The most Googled travel destinations of 2023

By Olivia Morelli

Cityscape of the city of Porto Douro river with its old boat and its typical coloured houses on the water's edge

This year finally felt like a return to pre-pandemic travel norms. Countries that suffered as a result of tourist drops began seeing increased footfall once more, and travellers took those bucket-list trips that they spent their lockdowns planning. But as the year comes to a close, we’re looking ahead to 2024 and the travels the new year will bring. As well as creating our own lists – see the Condé Nast Traveller roundup of the best places to go in 2024 , carefully curated by our editors from around the globe – we’re also taking inspiration from our readers.

Every year, Google publishes its ‘Year in Search’ data, a report showing what users have Googled over the past 12 months. We’ve got an exclusive look at the travel section of the data – the destinations you’ve been Googling the most this year. The data has been contextualised to take into account current events (for example, Tel Aviv was trending as a travel destination before the war broke out.) Below, take a look at the top 10 cities and countries that have seen the biggest search increases on Google year on year, and find inspiration for your 2024 travels.

The most Googled countries of 2023

Atlas mountains Morocco

10. Morocco

In September of this year, an earthquake hit Morocco , the aftermath of which was devastating. The country is still recovering, but the response from travellers was strong. It's not often the case that travel is the answer in response to a crisis, but as tourism is Morocco ’s biggest revenue stream, in this case, it was necessary. Travellers were encouraged to continue visiting the country to explore all it has to offer – and it has plenty. A jewel box of colours, sights and sounds in its cities, and a vast expanse of history and culture beyond – we’re not surprised the support for this gem of a country is in the top 10 this year.

Valetta Malta

This island is a hit European destination. Its history runs deep, and its beauty runs deeper. The country has been used as the backdrop for many iconic films and TV series ( Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Troy to name a few), but beyond its honey-hued streets lies restaurants, bars and hotels waiting to be explored. Find out more about why we love Malta , or start planning your trip with this guide to Valletta’s best restaurants .

Chicken and Mushroom rock formation in the White Desert of Egypt

Clearly, we don’t need to wax lyrical about the beauty of Egypt – you’re already plotting your next bucket-list escape. There is, of course, plenty of ancient history to discover, but weave your way through the country’s streets to find hidden treasures pharaohs would be envious of. Art galleries and souks are brimming with wallet-thinning prizes, but the glistening Nile is sparkly enough for those looking for memories over souvenirs. Away from the river, the Sahara covers 94 per cent of the country, leaving an overwhelmingly large (yet surprisingly untraversed) region to explore if you venture inland.

The best hotels in Hong Kong

7. Thailand

Thailand is home to 1,430 islands, so while you may already be planning a trip to the country, choosing which island to visit is your next task. Each is different from the other, while white sand beaches and rustic-chic restaurants are guaranteed. Choose Koh Samui for a wellness escape (the island is famed for its yoga havens) or Koh Tao for some serious underwater adventures – it’s nicknamed Turtle Island for good reason. Check out our guide to figure out the best time to visit Thailand , before scouting out some of the top Thai hotels on offer.

Natural rock arch on Cyprus

Floating in between Greece, Turkey and Lebanon, this is a melting pot of cultures. Come for craggy mountains topped with snow, powdery soft beaches lapped by the twinkling Mediterranean and some excellent Cypriot food dotted around the island. Nature lovers can spend hours in the sea (it's known for having some of the world’s best wreck dives), history buffs can ogle at Byzantine churches and oenophiles can while away days taste-testing their way through the country’s lush vineyards.

Dubrovnik Croatia

Croatia has been gradually garnering a reputation as a European travel hotspot. A more affordable holiday destination than some of its neighbouring countries, go island hopping around some of the teardrop gems that pepper the Adriatic shores ( Korčula is our favourite), head inland for delicious foodie trips around Split or Zagreb or delve into the historic walled city of Dubrovnik. But the beach is the place to be in this country – with more than 4,000km of coastline, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Rural road leading to Pico volcano Azores islands Portugal

4. Portugal

From the burst of exciting restaurants opening in the north to the blue-water sanctuaries of the south, there is so much awaiting travellers in Portugal. Porto is a relative newcomer to Europe’s foodie championship, but it’s gained a quick reputation as the one to watch. The remote archipelago of the Azores is often overlooked in favour of the country’s beach resorts – think thermal waters, turquoise lagoons and cloud-puncturing volcanoes. Lisbon , of course, needs no introduction – plus, it was recently named Europe's most budget-friendly city break for 2023 .

Vineyards

We’ll never tire of Italy and, it seems, neither will you. The country is a mishmash of gorgeous fairytale towns, bustling cities and pristine beaches. While the shopping in Milan is obviously second to none, the city’s café scene is equally worth exploring. Florence has some of the country’s best hotels, and the Tuscan countryside beyond is like something straight out of a painting. For food, it’s got to be Rome – here’s our guide to Rome’s best restaurants – but the capital is also one of Europe’s most artistic cities , so be sure to visit the endless array of galleries and museums on your next trip.

Park Guell in Barcelona Spain

This country is beautiful year-round, but there’s something particularly special about visiting Spain in the off-season . The cities empty, the beaches quieten, yet there’s still magic in the air. Our readers voted San Sebastian the best city in Europ e in our 2023 Readers' Choice Awards and the best city for food in the world ; and further east, Barcelona remains one of our favourite Spanish cities, with a host of hotels , restaurants and things to do .

Mykonos Greece

Greece has topped the list of the most Googled countries to travel to in 2023. From the whitewashed island of Mykonos with its sugar cube buildings and iconic addresses to the jungle vibes of Kefalonia, known for its hiking trails and rustic villages, Greece is the destination that keeps on giving. Start in Athens, home to some of the world’s best bars , to get a taste of the country’s culinary masterwork (see our guide to the best restaurants in Athens ). Then head to your Greek island of choice – will it be sunsets from the Santorini crater? Crowd-free beaches in Corfu ? Late-summer sunshine in Crete ? Whatever you choose, Greece is bound to impress, time after time.

The most Googled travel cities and islands of 2023

Amsterdam

10. Amsterdam

There’s always more to uncover in Amsterdam. The destination has long been one of our favourite European city breaks, but in recent years it's gone from strength to strength. Earlier this year, Eurostar announced a brand-new sleeper train going from Brussels to Berlin, making travel into the city much easier (and more sustainable). There are a host of pocket-friendly hotels to choose from and a slew of new restaurants popping up around the city.

Cork Cityscape

Cork isn’t shy of good press. The city is renowned for its pretty streets, with corners being compared to the likes of Copenhagen or Murano in Venice. Explore Cork’s hipster inner city, where snug pubs, bars with live music and friendly locals welcome travellers. Just outside of the city, stroll through cutesy villages like Kinsale (one of Ireland’s most beautiful towns ) where buildings are painted the colours of the rainbow, or head along to one of the many world-renowned seafood restaurants along the harbour for a fish supper – it’s no wonder this city has been pulling in a new crowd this year.

The Red Fort New Delhi

If Delhi isn’t on your travel wishlist, it should be. It’s the world’s second-largest urban area (after Tokyo ), with a medley of things to see, do and eat. There’s endless fodder, from museums and street art to wildlife watching and Asia’s largest spice market – plus, the hotels are world-class, too. The Leela Palace, with its Murano chandeliers and giant elephant statues, is a mind-blowing masterclass in decadence, and The Oberoi is an oasis of calm in the middle of the bustling city.

Palermo Sicily

You don't need to hear from us why Sicily is so special. Stranded between Europe and Africa, it is the perfect destination for a sunny holiday. The food, obviously, is Italian at its very best – piled-up plates of pasta with fresh seafood, thick slabs of Sicilian-style pizza and creamy cooling gelato – and the beaches are endlessly alluring. Explore 18th-century mansions and extravagant palazzos before taking a dip in the sparkling Tyrrhenian waters. Take a look at our edit of the very best hotels in Sicily for more inspiration.

La Rochelle France

6. La Rochelle

Taking over from France’s more typical tourist traps, this port city is a pretty place for a European getaway. Imagine a fairytale French seaside town– the kind you’d dream about moving to when life gets a little too overwhelming – and you’re sure to picture this place. The food, naturally, revolves around the sea, so buckle down for a series of stellar fish dishes, fresh out of the water. Then, stroll through the city to follow in the footsteps of some of the country’s greatest writers; Voltaire, Rabelais, Sartre and Laclos all flocked here when in need of inspiration.

Marrakech Morocco

5. Marrakech

Google this colourful city, and you’ll get a glimpse of just how spectacular Marrakech is. Upon visiting the Moroccan city, days are spent weaving between the labyrinthine streets, uncovering endless gems hidden in peaceful pockets. Beyond the glittering souks lie some breathtaking places to stay – big-name hotels rub shoulders with small, independent riads that offer a hub for cooling off and winding down.

Courtyard of the Maidens at the Royal Alczar of Seville

It’s little wonder this Spanish city is so high on this list. A warm-weather winner, Seville is the perfect place for an off-season trip (there are daily high temperatures of 20°C in November and 16°C to 18°C in the winter months), plus it’s got everything you’re looking for in a Euro city break. Spend days exploring the tourist hotspots without having to queue in the heat – the Royal Alcázar of Seville is a must-see – and clambering to the top of the cathedral gives epic cityscape views that are often impossible to witness in the summer heat. Stop by any of the city’s tapas bars, but our favourite is El Rinconcillo, a locally revered restaurant dating back to the 17th century.

The Jaffo district in Tel Aviv Israel

3. Tel Aviv

As mentioned above, Google has contextualised its data, so Tel Aviv appeared on the list prior to the outbreak of war. At the time of writing, the FDCO is advising against all but essential travel to Israel.

The Orlando Wetlands Park in central Florida

An unexpected entry at number 2, but this American city certainly pulls its weight when it comes to tourism. In 2022, Orlando had nearly 5 million international visitors, with the UK providing the second-largest number of travellers heading to the city (according to Travel Weekly ). Beyond classic Disneyland wonders, this Florida favourite is home to a startingly impressive array of restaurants, from excellent omakase to zesty mezcalerias.

St. Paul's Bay Rhodes island Greece

Of all the islands in Greece to visit, this one is pretty special. After the tragic wildfires that purged the island earlier this year, stripping it of 15 per cent of its land, Rhodes is slowly building itself back up. Visit the old town, where a maze of alleys weave around Byzantine churches standing strong alongside Roman ruins and generations-old restaurants. By the coast, dramatic cliffs give epic views of powdery golden beaches spilling out into the Mediterranean, while inland alpine forests are perfect for early morning hikes that lead to crumbling hilltop castles and ancient ruins. The island has yet to fully recover, but the interest from travellers eager to support Rhodes is testament to the island’s beauty.

To celebrate its 15 years, google street view has released a list of the most-viewed tourist destinations in the world.

Taj Mahal Is The Third Most-Viewed Tourist Place On Google Street View

Launched in 2007, Google Street View is celebrating its 15th candle. To mark the occasion, the tech giant has rolled out 15 amazing Street View collections. One of these lists includes the most-viewed tourist destinations in the world. Taj Mahal has bagged the third spot. Here are the three most-viewed tourist attractions on Google Street View. By Karan Kaushik

Google Street View was the brainchild of Google co-founder Larry Page, who envisioned the possibility of creating a 360-degree map of an entire destination. 15 years later, the tool has over 220 billion Street View images from over 100 countries across the world. Google Street View offers a virtual experience of exploring a destination to its users.

First on the list is Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. The mixed-use skyscraper, which holds several world records, including the tallest building and tallest free-standing structure, towers a whopping 2,717 feet over downtown Dubai. The building spans 162 floors and has an observation deck, also the highest in the world, on the 124th floor. Burj Khalifa , inaugurated in 2010, was conceived by award-winning architect Adrian Smith of Chicago-based firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, the Eiffel Tower in Paris has been ranked second by Google Street View. Weighing a whopping 10-tonne and completed in 1889, the Tower attracts tourists from all parts of the world, with a reported seven million visitors each year. The Eiffel Tower has grown since it was first built in 1889 and dubbed the “300m Tower,” coming in at 1,024 feet, thanks to a large flagpole placed on top flying the French  flag.

Taj Mahal, Agra, India

India’s most iconic tourist spot Taj Mahal is the third-most viewed destination in the world on Google Street View. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife, the Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world. It is often the first place people end up right after they land in India because its praises are spread far and wide across the world. There are very few words that can describe the absolute grandeur and magnanimity that is imbibed in this structure.

Google Street View has also released a list of the 10 most visited countries on its platform. These are as follows.

How to get ready for a road trip using Google’s travel site and Maps

Avatar for Andrew Romero

Due to the pandemic, travel has been slow this past year, and you might be a little rusty when it comes to picking up and traveling somewhere to visit friends and family or just planning a getaway. Whatever the case, Google has a few helpful tools in Google Maps and Google’s travel site to help you get started on making those plans and staying safe along the way.

Table of contents

Getting started with google’s travel website, using google map’s road trip feature, planning a trip around covid-19 restrictions.

Google’s travel website is meant to be a companion site that can help you plan all of the details of your trip. You can use it to book flights, make an itinerary, and even explore interesting places to visit at your destination. If you have a Gmail account , there’s a good chance that any flight reservation you make will automatically appear the next time you use Google’s travel site, making it that much easier to plan the trip’s details. If not, Google Travel may suggest locations based on your search history and interests. While that may be a little creepy, it can also be pretty helpful.

If no destination has been chosen yet, Google will suggest locations in the “Explore” tab. You can filter these locations based on flight and hotel cost, giving you a pretty good idea of where a nice place to go would be. After choosing a destination, Google gives you a few options as far as what you’d want to know. There’s a “Discover” section that will break down various points of interest. In bigger cities, you may find the number of things to do or see endless. Fortunately, you can filter out locations and activities based on your personal interest.

If there are a few places that pique your curiosity, or you already know you want to go there, Google allows you to save them to the trip and pin them to the trip’s detail page. This serves as a sort of to-do list when you get where you’re going.

Google Travel bookmarks

If you don’t plan on flying and want to avoid certain COVID-19 hotspots, Google Maps is probably the way to go. Just this year, Google added a feature to the Maps website that allows you to add stops along the route when planning the trip. Previously this was possible on mobile, but it didn’t lend itself well to planning out a road trip to be shared with friends and family. Adding stops along the way with Google Maps on mobile was best for impromptu stops.

Once you’ve defined a starting point and destination, you can add stops along the way. You can add anything from a city to rest stops and gas stations. You can do this by either manually entering a stop you already know you would like to pause at, or by choosing one of the criteria towards the top of the screen. Google Maps lets you narrow down your search by these criteria:

When selecting from one of these criteria, Google will also suggest a few filters. For instance, choosing hotels will bring up a “Guest rating” filter, as well as an “Amenities” filter, so you make sure that you’re getting free wifi. Of course, if none of these fit the bill, you can always just search for what you want. The nice thing is that these suggestions can add a little flare to the trip by suggesting something you would have never thought about, making the road trip that much more exciting.

Once you find a point of interest, hit add stop , and Google Maps will automatically insert it in the right spot on the planned route. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way to define how much time you plan on spending at that stop, so the trip time might have to be calculated manually. Besides that, Google Maps has become a handy road trip planner with enough tools to get you where you’re going and let you have some fun along the way.

google tourist places

The major caveat to traveling right now is the looming risk of COVID-19. Fortunately, the travel website by Google and Maps both supply some great tools for managing risk and assessing where you plan to go.

On the travel website, you can find up-to-date COVID-19 information for your destination pretty easily. You can access this information by searching for and clicking on the destination . Under the main card that lists the date of your trip, area name, and weather, there will be a COVID information section. This section has useful information like the CDC’s travel advisory website, COVID-19 stats for that specific area, and the number of local cases.

Site default logo image

Clicking on the “Travel advisory” button brings you to the CDC’s COVID-19 map. This map is a risk assessment of most destinations in the world, color-coded depending on how risky it is to travel there. The second button will search Google for COVID-19 information on the location you’re traveling to, detailing data like news, statistics, and testing locations. The “Local cases” button will show even more detailed information about active cases, vaccines administered, and deaths in the area. All of this is fantastic information to have when traveling and comes in handy when planning your trip.

Why use the Places API

  • Display condo rentals within major metropolitan areas with results targeted specifically to cities.
  • Include place details in a pickup or delivery status update.
  • Display a list of parks in an area along with user-submitted photos and reviews.
  • Provide people planning trips with contact information, reviews, and price levels for establishments along the way.

What can you do with the Places API

  • Provide place search results from different types of users queries, such as text input, nearby locations, and ambiguous or categorical user queries.
  • Enable autocomplete features for different search types, either specific text queries or categorical queries.
  • Refine the type of details returned about a place, such as operating hours, a summary, user reviews, and a photo.
  • Add high-quality photos to locations served by your application.

Once you have a place ID, you can use the Places API to request more details about a particular establishment or point of interest, such as its complete address, phone number, user rating, and reviews.

Choose your version of Places API

Places API supports two API versions: Places API are the existing APIs and Places API (New) are the next generation versions of the APIs.

With the release of Places API (New), your first task is to decide which set of APIs to use. This is true if you are a new customer or an existing customer already using the APIs. Use this guide to learn the key differences between the two APIs.

How the Places API works

Places api (new).

Places API (New) accepts requests as a standard URL with a specific service endpoint, such as /places or places:searchText and returns a JSON response. Places API (New) supports authorization by API key and OAuth token. The following example makes a Place Details request to return the address components for a place ID using an API key:

Places API accepts requests as a standard URL with a specific service endpoint, such as /place or /photo . The endpoints also accept the type of format specified in the request, either JSON or XML. The service request uses parameters relevant to that specific endpoint to refine the data returned. The following example makes a Place Details request to return the address components for a place ID in JSON format:

In this instance, the service uses the provided place ID to find the requested place and return the address components in JSON format.

The following table summarizes the resources available through the Places API.

See more, plan less – try Google Trips

Article's hero media

We wanted to reduce the hassle and help travelers enjoy their hard-earned vacations. So today, we’re introducing a new mobile app to help you instantly plan each day of your trip with just a few taps of your finger:  Google Trips .

Introducing Google Trips

Google Trips is a personalized tour guide in your pocket. Each trip contains key categories of information, including day plans, reservations, things to do, food & drink, and more, so you have everything you need at your fingertips. The entire app is available offline — simply tap the “Download” button under each trip to save it to your phone.

Choose your own adventure

For the top 200 cities in the world, Google Trips shows you a variety of day plans featuring the most popular daily itineraries. We’ve automatically assembled the most popular sights, attractions, and local gems into a full day’s tour — all based on historic visits by other travelers. Say you’re visiting Barcelona. You can choose from multiple day plans, like “Eixample District,” which maps out the can’t-miss buildings by Antoni Gaudi, the famous Spanish architect.

Plan each day of your trip like magic

Say your friends told you that you have to see the Sagrada Familia — and you’re looking for suggestions on things to do around that spot. Press the “+” button in the day plans tile to jump into a map view containing all the top attractions in your destination. If you’re time constrained, you can specify above the map whether you have just the morning or afternoon, versus a full day. Then simply tap and pin the Sagrada Familia to build your itinerary around it. Google Trips automatically fills in the day for you. If you want more options, tap the “magic wand” button for more nearby sights. You can pin any new spots you like, and if you want even more, each tap of the “magic wand” instantly gives you a new itinerary with updated nearby attractions like Palau Macaya or Parc del Guinardo, so you can build your own custom itinerary in minutes while munching on your morning churro.

Luxury travel company Kuoni recently released its list of the world's top must-see travel experiences.

To rank the experiences, Kuoni looked for events that occur no more than twice a year and had the most Google searches.

In the top 10 must-see travel experiences based on Google searches, only two are in the U.S., with two more U.S. experiences being a part of the top 20.

No.1 must-see travel experience: Manhattanhenge

New York City's Manhattanhenge is the most searched-for travel experience — the NYC event had over 1.3 million annual Google searches.

The rare event occurs when the Sun appears between the city's grid as it's low in the sky and setting, according to the American Museum of Natural History . The "Manhattanhenge Effect" will occur between May 29 and July 13 this year.

According to the museum, some of the best places to view the Manhattanhenge are from Manhattan's east/west thoroughfares and to get the best view, it recommends finding a spot as far east as possible.

The best streets to see the Manhattanhenge include 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street, and 57th Street.

If you’re planning a trip, you might be wondering how to figure out where to go and in what order. Luckily, Google has a free tool that you can use in order to get a better sense of your travel plans. We’ll walk you through how to make a travel itinerary with Google Maps through its My Maps feature. In a few easy steps, you can master an excellent organizational tool that’ll help you plan the best trip possible.

Setting Up Your Map

Step 1 Sign in to My Maps on your web browser.

  • Unfortunately, as of October 2021, Google no longer supports the “My Maps” app on phones. If you’re on mobile, you’ll have to use your phone’s web browser to access the site while on the go. [2] X Research source
  • If you don’t already have a Google account, setting one up is a quick process. A Google account gives you a number of benefits, including a new gmail address. Check out this link to start the set-up process: https://accounts.google.com/signup/v2/webcreateaccount?flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=SignUp

Step 2 Create a new map through the home screen.

  • For instance, your might name your map something like “California Summer Trip 2022,” and you could enter a description like, “Places to see and eat during two-week California road trip.”

Step 4 Search for places to visit on your trip.

  • For example, for a California road trip, you might enter “Golden Gate Bridge” into the search box. My Maps will automatically direct you to its location.

Step 5 Add the locations of any places you want to visit to your map.

  • For instance, if you’ve searched for “Golden Gate Bridge,” there will be a white box that offers some information on the location, and even a rating from other users. Click on the “Add to map” button to send it to your saved locations.

Step 6 Add descriptions to your saved locations.

  • For example, you might fill in the description to the “Golden Gate Bridge” box with something like, “Spend at least 1 hour here—must-see location.”

Step 7 Color-code your locations for convenience.

  • You might consider changing the colors of your pins to match how important each location is to your trip. For example, must-see locations could be red pins, your housing spots could be green pins, and optional places to visit could remain as blue pins.

Creating an Itinerary and Planning Routes

Step 1 Organize your selected places with the “layers” function.

  • For example, you might have a layer titled “Places to see,” one titled “Places to eat,” and one titled “Places to sleep.” You can then put sightseeing destinations, restaurants, and hotels you want to stay at in their respective layers.

Step 2 Plan your travel routes using your Google Map.

  • You can add more than one location to a single route. For example, if you wanted to plot a route from Big Sur to the Golden Gate Bridge, and then to Palo Alto, you can add all three locations to your route layer and create a multi-stop path. [11] X Research source
  • By clicking on the three dots next to the layer with your travel route, then selecting “Step-by-step directions,” My Maps will create a set of directions for your travel. Handy!

Step 3 Use your map to create a daily schedule.

  • For example, by using My Maps, you might notice that seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, walking around San Francisco, and eating at a restaurant in Berkeley are close enough to all be doable in one day, while visiting Big Sur might be better saved for another afternoon. My Maps can help you plan out the most efficient trip possible, so you can enjoy your travels even more.

Step 4 Use the “Share” option to loop your friends in on travel plans.

  • When sharing your map, you can also choose the option that allows others to edit the map as well. With this option selected, your friends can pick places that they’re interested in as well, so you can have them all on the same document. [13] X Research source

Step 5 Print your map for offline use.

  • Although My Maps can’t be viewed offline, you can download an offline map of any areas you’re interested in on your phone. Using the Google Maps app, type in a location into the search bar, tap the name of the location, then navigate to the option “Download offline map.” [15] X Research source

The little-known Google Maps feature that can help organize your travel

How google maps lists can help you in your travels — and how to use it.

Get around faster with lists.

If you haven’t spent a lot of time inside Google Maps — besides getting from A to B and finding the nearest restaurant or bar — then you might not know about all the various features stuffed into the app since it first launched in 2005.

One of those features is lists: They’re not hugely prominent inside the app, but they let you gather together curated lists of places on the map, giving you a way to plan our a road trip, shortlist a selection of museums, or remember favorite spots that you want to get back to. You can even share your lists with others.

Lists can come in handy in all kinds of ways, and their simplicity also makes them very flexible — see if you can find a use for them the next time you open up Google Maps. Here, we’re going to focus on the web version of Google Maps, but the same features are easy to find in the apps for Android and iOS, too.

Starting a Google Maps list

To start a list, pick out a place that you’d like to be on the list. If you click on it on the map, it’ll get a pin on top of it, and an info panel pops up on the left. Click the Save button, and congratulations — you’ve started making lists on Google Maps.

You’ll see that Google Maps has created some lists for you, with Starred places as the default. There are also Favorites , Want to go , and Travel plans , but if you don’t like any of those suggestions, you can begin building your own list by clicking New list .

Lists can be compiled quickly.

You’ll be asked to give your new list a name and click Create , and that’s all there is to it. The new list should pop up in the panel on the far left. To add more places to the same list, click somewhere else on the map, then click Save , then choose your new list.

As you keep on adding places, you’ll notice that your listed spots are marked on the map, making them easier to find as you zoom out. Custom lists are all shown with blue and white circles as markers—you can’t create your own custom markers, such as the yellow stars used for the Starred places list, which is a bit of a shame.

Names and descriptions can be added to lists.

You can also add places to a list by choosing Saved in the navigation pane on the left. Click Lists , then one of your lists, then the three dots (to the right), and Edit list . To begin with, you can add a 400-character description of the list if you think it needs more explanation (handy if you’re sharing it with someone else).

Click Add a place , and you can search for a particular spot to add to the list—this might save you some time in terms of panning across the map and zooming in and out. Click the small X next to it to remove a place from one of your lists. All the changes you make are automatically saved as you go.

Managing your Google Maps lists

Once you’ve started creating a few lists, you can get to them via the Saved link on the left of the interface. Another way to get to them is to type the list name into the main Google Maps search box. When you select a list, the map view changes, so you get an overview of all the places that have been saved to it.

Click the three dots next to a list on the Lists view, and you can hide the markers from the map if the view is getting too cluttered. You can also select Edit list , which takes you to the screen we saw before. You can add and remove list items and even add notes about each place. You can’t, however, change the order.

List entries get marked on the map.

On the Lists view, click the three dots next to a list, and you’ll see various options for sharing the list with others. Choose Send link to view if you want other people to be able to see your list of places but not make changes—this automatically makes the list public, too, if it isn’t already.

Choose Invite to edit if you want other people to be able to see the list and make changes to it—again; the list will be made public if it’s currently set to private. This is helpful if you’re working on travel plans with others who want to contribute.

It’s simple to share lists with other people.

If you select Sharing options , you can switch the list between being Private and being Shared . Obviously, if you make a shared list private, everyone else besides you is going to lose access to it. If you then later need to share the list again, you can do so from here.

While you don’t get a huge number of options with your lists, they have their uses—from sharing a list of checkpoints with a walking club to making sure you get to see everywhere you want to see on your next city break—and everything syncs seamlessly across all the devices where you’ve got Google Maps installed of course.

Utilizing Offline Maps

When you're heading out on a trip, one thing you definitely don't want to worry about is losing access to your maps when your signal drops. That's where offline maps come in handy. Google Maps allows you to download maps for offline use, ensuring you never get lost even when you're off the grid.

Downloading maps for offline use is a straightforward process. Follow these steps:

  • Open the Google Maps app on your smartphone or tablet.
  • Tap on your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  • Choose Offline maps.
  • Tap Select your own map in the following window.
  • Drag the map window to your desired area.
  • Select Download.

Depending on the size of the area you're downloading and your internet connection speed, this process may take a few moments.

Once the download is complete, you'll be able to access the map even without an internet connection. Offline maps are not only convenient, but they can also save you time and frustration. Imagine hiking in a remote area and losing your cell signal — having the offline map ensures you can still navigate your way back to your starting point without any hassle. This is also one of the many secret Google Maps features that can come in handy.

Customizing Your Route With Multiple Stops

We all have days packed with errands or sightseeing, where we just wish we could plan the routes efficiently. Google Maps allows you to do that by customizing your route with multiple stops. It's a nifty feature that can save you time and make your trips more organized.

Follow these steps:

  • Open Google Maps on your device and enter your final destination.
  • Click on the three buttons next to your starting point and select Add stop.
  • You can add multiple stops by repeating this step.
  • Rearrange stops by dragging the three lines next to each destination.

Now, Google Maps will calculate the most efficient route for you, taking into account all your stops along the way. This is perfect for those days when you have several places to visit or errands to run, but you want to make sure you're not zigzagging all over town. It can also save you time and fuel. Plus, it's a great way to ensure you don't forget any important stops along the way.

When customizing your route with multiple stops on Google Maps, keep in mind to arrange your stops in a logical order to minimize backtracking and optimize efficiency. Additionally, consider traffic conditions and estimated travel times between each stop to plan your schedule accordingly. Lastly, ensure that all stops are accurately inputted to avoid any confusion or missed destinations along the way.

Taking Advantage Of Live Traffic Updates

This feature provides real-time information about traffic conditions, allowing you to avoid packed routes and save valuable time.

As you navigate with Google Maps, the app constantly monitors traffic conditions along your route. If there is heavy traffic, accidents, or road closures ahead, Google Maps will highlight the problematic area on the map using yellow or red markers.

To enable live traffic updates, open the Google Maps app and enter your destination. Once your route is set, Google Maps will display real-time traffic information along the way, including any incidents or slowdowns. You can then choose to follow the suggested route or explore alternative options based on the traffic conditions.

When using live traffic updates on Google Maps, keep in mind to regularly check for updates throughout your journey to stay informed about changing road conditions. You can also report problems on the road yourself on Google Maps . Lastly, be flexible with your travel plans and prepared to follow alternative routes suggested by Google Maps to avoid congestion and minimize travel time.

By taking advantage of live traffic updates, you can make informed decisions about your route and avoid getting stuck in gridlock. Whether you're commuting to work or heading out on a road trip, this feature can help you reach your destination more efficiently.

Exploring Nearby Attractions And Restaurants

When you're in a new area, or even just exploring your own neighborhood, Google Maps can be a great tool for discovering nearby attractions and restaurants.

To start exploring:

  • Open Google Maps and zoom in on the area of your interest. You should see several options below the search bar, including Restaurants, Gas, Coffee, Shopping, ATMs, and more.
  • Click on the option you want to explore. For instance, if you are looking for places to eat nearby, select Restaurants to see a list of dining options in the area. Each restaurant will be marked with its location on the map, along with details such as the establishment's name, its rating, and sometimes photos or reviews.
  • Refine your search further by applying filters for rating and distance.
  • After selecting a restaurant that catches your interest, click on it to view more detailed information, including its address, hours of operation, contact details, and directions on how to get there.

Google Maps also allows you to call the restaurant directly from the app if you wish to make a reservation or inquire about menu items.

You can explore all these categories by swiping right on the options pane below the search bar. To view the full list, click on the More button (three dots) at the very end.

Create A Custom Map To Share With Friends And Family

You can also easily create a custom map and share it with whoever you want on Google Maps. It's a great way to collaborate on travel plans, recommend must-visit places, or simply share your favorite local hangouts.

  • Open Google Maps on your computer and sign into your Google account.
  • Click on the menu icon and choose Saved > Maps > Open My Maps.
  • Start a new map by clicking the Create A New Map button.
  • Give your map a title and a description that encapsulates the essence of your adventure or theme. This could be anything from "Family Road Trip to Yellowstone" to "Best Coffee Shops in New York City."
  • Populate your map with markers. Click on the marker icon, then click on the location on the map you wish to mark. For each marker, you can add a detailed description, upload photos, and even include links for more information.
  • Additionally, Google My Maps allows you to draw paths and shapes, perfect for outlining routes or highlighting areas of interest.
  • Once your map is ready, click on the Share button. Here, you'll be prompted to set the map's privacy settings. You can choose to make it public, share it with specific people, or keep it private with a link.
  • Finally, invite your friends via email or simply send them the link.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.
