Google will now let you use AI to build travel itineraries for your vacations

let as travel

As we inch toward the summer holidays, Google is announcing a slate of travel updates that place it squarely in the travel planning process and give it a lot more insight into purchasing intent in the travel sector.

First up, Google is rolling out an update to its Search Generative Experience (SGE) that will allow users to build travel itineraries and trip ideas using AI, the company announced on Wednesday.

The new capability — currently only available in English in the U.S. to users enrolled in Search Labs , its program that lets users experiment with early-stage Google Search experiences and share feedback — draws on ideas from sites across the web, along with reviews, photos and other details that people have submitted to Google for places around the world.

When users ask for something like “plan me a three day trip to Philadelphia that’s all about history,” they will get a sample itinerary that includes attractions and restaurants, as well as an overview of options for flights and hotels, divided up by times of day.

For now, the itineraries are just that: There are no options to buy services or experiences on the spot. When you’re happy with your itinerary, you can export it to Gmail, Docs or Maps.

Google has not commented on when or if it might roll this out more widely. But it points to how the company is experimenting with how and where it can apply its AI engine. A lot of players in the travel industry may be eyeing up the role that generative AI will play in travel services in the coming years — some excitedly, some warily. But even now, startups like Mindtrip and Layla , which provide users with access to AI assistants that are designed to help you plan your trips, are already actively pursuing this.

But with this new update, Google is taking on startups like these while also gathering data about travel purchasing intent (useful for its wider ad business) and learning what kind of appetite its users might have for such services.

Google also announced that it’s making it easier to discover lists of recommendations in Google Maps in select cities in the U.S. and Canada. If you search for a city in Maps, you will now see lists of recommendations for places to go from publishers like The Infatuation, as well as from other users. You will also see curated lists of top, trending, and hidden gem restaurants in 40+ U.S. cities.

Finally, the company is adding new tools to help you customize lists you create, so you can better organize your travel plans or share your favorite spots with your friends and family. You can choose the order the places appear in a list so you can organize them by top favorites or chronologically like an itinerary. Plus, you can link to content from your social channels.

Flying with pets? Here's what to know.

By Anne Marie Lee

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 6, 2024 / 10:08 AM EDT / CBS News

Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing.

Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.

For example, American Airlines recently revised its policies so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.

Cargo, check-in or carry-on?

Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions.

Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo.

A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. (You can learn more about the differences between cargo, check-in and carry-on options here , including warnings about the dangers involved when pets travel in the cargo hold.)

Carry-on pets

Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.

"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was being fostered by a friend after being found as a stray puppy in 2021.

In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum.

image000000-1.jpg

Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced.

"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."

Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it."

Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.

"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.

Safety and comfort

For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety.

"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.

Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.

Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024. In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website.

On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which she said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours.

"I'm not sure how I'd handle a flight to Singapore," Rauch said.

Here's a rundown of U.S. airlines' pet travel policies, along with fees and and restrictions:

When I searched for a Universal travel agent to help with our vacation, I wasn’t sure how it would work. You’ve exceeded any expectations I had! I’m so happy I found you!

Kyle Parsons

We visit Universal a lot and this was the first time we ever used an agent. I’ll never book on my own again because of all you did for us. Who knew?! We’re so grateful!

Elizabeth Hudson

I’m very sad to be home, but we had so much fun. The all-inclusive route made so much sense just as you suggested! Can’t wait to post all our photos on Instagram!

This was our first cruise and definitely won’t be our last! In fact we’re ready to book our next one! I want to get started NOW! We’re officially hooked! Thank you!

Samantha Goldstein

What a great decision it was to add on those last two days at Universal. We had the best time. The kids are already asking when we’re coming back! We’re excited to go again!

Work exchange programs like WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) and HelpX offer a unique opportunity to travel the world on a budget. These programs connect prospective workers with hosts who provide food and accommodation in exchange for help with tasks like farming, gardening, or household chores. Those who participate in these get to immerse themselves in local communities and cultures in a truly unique way. Whether you’re planting crops in rural France or tending to animals in New Zealand, work exchanges provide a meaningful way to explore the globe while minimizing expenses.

Airline workers on the ground level, such as cargo handlers and ramp agents, often enjoy fantastic travel benefits that allow them to fly all over the world. These employees are often responsible for loading and unloading cargo, directing aircraft movements on the tarmac, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of flights. If you want a job that rewards you by flying you off to your destination of choice, then check out the aviation industry!

Airline Crew Members (Ground Level)

Airline workers on the ground level, such as cargo handlers and ramp agents, often enjoy fantastic travel benefits that allow them to fly all over the world. These employees are often responsible for loading and unloading cargo, directing aircraft movements on the tarmac, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of flights. If you want a job that rewards you by flying you off to your destination of choice, then check out the aviation industry!

Despite the unusual disturbance, the flight was delayed only briefly, about 15-30 minutes, and passengers commended American Airlines for their swift handling of the situation.

Cargo Aircraft Pilot

It’s challenging to secure a job as a pilot due to the rigorous training requirements, stringent safety standards, and competitive nature of the aviation industry. Compared to passenger aircraft, it’s often easier to land a job as a pilot for cargo planes due to less stringent requirements, including fewer flight hour prerequisites and lower educational qualifications, making it more accessible. Working as a pilot for cargo planes can serve as a valuable stepping stone to eventually transitioning to passenger aircraft.

During the Elizabethan era, “breaking a leg” referred to when an actor stepped onto the stage, as the raised platform was known as the “leg.” Thus, to “break a leg” meant to make an appearance on stage, which all actors hoped to do. This interpretation emphasizes the phrase’s literal connection to stage performance.

While the idea of traveling while making films sounds amazing, breaking into the industry and making a steady living can be tough. There’s tons of competition, jobs can be sporadic, and money can be tight. Add travel costs on top of that, and you’ve got yourself a real uphill battle. If you’re truly passionate about turning filming into a career, there’s an opportunity waiting for you to explore beautiful landscapes and discover new stories. So, get busy, get creative, and start making those dreams a reality!

Parenting in the modern world seems to be marred with increased fears and anxieties compared to previous generations. With the advent of digital technology, social media, and an ever-evolving society, parents today are navigating a unique landscape of challenges and concerns. Let’s look into the factors contributing to this heightened sense of fear among today’s caregivers.

Au Pair World is a platform that connects au pairs and host families across the world. Through this service, individuals have the chance to immerse themselves in different cultures while providing childcare assistance to host families. This program offers a unique opportunity for cultural exchange and personal growth, allowing au pairs to experience life in various countries while living with a host family.

Highly productive people often share common habits and strategies that enable them to achieve more while maintaining a balanced lifestyle. These practices are not just about managing time but also about optimizing energy and focus. How these cruise passengers missed boarding, got stranded in Africa

Both Americans and Australians were left at port after an excursion ran long.

After what seemed like a dream trip, several American travelers were left stranded at port in West Africa mid-cruise while traveling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain.

Jay and Jill Campbell told ABC News Myrtle Beach affiliate WPDE that they were in the first week of a three week voyage aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines when they stopped just off the coast of West Africa.

The couple and others opted to tour the nearby island of São Tomé and Príncipe on the afternoon of March 27, and when the excursion ran late, they said they brought it to the guides' attention.

"We were like, 'our time is getting short,'" Jay Campbell recalled, at which point he said the guide let them know, "'No problem we can get you back in an hour.'"

Upon their return, the passengers said cruise officials refused to let them aboard the ship, even as the local Coast Guard had ferried the group to the anchored vessel.

"The harbormaster tried to call the ship. The captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL the customer service emergency number," Jay Campbell said. "They said the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is via email. They're not responding to our emails."

The Campbells say they were left stranded along with four other Americans and two Australians -- of whom one is a paraplegic, one has a heart condition and one is pregnant. Some did not have credit cards or medication that was left on board.

Cruise expert Stewart Chiron, known as The Cruise Guy, told ABC News that "the bottom line was, they were hours late, the ship was ready to go."

"More than likely that the anchor was already up, and the ship was already possibly moving," he said.

He continued, "Any operation at that point to get these passengers back on the ship would have caused tremendous delays, and safety would have been a major concern."

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said, "On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

They continued, "While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship's intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel."

The spokesperson added that the passports for the passengers who did not return at the all aboard time "were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol."

"Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call," they said.

The Campbells said that their eight person group spent 15 hours traveling through six countries in an attempt to rejoin the Norwegian Dawn ship in Banjul, Gambia, on April 1. However, the ship couldn't dock due to low tide, so they are now trying to get to Senegal where the ship is meant to dock on Tuesday.

PHOTO: In this Feb. 2, 2021 file photo, a panoramic view of the Obo National Park is seen in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The Norwegian spokesperson said, "Unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests' disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority."

The cruise line contacted the guests "regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024."

In light of the "series of unfortunate events outside of our control," the spokesperson said Norwegian Cruise Lines "will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal" and are still in communication with the guests to provide additional information as it becomes available.

In a separate, unrelated situation that took place coincidentally on the same day of the voyage, the spokesperson said, "An 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

"In instances such as these, as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent," the spokesperson added, saying they worked with the port agent to receive updates.

"The guest has since been escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return," they said.

A big airline is relaxing its pet policy to let owners bring the companion and a rolling carry-on

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — American Airlines is relaxing part of its pet policy to let owners bring their companion and a full-size carry-on bag into the cabin.

Until this week, people who carried a pet into the cabin — which involves paying a $150 fee — could only have one other small item that fit under the seat.

Anything bigger, like a carry-on bag with wheels, needed to be checked — for a $35 fee. Or they could put the pet in the cargo hold.

Now American is letting passengers bring a pet in the cabin and also bring a regular carry-on bag or a personal item — just not both bags.

The old policy struck some pet owners as unfair, since they were already paying a pet fee.

Gary Leff, a travel blogger who first wrote about the change, recalled traveling years ago with a Yorkshire terrier.

“It was always frustrating that the dog counted as the carry-on even though I was paying the extra (pet) fee that was sometimes more than the ticket for me,” he said Friday.

Leff said he thinks American’s change will reduce the urge for travelers to falsely claim that their pet is a service animal that flies for free.

An American spokeswoman confirmed that the rules change took effect Thursday.

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” she said.

Introduction

Using affirm, major retailers that accept affirm, stores that accept affirm financing.

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate personal loans to write unbiased product reviews.

What is Affirm?

Maybe you're working on a tight budget, but you need to buy something important, you want to take advantage of an online sales event, or you have gifts to buy for everyone in your life. What do you do? Short of having an awkward conversation with a friend or family member to borrow some money, there's a more convenient way to manage how you pay for online purchases, on your own terms.

Benefits of using Affirm for purchases

Affirm is a payment option you'll see when you check out your cart at many online shopping sites. It's especially useful for large purchases such as furniture and mattresses because it lets you pay them off over a period of time (usually three, six, or 12 months).

Annual percentage rates (APRs) vary widely with Affirm, ranging from 0% to 30%, so you'll want to compare and contrast with other loan options including credit cards first. That said, you'll always be shown upfront the total amount of interest you'll pay. Affirm does not charge any additional fees.

You can apply for a loan as you're shopping at one of many Affirm's partner stores, which include women's and men's fashion, furniture, kitchenware, home appliances, sports and fitness, electronics, jewelry, and watch brands.

When it comes time to pay, you'll see something like the below:

From there, you can create an account, get approved for a loan, and pay off your purchase at a pace you're comfortable with.

Technology and electronics

 • Auto Anything
 • Morris 4X4 Center

Home and furniture

You may want to also consider one of the top credit cards with 0% APR to finance bigger home purchases like electronics from Best Buy or furniture from Pottery Barn.

 • Bed in a Box
 • Boll & Branch
 • Brooklyn Bedding
 • East Fork Pottery
 • Floyd Home *
 • Framebridge
 • Great Jones
 • Joss and Main
 • Pottery Barn
 • Revival Rugs
 • Saatchi Art
 • Serena & Lily

You can get an Affirm loan with several popular mattress retailers, including Casper and Nectar.

 • Allswell Home
 • Awara Sleep
 • Dreamcloud *
 • Eight Sleep
 • Layla Sleep *
 • Tuft & Needle *

Fashion and Apparel

If you're looking to up your style game, you have several options that take Affirm, including big-box retailer Walmart and shoe titan Adidas.

 • Cole Haan *
 • Eddie Bauer *
 • La Garconne
 • Universal Standard *

Accessories

You can use an Affirm loan to purchase watches and glasses from retailers including Lenscrafters and Warby Parker.

 • Felix Gray *
 • Glasses.com *
 • Lenscrafters
 • Warby Parker *

Health and fitness

Borrowers looking to focus on their health and wellbeing will find that Affirm can finance more expensive purchases. This includes products like a kayak from the Austin Kayak Company or an exercise bike from Peloton.

 • Austin Kayak Company

Loans from Affirm aren't just for material items — you can also use them to book hotels, airlines and vacation rentals through the travel portals we've included below.

 • CheapTickets
 • Travelocity

No, you cannot use Affirm at any store. However, Affirm partners with thousands of retailers across various categories, so you have a wide range of participating stores to choose from, both online and brick-and-mortar.

Affirm charges 0% to 30% APR based on your creditworthiness and the specific retailer. Some purchases may also qualify for 0% APR, which makes them interest-free as long as you adhere to the repayment schedule.

To know if an online store accepts Affirm, look for the Affirm logo at checkout or select Affirm as your payment option. You can also find a list of participating stores on the Affirm website.

Yes, you can return an item purchased with Affirm, but returns are subject to the retailer's return policy. Upon processing, Affirm will refund the amount you've already paid and cancel any future payments related to that purchase.

An Affirm loan may involve a soft credit check, which does not affect your credit score. However, like any credit product, your payment history can impact your credit score.
