Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour

After conquering the TV, CD, DVD, concert tour and legit stage markets, one of the few places left for the "High School Musical" phenomenon to go was on the ice.

After conquering the TV, CD, DVD, concert tour and legit stage markets, one of the few places left for the “High School Musical” phenomenon to go was on the ice . That skater-blade version has taken off with a vengeance, with three separate companies of “Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour” packing arenas around North America since the fall and a further 100 engagements booked between now and May, many of them extending to Mexico and Europe.

It’s a clever move on the part of Feld Entertainment, which has been marketing the Disney on Ice brand for dozens of years now. In recent seasons, there’s been a certain apathy in many of the big markets as a younger generation resisted watching anonymous performers skating around in giant papier-mache masks representing characters from the latest animated Disney effort.

But with “High School Musical,” a whole new world of young performers are allowed to appear as they are, which creates a strong and instant bond with the crowds of kids who fill the audiences.

As for the work itself, director Jeff Calhoun, who oversaw the stage musical version, has combined both “HSM” telepics — screened 18 months apart on the Disney Channel — into one show. This makes the ice show a fast-paced entertainment, with little time for anyone to catch their breath. But it also makes an already-thin book even thinner, with a lot of the subplots and adult characters that provided some grit or interest melting away.

We’re left with the basics: Basketball jock Troy falls in love with science brain Gabriella and they find true happiness working on the high school musical — despite the machinations of evil drama queen Sharpay and her even queenier brother, Ryan. The second half largely recycles the plot of the first, moving from high school to summer resort, but it all starts to get a bit familiar.

What carries the show along to victory in the eyes of the young audiences is the cheerful pop score (written by over a dozen composers) and the eager-to-please energy of the cast. Yes, they all lip-synch to recorded tracks (except for Kelsi, the composer of the eponymous musical, who narrates the action), but they perform with zest and succeed in landing some impressive skating moves while doing so.

The major dynamo is Jordan Brauninger as Troy. Besides being impressively handsome, the 20 year-old Brauninger has had a lifetime career in skating, rising to the level of 2004 World Junior Bronze medal winner. As the basketball star, he’s given appropriately athletic leaps that draw gasps from the audience and translate his character in figure skating terms.

Less fortunate is his counterpart, the sweet Nina Greschner, as Gabriella. How do you skate excitingly during a Science Fair? If there’s a way, the creatives haven’t found it yet. However, Sandy Rucker has lots of sass and verve as the witchy Sharpay, which comes in handy especially during the second act.

Trimmed down to a CliffsNotes version of the plot, “Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour” may be a bit bewildering to anyone who has never encountered the material in any of its precious incarnations. But for the fans, it’s one more chance to cheer the songs, story and characters they love. It should be filling arenas everywhere for sometime to come.

“Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour” comes to the Comcast Arena

"Disney's High School Musical: The Ice Tour" comes to the Comcast Arena in Everett Nov. 6-9 and Seattle's KeyArena Nov. 13-16.

The house will be rocking with Wildcat fever when the kids from East High hit the ice at Comcast Arena this weekend in “Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour.” The touring version of the Disney hit films will have seven shows there Thursday through Sunday, then move on to KeyArena for a seven-show stand Nov. 13-16.

“Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour” brings all the songs and dance moves you loved on screen to its ice debut. Your favorite characters are brought to life with a team of world-class skaters who re-create popular Wildcat events from both “High School Musical” and “High School Musical 2,” with the familiar characters of Troy, Gabriella, Ryan, Sharpay, Chad and Taylor played by energetic, professional skaters encouraging the audience to hop out of their seats and sing along.

The first act opens with the New Year’s Eve party scene from the first “HSM,” when the brainy Gabriella meets basketball star Troy. When they go against the “status quo” and audition for the high-school musical, East High turns upside down.

“HSM2” skates in for Act 2, during every student’s favorite time of year: summer vacation. A talent show is the ultimate showdown between rival groups, friends and siblings.

Troy Meets Gabriella, This Time on Skates

By Lawrence Van Gelder

  • Nov. 12, 2007

It’s girls’ night out at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum from now through Sunday. And at the Izod Center (formerly the Continental Airlines Arena) in the New Jersey Meadowlands from Nov. 20 through 25.

Make that little girls’ night out.

The Disney Channel’s hit television movie “High School Musical,” which begat “High School Musical 2,” begetting a couple of hit soundtracks, a stage spinoff and plans for a film, has now begat “High School Musical — The Ice Tour.”

Combining both movies, “High School Musical” on ice leaves the tweens, its primary audience, shaken and stirred, bobbing in their seats, singing along with the music, reveling in the teenage romance and enjoying the spectacle as only the young can enjoy a more-than-twice-told tale.

Something akin to a class reunion this may be, because the youngsters in the stands know so well the characters, the setting and the action in this extravaganza. But “Romeo and Juliet” it’s not.

Though one can mock all of it, from simple conflict to sunny conclusion, “High School Musical” in whatever form remains entertaining. The skating in the “Ice Tour” version may not be of Olympic caliber, and the choreography only occasionally, as in a second-act baseball number, achieves imaginative heights. Still, the cast is appealing, the costumes are colorful, the music is catchy, the action is swift, and the outcome is satisfying. Yes, the show carries lessons about peer pressure and self-fulfillment and friendship and romance. But it is still mainly cheerful fluff.

Adults unfamiliar with “High School Musical” who find themselves chaperoning children into this alien world need not fear. A pop quiz (with answers) projected onto a screen at the end of the rink, as it was when this show played at Madison Square Garden at the end of September, will provide a splendid tutorial.

Within minutes everything becomes clear. In “High School Musical,” the hotshot athlete Troy Bolton and the brainy new arrival, Gabriella Montez, find themselves auditioning for the winter musical at East High in Albuquerque. This venture into showbiz not only disrupts the plans of the perennial stars, Sharpay Evans and her brother, Ryan, but it also shakes Troy’s teammates on the East High Wildcats basketball squad and Gabriella’s sister members of the scholastic decathlon squad.

Never fear.

In the second act, derived from “High School Musical 2,” the whole gang is working at the country club owned by the parents of Sharpay and Ryan. Baseball and golf replace basketball. The scheming Sharpay schemes again. There’s another show. And although Gabriella and Troy drift apart ...

Let’s not spoil the finish.

"High School Musical — The Ice Tour" continues through Sunday at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, N.Y.; (516) 794-9303.

Disney's High School Musical: The Ice Tour Reviews

Chicago Tribune - Recommended

"...'HSM' translates well to the rink -- the plethora of ballads allows for lots of romantic pairs skating and the basketball and other set pieces serve arena-style action. Granted, "HSM2" (the second act) takes place at a summer resort. But hit that rink with a green wash and it's a golf course."

Disney's High School Musical: The Ice Tour

"High School Musical" has been a smash hit in virtually every area of the entertainment spectrum from television and home entertainment to soundtracks, and live concert tours. Disney's High School Musical: The Ice Tour is the first and only live, touring production to feature all the songs, dances, and team-spirited fun of both the original Emmy® Award-winning Disney Channel movie and its blockbuster sequel, "High School Musical 2."

Disney's High School Musical: The Ice Tour stars a cast of world-class skaters portraying the roles of East High's own, Troy, Gabriella, Ryan, Sharpay, Chad and Taylor. Incredible performances are set to the chart-topping tunes and signature choreography made popular by the "High School Musical" films. With ice as its dance floor, the production brings a whole new and exciting dimension to the pop culture phenomenon.

Produced by Feld Entertainment and Kenny Ortega, in cooperation with Disney Theatrical Productions, the ice tour boasts an award-winning creative team, including some of the key talent from the original "High School Musical" films and concert tour.

"High School Musical," an Emmy Award-winning Disney Channel Original Movie, premiered in January 2006 in the U.S. and through its first year, on 25 Disney Channels and free-to-air broadcasters, reaching more than 100 countries and 100 million unique viewers worldwide. The premiere of "High School Musical 2" in August 2007 drew an audience of 17.2 million, more than doubling the viewership of the original movie premiere and making it the most-watched basic cable program ever.

The "High School Musical" soundtrack was the #1 album of the year in 2006 (certified quadruple Platinum by the RIAA), and broke records on the Billboard charts with an unprecedented nine original songs making the "Hot 100." It was also the #1 TV movie on DVD for the year and spawned a #1 New York Times bestseller, "High School Musical - The Novel." A subsequent concert tour and stage version have both been wildly successful, and the movie has inspired real-life high school musical productions numbering in the thousands.

The first theatrical release film in the series, "High School Musical 3," is scheduled to begin shooting early in 2008.

ADA Requirements for Theaters

  • August 12, 2016 August 8, 2021

ADA requirements refer to requirements set in place by the  Americans With Disabilities Act . In other words, it means making sure you have taken every step possible to create reasonable options for those who have disabilities. If you own a venue that plays host to theater, music, spoken word, or even comedy, it is going to be your responsibility to make sure you are compliant with everything the ADA might demand of you.

While this does mean suitable wheelchair ramps, and other accommodations for those with noticeable physical  disabilities , keeping up with ADA requirements can also mean considering groups you may not have thought about. For example, you may have a wheelchair ramp, but do you have accommodations for the deaf? For the blind? Are these things you need to worry about?

ADA Basics for Theaters

Do you produce or operate a venue or venues that offers films, music, or any kind of performing arts? If so, then you need to take ADA requirements seriously. It doesn’t get much simpler than that, but there are several things within that larger thought that you will want to keep in mind.

For example, solely in terms of ticketing, there are several elements to consider. You will need to offer accessible seats at your venue, which refers to a space that is specifically designed for a wheelchair, discusses  DUI Lawyers in Stockton CA . Tickets for these accessible seats will need to follow all of the guidelines and conditions that apply to all other types of seating. Prices for these seats cannot be higher than prices for other seats/spaces. Furthermore, you will need to provide the same type of information for this seating that you would provide for anything else. There are also considerations for purchasing multiple seats, selling tickets to groups, and the practice of holding and releasing tickets for accessible seats.

Fraud prevention, ticket transferring, and the secondary ticket market are further elements to ticketing that you may need to address.

You may also need to train your staff in all of these matters. As you can imagine, the degree to which you will need to consider all of these things is going to be determined by the size of your venue, the number of individuals who normally come to your venue, and the number of employees under your management.

  ADA Considerations for Theater Managers

As a theater manager, you are going to have to consider a number of ADA factors.

When there are problems regarding the ADA compliancy of a venue, it generally doesn’t fall to the owner of the venue to deal with the problem. The company that manufactured the equipment that allows you to meet ADA requirements will not be there to address any potential problems. In a great many cases, it is going to be the responsibility of the theater manager to handle things.

It is worth remembering that generally speaking, problems with ADA requirements are not specifically the fault of the theater manager. Even so, common sense, proper training, strong employee support, and an eye for anticipating potential problems can help you avoid a number of headaches. Having a procedure in place to address problems in a proactive fashion is also a good idea.

ADA compliance will cover several different aspects of your venue. Make sure you are consistently meeting the compliancy demands for your entrance, your parking lot, your box office, your concession counter, your water fountains, your path of travel, and more. You will also need to address demands and ongoing challenges with your restrooms, assistive listening system, and your exits.

Finally, remember that different types of buildings will have different considerations,  some older structures are not subjected to the ADA .

Are You in Danger of an ADA Lawsuit?

You may have accessibility and seating taken care of for disabled patrons, but are you taking care of everything? A growing number of lawsuits, from  Santa Cruz Auto Accident Attorneys , that are currently hitting the theater world revolve around the subject of closed captioning for hearing-impaired theater attendees. Theaters by law must provide their customers with auxiliary hearing aids and other measures. However, some argue that making such demands of theater/venue owners is in fact a violation of first amendment rights.

Ultimately, it is your call to make with hearing aids and other measures. Consider erring on the side of caution, where it concerns matters of ADA compliance, and make sure to consult with counsel to determine if you structure is subject to the ADA, and what can be done to ensure compliance.

How to Find a Career in Theater

  • July 25, 2016 August 8, 2021

If you want to work in theater, but you don’t really like the idea of becoming an actor, what kind of options are available to you? As you are going to discover with a little research, there are actually tons of possibilities awaiting those who wish to work in the theater.

To be sure, the educational requirements will vary from one theater job to the next. Other elements can also serve to play a role in how successful you are at connecting to the theater career that appeals to you. Even so, if you are eager to find a particular job in the world of theater, you won’t be disappointed.

Career Options in The Theater

Becoming a Theater Arts major can prove to be a fantastic foundation for your future career goals in the theater. A Theater Arts major can go on to a number of careers in theater. At the same time, having this degree can connect you to jobs in business, as an educator, in government, as a performer, or even in the world of publishing.

397083

A Bachelor of Arts degree is one option. On the other hand, you may find that a Bachelor of Fine Arts is a better fit for what you would ultimately like to achieve. With the B.A., a student can focus on things like performing, history and/or literature, or even design and technology. For those who wish to explore things like actor training programs, you may want to put your focus towards a  Bachelors of Fine Arts  (B.F.A.) instead.

Talent agents, producers, singers, playwrights, editors, consultants, directors, and dialog coaches are just a few of the jobs you can achieve as a Theater Arts major. Furthermore, this is a major that is going to leave you with a number of skills and talents. You will have strong skills related to both presenting and performing. You will be able to manage projects, project strong skill sets as a leader, apply critical thinking abilities to a multitude of complex tasks, and so much more. As we mentioned before, you are going to wind up with a powerful foundation for your future. As a Theater Arts major, depending on what you ultimately want to do, the possibilities are more often than not going to impress you.

Which Theater Career Is Right for You?

Will a Theater Arts major be the right step for you? Answering this question is actually a lot simpler than you might think. You are going to want to consider the talents you have at this moment. You will then want to consider the theater career that strikes you as ideal. You will then learn about the demands of that particular job, comparing these demands to the talents you have. If you see a correlation between these things, then you are ready to move to the next step.

You will now want to do as much research as possible on the theater career that appeals to you. This research is going to include the job market, the requirements for a degree, and the schools that are currently available to you. These are some of the most important things that you are going to want to keep in mind. n regards to a criminal record, especially when it comes to driving under the influence  offense , this will not preclude a career in the theater. It is not a requirement for a successful career as a thespian to have a clean criminal record.

As you are going to discover, most of the theater jobs that you are going to come into contact with are going to come down to two things: You are going to want to have strong communication skills, and you are going to want to have strong organizational skills. If you can bring both of these things to the table, then you are almost certainly on your way.

Begin Your Ideal Theater Career Today

Do you want to be a fight coordinator? A fencing master? A critic? A hairdresser? A lighting person? A puppeteer? A set designer? A technician? These are just a few more of the theater jobs that are currently available to you. Don’t be afraid to go after your dreams, but consider having a backup theater career path, just in case.

You should also keep in mind that one career sometimes requires experience with a different career. In other words, some people found that to get to their ideal theater job, they needed to first spend time with a different job in the theater. The possibilities are endless in showbiz.
