bonus of 5,000 Aeroplan points for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred.

ANA Mileage Club offers attractive business class pricing, though using this program isn’t quite as attractive for U.S. to Canada flights as it usually is for flights to Africa, Asia, and Europe.

ANA requires round-trip or open-jaw award bookings; no one-way bookings are permitted .

Here’s how much it costs to book a round-trip Air Canada business class ticket between the U.S. and Canada:

Here are the instructions you should be following to book Air Canada business class flights using ANA miles:

  • Instead of using ANA’s website to search for award availability, do so on United’s search engine . Look for  Saver award tickets .
  • Note down all the flight information.
  • Visit ANA’s website , click ANA Mileage Club in the top-right corner, and log into your ANA Mileage Club account.
  • You’ll be taken to a search page. Enter all of the same information from step 2.
  • Perform your search and reconfirm availability.
  • Book the flights using ANA miles and a credit card for taxes and fees.

This is what a successful award search looks like with ANA:

Business Owner?  Check out our article on the best  Amex business cards  that earn Membership Rewards.

Bottom Line: One of the underrated benefits of ANA Mileage Club is the fact that it allows award cancellations for just 3,000 miles per ticket. This is in stark contrast with other frequent flyer programs that may charge up to $200 per ticket!

Avianca LifeMiles offers excellent redemptions rates. In fact, on paper, the rates are better than ANA’s.

LifeMiles are generally easier to earn than ANA miles, and you can often even purchase LifeMiles at a phenomenal rate if you don’t have enough points.

But in practice, using LifeMiles for Air Canada business class tickets is incredibly frustrating — award availability often doesn’t match what’s viewable on United’s website. That, coupled with the steep change fee of $150 per ticket and cancellation fee of $200 per ticket, makes us reconsider whether it’s really the best option to book Air Canada business class.

Here’s how much a one-way Air Canada business class ticket between the U.S. and Canada would cost with LifeMiles:

Here are the steps to book your Air Canada business class flight using LifeMiles. Remember, just because you see availability on a partner’s website like United or Aeroplan doesn’t mean you’ll see the same availability on LifeMiles.

  • Do not transfer points to LifeMiles until you’ve confirmed award availability.
  • First, start by searching for award availability on United.com . Write down any matching flight details.
  • Visit LifeMiles’ homepage .
  • Change the site language to English by clicking the circular flag button in the top-right corner and clicking English .
  • In the top-right corner, sign in using your LifeMiles Number  and  Password .
  • On the new homepage’s top banner, click Fly .
  • Near the top-left of the page, toggle the drop-down menu that says Smart Search and change it to Air Canada .
  • Fill out the search box, choose one-way or round-trip, and click Find Flights .
  • Select the travel dates.
  • Attempt to verify that the flights you see are the same flights from the United.com search.
  • After verifying all the flight information matches what you found on United, transfer your points to LifeMiles and book the reservation.

Earning Avianca LifeMiles

The good news is that LifeMiles are easy to earn, thanks to transfer partnerships with American Express,  Brex Rewards , Capital One, Citi, and Marriott Bonvoy.

Amex, Brex, Capital One, and Citi all transfer at a 1:1 ratio almost instantly. Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio in approximately 1 business day with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred .

Amex, Citi, and Brex also often offer transfer bonuses, which could reduce your award flight cost by an additional 20% to 30%!

Bottom Line: Avianca LifeMiles is the best option for Capital One enthusiasts, thanks to the enhanced 1:1 transfer ratio. Just be mindful that LifeMiles doesn’t always have access to the same availability that other partners like United do. Also, remember that LifeMiles has a harsh change fee of $150 and a brutal cancellation fee of $200 per ticket!

The last method we’ll talk about is United MileagePlus , a very popular program in the U.S. MileagePlus will waste very little of your time, thanks to a simplistic booking process and powerful search engine .

There are no fuel surcharges you’ll be liable for, and redemption prices are reasonable.

Here are the steps you can take to reserve your Air Canada flights using United miles:

  • Go to United’s website .
  • Check off the box that says Book with Miles in the homepage’s search box.
  • Fill in the flight information and click  Find flights .
  • Scroll through each date in the calendar and confirm your ticket when you find a suitable option.

There are plenty of other ways to book Air Canada business class flights, including  EVA Air Infinity MileageLands , Asiana Club , and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer .

Some of these frequent flyer programs have hard-to-earn miles, while others have unattractive award rates. And a few of them have unintuitive booking processes that require phone calls.

Remember, we focused on flights between the U.S. and Canada. For flights between Canada and the rest of the world, there are undoubtedly going to be different programs that have competitive redemption prices!

In total, we covered options for booking Air Canada business class tickets between the U.S. and Canada. Here are our findings (note that the Air Canada prices refer to the Saver-level awards):

As you can tell, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles wins by a long shot . Offering one-way business class tickets for a jaw-dropping 15,000 miles, it’s easy to see why this is our undisputed winner. Turkish Airlines miles can be transferred from Bilt, Capital One, or Citi at a 1:1 ratio and Marriott Bonvoy at a 3:1 ratio.

After that, we’re big fans of Air Canada Aeroplan for its enhanced award availability , as well as offering the only way to get Signature Suite lounge access on an award ticket when booking a Business Class Flexible Reward ticket. Aeroplan is transfer partners with Amex, Capital One, and Chase at a 1:1 ratio and Marriott Bonvoy at a 3:1 ratio.

ANA is great because if you find round-trip award availability, you can book with peace of mind, knowing that the cancellation fee is just 3,000 miles per ticket . Miles can be transferred from Amex 1:1 or Marriott Bonvoy 3:1.

LifeMiles is the best deal for those amassing Capital One miles due to the 1:1 transfer ratio, but be wary of the inconsistent award availability and the severe change/cancellation fees! Other partners include Amex, Brex, and Citi at a 1:1 ratio and Marriott Bonvoy at a 3:1 ratio.

United MileagePlus is a solid choice because its online interface is second-to-none ; you can take care of your award booking completely online with ease. Transfers can be made 1:1 from Bilt Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards, or 3:1.1 from Marriott Bonvoy.

Here are some awesome award redemptions you can make with Air Canada:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Toronto (YYZ) round-trip in Air Canada business class for 30,000 Turkish Airlines miles
  • Newark (EWR) – Vancouver (YVR) one-way in Air Canada business class for 25,000 LifeMiles
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Toronto (YYZ) round-trip in Air Canada business class for 58,500 Aeroplan points (includes a Flexible Reward ticket booked on the returning flight with Signature Suite access)
  • Vancouver (YVR) – Montréal (YUL) one-way in Air Canada business class for 27,500 United miles
  • Vancouver (YVR) – Toronto (YYZ) round-trip in Air Canada business class for 55,000 ANA miles

There are numerous methods for booking Air Canada business class. Since Air Canada is a Star Alliance airline, you can redeem points from any transferable currency to book business class flights!

Here is the list of transferable currencies and which of the top 5 frequent flyer programs they can transfer to:

  • American Express Membership Rewards points transfer at a 1:1 ratio to Air Canada Aeroplan almost instantly, ANA Mileage Club within 3 business days, and Avianca LifeMiles almost instantly.
  • Bilt Rewards points transfer at a 1:1 ratio almost instantly to Air Canada Aeroplan, Turkish Miles &Smiles, and United.
  • Brex Rewards points transfer at a 1:1 ratio almost instantly to Avianca LifeMiles.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer at a 1:1 ratio instantly to Air Canada Aeroplan and United MileagePlus.
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards Points transfer at a 1:1 ratio to Avianca LifeMiles almost instantly and to Turkish Airlines in 1 to 2 business days.
  • Capital One miles transfer at a 1:1 ratio to Air Canada Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio almost instantly, to Avianca LifeMiles almost instantly, and to Turkish Airlines at a 1:1 ratio in around 1 business day.
  • Marriott Bonvoy points transfer at a 3:1 ratio to Air Canada Aeroplan within 5 business days, ANA Mileage Club within 4 business days, Avianca LifeMiles within 1 business day, and Turkish Miles&Smiles. They also transfer to United at a slightly better 3:1.1 ratio within 3 business days.

You should also note that transfer bonuses to LifeMiles of 15% to 30% are offered often, whereas Aeroplan occasionally has transfer bonuses of 15% to 25% and Turkish Airlines has transfer bonuses very rarely. Typically, the transfer bonuses are from Amex, Citi, and Brex (on occasion). A Capital One transfer bonus is very rare, and ANA and United have never had transfer bonuses.

This is highly dependent on the route you’re flying. For example, if you’re booking an international route from Montréal, it shouldn’t be difficult to find availability far in advance, and you’ll need to start searching at least 2 months in advance of departure if you want to book premium transcontinental flights from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Toronto.

But, you may also find extremely last-minute availability (same-day or a day before departure). The general rule of thumb is to search far in advance for Air Canada business class flights.

We recommend using United to search for award space. If you plan on adhering to a strict flight schedule and are fine with redeeming double or triple the points, give the Air Canada website a shot.

What Makes Air Canada a Great Business Class Redemption

Air Canada is an airline that never blows anyone away, but it provides a good enough impression to make people happy to fly on it again. According to our rankings, it’s also one of the best international business class airlines in the world .

Let’s take a look at the major highlights:

Air Canada Business Class Lie Flat Seat

Air Canada’s hard product is industry-leading. Whether you’re flying on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or the 777, you’ll find comfortable lie-flat business class seats in a reverse-herringbone layout.

Each of these seats is wide, spacious, comfortable, technologically advanced, and provides plenty of privacy.

Beyond the hard product, everything else about the Air Canada business class experience receives high marks.

Whether you’re looking at the expansive wine list, the attention to detail in its catering, the friendly Canadian service, or the comfortable bedding, Air Canada business class is an all-around high-quality product.

Even on regional flights, you might find a mattress pad, complete with a full set of bedding and a wellness amenity kit.

Air Canada Signature Suite Toronto

Air Canada’s Signature Suite has made a big splash. These ultra-exclusive spaces are the best lounges in North America , competing on level footing with international first class lounges!

Amenities include plenty of space to relax, à la carte dining service with top-tier food offerings, top-shelf alcohol, and much more.

And if you redeem Air Canada Aeroplan points for a Business Class Flexible Reward ticket, you’re entitled to Signature Suite lounge access !

Check out the price difference between a Saver Reward and a Flexible Reward ticket:

Air Canada business class Aeroplan fare types

If anything, you can think of the difference in rates as your way to purchase access to the exclusive airport hangout.

Air Canada receives high marks all around. Booking a business class ticket, particularly on premium U.S. to Canada routes is especially challenging due to a drought of award availability.

But if you’re willing to book your trip to Canada a bit further in advance than everybody else, you’ll be rewarded with superb redemption value.

With some luck and plenty of advanced planning, you’ll find yourself sitting comfortably in an Air Canada business class seat in no time!

How to Choose the Right Air Canada Fare

Air Canada offers a number of fare options for travellers. Some fares are cheaper, but don’t include many benefits, while others are more expensive, but come with more flexibility and perks.

In This Post

Air canada’s fares, economy (basic), economy (standard), economy (flex), economy (comfort), economy (latitude), premium economy (lowest & flexible), business class (lowest & flexible).

When shopping for flights on Air Canada’s website, you’ll notice that there are a number of different options at your disposal for tickets. You’ll pay a different price for a flight depending on which fare you choose.

For example, let’s say that you’re looking to fly from Halifax to Vancouver, and you pull up a search result. Initially, you see two different prices for a direct flight: one for economy, and one for business class.

When you click on the economy fare, you’ll notice a number of different options, with the lowest priced at $321 (CAD) and then incrementally higher prices with each different fare.

Under the “Features” column, you’ll see a list of various factors that you’ll want to consider when shopping for a fare. This includes aspects such as refundability, included baggage, accumulation of Aeroplan points, and earning Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) towards Aeroplan Elite Status .

If you’re not a frequent flyer, shopping for the right fare isn’t necessarily a straightforward process. Indeed, you’ll want to consider any or all of the following when looking for a fare:

  • Credit card benefits
  • Aeroplan Elite Status benefits
  • Aeroplan Elite Status qualification
  • Number of eUpgrades required
  • Amount of eUpgrade add-on fee (if any)
  • eUpgrade waitlist ranking considerations
  • Fare flexibility

As we’ll show below, the cheapest fare isn’t always necessarily the best deal, but there’s also no point in paying more than you absolutely have to.

For the purposes of this article, we won’t be focusing on the different fare classes  within  each fare. Rather, we’ll describe each different fare type, and then weigh the pros and cons of choosing to book each one.

Economy (Basic) fares are the least expensive, but most restrictive, fares that Air Canada offers. You can find Economy (Basic) fares on domestic, transborder, and international routes, as well as to Sun destinations.

As the name might suggest, there aren’t any bells and whistles with Economy (Basic) fares – you get a seat on a plane, and that’s about it.

Economy (Basic) fares are non-refundable, and if you choose to cancel, you can’t retain the value for a future travel credit. Similarly, you can’t make changes to your booking (even for a fee), and you aren’t eligible for same-day standby .

air canada book travel

On domestic routes, you’ll only earn 10% Aeroplan points, and on all other routes, you’ll earn 25% Aeroplan points. This means that if your flight is 1,000 miles, you’d only earn 100 Aeroplan points on a domestic flight, or 250 Aeroplan points on all other flights.

With Economy (Basic) fares, you won’t earn any Status Qualifying Miles (SQM), Status Qualifying Segments (SQS), or Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD) towards Aeroplan Elite Status .

eUpgrades cannot be applied to Economy (Basic) fares, so if you’re looking to travel in a higher class of service by using eUpgrade credits, you’ll want to pay for a higher fare.

With Economy (Basic) fares, you’ll have to pay for checked luggage and seat selection, and you won’t enjoy any included ground perks, such as priority check-in or Maple Leaf Lounge access, unless you already enjoy those through a credit card or with your status.

Who should book Economy (Basic) fares?

Despite being the most restrictive fare, Economy (Basic) fares exist for a reason.

If you’re a price-sensitive traveller who just wants a seat on a plane, and you don’t care much about earning Aeroplan points or Aeroplan Elite Status, then this fare is right for you. This goes for someone who travels infrequently and is just looking for a deal, as well as anyone who doesn’t mind travelling in economy on short-, medium-, and long-haul routes.

At the same time, if you already enjoy other perks that are included with your status or credit card, such as lounge access, seat selection, priority boarding, and free checked luggage, then Economy (Basic) fares could be right for you, too. Why pay more for a flight if you already enjoy the perks that come with higher fares?

For example, if you have a credit card such as the TD Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card , you and up to eight passengers on the same booking get one free checked bag on Air Canada flights.

If you’re a family of four looking for the cheapest flights, then you could book an Economy (Basic) fare and save on checked baggage fees with an eligible co-branded credit card. At a minimum of $30 (CAD) per checked bag without a credit card, the savings can certainly add up quickly.

On the other hand, if you’re in pursuit of Aeroplan Elite Status , then it’s probably advisable to look for a different fare with a higher accumulation rate. Since you won’t accumulate any SQM, SQS, or SQD, Economy (Basic) fares likely aren’t for you if you hope to qualify for or maintain Aeroplan Elite Status.

Likewise, if you want some peace of mind if your plans change, then you should consider a higher fare that allows you to change or cancel your booking, usually for a fee. For what it’s worth, Air Canada’s Cancel for Any Reason feature isn’t available on Economy (Basic) fares.

The next level up from Economy (Basic) is Economy (Standard). Economy (Standard) fares are available to all destinations, including domestic, transborder, international, and Sun.

Furthermore, Economy (Standard) fares are available on Aeroplan redemptions.

You’ll start to notice a few more inclusions on Economy (Standard) fares, but they’re still more restricted compared to higher fares.

Economy (Standard) fares aren’t refundable, but you can make changes for a fee that varies depending on your destination. On select domestic and transborder routes, Economy (Standard) fares are eligible for same-day standby .

On domestic routes, you’ll earn 25% Aeroplan points, while on all other routes, you’ll earn 50% Aeroplan points. For example, if your flight is 1,000 miles long, you’d earn 250 Aeroplan points if it’s a domestic flight, and 500 Aeroplan points if it’s to any other destination.

Economy (Standard) fares earn 50% SQM on all routes, which means that you’d earn 500 SQM on a flight that’s 1,000 miles long. Economy (Standard) fares are eligible for full SQS and SQD accumulation, and you can apply eUpgrades to your booking, albeit typically with an add-on fee.

Your travel experience on Economy (Standard) fares largely mirrors that of Economy (Basic) fares, with the sole exception of paying slightly less for advance seat selection.

Who should book Economy (Standard) fares?

The main reasons to opt for an Economy (Standard) fare over an Economy (Basic) fare are:

  • Accumulating SQM and slightly more Aeroplan points
  • Being fully eligible for SQS and SQD accumulation on all routes
  • Applying eUpgrades to your booking (typically with an add-on fee)
  • Having the ability to change your booking (for a fee)

For travellers without status, Economy (Standard) fares offer a bit more flexibility than Economy (Basic) fares, but not nearly as much as any of the higher fares. If you’re happy to always fly in economy, then Economy (Standard) fares are worth considering in many cases.

Economy (Standard) fares can be a good idea for someone who tends to qualify for Aeroplan Elite Status through SQS and not SQM. Since you earn 100% of the segments flown, but only up to 50% of the miles flown, you could wind up saving money over the course of the year by booking a lower fare.

Of course, you should also take into consideration the Aeroplan points you’d earn with a higher fare, which could become meaningful if you’re a very frequent flyer.

While you can apply eUpgrades to Economy (Standard) bookings, they almost always come with an add-on fee. If you plan on using them to upgrade to a higher class of service, you’ll want to look at the difference between the total cost of the Economy (Standard) fare plus the add-on fee and a higher fare, which would either come with a lesser add-on fee or none at all.

If you tend to make changes to bookings, then you should likely consider a higher fare to avoid paying change fees in addition to the fare difference (if any).

Should you have free checked baggage, Maple Leaf Lounge access, priority airport services, free seat selection, or any other perks through status or credit card benefits, then Economy (Standard) fares are a decent option, especially if you’re happy with flying in economy.

When it comes to Aeroplan redemptions, Economy (Standard) fares have the lowest cost in points. If you’re travelling in economy and have any tier of Aeroplan Elite Status, then booking Economy (Standard) is almost always the best bet, as long as you won’t be applying eUpgrades to your booking.

The next fare brand up from Economy (Standard) is Economy (Flex). Economy (Flex) fares are available across all of Air Canada’s markets, including on Aeroplan redemptions.

Economy (Flex) fares are where we begin to see more meaningful benefits that come with the higher price.

Economy (Flex) fares aren’t refundable, but can be changed. Aside from bookings to international destinations, with which you’ll be charged a change fee, you’ll just need to pay the difference in fare (if any) with Economy (Flex) fares.

On Aeroplan bookings, Economy (Flex) fares can be changed for free (a fare difference in points may apply), but are subject to cancellation fees.

Same-day airport standby is available on select routes within Canada and to the United States, and same-day airport changes are available for a fee on select routes.

You’ll earn 100% SQM and 100% Aeroplan points for the distance flown on Economy (Flex) fares, as well as full SQS and SQD. This means that on a flight that measures 1,000 miles, you’d earn 1,000 SQM towards status, 1,000 Aeroplan points, plus full SQS and SQD on your booking.

Economy (Flex) fares include one free bag, advance seat selection, and Maple Leaf Lounge access for $79 (CAD).

Who should book Economy (Flex) fares?

The main reasons to pay more for an Economy (Flex) fare over an Economy (Standard) fare are:

  • Saving on change fees
  • Accumulating 100% SQM and 100% Aeroplan points
  • Having fewer eUpgrades required
  • Having a lower add-on fee for eUpgrades (if any)

Economy (Flex) fares are useful for making the most of paid fares through SQM and Aeroplan accumulation, as well as for saving on change fees in most markets.

If there’s a chance that you’ll need to change your flights, then Economy (Flex) fares are certainly worth considering for peace of mind. This also holds true for Aeroplan redemptions, as you’d only need to pay the difference in points, if any.

Plus, if you tend to qualify for Aeroplan Elite Status through SQM, then you’ll generally want to book Economy (Flex) cash fares at a minimum, since you’ll earn 100% SQM on the miles flown.

On flights within North America and to Sun destinations, all Economy (Flex) fares come without an add-on fee for eUpgrade usage. For international flights, you’ll have to pay an add-on fee, except for if you’re a Super Elite , book a “B” or “M” fare, or only upgrade to premium economy .

It’s important to note that many of the fare inclusions for Economy (Flex) also come as co-branded credit card benefits and with Aeroplan Elite Status. If you already enjoy free checked baggage or seat selection, and if you don’t plan on using eUpgrades, then the buy-up to Economy (Flex) may not always be worth the extra price.

This is particularly the case with Aeroplan redemptions, with which it’s not always worth the extra points to move from Economy (Standard) to Economy (Flex). If you plan on using eUpgrades, just be sure to weigh the cost of the add-on fee against the number of extra points required to see if it’s worthwhile.

Economy (Comfort) fares are the next step up from Economy (Flex). You can find Economy (Comfort) fares available on domestic, transborder, and routes to Sun destinations, but not on international routes or any Aeroplan booking.

The primary difference between an Economy (Comfort) and an Economy (Flex) fare is that the Economy (Comfort) fares are fully refundable at no cost. If you don’t want to risk losing cash if your plans change and you no longer need to fly, then it’s worth considering Economy (Comfort) over Economy (Flex).

You’ll also benefit from greater flexibility, in that you can make changes in advance, as well as request a same-day airport change or same-day airport standby at no additional cost. For same-day airport changes, you won’t incur any additional fees with Economy (Comfort) fares, as long as the flight is operated by Air Canada.

You’ll earn 115% Aeroplan points and SQM on Economy (Comfort) fares, in addition to the usual SQS and SQD accumulation.

The price of Maple Leaf Lounge access drops to $59 (CAD) per visit on Economy (Comfort) fares, and you’ll receive free Preferred Seat selection on all bookings.

Otherwise, the inclusions largely mirror those of Economy (Flex) fares.

Who should book Economy (Comfort) fares?

The main reasons to book an Economy (Comfort) fare over an Economy (Flex) fare are:

  • Being able to refund your flight at no cost
  • Using fewer eUpgrades on bookings
  • Higher eUpgrade waitlist ranking
  • Slightly higher SQM and Aeroplan accumulation

If you’re concerned that you might need to cancel your trip, it’s worth considering Economy (Comfort) fares, since they’re fully refundable at no extra cost. You’ll have to shoulder a higher fare to begin with, but that’s the price to pay for the added flexibility.

You’ll also be able to ration your eUpgrades with Economy (Comfort) fares, since you’ll typically expend fewer than with Economy (Flex) and Economy (Standard) fares. Should you be waitlisted for an eUpgrade, you’ll rank higher than anyone booked on a lower economy fare, which could mean the difference between a lie-flat seat and being stuck in the back.

air canada book travel

The add-on fees for most Economy (Comfort) fares cap out at $200 (CAD), which is modest when compared to the $500–750+ (CAD) fees with the lower fares.

The extra 15% SQM and Aeroplan-point accumulation could also be meaningful, especially if there are any promotions that you can stack with them. If you’re just shy of an SQM threshold to get to the next status level, that extra 15% may bring you closer to the finish line.

The least restrictive, and therefore most expensive, of Air Canada’s economy fares is Economy (Latitude). Economy (Latitude) fares are available to all Air Canada markets, including with Aeroplan bookings.

Economy (Latitude) fares feature many of the same benefits of Economy (Comfort) fares, just taken to the next level.

Economy (Latitude) fares are fully refundable and may be changed in advance without a fee. You can use the same-day airport change and same-day standby benefits, too.

You’ll earn 125% SQM and Aeroplan points, as well as the usual SQS and SQD accumulation.

With Economy (Latitude) fares, you’ll enjoy priority check-in and baggage handling (even if you don’t have status), $49 (CAD) access to Maple Leaf Lounges , two free checked bags, no fee for handling sports equipment, and a free Air Canada Bistro meal on domestic, transborder, and Sun routes.

Who should book Economy (Latitude) fares?

The main reasons to book Economy (Latitude) over Economy (Comfort) are:

  • Fully refundable fares for international flights
  • Using the fewest number of eUpgrades on bookings
  • No add-on fees for eUpgrades
  • Not being subject to the eUpgrade clearance window

It’s worth noting that Economy (Latitude) fares can be significantly more expensive than all other economy fares, and in some cases, the cost even rivals business class fares.

Aside from being fully refundable, the main reason to buy an Economy (Latitude) fare has to do with eUpgrade usage. You’ll expend the fewest eUpgrades on bookings, and you won’t encounter an add-on fee on any routes, but the most important reason is what we’ve coined as the “ Latitude Attitude “.

air canada book travel

All other economy fares are subject to an eUpgrade clearance window, which means that you can only instantly confirm a space-available eUpgrade within a certain timeframe prior to departure.

On the other hand, Economy (Latitude) fares aren’t subject to a clearance window at all, which means that as long as you tick all of the boxes (by checking for eUpgrade availability and having eUpgrades available in your account valid for the date of travel), you can instantly confirm a seat in business class immediately after booking, having paid for economy.

While this remains one of the most valuable ways to redeem Aeroplan points for Air Canada business class , it can also come in handy for cash bookings when you’d otherwise pay for a business class seat.

For example, consider the cost of a flight from Toronto to London. In this instance, an Economy (Latitude) fare costs $1,868 (CAD) and a Business Class (Lowest) fare costs $2,594 (CAD).

If you have the 11 eUpgrades valid for the date of travel, and if you’ve confirmed that there is eUpgrade space available on the flight, then you’ve just saved yourself over $700 (CAD) for the same seat on the same flight.

There are many other examples in which a similar approach could work, and if you’re going to pay for business class anyway, then it’s worth looking at Economy (Latitude) fares as well.

Just keep in mind that there’s a small chance that you’ll lose your eUpgrade . If you want to be guaranteed a seat in business class, book business class to begin with.

Let’s quickly look at Premium Economy (Lowest & Flexible) fares. While there are plenty of reasons why premium economy is a great deal , it’s worthwhile adding it to the discussion of fare shopping.

air canada book travel

The most obvious reason to book in premium economy is that you’ll enjoy an overall better experience to begin with. You’ll get a seat with much more room than economy, a better meal, complimentary drinks, and priority ground services.

Premium Economy (Lowest) fares can, in some cases, be less expensive than Economy (Flex) fares, which is something to always consider when you’re shopping for flights with cash and with Aeroplan points.

You’ll be at the top of the eUpgrade waitlist with a premium economy fare, which means that you’ll be ahead of everyone else who books an economy fare to begin with.

In this sense, you have the best chances of securing an eUpgrade to Air Canada business class if you’ve booked in premium economy; however, you should also be ready to fly in premium economy if the upgrade doesn’t clear.

In many ways, Premium Economy (Lowest) and Economy (Flex) fares are similar, but you’ll earn 125% SQM and Aeroplan points with Premium Economy fares, and you’ll also enjoy a few more inclusions. eUpgrade add-on fees for Premium Economy (Lowest) fares are much lower than those of economy fares, too.

Premium Economy (Flexible) fares are similar to Economy (Latitude) fares in that they’re refundable and aren’t subject to an eUpgrade clearance window. If, for some reason, it costs less in cash or points to book Premium Economy (Flexible) over Economy (Latitude), then be sure to choose your fare accordingly.

Let’s end with a quick word about Business Class (Lowest & Flexible fares). These are almost certainly the most expensive of all of Air Canada’s fares, and come with supercharged 150% SQM and Aeroplan earning rate.

Of course, if you want a 100% chance of flying in business class, then you need to book in business class to begin with.

The primary difference between the two fares is that the Business Class (Flexible) fare is fully refundable at no cost.

Both fares offer two free checked bags, priority ground services, access to the London Heathrow Arrivals Lounge , and Air Canada’s best in-flight experience.

The only other consideration to note is that not all business class cabins are created equally.

For example, consider if it’s worth paying for a North American-style business class seat, which is largely the same as a premium economy seat, or if there are cheaper ways to score a seat in Air Canada business class .

With some finesse, you should be able to find yourself in a lie-flat pod without having paid the premium for it, assuming you have Aeroplan Elite Status.

Air Canada offers a range of fares to customers across all of its markets. Lower fares come with fewer inclusions, while higher fares offer greater flexibility and more perks.

When shopping around for flights, it’s important to consider all options, including benefits that you could otherwise enjoy through an Aeroplan co-branded credit card or with your Aeroplan Elite Status . You’ll also want to consider if the fare you’re looking at is really the best deal, given your goals, travel patterns, and desired comforts.

If in doubt, you can always get in touch with a qualified travel agent, or reach out to a member of the Prince of Travel team on a Points Consulting call to create a plan for status accumulation.

I booked a Flex fare with AC but some of the segments were on a United plane. The AC segment subsequently got cancelled and I was put on a United plane.

The portion that got cancelled I received no SQD and I received less than 100% of the mileage flown for SQM

Is this possible?

T.J. Based on your above example, standard fare is $350, no refund and change for a fee. How about to cancel the ticket? Would Air Canada give me some credit back instead of losing the total $350? Happy 2024!

Air Canada's Aeroplan program: The ultimate guide to earning and redeeming points

Andrew Kunesh

Editors note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information

Air Canada's Aeroplan program flies under the radar, but it is one of the most valuable and rewarding Star Alliance airline programs.

Even if you never plan to visit Canada, this is a program you should know about thanks to the ease of earning and redeeming Aeroplan points , especially on partner airlines like United Airlines .

Here is everything you need to know about Air Canada Aeroplan.

Air Canada Aeroplan overview

The Aeroplan program is the loyalty program offered by Canada's largest airline, Air Canada . It allows travelers to earn and redeem points for various travel-related rewards.

In 2020, Air Canada revamped its loyalty program to make it more flexible and member-friendly. It eliminated fuel surcharges on award flights and introduced dynamic ticket pricing, allowing for more availability but with varying mileage costs.

Perhaps most importantly, Aeroplan still uses published award charts for partner flights — a rarity in a loyalty world largely driven by dynamic pricing.

Air Canada Aeroplan partners

air canada book travel

Air Canada is a Star Alliance member, so you can earn and redeem Aeroplan points with any participating carrier. In fact, more than two dozen airlines around the world are full members, giving you massive geographical coverage.

Some of the largest Star Alliance hubs include Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) , Frankfurt Airport (FRA) , Istanbul Airport (IST) and Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND) .

The following airlines are part of Star Alliance:

  • Aegean Airlines
  • Air New Zealand
  • All Nippon Airways
  • Asiana Airlines
  • Austrian Airlines
  • Brussels Airlines
  • Copa Airlines
  • Croatia Airlines
  • Ethiopian Airlines
  • EVA Airways
  • LOT Polish Airlines
  • Scandinavian Airlines
  • Shenzhen Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • South African Airways
  • TAP Air Portugal
  • Thai Airways
  • Turkish Airlines
  • United Airlines

However, Aeroplan also has relationships with many carriers outside of Star Alliance. In fact, Air Canada has leaned heavily into these partnerships in recent years, even winning a TPG Award for this investment in 2021.

The following airlines are non-alliance Aeroplan partners:

  • Air Creebec
  • Air Dolomiti (Star Alliance affiliate)
  • Air Mauritius
  • Azul Brazilian Airlines
  • Bamboo Airways
  • Canadian North
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Central Mountain Air
  • Discover Airlines (Star Alliance affiliate)
  • Etihad Airways
  • Eurowings (Star Alliance affiliate)
  • Gol Airlines
  • Juneyao Air (Star Alliance connecting partner)
  • Olympic Airlines
  • PAL Airlines
  • SriLankan Airlines

Air Canada Aeroplan elite status

air canada book travel

Air Canada Aeroplan rewards frequent Air Canada and Star Alliance flyers with valuable perks like seat upgrades, free checked bags and other benefits across five different status tiers.

To qualify, you'll need to earn a set number of status-qualifying miles or status-qualifying segments in addition to accruing a minimum amount of status-qualifying dollars. SQMs are calculated based on your flight distance, SQSs are based on how many flights you credit to Aeroplan and SQDs are based on how much you spend on tickets. Note that SQDs are based on Canadian dollars.

Here's a look at the requirements for each status tier:

  • Aeroplan 25K : 25,000 SQMs or 25 SQSs, plus 3,000 SQDs
  • Aeroplan 35K : 35,000 SQMs or 35 SQSs, plus 4,000 SQDs
  • Aeroplan 50K : 50,000 SQMs or 50 SQSs, plus 6,000 SQDs
  • Aeroplan 75K : 75,000 SQMs or 75 SQSs, plus 9,000 SQDs
  • Aeroplan Super Elite : 100,000 SQMs or 100 SQSs, plus 20,000 SQDs

You'll get more benefits with higher status tiers, including the ability to select complimentary Preferred Seating as follows:

  • Aeroplan 25K and Aeroplan 35K : at check-in for all destinations
  • Aeroplan 50K : anytime when traveling within Canada and the U.S. (including Hawaii) or at check-in for all other destinations
  • Aeroplan 75K : anytime for all destinations
  • Aeroplan Super Elite : anytime for all destinations, including on basic economy fares

air canada book travel

You'll also earn eUpgrade certificates as you progress through status tiers. These let you upgrade flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Express and Air Canada Rouge from economy class to premium economy or business class.

As of 2023, Air Canada elite members can also pick Select Benefit Bundles that offer more rewards. Selections include bonus points earning, upgrade certificates and lounge passes. You'll have different choices at each status level.

Starting on Jan. 1, 2024, rather than choosing between eUpgrade credits and bonus SQMs, elite members will receive both:

  • Aeroplan 25K : four eUpgrade credits and 750 SQMs
  • Aeroplan 35K : six eUpgrade credits and 1,000 SQMs
  • Aeroplan 50K : eight eUpgrade credits and 1,250 SQMs
  • Aeroplan 75K : 10 eUpgrade credits and 1,500 SQMs
  • Aeroplan Super Elite : 12 eUpgrade credits and 2,500 SQMs

How to earn Air Canada Aeroplan points

air canada book travel

It's surprisingly easy to earn Air Canada Aeroplan points, even if you're not flying Air Canada.

Flying with Air Canada

Unlike most U.S. carriers, Air Canada has continued to award points based on flight distance. You also need to factor your fare class into your calculations. Some fares earn as little as 10% of miles flown, while business-class fares earn 150% of miles flown.

Here's a look at how much each fare earns:

air canada book travel

Those with Air Canada elite status can choose to earn bonus points on Air Canada flights (if chosen as a Select Benefit Bundle in 2023; automatically granted in 2024). Here's a breakdown of how many bonus points each tier earns:

  • Aeroplan 25K : 25%
  • Aeroplan 35K : 35%
  • Aeroplan 50K : 50%
  • Aeroplan 75K : 75%
  • Aeroplan Super Elite : 100%

Flying with Star Alliance and non-alliance partners

You'll earn points the same way when flying with an Air Canada partner, but the number of points you'll earn per mile flown varies by airline. You can find your partner's earning chart on Air Canada's airline partner page . Just find your partner on the list and click on it.

Earn points with the Air Canada Aeroplan credit card

New Chase Aeroplan® Credit Card applicants can earn 60,000 Aeroplan points after spending $3,000 in the first three months from account opening.

TPG values Aeroplan points at 1.5 cents each, making this sign-up bonus worth $900. Despite such a valuable welcome bonus, the Chase Aeroplan card has an annual fee of just $95.

With triple points in multiple categories, monthly bonus points, statement credits, Aeroplan elite status and discounted award pricing, this is an incredibly valuable card, especially if you ever fly Air Canada.

Those based in Canada have a few different options for Aeroplan credit cards. Three banks issue Aeroplan cards in Canada, and each card has different benefits, fees and points-earning rates. You'll want to assess each card and see which fits your needs and budget best. On the high end, you'll get benefits like free checked luggage, lounge access and a valuable welcome bonus.

Transferring credit card points to Aeroplan

air canada book travel

You can transfer the following credit card rewards to Aeroplan at a 1:1 transfer ratio:

  • American Express Membership Rewards points
  • Bilt Rewards points
  • Capital One miles
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points

The following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses with points and miles that you can transfer to your Aeroplan account:

  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • American Express® Gold Card
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
  • Ink Business Preferred Credit Card
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

Earning with retail partners

Air Canada has a shopping portal that lets you earn Aeroplan points with third-party vendors, such as Apple, Uber Eats and other popular merchants. You can click through the merchant's link on the Air Canada eStore before you make a purchase, and you'll earn a set number of points per dollar spent on your purchase. This can be a great way to earn bonus points on everyday purchases.

Note: Not all Air Canada retail partners are valid for points-earning purchases in the U.S. and Canada. Some are Canada-only, so double-check on the partner page before purchasing.

How to redeem Air Canada Aeroplan points

air canada book travel

You can use your Aeroplan points to fly worldwide; Air Canada offers a huge route network by itself, but its long list of alliance and non-alliance partners expands this list even further.

Unlike many U.S. carriers, Air Canada has kept a standard award chart. This means you can book award flights at predictable prices. It also removed fuel surcharges , so you'll only pay minimal taxes plus a 39 Canadian dollar (about $29) partner booking fee (if applicable).

Aeroplan's award chart

Aeroplan employs a hybrid distance- and region-based award chart. You'll pay based on your flight length, but pricing varies based on the region you fly to and from. You'll notice that each is very broadly defined.

air canada book travel

To find the cost of an award, determine the regions you're flying from and to. Then, calculate the distance between your origin and destination using a tool like Great Circle Mapper . Next, find the award chart for your region pair in the Air Canada award chart to determine the cost of your flight.

air canada book travel

Flights with standard saver award space will price at the lower end of the spectrum, while flights without this will price higher.

Air Canada for Business

Air Canada has a business rewards program dubbed Air Canada for Business . As of Oct. 3, Air Canada for Business temporarily paused new enrollments, stating the program is "evolving to provide you with updated benefits for business travelers in the coming months."

Businesses can use this program to earn rewards when employees book trips on Air Canada or select Lufthansa Group airlines like Lufthansa, Swiss and Brussels Airlines. These rewards are earned in addition to whatever the employee earns on their flights, so it's a win-win for the business and the employee.

These rewards aren't standard Aeroplan points. Instead, they're separate rewards currency that can be redeemed for things like Maple Leaf lounge passes, eUpgrade certificates and preferred seating discounts, among other perks.

For current business rewards members, be sure to visit the website for a detailed list of what your tier qualification will now include.

The best ways to redeem Air Canada Aeroplan points

air canada book travel

The Aeroplan award chart is full of interesting sweet spots and great deals. Here are some of the best ways to maximize the award chart and the program's interesting features, such as stopovers on one-way award tickets.

Book a mini round-the-world trip with stopovers

You can add one stopover to one-way tickets and two stopovers to round-trip tickets for 5,000 points apiece. These stopovers can be anywhere in the world, and Aeroplan lets you get creative with your routing.

The only major restriction to remember is that your connecting flight cannot require more than double the mileage cost of a nonstop flight to your final destination. This opens up a lot of interesting bookings. For example, you can book a mini round-the-world trip that takes advantage of a stopover, two round-trip tickets and multiple 24-hour layovers. Even better, you can now book stopover tickets online, but you may need to call in to book more complex itineraries with additional layovers.

Fly domestically on United from 6,000 points

You can book economy flights on United Airlines within the continental U.S. and Canada from just 6,000 Aeroplan points for flights up to 500 miles in length, such as from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to many destinations in the Northeast.

Book high-surcharge tickets without surcharges

Air Canada has joined United MileagePlus and Avianca LifeMiles in dropping fuel surcharges from Star Alliance award tickets. So, if you're debating where to transfer your Amex points or Capital One miles, consider transferring to Aeroplan to save on large fuel surcharges.

Fly business class from the East Coast to Europe

Many flights from the East Coast to Europe fall into the zero to 4,000 miles tier on the North America-to-Atlantic award chart. These flights cost just 60,000 points in business class and 90,000 points in first class, so they're a great way to hop across the Atlantic. These options are cheaper than what other Star Alliance programs, such as Avianca LifeMiles and United MileagePlus, charge for the same flights.

Fly business class to India for 85,000 points

You can book Star Alliance partners like United, Air India and Turkish Airlines between the U.S. and India for just 85,000 points each way in business class or 55,000 points in economy class. Best of all, there are no fuel surcharges.

Related: 10 things to know about flying Turkish Airlines

Bottom line

Air Canada's Aeroplan loyalty program is great. Solid redemption rates, flexible stopovers and no fuel surcharges mean you can get some excellent deals on award tickets. It also partners with many of the largest transferable points programs , so you may be sitting on a variety of rewards that can ultimately become Aeroplan points.

Even if you aren't planning to visit Canada or fly on Air Canada, you should consider the program for your next points transfer or major redemption.

What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

» Learn more: Should you insure your cruise?

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

» Learn more: How annual (multi-trip) travel insurance works

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Some credit cards offer trip cancellation and rental car insurance if you use the card to book the trip or car.

When you book a trip with your credit card, depending on the card you use, you may already receive trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Your hotel room has a good cancellation policy.

It's already included in your credit card.

You haven't booked any nonrefundable activities.

» Learn more: When you don't need travel insurance

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

Unpredictability is one of the mind-opening joys of travel, but travel insurance should contain no surprises. The time you spend to understand your options will be well worth the peace of mind as you embark on your next adventure.

Whether you’re seeking a single or a long-term policy, each travel insurance option offers different strengths and weaknesses. Choosing the right policy depends on your trip needs, your budget and how important various benefits are to you.

The winner takes it all

Forget inedible meals, postage stamp-sized economy seats and sky-high fares – the airline industry has stepped up in 2023. From top-tier comfort and cleanliness to the best customer service and family-friendly facilities, we've rounded up a selection of the winners from Skytrax's World Airline Awards 2023.

Click or scroll on for a look at the airlines pulling out all the stops to make your flying experience that little bit more special.

This award analyzes an airline’s progress year-on-year, examining its change in global rating within Skytrax’s World Airline Awards program and its performance improvements in the individual award categories. Coming out on top as the Most Improved Airline for 2023, Kuwait Airways has been recognized for its customer-first approach and its commitment to service upgrades.

World’s Most Improved Airline: Kuwait Airways

From cabin crew getting swish new uniforms in 2022 to introducing a complimentary chauffeur service for first and business-class passengers, as well as goals of owning 50 aircraft by 2025, Kuwait Airways is going from strength to strength. The national carrier for the state of Kuwait currently operates flights to 60 destinations worldwide, including in Egypt, India, the UK and America.

World’s Cleanest Airline: ANA All Nippon Airways

ANA (All Nippon Airways) is one of the most consistently high-rated airlines both in Asia and worldwide. It picked up the World’s Cleanest Airline award for the third year in a row in 2023, while also holding onto its 2022 crown for the World’s Best Airport Services. Founded in 1952, Japan’s largest airline – although not the national carrier – is one of the most significant airlines in Asia, operating 43 international and  61 domestic routes.

<p>The airline focuses on an excellent in-flight experience infused with hints of Japanese culture. It provides passengers with amazing amenities, food, cleanliness and friendly cabin crew. After two years of tough COVID-19 restrictions, Japan resumed visa-free entry and independent travel in October 2022 – and it looks like ANA is rising to the occasion.</p> <p><strong><a href="http://bit.ly/3roL4wv">Love this? Running away with the Best Cabin Crew title, the national carrier for Indonesia is back on form in 2023 after winning the award for five consecutive years from 2014. Garuda Indonesia connects more than 90 destinations worldwide to its home country and the region of Southeast Asia, launching over 600 flights per day.

World’s Best Airline Cabin Crew: Garuda Indonesia

The airline prides itself on sharing Indonesia’s traditional hospitality and unique culture with its passengers. The Skytrax website rates Garuda Indonesia five stars for customer service, with reviews praising the cabin crew’s attentive, welcoming, courteous and compassionate manner.

World’s Best Economy Class: Japan Airlines

Operating almost 200 routes worldwide and serving destinations such as Tokyo, London, Paris, Melbourne, Osaka and Los Angeles, Japan’s national carrier was founded in 1951 and has been building up a significant fan base ever since. Those flying economy with Japan Airlines regularly wax lyrical about how comfortable the seats are, as well as the general smooth-running of the experience.

World’s Best Premium Economy Class: EVA Air

EVA Air's premium economy fares come with at-seat slippers, noise-canceling headphones, a water bottle, pillow and soft blanket, as well as a complimentary overnight bag. On a long-haul flight, expect the food and drink to come flying thick and fast, from congee for breakfast to snacks of cheese crackers. In mid-2024, the airline is set to update all of its Boeing 787-9s to include a premium economy class due to demand.

World's Best Regional Airline: Bangkok Airways

As well as bagging the Best Regional Airline in Asia award, Bangkok Airways took home first place for the World’s Best Regional Airline. It might not come as a surprise: it's the seventh consecutive year the airline has won both awards. It serves 11 Thai hotspots and a growing number of international destinations, including Cambodia, Singapore, the Maldives, Myanmar, Hong Kong and Laos.

Alaska Airlines has been running for over 90 years and today services more than 44 million annual passengers and 120-plus destinations across five countries, including the US, Mexico and Belize. It wins North America's Best Regional Airline in 2023, closely followed by jetBlue Airways and 2022's winner WestJet in second and third place. The fifth-largest airline in the United States, Alaska Airlines will add its first flights to the Bahamas imminently in time for some winter sun.

Best Regional Airline in North America: Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines has championed the use of sustainable biofuels since 2011 and was also the first airline to compost and remove single-use plastic straws and citrus picks from its planes and passenger lounges. The future is looking even more revolutionary for the region’s favorite airline, as it has just begun partnering with CLEAR to speed up and streamline its customers' passage through airport security.

World’s Best Low-Cost Airline: AirAsia

This reliable airline has been awarded the World's Best Low-Cost Airline since 2010 and is well-recognized by other industry heavyweights for its budget offerings. The Premium Flatbed seat on its Airbus A330 is considered among the world’s best-value premium cabins, being fully reclinable with adjustable head and foot rests, plus comfy bedding and a privacy screen. Complimentary meals, priority boarding and baggage collection, and access to hours of inflight entertainment are included in the cost too.
