After you’ve had your fill of beignets, strolled through spooky cemeteries and explored other highlights in New Orleans , slow down with a local swamp tour. New Orleans swamp tours offer beautiful scenery and the chance to spot alligators and other native wildlife. Plus, many of them offer transportation to and from the city.

Read on to discover the best New Orleans swamp tours by airboat, kayak, flat-bottomed boat and even zip line. All of the recommended tours either include transportation from the French Quarter and/or New Orleans hotels or offer it as an add-on service.

Best Airboat Tour: Airboat Adventures – Small Airboat Tour

Price: From $89 Duration: 2 hours

For a classic airboat swamp tour in New Orleans, choose Airboat Adventures. With this tour operator, you can expect interesting guides and multiple glimpses of alligators as you weave through 20,000-plus acres of cypress swamps. After your roughly two-hour airboat ride, take some time to explore the company's indoor facility, which houses Sugar, an albino gator.

While tours are available in both small (10 people) and large (30 people) boats, recent tourgoers recommend opting for a small boat tour, as the small airboats can access more remote corners of the swamp.

Pregnant women, children younger than 5 and people with back and neck injuries are not permitted to ride on the airboats. Pets, including service animals, are also prohibited due to the loud noise from the boat. The company provides ear protection, but you may want to bring your own if you are extra sensitive.

Transportation: Hotel pickup and dropoff is available for those staying at hotels in Greater New Orleans; the cost is $30 per person. If you'll be driving to the tour departure point, it's located at 5145 Fleming Park Road, Lafitte, LA 70067 .

Best Kayak Tour: New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours – Manchac Swamp Kayak Tour

Price: From $75 Duration: 2 hours

Novice kayakers will appreciate this paddle in Manchac Swamp, as it's especially suitable for beginners. During the tour, you'll wind your way through the swamp's calm waters and take a gander at the local wildlife.

For an even more memorable experience, take the early morning or evening tour to see the swamp bathed in warm light. Summer and early fall tours will give you the best chance for seeing alligators and turtles. Reviewers say you'll gain lots of insight not only about the area's ecology but also about local history.

Transportation: Transportation is available for an additional $25 per person. Shuttles depart from the Rampart Treehouse restaurant ( 740 N. Rampart St. ) downtown.

The company also runs tours of the Honey Island Swamp and a half-day kayak tour through the Shell Bank bayou.

Best Flat-bottomed Boat Tour: Cajun Encounters – Swamp Tour

Price: Adults from $59.95; kids from $38.75 Duration: 2 hours

Cajun Encounters' daily tour of the Honey Island Swamp takes place on a flat-bottomed boat. Each ride includes commentary from a friendly guide as you look for alligators, wild boar, owls and more. Tourists say the guides are informative and fun and highly recommend the tour, but caution there are many bugs.

Transportation: Hotel pickup and dropoff is included in the rates noted above; cheaper tickets are available for those who can drive to the tour location ( 55345 U.S. Route 90, Slidell, LA 70461 ).

Cajun Encounters also runs VIP tours (which have up to 10 to 12 passengers) as well as tours of the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can expect to pay at least $50 per person for a swamp tour that includes transportation; if you have a rental car for your trip to New Orleans, you can save some coin by driving to the tour location. Fees also vary depending on the company and type of vessel used to explore the swamps.

If alligators are your top reason for trekking to the swamp, plan for a spring or summer tour, as alligators enter a state of brumation (a modified period of hibernation) during the cold weather months.

Perhaps the most famous swamp in New Orleans is Honey Island. For those interested in visiting this swamp exclusively, Honey Island Swamp Tours and Cajun Encounters are both great options.

You'll want to dress casually for your swamp tour in New Orleans – a T-shirt and shorts or lightweight pants is ideal. You'll also want to bring a light jacket in case you get chilly or it rains during your tour.

Some swamp tour boats (not airboats), such as those operated by the Louisiana Tour Company , offer bathrooms, while others do not. If this is important to you, be sure to double-check whether or not this amenity is offered when booking.

Swamp Tours New Orleans

Which tour is best for you.

new orleans swamp tour prices

This post is a review of the best New Orleans swamp tours available to you, including airboat tours, canoe, and kayak trips as well as nighttime and free options.

Since 2010, we have operated walking tours in New Orleans, serving tens of thousands of visitors to the city each year.

And, many of our guides bring groups from New Orleans to the 3 main swamps around New Orleans.

We see the good, the bad, and the exceptional of all of the swamp tour companies out there.

An in this video, Andrew, a tour guide with us, Free Tours by Foot New Orleans, goes over everything you need to know when considering one.

And the number one question we get asked is whether a swamp tour is worth it or not.

The answer is most likely a resounding yes.

Just check out what some of the roughly 40k members of our New Orleans Travel Tips Facebook Group have to say.

Swamp Tours in New Orleans

Aside from alligators, the swamps are teeming with wildlife, including wild boars, raccoons, snakes, bald eagles, herons, egrets, mink, and turtles.

Another highlight of these excursions is the flora and fauna, particularly gliding through the moss-covered cypress trees.

And if you are considering adding a swamp tour to your itinerary, then you will quickly see that there are many companies to choose from as well as options to explore the swamps.

Most swamp tour companies operate in either the Honey Island Swamp or the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, both of which are between a 30-45 minute drive from the French Quarter.

Click on the map to enlarge it.

Swamp Tours New Orleans

A couple of others operate in the Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area, approximately 30-minute drive west of the Quarter.

You could choose a flat-bottomed swamp boat , which is the most common option. Swamp boats can accommodate between 15-28 people.

Large Swamp Boats New Orleans

Or you can go on an airboat tour, which is a smaller, faster boat with a large fan attached to it.

Airboat Swamp New Orleans

Alternatively, you can go by kayak or canoe or you could even go on a hike.

There is even a nighttime swamp tour that operates on Thursdays through Sundays from June through September.

TIP: If you are considering the New Orleans Pass  or the Sightseeing Pass , tourist discount cards, then keep in mind that both include swamp tour experiences at no additional cost.

SWAMP BOAT TOURS

There are numerous companies offering tours of the surrounding swamps via swamp boats.

A flat-bottomed boat generally carries approximately 22 people, though some offer smaller (and more expensive) swamp boat tours.

Expect to pay at least $20/adult and $13/child (though there are occasional discounts) if you drive up to the swamps on your own.

If you add hotel pick-up, then expect to pay at least $42/adult and $21/child for transportation from downtown New Orleans.

Tours last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, and this is consistent among all companies.

These large boats offer an easy and relatively affordable way to experience Louisiana's bayous and swamp.

CAJUN ENCOUNTERS

New Orleans cajun encounters

This company is probably the largest most well-known and best-reviewed outfit. They operate in the Honey Island Swamp.

They are our choice for an operator because their size means that they usually can fit you in.

They use 22 passenger swamp boats for their public tours and have 10 passenger swamp boats for private bookings.

They offer online booking, which is not something that many other companies offer (which we find annoying).

They also offer a seasonal night swamp tour from May through September.

They will pick up from just about any hotel in downtown New Orleans. They have an excellent review profile, averaging 4.5 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor.

Read our post reviewing all of Cajun Encounters tours .

Tour Start Times:

If you choose to be transported, then the pick-up times are as follows:

CAJUN PRIDE

Cajun Pride is unique from other companies in that they operate in their own private swamp , which they claim means that your boat will be alone on the water.

Cajun Pride Tours

In addition to their large swamp boats (28 passengers), they also offer a smaller boat (16 passengers).

They have a good review profile on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( see the reviews ).

Since their tours are the Maurepas Swamp to the west of the city, this company may be a good option for those who are also planning a trip to one of the plantations .

One bonus is hotel pick-up from most New Orleans hotels.

JEAN LAFITTE SWAMP TOURS

Much like its competitors, this company operates in the Jean Lafitte Swamp, providing swamp and airboat rides around the area.

They offer their tours with or without transportation to and from the departure point, allowing you to save money by using your own car if you'd like.

Their prices are comparable to most of the other options on our list and they offer a total of 4 tours per day (10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM & 4 PM).

The main advantage of choosing this service is that their children's tickets are very affordable.

  • $29 - Adults
  • $12 - Child (under 13)
  • $52 - Adults
  • $26 - Child (under 13)

TIP: This tour is available for free with transportation from the French Quarter with the New Orleans Sightseeing Pass .

If you plan on doing a lot of different things in the city, this could be a great way to save money on a swamp tour.

HONEY ISLAND SWAMP TOURS (DR WAGNER'S

This outfit also focuses on just swamp and bayou tours. As their name makes clear, they operate in the Honey Island Swamp.

They claim that they use small swamp boats, but they appear to use the standard 20-passenger swamp boats. They provide two options, drive-up and hotel pickup .

They also have a good review profile .

Additional Companies:

If you are considering purchasing  the New Orleans Power Pass , keep in mind that this company's swamp tour is included in the price.

It only includes the tour and not the ride to the swamp, which you could arrange with Ultimate Swamp Adventures for an additional $15.

Cajun Critters

Like the other companies listed above, this company offers 2-hour swamp boat tours. This outfit heads into the Jean Lafitte Swamp, due south of the French Quarter.

AIRBOAT SWAMP TOURS

There are a few companies that offer airboat tours; They are faster than swamp boats and can be more thrilling, but they are more expensive.

The biggest advantage of airboat tours is that they are usually smaller than swamp boats and therefore can get deeper into the swamps, especially when the rivers and bayous are at low tide.

There are restrictions on who could take these tours, including pregnant women, children under 5, and those who are physically disabled or have neck or back problems.

We include a few options below, but for a full comparison, read our post on airboat tours in New Orleans .

Louisiana Tour Company

Unlike its competitors, this company offers services both with or without transportation to the departure point.

If you’re looking to save money on travel expenses, this might be your best bet.

We like that they offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before tour time.

Some of their airboat tours include hotel pick-up as well.

This is easily one of the most affordable and popular airboat tours on our list, and they operate only 35-40 miles outside of downtown New Orleans.

Duration w/ Transport: 3 ½ - 4 hours.

Large (up to 16 passengers)

  • Tour times:  9:40 am, 12:10 pm, 2:10 pm, 4:15 pm

With a rating of between 4 ½ - 5 out of 5 stars on both Get Your Guide and TripAdvisor, it’s pretty clear that most people really enjoy the service provided by this company ( read reviews here ).

Guests indicate that their tour guides are very friendly and informative, providing a lot of details about the swamps and bayous in the area and giving customers a great look at the wildlife.

Visitors also appreciate the thrill of traveling through the swamps at incredibly fast speeds.

AIRBOAT ADVENTURES TOURS

This outfit operates in the Jean Lafitte Swamp. They offer drive-up and hotel pickup pricing.

Like many of the swamp tour companies, they seem to not take online bookings directly.

KAYAK AND CANOE SWAMP TOURS

Arguably the best way to explore the swamps and bayous around New Orleans is in a kayak or canoe.

No other method can get you deeper into the swamps than by small craft.

However, you will lose range, as you will not have the benefit of a high-speed engine.

And if you are concerned about the danger of alligators, you shouldn't be. Alligators avoid humans unless confronted and surprised.

Kayak and canoe tours are usually a bit more expensive than swamp boats, but cheaper than airboats.

New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tours

With an experienced guide at the helm, New Orleans Kayak Swamp Tour offers picturesque 2 – 2.5 hour narrated kayak trips through locations such as Manchac Swamp, the Pearl River, Honey Island Swamp, and Cane Bayou.

Groups average 10 paddlers, although larger groups are welcome – please contact the company directly for private tours and discounts.

Jean Lafitte National Park Service

While canoeing and kayaking through the Park are definitely great ways to explore this area, the Barataria Preserve in Marrero is currently impassable, due to the overgrowth of aquatic vegetation.

Be sure to check the Park's website for more information. www.nps.gov/jela  Tel 504-589-2133

Barataria Preserve Jean Lafitte National Historical Park

An extremely cost-effective way (if you have a car) to experience the swampland near New Orleans is to take advantage of the National Park Service, which leads hikers through the Barataria Preserve , a southern unit of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve located about a 30-minute drive south of the French Quarter.

The Park Services operates a visitor center with exhibits highlighting the development of the swamp area.

You can pick up self-guided maps here and join a regularly scheduled park ranger hike from here.

You can also pick up self-guided maps to explore on your own. A description of the hikes can be found here.

Barataria Preserve Unit, 6588 Barataria Blvd, Marrero, LA 70072 ( map ) (504) 689-3690 (ext. 10)

In addition to this option, you can also visit Bayou Sauvage for free and see a lot of incredible native species.

New Orleans Walking Tours

The US Fish & Wildlife Service provides both a map of the bayou and a list of the types of birds you can see in the area.

Whether you're interested in bird watching or you want to see other animals such as alligators, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a close look at local wildlife in their natural habitat.

You'll find Bayou Sauvage just east of New Orleans, but if you want to experience the natural beauty of Louisiana without leaving city limits, consider a trip to City Park.

Visitors are welcome to check out the Couturie Forest for free.

You can expect to see various types of native birds, trees, and fish in a location that has several trails for walking and hiking.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

This was definitely our favorite part of our trip to Nola. Our guide, Erik, was really knowledgeable about swamps and gators and made this a truly memorable experience!

It was an amazing experience! The boat ride itself was a thrill, seeing all the different animals in their natural habitat was impressive! The swamp was beautiful and spooky at the same time with the overhanging trees and Spanish beards. We saw alligators, raccoons, birds, swamp cows.

From beginning to end, a delightful day. The Oak Alley tour was very informative. Our swamp tour was truly outstanding. Captain Ernie is personable, knowledgeable, and an all-around terrific captain. I cannot recommend this tour and this company enough!

We had a great time. Our guide was great, answered our many questions, and seemed genuinely interested in giving us the best tour possible. The airboat was pretty comfy and good fun.

Great tour very knowledgeable guide. Friendly and very prompt on pick up time. Guide was very funny and had a lot of personal knowledge about New Orleans.

Had a great time. Seen a bunch of alligators and learned a lot about an area. Ian was a great guide and was very knowledgeable about everything in the area.

We loved the whole thing! The bus driver was so nice, the plantation was lovely. But the highlight of our day was the airboat!! Ian was our guide and he was so knowledgeable about everything in the area!! Showed us so many things in nature from the cypress trees to the gators and all in between!! Highly recommend!!

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed the swamp experience. Our boat tour guide Ernie was full of information and a good sense of humor. I definitely recommend the tour to anyone thinking about it.

Captain Ernie was incredibly knowledgeable and an awesome host for the large airboat tour. We love learning new things and did!

We were picked up at Jackson Square and had a friendly air conditioned ride to the lovely Oak Alley Plantation and then a Airboat Swamp tour. The four of us enjoyed the staff and all the beautiful views and loved our Airboat Swamp tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and Airboat tour was lots of fun. Highly recommend!

7 Things To Do In New Orleans For Couples (Beyond The French Quarter) (2024)

Want to know all the best things to do in new orleans for couples that’ll get you outside the city we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know.

There are so many fun things to do in New Orleans for couples and this is the best one day itinerary that incorporates visiting the swamps, plantations, historic restaurants, and the best of the French Quarter.

We visited New Orleans for a long weekend as part of our 52 day Ultimate US Road Trip and we were hosted by the local tourism board, giving us access to just about every tourist attraction that exists.

We were able to do so much in this short weekend that we have another post of the best things to do in New Orleans in one day for even more ideas if you’re looking to stay only in the city.

You can check out all of our recommendations for couples in this video on our YouTube Channel .

Fun Things To Do In New Orleans For Couples

Here are some fun things to do in New Orleans for couples that can all be done in one day.

A couple recommendations are outside of the city, while the rest is in town and within the French Quarter.

1. Oak Alley Plantation

Oak Alley Plantation is roughly an hour drive outside of New Orleans, so we started our day at 8 am to arrive by 9 am.

The property is self guided, except for the inside of the plantation.

That is by guided tour only in small groups.

There is a drink stand just outside of the home that sells amazing Mint Juleps for $8 (in re-usable cups), so I recommend sipping on one of those as you roam the grounds.

There are many other plantation homes you can visit in the area, but since we were limited on time, I chose the one I thought we would enjoy the most.

You could probably make an entire day out of visiting plantations.

This property took us about an hour and a half to visit.

Click Here To Book Your Oak Alley Plantation Tour With Roundtrip Transportation Today!

2. Napoleon House

After the plantation tour, we drove back to New Orleans for the rest of the day.

It was about an hour drive back, so we arrived in the area around 12:30 pm.

First up was lunch.

I LOVE Muffuletta sandwiches ever since I tried one at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside resort.

So with that being said, we knew we’d have to get Muffuletta’s in New Orleans.

There’s another location known for their cold Muffuletta’s, but since I prefer mine served hot, we tried the Muffuletta at Napoleon House.

Napoleon House is also home to the Pimm’s Cup drink, so we were able to knock off two things from our food bucket list in one stop.

Lunch for both of us came out to $29.97 with tip.

Napoleon House is located in the French Quarter and has been around since 1914.

Straight from their website, here is their recipe for the Pimm’s Cup:

  • Fill a tall 12 oz glass with ice and add 1 1/4 oz Pimm’s #1 and 3 oz lemonade
  • Then top off with 7up
  • Garnish with cucumber

This was one of the iconic drinks in New Orleans that I would actually drink again!

3. Old Absinthe House

Next up on our drink list was the Absinthe House Frappe from the Old Absinthe House.

This place was built in the 1700s and became the Absinthe Room in 1874, which is also when the Absinthe House Frappe was first created.

As nice as this drink looks, it tastes like straight black licorice.

So if you love licorice, you’ll love this drink.

If not, you’ll hate it.

Also I believe this location is cash only – or at least it was while we were there.

We spent $17 for the one drink + tip.

4. Mardi Gras World

Around 1:30 pm we were done with lunch and drinks, so we took a Lyft over to Mardi Gras World for $15.

We were so excited to visit this warehouse where they house everything for Mardi Gras.

The best part is you get a free slice of King Cake, which is nearly impossible to find back home in California, so this was a huge highlight of our day.

This is a self guided and self paced tour through the warehouse and you can take as many pictures and videos as you want.

It was cool to see some of the older things, as well as things being refurbished for next year’s parade.

This is a must-do in New Orleans!

5. Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours

We finished up at Mardi Gras World around 2:30 pm and took a Lyft back to our hotel for $12.

We had to be ready to leave around 3 pm to head to our Swamp Tour at 4 pm.

It is about a 30-40 minute drive to Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours from New Orleans.

Our tour lasted about an hour and a half and we saw at least a dozen gators along the way!

We did an airboat ride through the Everglades last Summer and didn’t see a single gator, so JP was excited to finally see some out in the wild!

6. The Original French Market Restaurant

Our tour ended around 5:30 pm and then we drove the 30 minutes or so back to our hotel.

From there we took the Streetcar back down to the French Quarter for dinner.

We had day passes for $6 for both of us, so we were able to take it back and forth as much as we needed.

We had passed by the French Market many times and JP loved to smell the Crawfish in the window, so we decided to eat here for dinner.

It was around 7 pm when we arrived and we waited about 45 minutes for a table since the line was half way down the block.

For dinner we shared some Gumbo , JP had the Crawfish boil , and I had some Mac n Cheese .

For dessert we shared a slice of Pecan Pie .

All of this came out to $46.86 including tip.

7. Kilwin’s New Orleans

We finished dinner around 8:30 pm and started walking back toward the Streetcar.

Kilwin’s is one of the only bakery shops open late.

This is one of their only locations that does Pralines , so JP ordered a bunch of them.

Where To Stay In New Orleans For Couples: Club Wyndham Avenue Plaza

Club Wyndham Avenue Plaza is located in the Garden District and is just a short streetcar ride to the French Quarter.

We love this hotel because the rooms have a kitchen, dining table, separate bedroom, and a work space.

See the full walkthrough of the one bedrooms in this video on our YouTube Channel .

14 Ways To Experience French Culture In New Orleans

new orleans swamp tour prices

Historical Landmarks

Learning opportunities, french cuisine, french celebrations.

The Cabildo

New Orleans is a cultural powerhouse, blending French, Spanish, African, and American traditions to create one of the best food and music scenes in the country. When you think of New Orleans , chances are you associate the city with all things French.

Francophone—a term used to describe cultures, peoples, and languages influenced by France—activities and celebrations have seen a resurgence in recent years. From Joan of Arc celebrations to French language classes, Creole cuisine to French film festivals, New Orleanians are proud of their more than 300 years of history.

“Every time a new group of people settled in this region, they made a cultural impact on the city. It is a beautiful mix of a lot of different people here,” says Amanda McFillen, Director of Programs and Interpretive Services for The Historic New Orleans Collection.

The French were the first Europeans to colonize New Orleans, which remained under French rule until 1763, when the area became a Spanish colony. In 1803, Louisiana became an American territory. The city’s French roots grew deeper as waves of French-speaking immigrants from Canada (whose descendants are known as Cajuns) and Haiti settled in the area. Over time, Caribbean, Italian, German, and Irish immigrants; enslaved Africans; and free people of color all contributed rich traditions and culture to the region. The term Creole represents this ancestral complexity of many long-time residents of New Orleans.

In the French Quarter, or Vieux Carré, you can walk through these eras of history. The quarter was originally constructed according to French custom but was later renovated by the Spanish following extensive fires in the 18th century. For over a century, the French Quarter remained linguistically and culturally isolated from the rest of the city, contributing to the distinct architecture and traditions we see today. Even outside of the quarter, though, the influence of New Orleans’ many inhabitants is clear. “New Orleans is a city that sort of punches above its weight,” says Joey Mistro, the president of Franco-Louisiana organization L'Union Française. “There's way more cultural things to do here than you would expect in a city of its size.”

Here are some of the best ways to experience French culture in New Orleans, no matter when you're visiting.

Relish the History of Jackson Square

Standing in the center of Jackson Square, you’ll revel in the shadow of the St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States. French Catholics built the cathedral building in 1718, the early days of the French colony, and French services were routinely held until at least 1906. As you walk down the cathedral's nave, you'll pass the burial places of numerous French settlers who took up positions in the church.

Outside again, if you turn to face the cathedral and look to your left and right, you’ll see distinctive red brick buildings stretch down the square. These are the Pontalba Buildings , named after a wealthy 19th-century French family.

The Baroness de Pontalba was from New Orleans but lived most of her dramatic adult life in Paris.  Using her expertise in business and architecture, she decided to construct the buildings on inherited land. Engraved initials on the wrought iron balconies – AP for Almonester de Pontalba — cement her influence.

Experience 19th-century New Orleans at the BK House

The BK House , short for Beauregard-Keyes, is a National Historic Landmark in the French Quarter. Built in 1826, the house provides a glimpse into the lives of numerous pre-civil war French Creoles and laborers. The house was designed by Haitian architect Francois Correjolles, who utilized elements of a Creole cottage with Greek Revival features—a common architectural style to look out for in French Quarter. The house currently serves as the headquarters of the Nous Foundation , a Francophone cultural institute, and features an exhibition inspired by Haitian art.

Experience French Impressionist Art at the Degas House

At the Degas House , guests have the opportunity to experience Creole food and culture as it was experienced by French Impressionist Master, Edgar Degas, who stayed on the property for four months in the late nineteenth century. Non-inn guests can also enjoy a Creole breakfast, complete with French Waffles and oversized Creole omelets, and a history-focused house tour.

Discover the France-New Orleans Link at The Historic New Orleans Collection

Located in a historic building in the heart of the French Quarter, the Historic New Orleans Collection is a free history museum, research center, and publisher. Through their permanent exhibit, learn about the history of the French Quarter, from its construction by French settlers to its post-fire reconstruction by the Spanish. Then explore the museum's other permanent and temporary exhibits—as well as an exposed historic well.

Uncover History at Le Musée de f.p.c.

Le Musée de f.p.c.

Continue your stroll through history at Le Musée de f.p.c. , located just down the street from the Degas House. New Orleans has a long history of free people of color who spoke French and were Creoles, also referred to as gens de couleur libres. The historic house is constructed in the same Greek Revival style as the BK house, and the museum represents one of the country's only museums dedicated exclusively to telling the story of free people of color.

See the European-American Land Struggle at the State Museums

Two of Louisiana’s official museums are housed in the Cabildo and Presbytère , the two buildings on either side of the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. Over 200 years ago, France officially relinquished ownership of Louisiana during a ceremony in the Cabildo—the Louisiana Purchase . The Cabildo now hosts an exhibit on The Battle of New Orleans, when the British and their Spanish allies invaded the city because they did not recognize land deals made by the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as an exhibit on “people, places, and things that are quintessentially New Orleans.” The Presbytère also features two permanent exhibits: Mardi Gras: It’s Carnival Time in Louisian a and Living with Hurricanes: Katrina and Beyond .

Test Your Skills with French Language Classes

Whether you’re fluent or un amateur , multiple organizations offer French language groups to improve your skills—and, as an added benefit, get to know city residents involved in francophone events. If you’re staying for a while, L’Union Frances offers three-week French immersion classes . Alliance Française of New Orleans also offers French classes for all skill levels, as well as an informal French conversation group .

Dine with (Friendly) French Ghosts at Antoine's Restaurant

Taste history at Antoine's Restaurant , one of the oldest restaurants in the country. Try their famous Bananas Foster, a French toast dish topped with caramelized bananas and lit on fire at your table. After dinner, order an infamous French cocktail: a Cafe Brulot. The coffee cocktail involves boiling coffee with herbs and spices, adding an orange peel, and then lighting the concoction on fire to burn off some of the liquor and add a smokey flavor.

Treat Your Tastebuds to Dooky Chase

This legendary Creole restaurant, which once served as an important gathering place for activists during the Civil Rights Movement, makes a fine gumbo . Like most Creole foods, the dish is believed to blend West African, Native American, and French culinary traditions. As you eat, enjoy what many consider New Orleans’ finest collection of African American Art. Dooky Chase co-founder Leah Chase , who recently passed away in her 90s , was an inspiration for Princess Tiana from Disney's Princess and The Frog.

Revel in L'air de Paris at Cafe Degas

Toast the day at Cafe Degas , a romantic French bistro. When painter Edgar Degas (mentioned in the Degas House section above) spent time as a young man in New Orleans, he lived close to the restaurant’s current location. Allison Alsup, Alsup, a local writer who moved to New Orleans 23 years ago because of the city's Francophone culture, described the cafe as having an “indoor-outdoor feel” and recommended prefacing your cafe visit with the nearby New Orleans Museum of Art for a truly Paris-esque experience.

Taste Wines and French Cheeses at St. James Cheese Company

If you're eager to experience all the flavors France can offer, head to St. James Cheese Company and order their French Collection. Or, if you're on the go, order the cheese for pickup and enjoy it in the comfort of your hotel room. If you're coming from the French Film Festival, one of the company's locations is just across the street.

Enjoy Famous French Pastries at La Boulangerie

Chris Granger

For an experience "very evocative of a French bakery," check out La Boulangerie . If you're visiting for lunch, try the Croque Monsieur, the fanciest-sounding ham and cheese sandwich on this side of the Mississippi (no surprise—it's French). For lighter fare, try one of the cafe's many croissant flavors. Unless you're staying for a while, it's unlikely you'll even make a dent in the bakery's pastry and bread options.

Treat Yourself to Cajun at Cochon

Cochon is a must for some of the city's best Cajun. Cajun food , or cuisine cadienne in French, traces its roots back to rural France. Cochon's menu includes many meat and vegetable dishes inspired by the peasant-style recipes and culinary traditions originally brought to North America by Acadians, including a pork neck cutlet with pickled greens and Louisiana cochon (pig) with braised green beans and pickled pears.

Observe Francophonie at the French Film Festival

Kewon Hunter

2024 marks the 27th New Orleans French Film Festival , held in-person February 22-28 and virtually from February 22-March 3. L’Union Frances, one of the major sponsors of the event, hosts a coffee and croissants event in association with the festival, during which attendees can enjoy live French-inspired cajun music. Though the films use French language audio, all are offered with English subtitles.

Experience a Joan of Arc Parade

Amy Kirk Duvoisin, who founded the Joan of Arc parade, describes it as a less overwhelming version of Mardi Gras . The parade, which has been described as a “Walking Renaissance Festival,” has evolved into a celebration of Francophone culture in New Orleans, a “magnet for the French community.”

Celebratory exclamations in French abound in the streets, where performers dressed as angels, flowers, and French explorers march (on foot or on horse). “You get a very authentic French experience, but then you also get this artistry of a New Orleans street parade and the irreverence of Mardi Gras,” says Kirk Duvoisin. According to Kirk Duvoisin, the most French component of the parade happens early on, when the Consul General of France in New Orleans toasts the parade in French, followed by a toast from the New Orleans Mayor in English.

Visitors can also tour New Orleans' Joan of Arc statue, lovingly referred to as "Joanie on the Pony" by locals. The statue was commissioned by French Emperor Napoleon III (not Bonaparte) in 1875 and continues to serve as a reminder of the city's connections to France.

Commemorate Bastille Day

If you find yourself in New Orleans in the dead of summer, Alsup says you can’t miss the festivities of Bastille Day, the anniversary of a prison break representing the beginning of the French Revolution. In past years, performers have celebrated rebellious French women through dance, DJ-ed in French style, and immersed visitors with jazz music.
