Voyager Q Conveniently Docks Your Extra SATA Drives

newertech voyager q power supply

_____________________

Basically, this is a powered dock that accepts 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives. It can be used with SATA revision 1,2 or 3 drives, that is, 1.5, 3, or 6 GBps. There's a spring loaded cover plate with an aperture that cleverly holds either sized drive nicely in place. There are several models from NewerTech, and if all you need is USB 2/3, the Voyager S3 sells for under US$40. The one I'm reviewing here, the Q, has the following connections.

  • USB 3 (backwards compatible to USB 2.0)
  • FireWire 800
  • FireWire 400

The Voyager Q provides the SATA connector inside, power to the drive, and bridge circuits to provide for the external interfaces. Only one of the external interfaces can be active at a time. If you connect more than one, the fastest interface will be auto-selected.

newertech voyager q power supply

The procedure is to make sure the unit is connected to power and the Mac with the selected interface, make sure the power is off (there's a blue LED power light), insert the SATA drive, then press the power button. The drive spins up and mounts just as if it had been inside a PC or a Mac tower.

There's an issue at this point that needs clarification. The Voyager product page currently says, "Accessing multiple drives couldn't be simpler as Voyager's unique design makes hot-swapping drives a breeze." This wording, in NewerTech's language, means the host (say, a Mac) doesn't need to be rebooted when properly swapping out SATA drives. But by using the term "hot-swapping," an inexperienced user may wrongly conclude that SATA drives can be safely dropped in and pulled out (hot-swapped) at will when the Voyager is powered up. Not so.

In fact, the User Guide makes a strong point about having the power off when inserting or removing a SATA drive and then only applying power when it's seated. You should follow the User Guide's advice. Also, the User Guide should add a section 2.3, "Drive Disconnection" that emphasizes the sequence of 1) dismounting the drive in the OS, 2) turning off the Voyager's power, then 3) pressing the mechanical eject button.

In fact, for those who may forget the sequence, a simple decal on the front that says, "Power must be off before inserting or removing drive," would be a terrific idea.

Also, if the Voyager is part of a FireWire 800 daisy chain, NewerTech recommends it be the only or the last device in the chain in order to avoid disrupting the connection to other drives in the chain when the power is killed.

Given all that, in the process of testing the Voyager Q, I repeatedly disconnected and reconnected a SATA drive using the proper steps. It has my iTunes library on it, and I was constantly interrupting, then relaunching music playback and there was never a hiccup or failure to operate as expected.

Next: Example Uses and Design

Example Uses

There are several notable scenarios for a device like this. First, suppose you are moving away from an older PC or Mac tower (Mac Pro) and towards home RAID 5 system. But you need to be able access the SATA drive(s) that were inside either temporarily or for archival purposes.

Another case might be a RAID 1 system with two mirrored drives and one fails. You're unable to find an exact match in block size to rebuild the RAID 1 pair, so you elect to pull the data off the remaining good drive pending a new storage scheme.

Finally, say you want to be able to economically add vast storage to a desktop Mac without the added expense of a fancy enclosure. One could do that, but it's probably a bad idea, however, because the back of the SATA drive is very much exposed.

I can attest that I've personally experienced the first two scenarios above, and a device like this is a lifesaver.

I was especially impressed with the design, workmanship and features of the Voyager Q. The case is black plastic, but it's rugged and clean in the design. A spring loaded slotted flap on the top keeps either a 2.5- or 3.5-inch drive well in place. The power button has a two-color LED status light. (Blue indicates power, red indicates disk access.) It weighs 20 ounces (570 grams), and that's enough heft so that, when empty, cables don't tug it out of place. The bottom has rubber pads so it'll stay put and not scratch a desk. However, the connectors on the back are rather close together and oddly aligned.

There's an eject button on the front to assist with the eject of the SATA drive. The power brick has a spiffy connector that allows you to plug in into a power strip directly or plug in a longer cable that has a conventional power plug for either tight spaces or an extension of the power cord or both. (However, that extension cable is not included, but is available for US$2.99 )

Most of us here at TMO , me included, don't think it looks as good as the previous "toaster" design.

newertech voyager q power supply

One of the things I like about NewerTech products like this is that all corresponding cables are included. While most customers will only use one initially, there could likely come a time when the unit needs to use a different interface on a different computer. The needed cable is right there in the box. That avoids a scenario of having to rifle through an old box of cables, wondering if the one found will work, or else mail order and wait a few days. My hat's off to NewerTech for doing this, and I hope the company never changes this wonderful policy.

Next: Packaging, User Guide, Compatibility and Summary

Packaging and User Guide

Half of the box ships with the Voyager Q in a plastic bag, but the other half of the box has an inner box full of good looking, quality cables, also in plastic bags.

newertech voyager q power supply

A good User Guide is desirable and is delivered.

Included is a seven page pamphlet that shows the package contents, how to get started, and troubleshooting tips. There is a boatload of information on how to contact NewerTech for customer support, and it goes without saying that NewerTech and its sister sales group, Other World Computing , are renown for their excellent customer support, of which I can also attest.

There is a one year limited warranty with a 48-hour turn-around time.

Compatibility

"Macintosh OS 8.6 to 9.2.2, OS X 10.2.x or later including OS X Mavericks 10.9.x, and an available FireWire, USB, or eSATA port. Time Machine Compatible (Mac OS X 10.5 and later). Support for drives over 2 TB requires Mac OS X 10.2 and later."

Windows and Linux are also supported. See the the product page > Specs > Compatibility .

First, I am impressed by the design, engineering and quality of the Voyager Q. All the connectivity cables are included, and it's compatible with a wide range of operating systems and connectivity technologies. A good paper User Guide is included. There is an awesome amount of technical information provided on the product page in the blue tabs: Features, Includes, Gallery Specs, Reviews and Ratings.

On the other hand, there are some minor implementation issues. It's a common occurence for a new power adapter brick not to fit in a loaded power strip, and the extra power cord that helps solves that problem should also be included. The ports are close together and not nicely lined up. The "hot-swapping" language by NewerTech is confusing, and one should be aware of proper operation.  All in all, however, the Voyager is a very good product.

Product: Voyager Q

Company: NewerTech

List Price: US$67.74

Very good design, engineering and quality. All needed connectivity cables are included. Two color LED status indicator plus eject button. Compatible with a wide range of operating systems and connectivity technologies. A good paper User Guide is included. Extensive technical information posted for prospective purchaser.

Power adapter extender cable not included. Connectors are closely spaced and not aligned. Doesn't look as good as previous models. User needs to be mindful of correct sequence of operation

NewerTech builds our hardware to the highest standards of reliability and performance. Because 100% reliability is always the goal, we rigorously quality test and back our hardware with a 2 Year NewerTech Limited Warranty and award-winning customer support.

  • Use of eSATA interface requires system reboot in order to recognize drive. For FireWire 800 users, OWC recommends that the Voyager be the only device connected or the last device in the chain when hot-swapping drives. If you have other devices behind the Voyager, not all devices will remount after a drive is swapped. When that occurs, a power-cycle is needed for that device. For eSATA users, a system reboot is required in order to recognize drive.

Voyager Q review: Voyager Q

newertech voyager q power supply

Available from online retailers for less than $100, the Voyager Q makes a great addition to your desktop if you frequently work with various internal hard drives. The device supports both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA hard drives and is compatible with all the existing external storage connections. It's also simple to use, and in our testing, produced an impressive performance. Unfortunately, the Voyager Q doesn't support the older ATA (IDE) standard, which means that if you purchased your computer more than seven years ago, the Voyager Q will not be compatible. If this is the case, we recommend the WiebeTech UltraDock V4 , which offers legacy support.

newertech voyager q power supply

The Bottom Line

Design and features The Voyager Q looks very much like a toaster, especially because of its top-loading slot, into which you load an internal hard drive. The slot, which can handle both the 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, has an opening with a spring-loaded latch that automatically secures the hard drive, regardless of its thickness.

On its front is a blue on/off button that doubles as its activity indicator and flashes red when the device is at work. Directly on top of the button is a release latch that ejects the hard drive when pressed.

On the back of the device is an array of connection ports, supporting USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, and eSATA connections. The Voyager ships with cables for each of these connections.

The only complaint we had with the Voyager Q's design is its power adapter, which, compared with the size of the Voyager, looks bulky.

With the Voyager Q connected to our test machine, we linked several hard drives without any problems. There was no software driver to install, and every hard drive we tried could be "hot-plugged," meaning we could remove or insert it while the computer was running.

Performance We tested the Voyager Q with a 500GB high-speed Seagate hard drive, via all of its connections, and saw impressive scores. The device was consistently faster than most external hard drives we've reviewed.

The eSATA connection, for example, gave us 426.32Mbps for the read test and 340.32Mbps for the write test. For comparison the Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme , one of our fastest eSATA external hard drives, ran at 439.52Mbps for the write test and 336.82Mbps for the read test. These scores are about the same as those you get from internal hard drives. This means you could potentially install the operating system on the external hard drive without compromising its performance.

The Voyager also did very well with the other connections, except for the FireWire 800, which wasn't faster than the FireWire 400. However, we blame this on Windows XP, which we used for our test operation system, rather than on the Voyager because Windows XP has been known to not support the FireWire 800 connection very well. We suspect that performance on a Mac OS would be better.

Thanks to its fanless design, the Voyager Q also performed quietly and stayed cool during the testing process.

Service and support We don't think you'll need much support for the Voyager Q, but NewerTech backs the device with a one-year warranty. Beyond that its support is rather scant. Its Web site offers just a PDF version of the manual and a Web form to e-mail its technical support. The tech-support phone number is also listed on the site; however, it's very hard to find and it's unclear about what hours it is available. If you want customer support, NewerTech will direct you to Other World Computing , which is a retailer that sells the product.

Voyager S3 – A Review

Voyager S3 External HD Dock Company: Other World Computing Price: $37.99

S3 loaded

NewerTech offers a variety of hard drive docking solutions for those of us who prefer to use bare hard drives for external storage.  These docks also come in handy for those who need access to a hard drive they pulled out of a Mac or Windows machine.

MyMac’s David Cohen reviewed the NewerTech Voyager Q Hard Drive dock back in September of 2009.

While the functionality for the NewerTech Voyager S3 is basically the same as the Q Hard Drive dock there are interface and hardware differences in the S3 model. These docking solutions only work with Serial ATA (SATA) drives up to 4.0 TB.

First, let’s discuss what these docking units are actually used for.

David describes these docking units as “Looking like a small digital toaster” and I agree that is exactly what they look like. The inserted drives do stick out of the top, so unlike a toaster the drive does not disappear inside of them.

If you’ve been using computers for a while and you’ve ever upgraded or replaced a hard drive in either a desktop or laptop system there is always the inevitable question of what to do with the drive you pulled out of your computer. If the drive was upgraded you could use the old drive for external storage by either buying an external enclosure, or if you have many of these drives like I do, you buy one of these NewerTech Docking solutions.

The cost of empty external enclosures can add up over time and then there is the problem of where do you keep them. I know because before the advent of these docking solutions my desk was scattered with hard drive enclosures.  Also, I have been able to resurrect “damaged” drives by reformatting them in a Voyager Dock, which is something you can’t do if you only have a single drive slot inside your computer.

S dock mail

The S3 unit itself:

The S3 differs from the Q dock in some significant features. While the Q docks have multiple interfaces (USB 3, eSATA, FW 800, FW 400) the S3 docks have a single USB 3 interface which is backward compatible with USB 2. The Voyager S3 is also $40 cheaper than the Q model. Inside the S3 box you will find the docking unit, a power cable, and a USB 3/USB 2 cable.

S dock back

On the back of the unit you will find the on/off button, the jack for the power cord, and the USB 2/3 plug. Looking at the unit from the front there is a hard drive eject button and an activity LED that glows blue when the unit is powered up and flashes red as  any inserted drive is being written to.

S dock mail

Using the S3:

Looking down into the S3 there is a hinged flap that folds down when you push a 3.5” SATA drive into the slot. You have to make sure you line up the SATA connector on the hard drive with the connector inside the S3. This is rather easy and the drive smoothly connects when pressed down. If you mount a 2.5” drive the hinged flap stays in place as there is a slot in the flap that allows 2.5” drives to simply be pressed into the same S3 internal connector that is used for the larger drive.

Once that is accomplished you push your drive into the slot and press the power switch to turn the unit on. If you have a formatted drive, the drive icon appears on your Mac desktop just like external drives, DVDs, CDs, or your own internal drive. There are no drivers required, nothing to install. If the drive is not formatted your Mac will recognize this and ask you if you’d like to format the drive. Using the S3 is that easy.

Other observations:

In my house there can be up to four laptop Macs and my Mac Pro at any one time. Two of those laptops are on college campuses but when they come home to visit I back them up to external bare SATA hard drives using the S3. I use Super Duper!  to back up computers in my house and I have this utility set up to make incremental back ups and then boot from the back up. I do this to make sure I actually CAN boot up from the back up because this is the situation back ups are created for: so you can boot off of them if your main hard drive should fail, and it will fail. See my reference (Whoops!) below.

When I use my NewerTech Q dock for these back ups, the bare drive inserted into the unit boots right up after Super Duper! finishes running my back up. However, when using the S3 on a  new 2012 MacBook Pro running the latest version of Mountain Lion (OS 10.8.x) I find the drive will not boot up after Super Duper! finishes creating the clone drive. This may have something to do with the USB 3 connection or some bug in the Super Duper! program. I can not confirm which is causing  the automatic re-boot to fail. The drive does boot up after I tell Super Duper! to re-boot, it just doesn’t do it automatically. I have contacted Dave Nanian at Shirt Pocket about this problem and I will be adding Super Duper! comments later as we explore whether the issue is being caused by Super Duper! or the S3.

Other than this minor glitch the S3 performs as well as the Q docks and at a cheaper price.

If you do own bare hard drives and you don’t have a place to store them, I highly recommend the NewerTech “StoraDrive” storage cases I reviewed back in January of last year. Review Link .

In closing I highly recommend that you own either an S3 or a Q dock if you are the type of person who has bare hard drives laying around your desk. They are also invaluable if you have to boot up from something other than your Mac’s internal hard drive. During a recent hard drive failure, that I had the displeasure of having to work through, ( See Whoops! ), I had a successful conclusion because I had a Q drive to fall back on.

MyMac Review Rating is 9 out of 10

Russia’s Rostov-4 Connected To Grid

2 Feb (NucNet): The Rostov-4 nuclear unit near Volgodonsk in southern Russia was connected to the national grid and produced electricity for the first time on 1 February 2018, state nuclear corporation Rosatom said in a statement.

A ceremony, attended by Russian president Vladimir Putin and Rosatom’s director-general Alexey Likhachev, saw the formal start of the process of bringing the reactor unit to full design capacity, the statement said. Construction of Rostov-4, a 1,011-MW VVER-1000/320 unit, began in June 2010. First criticality was reached on 29 December 2017. There are three other units of the same design in commercial operation at Rostov. Rosatom said the startup of Rostov-4 is expected to improve the security of energy supply in Russia’s southern regions. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Russia has 35 nuclear units in commercial operation and seven, including Rostov-4, under construction. In 2016 nuclear energy’s share of electricity production was 17.14%. Mr Putin said in a statement on 1 February 2018 that nuclear’s share of production had increased to 19% in 2017 and that Russia is exporting nuclear plants to 12 countries.

Turboatom to supply turbines for Rostov 3

!{Model.Description}

Ukraine’s largest turbine manufacturer, Turboatom, says it will finalise a deal to supply steam turbines to Russian reactor Rostov 3 in July 2010.

Under the terms of the contract, the equipment is to be delivered to customer Rosatom by May 2011, prior to plant commissioning in November 2011. Construction of Rostov 3 originally started in 1977 but was suspended in 1990. It restarted in September 2009 and the VVER-1000 reactor is due to being operation in 2013.

Turboatom won the Rostov 3 contract after competing in an international tender along with Russian and European design firms. For the first time, Turboatom will supply a 1000MW capacity-turbine complete with titanium alloy condenser tubes. Previously it has only worked with copper-nickel alloys and non-corrosive steels.

Director general of OJSC Turboatom Victor Subbotin said that the contract “opens further opportunities in Russian power market”.

Turboatom will take part in tenders for upgrades to Balakovo NPP, Kalinin NPP and other Russian plants, he said.

The company has manufactured 169 turbines nuclear power plants, which it says equates to 13% of the total market share. Turboatom turbines are currently in use at Loviisa in Finland, Paks in Hungary and Kozloduy in Bulgaria.
