5 Best Things To Do In Sinaia, Romania

sinaia tours

Sinaia is a lovely little town in Romania, located just south of Brașov and east of the Bucegi Mountains. You might have never heard about it, but you’ve surely seen pictures of its most famous sight: Peleş Castle. (No? Search #pelescastle 😉 )

Visiting Sinaia and exploring the surrounding mountains was one of our favorite things to do in Romania. It’s not a place where you’d spend more than a few days, but those will be unforgettable and deserve a place on your Romania road trip itinerary.

Sinaia is a picturesque mountain village and offers even more if you extend your visit to the nearby Bucegi Mountains. This post is all about the best places to visit in Sinaia, along with lots of useful tips to make your trip smoother.

Best place to stay in Sinaia:

  • luxury : Ioana Hotel (excellent location)
  • mid-range : Hotel Carpathia
  • budget : Forest Apartments

So what exactly will charm you so much here? Let’s see what to do in Sinaia:

Best things to do in Sinaia

Take a tour in peleş & pelişor castles.

Peleş Castle itself is enough reason to visit Sinaia. It’s among the best European castles we’ve ever seen , and we say this after our visit to the Loire Valley or the fabulous castles of Moravia and Bohemia . If there’s only one castle you visit in Romania, let it be this one (no, not the famous “Dracula Castle”) – and its little sister, Pelişor Castle.

What makes Peleş Castle so special?

Surrounded by the Bucegi Mountains, this Neo-Renaissance castle was built for King Carol I of Romania who fell in love with the scenery on his first visit to the region, and chose it as his summer home. No wonder, just take a look:

Peleş Castle, Sinaia, Romania

I’d build a castle for myself here, too – how about you? And it also amazed us as we stepped inside. It’s not just richly decorated but has an unusually warm vibe, thanks to the lavishly furnished rooms and the countless wood carvings. The owner’s love for the castle can be felt in the carefully decorated halls and rooms. They host fine collections of carvings, statues, paintings, furniture, armor, stained glass, ivory, china, tapestries and rugs – which are among the most valuable art collections in Eastern Europe.

Our favorites were the Royal Library, the Music Room with its unique furniture, and the majestic Imperial Suite designed in the Austrian Baroque style. With more than 160 rooms (and about 30 bathrooms) Peleş Castle is certainly not small, but it’s also one of the most modern castles in the world. It’s the world’s first castle fully powered by electricity.

Arrive early for the Peleş Castle guided tour

Peleş Castle, Sinaia, Romania

You can only visit the interior on a guided tour , and you need to keep the rules to protect it (no food or drinks, photography inside the castle is allowed only without flash and after paying the appropriate fee). You can buy your ticket directly from the castle online in advance ( here ), so make sure to do it if you visit during the busy summer months. Peleş Castle is popular! Tickets are valid for 30 days from the date of purchase.

We bought tickets for the so-called “optional tour” which includes both the ground and the first floor. We wanted to see as much as we could, and it was so worth it! The rooms are amazing on both floors, and the optional part of the tour was significantly less crowded.

Peleş Castle, Transylvania, Romania

You can skip the line on a private guided tour. This one has great ratings , several visitors highlighted how knowledgeable, well-prepared and friendly their guide was. But take care of parking yourself – either you pay a fee on the castle grounds, or book an accommodation with parking in Sinaia, and walk up to the castle.

Check the opening hours carefully before your visit, because they vary by day and the season. The castle is closed on Monday all year, and also on Tuesday in the off season (from October to April). On regular days in the summer season it’s open from 9:15 am to 5 pm (last entry for the main exhibition is at 4:15 pm), but on Wednesday it opens at 10:00 am.

Visit the castle garden and Pelişor Castle

Pelişor Castle, Romania

The terraces and the castle garden are nice additions, and they’re free to visit. You can spend half an hour walking around the fountains and statues, on the stairways, terraces and marble paths. One of the paths leads to Pelişor Castle.

It’s right next to Peleş, they are part of the same complex. Art Nouveau style Pelişor Castle is smaller though, having only about 70 rooms. Don’t make the mistake that we did and not visit it! Why didn’t we? Because we didn’t buy our tickets at the same time we did for the Peleş Castle tour, and the line got ridiculously long later in the day.

Pelişor Castle hosts fine collections of furniture and glassware, and after our interior tour in Peleş, we were sure we’d love it. Too late, and we regret it – next time.

Visit the courtyards of Sinaia Monastery

Sinaia Monastery, Sinaia, Romania

What to visit in Sinaia? The Monastery is a wonderful, barely known attractions.

What to see in Sinaia if you don’t have much time? Nothing can compete with Peleş Castle in Sinaia, yet this lovely town is worth your time once you’re already there to visit the castle. The rest of your day will still be delightful – and much less crowded. So once you’re done with your castle tour(s), and convinced that you took enough pictures of the castle, walk to the next attraction: Sinaia Monastery.

The town was actually named after Sinaia Monastery, which got its name after the Biblical Mount Sinai. Inhabited by Christian Orthodox monks, mainly the courtyards of the monastery and the two churches can be visited for a small fee (~5 lei).

In the centre of both courtyards there is a small Byzantine style church – the Old Church and the Great Church. They’re quiet, beautiful and feel ancient. The interior paintings and mosaics are captivating with their vibrant colors, and many of them tell stories from the Bible.

Sinaia Monastery, Romania

Don’t miss the small museum which is the first religious museum in Romania. It’s home to the first Bible translated in Romanian and a collection of icons.

The monastery grounds are open for visit from Monday to Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm.

Take a look at the Sinaia Casino building

Sinaia Casino, Sinaia, Romania

Continue your Sinaia sightseeing tour with the casino. A short walk from the monastery there’s a lovely park called Dimitrie Ghica , with nice buildings and a fountain. One of those buildings is the Sinaia Casino, located in the center of a small square, with a fountain and flowers in front of it.

It was also built by King Carol I of Romania, and was one of the main Sinaia tourist attractions with around 800 daily visitors at that time. Then it was closed during the Second World War, and taken over by the communists later. Today it’s a well-equipped, modern international conference center, and it also hosts banquets honouring presidents.

You can go inside on a guided tour to see some of the historical and modern exhibition spaces. Check the tour times on their website . These days it’s one of the lesser-known things to see in Sinaia.

Pamper yourself with a luxurious stay at Hotel Palace

Hotel Palace, Sinaia, Romania

Or just take a look at it while walking in Dimitrie Ghica park, as it’s pretty from the outside, too. Hotel Palace is a 4-star hotel, built in 1911. It offers about 150 elegant studios and apartments and a spa center.

Hike in the Bucegi Mountains

The Sinaia hiking can be found in the Bucegi Mountains. Peaks of the Bucegi Mountains tower above the town, offering a romantic background to its castles and elegant buildings. And if you’re into hiking, it means endless opportunities.

Ride the Sinaia Gondola

You can start your hiking day in Sinaia, because it has its own cable car, the highest altitude cable car in Romania. Sinaia Gondola is in the Furnica neighborhood, but you can reach it from the center even on foot if you’re up for a longer stroll. Otherwise the Sinaia cable car has a paid parking lot.

The gondola has two sections and ascends more than 2000 metres. If you’re up for some real hiking, you can take one of the trails that start at the top of the gondola. Be prepared for long lines though and try to arrive as early as possible.

Bucegi Mountains, Romania

Bucegi Mountains from Bușteni

There’s another cable car in Bușteni , about 10 minutes drive from Sinaia. But instead of standing in the long line, we decided to do a short and easy hike to Urlătoarea waterfall from the cable car station.

Cascada Urlătoarea (or Howling Waterfall in English) is about 15 metres tall, and can be reached on a forest trail in about an hour . After several days of torrential rain, the trail was extremely muddy, and the waterfall is not the most breathtaking you’ll get to see, but it’s nice – and a great back up plan for hiking on a stormy day. If you continue your way up along the creek after the waterfall, you’ll find several smaller cascades, and you can make it a loop trail if you follow that path (local tip).

Urlătoarea waterfall, Romania

On a clear day, you can use the cable car to get to the Bucegi plateau, then continue on the trails from there – to Babele, Heroes Cross (Cross Caraiman), Omu Peak or Ialomitei Cave.

Where to stay in Sinaia, Romania

While you can visit Sinaia on a day trip from Brasov or Bucharest , we recommend you spend a night in this picturesque mountain town. You know, to keep things slower, not because that’s the cool thing to do these days, but because it allows you to truly feel the atmosphere of this place and to enjoy the peaceful early morning and late afternoon hours. Whether you prefer luxurious hotels or family owned guest houses and apartments, Sinaia offers plenty of choices in both categories.

Ioana Hotel is a 5-star boutique-style hotel at an excellent location. It offers fabulous mountain scenery, the cable car is only 300 meters away from the hotel, you can reach Peles and Pelisor Castles on foot (within 30 minutes). The center of Sinaia is reachable by bus or a 40 minute walk.

If you’re looking for a more affordable hotel, Hotel Carpathia could be a greta choice. It has spacious family rooms, and indoor swimming pool, hot tub and sauna for guests, and private parking. Delicious breakfast is also included, and you’re a few minutes drive away from all the attractions.

For those who prefer self-catering accommodation, Forest Apartments is a convenient option. The studios come with fully equipped kitchen, offer free parking and free wifi. Guest ratings are exceptional.

Bușteni, Romania

If you’d also hike in the Bucegi Mountains, then definitely book a few nights in Sinaia or Bușteni .

How to get to Sinaia from Bucharest?

While we don’t recommend squeezing it all in a day trip from Bucharest, we understand that you might not have enough time and still want to see Sinaia and Peleş Castle. It’s doable as Sinaia is only about 2 hours drive from Bucharest. But beware, traffic can get horrible in the high season , the small road leading into the town of Sinaia was not planned for the amount of tourists heading there on their summer road trip.

You can opt for the train, too. Choose a Rapid or InterCity train, so that you can be there within 1.5 hours. If you don’t want to worry about either driving, public transport or standing in line for tickets, sign up for an organized day trip from Bucharest. They usually include tours in Peleş and Bran Castles, and also sightseeing in Brasov – like this one . It’s a bit busy for one day, but the ratings are excellent, and visitors especially highlight the knowledge and attitude of the tour guide. It’s as much as you can get out of a single day.

I was a little unsure of what to expect. My tour ended up change a little bit, to a private tour, 2 days and 1 night. Florin my guide met me on time outside my flat. He was very professional but also friendly. He spoke English very well. I felt safe with his guidance and his driving. Day 1 - tour of the salt mines. It was a very good experience. I've never been to one before and I was amazed. Second stop was the Castle Pele. Again, I was amazed. There are no words to describe how beautiful and impressive the state of this Castle. Stayed the night in Brasov. The accommodations were very nice. I was very comfortable and slept very well. Day 2 - we went to Libearty - a brown bear sanctuary. They were so cute and I was very pleased with the organization trying to help rehabilitate the brown bears. Second stop on this day was the Castle Bran or Dracula's Castle. It was impressive, but also very touristy. I enjoyed myself, but many people got in the way of my pictures. Romania is a beautiful county. I really suggesting taking a tour similar to this and I recommend Florin to be your guide.

There are plenty of amazing things to do in Sinaia, Romania. If you didn’t know much about this beautiful town before, you will now! Let’s find out what to do in Sinaia!

Sinaia is a small town in central Romania hidden in the beautiful Carpathian Mountains. It’s definitely worth adding to your Romania trip and it’s easy to get to from Bucharest or Brasov.

The main reason Sinaia may be on your radar is because of the famous Peleș Castle . Originally this was the reason that we chose to visit the hilly Romanian town. However, when we arrived, we discovered so many more things to do in Sinaia!

Although Peleș Castle is one of the best places to visit in Sinaia, the town is also home to incredible hikes within the Bucegi Mountain range (in the Carpathian Mountains) and it becomes a ski paradise in the winter!

With all the things to do in Sinaia, we recommend spending at least one night in the town. However, it’s also possible to visit on a day trip from Brasov or Bucharest.

Exploring Sinaia

11 Best Things to do in Sinaia

We’re going to show you some of the best things to do in Sinaia and these activities can be spread out over 1 to 4 days (and even more if you have time)! We’ve also included a Sinaia itinerary at the end of this list if you want to plan your trip with times.

1 – Visit the famous Peleș Castle in Sinaia

One of the most popular things to do in Sinaia is to visit the beautiful Peleș Castle. The fairy-tale castle is surrounded by Sinaia’s hills and mountains in a lovely garden. It was built for the Royal family (the first King of Romania, Carol I) and is now open for guided tours.

Sadly we visited on a Tuesday when it was closed, so we never saw the inside of the castle, but we were blown away by the exterior! Peleș Castle in Sinaia is closed on Tuesdays all year round and Mondays in the winter months.

It’s only 50 lei per person to do a guided tour inside the castle and you can book your tickets online in advance. If you’re visiting Sinaia on a day trip, it may be easier to book a tour – find out more here !

The castle is a 20 to 30-minute walk from Sinaia Tran Station , but up a gradual hill. There’s also a small bus to take you to the top!

Tip – If you’d prefer a quieter visit, try to arrive early in the morning or after 3 pm.

We take these photos of ourselves using our Joby GorillaPod – perfect for capturing a photo when no one is around!

2 – Walk around the Peleș Gardens

We wanted to give Peleș Gardens its own spot on this list of things to do in Sinaia. there are lovely views of Peleș Castle all over these gardens. This spot is our favourite – Peles Castle Viewpoint .

It’s free to visit the gardens and there’s even a cafe near the castle where you can find Romanian food, desserts and snacks.

One of the best things to do in Sinaia is to walk around the Peleș Gardens

3 – Admire Pelisor Castle in Sinaia

Just down the road from Peleș Castle is Pelisor Castle, another heritage site to see in Sinaia. It was originally built for the King’s nephew and is now open to the public.

Pelisor Castle is closed on the same days as Peles Castle – so avoid Mondays if you want to have a look inside! Find your tickets here !

The castle is surrounded by trees and greenery and compared to the famous Peles Castle, Pelisor looks plainer and less like a palace, but still quite impressive.

We still think it’s worth a visit whilst you’re there, however, we didn’t get to go inside.

The impressive Pelisor Castle

4 – Visit Sinaia’s Museums

If the weather isn’t looking too good for your Sinaia itinerary, maybe visit one of Sinaia’s interesting museums. Honestly, the castles feel like museums, but here are some other options if you’re looking for things to do in Sinaia.

  • George Enescu Memorial Museum – A museum dedicated to a Romanian composer
  • Sinaia Museum of Art (Arta Sârmei) – Sinaia’s Art Gallery

5 – Discover Sinaia Monastery

Another must-visit on your Sinaia itinerary is the Monastery. It was once a royal family residence in the 17th century and is still a working Monastery . The architecture of the building is beautiful and it really stands out against Sinaia’s beautiful scenery.

There are also ancient frescoes and a library within the Monastery grounds. It’s worth spending at least 20 minutes here, although you can spend much longer. It’s also free to visit !

Sinaia Monastery is halfway up the hill from the train station and Peles Castle – here’s the exact location !

There’s also free drinking water outside, so bring your reusable water bottle to save plastic on your Sinaia trip!

Here's the best things to do in Sinaia - Sinaia Monastery

6 – Take a stroll in Dimitrie Ghica Park

Dimitrie Ghica Park is located in Sinaia town near the train station. It’s perfect to visit after a day of exploring the best things to do in Sinaia and there are plenty of benches to relax.

When we walked through the park, it was full of locals and the atmosphere was beautiful. Lots of people were buying Romanian street food from a nearby vendor or drinking an evening coffee.

8 – See the views on a Gondola in Sinaia

Sinaia is perched on the side of the Bucegi Mountains in Prahova Valley. If you’re not into hiking but want to experience the beautiful peaks, then hop on a gondola that takes you right to the top.

It’s also the highest cable car in Romania , with an altitude of 2050.

The cable car station starts in the town centre ( Telecabina Sinaia ) and takes you straight to the top or halfway. We recommend going all the way and look down at Sinaia from above.

This activity in Sinaia does come at a price of 60 lei , although at certain times of day, it can be 35 lei.  Find more info here ! It’s definitely worth a visit if you have more than 1 day in Sinaia, and if you’re on a budget, we suggest hiking!

Note: In the summer, Sinaia Gondola is known to have long queues, sometimes up to 1 hour. Get there early to avoid crowds!

Half way up the Gondola point

7 – Hike in the Bucegi Mountains

Bucegi National Park is a natural wonder with incredible views, hidden falls and protected wildlife. It’s a popular hiking spot in Romania and is right on Sinaia’s doorstep.

From small afternoon hikes to 3-day adventures, the mountains have something for everyone, as long as love nature! Bears are also in the area, so be aware on long hiking trips.

The best way to find small hikes is to get the cable car up to the top and pick a trail! There are also some beautiful rock formations to find in the Bucegi Mountains (such as the Babele and Sphinx ).

We would love to visit Sinaia again in the future, so we can recommend some routes to take!

Admiring the views of Sinaia is one of the best things to do in Sinaia!

9 – Find Sinaia Casino

The impressive building at the back of Dimitrie Ghica Park is Sinaia Casino.

It was a casino up until the 1940s when the country became Communist and it is now used for events or conferences.

The interior is still beautiful and you can imagine what it was like to be a working casino! There are often guided tours that take place here and they regularly update their Facebook page with events.

10 – Wander around Sinaia Town

It’s impossible to not visit Sinaia Town during your itinerary and it’s the best place to come for dinner at the end of your day.

We recommend eating authentic Romanian food at Snow Restaurant ! It’s just tucked around the corner from the main street.

You can also find many shops, souvenirs and grocery stores here. We grabbed a few essentials for our packed lunch the next day!

11 – Hit the slope and go Skiing in Sinaia

Lastly on our list of things to do in Sinaia is a seasonal option! If you’re visiting between mid-December and early April then you may be able to join the locals with skiing or snowboarding!

The Carpathian Mountains are home to the best ski resorts in Romania and Sinaia Ski resort is one of them! It’s a winter wonderland with mostly intermediate trails, although there are some for beginners and advanced too!

Day passes for skiing start at 170 RON (£30) which is very affordable, especially compared to France or the Alps.

We recommend spending at least 1 day in Sinaia to explore the beauty that the small town has to offer. If you are short on time, a tour or day trip is the best way to see areas of the country outside of Bucharest.

Greetings, Internet Stranger! So you want to find the best things to do in Sinaia Romania? Well, first you might be asking yourself what Sinaia is! Before my trip to Romania, I had never heard of Sinaia, so I’m assuming you haven’t heard of it either. It is an extremely popular town for hiking and skiing, so it is chock full o’ tourists in the summer and winter.

24 Hours: Things to Do in Sinaia

Where to stay.

Sinaia is not a huge town, so there aren’t a million hotel choices for your 24 hours in Sinaia. Your main choice will be if you want to stay in the mountains or at the base of the mountains. I suggest staying at Hotel Marami , which is in the mountains.

I promise it’s the right choice because of the stunning views.

It is very affordable, and it’s also close to Peles Castle, which is definitely one of the best things to do in Sinaia. But keep in mind that it’s a bit of a walk uphill from the train station. And in the summer it’s quite hot, so you might sweat like a Romanian piglet. I know that I did. However, if I can manage to lug my wheelie bag up there, I think you can too, Internet Stranger! I’m a weak and pathetic person.

Morning: Peles Castle

Aside from the hiking, this castle is the must-do out of all the best things to do in Sinaia. Peles Castle was the summer residence of Romanian King Carol I, which surprises me because he was known for being a tough guy and having a Steel Crown, and this cupcake of a castle looks more like it would have been the brainchild of a Mad King Ludwig .

Yet let it never be said that a man can’t enjoy a pink cupcake as much as a steel crown, and if you find it extremely pleasant to while away a morning staring at the mountains while standing on the terrace of this chateau, I’m sure King Carol felt just the same. You’re very simpatico like that.

I wish I could take you gently by the hand and lead you all around every curlicue and trompe l’oeil detail in this stunning palace, but sadly that’s not possible, even through the magic of the internet. But I can certainly share with you…

Three Fun Facts: Peles Castle

things to do in sinaia

1) What’s the best way to see Peles Castle?

If you want to maximize your time at Peles Castle and in Sinaia in general, the best way to see the castle is to get a skip-the-line guided tour of the building. You’ll learn so much more about the castle’s history this way, and you’ll get a personalized experience that you wouldn’t get if you go with the larger group tours.

Check rates and availability easily by clicking here .

Keep in mind that Peles Castle is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so you can’t book a tour for those dates.

best things to do in sinaia

2) What’s Special About the Peles Castle?

I think the trompe l’oeil details on the castle are the most special feature. Trompe l’oeil means trick the eye in French, so a trompe l’oeil detail is part of a painting that is trying to trick the viewer in some way–like a painted window that looks like a real window.

You can spend the waiting time trying to find as many trompe l’oeil details on the exterior of the castle and in the courtyard as possible. I always wonder if those really ever fooled people. Did courtiers sit around saying things like, “MY GOD! There are two beautiful pigeons just perched on the side of the castle over there….Oh my bad! Just another trompe l’oeil detail.”

3) What’s this about a King Carol?

So the first thing you should know about King Carol is that Carol is just the Romanian version of the name Charles or Karl. King Carol I, who resided in Peles Castle, was actually German and not Romanian at all. I guess that explains why this castle looks like it would appeal to Mad King Ludwig!

The reason a German became king of Romania is kind of a long story. Romania hadn’t been an independent country for very long because it used to be part of the Ottoman Empire. They were having some trouble finding a king because they had expelled their previous leader, Ioan Cuza.

Apparently a bunch of people turned down the job of King of Romania before they settled on King Carol. I don’t personally understand this. If someone offered me the job of Queen of Romania, I’d definitely say yes, even if just to rub it in the faces of the girls who were mean to me in junior high.

24 Hour Tip

Those are all the secrets of Peles Castle that I can share with you for now.

24 Hour Tip: Have Lunch at Hotel Marami

Before we continue on our day of the best things to do in Sinaia, we need to eat! I say that you really must grab lunch here not because it is the best restaurant in Sinaia, but because it is the only decent restaurant I could find near Peles Castle.

They have an outdoor terrace so no matter what you order, it will be accompanied by a scrumptious view of the mountains. During the summer in Sinaia, you’ll be able to eat outside on most days because the weather is so lovely.

I had a chef salad; it was fine although for some reason it had noodles in it. They didn’t taste bad, but I have never seen noodles in a chef’s salad before. But I guess there’s no reason you can’t have noodles in a chef’s salad. After all, the name suggests that the salad should contain whatever the chef feels like putting in it.

If I were a chef, I’d make a chef salad that was just a whole punch of peanut butter and chocolate mixed together because those are my two favorite foods. Then if someone complained that it wasn’t a salad, I would yell, “It’s a chef salad, and I’m the chef!!” Then I would walk away–mic drop!

Afternoon: Explore Sinaia

Sinaia is an adorable town full of quaint buildings, lush trees, and most importantly, bananas views of the majestic Bucegi Mountains. I promise you won’t get bored finding the best of the best things to do in Sinaia. Take the whole afternoon to just wander around and enjoy what the town has to offer. To help you get started, I provide…

Approximately Top 5: Best Things to Do in Sinaia

best things to do in sinaia

1) Visit Sinaia Monastery

Why not start our afternoon of the best things to do in Sinaia with the place the town of Sinaia was named after, Sinaia Monastery ? It is a Romanian Orthodox monastery, and if you visit you’ll be able to see some of the mosaics that Orthodox churches are so famous for.

After you pay the nominal admission fee, spend some time wandering the grounds and examining the monastery’s treasures. They are small and mostly consist of mosaics, but they are lovely nonetheless. Perhaps you will learn, as I was unable to, why they had a mosaic of Scarlett O’Hara in that dress she made out of the curtains.

best things to do in sinaia

Orthodox churches generally require modest attire, even during the hot summer months. That means no tank tops if you are a lady. I learned this lesson the hard way. Be sure to bring a jacket with you so that your shoulders will be covered. Otherwise, you can’t go inside. I didn’t see any shawls available for rent.

best things to do in sinaia

2) Explore the Mountain

After visiting the monastery, you will want to spend some time wandering around the mountainside gently wending your way to its foot. Don’t worry about getting lost! If I didn’t get lost, you won’t either because I have the worst sense of direction in all the land. Just head down and you can’t miss the bottom of the mountain.

3) Take the Train Tour

Once you reach the bottom of the mountain, you will want to explore the town of Sinaia itself. There’s not that much to see, but my favorite attraction was this little train that goes up and down the mountain. You can get on the train outside of Dimitrie Ghica Park.

Our aged driver, who was probably a vampire and definitely didn’t speak any English, took my 8 lei (approximately 2 American dollars) and let me sit in the back of the train. Everyone else on the train was either a family or old people, but I didn’t care. The views were outstanding and that’s all that mattered to me.

best things to do in sinaia

4) Relax in Dimitrie Ghica Park

After a busy day of sightseeing, I recommend a restful activity in the late afternoon, and nothing is more relaxing than sitting and reading in a beautiful park like this one when the weather is pleasant. You can just sit here and relax until it is time for dinner.

I have since learned that the beautiful building pictured above is a casino, which confuses me as an American. Where are the neon signs? Why isn’t it gold plated? Where are Siegfried and Roy? I can only hope that they at least have Cirque du Soleil or David Copperfield performing inside.

If you are feeling peckish, you can get a cheap snack like “placinta cu branza” from one of the vendors at the entrance of the park. Keep in mind that though all of the snacks listed have different names, all Romanian snacks are just carbs filled with some kind of cheese. (Placinta cu branza literally means pie with cheese.)

best things to do in sinaia

5) Go on a cat hunt

Of course, I don’t mean that you should go shoot some poor Romanian cats, you monster. I just mean to keep a weather eye out for any adorable kitties on the loose. I generally believe that cats are witches in disguise so I’m always trying to spot a witch-cat in the wild.

Indeed, I found one in Ireland already, and now I think I found another hiding near the mountain foot in Sinaia. This is Romania, though, so it might be a vampire cat instead. I try to keep an open mind.

best things to do in sinaia

Evening: Dinner at Snow

Snow is a cute little fake Swiss chalet restaurant on the main drag of Sinaia. Just walk away from the park towards town and you can’t miss it. The restaurant looks like it was taken from the set of Heidi and the waitresses all wear Swiss Miss outfits.

I get that the decor is like this because Sinaia is a famous skiing town, but it seems a little out of place in the summer weather. Maybe during the warm months, the restaurant could change its name to Sun? Just a suggestion.

I recommend the house specialty, which is a decadent and filling Snow Crepe filled with mushrooms, chicken, and cream. It would be perfect after a day of hitting the slopes. I am not quite sure why it is called a Snow Crepe because there is no snow in it at all.

The Snow Crepe is an unusually hearty choice for a dinner in the hot weather of August, but I figure that if you are going to eat dinner at a fake chalet named Snow, you should have the courtesy to pretend that it’s winter, just like if you’re talking to a man who thinks he’s Napoleon, you should call him Mr. Bonaparte out of politeness.
