I am trying to do some research on how many pros are using this shaft for their irons? I think Poulter does but can’t make anyone else. I am kind of surprised more guys don’t use it....? Anyone know of a good resource for iron shaft counts on tour? Thanks.

LZ was the 5th most used iron shaft model in 2020 (Calendar year).   1) Dynamic Gold 2) Project X 3) AMT 4) Nippon Modus 120 5) LZ

I would have guessed the top 2 just from going to events.   The surprise to me is the AMT at No. 3. But nice work by True Temper to produce 4 of the top 5.

can we get an update on this? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I haven't seen many pros - Nate Lashley uses them.  I think they are more prominent on the LPGA.

I have often been intrigued with the Project LZ shaft, having never hit one. I'm still hitting the Tour Issue DG AMT from the first release. Maybe it's time to get a second set of irons and put these in to try...

The ball speed I got the LZ made fitter look twice, it was that good. They have a really nice snap to them when you flush it. The weight changes with flex like other PX models, so that will be a factor. Overall I find them much easier to swing than standard PX but with a little flatter flight too. They seem to get up and just go. Worth a try, mizuno cart had the most flex options as most OEMs just have the 6.0 which is slightly too much for me, and I swing a 7 iron in the low 80’s. Usually a stiff in about everything but 5.5 felt more consistent for me to put a smooth swing on it, going after it didn’t seem to phase it but I don’t swing extra hard.

Bigjim1022

I love mine in my 785s.  I think it’s important to get fit or at least try them in the head your looking at.  I had them in a set of Ping 210s and while they felt great they ballooned like crazy, distance loss and spin were unreal.  Got fit into a heavier model and different head (785s) and flex (6.5 vs 6.0) and man what a difference.  Easy to swing, ball just jumps and flies high without ballooning but I can hit knockdowns too.  Really great shaft.

Does anyone know how the spin compares to dynamic gold? I’ve heard mizuno shaft optimizer often recommends these along with dynamic gold. I am looking for something similar to DG but with less spin and possibly less weight.

Spin going to depend a lot more on the loft/ iron head you use. Ball will make more of a difference than shaft, too.

If you're trying to modify spin with shaft, you probably won't alter it by more than 50-100rpm with all other factors equal (same ball, same strike location, same iron, same swing speed and so on).

I Preferred the Tour Elevate shafts for that “mid weight” shaft. Lz are good but if your tempo is off I find that your really loose balls left and right more with those mid bend soft flex.

This is an interesting comment because it’s something I’ve suspected too, primarily with the Modus 120 but also the LZ.

Anyone else find this? Or is it just in my imagination.

Need4spd

Interesting. Hard the believe AMT is that popular on tour. I think I’ve seen it maybe once in a WITB.

Separately, in two separate sessions hitting off a mat indoors, I went from Modus 120 X soft stepped once to Accra iSteel 125 also soft stepped. My 7i spin dropped dramatically. I admit I was surprised. Was spinning it in excess of 7K with Modus but only 6,500ish at most with Accra.

Project X LZ Review – Is This Popular Shaft Worth A Try?

If you’re considering getting a new shaft, this Project X LZ review will help you make an informed decision. True Temper is one of the leading manufacturers of golf shafts and is used by professional golfers on all major tours. Project X shafts are one range of shafts within their stable. So, is the Project X LZ shaft worth a shot?

The Project X LZ is a great iron shaft that delivers a smooth and stable feel on your swings and shots. It’s ideal for golfers looking to improve their performance with a smooth feel to their shaft.

The Project X standard shaft is one of the most popular shafts on Tour and in high-swing speed players’ bags. With the introduction of the Loading Zone technology, Project X offers the precision and advantages of Project X standard shaft to a larger player base. These shafts are available in chrome and blackout finish.

You’ll explore my Project X LZ iron shaft review in this article, so keep reading!

Who They’re Best For?

Why you should trust us, how we reviewed these products, design and technology, specifications, performance, 1. project x standard shaft, 2. kbs tour shaft, 3. n.s. modus 3 shaft, is project x lz stiffer than project x, are project x lz shafts good for wedges, which project x shaft is best, related articles, project x lz review: overview.

Project X New LZ Steel Iron Shafts Set (Choose Flex and Quantity) (7PC Set (4-PW), 6.0)

  • Reinforced tip and butt sections offer ultimate stability.
  • The thinner midsection promotes mid-launch trajectory and gives a signature smooth feel.
  • A less demanding profile makes it more player-friendly.
  • Loading Zone technology provides a 7% increase in energy transfer for longer shots.
  • The thinner midsection allows LZ shafts to feel smooth without a decrease in performance.
  • Not ideal for high swing speed players as it may launch the golf ball too high.
  • No ultra-light shaft option available in the range.
  • One of the most expensive iron and wedge shafts available.

True Temper completely handcrafted the Project X LZ shafts and put in detailed effort for these shafts. Here are some of the various shaft flexes you can choose from:

  • Project X LZ 5.0
  • Project X LZ 5.5
  • Project X LZ 6.0
  • Project X LZ 6.5

Further in this article, I’ll review these shafts on various factors such as their design and technology, performance, and overall.

The Project X LZ shaft felt really smooth compared to most golf shafts . I could feel the constant stiffness of the shaft as soon as I tried it out.

I’ve got an average swing speed, and I realized how steady the shaft was throughout my swings. True Temper put effort into their new Leading Zone technology, and I could feel the difference in the energy transfer they advertise.

If you’re a beginner-intermediate golfer and want to try new shafts that’ll give you a smooth feel and improve your swing, I’d recommend giving the Project X LZ shaft a shot.

This shaft is surprisingly great for golfers with slow to medium swing speeds because of the increased energy transfer.

Our team spends thousands of hours trying out and researching golf equipment to help you take your game to the next level. Here’s our product review process .

We can bring these reviews to you through the small commissions we earn if you buy through the links below.

Golfspan only shares equipment and brands we trust.

As a full-time golfer and a part-time content writer, I thoroughly researched and evaluated the Project X LZ shaft. Then an editor reviewed and fact-checked the list.

The information you get in this article is up-to-date because we conduct regular content audits to update and revise our reviews to ensure you receive the latest information.

To review these irons, I considered these criteria:

  • Cost: The Project X LZ shaft is a popular product designed by True Temper. Considering the prices of its competitors, I believe the price of Project X LZ shaft is completely justified. These high-quality shafts aren’t overpriced nor made cheap.
  • Feel: After playing with a couple of other shafts and comparing them with the Project X LZ shaft, I’ve concluded that these deliver a stable and consistent feel throughout your swing.
  • Specs: Every minor detail in golf can make a difference. And that’s why I considered the unique specifications of the Project X LZ shaft t while conducting my review.

Project X LZ Review: Features & Benefits

The iron shaft adds innovative technology to True Temper’s much-admired stable of steel iron shafts. If you’re unfamiliar with what shaft material you need, you can learn more about steel shafts and graphite shafts here .

The Project X LZ combines the benefits of premium materials into an innovative design to couple responsiveness and feels into a stable iron shaft. Learn more about what driver shafts are and how they differ from iron shafts.

Project X LZ (Loading Zone) features True Temper’s proprietary technology, specifically positioned to maximize shaft load for greater energy transfer and increased ball speed .

True Temper claims a 7% increase in energy transfer. This is achieved by thinning out the mid-section walls for increased flexibility to produce maximum shaft load during the downswing for greater energy transfer.

By keeping the butt and tip sections reinforced, it assists in increased stability and control. The variable wall thickness creates a unique design, profile, and feel visible in the immediate tapered steps from the grip through the midsection of the shaft.

A reduction in the stiffness of the mid-section, Project X LZ iron shafts are designed to boost speed and spin properties accordingly through each flex in the range.

Innovative design principles offer Project X LZ shafts all the playing benefits of the Project X standard shaft with the enhanced launch and feel, especially at slower swing speeds.

Four models in the Project X LZ shafts are based on their unique weight and flex profile. A number is used to delineate the increase in stiffness.

All shafts in the range measure between 36.5 and 40 inches, with a tip diameter of 0.355 inches and a butt diameter of 0.600 inches, and produce a mid-flight launch trajectory.

I’ll first start with a concise Project X LZ 5.0 review . The 5.0 Project X LZ Steel shafts are available in regular flex, weighing 110g.

Next up, we have the Project X LZ 5.5 review . For a stiffer and heavier option, the 5.5 Project X LZ Steel shafts are available in regular plus flex, weighing in at 115g. The Project X LZ 5.5 specs suit golfers who aren’t exactly beginners but are not skilled.

For the brief Project X LZ 6.0 review , you have a shaft in stiff flex weighing 120g. Project X LZ 6.0 swing speed can be slightly higher than the Project X LZ 5.5 swing speed because of the added weight and stiff flex, which activates different muscle groups.

The final option is the Project X LZ 6.5 shaft which is available in extra-stiff flex weighing in at 125g. This is the heaviest option with the most stiffness you can find. The 6.5 shaft would suit more skilled golfers as this is less forgiving than other options. Get more information on What Shaft Flex 6.5 Means .

Check out the Project X LZ shaft fitting guide to get the shafts for your game. You’ll be asked a couple of questions about your game, and your answers will help determine the optimal shaft for you.

The standard Project X shaft has a uniform stiffness profile throughout the entire shaft that creates a sturdy and consistent feel.

Loading Zone technology redeploys the weight and stiffness of the shaft to the butt and tip for enhanced stability and a signature smooth feel.

A firmer butt and tip section retain some of the stiffness of the Project X standard, but the LZ provides an overall crisp and active.

The backswing retains the stable and firm feel of the standard version.

It is in the downswing where you will feel the biggest difference. You can feel a precise kick and snap with the LZ compared to other PX shafts.

You can feel much more of a kick with the LZ than if you are looking for the performance advantages of Project X with a smooth feel, the LZ is the shaft for you.

The softer feel of the Project X LZ will improve your wedge play if you want a softer feel than the Project X Standard offers.

Designed to be a mid-launch iron shaft , it performs well against the design platform.

Besides, the smooth feel created by the LZ technology translates into enhanced performance and playability.  It will empower you to better shape your shots with more control, thus broadening the selection you can call upon under various circumstances.

The additional kick you get on the downswing through impact will keep the ball trajectory low without loss in the distance.

Alternatives

Here are a few of the best golf iron shafts to choose from, which are as good as the Project X LZ or launched as their competitors.

Project X Rifle 6.5 3-PW Steel Iron Shafts .370 Parallel Tip - Set of 8 Shafts (Non-Flighted)

Project X is the original shaft and a trusted brand name to the top professional golfers requiring a low penetrating ball flight ideal for high swing speed.

It produces a rifle shaft that the steel is smooth from top to bottom and has no steps providing you with precision, accuracy, and distance control.

KBS New Tour Steel Iron Shafts Stiff Flex 3-PW .355 Taper

The KBS Tour is the signature shaft from the KBS brand and is available in various weight options.

This shaft is aimed at golfers that require shot versatility and a high launch trajectory. The trajectory is much higher than that of Project X LZ.

Shafts are available in a variety of weights and flex

  • Tour (110g for regular, 115g for R+, 120g for stiff, 125g for S+, and 130g for X-stiff)
  • Tour V (100g for regular, 110g for stiff, and 120g for X-stiff)
  • Tour 80 (100g for regular and stiff flex),
  • Tour 90 (95g for regular flex and 102g for stiff flex)
  • Tour 105 (105g for regular, 110g for stiff, and 115g for X-stiff)

Tip diameter options are either 0.355 or 0.370. The .370 Parallel Shaft is a single-length shaft that will be tip and butt trimmed to your required length, although this can change how the shaft will play.

KBS Tour is made to be one of the smoothest shafts for irons and wedges to deliver a signature soft feel and increased responsiveness.

Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 Tour 4-PW Set (Select Weight and Flex) by GRIPS4LESS - 7 SHAFTS Total (Tour 105, Regular)

The Modus 3 is Nippon’s most complete golf shaft line-up using weight and bend profiles to deliver three ranges of golf shafts for each golf swing style and provides enhanced control over trajectory, distance, and direction.

The three key areas that Nippon aimed at excelling in are:

  • Desired trajectory.
  • Accurate distance.
  • Tight dispersion.

This was achieved through a high tip rigidity design that steadies the tip through impact, reducing unwanted spin, low mid-section rigidity to control shaft flex for control at any swing speed, and low butt rigidity to improve tempo for a comfortable and smoother feeling on impact.

Shafts are available in a variety of weights (105g, 120g, 125g, and 130g) and flex options (R, S, X, TX)

All shafts in the range measure between 37 and 41 inches in length, with a tip diameter of 0.355 inches and a butt diameter of 0.600 inches.

The Project X LZ shaft is stiffer than the Project X shaft. You can find various options in the X LZ category ranging from 5.0 (regular flex) to 6.5 (extra-stiff flex). A stiffer shaft is best suited for low-handicappers as they deliver more swing speeds and are generally less forgiving.

Project X LZ shafts aren’t the best options for wedges. The LZ are iron shafts that are ideal for PW to 4-Iron. Check out the Project X Wedge shafts  specifically designed for Wedges.

The Project X New LZ steel iron shaft is one of True Temper’s best Project X shafts. However, the ideal shaft can differ for every golfer depending on their handicap, experience, and swing speed. Choosing the right shaft for yourself is essential to reap the maximum benefits.

Final Thoughts

Project X shafts are well-known across the globe and used on all professional tours.

Introducing the Project X LZ technology made the shaft more accessible to a wider range of golfers that do not have a fast wing speed like professional golfers.

Variable wall thickness creates an extra kick at compact for a mid-launch trajectory without sacrificing stability.

Although this is the closest you will come to a universal shaft, it is highly recommended that you conduct proper testing to ensure that the shaft is suited to your swing. I hope this Project X LZ shaft review has helped you understand the shaft better so you can make an informed decision.

Project X has been incredibly successful in making iron shafts for the game’s best players and very strong swingers. To their own admission, however, the standard Project X iron and wedge shaft does not fit the need of most amateur golfers. Enter Project X LZ. The Project X LZ maintains all the playing benefits of the standard shaft but gives players easier launch and an improved feel, especially at slower swing speeds . Players that have always loved the performance of Project X but felt they had to work too hard to play them consistently have a great new option in the Project X LZ. Loading Zone Technology redistributes the weight of the shaft for ultimate stability and a signature smooth feel. I play Project X shafts in my irons and love the performance benefits of Project X’s design. The LZ shaft is perfect for players that want similar performance but do not have tour-level swing speeds. Overall, I felt immediately comfortable with the LZ shafts and loved the feeling I was receiving with my 7 iron. Through age or diminishing swing speeds, I will have no problem transitioning into this incredible engineering accomplishment. LZ combines the benefits of premium materials into a brand new design that gave Project X the ability to couple responsiveness and feel into an ultra-stable iron shaft. Players that are looking for the performance advantages of Project X with a smooth feel will love the Project X LZ. LZ also makes a great option for players looking to transition their wedge shafts into something slightly softer, especially if they are playing Project X standard shafts in their irons.

  • The thinner midsection allows LZ shafts to feel smooth without a decrease in performance.

  • Project X LZ is one of the most expensive iron and wedge shafts available and typically carries an upcharge.

Project X LZ shafts are available in four different models. Each model is unique in its weight and flex profile. The Project X flex system uses number that represent increasing stiffness. The lightest and softest flex LZ shafts come standard in 110-grams and 5.0 or regular flex. Moving into stiff flex, the 5.5 LZ shafts weigh 115-grams. Stiff+ and extra-stiff models are offered in weights of 120- and 125-grams respectively with 6.0 and 6.5 flexes.

The Project X LZ offers players a compliment to the existing Project X design with increased feel and responsiveness. Project X LZ is perfect for the player looking for maximum stability and a smooth feel. The one discomfort golfers have with the standard Project X shaft is the rigid feel that is associated with these high-performance shafts, the new LZ eliminates that disgruntlement and delivers a golf shaft that fits almost any type of golfer.

Project X LZ Tour Graphite Iron Shaft Review

By russ ryden, a golf digest america’s 100 best clubfitter fit2score, dallas fort worth, texas.

ttpxlzgimage

The Project X Loading Zone steel shaft is getting a lot of tour play. Our tester with a 117 mph driver speed has made the Project X LZ 6.5 his gamer in his irons. Now the same brand name is on a 90 gram carbon fiber shaft for those of us with more modest swing speeds. I first noticed the shaft when my 2017 Mizuno fitting cart update arrived. This year’s 90g shaft from Mizuno is the Project X Tour LZ in a 5.0 and 6.0 flex.

Project X LZ Iron Shaft Review

Project x lz iron shafts.

The Project X LZ iron shaft features a new technology to their already-acclaimed stable of steel iron shafts.  That technology is the Loading Zone.  By reducing the mid-section’s stiffness while the butt and tip section remain “robust,” the LZ iron shafts are designed to maximize speed and spin properties accordingly through each flex .  If you’re a fan of the signature Project X feel, but like a little added punch, you may want to read on.

Project X LZ 7

How Does it Feel?

By creating this “Loading Zone,” the Project X LZ iron shafts are naturally going to have a distinct feel.  There’s a certain firmness created by the stiffer butt and tip sections, but the overall feel of the shaft is crisp and active .  The key is that the “active” feel is very precise.  This was achieved through the micro steps in the mid section which give the shaft more flex in this specific spot.  Through the backswing, the LZ feels very stable and firm.  Coming into impact, you can feel the load and the impact has a great snap to it.  The release isn’t a massive release, but rather a very smooth and precise kick.

In terms of feel in the hands and response, I don’t think any other shaft in the Project X barn tops the LZ.  The LZ has a very clean feel and perfect response throughout the set .  In my personal opinion, the LZ has a great feel for a wide range of golfers .

Project X LZ 4

On-Course Performance

The Project X LZ is the most “one-size-fits-all” shaft of the entire Project X lineup.  As mentioned earlier, the feel is very smooth but you get a nice pop with it.  That nice mid-shaft kick in the LZ should give you a nice penetrating mid-trajectory flight.   While the stock flight is “medium,” the LZ is easy to manipulate.  Should you need to flight one low or high, right or left, the LZ has that shot.  Furthermore, I’d say those shots are easy to hit with the LZ.  That says a lot.  If you’ve ever played an iron shaft that’s the polar opposite, you know what that constant struggle feels like, and that’s the last thing you need to score well.

Project X LZ 8

Final Thoughts – Project X LZ

Versatility is what makes the Project X LZ so appealing – especially if you’re a Project X fan.  There are a lot of familiar Project X characteristics in the LZ, but I don’t believe any shaft in the lineup has the LZ’s versatility along with its ease of use.  Good feel and easy kick with a good flight are about all you can ask for in an iron shaft.  As always, make sure you do your proper testing to make sure this shaft is right for you.

i have the mizuno hot metal irons, with the project x graphite lz 90 gr stiff shafts ! Will I have a tuff time getting the ball up because of the stiff shaft & mid kick ? i have about a 90 mph clubhead speed !

' src=

You’re asking to compare the steel to the graphite iron shafts. Totally different animals.

Also, difficulty getting the ball in the air isn’t so much just due to your swing speed, the flex, or kick point. It’s how your specific swing reponds to each of those elements. Some people could have the stiffest, lowest-launching shaft with slow swing speeds and still hit the ball a mile high.

I guess I’d also ask if you have the clubs with the shaft in them already, how are you hitting them? Or have you not hit them yet?

' src=

Hi there, spent an afternoon in a PGA Superstore testing the Callaway Rogue Irons with the LZ regular 105 5.5 shaft. Felt nice, but not wanting to spend the $$ from a retail shop I was wondering what your thoughts were in the following three options:

KBS Tour V KBS V90 KBS Max

My ball speed is optimally 109. I’m sure these are all completely different, but I feel I’ve run the patience of the store clerk. 🙂

While I hate blind recommendations like this, I would immediately take the Tour V off that list. It doesn’t fit the profile you’re looking for.

Neither of the remaining KBS shafts is really similar to the LZ either. My honest opinion, and what I would do – pony up for the LZ if they’re truly the best fit for you. Clubs are investment so you might as well do it right.

' src=

At this time I’m playing Callaway H2Hot irons with the rifle flighted 5.5 shafts, I switched fro the flighted 6.0 last year. What LZ shaft would you recommend. My 150 club is my 9 iron

That’s not enough data to really make any type of recommendation. You truly need to hit the club/shaft and see what your flights and dispersion are. It’s not an apples to apples comparison that you’re trying to make.

' src=

I have had two fitters warm me about the TT XP 95, said they were bending and breaking. I am thinking the LZ 105 would be a good choice. Have you had any experience with the XP

I don’t have any real extended experience with that shaft because it just isn’t remotely a good fit for me, but I’d the LZ will play a little tighter and firmer.

' src=

I have the opportunity to buy a set of JPX 919 HM irons from a friend of a friend of a friend. Problem is, this person is a thousand miles away so while Ive hit the HMs before (and liked them) I havent hit THESE specific ones. My issue is they have the PX LZ 90 5.0 shafts in them. I cant seem to find consistent info online about them. The set I just sold had KBS Tour 90 R flex in them and I got on pretty well with them. Driver SS is 97-100 and 7 iron SS is 78-80 (unless I really try to get after one). Where does the 5.0 fall w/r/t stiffness? I’ve seen some reviews that make me think they’ll be good, others make me worry my “good deal” will evaporate in $200 for re-shafting and re-gripping. Thanks for all your work here, always unbiansed and informative!

I’m sort of lost in this, but if you’re asking what 5.0 means, it’s a lighter flex along the lines of senior/junior/ladies. I can’t tell you how you’ll hit this shaft vs the other one. Only you can by testing. You may have a totally different physical response to it than we did here. I also haven’t tested the low in the flex ratings so would be a shot in the dark.

' src=

im thinking about buying some pzg irons with project x lz 6.5 shafts my swing speed is probably high 80;s to mid 90’s not are these shafts to firm for me. Thanks

No way to really answer without seeing your flight data and whatnot, but my guy would tell me that 6.5 is likely to stiff if your driver swing speed is high 80s to low 90s.

' src=

Swing speed 7 iron average 83mph. I’ve got Aerotech steel fibre i95 stiff in Titleist CB716. Now I’ve made a reserve on Titleist T100 with Project x lz 5.0 regular 110g. Do you reckon I’m good to go?

I mean, you’re really comparing apples to oranges, right? Two very different shafts, different weights and flexes, different club heads. Really, it comes down to how your swing and hands respond to the combinations, not so much what your swing speed is, etc. Swing speed only plays a certain amount of a role in the whole scheme of things.

' src=

My 7iron(95g shaft,SW c9) swing speed is 89mph. My driver swing speed is 110mph on SW D3.3. Should I change my iron sw to D3 by replacing with PX Lz6.0 and adjusting club head weight in order to achieve faster SS?

Swingweight is more about balance and feel, not so much about swing speed. Overall shaft and club weight can play a role in swing speeds, but the decision you’re trying to make isn’t as simple as considering the information you presented. As always, it’s best to get a proper fitting and find the optimal performance. Blind adjustments could lead to more swing speed, but you may struggle to launch the ball and you can’t get enough carry so you lose distance. OR maybe you actually lose speed because the club feels too heavy for you and you can’t lug it around. There’s no way to blindly guess that.

' src=

Is the kick point in the LZ stiff similar to the modus 120 stiff.

I’d say both are in the area of a “mid” kick point but won’t necessarily feel identical.

' src=

Hi Bill! I currently game KBS Tour 120s and really Like the feel. About to shop some new irons and, with the KBS delays, I was wondering if these LZ shafts in 6.0 will have a similar feel?

This is answer is pretty subjective, but I don’t think they feel the same. Pretty apples to oranges. KBS Tour has sort of a signature feel as do Project X shafts, and they really don’t feel alike. The LZ is going to have more of that signature Project X feel.

' src=

HI Bill, upgrading my AP3s to possibly t100s. I have AMT Black in my AP3s, I am right around high 80s in speed with a steep swing and i hit the ball really high. Hit my 7 iron 155ish, mostly carry. I demo’d the t100s with the AMT black and red, and was really hitting it high. Do you think a 5.5 LZ might lower that a bit? I am thinking the AMT and my swing hit it so high, I might be losing some distance. I am not too keen on the 6.0 as it is 120g. I don’t like light clubs, but heavy is not keen either. Or, other than flex, would I even notice the difference in weight 5.5 vs 6.0. Any thoughts would help.

Really no way to tell from just the information provided to be honest. The only way you’ll really know is to test. AMT Black really shouldn’t produce a high launch on its own, so that’s likely something with your swing.

As far as being able to tell the difference between 5.5 and 6.0, again, I wouldn’t really be able to tell you. That “sense of feel” is fairly subjective and will vary from player to player. Think about the stories of how Tiger Woods can sense the slightest air bubble in the tape underneath his grips. Same thing with a lot of shaft weighting. What I might REALLY notice in two different shaft weights, you might not realize a difference at all. Then when you factor in swingweight differences and the sense of feel, that introduces a whole new element.

' src=

I currently play the Project X 6.0 in Mizuno JPX900 Hot Metal irons, but I recently got fitted for Srixon ZX5 irons. The fitters top 4 shafts were KBS Tour, the LZ 6.0 , Dynamic Gold S300, and the standard Project X 6.0. He did the shafts blind bit I could tell the difference in all 3 shafts I tried. I cant remember which was which, but with the KBS and S300 both felt too heavy; one overall heavy the other heavy in the head; whereas the LZ felt balanced and well weighted. The LZ definitely felt effortless to swing and created the most consistent strikes. I would definitely recommend paying the money for a fitting as it also identified I needed 2 degrees upright. The other component was I was fitted with the ball most suitable for me to use, which was the Srixon Z Star; the fitted identified I need more spin.

I have a chance to get a MP20 HMB 3I but it comes with a project X LZ 6.0 shaft. I currently game KBS tour stiff. Would that be too much to adjust to to use the HMB as a UI/DI with that shaft? Of course then I would ditch my 3H and PXG DI if it works out. Has anyone hit both?

They are not poles apart in terms of weight and flex, but depending on how you swing and load the shaft the results may be slightly different in launch and spin. The LZ has a stiffer tip section and slightly stiffer butt - the mid sections are very similar. The LZ would give a tad lower launch and spin, but as stated it would depend on how you load and release the shaft.

Not sure if I would personally ditch the 3H in favour of the HMB though - the hybrid would probably offer greater forgiveness, probably greater distance and more versatility.

The age old advice is try before you buy.

I guess I should just reshaft my pxg with KBS tour then and see how that goes. $34 cheaper than $115

According to Titleist’s measurements, KBS Tour in S flex is stiffer across the board than the LZ 6.0.

https://www.titleist.com/fitting/golf-club-fitting/golf-shafts

image.png.98ff42aac400fa66ac2fb75861eb0d78.png

Like I said - it depends on how you load the shaft. The KBS Tour EI curve in red compared to the PX LZ in blue. (KBS Tour V in brown for comparison).

It also depends on how Titleist are measuring their shafts - the KBS Tour is famously incrementally stiffer along it's length as the EI curve demonstrates quite nicely with a rather flat linear style curve. If you measure from mid point to the tip, it will be stiffer overall as Titleist suggest. The PX LZ is much stiffer initially in the tip but then dips before flattening out in the middle - it may well be measured at a lower cpm because of this contrast from tip to mid. Again, the same story plays out in the mid to butt measurement as it is stiffer it an increase towards the butt - however again the contrast could be measured as lower in cpm. Think of two stiff sections connected by a more flexible middle (like the Nunchuck). The KBS Tour on the other hand has a more lateral flex increase and flatter EI curve, meaning the difference in measured tip to mid, and mid to butt sections appear to measure stiffer in cpm. Overall butt frequency will measure as stiffer too.

But it how the shaft  profile  plays that makes the difference. Smooth swingers with a smooth transition, but with an early release will see lower flight and spin than someone with a later release with the PX LZ. Harder transitions will be more thankful of the butt and tip stiffness of PX LZ in terms of launch and spin control for the same release. It all depends on the load and release how the shaft reacts.

Titleists graphic probably covers how average joe would expect to see it play on paper, but even they qualify it with a caveat to get fitted. You can't take everything on paper as face value if you haven't tried it for yourself. The specs are really too close to call it one way or another on overall performance. This is a classic example of this.

This is great color, thanks for sharing. I don’t know that anything will kick my $ tapers out of the bag any time soon but it’s always cool to learn about comparisons across brands/lines that go deeper than said brands’ 2 sentence descriptions.

:titelist-small:

I got fitted for both during an iron fitting. Ended up with the KBS S-taper because the combo with the mizuno HM heads produced better results with my swing. Could have gone with the LZ's and not much issue though.

Thanks everyone. Interesting discussion. I didn’t go with the HMB. I will say I love my KBS. It was between that and Nippon modus3 120s during my fitting. Better feel with nippon, better results with KBS. Never tried the LZ but have HZRDUS yellow in my 3w.

I just tried the LZ in a Ping i500 head and it was so smooth... unfortunately Sub 70's irons don't compute with them.  The KBS tour 120 was second on the performance list for me.  I'm guessing that is the closest comp to the LZ's.  I currently have the Tour 105's but they spin too much and launch too high for me.

For me, the KBS Tour was lower launching than the PX LZ.  The linear feel is a correct description of the Tour.  The PX LZ definitely has a more active midsection and required a smoother transition.

When we built our test clubs, we found that the 5.0 plays a little soft so you would need to hard-step (put the 5 iron shaft in the 4 iron) in order to get close to the 5.o flex.  On the other hand, the 6.0 plays pretty true to flex.  Depending upon the length and desired swing weight, we should be able to build a wide range of flex, length, and swing weight options from a mid range Senior flex (4.0) to a high end stiff flex (6.3).

Dynamic testing the LZ shafts is always a treat and the LZ Tour 90 did not disappoint.  Our testers were impressed with the smooth yet explosive feel of the shaft through impact.  Again, just like the LZ Steel, we saw incremental increases in smash factor (faster ball speed and more distance) with the LZ Tour 90 against The UST Recoil, SteelFiber i95 and OBAN i83.

Launch and spin are in the mid range, which is great for a graphite shaft of that weight.   We would typically see that shaft weight generate a little higher launch and spin so this will be a great shaft for the player switching from steel to graphite but worried about hitting a graphite shaft too high, or bringing down the ball flight from a high-launching light weight shaft.

This shaft is only available through True Temper authorized Performance Fitting Centers like D’Lance Golf Performance Center.

Just like all shafts, the proof is in matching the weight, flex and launch conditions to the individual golfer’s swing profile and iron head.  Looking forward to  putting this exciting new shaft in play!

KBS Tour Vs Project X LZ Shaft Comparison Overview

KBS Tour Vs Project X LZ Shaft

See how the Project X LZ compares to the famed KBS Tour shaft in the following comparison.

KBS Tour Shaft Overview

project x lz on tour

“The KBS Tour shaft comes in regular, regular+, stiff, stiff+ and extra stiff flex. There are 110g, 115g, 120g, 125g and 130g options.”

The KBS Tour shaft is one of the smoothest-feeling heavy-weight shafts I’ve ever tested.

Even on bad mis-hits, the shaft absorbed nearly all the shock. The transition is stable even when you swing outside yourself.

The launch is low but can be worked to mid territory. You can feel the transition and release in the shaft but all the action is confined to the center – allowing for great club head stability.

Project X LZ Shaft Overview

“This shaft comes in regular, regular+, stiff and extra stiff flex with 110g, 115g, 120 and 125g options.”

You don’t have to work so hard to activate this shaft compared to the KBS Tour.

While there  is a definite sense of acceleration through the ball, it remains as stable as the KBS Tour.

“The main difference is that there’s just a bit more life and kick in the Project X LZ shaft. But both are incredibly stable and accurate.”

KBS Tour First Impressions

project x lz on tour

“The KBS Tour shaft gave me the confidence to fire at will.”

Even on my most aggressive swings, I got the feeling that this was essentially a point-and-shoot shaft.

Project X LZ First Impressions

Project X LZ Shaft2

We were first impressed by the fact that this is a lively shaft that still manages to be accurate.

The activity of this shaft can be felt on almost every kind of swing; but the dispersion remains consistently tight – a very impressive combination.

Key Features & Performance

Project X says they used something called “loading zone technology” for this shaft.

We’re not sure exactly what that technology actually is but we do know that the Project X LZ delivers on promises of smooth feel. You get the classic Project X feel in a shaft that is much more active.

Project X LZ Irons Review

Like the Project X IO shafts, the Project X LZ will help you attack the pin more aggressively.

Our testers were able to stick the green consistently on long par 4’s with these shafts.

Project X LZ Wedges Review

The ability to shape your shot at will really comes through in the wedges.

The Project X LZ maintains a smooth feel from tight lies and offers plenty of spin to hold fast greens.

KBS Tour Pros & Cons

  • Extremely stable
  • Very tight dispersion
  • Takes strong loads very well
  • Stepped design

Project X LZ Pros & Cons

  • Comes in a blackout finish
  • Tight dispersion
  • Controllable launch
  • Good feedback
  • Good distance on pure strikes
  • Sometimes there was too much feedback

Who Should Buy the KBS Tour?

Project X Steel Shafts for Irons

Project X is now also involved in the market for wood and driver shafts. However, this shaft became famous for its unique "rifle design" without the usual steps. Project X played a major role on the Tour from the very beginning with its basic low launch, low spin profile. Players like Rory McIlroy do not think about changing the shaft.

Meanwhile Project X is part of "True Temper", but has not lost any of its original concept. Over the years, more shafts have been added to the original Project X, most notably the Project X LZ, which is also very popular on Tour. But also off the Tour, Project X wants to continue with new shaft concepts such as the Project X IO or the Catalyst, a graphite shaft with the characteristics of steel shafts.

project x lz on tour

Project X Rifle

This shaft is constructed without steps and therefore has a unique design. However, this is not only an advantage in terms of design but also in terms of flex distribution and energy transfer. And this without having a negative influence on control. This stepless construction makes the tip very stiff and therefore provides more precision with optimal control of trajectory and spin.

The bend profile of the Project X is quite interesting and roughly comparable to the Nippon Modus 3 120 . The end of the grip is relatively soft and becomes stiffer as the grip progresses, in the middle very soft and in the tipp stiffer again. Exactly this stiff tip is decisive for the profile with low spin and low trajectory.

Project X LS

The Project X LS stands for low spin and further enhances the "low spin characteristic". The LS was just released in 2020 and has a brushed finish. Like the Project X Rifle it has no steps. The LS is even softer in the grip area than the Project X rifle. This makes it possible to make the other parts of the shaft even stiffer. Therefore the Project X LS is really only designed for very athletic players who swing very aggressively. The difference to the Project X rifle though is marginal and probably only noticeable for extremely good players.

Project X IO

This shaft concept is already known from the Dynamic Gold AMT shaft , where the shafts for longer irons are becoming lighter and lighter. Basically, we believe this concept is only useful for players who really struggle to launch the ball with long irons.

Project X LZ

The Loading Zone Technology makes this shaft unique and gives it its name: LZ. It enables a 7% greater transfer of energy to the ball and therefore ensures greater distances. This technology is not only visible in the club, but can also be seen in the conical steps from the grip through the middle section of the Project X LZ.

As far as the profile is concerned, the Project X LZ differs significantly from the Project X Rifle and is, for example, an alternative to the Nippon Modus 120. However, the profile of the LZ is much more pronounced than the Modus, namely very stiff in the lower part of the grip, very soft in the middle and again a stiff tip - the latter is the prerequisite for an overall low launch with little spin.

The stiffness of the shaft should not be underestimated and the LZ is even stiffer than the Project X rifle. That's why the Project X LZ in 7.0 is only available as a tour version and is played by Tommy Fleetwood, for example. For us normal mortals this variant is not available, but Project X 7.0 is.

Project X vs. Project X LZ - Our Review

When comparing the data, it quickly becomes apparent that the Project X LZ is a little stiffer than the Project X of the same rank. This means that a Project X 6.0 is about as stiff as the Project X LZ 5.5 - but also a little lighter. So if you generally tend towards lighter but stiffer, you should have found a candidate in the Project X LZ.

However, the differences are not dramatic. For our test, we nevertheless compared Project X 6.0 with Project X LZ 5.5 because these shafts have practically the same stiffness.

The results are as follows:

project x lz on tour

In terms of launch and spin, we would not find any differences based on this test. The Project X LZ shows a little more spin, but this is mainly due to the strike pattern. It makes no sense to classify one of the shafts with a higher launch or more spin. The big difference is in the profile and this is particularly evident in the transition. Our player got along much better with the Project X with its relatively aggressive transition from backswing to downswing. This is also reflected in the result and especially in the outliers that did not make it into our analysis. Our test player noticed relatively early on that the aggressive transition gets him into trouble more easily - which can also be seen directly in the dispersion. A large part of the balls were either slightly blocked or slightly closed. A typically poor strike pattern for good players who get to the ball from the inside. The comparison of Project X and Project X LZ is an example of how individual shafts can be. Another player might have achieved exactly the opposite result.

Various aspects of golf club shafts affect their performance, and they must be considered carefully. Project X Vs. Project X LZ iron shafts: which one is better? This guide will help you determine which golf shaft will work best for you. Don’t wait more- scroll down below.

Project X Vs Project X LZ Iron Shafts

Quick Comparison: Project X Vs. Project X LZ Iron Shafts

Here are some of the key differences between Projects X and Project X LZ. Read them carefully because your performance relies a lot on iron shafts.

Project X Iron Shafts

Project X ordinary shafts remain one of the famous wedge and iron shafts available today. Project X is a popular choice among players who want to improve stability and control by their iron shaft.

When swinging fast or being aggressive, players with iron shafts can assist in getting the most out of their complete set.

The Project X LZ Iron Shafts

LZ (Loading Zone) offers the highest feel and performance in the Project X lineup and is designed for a broader audience of golfers. LZ iron shafts are almost like they combined the best features of Project X and PXi, added a little more magic dust, and created something incredible.

Differences Between Project X and Project X LZ Iron Shafts

Design and technology.

Many players prefer the standard Project X shaft. Stepless shafts provide golfers with more steady and reduced launches than traditional shafts. In regards to improving dispersion and dialing in precise shots, Project X is excellent.

The Project X LZ is a stable iron shaft that combines an extra feel and premium materials. True Temper’s Project X LZ (Loading Zone) combines proprietary technology to increase shaft load and increase ball speed.

Performance

Low launch and low spin are claimed for the Project X irons. A stable tip on the Project X shaft is the secret to the ball’s low, piercing flight with no spin. It’s the perfect tool for players looking to improve their approach shots and control their dispersion.

A mid-launch iron shaft like Project X LZ performs well against the design platform. Additionally, the LZ technology creates a smooth feel that enhances performance and playability. The impact will add a kick to your downswing that keeps the ball trajectory low without compromising distance.

Woods, Hybrids, and Irons are all available for Project X Shafts. These fantastic shafts can be customized to fit your golf gear. In order to maximize your golf game’s distance and accuracy, choosing the right golf shaft is crucial.

Steel iron shafts from True Temper now have the best iron shaft to add to their stable of innovative technology. The Project X LZ is perfect for players who are seeking performance advantages with a smooth feel.

Project X steel iron shafts are renowned for their strength and quality. Regardless of whether the swing is perfect or not, it will produce an incredible amount of power. As a result, you will look and feel like one of the best players in the world with these shafts.

Throughout Project X, strive to produce shafts that are as stable as possible while providing the best distance control.

The Project X LZ Steel Iron is the shaft for you if you want maximum distance in your swings without sacrificing control or stability.

The tip and grip sections are notably stiffer. By increasing the stiffness of the ball, more energy can be created and delivered to it. As a result, you are able to control ball distance better.

Project X Vs. Project X LZ Iron Shafts: Length

True Temper’s acclaimed steel iron shafts receive a technological boost with the iron shaft. Project X and Project X LZ Iron Shafts are pretty similar but both have their own superiority.

Degree Of Loft: Project X Vs. Project X LZ Iron Shafts

Both 2 iron lofts are similar but Project X LZ’s 3 iron to 9 iron loft is quite higher than Project X shaft. Below you will find out the loft degrees for each iron and It’ll be easy to understand any.

“Forgiveness” What Is In Golf?

The term “forgiving” refers to a club that gives reasonable distance and accuracy on poorly struck shots. With perimeter weighting and big striking surfaces, they’re designed for ordinary and beginning players. Whenever the ball is struck with the sweet spot of any club, the ball will reach its greatest range.

Many of these features result in a golf club offering a high level of forgiveness. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a seasoned golfer; the best irons, “Project X or Project LZ Iron Shafts,” can take your game to the next level. Certainly, it will make the game more enjoyable for you.

Price Range

On Amazon, Project X Shaft, you can only find $39 to $199. For a Project X Shaft LZ, the minimum and maximum range are $50 to $274.

Project X vs KBS Tour: Comparison

Project X is one of the best in the market, True Sports wished so and the players made it come true.

According to a publication by Golfweek USA Today, a large percentage of golfers make use of the True Temper Steel Shafts in their irons on the PGA Tour.

These models are used by Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and others too, according to Golfweek.

True Temper Sports has an admirable foot in the world of golf today.

For over 70 seventy years, this brand has been in the business of shaft making and has done nothing but soar, the name itself speaks standards.

Being the most trusted brand in golf shafts globally, True Temper strives to keep that trophy in check.

The brand has a warehouse of shaft types to choose from, such as the flagship Dynamic Gold, Project X, AMT, Elevate, Aerotech (for graphite lovers), and Accra shafts made with love for the custom fitters.

Each of these shafts has various types of tweaks from the original model to cater to players with slightly different preferences.

This article discusses the Project X shaft and one of its counterparts, the KBS Tour Shaft.

What to Know About Project X

Project X vs KBS Tour

The project X shafts were designed to provide a stiffer feel and heavy load.

The shaft is ideal for players who don’t like to feel the shaft moving during the swing, as it has minimal deflection. It has a mid-launch low-launch profile with a low spin and fast tempo.

Project X is preferred by strong players who swing strong looking for a stable, penetrating ball.

Project X comes in 5 different flexes: 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0. It also ranks as the second most used shaft after Dynamic Gold.

Compared to the Project X shaft, KBS Tour is soft in the tip but has a thick middle section.

This makes it a lot more different than Project X, which has a stiffer tip and a softer midsection in comparison.

What to Know About KBS Tour

Project X vs KBS Tour

While KBS Tour has a low club head speed, that of Project X is a little bit higher, which also makes a good difference between the two.

KBS Tour might be able to give you a higher launch trajectory as well as a lower spin rate.

The KBS Tour shafts were designed to complement the stoutness of Project X, the shaft has a stiff tip, soft mid-section, and a stiff butt.

It fits better with players who like the Project X profile but find it too stout.

The mid-section allows the shaft to deflect during swing giving it a little bent profile.

The shaft has a mid-launch profile with a medium spin and moderate tempo. KBS Tour is available in four different flex options too.

Project X vs KBS Tour: Which is Better?

Changing golf shafts can make little changes to the stick feel, these little modifications can have an immense effect on golf swings.

The Project X shaft is known and loved for its profile build, but some people really like their shafts being a bit flexible and not too rigid.

Project X LZ became the heeding call to their complaint offering them a shaft that is less stiff and compromising a percentage of the original Project X build.

Project X will be seen flying lower than LZ with less spin and thereby causing lesser dispersion, but this might feel hard to achieve in the hands of a player without much strength and a slow tempo.

The loading zone technology in the LZ was built to compensate for that.

Both products sell for 300+ a set, with little price difference.

Project X is a great product for players seeking pin-point accuracy and if the main and the LZ variant don’t feel just that perfect, Project X has a lot to offer.

  8. Project X LZ Shaft Review

The Project X LZ is billed as a shaft that is easy to launch while still managing to keep the spin down. As you can see from the numbers above, it definitely delivers on that promise. 9. Project X LZ Iron Shaft Review

The Project X LZ is the most "one-size-fits-all" shaft of the entire Project X lineup. As mentioned earlier, the feel is very smooth but you get a nice pop with it. 13. KBS Tour Vs Project X LZ Shaft Comparison Overview

Project X LZ Shaft Overview. "This shaft comes in regular, regular+, stiff and extra stiff flex with 110g, 115g, 120 and 125g options.". You don't have to work so hard to activate this shaft compared to the KBS Tour. While there is a definite sense of acceleration through the ball, it remains as stable as the KBS Tour.

  14. Project X vs. Project X LZ: Which is Better?

The launch is one of the significant differences between both shafts and can be the deciding factor. Project X provides a low launch which controls the ball lower in the air and improves the distance. On the other hand, Project X LZ offers a mid-launch which gives an improved height but decreases the distance.

  15. Project X Steel Shafts: Rifle, LZ, LS and IO
