The "2012" edition of Tiger Woods PGA Tour is the first in the long-running golf series to feature a virtual re-creation of the famous Augusta National Golf Club, and allow players to compete for the coveted green jacket. The game's new "Tiger at the Masters" mode re-creates each of Woods' four Masters wins, and challenges players to match (or beat!) his scores. Another 23 virtual versions of real-life courses come standard in the game, as well, including St. Andrews, The Royal Melbourne, and Pebble Beach.

Through each hole in the tournament, a computer-controlled caddie is available to offer situational advice on strategy, shot selection, and green-reading. The game incorporates many of the series' other signature features, including a career mode in which players can develop a custom character and lead him onto the PGA tour. In other modes, gamers can golf as or against more than 20 professional stars of the sport. PGA Tour 12 also offers a revamped broadcast-style presentation, with commentary from Jim Nantz and David Feherty.

It launches as a digital download on Tuesday, 6th September.

It works with PC game Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, with simultaneous group play. There's live chat on the course, too.

You have to be a member of Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, though, to make use of these features. Luckily, included in the download is a three-month membership to Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online. Sorted.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 launched on console in March. It introduced the Masters – a first for the series.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 features a new "Caddie Experience," and for the first time ever, The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club.

On January 4th, 2011, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 was announced by EA Sports . The game is subtitled "The Masters" and is the first in franchise history that includes both Augusta National Golf Club and its Par 3 Course, as well as a playable version of The Masters tournament. According to EA, a new type of "laser scanning technology" was used to scan Augusta providing "the most authentic digital representation" of the course.

This is the earliest in the year that a game in the Tiger Woods franchise has been released. Traditionally the series released games in August, with the previous two installments being released in June. The March release date was chosen to coincide with The Masters, which took place April 7-10, 2011. This is also the first game in the franchise that does not prominently feature Tiger Woods on the cover artwork, although he is front and center on the box of the Collectors Edition.

• The standard versions for Xbox 360 & PS3 contain a total of 16 courses.
• A PS3-exclusive Collectors Edition adds an additional five courses, for a total of 21 in that package.
• The Wii version of the game features a slightly different set of courses, for a total of 25 in all.
• The PC version was released later in the year on September 6th, but was criticized for its limited graphics & online modes, and for essentially being a boxed version of the browser-based free-to-play Tiger Woods Online . EA even issued refunds to unhappy customers because of this.
• The iOS version of the game does not include The Masters courses (and subsequently doesn't have "The Masters" subtitle.)

New Features

• "The Caddie Experience," which provides the player with a fully voice-acted caddie who gives advice on your swing, helps you read greens, choose your shot and club selection, and more. This optional feature can be toggled on or off at any time.
• Although the franchise first used the PlayStation Move motion controller in Tiger Woods 11 , in an effort to improve upon the Move controls for this year's game, the developers have stated that "the swing mechanic for the Move has been completely rebuilt."
• Jim Nantz from CBS Sports provides commentary for the first time in the series and David Feherty returns to the franchise to join him.

A Trojan horse for EAs subscription golf game, this is an insulting and sickening grab at PC gamers wallets.

The game loads up and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters informs me that I can now purchase Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters. Is this Inception-like advertising an evil way of getting confused customers to buy infinite copies, or just endemic of the laziness behind EA's latest golf-sim update?

It's a bit of both. This is an offline version of EA's Tiger Woods Online game, built using the browserfriendly Unity engine, which enables players to compete in the Masters tournament and exhibition matches without the fear of slicing it in front of people. But it still hooks into the subscription based-Tiger Woods Online, and I don't think I've ever played a clumsier attempt to integrate offline and online.

I was contentedly chipping my way to a par in a Master's game (the golf is still decent, if unchanged since TGO launched in 2010) when I was warned I had ten minutes to save or lose my progress. I ignored it, assuming it was a general message to the entire server, as I was playing offline. The same pop-up appeared at five and two minutes before stopping the game and kicking me back to the desktop. When I tried to return to my offline game it wouldn't allow me access.

When Tour 12 did grudgingly allow reconnection, I poked around online and discovered something sickening: this game doesn't even have a dedicated online mode. It has a three month's membership to Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, after which you'll have to pay either £3 a month or £25 per year. That's on top of the £30 this glorified demo costs in the first place.

Yet without that membership you'll feel hard done by. Even if it is ugly, easy to play, and attempting to drain your wallet every second, at least there are a good number of online competitions to triple-click your way through. Are they worth the subscription cost? Don't be silly: this is golf. Actually, this is old golf: an old game, repackaged without a good going-over by the greenskeepers. Ratty, tattered, and begging for money from the first time it loads up. They're selling you half a round and charging you more when you get to the ninth.

There might be a good model for a subscription-based golf game out there, but even when this was free-to- play the cost was too high. Now that it's saddled with a pricetag, the bare minimum of polish and one new course, I'm not even sure just telling you to avoid it is enough. As it stands, EA are already giving refunds to people who feel ripped off by what they bought.

The publishers hoped to use the connectivity of the PC to fill their pockets, but in the end it was that connectivity that brought forums and websites together to demand they do better. I can only get behind those dissatisfied customers.

Don't let EA get away with this. Don't buy it, and tell them this isn't good enough.

PC and Mac users will be able to finally walk and play the hallowed grounds of Augusta National Golf Club and have an authentic Masters experience at home or on the go. 

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 12: The Masters for PC/Mac will have a host of gameplay features including Road to the Masters, where you’ll begin your career on the amateur tour and work your way to the PGA Tour. You’ll also get to play through memorable moments in Masters history, including Tiger Woods’ four wins there as you try to equal or beat his scores in each round of the Tournament.

The game features 14 championship courses with the Augusta National Golf Club, Pebble Beach, St. Andrews Links and TPC at Sawgrass counted among them. You’ll be able to upload your own image and create your golfer using Photo Game Face technology as you swing your way through course after course.

As for the game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters is the first entry in the series to include the famed Augusta National golf course, home of the revered Masters tournament. The game lets players relive memorable shots from the Masters' storied history, including Woods' four Green Jacket wins at the tournament.

Tiger Woods in line to play in 26th Masters; eyeing cut record

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Barring a setback in the next four days, it seems likely that five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods will make his 26th appearance at Augusta National Golf Club this week.

Woods, 48, flew from Stuart, Florida to Augusta on Sunday and spent some time at the club's practice area with his caddie, Lance Bennett. Woods and Bennett worked together at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles in February.

It will be the first time Woods and Bennett have worked together at Augusta National. Woods' former caddie, Joe LaCava, who helped him win his fifth green jacket in 2019, is now working as Patrick Cantlay's full-time caddie.

This week, Woods will attempt to set a Masters record by making the cut for the 24th consecutive time. Last year, he made the 36-hole cut and tied Gary Player and Fred Couples but was forced to withdraw before the rain-delayed third round resumed after aggravating plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

In his last start, Woods was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational during the second round because of illness. The 15-time major champion later confirmed that he was battling the flu. Woods also dealt with lower back tightness during that tournament.

Notah Begay III , Woods' former teammate at Stanford and a golf analyst for NBC Sports, said on a conference call last week that Woods was suffering from lower back problems.

"He's trying to formulate a strategy and approach that he can work within given the constraints that he's presented with -- and he's got some constraints," Begay said "He's got zero mobility in that left ankle and really has low-back challenges now, which he knew he was going to have."

Woods' appearance at the Genesis Invitational, which benefits his foundation, was his only appearance on the PGA Tour this season. Because of his inactivity, the former world No. 1 golfer is currently ranked 950th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Woods had surgery on April 19, 2023 to address post-traumatic arthritis in his right ankle that was caused by injuries suffered in a February 2021 car wreck.

Woods played in a one-day pro-member tournament at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida, in early March. He reportedly played with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, in the Bahamas before Woods and other PGA Tour policy board player directors met with PIF officials about a potential investment.

Since returning to professional golf after the car wreck, Woods has withdrawn or missed the cut in four of his six starts. His two finishes were a tie for 45th in the 2023 Genesis Invitational and a solo 47th in the 2022 Masters.

"For the past couple months, he's been trying to find a way to recover," Begay said. "He can play the golf. We always knew the question was going to be 'Can he walk the 72 [holes]?' That's still up in the air. But can he recover from one round to the next? That's the biggest question that I really don't know, and he's not going to know either until he gets out there and figures out whether the way he's prepared for this year's Masters is going to work for him."

Woods' last top-20 finish on the PGA Tour was a tie for ninth at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open. He finished outside the top 20 in 14 consecutive tour starts, his longest drought as a professional, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

On Friday, Augusta National released the pre-tournament interview schedule for next week’s Masters Tournament. Tiger Woods is listed among those scheduled to speak, giving the clearest indication yet that Woods plans to play in this year’s Masters.

Woods’ health and ability to walk the multiple miles in a round of golf can change rapidly, but the signs are pointing to another Masters appearance. Flight-tracking sites on social media showed Woods’ jet flying to Augusta’s airport last week for a presumed pre-tournament practice session. Now Woods is scheduled to speak to the media Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET. Woods has not spoken publicly since The Genesis Invitational.

Woods last completed an official PGA TOUR event at the 2023 Genesis Invitational. Though he made the cut in last year’s Masters to tie the tournament record for consecutive cuts made, he had to withdraw before the tournament’s conclusion because of plantar fasciitis. He had a subtalar fusion shortly after, sidelining him until the Hero World Challenge in December.

It’s a stacked lineup of the game’s best, but Woods is the highlight, as he often is at Augusta.

Few things are more synonymous than Woods and Augusta National, and the Masters has had a way of framing every era of Woods’ dominant career. His runaway 12-shot victory in 1997 cemented Woods’ arrival as a generational star. His win in 2001 marked his second consecutive at Augusta National. It capped the “Tiger Slam,” as Woods held all four major championship titles concurrently, one of the most impressive achievements in modern sports history. Woods won the Masters again in 2005, which started a streak of seven straight top-six finishes at the event. He won 31 times on the PGA TOUR in those seven years. Woods’ remarkable victory at the 2019 Masters was a late-career revelation that embodied the superstar’s ethos, once again achieving the unthinkable after numerous injuries cast doubt on whether Woods could climb to the top of the mountain again.

He’s in a similar place as the calendar flips to Masters week. Woods pulled out of The Genesis Invitational after his tee shot on the seventh hole of his second round. Woods has said walking is not the issue and his surgically repaired right ankle is pain-free . That hasn’t left his whole body without pain, though. It’s just moved to different places.

“Other parts of my body have to take the brunt of it,” Woods said at Riviera. “Just like my back is fused so other parts of my body have taken the brunt of that. I have two different body parts that are now fused. Yeah, other parts of the body have to adapt.''

Woods will be adapting to his new reality at Augusta National. He has not accumulated the competitive reps he craves as he turns his attention toward the Masters. However, Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig reported that Woods was at Augusta National for a scouting trip and played the course with Chairman Fred Ridley and Justin Thomas last week.

If there were a place Woods might not need competitive reps, it would be Augusta. Woods has made the cut in 24 of 25 starts, with 14 top 10s.

The golf world will watch Woods’ return closely, hoping the 15-time major champion can rekindle magic at Augusta National again.

Spring doesn't officially start until there are rumors of Tiger Woods showing up at Augusta. Those rumors began on March 29 and were later confirmed by Sports Illustrated's Bob Harig, who reported that Woods played a round on the course in advance of the Masters.

Woods, as he has done in the past, is likely testing his body to see if he is healthy enough to compete in the tournament. Official word on if he will be participating is expected in the days leading up to the tournament.  

The 48-year-old competed in his first event of the year in February at the Genesis Invitational but withdrew in the second round due to the flu-like symptoms. Woods was 2-over in the tournament through his first six holes of the second round.

In March, Woods elected not to play in The Players Championship, which is unofficially considered golf’s fifth major. Woods has not played in the event since 2019.

Woods said recently that he had been optimistic he could play once a month through the majors in 2024.

Woods played in the 2023 Masters but, for the first time, did not finish the tournament.

He withdrew before the resumption of the rain-delayed third round after reaggravating his plantar fasciitis . Woods, at the time, was 9-over and in last place among those that made the cut. 

Woods, who has never missed the cut at the Masters as a pro, competed in the 2022 Masters and finished tied for 47th. It was his first official PGA Tour event since suffering serious leg injuries in the February 2021 car crash.

He completed the tournament, but he shot 6-over 78 on both Saturday and Sunday to finish at 13-over for the worst score of his professional career at the Masters.
