His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen Consort to visit York Minster – Wednesday 9 November

7 Nov, 2022

Scroll to explore

His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen Consort, will visit York Minster on Wednesday 9 November for the unveiling and blessing of the cathedral’s new statue of Her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

The King and The Queen Consort’s arrival will be heralded by the York Minster bells. They will be welcomed by the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, the Acting Dean of York, Canon Michael Smith and members of the Chapter of York.  Children from the cathedral’s Minster Mice weekly service will present posies to The King and The Queen Consort.

After a short service of prayer, The King and The Queen Consort will meet people from the Minster Community, the city of York and the wider region doing outstanding work in their communities and making a difference to the lives of local people.

At a new exhibition, The King will meet York Minster stonemason Richard Bossons, the designer and carver of the statue of the late Queen, and his assistant Rita Dawe. The exhibition documents the creation of the statue from concept through to finished work of art. Commissioned by the Chapter of York, the cathedral’s governing body, the statue honours the life of service and dedication of Her Late Majesty the Queen.

The King will then meet children and young people from the Minster Community and talk to staff and volunteers who met the late Queen when she visited the Minster in 2012 to distribute the Royal Maundy.

The Queen Consort will meet representatives from the military and emergency services in the city and region.  Her Majesty will be introduced to two pupils from Husthwaite Church of England Primary School, Husthwaite Village, North Yorkshire.  The children won a competition to design a stone carving to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. Their designs have been transformed into stone pieces carved by the Minster’s stonemasons.

Representatives from local social action groups, refugee organisations and charities working hard to support some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities in York and the region, will meet The Queen Consort.

The King and The Queen Consort will sign the Distinguished Visitors’ Book before leaving the Minster through the Great West Door for the unveiling and blessing of the statue.

Archbishop Stephen said: “The presence of The King and The Queen Consort at York Minster, in the heart of the city of York, for this wonderful and unique occasion is an immensely poignant moment. But this is also a joyful day as we honour the long life and service of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth to her people, her nation and the Commonwealth.”

Lord Mayor of York, Councillor David Carr said:  “That His Majesty King Charles III has chosen to visit this historic city so early in his reign is a great honour for York. We hope that this day, which I am certain will combine great joy at his presence and proud reflection on the great service and legacy of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II,   will be the first of many visits by him to this great city. My thanks and congratulations go to the whole team at York Minster for the work they have done to make this historic occasion possible.”

King Charles and the Queen Consort to come to York for historic visit

king charles visit to york

Wed 2 Nov 2022  @ 10:42am YorkMix News

King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort, will come to York next week and unveil a statue of the late Queen.

The statue, designed and carved by York Minster stone mason Richard Bossons, will be unveiled – following a service – at the West Front of the Minster on Wednesday 9 November .

The King will enter York at Micklegate, the traditional royal entrance into the city, where he will be met by the Lord Mayor, Councillor David Carr, the Lady Mayoress, Lynda Carr, the Sheriff, Sheriff’s Consort, along with the Leader of the Council, Cllr Keith Aspden, Town Clerk and Deputy Town Clerk.

Micklegate Bar was the most important of York’s four main medieval gateways and the focus for grand events. By tradition, reigning monarchs pass through this gate when visiting York, and stop here to ask the Lord Mayor’s permission to enter the city.

Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was given the time-honoured monarch’s welcome to York in 2012, with a proclamation of welcome in a medieval atmosphere conjured up by traditional musicians and musketeers.

Lord Mayor of York, Councillor David Carr said: “To extend the traditional greeting to King Charles III on what we hope will be the first of many visits to York will doubtless be one of the highest honours of my career and my period in the great office of Lord Mayor of York.

“I am thrilled to be able to welcome him on what I am certain will be a day which combines great joy at his visit and reflection on the great service and legacy of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

“My thanks and congratulations go to the whole team at York Minster for the work they have done to make this historic occasion possible”

Leader of City of York Council Cllr Keith Aspden said:“York’s unique connection to the Crown and the Monarch is an important part of our city’s history. We were honoured to welcome Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to York 11 times during her reign.

“The King’s first visit will be another proud moment for York and I know that local residents will share our delight that the King and Queen Consort have chosen to visit our city so early in their reign.

“It is a great honour both that the new King and Queen Consort should choose to visit our historic city, and that York Minster’s tribute to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the focus of this historic occasion.

“We are currently carrying out all necessary work with partners to prepare for this important visit to ensure the occasion is a special and unforgettable moment in York’s history.”

Other relevant information about, for example, road closures and public access, will be made available in the coming days.

Part of Yorkshire tour

The King’s visit to York is part of a wider Yorkshire tour.

Charles will spend two days carrying out official engagements in the county, visiting Bradford and Leeds on 8 November, and then York and Doncaster on 9 November, with Camilla joining him on the second day.

After the unveiling, the Archbishop of York will bless the statue of the Queen.

The late Queen chose the final design of the statue herself and the figure is carved out of Lepine stone.

The unveiling was due to take place in late September but was postponed due to the royal mourning period following the Queen’s death.

During his time in Bradford, the King will visit the head office of supermarket chain Morrisons.

In Leeds, West Yorkshire, the King will be shown a number of The World Reimagined Globes on display as part of a national project to explore the history and impact of the transatlantic slave trade.

He will also meet members of the Jamaican and wider West Indian community, and tour the Jamaica Society Leeds’ Rebellion to Romance exhibition.

After the statue unveiling in York Minster, the royal couple will travel to Doncaster, South Yorkshire, to confer its status as a city.

Eight places won coveted city status as part of celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee.

What to expect as King Charles III visits York

  • Wednesday 9 November 2022 at 8:18am

King Charles arrives in Bradford's Centenary Square

King Charles III will be making his first visit to York to unveil a statue of his mother, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

He and Camilla, Queen Consort, will be making their first visit to the city since he became King in September on the final day of a two-day tour of Yorkshire .

The statue, designed and carved by York Minster's stone mason Richard Bosson, will be revealed following a service at the West Front of the Minster.

The King will enter the city at its traditional royal entrance of Micklegate where, in keeping with tradition, he will stop to ask the Lord Mayor's permission to enter the city.

It will be the first time a monarch has passed through the gate since 2012, when Queen Elizabeth II last visited York.

Lord Mayor of York, Councillor David Carr said, “To extend the traditional greeting to King Charles III on what we hope will be the first of many visits to York will doubtless be one of the highest honours of my career and my period in the great office of Lord Mayor of York.

"I am thrilled to be able to welcome him on what I am certain will be a day which combines great joy at his visit and reflection on the great service and legacy of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

“My thanks and congratulations go to the whole team at York Minster for the work they have done to make this historic occasion possible.”

On arrival at the Minster, The King and Queen Consort will be welcomed to York Minster by the Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell, where they will attend a short ceremony to unveil the statue.

The two metre-high statue forms part of plans to transform part of the Minster's grounds into a new accessible space called Elizabeth Square, named in honour of the late monarch.

After that, they will be travelling onward to Doncaster to confer the city with city status.

SNYDE | Buckingham Palace, U.K. government reviewing ‘unwell’ King Charles’ funeral plans: report

Buckingham Palace and the British government began reviewing hundreds of documents related to King Charles III’s future funeral following the monarch’s cancer diagnosis , according to a report.

Little is known about Charles’ mysterious illness outside of his initial announcement of “a form of cancer” in February , but sources close to the royals told The Daily Beast he “is significantly more unwell than his aides are letting on.”

The palace said several months ago it would not provide a “running commentary” about his health, but the 75-year-old king, who was coronated roughly a year ago , is reportedly undergoing radiotherapy treatment regularly in London.

“Of course he is determined to beat it and they are throwing everything at it,” a source told the outlet. “Everyone is staying optimistic, but he is really very unwell. More than they are letting on.”

A review of plans for “Operation Menai Bridge” — the purported codeword for his death — is being reviewed by the Cabinet Office, the government department that handles for state funerals, with an emphasis on reviewing what went right and wrong in the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022 after 70 years on the throne .

“The plans have been dusted off and are actively being kept up to date,” a former staffer told The Daily Beast. “It’s no more than what you would expect given the king has been diagnosed with cancer. But the circulation of them has certainly focused minds.”

However, a military source told the outlet that planning “began the day after they buried the queen” because the funeral will be have so many intricacies, including the guest list, security threats and time crunch.

Christopher Andersen, a bestselling royal writer, told The Daily Beast that there’s really no way to tell how Charles’ health is faring because of the lack of transparency, which will only lead to more “gossip and speculation … and conspiracy theories.”

News of the review comes several weeks after Kate Middleton revealed her own cancer diagnosis following weeks of fervent speculation about her whereabouts and vague statements from the palace that were widely criticized and derided.

King Charles Is Hoping to Resume Public Royal Duties Next Month

By Katie Nicholl

King Charles Is Hoping to Resume Public Royal Duties Next Month

After a lengthy period of absence, King Charles is planning to resume public duties possibly as soon as next month, sources close to him told Vanity Fair .

Following a cancer diagnosis earlier this year, Charles has been undergoing outpatient treatment at a London clinic, forcing him to pause royal engagements. While he has continued to carry out state duties including Privy Council meetings and weekly audiences with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak , he has not carried out public engagements as he recovers between treatments.

Charles’ last public appearance was on Easter Sunday when he attended church services with Queen Camilla and members of the royal family. The monarch, who was photographed with Camilla leaving church in Scotland on Sunday, has appeared in good health. While Buckingham Palace has not confirmed when the king will return to work, sources close to the monarch say he is recovering well from his treatment and is looking forward to taking part in some key forthcoming engagements.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla attend the Easter Mattins Service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on March 31, 2024 in Windsor, England, UK

With a busy summer calendar, King Charles plans to attend Trooping the Colour on June 15 as well as Royal Ascot the following week. The key events will mark Charles’ official return to work, however, if he is given the green light by his medical team, he may carry out public engagements before then.

“At the moment HRH is doing very well and responding very well to treatment,” says a royal source. “He is very keen to get back to public-facing duties before June if he can. He is doing well but is frustrated more than anything else that he has had to take time off. He is being a good patient but not always a patient one.”

Adds the source: “What he wants is to be back at work meeting the public and doing what he loves. That is the bread and butter of what the royal family does, and the king is very keen to be back out. He is determined to be at Trooping and at Royal Ascot if not every day then for at least one hopefully two days. He is also looking forward to the palace garden parties.”

King Charles is currently in Scotland and will return to England next week. Adds the source: “He has been responding very well to treatment and is very positive about his health. It is wonderful to see him so optimistic.”

While he has lost weight during his treatment, the king has been well enough to carry out desk work and correspondence throughout. Last month, he met Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt ahead of the Spring Budget announcement and he continues to read his daily red boxes of official paperwork. However, when he resumes public engagements, adjustments will be made to his schedule. Charles will have to take on fewer engagements and has been advised to opt for outdoor events where possible so he is not in close contact with members of the public.

Buckingham Palace has said that planning for future engagements continues and is subject to doctors’ advice. According to one aide, decisions about future engagements will be made “nearer the time and making allowance for adaptations as necessary, or not.”

King Charles was spotted driving to church on Sunday, where he likely paid tribute to his late mother Queen Elizabeth II, who would have turned 98 years old on April 21.

His Majesty was seen behind the wheel with his wife, Queen Camilla, next to him as the two arrived and later left Crathie Kirk church near Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

The outing comes as Charles continues to receive treatment for an unknown form of cancer, which was diagnosed in February following a surgery for an enlarged prostate.

Charles was seen last month walking and shaking hands with a crowd outside Windsor Castle on Easter Sunday in what was the British monarch's most significant public outing since he publicly disclosed his diagnosis.

In addition to Charles' appearance, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York ex-wife of Charles' brother Prince Andrew, also issued a statement to Instagram for Elizabeth's birthday.

"Thank you for all that you have taught us, for being a steadfast leader and dear friend. You are sorely missed," Sarah wrote, in part.

Sarah has been undergoing treatment for cancer herself. She first underwent a single mastectomy to treat breast cancer in 2023, and was then diagnosed with malignant melanoma earlier this year.

The royal family has also been rocked by the news that Kate, the Princess of Wales, is also undergoing treatment for cancer.

Kate announced she was undergoing preventative treatment for cancer after months of speculation over her absence from the public following an abdominal surgery.

"As someone who has faced their own battles with cancer in recent months, I am full of admiration for the way she has spoken publicly about her diagnosis and know it will do a tremendous amount of good to raise awareness," Sarah wrote of Kate's public announcment.

“I hope she will now be given the time, space and privacy to heal,” Sarah added.

Australian police arrest 7 alleged teen extremists linked to stabbing of a bishop in a sydney church.

Australian police arrested seven teenagers accused of following a violent extremist ideology in raids across Sydney on Wednesday to protect the community from a potential attack, officials said.

The seven, aged 15 to 17, were part of a network that included a 16-year-old boy accused of the stabbing of a bishop in a Sydney church on April 15, police said.

Five other teenagers were still being questioned late Wednesday by the Joint Counter-Terrorism Team, which includes federal and state police as well as the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, the nation’s main domestic spy agency, and the New South Wales Crime Commission, which specializes in extremists and organized crime.

The seven, aged 15 to 17, were part of a network that included a 16-year-old boy accused of the stabbing of a bishop in a Sydney church on April 15, police said.

More than 400 police officers executed 13 search warrants at properties across southwest Sydney because the suspects were considered an immediate threat, New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson said.

“We will allege that these individuals adhered to a religiously motivated, violent extremist ideology,” Hudson told reporters.

“It was considered that the group … posed an unacceptable risk and threat to the people of New South Wales, and our current purely investigative strategies could not adequately ensure public safety,” Hudson added.

Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett said investigators found no evidence of specific targets or timing of an intended “violent act.”

She said the police operation was not linked to Anzac Day on Thursday, a public holiday when Australians remember their war dead.

Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was attacked while delivering his sermon.

It has been a potential target of extremists in the past.

A 16-year-old was charged on Friday with committing a terrorist act , a crime that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, following the knife attack in which an Assyrian Orthodox bishop and priest were injured.

An Australian Federal Court judge on Wednesday extended an order banning social media platform X from showing videos of the bishop being repeatedly stabbed .

Justice Geoffrey Kennett extended the ban, which the court put in place on Monday, until May 10.

Police investigate at the Assyrian Christ The Good Shepherd Church after a knife attack took place during a service the night before, in Wakeley in Sydney, Australia, April 16, 2024.

X, formerly called Twitter, announced last week it would fight in court Australian orders to take down posts relating to the attack.

Australia’s eSafety Commission, which describes itself as the world’s first government agency dedicated to keeping people safer online, applied to the court for the temporary global ban.

The teen allegedly spoke in Arabic about the Prophet Muhammad being insulted after he stabbed Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and the Rev. Isaac Royel in the Christ the Good Shepherd Church as a service was being streamed online.

Senior Parish Priest Fr. Isaac Royel (L) and Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel during the 2023 Holy Resurrection Feast services, in Sydney, Australia.

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess confirmed that his organization was involved in Wednesday’s operation.

“Australia’s security service is always doing its thing to provide security intelligence that enables the police to deal with these problems when we have immediate threats to life or anything else that’s evolving,” Burgess said.

He said investigations of children had peaked at 50% of ASIO’s “priority counterterrorism case load” a few years ago and the number had since reduced.

But the number of minors under investigation was rising again for reasons including social media content, Burgess said.

“They’re a vulnerable cohort,” Burgess said.

King Charles Gives a Smile as He's Spotted in London amid Cancer Treatment with Queen Camilla

Queen Camilla recently returned to royal work following a break surrounding the Easter holiday and her anniversary with the King

King Charles and Queen Camilla are back in London.

On April 17, the royal couple was photographed in a car leaving Clarence House, their royal residence in London. The Queen, 76, rode in the passenger seat while the King, 75, sat in the back on the same side, both giving a smile and wave at onlookers.

The spotting came just one day after Queen Camilla resumed her royal duties after a few weeks spent largely out of the public eye during a break for the Easter holiday as well as her 19th wedding anniversary with the King on April 9.

Meanwhile, King Charles continues to work mainly behind the scenes since he announced his cancer diagnosis in February. The announcement came weeks after he underwent a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate in January, during which “a separate issue of concern was noted,” the palace said in a statement. (They clarified that the monarch did not have prostate cancer.) King Charles began "a schedule of regular treatments" and postponed most public-facing duties, following medical advice.

At the end of March, King Charles made his first major public appearance since sharing the cancer diagnosis as he and Queen Camilla attended a church service at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on Easter along with other members of the royal family.

The pair spent time in Birkhall , a favorite Scottish hideaway, to mark their wedding anniversary earlier this month. The King and Queen often retreat to the residence, close to the royal family's Balmoral Castle and estate, around this time every year.

While the Queen continues her royal duties, King Charles is reportedly "frustrated" by his current limitations.

Peter Phillips , the King's nephew, told Sky News Australia 's The Royal Report in March, "I think, ultimately, he's hugely frustrated. He's frustrated that he can't get on and do everything that he wants to be able to do."

“But he is very pragmatic, [and] he understands that there's a period of time that he really needs to focus on himself," he continued.

Just before Easter, a royal source told PEOPLE that King Charles is " progressing well " and there is an "amplified confidence" about the sophisticated treatment he's receiving.

"He is positive, the doctors are optimistic," the source said.
