Visiting Google’s London headquarters

by INTO Study Team · Published August 6, 2014 · Updated May 23, 2017

Tomide, from Nigeria, was lucky enough to win a tour of Google HQ in London! He told us about the day…

outside

When I arrived at the Google headquarters in London, I checked in at the ground floor of the building where the general reception was.

It was an amazing building and I couldn’t wait to explore it. Mr. Harry (Harpreet Sethi, Product Marketing Manager) met me here. He was my host and guide for the day.

It turned out to be where many of the staff watched the champions’ league and the Fifa World Cup.

Afterwards, we sat and discussed engineering and Google.

He told me about himself and his job, which involves endorsing projects of the international and local Google team.

Photo 17-07-2014 12 05 04_Fotor_20140730

He told me that I was on the right path and only the best in the world get to work on their engineering teams.

He also encouraged me to keep working hard in order to get a job in a place like Google.

Lunch was a buffet situated within the Google HQ premises where staff and visitors ate for free.

There were all sorts of dishes, fruits, desserts and snacks.

There were also these really cool fruits called cucumelons, a sort of crossbreed between cucumbers and watermelons, which they grew under white light right in the dining area. Now that’s something!

food

I had pizza, salad and roasted beef for lunch. There were some jellybeans beside the pizza stand, which I sprinkled on my pizza because I thought they were additional toppings. I think everyone should try that sometime. It tasted heavenly.

Harry and I talked about the Google Science Fair , which is global online science and technology for teenagers, and he encouraged me to sign up for it.

I had cakes for dessert and explored the dining room afterwards thinking, all the while, about how fulfilled I’d be to work at Google.

seagulls

After lunch, we continued our tour around the office. There was a wall that had a Brighton sea-front theme, which was really cool and another which was laced with all kinds of motorcycle mirrors. There was a standard gym and a place for massages. At that point, I really wanted to get a massage.

My visit was coming to an end soon and Mr. Harry showed me around some more. We played a little game of ‘whose phone had the best camera quality’, and he emerged victorious.

At the end of the trip, Mr. Harry encouraged me to join a programmers’ society. “It would come in handy,” he said.

I enjoyed every bit of the trip. It was like seeing my life 6 years from now. I went to work the moment I got home, because now I know what I have to do to get where I want to be in the future!

Inside The Quirky Google London Office

google office tour london

The new Google headquarters in London, England occupies half of the Central Saint Giles development at 1 St Giles High Street. The 160,000 sq. ft. interior space has a quirky cutting-edge design by PENSON.

A mix of modern and 70s retro style defines this unique workspace, which features many lounging areas.

The Library has a giant semi-circle white sofa with pillows, and surrounded by inspirational books. A lounging space called Granny’s Flat is furnished with chintzy chairs and fittings.

Meeting rooms with padded walls have a cosy feel. Lounging space with padded bench seats provide a traditional British pub feel.

The eco-conscious interior design also uses a lot of reclaimed or recycled materials.

This is modern British design paying homage to the traditional English look.

Google’s huge new London HQ is a ‘landscraper’ with a rooftop garden

And a swimming pool, and massage rooms, and a running track, and more.

It’s got space for more than 4,000 employees, a rooftop garden with a running track, and has been dubbed a “landscraper” for being as long as a skyscraper is tall. It’s Google’s new London headquarters, the final plans of which were submitted this week to Camden council after years of back-and-forth between the tech giant and architects.

Construction on the “Zone A” development will start in 2018 at a site overlooking London’s King’s Cross railway station. The final design was created by the Bjarke Ingels Group and Heatherwick Studios (previously responsible for the 2012 London Olympic Cauldron and new-look London Routemaster buses) after Google scrapped an earlier set of plans by architects AHMM in 2013.

The interior of the building will be mainly given over to open-plan offices.

According to Architect’s Journal , the entire complex will cost some £1 billion. The main 11-story building will provide some 80,819 square meters of space and stretch across 330 meters of ground, sitting on a “plinth” of shops with ground-floor entrances to the offices interspersed between them. This is intended to create a “varied and open ground plane that can change with time,” according to the submitted plans.

In a statement, designer Thomas Heatherwick said he’d been inspired by the site of the new office, which functions as a hub for much of the city’s transport links.

“The area is a fascinating collision of diverse building types and spaces and I can’t help but love this mix of massive railway stations, roads, canals and other infrastructure all layered up into the most connected point in London,” said Heatherwick. “Influenced by these surroundings, we have treated this new building for Google like a piece of infrastructure too, made from a family of interchangeable elements which ensure that the building and its workspace will stay flexible for years to come.”

The rooftop garden will be perhaps the most impressive feature of Google’s new London HQ.

Inside will be all the amenities you’d expect, like cafes and meeting rooms, as well as a three-lane, 25-meter swimming pool, massage rooms, a “multi-use games area” for spots like basketball and football, and a 210-seat auditorium for product announcements and talks. The roof will be covered in a 300-meter-long garden, divided into different zones, including a “pause area” filled with wildflowers and woodland plants, a cafe, and a 200-meter “trim trail” for runners.

Currently, Google’s staff are situated in a number of different sites around London, including other properties in the King’s Cross area. (The building next door, 7 Pancras Square, is home to the company’s AI subsidiary, DeepMind.) The new building will bring together the city’s Googlers in one campus, and will be the first Google building outside of the US to be 100 percent owned and designed by the tech giant.

The company recommitted to the project following Brexit last year, with CEO Sundar Pichai saying: “Here in the UK, it’s clear to me that computer science has a great future with the talent, educational institutions, and passion for innovation we see all around us. We are committed to the UK and excited to continue our investment in our new King’s Cross campus.”

Parts of the building will overlook canals in the Kings Cross area.

Google Campus Coworking Offices – London

  • Jump Studios
  • Client Google Campus ,
  • Location United Kingdom , London , England ,
  • Industry Coworking ,

A bit about the project from architects, Jump Studios :

“Google Campus is a seven storey co-working and event space in the centre of London’s Tech City, otherwise known as Silicon Roundabout. The project, run by Google UK, aims to fuel the success of London’s tech start up community. Working with partners Seedcamp, Tech Hub, Springboard and Central Working, the primary function of Campus will be to provide office space for startup companies, but the facilities will also host daily events, offer regular speaker series with leading technology and entrepreneurship experts, hold networking events and run a constant mentoring program where Google staff will share their experience and expertise with residents. Non-residential registered users will have access to the cafe and co-working space on the lower ground floor. The design challenge was to take an unprepossessing seven-storey office building and to create an interplay between dynamic, open, social spaces and more intimate working hubs, with flexibility to accommodate a shifting workforce and a diverse program of events. Much of the architectural focus has been on opening up and connecting the ground and lower ground floors programmatically to play host to a series of socialized spaces, from reception and informal meeting areas to theatre, cafe and workshop spaces. Furthermore the overall look and feel of the building was designed to reflect the nature of the future occupants of the building: young start-ups who are just about to kick off their careers rather than well established corporate companies. By stripping back the building to its core, exposing all services, revealing the existing structure of ceiling slabs and columns and combining this with utilitarian and inexpensive materials such as linoleum and plywood a raw aesthetic has been created not dissimilar to a garage or workshop.”

Pocket-lint

Inside google london: a park, a coffee lab and nightclub-style meeting rooms.

Chances are that your office doesn’t have a full-blown cinema, an indoor park, a blue velvet clad band rehearsal room or even a dedicated coffee lab that will let you drink over 19 different blends.

That’s because you don’t work in the Google London office, where the 350 engineers based in the heart of Victoria are beavering away to create the "next big thing".

"The building creates excitement, that's good for us," Nelson Mattoss, Google’s VP for Europe and emerging markets engineering, told Pocket-lint and other journalists when we were invited in for a tour of the newly opened fourth floor at Google's London HQ.

Gone is the focus on open planned offices or cubicles that many companies opt for; in, are a number of small, more intimate, and fun spaces that aim to inspire Googlers to come up with new ideas.

The Google London office has responsibility for areas of some of Google's key products and services like Adsense, Privacy, Maps, Local, Android, Chrome, Voice, and site design. In some cases that responsibility is actually driving the services forward, making sure the engineers in the building stay on top of their game.

Take the velvet lined band room complete with soundproofing, drums, piano, guitars and other instruments that allow even the amateur to hone their skills during down time, it is a karaoke party room in the waiting.

Then there is the pool and games room complete with the latest 60-inch Samsung TV, PS3, Xbox 360 with Kinect and other boxes littered around, all designed to let you blow off steam or release that "light bulb" moment...

When Google staff aren’t enjoying the toys (we noticed, they are encouraged to bring in toys to put on their desk) they get to have meetings in rooms named after famous computers or programming languages of old that look more like nightclubs than boring office space. The cinema-come-lecture-theatre that is clad in red velvet curtains is called Colossus. Others are called Basic, Haskel II, Cobol, and Dart.

To inspire and allow you to note that idea down at anytime, most of the walls are white boards ready to be jotted on, while meeting rooms are more akin to nooks and dens rather than somewhere where you all huddle around a speakerphone for long, boring, conference calls.

Lunch, snacks and coffee in the Star Trek-themed building are important too. Google employees get free food every day whenever they want from the canteen (situated on the 5th floor) and there is always an array of specials on offer including a sushi bar.

But perhaps knowing that Google engineers need extra stimulation, L4, as it is known, features a state of the art coffee lab that has 19 different types of coffee, five specifically designed for Google. The worktops are made from coffee beans set in resin. The attention to detail is amazing.

Of course, once one has taken ownership of the coffee, they can take it in the fake indoor park complete with trees, deck chairs, a rowing boat with oars, and a Winnie the Pooh for good measure - yes he has a Google security pass.

Why all the fuss? Mattoss is hoping that such niceties will allow him and Google to grow the staff from the current 350 to 1000 in the coming years. With engineers so highly sort after the company clearly feels it has to do everything it can to lure the best talent; and once it has them, give them numerous reasons not to leave the building.

"The design was driven and project-managed by our London engineers. It is within informal environments that ideas come out. A relaxed environment is very important to us," adds Mattoss on why he feels the building works so well for those that work there.

Google buys London office complex for $1bn

Google

Google on Friday agreed to buy a central London building complex for $1 billion, but stressed it remained committed to new hybrid working patterns in the wake of COVID.

The tech titan will purchase the Central St Giles office site, where it is a tenant, for the equivalent of 872 million euros.

Google said it would give the site a multi-million-pound overhaul for flexible working patterns, including outdoor work spaces.

"This investment represents Google's continued confidence in the office as a place for in-person collaboration and connection," the group said in a statement.

The company expects about one fifth of its workforce to continue working remotely as a result of pandemic-induced changes to work.

"We have been privileged to operate in the UK for nearly 20 years, and our purchase of the Central St Giles development reflects our continued commitment to the country's growth and success," said Ruth Porat, chief financial officer of Google parent group Alphabet.

"Our focus remains on creating flexible workspaces that foster innovation, creativity and inclusivity."

The purchase is part of Google's broader expansion in central London, where it is also building a large development.

Google will eventually have capacity for 10,000 staff in the UK, up from 6,400.

The British government meanwhile welcomed Google's latest expansion as the UK looks to retain heavyweight companies in the wake of Brexit.

"This investment in jobs from Google is a big vote of confidence in the UK as a world-leading tech hub," said finance minister Rishi Sunak.

"It is also proof that this country continues to be one of the most attractive places in the world for leading firms to grow their business."

It comes after Google last year announced plans to buy a New York City office building for $2.1 billion.

Ahmad Sarmast speaking to members of the Zohra orchestra, an ensemble of 35 women, in Kabul, Afghanistan

Outcry forces Home Office to allow Afghan youth orchestra to go on England tour

Officials had earlier refused visas to Portugal-based musicians on Breaking the Silence tour days before first concert

The Home Office has been forced into a U-turn and has now granted visas to the Afghan youth orchestra for their tour of England, after its earlier refusal threw their planned tour into chaos days before it was due to begin.

The band of 47 exiled musicians aged between 14 and 22 had been working for months on their repertoire for the shows, which are due to start at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London on Thursday.

The Home Office had initially refused their visa applications but overturned the decision on Monday following public criticism.

The musicians are also booked to play in Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.

Diana Johnson MP, the chair of the home affairs select committee, wrote on X: “Excellent news and glad the @ukhomeoffice have done the right thing. Thank you to everyone who made this happen.”

The orchestra’s director, Dr Ahmad Sarmast, said the group have performed freely in Switzerland, France, Italy and Germany among other countries since they were chased out of their home country by the Taliban. Sarmast had described the Home Office’s initial decision as “heart-breaking”.

One of their most recent concerts was at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Among those helping them get out of Kabul were the international classical music stars Daniel Barenboim and Yo-Yo Ma.

After fleeing to Qatar from their home country when the Taliban retook power in 2021, the orchestra is now based in Portugal where the players were granted immigration rights and are in education at Portuguese music schools, according to Sarmast.

But he said the Home Office had initially told them it was not convinced by the information the orchestra provided about the status of the students, saying it was vague.

Speaking to the Guardian before the Home Office’s U-turn, Sarmast said: “The group has been denied visas for entry to the UK to complete this wonderful tour called Breaking the Silence.

“We have played all over the world since we left [Afghanistan] but we never faced this.”

The orchestra said the refusal was a “significant blow” that “deprived these young musicians an opportunity to raise awareness through music about the gender apartheid against Afghan women and denial of cultural rights of the Afghan people by the Taliban”.

The orchestra is part of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM), which was established in 2010. When the Taliban retook power its campus in Kabul was seized as a command centre, its bank accounts were frozen, its offices ransacked and its instruments left abandoned.

Last summer the Taliban shared a picture of officials presiding over a bonfire of musical instruments and equipment. Playing and listening to music is heavily restricted under the regime.

In 2014 the ANIM symphony orchestra was performing at the French cultural centre in Kabul when a bomb ripped through the venue. Sarmast was knocked unconscious, both eardrums were perforated leaving him deaf, and he received serious shrapnel injuries. After months of treatment in Australia, he recovered his hearing.

“The main purpose of the orchestra is not only to share Afghan music in exile while it is banned and suppressed [under the Taliban] but to achieve cultural diplomacy – people to people – across the world,” he said.

“This denies our people the opportunity to let people in the UK know about what is happening in Afghanistan and share the beauty of Afghan music.”

The orchestra had prepared a repertoire of Afghan, south Asian and western classical music to perform at the Southbank Centre in London, the Tung auditorium in Liverpool, Stoller Hall in Manchester and at Birmingham Town Hall.

The Home Office has been approached for comment.

The tour is in support of the rapper’s latest release, ‘Set It Off’.  The Migos rapper released his highly-anticipated second album last year, featuring verses from  his estranged wife Cardi B , as well as Travis Scott ,  Future ,  Latto  and more.

In a three-star review of the LP, NME shared: “[The album] doesn’t reflect Offset’s legacy. In the  Metro Boomin -produced 2017 single ‘Ric Flair Drip’, Offset alludes that he’s in the same league as the 16-time wrestling champion – perhaps he’s more like Jeff Hardy; a beloved solo figure, but at his best with his brothers.”

In other news, it was reported earlier this year that Offset and Cardi B had reportedly fallen victim to the rising trend of ‘swatting’ hoaxes .

On January 8, TMZ  obtained body cam footage of an August 2023 incident, where a dispatched SWAT team went to investigate an alleged shooting at the rapper couple’s Sandy Springs, Georgia home. The police were greeted by Offset’s uncle, Derrick Cephus, on the driveway, who called his nephew and told him, “Someone said Cardi got shot.
